Turns out the object of the Car Parade was Spencer Cronk, whose house is two blocks from ours. Interestingly enough, he was the the City Coordinator for Minneapolis from 2014 until he came here in 2018 as City Manager. Openly gay, married, and has a gorgeous little 1 1/2 year old girl he and his partner are raising.

Big jogger, runs by here every night. Nice guy.

June 1st, 2020

For over 100 years we have supported voices across generations, genders, races, religions, and movements. We’ve supported voices of peace and change. Voices of love and heartbreak. Voices of solidarity and solutions.

Today we are truly at a crossroads that will require the courage to make these voices, and our voices, matter even more. Racism should have no place in this world. Not in the past, the present, nor the future. Ever.

It’s time, again, to be heard.

Musicians and music have always found ways to inspire hope, drive change, and evolve culture in a positive way. So, let’s get through this crossroads together by uniting in our efforts to wipe out racism.

We hear you. We support you. We stand with you.

Yeah, but the only real rule is that their team is never responsible for anything—even the worst things they do—and everybody else is collectively responsible for everything.

Coincidentally, I’m sure, this means that the former can be violent and cruel and it’s understandable and forgiveable, while the latter must suffer violence and cruelty that is always deserved because their guilt is shared and unforgiveable.

Like a debt trap, but for murder, rape, and sadism.

This came from the CEO of my defense contractor company:

This weekend, across America, we saw multiple protests occurring against racism and brutality in the African American community. The pain and anger in our communities is understandable and palpable, and it is heartbreaking.

We’ve frankly seen too many similar stories in the past, and there is no immediate or easy solution. We must, however, start somewhere… and for us at L3Harris, it starts with a clear statement of what we believe and how we behave.

* We stand resolutely against racism in all its forms.

* We denounce senseless deaths and affirm unequivocally that acts of discrimination, hatred or violence will not be tolerated at L3Harris.

* We commit to living our values of integrity, excellence and respect. We do what is right. Always. Even when it is difficult.

* We not only value but seek out diverse ideas, perspectives, experiences and backgrounds. Our culture of inclusivity is core to our commitment to be the best in everything we do.

* We believe that involvement in our local communities strengthens our society, and we serve those communities both financially and through volunteer efforts - including L3Harris Investing For Tomorrow (LIFT).

* We support each other, and we overcome challenges and adversity by working as a team, and by trusting and relying on one another.

Clearly, change is necessary. Working together, I believe we can be part of the solution.

Be kind, be respectful, and take care of each other.

As an Episcopalian, I am so utterly offended - though not surprised - that FFVCS would use our Church as a political prop. Our Church feeds the poor. Shelters the homeless. Stands up for the oppressed. Denounces the caging of children. Believes in science and its intersection with faith. Here in Western NC, we are viewed as Communists, but whatever.

Sorry, but I just feel like that son-of-a-bitch opened his fly and pissed all over our sanctuary. FUCK DONALD TRUMP!!!!!

Well, the Trump crew put it together so the odds of it being a good photo-op was slim to none.

This atheist household has 3 Bibles. None are marked on the cover. All are labeled on the spine . Two are from the mid 19th century and one is from 1957.

It’s not. That photo shows him holding a copy of the Revised Standard Version (based on what the text on the spine looks like compared to the copy on my bookshelf.) That’s a common version at the more conservative parishes. The NRSV is the usual version at the rest but you’d see the difference in the gold leaf on the spine.

I’m just realizing that picture of Trump walking towards the church probably reminded him of appearing on WWF wrestling events, including the sound of an angry ‘audience’ jeering at him. No wonder he was pumping his fist. He was in his reality TV element. He LOVED it.

Here is my FB post from November 12, 2016 before I (most of us?) understood what a monster Trump really was:

Had a revelation this morning and the Google affirmed it. The nation did not elect Mussolini; it elected Hulk Hogan. He campaigns (and lives) like a WWE champion: bullies everyone, insults his opponents, boasts of his prowess, lies about everything, interrupts others, has no sense of decency or compassion, and needs to be surrounded by beautiful women. Fact checkers showed that he was number 1 — ahead of even Ted — in lies about past events. And now he has even stepped back from his trademark proposals.

Ok — I know wrestling fans will have better analogies

My apologies to Hulk Hogan.

Dude can’t even go to church without getting fucked.

Here’s a first-person account from the Rev. Gini Gerbasi, the Rector of a nearby St. John’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown:

Friends, I am ok, but I am, frankly shaken. I was at St. John’s, Lafayette Square most of the afternoon, with fellow clergy and laypeople - and clergy from some other denominations too. We were passing out water and snacks, and helping the patio area at St. John’s, Lafayette square to be a place of respite and peace. All was well - with a few little tense moments - until about 6:15 or so. […] Around 6:15 or 6:30, the police started really pushing protestors off of H Street (the street between the church and Lafayette Park, and ultimately, the White House. […] Suddenly, around 6:30, there was more tear gas, more concussion grenades, and I think I saw someone hit by a rubber bullet - he was grasping his stomach and there was a mark on his shirt. The police in their riot gear were literally walking onto the St. John’s, Lafayette Square patio with these metal shields, pushing people off the patio and driving them back.
[…]
WE WERE DRIVEN OFF OF THE PATIO AT ST. JOHN’S - a place of peace and respite and medical care throughout the day - SO THAT MAN COULD HAVE A PHOTO OPPORTUNITY IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH!!! PEOPLE WERE HURT SO THAT HE COULD POSE IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH WITH A BIBLE! […]

Hard to see how Trump comes out ahead by pissing off a priest.

The document Farhi references is new… it’s the FCC telling Cumulus Media it can sell stock to foreign entities without having to trigger that review process for every stock purchase.

The protests have reached the Nebraska Panhandle.

WATCH NOW: Peaceful demonstration draws dozens in Scottsbluff (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald):

Dozens of demonstrators walked the streets of Scottsbluff Sunday afternoon in an effort to bring awareness to the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week.

Organizers of two Scottsbluff rallies prioritized a peaceful demonstration after many similar protests had turned violent across the country over the past several days. One group met at the Guadalupe Center for a march through the city’s streets. A second group organized by Panhandle Equality met at Centennial Park for a candlelight vigil. Once the vigil was complete, many participants from that event joined the marchers.

We saw it live in Austin two years ago. It’s occasionally clunky, often majestic, and ultimately wonderful. Peter Bay, our Music Director at the Austin Symphony, who studied under Bernstein, worked for a year putting the show together, and one of his (Bernstein’s) daughters was at the show.

He was also the Music Director for the Hot Springs Music Festival for several years. A good friend of ours.

It was a lovely evening.

Oh, and the Principal Trombone at the ASO cut loose with some remarkably racist MAGA tweets on Saturday. On Sunday, both the ASO and the Austin Opera fired her.

A Statement from the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States on the actions of our so-called President tonight.

This evening, the President of the United States stood in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church, lifted up a bible, and had pictures of himself taken. In so doing, he used a church building and the Holy Bible for partisan political purposes. This was done in a time of deep hurt and pain in our country, and his action did nothing to help us or to heal us.

The bible teaches us that “God is love.” Jesus of Nazareth taught, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The prophet Micah taught that the Lord requires us to “do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.”

The bible the President held up and the church that he stood in front of represent the values of love, of justice, of compassion, and of a way to heal our hurts.

We need our President, and all who hold office, to be moral leaders who help us to be a people and nation living these values. For the sake of George Floyd, for all who have wrongly suffered, and for the sake of us all, we need leaders to help us to be “one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.”

The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

Once I said “I, William Andrew Lewis III,, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Anyway, San Diego statistics continue to show the same trends. Percentage testing positive is slowing declining.

I can guarantee you after this weekend and Memorial Day, that will reverse or the very least the downward trend will slow or flatten.

As others have mentioned here, it is clear that the belief that the military will uphold its oath to our country and won’t attack our citizens is not based on reality. Pompeo certainly illustrates that — first in his class at West Point — but last in loyalty to our nation. This military will do whatever the president asks of them. Prove me wrong.

[Embedded content]

Strictly speaking it is not illegal for any military aircraft to fly over the USA. If the military is using protests and such for training on urban warfare (due to all the accellerationists) then it is useful training.

If they are gathering intelligence for the civilian police, it is a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act (like conservatives care about the law).

Lots of people in that thread saying “we need good people like you to stay within the system and reform it from the inside.”

That doesn’t work.

For an officer (whether police, sheriff’s department, or military) the correct decision is to resign the commission. Moreover, by resigning the commission, he can now speak out, which he cannot do within the sheriff’s department.

“This was done in a time of deep hurt and pain in our country, and his action did nothing to help us or to heal us,” Curry wrote.

“The prophet Micah taught that the Lord requires us to ‘do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God,’ ” he continued, calling on Trump and others in power to be moral. “For the sake of George Floyd, for all who have wrongly suffered, and for the sake of us all, we need leaders to help us to be ‘one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.’ ”

From the people monitoring Russian media, there’s actually very little “America is dying, ha ha ha” reaction. The papers and “harder” news are reporting it reasonably straight. The talking head shows are mostly treating this as an outright political battle, where the Democrats are controlling black protestors and the Republicans are controlling the cops. This is typical of the political ultra-cynicism of the Russian elite, who can’t really understand anyone acting on principle. They consider the footage of Floyd’s death to be terrible, and actually just leaving it at that.

An interesting feature of the commentary is that they don’t see the cops as doing anything really wrong. For Americans, the police are there to protect the people. The racists will interpret that as protecting white people from black people, but the cops are there to protect. For Russians in general, the cops are there to protect the state and prevent unrest. Therefore, beating the shit out of protesters is just expected.

I don’t know if they’ve noticed that it’s really a cop riot, and the police forces are defying the will of many of the mayors and governors. I don’t think they could process that.

Czech cops in Prague used to be notorious for that, especially during the height of tourist season, but things have significantly improved over the last 19 years. It’s been chalked up to much better training and the adoption of high standards of professionalism.

First thing I learned with Moscow traffic police was never to have a package of American cigarettes visible, I kept them above the sun visor, and a pack of Russian papirosy on the seat, none of them wanted those.

When my sister-in-law goes to Russia, she always brings me back horrendous Russian cigarettes. (I wonder if she hates me.)

Once she brought me back a butane refillable gas lighter engraved with a blueprint drawing with specs for the F-4 fighter jet.

A Russian showed me how they used to take those apart and use them to roll joints…a trick that required two Russian pencils (not Western ones, they were too thick): dump out the tobacco, mix it with your shit, then stuff one pencil up the filter end, pour your gear back in and tamp it down with the other pencil.

Thinking it through, I take my last statement back a bit. The Russian cops have been getting somewhat better over the last few years (i.e. they will solicit bribes from you to tear up a traffic ticket, but not just shake you down on the street for a few bucks). There’s a bit of a shit disturbance now about a well known online “police ombudsman” who got arrested because he was criticizing the government’s labor abuses of police, and the cops have actually been taking protest actions (article here.)

So, while the run-of-the-mill cops are still there fundamentally to put down unrest, they are being considered increasingly squishy by the Kremlin. Accordingly, there’s now a Russian Guard (Rosgvardia) who are intended to be the real Praetorian guard fascist legbreakers, legally authorized to shoot and kill protestors.

Not to mention that we now have Sen. Lindsey Graham urging older Republican judges to retire ASAP so they can fill those vacancies. But like I said yesterday, this is actually a tacit, between-the-lines admission on Sen. Graham’s part that he likely foresees the GOP going down in flames in November and possibly being out of power for quite some time.

Interesting article in Deutsche Welle about how it isn’t exactly a walk in the park for black people here in Europe either: George Floyd killing opens racism wounds for European blacks.

There seems to be a common perception among North Americans that, since much of Western Europe is far more progressive about income taxes, universal healthcare, and the like, it must be miles ahead of the US on race relations. A few conversations with some locals here would probably disabuse them of that.

West Germans have been living with and among foreigners for decades and are generally okay about it, even if they are not always a model of tolerance and acceptance.

Things look somewhat different in former East Germany, which only knew guest workers from Vietnam or Korea, and exchange students from other third-world countries, who generally lived in segregated housing and were sent home when their stay ended.

I think we had a discussion a while back about this: after WWII, West Germans were brought up being taught that Germany had committed a great evil with its genocide, and this should never happen again. East Germans were taught that all the Nazis went over to West Germany and of course the DDR was a haven of tolerance and understanding.

Americans in general seem a lot more sensitized to race than a lot of Europeans, who, even if they mean well, just don’t get what’s offensive. Some of the Black Peter parades in Belgium and the Netherlands were just amazingly racist, with big-nosed Jewish characters and Sambo-like black people: most Americans’ jaws would just drop, but for a lot of local people it’s nothing. This is getting attention now, glad to say.

That is all very rooted in their colonial heritage, and colonialism, like slavery, is based on the notion that one race is superior to another. Until the late 80’s, chocolate-covered sugar cream treats were called Negerküsse and the brand logo showed crude caricatures of Africans…

West Germany allowed in Turks as guest workers after WW2 and…well, by German standards maybe it wasn’t bad, but Turks were definitely treated with the kind of contempt and othering Central Americans get in the US.

But Turks were also prime Neonazi targets on the multiple occasions there were fascist street culture flare-ups.

And while I haven’t checked on it lately to see if things have changed. , for many years there were a bunch of German-born people of Turkish descent living in a legal limbo w/r/t citizenship they didn’t get that status as babies and were being slow-walked as adults.

Germany amended it citizenship laws as of 2000 so that anyone born in Germany to a legal resident alien is automatically granted German citizenship. (I know this because my daughter, born 1998, was born an American but her subsequent siblings born after 2000 are German)

That word, “provincial”…..yeah, that describes the attitudes and behavior of a lot of Czech people. Much like their compatriots in the former DDR, there’s still an entire generation of Czechs - many of whom are now in key positions of power - who never really interacted with foreigners until after 1989. And here in Ostrava, I’d say probably a bit later than that. Prague, being the social, political and economic capital of the country, has always been a bit more open.

The first Chinese restaurant opened in Ostrava in the mid-1970s, but it was really only for the nomenklatura of the time (it’s still in business, though the ownership has changed hands). The first Mexican restaurant didn’t open here until 2017….only three years ago (and it does brisk business).

Authorities Use Tear Gas So President Can Pose for Photo

And FPing a comment from the Episcopal Bishop of Washington:

“He did not pray,” the bishop, Mariann E. Budde, said in an interview. Referring to the death of the black man in police custody that set off the protests, she added: “He did not mention George Floyd, he did not mention the agony of people who have been subjected to this kind of horrific expression of racism and white supremacy for hundreds of years. We need a president who can unify and heal. He has done the opposite of that, and we are left to pick up the pieces.”

re: #401 steve_davis

you know, this would take balls of steel, and would probably have his security detail losing its mind, but if Biden wants to win the election tomorrow, he should —with reasonable care—wander into the crowd of protestors and just have a dialogue. If they really wanted to burn Trump down, they could have Obama show up as well and put his community organizing skills to work.

rando commenter:

Joe Biden can say very clearly, « Donald Trump not only violated his oath to the Constitution. His dictator tactics endanger all Americans. According to Trump, if the NRA protests outside the White House when I am President, I can call in thé US military to assault them, hit them with tear gas and bullets, even though their protest is legal. That’s wrong, it is evil, it is illegal. And when I am President I swear that I will never turn our military on honest civilians in peaceful protest. You are allowed to disagree with President Biden… »

I thought that was one of the interesting threads in the first season of the 13th Doctor, the companions dealing with racism in England.

He mobilized faster to build that flimsy wall to keep peaceful protesters away from the WH than he did for any aspect of the covid19 response (other than blaming China for his failures - and that only after claiming China did a great job containing it). That’s not a sign of strength. It’s a continuing sign of weakness and a fragile ego who can’t take criticism and listens only to what he wants to hear.

His entire admin is geared to this - they tell him what he wants to hear, not what he needs to hear, and his instincts are awful by any standard other than knowing that the GOP will do whatever the fuck he wants them to do because they’re scared of his base and scared of him. GOPers and right wing lunatics like Coulter don’t like Trump not because of his policies, but because he’s incompetent at implementing them.

Meanwhile, we learn that foreign white nationalist groups are busy impersonating antifa as a way to infiltrate and coopt the protests against police brutality and institutional racism in policing and law enforcement.

too much could go wrong and it would be twisted on its head as Biden sympathizing with cop-killing terrorists.

He’s already being associated with cop-killing terrorists since many of his staff are contributing to funds to help those arrested for protesting. But the logistics of him walking into a protest would be too much, especially since we are still dealing with a pandemic.

The possibility that the Doctor could regenerate as a woman was heresy among some. That the Doctor could be a person of color was abhorrent to others - and that Jo Martin’s Doctor is officially canon as an earlier regeneration of the Doctor. Well, that’s blasphemy among a certain set.

After all this, I want to see Trumps in prisons. I want to see Trumps humiliated. I want the Trump brand to be ruined. In part because I’m sure there were contingency plans in place for doing just this*. And the Trump Administration didn’t scrap them right away like they did the pandemic preparation plans.

* - I meant in terms of converting places like a convention center into a operations headquarters. That it’d be done for “riot control” is probably a sub-section since they’d possibly need to do that for a number of reasons including dealing with natural disasters or some sort of very large industrial accident or fire.

Interesting read: A Roundtable on Jared Kushner’s Formative Years

In 2006, the 25-year-old Kushner bought the New Yorker Observer. He was full of self-confidence—and considerably less knowledge of the newspaper business. Two former Observer editors and a former reporter talk about the mind and management ideas of the man they knew.

McGeveran: The joke is that no one can do all of those jobs at once. If you know enough to solve the Middle East peace crises, how on earth would you have time to know enough about the other things? So it’s almost like that’s exactly where the fraud is. I’m reminded of a moment early in my period of interim editor. He was going to teach me how to be a highly important person instead of an editorial ragamuffin. He had me come to this event that was a dinner; there were 16 people at tables. Elon Musk was there. It was very powerful people. The idea was that he convened a group of people that was behind some magic curtain that I didn’t know about. He said I needed to learn how to have conversations with these kinds of people. The conversations were these philosophical, high-level conversations about the disposition of society and the world economy. It wasn’t political, mostly because it was so vague. It was just a very baffling room to be in. I think he believes there is this Nietzsche-esque plane that certain people are meant to exist on. Up there everyone is just a little dot. If you’re going to make a decision that’s going to impact the lives of millions of people, then you can’t listen to all this bullshit, all these ragamuffin editors and experts and analysts and scientists and stuff. They’re service staff to this layer of people who have this chosen quality. That was my first intimation that he might buy into that. That’s what happened. He talked about this conversion when he was on the campaign trail with Trump. He says that he saw this look in the eyes of people, and the people were gnashing their teeth and the government wasn’t paying attention to them. That has to be bullshit. I think it’s that he saw these people, and he saw the look in their eyes, and he thought, We can run the world if we can corral a bunch of people this way. Strictly speaking, that’s a form of nihilism, but I do think it’s actually raw elitism.

My emphasis.

NPR on the Photo-Op

President Trump’s controversial foray to St. John’s Church on Monday is generating widespread criticism, after police and National Guard troops physically cleared out demonstrators and used tear gas to allow a photo opportunity outside the church. The bishop who oversees St. John’s is among the critics.

“He used violent means to ask to be escorted across the park into the courtyard of the church,” Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington tells NPR’s Morning Edition. “He held up his Bible after speaking [an] inflammatory militarized approach to the wounds of our nation.”

The bishop continued:

“He did not pray. He did not offer a word of balm or condolence to those who are grieving. He did not seek to unify the country, but rather he used our symbols and our sacred space as a way to reinforce a message that is antithetical to everything that the person of Jesus, whom we follow, and the gospel texts that we strive to emulate … represent.”

I don’t have the full set any longer, but if you are patient on Ebay, you can find the MUCH better second edition (vastly better translations, not all of which are double-columned) for a decent price. Do not under any circumstances pay money for the first edition with all its various printings. Those are absolutely horrible translations.

Mattand  Jun 2, 2020 • 8:13:52am

I want to walk away from the news, but I feel I can’t because I need to make sure I’m at least partially educated about what’s going on. To wit:

• I just read about the BBQ owner in Louisville and that whole mess. The fact this guy used to feed cops for free, and they may have killed him is just fucking sickening. The fact that responding officers all turned off their body cams makes me think they had all intentions of firing their weapons, regardless of what was going down.

I’m still shocked that the mayor fired the police chief, presumably over that. Speaking of police chiefs,

• Fucking LA police chief. He’s what scares me. Blaming looters for George Floyd’s death, because they have time travel powers.

That’s the guy who worries me. Sounds like a MAGAt police chief of a major city. Trump calls him tomorrow and says to napalm Watts, this guy will do it with a smile on his face.

• Minneapolis police are firing rubber bullets at people standing on their OWN FUCKING PORCHES and that police chief is still in charge. Makes me wonder if he threatened the mayor and told him he’s going to do whatever he wants.

Beginning to wonder if we’re going to see scenarios where police are openly running various cities and towns; basically overthrowing civilian rule. Not all cops, blah blah blah, but in my admittedly limited experience, I have yet to meet a cop who even considers voting Democratic.

• Rumor is a the local landmark mall is going to be the scene of a protest today. If it is, I hope everything is peaceful. After watching how Philly exploded over the last week, I’m not holding my breath.

I’m not that near the mall, but I started calculating what I have weapon-wise in case shit spills over into the residential neighborhoods.

• Trump’s sinking poll numbers have in the low 40’s.

Why is that number not 30% or lower? Americans are the worst.

God, this is soooooooo fucking upsetting. This country really is splitting apart before our eyes. The anger I have at every person who voted for Trump or who refused to vote for Clinton is starting to make me a bit sick.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have donated $200,000 (£161,000) to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) amid nationwide protests over the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

The couple also posted a message on Instagram explaining their stance on the protests.

“We’ve never had to worry about preparing our kids for different rules of law or what might happen if we’re pulled over in the car,” they wrote.

“We don’t know what it’s like to experience that life day in and day out. We can’t imagine feeling that kind of fear and anger,” continued the post.

“We’re ashamed that in the past we’ve allowed ourselves to be uninformed about how deeply rooted systemic racism is.”

Lively also said that she and husband Reynolds “want to educate ourselves about other people’s experiences and talk to our kids about everything, all of it… especially our own complicity”.

The donation and message follow days of heated protests across major US cities.

Head of GrandSon1’s public charter school, conducting classes by Zoom, sent this. He is the only White Anglo boy (WAB?) in his 3rd grade class:

(school) Family,

Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2, (school) will be closed for the sake of our team and community.

Like many of you, I have spent the past week reading, watching horrific cell phone videos, grieving, and reflecting with loved ones. The events of the past few months and weeks have made it starkly apparent how systemic racism and inequities continue to impact and cut short the lives of Black and Brown people in our country. And all the great work in our schools and classrooms isn’t enough.

To my Black and Brown colleagues, scholars, and families, I can’t know what it is like to be in your shoes right now. I can’t imagine the pain, fear, suffering, and exhaustion. I will stand with our community to denounce the murder of innocent black men at the hands of police and to condemn the systemic inequities that lead to black and brown people being treated as lesser than white people. I can interrogate my own privilege and continue to strive for communities built on belonging, safety, and love. I charge my white colleagues to do this as well.

George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor’s killings, coming in the wake of so many, are tragic moments but represent an eternity of injustice, suffering, fear, exploitation, and brutality of black and brown people in our country, since before its founding.

In 2020 it should be obvious that Black Lives Matter. It should be obvious that police brutality and killing is wrong. It should be obvious that all children deserve to grow up in loving communities where their safety, dignity, value, and humanity is seen and welcomed.

I recognize that words can be powerful. But often, not enough. In that spirit, we wanted to take public action to stand with our community and also recognize the deep exhaustion, grief, anger, and fear.

Tomorrow, our schools and workplace will be closed for a day of reflection, mental health, and rest for our community, especially for our Black and Brown community members. I want to listen and process with our community. Please take time for yourself and your family as we all try to process, and don’t hesitate to be in touch if there is anything (school) can do to support you.

So glad they moved the hell out of Birmingham.

This year—vote for DNC and national convention delegates by email, possible online meeting later in the week.

If you’re wondering how this shitshow is playing in Peoria, apparently not well.

These pro-human rights/anti-government protests historically fracture the right, not the left. There are still a large fraction of conservative voters who, despite being selfish racists, don’t like the cops or The Gummint any more than they like minorities.

George Will, a person I detest heartily, has joined that throng: Trump must be removed. So must his congressional enablers. WaPo

Those who think our unhinged president’s recent mania about a murder two decades ago that never happened represents his moral nadir have missed the lesson of his life: There is no such thing as rock bottom. So, assume that the worst is yet to come. Which implicates national security: Abroad, anti-Americanism sleeps lightly when it sleeps at all, and it is wide-awake as decent people judge our nation’s health by the character of those to whom power is entrusted. Watching, too, are indecent people in Beijing and Moscow.

Yes they did. The County did not appreciate them being used as thugs.
The actions of some of the officers might belay that thought.

When I was doing user interface development and design, the first rule of good design that my team lead enforced, was to never provide an opportunity for a user to make a mistake. Although, even with our best efforts, users still proved to be far more creative and innovative (at making mistakes) than we had ever considered possible.

It seems to me that good leadership does it’s best to remove opportunities for officers to make bad choices. And that police officer actions are a direct reflection upon the leadership as well as the officer.

One of the old street fighting tricks. You place bottles, rocks, bricks, etc along the route of the planned area of conflict.

Years ago, back when I was working for an agency in L.A. that was doing internal affairs investigations of dirty cops (we were employed by various cities in SoCal, because the cities were tired of having the agencies whitewash brutality, and then having to pay $$ in court judgments), I had to have a meeting with the Customs & Border Patrol agents down in San Diego.

They were a wretched bunch.

My boss had warned me that they were guys who couldn’t get hired by any self-respecting police or sheriff’s department. Even the prison guards looked down on them.

Angry, menacing rednecks is the best descriptor I can make. Basically, the kinds of guys you run into drunk outside of a dirt-track race in smalltown America, where you just know they’re waiting for an opportunity to rat-pack someone. They’ll never fight even odds.

They are Trump’s people. I just paged this about how Trump is using them to crack heads in D.C., because they are the perfect dimwitted, racist brownshirt thugs he’s been looking for, and Stephen Miller has outfitted them with the very latest in combat-ready mass murder gear.

But his polling wont budge in the presidential elections? Still with a ceiling and floor of around 40%. This is the insanity and disconnect with the GOP. They don’t care what Trump does, and he’ll continue to get their support no matter how much the economy crashes or how many die.

Reminder: some voting for Trump in 2016 thought of him as the lesser of two evils. There are still people out there who do not like him, but won’t support the “socialist anti-white pro-abortion” Democrat, and will continue to vote for him to prevent the “demon-rats” from gaining power.

The original definition of “silent majority” was a euphemism for the dead.

The more famous (and likely more relevant) usage of it was the invocation of the term by then-Pres Nixon in ‘69 when he was confident that the majority of Americans secretly supported the Vietnam War and were not supporting the increasingly outraged protests.

For those who weren’t around and may have missed that page in their history books, Nixon ultimately found out that no such “majority” existed.

But this is a convenient trope either way: If the “slient majority” is large, then it’s large, and it’s more legitimate than the opposition. If the “silent majority” is small, too small to prevent Nixon’s resignation, then it’s been repressed by the oppositition, which is itself both immoral and unstoppable.
