Rhiannon Giddens: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Music • Views: 26,752

YouTube

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

May 28, 2020 | Bob Boilen — “We’re not doing my original songs,” Rhiannon Giddens says, before she and her partner, Francesco Turrisi, launch into an old spiritual, “‘cause with these kinds of emotions, the old songs say it best.”

Though acknowledging their good fortune — a place to live, a bit of savings, their children being safe — Rhiannon Giddens also pauses to tell us how the pandemic has altered their entire way of life. They canceled their tour of Japan and returned home to Ireland; Rhiannon lives in Limerick while Francesco lives a few hours away in Dublin where they recorded this Tiny Desk (home) concert. They’re finding comfort in being together, making music together, thinking of their families in both Italy and the United States, and hoping to comfort us all with some down-home tunes. And with banjos, fiddles, a bodhrán, and that stunning voice, it sure worked for me!

SET LIST
“Black As Crow”
“Spiritual”
“Carolina Gals”
“Last Chance”

Conservatives are the people throughout the nation’s history who burn churches.

We saw the Drops at The Parish not long after the release of “Genuine Negro Jig” in 2010.

They were breathtaking. Passing instruments around, the old claw-hammer style of banjo playing, the mix of African and Scots-Irish musical traditions- we were enchanted.

See that’s the thing about this.

The conspiracy theory alleges that in many different cities, loads of bricks were brought in and staged for violence.

Such a vast conspiracy to truck in bricks to multiple scores of cities would take many many people. The more people you add to a conspiracy to do anything, the harder it is to keep secret.

This video is the only one I can find about bricks and Dallas, repeated over and over again by multiple Twitter accounts.

And this, from Fayetteville, NC:

I would personally prefer to leave the conspiracy theorising to wingnuts. There is no evidence of a secret cabal bringing pallets of bricks into scores of cities. The second evidence comes forth (other than video pictures of bricks) then I’ll be more likely to be convinced.

I know, but have we seen the bricks anywhere else? The two nights of it were both in Dallas from what I’ve seen.

And you know who would have the organization to take advantage of something like this? The GOP.

And that’s as long as I’m going to wear the tinfoil.

There is a pile of bricks on the main street of my village right now, with two traffic cones next to them.

I could go out and take video of it and say “who’s staging these bricks? Could it be Satan the GOP/anarchists/wingnuts/somebody wanting to start violence in a town of 124?”

The reason the bricks are there are for replacement after the city sewage line in the area is repaired.

If I posted that as a video, others would have no way of knowing what those bricks are for, particularly since my town has no Website to check for things like contracts (you can only request paper copies from the village clerk in person or by mail).

We’re good.

Meanwhile in Omaha:

Omaha police use tear gas, make arrests as protesters stay in Old Market after curfew

The first was a peaceful but often emotional rally in the early evening in North Omaha, in which the presence of police was barely noticeable. It ended well before Omaha’s curfew started. More than 1,000 people, young and old, came together in the heart of Omaha’s black community to call for change.

The second, in the Old Market, involved a much younger crowd and seemed to be focused on defying the 8 p.m. curfew. An overwhelming show of force by local law enforcement, the Nebraska State Patrol and the Nebraska National Guard largely brought it to an end after a couple of hours of pushing people back, using tear gas and other tactics.

51
Belafon  May 31, 2020 • 10:36:29pm

It does speak of a fear on the part of those protesting that it would be easy to get people to become violent. We do actually have evidence of people attempting to incite it in a crowd but without much success. The problem is definitely that some have hijacked it for their own agenda.

I was trying to figure out how to make this in a joking fashion, but I thought some city ought to announce that no white people will be allowed outside to protest unless they are accompanying a black person.

Ted Cruz is also a lying asshole, because that’s not what Webster’s actually says. He clipped off part of the second definition so he could get his “violent overthrow” statement.

merriam-webster.com

1 : a person who rebels against any authority, established order, or ruling power
2 : a person who believes in, advocates, or promotes anarchism or anarchy especially : one who uses violent means to overthrow the established order

I would question the especially part, but that’s the part clipped off by the Senator from Alberta.

Lying for Jesus.

Meanwhile in the schizoid GOP:

It’s probably too much to hope for that Republicans will continue shooting themselves in the foot on absentee balloting all the way through the general election. Sure, Donald Trump can shout lunatic shit on Twitter about FRAUD and CHEATING and DEMS STEALING ELECTIONS via mail-in ballots. But will his lemming followers jump off the low turnout cliff with him?

So far the answer appears to be yes. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Republicans made up just 29 percent of mail-in ballot requests for next week’s primary, despite constituting 38 of registered voters in Pennsylvania. In this crucial swing state, which just adopted “no excuse” (i.e., no explanation needed) mail-in balloting, there were approximately 524,000 GOP requests, compared to 1.3 million for Democrats.

Indeed, some of those 524,000 voters may choose to go to the polls anyway during a pandemic, in deference to the Dear Leader. Lee Snover, chairwoman of the Northampton County GOP, reports that “more than one person” has told her that “Trump doesn’t want us mailing in, [so] I’m not mailing it in.”

Go with God, kids!

Fast-Track Permits Stay Blocked for Keystone XL, Other Pipes (Bloomberg Law)

The Ninth Circuit delivered a major blow to the energy industry Thursday, refusing to freeze a lower court’s decision to block a streamlined permit for Keystone XL and other pipelines.

The Trump administration and energy industry players lost their bid to sideline the ruling, which bars the Army Corps of Engineers from using a fast-track water permitting approach for new oil and gas lines.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said the government and energy companies “have not demonstrated a sufficient likelihood of success on the merits and probability of irreparable harm to warrant a stay pending appeal.”

Barring any Ninth Circuit reconsideration or a successful petition to the Supreme Court, the decision means the streamlined permitting process will remain off-limits for new pipelines while the parties file briefs and argue the broader appeal to the Ninth Circuit—a process that takes months.

As cities burned night after night and images of violence dominated television coverage, Trump’s advisers discussed the prospect of an Oval Office address in an attempt to ease tensions. The notion was quickly scrapped for lack of policy proposals and the president’s own seeming disinterest in delivering a message of unity.

Can true justice exist inside a rigid moral structure?

Religious people of many faiths will tell you “yes” (citing the Bible, the Qur’an, &c). They will insist there is an objective morality which all people can learn or discern.

Take the Ten Commandment’s stricture “Thou shalt not steal.” Seems pretty cut and dried. Theft is objectively wrong.

Even without a Bible, a non-religious person could make the argument that theft is objectively wrong.

A counter-example might be someone who comes across the plans of a terrorist to blow up an elementary school. Those plans do not belong to that person. Taking those plans to the police would be theft, but would save the lives of many people. Is that objectively wrong?

That brings up the entire question of property and property rights. Not at all a clear-cut or objective matter.

It was simple for a nomadic tribe; everybody knew who those sheep or that tent or that knife belonged to…but things started getting complex when we started owning land and creating currencies.

Alter it slightly. The terrorists’ plans are in a car with the keys in it, and the quickest way to steal the plans to take to the police is to steal the car (the modern version of a nomad’s camel).

That’s part of what apologetics is for.

Recently apologists reinterpret that to “thou shalt not murder.” That is not what the KJV in Ancient Modern English that Jesus spoke says though.

Then you get into the weeds on what murder is, since murder is defined as unlawful killing. So warfare is not murder, self-defence or defence of another is not murder, &c.

Minnesota’s Other Lady Senator, Tina Smith, Runs Against Very Garbage Man (Wonkette)

Tina Smith (DFL) is the junior senator from Minnesota. She is up for reëlection this year.

Being A Rightwing Asshole Doesn’t Count If It’s Your Job

And gosh, what a fine legacy of idiot comments [Jason] Lewis has from his radio career! You may recall him as the guy who complained bitterly, following Rush Limbaugh’s patriotic and biologically impossible 2012 rants about sluts using birth control, that men just plain aren’t allowed to call women sluts anymore, no matter how slutty those women dressed and behaved, like sluts:

Well, the thing is, can we call anybody a slut? […] But it used to be that women were held to a little bit of a higher standard. We required modesty from women. Now, are we beyond those days where a woman can behave as a slut, but you can’t call her a slut?

But have we really got to the point where you can’t refer to Madonna as a slut without being sued? I mean, Madonna has had a series of lovers, as have many in Hollywood. Now in the old days, what did we call this? Madonna dresses up in these sorts of prostitute-like outfits on stage, and she goes there and she sings and she shows half of her body. What did we call those people? 30 years ago? 40 years ago? 50 years ago? You can’t do that today, it’s too politically incorrect?

More on Jason Lewis’s wonderful radio commentary:

After plainly calling 1980s-90s pop star Madonna a slut in 2012, Lewis was, oddly, not sued. And a spokesperson from his congressional office explained, when the comments came up in the “me-too” news in 2018, that it was totally unfair to even bring up all that ancient history from six years before, because “This has all been litigated before, and as Congressman Lewis has said time and time again, it was his job to be provocative while on the radio.” Ergo, he cannot ever be considered responsible for horrible things he said way back in the distant past, in the job that won him the seat.

He also said other lovely things about women, like that time in 2011 when he mocked women for saying Herman Cain’s unwanted touching made them uncomfortable. Silly ladies! Then-radio guy Lewis explained Cain’s alleged behavior was no big deal, because after all, it’s not like he actually raped them:

I don’t want to be callous here, but how traumatizing was it? […] How many women at some point in their life have a man come on to them, place their hand on their shoulder or maybe even their thigh, kiss them, and they would rather not have it happen, but is that really something that’s going to be seared in your memory that you’ll need therapy for?

You’ll never get over? It was the most traumatizing experience? Come on! She wasn’t raped

This part takes the cake, as he is also a slavery apologist.

Also off limits, because it was in 2015 and he wasn’t yet in Congress, would be a post-Obergefell audio update to his 2011 book about states’ rights (they are good), where he explained that the federal government had no business in either outlawing slavery or legalizing gay marriage.

In fact, if you really want to be quite frank about it, how does somebody else owning a slave affect me? It doesn’t. If I don’t think it is right, I won’t own one, and people always say ‘well if you don’t want to marry somebody of the same sex, you don’t have to, but why tell somebody else they can’t. Uh, you know if you don’t want to own a slave, don’t. But don’t tell other people they can’t.

Germany requires masks in all public transportation and in all stores. There have been a few protests, but most people are quite reasonable about maintaining safe distance and observing the restrictions.

This will be held up by many as proof that Germany is a nation of brainwashed automatons…one which has only one-third of the number of cases per capita than the US and a much lower death rate.

Mattis, a graduate of Princeton University and New York University law school, is an associate at corporate Manhattan firm Pryor Cashman.

He was furloughed in April amid the coronavirus crisis, his employer confirmed.

U.S. retailers large and small have closed some of their stores across the country because of disruptions caused by the widespread street protests over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Target, CVS, Apple and Walmart all said Sunday that they had temporarily closed or limited hours at some locations for safety reasons. In some places, their stores have been burned, broken into or looted as protests turned violent.

Amazon said Sunday that it has adjusted its routes and suspended deliveries to keep its drivers safe in some cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and Minneapolis. A spokeswoman, Kelly Cheeseman, said Amazon is also abiding by local curfews that have required people to remain off streets after a specified hour at night.

This is about the crash of Pakistan Airlines Flight 8303 in Karachi on May 22. It is just incredible. I don’t like to judge fellow fliers, especially dead ones, but this was either suicide or some of the worst airmanship I have ever heard of. The pilots approached at 210 knots and 9 to 12 degrees glide angle rather than the recommended 140 knots and 3-6 degrees. They also failed to lower the landing gear. The plane scraped the runway, damaging both engines, then pulled up and started to go around for another attempt. During the turn the damaged engines quit and the aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood, killing 97 people.
COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE APPROACH PRECEDED PK8303 CRASH

The crew initiated a go-around and during that attempt for a second landing the engines which were damaged failed.

At no time - even during the second approach - was the undercarriage deployed.

Continuous alarms would have been sounding on the cockpit.

Did they just ignore those alarms? Were they so preoccupied with other things they just blew it off? I remember reading about a CFIT where the crew was preoccupied with a control panel light that had failed, though off the top of my head I can’t recall the flight number.

So does anyone have a way of phrasing that riots and looting don’t happen if the cops stop murdering black people during arrests, while simultaneously acknowledging that rioting is bad?

I’ve been focusing on the former, which has been exacerbated by the nationwide police policy of using reporters for target practice. Again, rioting and looting is wrong, but it’s amazing how quickly white people have forgotten how we got to this point in time.

Trump simply seems to have given up on the job. He’s had no policy on the pandemic for about a month now. He basically has no policy on recovering from the economic calamity. Trump has no policy because those around him have no policy. And the people around him have no policy because he’s fired everybody whose answer to national crises was more than “tax cuts” and “deportation.” So with nothing in the toolbox, he’s answering the unrest with the usual “ANTIFA! TERRORISTS!!!” BS that only plays to one group: his white bread, brain dead base.

In some ways, it does seem like the police were highly coordinated in their response - the response being to act like they’re under siege and respond accordingly - but in reality they’ve all been training for the same thing, that it’s their job to keep whites in power. And when the time came, they all acted according to their training. It’s how you would hope those in the military would act to an invasion if we lost communications. We just don’t need how they’re acting.

Judd Legum doesn’t address the white nationalist infiltration of the crowds, but he does address The “outside agitator” trope.

While there are certainly people attempting to exploit the unrest, there is a long history of government officials using the trope of “outside agitators” to delegitimize protests of racial injustice. That includes attacking the statements from MN on outsiders:

“I want to be very, very clear: The people that are doing this are not Minneapolis residents,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D), whose city is the epicenter of the protest, said Saturday. “They are coming in largely from outside of the city, from outside of the region, to prey on everything we have built over the last several decades.”

“Every single person we arrested last night, I’m told, was from out of state,” St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter III (D) said, “What we are seeing right now is a group of people who are not from here.”

Their comments were echoed by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), who said, “about 20 percent are Minnesotans, and 80 percent are outside.”

Arrest records tell a very different story. Investigative reporter Brandon Stahl reviewed 69 arrest records from Minneapolis-based police “for rioting, unlawful assembly and burglary-related crimes from Friday to Saturday.” Of those, 56 were from Minnesota, and five were “unknown.” There were just eight arrests of people from other states. In St. Paul, 12 of the 18 arrests were Minnesota residents. A city spokesman acknowledged his error and said the mayor “went with the information he had at the time.”

He Can Exist Only as President* of a Divided Country, an email from Charlie Pierce

Wish I could share the whole thing. He just is so good.

… The entire country has been on the edge of a crack-up since the returns started rolling in on the first Tuesday of November, 2016. An actual president would have been aware of that and worked to calm a country that his election had so caught by surprise. But, at almost every turn of his presidency, this president* has worked to keep the country on edge, to disrupt the “domestic tranquillity” that is a stated purpose of the Constitution he swore to preserve and protect. Where there is hatred, he sows anger. Where there is injury, resentment. Where there is doubt, uncertainty. Where there is despair, poison. Where there is darkness, destruction. And where there is sadness, desperation. There’s something that feeds his soul in feeding the soul of the country to the flames. He has nothing else. He can’t conceive of another way to live. He belongs to another entirely different species of parasite.

This is a perilous time. Before the uprisings, and before the pandemic struck, there were all sorts of warning bells and red flags that this president* was destroying institutional barriers and customs that were essential to keeping the country in balance and that, if a time of crisis arose, there would be nothing to block the chaos that would ensue. What all these warnings overlooked was the awful possibility that this chaos was precisely what the president* was counting on, that instability was a technique of political survival and of personal profit. That is where we are now, as another day ends and another night falls with the promise of smoke and flame and anger.

Judd Legum doesn’t address the white nationalist infiltration of the crowds, but he does address The “outside agitator” trope.

The potential problem with that may be that most of the arrests have been at the peaceful protests. At night, when the looting has occurred along Lake Street, the cops are nowhere to be found and no one is getting arrested.

He probably won’t actually get “25th-ed”; but the political result will likely be the same. When you start having to deal with states qua states; they’re going to be going to Congress, not the WH. What’s the endgame of the protests? Are there specific demands that could be met? What policy changes would address a vague demand for “justice”?

Perhaps it’s just in my nature to look for something concrete.

very few of the weak support are going to switch unless something monumental happens

if trump got all the undecideds right now (about 4% or so), he’d still lose

an unenthusiastic vote counts the same as an enthusiastic one

Biggest issue for Donny is that, unlike the last go around, this time he’s not an unknown quantity. He’s an incumbent president running for reelection and down 10 pts with less than 6 months to go. The larger the gap gets, the more electoral shenanigans Repubs have to do at the state and local level to keep the margins close enough for an EC win.

That’s why he keeps ranting and whining and wailing about mail-in voting - makes it much harder for Georgia-style touchscreen voting machines to magically lose just enough votes in just the right places.

That’s really why they’re trying to ram through judicial appointments and are dragging their feet on further CV-19 relief: They’ve lost the House and may very well lose the Senate as well, leaving them with no effective check on a Dem presidency. Mitch’s worst nightmare would be to arrive back to D.C. next January as Minority Leader, and the first move by Schumer be to neuter the filibuster.

The endgame of the protests is to get elected officials to take cops killing blacks seriously and do something about it. Before the protests started, before the video, the Minneapolis DA wasn’t going to charge the officer with anything. That is messed up.

The other day, Lindsey Graham was urging Republican judges over a certain age to retire now so they can fill those vacancies ASAP. You don’t need to be an expert at reading between the lines to get that it’s a tacit admission from Graham that he expects the GOP to get slaughtered this November.

It depends on which poll you rely upon, but I can’t see any incumbent in the last 30 years who was this far back in the polls and went on to win in November. Not without a strong third party candidate like Perot running and thus skimming off votes.

have y’all seen what the RNC wants Charlotte to do for the ‘convention’?

GOP planning for 19,000 in attendance, full bars and restaurants for Charlotte convention

- 19,000 people in the arena the whole time
- all the hotels and restaurants in Charlotte operating at full capacity
(defying the CDC)
just imagine the restaurants, bars, elevators, omg

it’s one thing to consider all the R’s that get exposed and will then retreat to the 4 corners

its quite another to think of all the local people that will be exposed because they live and work there.

the mayor and governor should simply say we will not sacrifice our citizens for your convention. please take it elsewhere and best of luck. (and yeah, go ahead and sue us)

True, in Russia’s autocracy, that’s how it’d go down.

In the US, there’s always the possibility that one of the governors tells Trump, “Blow it out your ass, you fat fuck.” And there’s not a damn thing Trump can do about it.
