Again, not going to worry about problems that don’t exist. Democrats have some tricks they can do if they have the House and the WH. It might get ugly, but keep in mind that just about all Red states are going to need funds/resources starting next year. The House will have the opportunity to play hardball like they have never done before.

in my amateur opinion he’s left a few steps out and got some facts wrong, so i dont put a lot of credence in his ‘concerns’.

yes. legislatures have the power to appoint electors. What state would “submit competing electoral certificates” and how? Not the way he imagines.

My understanding is the legislatures have that power to appoint electors in lieu of an election. They can’t invalidate an election that has legally taken place.

“If the 28 Republican-controlled legislatures already agreed that the governors may move forward with the elections, but that they are still going to invoke their constitutional right to choose electors, they would have to change state law in order to do so.”

further, if the election were truly ‘in dispute’ because congress couldnt agree on a vote count, trump couldnt just get a justice to swear him in and that’s that. (taking the oath doesnt ‘make’ you president). there’s already a procedure for that circumstance and we’d all know about it weeks before 1/20/21.

so i’m saying that the experts are saying this particular scenario cant happen.

there is no way for trump to successfully game the system. if he wants a second term he has to win the EC unambiguously. all these other thought exercises are either very unlikely or just plain impossible.

I was reading that during the 1918 epidemic they had a few massive outbreaks following parades - usually one’s that were sending soldiers off to Europe for the Great War.

Day seven since Trump said he would issue a proclamation declaring Antifa a terrorist organisation.

No proclamation.

There is one, extending the Stafford Act for relief and emergency assistance to state National Guards called up to assist in combating Covid-19.

States like mine are using the Guard to screen people going into hospitals and ensuring they are wearing masks, protecting hospitals and clinics, processing tests, that sort of thing.

It also extends orders for federal assistance through August 20 (meaning Guardsmen and women serving long enough will get their federal benefits).

I’m doing the same… looking at statewide polling. And just noticed Trump hasn’t led in Florida since early March. And he’s basically never led in Michigan. Virginia and Pennsylvania also look out of reach for him. Biden might actually have a chance to get over 300 EVs

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has asked the Australian embassy to investigate the assault on a Network Seven reporter and cameraman covering the US protests.

An Australian journalist and cameraman have been assaulted by US law enforcement in what press freedom advocates say is one of the latest cases of more than 100 targetted “attacks” on media during the widespread protests against police brutality.

During a 7News Australia live cross from outside the White House on Tuesday morning cameraman Tim Myers was physically hit by police even after journalist Amelia Brace shouted “media”.

The footage, broadcast on live on Sunrise, shows police in riot gear storming past before hitting the camera which then goes black. Both the reporter and the cameraman were located to the side of the main group of protesters and did not appear to be participating.

Economically, I think the PRC needs the rest of the world more than the rest of the world needs them. And the dirty secret about nuclear weapons is that there’s really no advantage to using them. If you use them as a first strike, you lose any allies you have. If you use them against a civilian population, you lose any allies you have. In either case, you gain plenty more enemies. Basically, the only time someone would use them would be a Hitler Bunker situation, where you know all is lost and you decide to take the world with you. The only real advantage of having nuclear weapons is that nations which tend to have them tend not to get invaded (which is the very rational reason for North Korea, India, and Pakistan developing them)

Hong Kong was taken at gunpoint from China by the British to be a trading enclave and military base, a bit like how Hawaii was annexed by the Americans during their Naval expansion westward into the Pacific at the turn of the Twentieth Century. The Chinese government regard Hong Kong as Chinese territory the same way the Americans regard Washington DC as part of the United States, and in the same way Hong Kong is totally dependent on mainland China for its water, food, electricity and everything else that keeps a highly urban enclave operational.

A free independent Hong Kong would still need ten thousand tonnes of food each day, similar amounts of drinking water, gigawatts of electricity, sewage processing etc. The benefits of Hong Kong as a world-facing trading port to the Chinese government is vastly reduced compared to how things were in 1997 when the agreement with the British government was made (it’s complicated, involving another area of China called the New Territories the British negotiated a 99-year lease on to feed and provide drinking water to Hong Kong ). Basically without the Chinese government routing trade and services through Hong Kong it would collapse financially and without the water, food and power supplied by China Hong Kong would rapidly turn into something akin to the Gaza Strip or worse.

One would think that more intelligent upper leadership in the Army would have the upcoming election on their minds. With this they might be looking at polls and the very likely chance of a President Biden cleaning house of anyone associated with leading a Fascist Military assault and potential murder of US citizens on American soil.

However if President Trump successfully holds onto the White House (presumably by any means necessary) watch out- the military will be used in full force as he sees fit from then on with the full backing of Trump-loyal states and their Legislatures.
