He’s watching the (reattempted) launch in Florida. Several people have suggested in thread that he be on the rocket. I concur.

Lots of noise in the neighborhood last night and into the early morning. I finally got some sleep, woke up at 930 to find out 500 people arrested so far in Los Angeles and more demonstrations going on.

I am not thinking of DT at the moment because I have Julia Child on the TV. The show is called Julia Child Best Bites. It is a re-run but like most shows on PBS are great.

It’s my understanding that Mars needs colonists. He can be launched there and then he can be the very first President of Mars. He’ll have the whole planet, all to himself!

Well…..for a little while, at least. Until his supplies run out. 😁

Every day at work I hear callers who love to use the “N” word like the dam is broke. And I remind those ignorant crackers that we record every call. A lot of them say they are glad that the calls are recorded because they want to be on God’s side—the white side…and they’re to stupid to realize they’re screaming at a Jew…

driftglass goes after David Brooks again: When Beltway Pundits Dream, They Dream of Imaginary Lincoln

When he really settles into the saddle, he doesn’t spare the words, so it is long, but really gets into the meat of it about halfway through or so.

What’s appalling is that Very Serious Beltway Pundits like David Brooks have no love for the actual Lincoln. The guy who is buried two miles from my front door. Instead, they love their imaginary Lincoln just as they love their imaginary Reagan.

… Their imaginary Lincoln is a Lincoln without Shiloh or Cold Harbor. A Lincoln without the Wilderness or Vicksburg or the Shenandoah Valley.

Their Lincoln is two-dimensional caricature of the actual Lincoln. A gentle redeemer and uniter, and not the man who went through just about every general in the Union Army until he found one that would do what needed to be done: crush the Confederacy completely, regardless of the cost. One that would bomb their cities, burn their crops, slaughter their armies and starve their citizens until, at last, their will to make a traitor’s war against the United States was broken and they finally gave up.

There is no place in Mr. Brooks’ gauzy cartoon version of American history for a Lincoln who recognized a mortal threat to the nation coming from a despicable confederacy of its own citizens, and who ruthlessly used every bloody means at his disposal to utterly destroy that threat. No place in his idylls for a Lincoln who offered reunion and reconstruct to the South only after they had been beaten to their knees and forced to accept surrender or face extinction. …

re: #36 BigPapa

Agreed. We need to see how open it is now, how casual it is now, because that’s what’s happening. People are emboldened to sling it out because they feel empowered by it. They feel that between Trump empowering and enabling the entrenched power structures behind this, and the pain and outrage rising up like a geyser from black communities, they feel the need to bludgeon black people like this to ‘show their place’. Ignoring it or hiding it doesn’t change that this is happening, and more gleeful than ever.

Trump stands with DeVos, vetoes measure to overturn her controversial student loan forgiveness rule, WaPo

President Trump on Friday vetoed a bipartisan resolution to overturn a policy that makes it tougher for students who say they were defrauded by colleges to have their federal education loans canceled.
In rejecting the measure Friday, Trump called it “a misguided resolution that would increase costs for American students and undermine their ability to make choices about their education in order to best meet their needs.”
Although the White House had long signaled the move, veterans groups that strongly oppose the regulation had implored Trump to stand with members of the military who they say are routinely preyed upon by unscrupulous schools for their lucrative GI Bill education benefits.
In the lead-up to Memorial Day, veterans groups ran advertisements on Fox News urging Trump to support the congressional resolution. But siding with veterans would have forced Trump to abandon the longest-serving member of his Cabinet: Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

I grew up in area with a substantial Amish community. During college, my younger brother delivered pizzas. He loved delivering to the Amish. They were big tippers. He tells the story of one delivery where an older man was on the front porch smoking a pipe. My brother took the pizza inside, and when he came out, the older gentleman asked if they tipped him enough and handed him a ten spot.

Bullshit argument indeed: a quick google of the Tony Timpa case (from Dallas in 2016) reveals it to be a horrible tragedy - very much like the George Floyd incident - poor dumb schmuck ends up in police hands; dies - while the cops joke around - and they walk, even after indictment, because the DA drops it.
I’m not sure what Walsh’s point is here (outside of racist assholery) - no riots? WTF? It’s cases like Tony Timpa’s that deserve protests: maybe his family/friends/community were just deluded into assuming that “justice” would eventually get done.

I felt like I needed to rewatch the 1965 Baldwin-Buckley debate this morning. I had to hear Baldwin speaking after the events of last night. His speech to the Oxford Union is more powerful now than it was then. I made a LGF page with a link to the debate. If you have never seen it before, I ask that you watch and see Baldwin in all his power denounce injustice while Buckley feebly tries to counter.

Never forget that Buckley defended segregation here in America and especially in South Africa.

Assuming that they are going with a 2-man crew due to it being a simple orbital flight instead of docking with the ISS. Last time we had that was on then final Gemini 12 launch back in 1966 when Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell conducted multiple EVAs as practice runs for Apollo flights.

edit: scratch that part about ISS, apparently they are docking.

Oh man. I remember getting a tennis ball smashed into my eye when I was in high school. I still have permanently distorted vision because of scarring, but I was lucky that the tennis ball is soft and has give, even at high velocity. I have no doubt the kind of damage a harder rubber bullet would have. My condolences to her and screw the fucknut that shot her.

Not Amish, probably not Mennonites either. Neither wear ankle length dresses, the women aren’t wearing “coverings” on their heads and while some Mennonite women don’t, those women would be dressed in ordinary street clothes. Also, Amish or super conservative Mennonite men wouldn’t have buttons on their jackets.

It’s a regular thing in the Soyuz capsules, a stuffed toy or similar is dangled from the overhead and when it starts floating the crew know they’re in free-fall.

Sadly the SpaceX folks don’t seem to carry out the other Soyuz tradition of having the astronauts pee on the rocket transporter on the way to the pad.

CCDev started in 2010, and the contract was signed with SpaceX in 2014. But sure, let’s credit this to the asshole who just happened to be in office when it all came to fruition.

Guess NASA forgot that the last time they did that, the asshole (Nixon) went on to cut the manned spaceflight budget because we’d “beaten” the Soviets to the Moon and thus needed those funds for things like carpet-bombing goat trails in the Far East.

This reminds me of a scene in the documentary Freedom Riders. John Seigenthaler (special assistant to RFK) is featured in the doc as he was the administration’s point man for the Freedom Riders. In the doc, Seigenthaler talks about getting a call from RFK, after the first wave of riders, asking him who the hell was Diane Nash. Nash was an organizer for the second wave of riders. Seigenthaler was tasked with calling her to talk her out of the second wave, telling her people were going to get killed. She responded that she (and the riders) knew and that had all prepared their wills the night before. I use this doc in my teaching so I’ve seen him describe this many times. It brings tears to my eyes every damn time. College students writing their wills.

Walter Mondale had a grudge against NASA over the Apollo 1 disaster. I was convinced he would end the space program if he was elected in 1984. In that time period, the idea that we should “spend the money on Earth instead!” was really prevalent. Stonekettle’s thread is just a faint reflection of those times. Nixon cut the budget of lunar flight, but did at least get the ball rolling in 1972 on funding for the Space Shuttle. However, it wasn’t until Carter came into office to get more than one vehicle into service, when he pushed for Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis in 1979, and of course, the ISS didn’t get funding until 1993 (as the original design for Freedom from the 1980s never got any budgetary commitment).

I believe Carl Sagan’s opposition to the space station was that it was so expensive it would strangle NASA’s operating budget for decades. I can’t say he was wrong. Manned space flight has been tethered to low earth orbit ever since and the ROI on the space station is pretty questionable.

It isn’t about financial benefit, it is opportunity cost. It is a what if question so we can never really know, but if you had just given the money to NASA and let them decide how to spend it I don’t think the ISS is what would have won. The ISS is the child of “Space Station Alpha,” which itself was the child of Skylab and other 60s-era proposals for permanent space labs. And “Alpha” itself was NASA giving the Shuttle something to do, as the long list of compromises made to get that off the ground had turned the “reusable orbital U-haul” into a bloated white elephant that they were struggling to justify by the Carter era when programs like Pioneer, Voyager, and Viking were sending back reams of data for a lot less investment. Honestly, if Carter has been reelected or Mondale had been elected, odds are the SST would have been shit-canned after Columbia.

The Russian’s were flabbergasted by the shuttle. They knew the numbers; they knew it couldn’t work. Hell, they tried to sort of build something that might be closer to working in Buran but dropped it after one unmanned flight. It was just too expensive for civilian launches and they had better military boosters.

Just like us. But we had to keep the shuttle going because of how crippled the development system had become and we kept going till the second was lost and that made it obvious that it had to go.

I’m not sure today’s launch is really any better. We should have been doing far more research on aerospike based engines and SSTO concepts.

I’m not sure today’s launch is really any better. We should have been doing far more research on aerospike based engines and SSTO concepts.

That’s because the SST as it eventually became was totally separated from what NASA had originally envisioned. They were looking at something like what the ESA eventually proposed in their Hermes concept: A small, mostly-reusable project that would launch atop a “cheap” commercial rocket and carry several humans and/or cargo. But between the economic crapping out in the 70s, the post-Apollo malaise, and the allure of “cheap” programs like Viking and Voyager meant manned spaceflight was seen as a waste of funds.

Enter the Air Force, which loved the proposal NASA sold them of the SST as a platform for recon or even covert satellite launches. But that meant turning the small cargo hauler into a “space U-haul,” which meant bigger rockets, more fuel, and a sturdier design. Then the USAF gave up on the whole thing, which left NASA with a white elephant that they had to sell to the Reaganites as one part of a two-part program (the other being “Space Station Alpha”) to show up the Soviet efforts with their Salyut space station program.

Yeah, I should probably say aloud that I did a research project on the SST for my astronomy class in college, and reading the nitty gritty on the early days of the project really killed a lot of the childhood luster I had for the whole thing. Especially when you consider how many other programs and proposals got shit-canned to keep that whole thing going. We could have had men orbiting Venus or on Mars, but instead we got a program that never lived up to its promises and only kept going because “We paid for it, gotta get some use out of it.”

I would’ve spent the afternoon out in the big brown Lincoln, but I cracked the thermostat housing yesterday being an idiot, so I’m waiting for the new one to arrive.

Damn, what’s with you and cooling systems?!

You could just take a pic from any major sportsball post-championship celebration and odds are people could be fooled into thinking its a pic from the riots in recent days.

re: #238 Targetpractice

Meanwhile, I sit here and remember the pics of Lexington after the Wildcats won their last NCAA championship, which included couches set ablaze and a cop car overturned. Or, as the wingnuts defended such, “youthful exuberance.”

I lived about 6 blocks from that neighborhood and cut through it on either my walk or bicycle ride to work each day. Dudebro slum.

And I walked through smoke during the daytime as they were lighting shit on fire on another occasion of “victory.” No cops at that time.

Before I looked closer, I genuinely thought that pic was one of a circuit board. Mein Gott, am I ever glad I gave up on conspiracy theories years ago.

It’s a lot better than me and exhaust systems. I don’t do exhaust systems, and there’s a reason why. Two words: Acetylene. Torch.

The comments in the YouTube of it say it’s Church of God. Still, the Amish were known abolitionists so this would not be unheard of for them.

Hmm. They maybe from Philly and it maybe from the Super Bowl “celebration” but the shots are too closely cropped for me to make out anything recognizable in the background.

The only source I can find for that “montage” is unsourcednews dot com, a satire site that describes itself as

Unsourced News was founded by a trio of mediocre comedy writers from New York whose heads were about to explode from all the nonsense they were reading in the daily news. Call it venting, but UN now boasts a network of over two daily readers and nearly four subscribers.

unsourcednews.com

There are some other pics at news sites of after Super Bowl crap in Philly, but haven’t found a legit source for those pics.

KAGA (Keep America Great Again), which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, has a lot of signage down here in Texas.

This is the front page of the Inky online: inquirer.com

It looks like there are a lot of things going on and I am thankful to be in Northeast Philly.

The march and protest including the burning cars were only a few blocks from where I used to live in Center City.
