Today is Primary Day in Philly. I would have preferred to be a the polls today but due to the virus I voted by mail. With all of the commotion going on I am also at home today. This will be only the second time I have not been at the polls since I have been eighteen. The other time is when my mom died. This morning I went to the local Acme to pick up a few things and found all of the shopping carts inside the store in the aisles. I got what I needed said hi to my favorite cashier and went home.

Also to Charles: I tried to view PM Trudeau’s comment and I got thrown out of LGF. Was there something wrong with that clip?

LOLOL

After a week of back-and-forth between North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, and national Republican leaders about plans for the party nominating convention, Cooper on Tuesday wrote that the convention as planned - with large crowds and tens of thousands in attendance in Charlotte - “is very unlikely.”

“With the Nation, the State of North Carolina and the City of Charlotte still under states of emergency it’s important to conduct the RNC convention accordingly. As much as we want the conditions surrounding COVID-19 to be favorable enough for you to hold the Convention you describe in late August, it is very unlikely. Neither public health officials nor I will risk the health and safety of North Carolinians by providing the guarantee you seek,” Cooper wrote to Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Republican National Convention President and CEO Marcia Lee Kelly.

From last thread:

re: #650 Targetpractice

re: #642 Hecuba’s daughter

The original definition of “silent majority” was a euphemism for the dead.

The more famous (and likely more relevant) usage of it was the invocation of the term by then-Pres Nixon in ‘69 when he was confident that the majority of Americans secretly supported the Vietnam War and were not supporting the increasingly outraged protests.

For those who weren’t around and may have missed that page in their history books, Nixon ultimately found out that no such “majority” existed.

I’m gonna partially disagree: while Nixon’s use of the phrase was likely just Nixonian bullshit: said “majority” did reelect him in 1972 - in a landslide. A landslide due mainly to the fact that the Democrats ran on what was, by 1972, very much Yesterday’s Issue: the Vietnam War, which had mostly wound down by Election Day.

frum / the atlantic

“If Trump seeks historical parallels for his reelection campaign, here’s one that is much more apt [than Nixon]. There was a campaign in which the party of the president presided over a deadly pandemic at the same time as a savage depression and a nationwide spasm of bloody urban racial violence. The year was 1920. The party in power through these troubles went on to suffer the worst defeat in U.S. presidential history, a loss by a margin of 26 points in the popular vote. The triumphant challenger, Warren Harding, was not some charismatic superhero of a candidate. He didn’t need to be. In 2020 as in 1920, the party of the president is running on the slogan Let us fix the mess we made. It didn’t work then. It’s unlikely to work now.

The one thing Trump has going for him is that 43% approve of him no matter what, and another 2-3% will vote for him because “the Democrat is worse.” That is why the GOP and the Russians will throw as much mud at Biden as they can to try to get 5-6% of the electorate who would never vote for Trump to also decide not to vote for Biden either. It’s just going to be a lot more difficult because he only has a few months to trash Biden while they had been defaming Clinton for decades, misogyny won’t factor in, and now people know that a protest vote could help get Trump reelected, while they thought it was safe in 2016.

The landslide was due to the fact that the best positioned candidate Edmund Muskie was forced out of the Democratic race early on by dirty tricks; McGovern got the nomination but then had problems with his original selection of running mate, Thomas Eagleton, who was revealed to have undergone electroshock therapy and was forced off the ticket. I don’t know if another candidate would have been more successful, but Nixon was probably going to win because the economy was doing well, the stock market was flourishing, and, as you said, the war was winding down.

The other factor in 2016 was that the Libertarian Party ran a “respectable” nominee in Gary Johnson - someone who had actually held statewide office as a Republican. That gave a lot of cover for some Republicans and center-right types to not vote for Clinton while also not voting for Trump. Johnson’s 3.25% nationally was the most votes a third party nominee received since Perot in 1996.

And this year they are running a nobody since Amash dropped out of the race.

Some historical context of approval/disapproval numbers at this point in past presidencies:

Obama 47.3 Approval; 47.1 Disapproval
W. Bush 44.4 Approval; 49.9 Disapproval
Clinton 55.0 Approval; 37.5 Disapproval
HW Bush 39.6 Approval: 51.1 Disapproval
Reagan 53.7 Approval; 38.0 Disapproval
Carter 38.5 Approval; 52.0 Disapproval
Nixon 62.9 Approval; 28.8 Disapproval

I just got a text that the closest cannabis smoke shop was closed due to vandalism. Here in Illinois the production has yet to catch up to the demand for bud. That shop usually only has vape and edibles.

I tried to reserve a pick-up time for the only fully-running shop near me and it took me four days. I eventually got through. I would guess they have about 3/4 of normal inventory, but for me a little goes a long way, so I’m probably good for the next few months. Still, I’ll make another journey in the next month or so to get some supplies before the second wave shuts them down again.

re: #605 Hecuba’s daughter

Let’s face it — does anyone here really think Trump believes in God? He’s not Pence. Anymouse is probably not around now — but i would argue that Trump is basically an atheist. He’s like his BFF Putin who uses religion to further his goals, but was raised in atheistic Russia, and I’m sure thinks believers are rubes who can be taken to the cleaners.

I wasn’t around at the time you posted this, but I am now.

The thing is, I don’t know. He says he’s a Christian. He displays a lack of knowledge about the Bible, but so do a lot of Christians. He’s apathetic about faith, but so are a lot of Christians. Whatever Presbyterian Church he is a member of has not excommunicated him.

Even with the strong statements yesterday by Episcopalian priests and bishops deploring his actions, none of them said “you are not a Christian.” I figure a pastor or priest should be able to make that determination, not me.

I don’t engage in “he’s not a real Christian” discussions. The same claims are made about Stalin (who went to an Orthodox seminary) and Hitler (who was never excommunicated by the Catholic Church).

Chester County, PA COVID-19 data:
Confirmed Cases: 2,864
Deaths: 253

+6 deaths over yesterday. Day-to-day confirmed case changes very hard to track due to the way they update the data now on the web-site.

It looks like there was a Memorial Day caused spike since right now 5/29 shows 89 new confirmed cases and that was a bit higher than the running (and currently constantly changing average.) There’s a drop from there to 5/30, but I expect that the reported confirmed cases for the end of May and beginning of June to increase as they process more testing returns (which I think is what is going on.)

Did a grocery run today. The Wegman’s protection efforts has started to scale back a bit. No one at the front entrance controlling rate at which people enter, and a secondary exit appears to be open now as well. Facial covering still required to go inside at least even though there are still people in there who don’t know how to wear masks correctly. Lysol/bleach cleaning products still not to be found, but everything else seems to generally be in stock.

All quiet on the cat front. Neighbor cat opted not to chase Tuxedo Cat when she had the chance after sneaking up on her. Neighbor cat also saw my open front door, came up to the doorway, but opted not to enter upon seeing Fat Cat sitting 3’ away on the far side of the cat barrier. Changed food up on Chat Noir away from his prescription diet stuff simply to get him to eat - I think that’s more important since him starving himself is not the solution.

Fun fact: Someone flying backwards when getting shot is a Hollywood fabrication.

An EXPLOSION can throw you backwards, but not getting shot. Now if you get shot, you might get knocked back a few feet or what have you but you won’t go flying through the air like in an action movie.

I came back from the Nam and tried to tell a buddy that. He was sure I was wrong. I said that when you get shot you just fall down. I mentioned that he had shot a duck with a shot gun, did he go flying backwards from the recoil? For every action an equal and opposite reaction? Ring a bell?
“Fucking know it all”, he muttered, “how about I shoot you and we’ll see?”

Medical Workers Fighting COVID Say Cops Are Attacking Them

From the story:

At the hospital, Valentine said some officers took a statement. Then he hired an attorney. Elena Cohen, Valentine’s lawyer, said Tuesday that she and her client are “certainly exploring all legal possibilities.”

“Someone getting seven staples in their head while complying with all laws—that seems to be excessive force,” said Cohen, a civil-rights litigator. “We’re reviewing videos and witness counts and will take whatever actions seem appropriate after that process.”

Hopefully, the priest and others who were assaulted by Barr’s goons last night “while complying with all laws” are also hiring attorneys.

Read up on the Geneva and Hague Conventions regarding Protective signs, and see if you are able to use the red cross/crescent/crystal for medics. However, I can’t stress enough that you need to abide by the limitations for protected objects to be protected. As I recall, red cross/crescent/crystal are protected both in times of war and in times of peace, and attacking them without proper cause is very bad optics for the attacker. NYPD is as much a problem now as it was years ago. Blue wall of silence. Refusal to purge department of those who abuse.

And they’re going after De Blasio for mere mention of accountability, while Cuomo plays into this game too.

There needs to be widespread and systematic reform.

For starters, every fucking department in the nation that gives a presser about protest arrests needs to be asked how many cops were arrested for excessive force in said protests (in places where documented cases have occurred within the past week - to set a limit). Given that the answer is virtually none of those have been held accountable in any fashion, that’s why these protests continue. The cops aren’t going to get ahead of the protests because they keep revealing the protesters are right. The cops are out of control and don’t give a shit about persons of color and that they’ll go full fascist at the behest of the Trumpists and white nationalists in their midst.

Back in 2018, Buzzfeed published NYPD disciplinary records, and it found the same people accused of abuse over and over, and they never got fired or disciplined.

319 officers were found to have engaged in conduct worth firing for, but they still have their jobs.

At least 250 employees faced accusations of using excessive force, threatening someone, getting into a fight, or firing their gun unnecessarily. Some faced only minor penalties. School safety agents Rufus Felder, Lydia Goodwin, and Timothy Wheeler, for example, each lost five vacation days after using excessive force against students. After striking someone on the head and threatening to kill two people, Detective Denise Rinaldi lost 20 vacation days.

NYPD rules say that, barring exceptional circumstances, officers who lie about a “material matter” must lose their jobs. But of the more than 100 employees in these files who were accused of lying on official reports, under oath, or during an internal affairs investigation, only a handful were fired, while others were docked anywhere from a few days to a month of vacation time. Officer Alexis Valdez, for example, lost 30 vacation days when he was found to have given false testimony to a grand jury.

Of at least two dozen officers accused of conducting illegal searches, three-quarters suffered only a verbal reprimand, the loss of a few vacation days, or a similar penalty. Officer Erlene Wiltshire lost five vacation days after the department found she conducted a strip search without her supervisor’s approval or a reasonable suspicion that the individual had concealed evidence under her clothes.

The department found at least 16 employees falsified records to collect overtime. Sgt. Ruben Duque, for example, submitted false overtime claims 93 times. He was put on probation, forfeited 30 vacation days, and ordered to pay back $6,000. Duque remains on the force today and collected over $50,000 in overtime pay in 2017, according to the latest New York City payroll data.

The process is broken, the Unions hold tremendous sway, even in political elections, and prosecutors need them to go after criminals (who aren’t wearing blue).

New York City mayors and New York State governors have almost always hated each other.

among other reasons… the state administers the federal mass transit money, and way too much of it somehow ends up going to the municipal bus systems in Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, Schenectedy, White Plains, etc. Then there’s not enough to do NYC subway maintenance or new construction, the mayor gets pissed off, and the state legislature laughs because they’re mostly red districts and they hate the city. Then when the legislature is forced to send funds to the city… too much goes to Staten Island.

NYPD is as much a problem now as it was years ago. Blue wall of silence. Refusal to purge department of those who abuse.

And they’re going after De Blasio for mere mention of accountability, while Cuomo plays into this game too.

There needs to be widespread and systematic reform.

the police accountability problem is very similar to the gun accountability problem

- there is (apparently / hopefully) a small minority who are demonstrably dangerous, irresponsible, careless and reckless…

- the other 95%+, the responsible ones, for some reason do not want to create a fair system to purge out the worst of them.
-probably they fear they might themselves get swept up in a system of accountability

- so they all get tarred with the same brush
some for being the idiots
the rest for protecting and enabling them

Had no idea about the rise of suicide in the armed forces. I’ve known that morale was a problem. Two of my cousins are in the armed forces right now so I’ve definitely tried to be on top of military news more since then.

Imagine finding out you hate your job and not only is it nearly impossible to leave before your contract ends, but, if you try it will ruin your chances to get a lot of jobs after you leave.

re: #254 sagehen

New York City mayors and New York State governors have almost always hated each other.

among other reasons… the state administers the federal mass transit money, and way too much of it somehow ends up going to the municipal bus systems in Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, Schenectedy, White Plains, etc. Then there’s not enough to do NYC subway maintenance or new construction, the mayor gets pissed off, and the state legislature laughs because they’re mostly red districts and they hate the city. Then when the legislature is forced to send funds to the city… too much goes to Staten Island.

42% of the state lives in NYC (8.3 million out of 19.45 million). NYS GDP is $1.7 trillion. NYC is a huge percentage of that (the NYC combined statistical area has a GDP of $1.5 trillion, but that includes outside 5 borough). It’s a disproportionate percentage of the economic power of the state, and it gets back proportionally less from NYS than it delivers in revenue.

It’s the same situation as blue states sending more revenue to the feds than they get back. In fact, it’s perhaps even worse than the typical situation (balance of payments). NYC never gets back what it pays to the state. That’s why taxes are even higher and they’re at the behest of the rest of the state on MTA projects - Cuomo is notorious for messing with the MTA and forced the ouster of effective leaders like Byford because he was getting too much good press for fixing Cuomo’s mess of accelerating the 2A subway by taking funds from other higher priority projects.

Science time y’all!
The effect of the promiscuity stereotype on opposition to gay rights

Abstract

Opposition to gay rights is prevalent in countries around the world. Recent correlational research suggests that opposition to gay rights may be driven by an interaction between one’s own short-term mating orientation (i.e. willingness to engage in casual sex) and representations of gay people as sexually promiscuous. Here, we experimentally manipulated representations of gay men by randomly assigning participants to read one of two versions of a fictitious newspaper article, one of which contained faux scientific evidence confirming the stereotype that gay men are promiscuous, and the other containing faux scientific evidence refuting the stereotype. We found that the manipulation interacted with short-term mating orientation (STMO) to predict opposition to gay rights, such that low-STMO individuals (i.e. more averse to casual sex) exhibited more support for gay rights when assigned to read the stereotype-refuting article compared to the stereotype-confirming article, whereas high-STMO individuals (i.e. less averse to casual sex) were not significantly influenced by the manipulation. We discuss the implications of these findings for the study of antigay attitudes, as well as for recent societal changes in acceptance of homosexuality./blockquote>

north carolina says nuh-uh and maybe buh-bye

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) rejected the GOP’s plans for a full-fledged convention in Charlotte, telling Republican officials the only way the convention would move forward is with proper health protocols in place, Politico reports.

Said Cooper in a letter: “The people of North Carolina do not know what the status of COVID-19 will be in August, so planning for a scaled-down convention with fewer people, social distancing and face coverings is a necessity.”

“Neither public health officials nor I will risk the health and safety of North Carolinians by providing the guarantee you seek.”

With respect to the union chief, it really didn’t help his case that he opened his big racist yap and said that the officers were “wrongfully terminated” and should be reinstated immediately. That immediately drew fire from literally everybody with a functioning brain who doesn’t want to see the union permanently busted.

Wonder if a new term like “Camdened” might make it into the vocabulary as various localities raze their police departments to the ground in order to start completely afresh.

The Dow ended up 267 points. Someone expects to get rich behind all this shit.

All those broken windows need to be replaced. All the looted stores have to buy truckloads of replacement merchandise. A lot of the people who get evicted because they can’t pay their rent were rent-controlled and the new tenants will pay a lot more. And the newly homeless will be moved to some federally-funded shithole with inadequate maintenance.

Ya know, I’m generally in favor of unions, but it just seems like police union heads are the worst enemy that police could possibly have. They’re like the friend who, when you say you’ve had too much to drink and shouldn’t drive, tells you not to be such a pussy and hands you a 6-pack ‘For the road’.

I don’t always log in. Sometimes I just read.

Anglican theology is frustratingly non-commital on some points. If someone claims to be a Christian, we can say “your actions are not Christian in nature,” but we’d never say, “You are not a Christian.” All are open to salvation. Even Trump, though I rather doubt he would ever have enough self-reflection to right his ship. Still, there is “A Christmas Carol” as an indication it can happen.

Naaah. He’ll just need to clean house a bit and make the norms normal again. We can’t apologize for Trump. We just have to be there when the other countries need us.

Pretty much. Everyone who is paying attention overseas understands the basics of domestic US politics: European papers talk about Barr and Mueller and Pelosi and Biden in headlines like it was domestic news. The US is hardly a black box.

Foreign governments have now gotten used to two American governments: the working level, which is predictable, law-abiding, and basically the same as always; and the nutjobs in the White House who run in and blow shit up.

Really hoping Maine sends her home this fall.

Maine Democrats are absolutely furious with her for expressing her “concern” about the possibility that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh may have committed sexual assault and then voting to confirm him anyway. They even raised $4 million to give to her opponent. [whoever wins the nom). That opponent is most likely going to be Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon.. In the most recent poll, Gideon is leading Collins by 9 points, and this is before she gets the $4 million[*], which is a huge amount in rural Maine. It’s too early to say that Collins’ Canada goose is cooked, but if there is a Democratic wave this year, it will be goose on toast for her.

No polls, but considering how briskly military units have geared up (like appropriating the LA Convention Center as a staging base about as quick as possible), a General and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff overseeing things in DC in fatigues, and the lack of statement from anyone else in the military to the contrary, that kind of sends a message, doesn’t it?

The Chair of the Joint Chiefs was throwing his weight around.

As for people in the military making a statement, that’s explicitly against the law. Officers can resign their commissions and then speak, enlisted people cannot do the same.

Being atheist, I don’t have a god in this fight, but to me, Trump’s actions speak of a man who doesn’t believe in any power larger than himself, and who believes there are no consequences to his actions, in this world or the next. I’m not the one to declare him Christian or not, but I can tell you that the Christians in my family are very, very different.

If Trump DOES believe in any deity, then it’s like Zaphod Beeblebrox, coming out of the Total Perspective Vortex declaring it showed him just how amazing he really is.

A Trump Christmas Carol (selected scenes):

Bob Cratchit: please, Mr Trump, I’d like to get home early today, it is Christmas Eve after all.
Trump: Get me a Diet Coke, dammit!
Cratchit: But can I go after that?
Trump: Huh? Where’s my phone, I need to tweet.

Ghost of Christmas Past: behold, Donald
Trump: That’s Mr Trump to you! Mr President, actually
GOCP: Look, asshole!
Trump: Damn, Ivanka was fine at that age
GOCP: She’s 15, dude… you know, fuck this…

Ghost of Christmas Present: look at the love in the house Cratchit
Trump: This place is a shithole. I wonder if I could get the building on the cheap?
GOCP: You’re missing the point
Trump: some paint, new carpet, I could charge double on the rent
GOCP: you know, fuck this

Ghost of Christmas Future: *waves toward empty graveyard*
Trump: *dicking around on phone*
GOCF: *knocks phone out of Trump’s hand; waves at grave*
Trump: How dare you? And what is this? My tomb is going to be so huge, the best! Believe me.
GOCF: you know what, fuck this

As a Jew, I have total sympathy with this approach.

If you’re born of a Jewish mother, you’re a Jew. Even if you’re atheist, Buddhist, non-observant, if you’re a hideous embarrassment and we really wish you weren’t, whatever. Still a Jew.

The only way a Jew can become not-a-Jew is to decide, of your own free will, to become Christian or Muslim.

re: #403 Welcome to The Imbleachment (dangerman)

jones squeaked out over moore not because moore is/was stupid but because he was reprehensible to just barely enough people

Moore lost because his gun was small enough for a purse and his horse was demonstrably the brains of the operation. And they never saw us coming.

Those are some very pretty horses. And their riders have excellent posture.

Just hope that they don’t run into any fireworks, flash-bangs or rubber bullets. They’re not immune to bullshit.

I loved and love disco. Disco bashing comes out of hating the fabulous people who made the music. Yes, after a while it got a little repetitive, but the alternatives were either weepy rock or retread stuff. KC and the Sunshine Band still makes me dance years later, and there’s Sylvester and Donna Summers, and all the others. Dance, baby Dance.

Donna Summers, RIP. That lady from Dorchester was gone too soon.
[taking the bag with eyeholes off my head. Yeah, I love disco!]

Openly engaging in brutality, knowing they are being filmed, and not caring. The US is a fascist police state.

…and the Stock Market celebrates.

Stupider than Roy Moore. I didn’t know such a creature existed.

Never underestimate Alabama…….

Well, Lara Logan, after having her bullshit Antifa crap debunked, now thinks she’s Nelson Mandella, so there’s that.

What are they going to do when SOROS dies? There will be a lengthy period of mourning from the right-wing lunatics I fear.

Who gets charged with animal cruelty if the police tear gas the horses?
