Colbert at Home: Trump Sics Military on Peaceful Protesters and Clergy to Make Way for Bible Photo Op

Politics • Views: 21,809

On Monday, the President of the United States ordered military police to fire on peaceful demonstrators assembled outside the White House, including church clergy members, so he could walk to St. John’s Church to pose with a Bible for the most bizarre and pointless photo op of this presidency to date. #Colbert #StephenAtHome #Monologue

Trump pushed the National Enquirer to investigate the Joe Scarborough intern murder conspiracy theory. But the tabloid couldn’t find any proof it was true.

Ergo: Soros must have infiltrated the National Enquirer…

Among the things I never thought I’d live to see: a Black Lives Matter protest in Yorba Linda (my “home town”).

The diverse crowd swelled near Main Street and began marching toward Imperial Highway, chanting “What’s his name? George Floyd!”

Their signs read “Black Lives Matter,” “Enough is Enough,” “I Can’t Breathe” and “Who polices the police?”

Passing motorists on Imperial Highway honked their horns in support as protesters cheered in response. A California Highway Patrol vehicle monitored the demonstration.

For those wondering, that’s about 2 or 3 blocks from the Nixon Library/Birthplace/Burial Site.

10AM CDT Update: Tropical Storm Cristobal is forecast to move toward the northern Gulf into the weekend. Regardless of the track or intensity, heavy rainfall is possible. In addition, there is a possible risk of some coastal flooding. Stay weather aware

Get out the sharpie and send it to a Blue State!

Meanwhile, here on the Rhine, weather radar says that the next big batch of thunderstorms is bearing right down on us and will hit us in about an hour.

(I am about halfway between Frankfurt and Koblenz, right where the squiggly white line (the Rhine) tangents the squiggly black line (border between Hesse and Rineland-Palatinate)

re: #348 John Hughes

So he views the protesters as patriotic martyrs being killed by foreign invaders. How odd

He knows that is an image that his target audience will just lap right up.

Actually, I see the iconography of McNaughton’s cartoon* as being the opposite: “ordinary Americans” as the “patriotic” martyrs -note the MAGA cap on the central figure** - being killed by domestic “enemies” : the black-clad “anarchist” boogeymen Trump and his creatures have tried to blame-shift anything and everything onto. Still stupid, though….

*”Cartoon” because, IMO, that’s basically what it is. Despite Jon McNaughton’s decent grasp of technique (and ready familiarity with much “classic” iconography), most of his pictures are fundamentally oil-on-canvas versions of hackneyed right-wing political cartoons. Attempts to “elevate” unserious snark to the level of “serious” art. Which usually fail.

**Pace Calochortus, I see the middle figure more as “dark-skinned Indo/Pakistani” than “black”. Maybe it’s the ball cap, but he looks like guys I see behind the counter in nearly every bodega/convenience store in NY…

You’re probably right. I wasn’t really looking at the detail.
If in fact, the central figure is a Trumpster of color being murdered by shadowy figures, this makes even less sense than I thought.

This looks good. Based on the famous novel “Japan Sinks” (日本沈没, Nihon Chinbotsu) by Sakyo Komatsu.

Two live-action films have already been made, one in 1975 and the other in 2006 (never seen the ‘75 version). This is the first anime to be made of it.

Premiers on Netflix on 9 July.

In fact, I just heard someone on NPR saying she had been following results of some of the Memorial Day gatherings and either people weren’t being tested adequately, or they weren’t big spreading events. Possibly because they were outdoors.

In a related vein, I’ve been following the cases in Butte County, CA following a Mothers’ Day church service and while Butte Co. has not said they’ve linked the majority of cases to that service, there was a bump in the cases a week or two afterwards which now seems to be easing off. There does not appear to be a similar increase in cases in the surrounding counties.

So like 20 years ago I wanted to go back to school and I wanted to start RIGHT NOW but it was in the middle of a regular semester. An ex cop co-worker told me about this school that a lot of cops go to and it has irregular semester classes called Mount Senario college. So I signed up and took a few classes to get my beak wet. This was basically a diploma mill. My classes filled with cops and no kind of rigorous study. They basically show up, get the credits. Needless to say I was disappointed as I was preparing for an engineering degree and I learned nothing. They lost accreditation shortly after my time was up. But I remember thinking in class, this is corrupt and everyone here knows it.

This is the next stage in dictatorship.

First, the courts. Which Moscow Mitch is obediently doing.

Then the nepotism & corruption to make sure the Right People are onboard.

Then identifying a hated minority as the enemy. See: “Antifa”

Then move against what remains of the free press.

With the press out of the way, the regime can then proceed with impunity, because the vast mass of the public will never hear of their crimes, or their crimes will be framed as “protecting the people” by their propaganda outfits.

My lesson in real time potential transmission of exhaled virus bodies:

Pulled into a grocery store parking space, and had my front PS window down. I don’t smoke and don’t allow smoking in my car.

While putting on my gloves, I suddenly tasted cigarette smoke.

(Didn’t have my mask on yet, but don’t think anything less than a N95 would have
made much difference.)

Looked over to the right and the guy in the car to my right, 10 - 15 ft away, was smoking a cigarette with his DS window down.

He wasn’t blowing huge clouds of smoke, just the usual inhalation & exhalation.

FUCK!!

Lesson learned.

Something about having tanks in the streets, mass unemployment, and a raging pandemic *does* tend to focus the mind on covering more than just “Har-dee-har, didja see what Trump said today on Twitter! Gobble gobble gobble …”

It was fast-food news. Easy. Required no investigation, no spending, no extra staff. Just: click on Twitter, here’s a story that will fill today’s 5 p.m. timeslot.

Years ago, when I was still married, my ex asked me to throw away a plant that was pretty much dead. She couldn’t find the words “throw out”, so what she asked me was, “Honey, could you please take this plant and liquidate it for me?”

I burst into laughter and then explained to her that for a lot of English speakers, “liquidate” is a euphemism for “kill”.

Everybody has at least a few little things that drive them pedantic. “Free reign” instead of “free rein” is one of them. (Although that one is really easy to typo or get auto-incorrected.)
Using “affect” and “effect” incorrectly also gets to me a little bit.

He seems to think this alternate bullying/bootlicking behavior towards the Chinese leadership is going to get him some nice deal.

It just reminds everyone that his travel ban didn’t actually ban travel.

Why now ban Chinese airlines, if they were already banned as part of his supposed covid19 response?

The reality is that there are a bunch of airlines flying NY-Beijing right now, and Air China is just one. With all the code sharing, have fun trying to stop them from flying without taking out other countries’ airlines too.

But it is also about demand, and right now there isn’t any - not with quarantines seemingly required on both ends (although how enforced they are entering the US is an open question). You’d have to quarantine yourself for longer than many people would otherwise stay there, and then quarantine after the return flight.

Not that Trump gives a shit about the specifics. He just needs to bluster with bulkshit.

Now the waiting game for VP. I’m hoping for Harris but there are a lot of great women that are being looked at so I think I’m going to be happy with the decision either way and I trust Biden who was sinking Bork’s SCOTUS nomination when I was in diapers to make a good decision here. This is an important decision but I trust Biden and his team 100%.

It’s an incredibly important decision, Biden will by 81 in 2024, so the odds of him serving a second term are minuscule. He’s effectively picking the frontrunner for 2024, if not the nominee themselves.

6’3”, 244 lb puts you at the lower limits of obesity as defined by BMI*. Given that trump isn’t the sort that is carrying around a lot of muscle, that’s probably a fair definition of him. They couldn’t even get him to 29.x to get him to the overweight category.

*I think BMI is mostly a worthless measurement because it doesn’t consider body composition. For example, BMI says that both LeBron James and Patrick Mahomes are considered overweight. Which is sort of ridiculous.

The ones on Facebook who were opening complaining about tyranny in North Carolina due to stay-at-home orders and the closure of state parks have been complete crickets over the past few days.* Once the state parks reopened they seemed to decide that everything was tolerable.**

* - One tossed out a single post about the Castle Doctrine and if they were faced with protesters while in their car and “thought themselves threatened” they’d willingly run over the protesters. (Saw this from the same thing when the Ferguson protests spilled over into blocking highways as well.)

** - Their outrage seems to be directly proportional to how much they are inconvenienced. Since most of the current unrest is in cities which they live well outside of they don’t seem to care much - or at least vocalize much in that direction.

One of the others has retreated into putting up lots of Catholic imagery - like that will generate divine protection.

Way way way off topic regarding my impending retirement (5 weeks):

I received two letters from the Social Security Administration this week asking for more info before they can process my applications for Medicare and SocSec, one from Chicago and one from St. Paul. Called both offices today and everything appears to be OK now, but then the woman in Chicago asked if I want to start SocSec in June instead of August. I was planning on waiting until I was done with work but the Chicago office told me I could start right away because my 66th birthday is late this month. YAY!! I am now officially an old.

Gotta say that everyone that I’ve ever talked to at SocSec are the most helpful, generous and pleasant people I’ve ever dealt with about bureaucratic issues. It’s pretty amazing.

I never lost power or internet. Walked over to pet store a few blocks away for cat food and their power is out. I also see the local diner and bar are prepping outdoor seating since they’ll be able to use in a few days. The diner already had a patio and such. The bar is constructing something in the parking lot right now.

Heh. Im not gonna fight, I just want ~15 watts in that old Princeton Reverb vibe.

A lot of the time, if I am not going through headphones, I use the power cut switch to drop it to .1 watt. My Silvertone is around 22 or so watts and if I ever turned that up here, pretty sure I would get evicted. It’s kind of crazy to me that a single watt can make so much sound. Doesn’t take all that many watts to get to where you feel it as well as hear it.
J Mascis plays with 3 hundred-watt stacks a few feet behind him (with a fender combo similarly close and pointed directly at his face. And he wears earplugs… he said he likes to feel the sound. 300+ watts must rattle his bones pretty good!

we need to stop giving this oxygen
we’ve been over and over it
and it’s been gamed out every way the smart people can think of (lgf)

unless he wins reelection, his term ends on 1/20/21 at 12:00 noon
even if no one else is sworn in
there is no mechanism for him to ‘stay in office’ / refuse to leave

if the election is anywhere close, he would have to make many, many legal challenges - not just ‘one’. Because there is not just one election. They are administered by states and run by counties (where the counting takes place)

I wish I could agree, but Trump has shown amazing ingenuity about exploiting the weakness of US laws to his advantage, and he’d almost certainly still have the entire GOP behind him, or most of it even if some of them do take a stand — which is almost unthinkable at this point.

I’m not feeling all that comforted knowing that the laws are against him, to be honest.

Agree. And everyone needs to a) burn the last paragraph of the article into their brains b) develop any practical steps you can dream of to prevent the scenario described:

I have incredible respect and admiration for our constitutional system, but I’ll go back to one of the points you made, which is that the system really assumes that political actors have absorbed the norms that make the system work. But if you have a president who ignores those norms; if you have a party that ignores those norms, that continues to facilitate the rejection of those norms; and if you have a fractured media universe that rewards the president for rejecting those norms, then we’re in a very dangerous situation.

The only real way to avoid this is to make sure we don’t enter into this scenario, and the best way to do that is to ensure that he loses decisively in November. That’s the best guarantee. That’s the best way that we can secure the future of a healthy constitutional democracy.

Yeah that ain’t it, cops in every major city get paid very well. Between base earnings, overtime, pension contributions and assorted benefits the tactical crew chief across from me makes well over $300K per year. The US has some of the best paid and supported law enforcement in the world, which is why this isn’t a classic corruption issue.

It’s first and foremost an issue of racism, and then more broadly of overweening aggression, DARVO and the psychology of in-group bias that results in cops reflexively defending the institution of policing instead of the society the institution purportedly exists to serve.

Right after I posted the video of Beau of the Fifth Column last night, my Internet service died. (Apparently some piece of equipment died in the central office. The telephone company just restored the town’s Internet service)

From the last thread on the misprinted ballots in Baltimore:

re: #199 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀 No Capt’n😷Trips

Here our county discovered a few days before the Democratic Primary that the ballots were misprinted for my school board. The school board election was not a primary, it was the election.

The county sent letters to everyone notifying people of the error (the error said “select one” when the correct line should have been “select three”)

The county also hand-counted every ballot for the school board election rather than scan them. (I’ll grant Baltimore’s 1st city council district election is probably a bigger deal than my school board.)

The election commissioner said they would rather get the election done right than get it done quickly. There were poll watchers from the Dems, Republicans, and Libertarians on hand to ensure the hand counting went as planned; there were no complaints.

imagine, come January 20, that we don’t have a president. By the terms of the 20th Amendment, Trump ceases to be president at noon on January 20 and [Mike] Pence likewise ceases to be vice president.

At this point, by the terms of the presidential succession act of 1947, the speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, could become acting president, but only if she resigns her House seat. But what if Trump continues to insist that he has been reelected and is the rightful president? Imagine if, come January 20, Trump stages his own inauguration ceremony with Clarence Thomas issuing the oath of office.

If you’re going to follow the constitution you say applies, then none of the House members are in office. Likewise, 1/3 of the Senate. The Senate will change to Democratic hands, and whoever the senate majority leader is will become president.

re: #340 The Pie Overlord!

No, because the military swears an oath to the Constitution, not to the President. And even if they did swear an oath to the President, Trump would not be that President.

Secret Service will haul his lard ass outta there like Hannibal Lechter on a forklift.

The military aren’t the only armed branches of the federal government. The Border Patrol are Trump men, and he could potentially deploy them to D.C. to help him retain power.

Yes, we win the election first, then we prepare for a national strike and massive demonstrations when Trump tries to cling to power.

This.

Also, let me tell you how I think things will most likely play out:

Trump loses on Nov. 3 in a landslide of Biblical proportions. For about a week, maybe two, he rage-tweets every day about STOLEN ELECTION, VOTER FRAUD, COLLUSION, FILING LAWSUITS!!! Meanwhile, behind the scenes, even Trump’s fluffers are quietly dropping hints and nudging him. Let’s not forget: Even despite this pants-on-head stupid incident we just witnessed this week, his actual most dangerous and destructive boasts have been curbed by somebody. We don’t know who. At some point, maybe some actual legal challenges will come out, to be quietly withdrawn some time around Christmas. On January 20, 2021, Donald J. Trump will slink quietly out of a back exit of the White House, drive off, and within hours be arrested in the State of New York on charges of tax evasion and fraud.

He’s nuts. :)

I use a 35 watt Two Rock amp most of the time, and that one will hurt you if you lean on it too hard.

The closest I ever got to using that level of power was two 50w Marshalls with 1 4x12” cabinet each. And that was crazy loud.

If you’re going to follow the constitution you say applies, then none of the House members are in office. Likewise, 1/3 of the Senate. The Senate will change to Democratic hands, and whoever the senate majority leader is will become president.

There’s a whole chain if you’re going to apply the rules of the constitution.

We hope the Senate changes to Democratic control; still a 50-50 proposition.

A fair point, and I agree with what was said above.

re: #353 I Would Prefer Not To

Trump IS a coward. The only reason he felt safe walking out in Lafayette Square was because of the overwhelming display of force from his goon squad. I do not see any realistic scenario in which Trump refuses to leave. He might make noises and pretensions - and, let’s be fair, I’m basically batting an 0-fer where Trump is concerned - but between his own cowardice and the fact that even the people who service him most faithfully aren’t that stupid, come January, our national nightmare WILL be over as long as we do our part and actually vote the motherfucker out.

I always hated grammar, and sucked at sentence diagrams, though I am really fascinated from a machine learning point of view of how people hear and accept certain patterns of speech. Like I hear absolutely nothing wrong with ending your sentence with “me” because implying a verb seems complicated.

There’s really nothing wrong with finishing off a sentence with “than her” rather than “than she.” In English department offices, you generally hear people say on the phone “this is she/he” because we just know the rule that applies, but if you said “this is her/him,” we would only make fun of you if you had a D.Ed. from University of Phoenix, or something. Otherwise we’d assume you knew better but were just being colloquial.

In this particular dystopian nightmare, it would come down to the government employees physically closest to him: either the Secret Service or the Marines who guard the White House. There’s no reason to believe that he’s corrupted the Secret Service (yet). And we can only hope that the Marines assigned to that detail are of the highest moral code.

Yes, things are precarious, but the demonstrators are doing it because they believe things can be changed, it’s just taking more than “call your congressperson”. What’s the point of them if we’re going to go “oh, but he might do this”?

re: #330 Charles Johnson

Yes, that interview is very alarming.

i am by no means an expert

i read the article

in my amateur opinion he’s left a few steps out and got some facts wrong, so i dont put a lot of credence in his ‘concerns’.

yes. legislatures have the power to appoint electors. What state would “submit competing electoral certificates” and how? Not the way he imagines.

My understanding is the legislatures have that power to appoint electors in lieu of an election. They can’t invalidate an election that has legally taken place.

“If the 28 Republican-controlled legislatures already agreed that the governors may move forward with the elections, but that they are still going to invoke their constitutional right to choose electors, they would have to change state law in order to do so.”

multiple states. in collaboration. see here

further, if the election were truly ‘in dispute’ because congress couldnt agree on a vote count, trump couldnt just get a justice to swear him in and that’s that. (taking the oath doesnt ‘make’ you president). there’s already a procedure for that circumstance and we’d all know about it weeks before 1/20/21.

in any event at that point the president of the senate pro tempore would be next in line to be sworn in not the speaker of the house

because he’s made these several errors, im really not worried about his fantasies.

im not an expert.
i just dont see any of it.

voter suppression, registration shenanigans, vote-by-mail fights, other ratfucking? sure.

yes, trump won 2016 when virtually no one thought he would. even though mathematically he could. he wasnt brilliant. he got lucky. and there was a lot of complacency to go around.

2020 is not 2016 for hosts of reasons.

trump is not a magician. there are only so many moves.

there is no way for trump to successfully game the system. if he wants a second term he has to win the EC unambiguously. all these other thought exercises are either very unlikely or just plain impossible.

Haha yeah, you would prevail.. maybe I oughtta invest in one of these Fenders.

I’ve mentioned it before, but my amp is a Music Man RD-110-50. The 110 means one 10” speaker, and the 50? Well, you can guess. I’ve never been able to turn it past 4. That was in a rehearsal where the other guitar player was being unusually obnoxious with his volume on his Hiwatt. My amp doesn’t work well with my townhouse-share-walls lifestyle. I have to attenuate with pedal volume and/or guitar volume because it’s nearly impossible to get at a decent sound using the amp control.

re: #335 NO SMOCKING GUN!

There is an extra legal mechanism; Trump simply refuses to leave, and armed branches of the federal government back him up. Then we potentially have a civil war.

a literal coup? still more from electoral-vote.com

Obviously, coups happen, so this is not impossible. However, this approach would require buy-in from federal law enforcement and from the military. You will notice that nearly all successful coups involve military officers, or else civilian leaders who had seeded the upper ranks of the military with their close personal allies. Neither of these things is true of Trump, and our experience is that America’s soldiers take their oaths to defend the Constitution (not the President, take note) very, very seriously. And even if the President and a cabal of soldiers and law enforcement officers do try to seize extralegal power, then they will have a rebellion of tens of millions of people to put down.

And, by the way, can we really expect all of this from a president who is more than willing to talk a big talk, but is rarely willing to walk a big walk. When push comes to shove, doesn’t he nearly always back down? Can we really believe he has the spine to go full Augusto Pinochet or Idi Amin?

re: #345 Khal Wimpo (not drinking damn fish tank cleaner)

This is what gives me agita:

imagine, come January 20, that we don’t have a president.

Then we might have Nancy Pelosi and Trump both claiming to be the commander in chief. This is a world of hurt.

i’m saying that the experts are saying this cant happen.
not wont.
cant.

and again - its the president if the senate pro tempore. not the speaker of the house who is next.

Day seven since Trump said he would issue a proclamation declaring Antifa a terrorist organisation.

No proclamation.

There is one, extending the Stafford Act for relief and emergency assistance to state National Guards called up to assist in combating Covid-19.

States like mine are using the Guard to screen people going into hospitals and ensuring they are wearing masks, protecting hospitals and clinics, processing tests, that sort of thing.

It also extends orders for federal assistance through August 20 (meaning Guardsmen and women serving long enough will get their federal benefits).

After a couple pleasant decision-making meets with local Social Sec office, we have had no contact in the last 10 years or so. The process has been seamless. We get periodic Medicare statements in the mail and tax info yearly.
