Gen. James Mattis Breaks Silence, Denounces Trump as Threat to Constitution

Politics • Views: 26,258

Like many people (I’m sure) I don’t really understand what took him so long, but Gen. James Mattis has broken his silence tonight to issue a dire warning about the Bunker Baby in the White House: James Mattis Denounces Trump as Threat to Constitution.

As for why he’s speaking out now, I think it boils down to this:

“When I joined the military, some 50 years ago,” he writes, “I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.”

Trump’s perverted use of the military Mattis served his entire life was clearly the final straw.

The complete statement is at The Atlantic.

Doomsday Scenario: Mid-October 2020. Trump, badly behind in the polls and clearly at risk of losing the election, decides to start a war/use nukes on a foreign country in a desperate attempt to boost his popularity and try to remain in the White House.

Honestly, I’m just not impressed that Mattis “broke his silence” when it was convenient to do so. Donny’s been trying to wield the DoD as his own private army for awhile now, has tried to start wars that would only get people killed for no discernible gain, and has been shortchanging our vets as he uses them for photo ops. That only now, when his popularity is cratering, does Mattis come out of the shadows to shake his finger.

The time to speak up was when he still had a job and thus had something to lose. Instead, he played politics right up til the day Donny fired him because he realized he wasn’t the General Ripper he desired.

There is absolutely nothing in Trump’s character or in the GOP that would serve to check this possibility. The only defense is institutional inertia in the senior military brass.

So, in a chat, I dropped the link, and the Reich wingers - of course - go.
No loyalty. Sad.
My response:
Oh, there is loyalty, just not to Bunker Bitch.
Let me give you a hint of what is at play here…
“I, , promise and affirm by my honor and by my conscience, that I am a trustworthy and faithful citizen of the realm of Finland. I want to serve my country honestly and, to my best ability, seek and pursue her edification and advantage. I want everywhere and in every situation, during peace and during war, defend the inviolability of my fatherland, her legal system of government and the legal authority of the realm. If I perceive or gain knowledge of activity to overthrow the legal authority or to subvert the system of government of the country, I want to report it to the authorities without delay. The troop to which I belong and my place in it I will not desert in any situation, but so long as I have strength in me, I will completely fulfill the task I have received. I promise to act properly and uprightly, obey my superiors, comply with the laws and decrees and keep the service secrets trusted in me. I want to be forthright and helpful to my fellow servicemen. Never will I due to kinship, friendship, envy, hatred or fear nor because of gifts or any other reason act contrary to my duty in service. If I be given a position of superiority, I want to be rightful to my subordinates, to take care of their well-being, acquire information on their wishes, to be their councilor and guide and, for my own self, set them a good and encouraging example. All this I want to fulfill according to my honor and my conscience.”

Just an idea, but responding to those who bemoan the lack of loyalty with the oath military and in the case of Finland, civilan total defence service members swear.

RISE UP

Rise Up, Rise Up
It’s time to take a stand
Rise Up, Rise Up
support your fellow man.

The road will not be easy,
the other side is out in force.
But ours is a crucial fight to win
and we’ve got to stay the course.

Rise Up, Rise Up
Take the protest to the street.
Rise Up, Rise Up
Clap your hands and stomp your feet.

We’ve got to make it clear today,
that justice will be served.
Fight the hate in the here and now,
so the future is preserved.

Rise Up, Rise Up
The movement needs your voice,
Rise Up, Rise Up
For those that didn’t have a choice.

Let the world see us, thousands strong
standing shoulder next to shoulder.
Lord, give us courage and give us wisdom
to be louder and be bolder.

And not the guy they were shooting at.

Another guy took a beanbag round to the forehead. Caved the front of his head in. His sinuses saved him, but he’s still pretty fucked up. The guy in the post took the round in his temple. Egg-shell shattered his skull. Even if he lives, he’ll be pretty much a veg for the rest of his life, say his doctors. Lotta bone splinters deep in his brain.

The beanbag rounds aren’t full of beans. They’re full of lead pellets, are as big as a man’s thumb, unstable, and leave the gun at +850 ft/second.

That’s what’s called a gambion - rock/stone filled metal cage. Chabad set it up to deter against car bombs and terror attacks involving someone attempting to drive into the Chabad.

Chabad agreed to allow LA to remove them - again opening them up to potential terror attack threat.

This is bugnuts insanity, and the GOP and Trumpworld doesn’t care how many lies they spew. Their base doesn’t give a shit.

I figured it was only a matter of time before the White House used that photo.

For the last couple days, liberals have been claiming it was a “cache of bricks” for agitators to use.

The same goes for all the other “piles of bricks” that liberals have been promoting, those photos will be used by reich-wingers as well.

There was a long takedown of a liberal making that claim about a pile of bricks in Charlotte, NC; a person weighed in saying leave the conspiracy theories to wingnuts, or the press can just magic balancefairy it. He then showed the city council notes and contracts that have been in for over a year approving construction in the very area shown, by the city.

RHR of 63? No fucking way. Men over 65 have a good resting heart rate if it’s in the 70-73 range. 63 is considered “great”. No way he is as close to “athlete” (55 at over 65 yo) as he is to “average”

It can also be slowing down. At his age, that’s not uncommon. If it goes down far enough, it needs a pacemaker.

re: #376 Barefoot Grin

I’ve mentioned it before, but my amp is a Music Man RD-110-50. The 110 means one 10” speaker, and the 50? Well, you can guess. I’ve never been able to turn it past 4. That was in a rehearsal where the other guitar player was being unusually obnoxious with his volume on his Hiwatt. My amp doesn’t work well with my townhouse-share-walls lifestyle. I have to attenuate with pedal volume and/or guitar volume because it’s nearly impossible to get at a decent sound using the amp control.

Have you tried an attenuator? I have a Weber Mini Mass. That way you can get the tubes a little riled up without blowing out the walls, while also keeping the guitar volume turned up so your pedals get hit with max volts. Most of my dirt pedals get a different tone depending on where the guitar’s volume knob is even when the SPL is about the same.
As for cabinet designations, I think you will appreciate how thrilled I was when the bass player in the band I was roadie-ing for acquired a 3620 cabinet.

Mattis saw this coming and did nothing.

Mattis was part of this admin and enabled Trump and did nothing to stop it.

Mattis was silent after letting thousands die in Puerto Rico because Trump is a white nationalist who doesn’t care how many nonwhite Americans die.

Mattis was silent even as 100,000 Americans died from covid19 and did nothing to mobilize the military’s elite medical units to help combat covid19, help with logistics of delivering ppe and ventilators to states in dire need, coordinate efforts among the states, and to help with testing.

Trump is a fucknut, and the GOP has enabled him for so long that even this half-measure doesn’t cut it.

Is this going to sway anyone? Really? The cult base aren’t going to be moved by any of this, but independents might - and that needs reinforcing.

Trump remains the clear and present danger to the nation - and everyone needs to see it.

His former officials see it. The only ones who don’t are his sycophantic suckups and bigot brigade base.

I have just started researching dedicated attenuators. Most of the ones I’ve checked so far have been out of my price range, but I’ll check it out. And yes, the thing my amp is known for is its chime on clean (I never use the solid state distortion channel—it’s crap) that works well with lots of pedals. Anyway, I’ll check out the Weber Mini Mass. At some point I think I’ll just opt to mothball it and get one of the new small amps with modeling.

A question and a comment:

How do you feel about Ampeg amps. The band I played in after high school had all Ampeg and I loved that sound. Stones were using them at the time and so were Faces. The band I moved onto in the mid 70’s had Marshall 50’s and the tall cabinets. Those were great too but much cleaner sounding in the hands of the guitarists in that band.

I received your masks today. Very nice! Just big enough for my fat head and beard. I like the metal stays at the nose. They’ll be great for runs to the store.

I’ll check those out. I was just super excited about the JHS $45 attenuator to only realize after reviews that it only works with newer amps that have FX loop, which my early 1980s amp lacks.

I’ll probably only ever play live once or twice again*, so I need to increasingly think about bedroom recording. But that’s in the future. I finally saved up enough to have my old non-reverse Gibson Firebird III upgraded. The guy won’t be done for two or three months, but it will be at least $600 for a guitar that probably isn’t worth it.

I have to say that’s freaking me out a little.

COVID19 is disbursed significantly more through singing. Some are wearing masks but that’s insufficient. Dr. Tam in Canada (basically our Fauci) said not to do this at protests; she wants hand signals. There are too many people too close together.

This all makes me so sad. A global phenomenon to stand side by side with all our brothers and sisters in a time where it might be the most detrimental.

Fuck trump.

Fuck the murderous police.

Fuck Republicans. Fuck the racists (but I repeat myself).

Kay-lie is doing her best propaganda spin. She’d make President Coin proud in Panem.

It’s all crime and lies all the way down in Trumpworld. The world is crashing around them, and they’re still deflecting/projecting their crimes on to everyone else.

Guess Mattis, Obama, and Carter statements stung just a wee bit inside the West Wing.

Trump is a fragile ego’d know nothing, and this is all he knows. So he’ll lash out at all of them thinking it’s the way to show he’s strong.

It’s just the opposite - it reinforces that he’s never been weaker. Sending out troops to protect him and firing on nonviolent protesters so he could do a photo op was only the latest of his awful decisions - and it’s costing him bigly.

It wont get better until his resignation is tendered along with everyone else associated with this regime. Election day is too far off and too much damage can be done by the Trumpists between now and then.

In case anyone missed it, and I doubt many people here did as on the whole you lot are pretty much up to speed with our deep societal issues, Trump is directly and obviously playing on the loss-of-God problem in America.

Even those black Americans Trump corrals into the WH are part of this crisis in faith. They are religious, hyper-religious, and they have to believe that Trump is Jesus’ guy.

The transition of Europe into a post-Christian world was not smooth (see WWI and WWII.)

It won’t be smooth here, either.

Because this failed admin not only has the blood of 107,000+ Americans on its hands from its failed covid19 response, but shredding the Constitution, rule of law, and their oaths by attacking peaceful protesters with teargas to go do a goddamned photo op and campaign ad (itself a crime).

When I first hooked up with that band, the bass player was using a Gallien-Krueger little solid state head. Don’t know if its a coincidence, but shortly after I started toting their amps, he got a big-ass Ampeg tube head. I liked the GK sound just fine, but the Ampeg just seemed to have a lot more, I don’t know, impact? Definitely had more impact on my back.

Back when I was playing bass, I played through an SVT. Besides the 8x10” cabinet, that monstrous head was enclosed in an Anvil flight case when it went in the truck. The head with case easily weighed 120 pounds. Luckily we had a road crew so I didn’t have to move it myself.

Yes, I remember the Ampeg amps being very heavy, but the next band I was in with the Marshall 50’s also carried a Hammond Model A with an original cabinet. We used piano moving lifts with handles but it still took four of us to carry it

At the very least we should not treat former officials as respected reservoirs of historical or political wisdom. No cushy university perches. No participation in panels of esteemed former officials. Private employers should be wary of hiring people of such low character. Yes, serving in an administration so corrupt, racist, dishonest and anti-democratic should deprive one of the benefits ex-officials of other administrations enjoy. (Don’t shed a tear on their behalf. I have never seen such a day of either crawfishin’, self justifyin’, or crawlin’ up Trump’s ass!

It’s remarkable.

A lot of folks in DC are getting real nervous. It’s beginning to sink in that the Rs are going to get their asses kicked in November and that Schumer is going to be the majority leader. All that sweet pretty polly is going to dry up and someone is going to have pay the debt.

Night all, as sweet a set of dreams as you can manage.

After Joe cleans Donny’s clock in November, it will be interesting to see how much of the never Trumper attitude was personal grievance versus a real opposition to Trump’s policies.

There are never Trumpers, such as Bill Kristol, who hated him because of his foreign policy; most of them would have been fine with his 2020 domestic policies (though not his handling of Covid 19).

Mattis: 3 years with a lack of mature leadership. That’s damning indictment of Mattis. He was there, and did nothing. The reality is that his failures to act to stop Trump years ago are coming back to destroy the nation now.

His silence and assent cost lives.

His silence and assent had deadly consequences is so many ways.

Shredding the constitution and the rule of law, and it took until now for him to see it.

He was there 2 years, not 3 years. And aren’t most senior military men reluctant to openly criticize civilian leadership?

I have to say that’s freaking me out a little.

COVID19 is disbursed significantly more through singing. Some are wearing masks but that’s insufficient. Dr. Tam in Canada (basically our Fauci) said not to do this at protests; she wants hand signals. There are too many people too close together.

This all makes me so sad. A global phenomenon to stand side by side with all our brothers and sisters in a time where it might be the most detrimental.

Fuck trump.

Fuck the murderous police.

Fuck Republicans. Fuck the racists (but I repeat myself).

Fuck this virus.

Fuck.

But since the protests are occurring outdoors, perhaps that might reduce the risk associated with singing. Let’s hope that this will not lead to an explosive growth of new cases.

Engineers at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. and Turkish domestic appliance company Beko trained a robot to make omelets via machine learning, refining its culinary skills to produce a consistently tasty dish. The machine learning method used Bayesian inference to extract the greatest amount of information possible from a limited number of data samples. To account for the subjectivity of human taste, Cambridge’s Fumiya Iida said, “We needed to tweak the machine learning algorithm—the so-called batch algorithm—so that human tasters could give information based on comparative evaluations, rather than sequential ones.” Added Iida, “The omelettes, in general, tasted great; much better than expected!”

The front of Guitar Center’s wesite has a Black Lives Matter banner that links to this statement:

Black Lives Matter

Over the last several days, many across the country have united to demand justice for the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and too many more. This pain has been felt deeply across the nation. We recognize that pain and we stand with the Black community in the fight against racism, injustice and inequality.

Our company values diversity and inclusion among our core values. While we strive to live those values, we recognize that we have much to learn and a long way to go on this journey. We are at a crossroads where we must come together and be persistent in our efforts to make meaningful change.

Therefore, it is our personal commitment that we, at the Guitar Center Company, will take actionable steps to do our part in supporting the Black community and embracing diversity and inclusion both in our company and our communities. We will not tolerate racism.

Through our joys and challenges, music is our strength, our solace, our expression. It is a powerful force for good and a voice for change. We will increase our efforts with the Black artist and music community to continue to build lasting relationships, garner feedback on how we can improve, and build music programs so that more aspiring Black musicians can realize their dreams.

We wholeheartedly believe we have a responsibility to those who are impacted daily by societal inequality and injustice. We don’t have all the answers but we are committed to listening and doing the work to get to a more just world. Film Streams has “A Time For Burning” (1967, Not Rated, nominated for an Academy Award at the time, by the Lutheran Film Association, run time 0:58:00) available free for streaming at the moment.

A Time for Burning is the story of one pastor’s unsuccessful efforts to integrate Omaha’s Augustana Lutheran Church in 1966. The movie’s central figure is Bill Youngdahl, the socially conscious white clergyman driving the church’s reforms, but its most compelling may be a young Ernie Chambers, then as now a fiery and uncompromising voice for North Omaha. Barbara Connell and Bill Jersey’s searing postcard from the front lines of the civil rights movement aired nationally on television and was nominated for the Best Documentary Picture Academy Award. Though not explicitly presented as a microcosm of the tensions gripping the country at large, A Time for Burning remains an indelible document of a time when things seemed set to burst.

Kleine now backs calling a grand jury to review James Scurlock’s death (Omaha World-Herald)

TL;DR, Douglas County Prosecutor Don Kleine has relented and will allow a grand jury and special prosecutor to be appointed, after the shooting death in Omaha of James Scurlock (a 22 year-old black man) by a white bar owner on Sunday. Kleine says he’s reviewed additional evidence to indicate Jake Gardner acted in self-defence. He announced on Sunday there would be no investigation.

A petition was launched in the city to force appointment of a grand jury, which would have taken about twenty thousand signatures.

“There have been a few things that have come in that actually, that probably (support) the nature of the decision that we made,” Kleine said. “Just enhanced or made that (decision) even more strong.”

That said, Kleine added: “I certainly believe in transparency and have no problem with any oversight about (our) decisions. … I welcome and support the calling of a grand jury to review evidence in this rare instance.”

Afterward, Scurlock’s father, James Scurlock II, thanked the community, especially black Omahans, for forcing the issue. And he thanked Kleine for listening.

Essentially in his opinion piece, Mr. Goldberg makes the claim since China is abhorrent on human rights, they have no place criticising the USA.

This is the same argument the Soviet Union and China used against the USA during Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement to argue about the USA criticising them.

Mr. Goldberg is not stupid; he knows this. Regardless of the human rights situation in China, that doesn’t relieve our own nation in improving ours.

Pentagon chief on shaky ground with White House after breaking with Trump over protest response (CNN)

Washington (CNN)Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is on shaky ground with the White House after saying Wednesday that he does not support using active duty troops to quell the large-scale protests across the United States triggered by the death of George Floyd and those forces should only be used in a law enforcement role as a last resort.

Speaking from the Pentagon briefing room podium, Esper noted that “we are not in one of those situations now,” distancing himself from President Donald Trump’s recent threat to deploy the military to enforce order.

“The option to use active duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act,” he told reporters. Esper also distanced himself from a maligned photo-op outside St. John’s Church.

Days later, regional officials finally acknowledge massive fuel spill in the Russian Arctic

Regional leaders from Russia’s Krasnoyarsk Krai were subject to a lecture from President Vladimir Putin for their slow response to a massive diesel spill at a combined heat and power plant (CHP) in the Arctic city of Norilsk.

The accident took place on May 29, at a plant belonging to the Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company. A reservoir sustained damage after one of its supports suddenly began to collapse, causing depressurization, which led to a fuel spill and a fire. A total of 20,000 tons of fuel spread into the soil in the surrounding area, spilling over into nearby rivers.

According to data from Russia’s regulatory agency for natural resources, Rosprirodnadzor, after the accident bodies of water more than 20 kilometers from the site contained concentrations of petroleum products that were tens of thousands of times higher than the maximum permissible limit.

In a bit of unsolved mysteries news, it looks like the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor’s Office in Germany is working with Scotland Yard in the belief that a German citizen, currently incarcerated as a sex offender, may have been responsible for the disappearance of Madeline McCann.

The suspect is unnamed for now, but is currently 43 years old, which would have made him ~30 at the time of her disappearance. Apparently, he had been looked into as part of Operation Grange, though it’s not stated whether he was officially questioned at that time. More information about the suspect didn’t emerge until 2017 and since then, extensive inquiries about him have been carried out, both in Portugal and Germany.

The NYT editors believe it is their job to “challenge” its liberal readers by printing any piece of right-wing drivel they can find. They also seem to think it is their job to determine a narrative for every story, which needs to incorporate the right wing drivel, so guess what the narrative looks like. The editors don’t feel the same need to “challenge” its right wing readers (or figure that grudgingly publishing the actual facts is challenge enough).

At some point, the NYT editors might point out that the First Amendment doesn’t mean that right wing members of the government get to say whatever they fucking want on any platform they fucking want without criticism. That’s actually the exact opposite of the First Amendment.

According to Electoral-Vote’s map, if the election were held today and the polls held, Biden would win 353-185. Biden is likely to pick up PA, WI, and MI this go around because Trump trails in all by up to double digits. I remember the debate over whether the SS or the NKVD was responsible for the mass graves in Katyn, Poland.

Although in the end, this is like two crackheads breaking into a house, murdering the family, and then arguing afterwards about which one of them strangled grandma…

The German people were really surprised to discover that Total War applied to them too, not just the mud people they slaughtered in their search for lebensraum. It’s a bit like the members of the “Leopards Eating People’s Faces” party discovering that retribution is a bitch.

In the end, because the Western powers needed Germans as the spearpoint forces for their next assault on Communism West Germany wasn’t thoroughly deNazified, disarmed and reduced to an agrarian economy which is what the Soviets wanted. The old men in the Kremlin (most of who had spent time literally on the front lines against Fascism) had to settle for maintaining a political and military stranglehold on East Germany which, thankfully was enough to stop a third World War breaking out.

There are never Trumpers, such as Bill Kristol, who hated him because of his foreign policy; most of them would have been fine with his 2020 domestic policies (though not his handling of Covid 19).

And I, for one, will never forget. They’re not friends, they’re not frenemies, they helped build this. They spent years demonizing Democrats. They’re coconspirators. They’re just as guilty.

During WW1 the average German citizen didn’t know much about what was happening on the Western Front, no bombs fell on German cities, there was no “Berlin Gun” bombarding German soil. “All Quiet on the Western Front” was a regular strapline for German newspapers when nothing much happened far from their quiet streets while the death and destruction continued in Belgium and France. For that reason the idea of the Dolchstosslegende was easy to propagate after the war — how did we lose, why did we surrender when we were so obviously winning? It must have been the Jews and Bolsheviks, we were stabbed in the back! Combine that with toothless enforcement of the Versailles Treaty throughout the 1930s and the result was over forty million Soviet dead, German forces on the outskirts of Moscow and concentration and extermination camps established in Poland and elsewhere to deal with ‘undesirables’.

After the Red Army treated the Germans to Total War: Berlin Boogaloo they sat down and shut up and obeyed their masters and they haven’t started another war since. I’ve seen it said that, between the time of the Roman Empire and 1945, the longest period between armies crossing the Rhine to fight wars was sixty years. After the Soviet destruction of the Nazis and the associated atrocities in German/Axis territories, bupkis.

Much the same happened in the early years of WWII, which was a large part of why Hitler remained popular to the German people and tolerable to the military. Before 1943, there simply wasn’t any real threat to Germany proper: The RAF and USAAF took time to build their numbers and get enough long-range fighters to stage regular raids, while the beginning of the Soviet counter-offensive at Stalingrad was years away. Meanwhile, the wealth of Germany’s conquests was flowing into her coffers and onto the plates of her citizens, such that the average Berliner’s view of the war was the propaganda outlets telling them about their inevitable victory.

There’s stories from German soldiers who survived the war who, when they’d go home from the front lines for leave or due to injuries, they’d be totally shocked by what they found back home. They were freezing in fox holes on the Eastern Front, forced to forage or hunt for food, and counting every bullet as though it might be their last, and then they’d get home and everybody acted as though the good times were never going to end. How could they be losing the war when there was meat on the table, cream and sugar in their coffee, and their wives had all the nylons they could afford?

Over a year. The official acknowledgement that the Battle of Stalingrad had been a major defeat and Goebbels calling for total war wasn’t until Feb ‘43, but Hitler wouldn’t allow him to actually start drawing men and materiel from the non-essential sectors of the German economy until July ‘44.

Trump’s treatment of the military is why I’m confident that even if he wants to throw a tantrum over November, it will be just that. I wish Mattis had spoken out earlier but better late than ever. I’m for anyone that will help defeat this asshole.

electoral-vote.com this am

For those who might like a silver lining, though, there is one here. Mattis’ letter, and Esper’s pushback for that matter, are excellent proof of concept of something we’ve said numerous times: If Trump tries to stay in office beyond the expiration of his term, there is no chance that the military establishment plays along. And without its backing, Trump would merely become the world’s highest-profile trespasser, right up until he became the highest-profile person in the world to be jailed for trespassing

re: #428 NO SMOCKING GUN!

An interesting question of alternative history is, if Operation Barbarossa had focused on the oil fields, giving Army Groups North and Center just enough strength to protect Army Group South’s flank and keep a large portion of the Red Army tied down around Moscow, could it have succeeded?

An even more interesting question - what if Rommel (and Dönitz) had successfully convinced Hitler of their strategy; namely, reinforce the Afrika Korps with another armored division, sent a Luftflotte for air cover, then cut across the Suez Canal, into Jordan and roll into Iraq (and maybe Iran….it’s been so long since I read about it, I’ve forgotten all the details) and capture the British oil supply. No need for a southern flank in Barbarossa; indeed, no reason to capture the Caucuses at all.

IIRC, Churchill noted that if Rommel had been given free rein to pursue his strategy, Britain’s position would’ve become instantly untenable. I believe his quote was, “We would have been forced to sue for peace.”

Right now, that would seem to be their best strategy: make sure that the results are easily challenged and questioned, point out evidence of irregularities and tampering in all the key states, and refuse to budge until this has all been thoroughly “investigated” by Bill Barr…

Not sure if this was posted last night but:

NYT in disarray!!

Staff members at the New York Times are publicly rebuking their newspaper for publishing an opinion piece by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) that called for military intervention into American cities where protests over George Floyd’s death have led to further unrest.

The swift backlash, which spilled out on Twitter, came from dozens across the organization and included opinion writers, reporters, editors and magazine staffers. Several tweeted the same message — “Running this puts Black @nytimes staffers in danger” — with an image of the editorial’s headline, “Tom Cotton: Send In The Troops.”

Glad that the NYT is getting even more pushback. It was a horrible and stupid decision to run that opinion.

re: #396 Nojay UK

Wasn’t the underlying problem the fact that the Versailles Treaty contained harsh punitive measures that severely and irreparably damaged the German economy during the 1920’s? With more moderate provisions, there would likely have been no Hitler regime in the first place.

Johnson is an interesting character. He has to personally know trump from his wrestling time. It’s he specifically talking to trump? Is that an effective tone if he is?

Should he be more impassioned would he come off as an angry black man or a caraciature of his prior wrestling persona?

I read a book Dark Continent: Europe’s Twentieth Century by Mark Mazower, a professor at Columbia, that pointed out that most of the continent had succumbed to authoritarian rule of one form or another, Versailles Treaty or no.

I marveled that people would give up their freedom so readily. And then I saw Trump.

Trump was only involved with WWE very briefly and never in any storylines involving Johnson. If they met, Trump probably doesn’t even remember it.

I think you hit the nail on the head where he didn’t want to come off as too energetic or passionate because people would assume he was “just acting” or “just doing a wrestling promo” and not being serious about things.

There are folks who still think Trump is reachable, maybe Johnson is one of them.

re: #466 Hecuba’s daughter

Every European nation’s economy, not just Germany’s was in the toilet after an all-out war that diverted wealth, production and manpower into blowing stuff up for four years. The Versailles Treaty was meant to prevent the Germans (who were clearly the aggressors) from doing it again. The financial penalties in the treaty were an artefact of history — the victorious Prussians demanded and got five billion gold marks from the defeated French after the war in 1871, this was the exact same sum in reparations demanded from the Germans in the Versailles Treaty although that sum was never actually fully paid. Going even further back five billion gold marks was what Napoleon demanded from the Prussians after they were defeated back in 1805.

In the end the US, looking for financial advantages in Europe, made loans to the Weimar and later Nazi government to fund German development and industrialisation in the early 1930s. Those funds were diverted into militarisation and weapons production, something else the Versailles Treaty was supposed to prevent — for example there was a ban on German military forces in the Rhineland abutting France and Belgium, the two greatest victims of the German war machine in WW1 but by the time the Wehrmacht marched into the Rhineland in 1936 the Treaty was a dead letter and another war was inevitable.

The Treaty was standard operating procedure for European wars — the loser paid the price for losing, to the winner went the spoils but the leaders of both sides remained in power. The next war though, the Soviets weren’t so tender-hearted when they took Berlin, they were after blood not reparations.

Greets and saluts from the humid NYC metro area. As is customary, fuck Trump, fuck the GOP, and fuck the enabling media. They’re flinging all manner of bulkshit hoping some of it sticks so that Trump gets reelected despite the neverending shitshow of failure, incompetence, malevolence, and criminal conduct.

Protests continue nationwide, and there continue to be police involved shootings, excessive force at protests all around the nation. There’s been a bunch of attacks on cops too - particularly in NYC. Three NYPD officers have either been stabbed or shot at by persons, and that only adds to the ratcheting up of tensions.

Not only is Trump a fuckup, but we’ve got a fucked up dynamic between police, prosecutors, politicians, and the communities they’re all supposed to be serving. Everyone wants to wear mantle of law and order, but politicians are wary of holding cops accountable for their crimes - they get targeted by right wingers, cops, and prosecutors for being pro-criminal, anti-cop, instead of being law and order.

Cops and their unions are even less willing to be held accountable when their own break the law.

This has to change.

We’re seeing that change begin, and it’s something to behold - in places like Newark NJ police are working with the community to not only keep protests peaceful, but to work with the communities to address their concerns. Ferguson just elected the first African American woman mayor - a double historic event - it’s the first woman and first African American to ever hold office in that city.

But electing politicians that want to change policing and fight institutional racism is just the start. You have to get buy-in from law enforcement and prosecutors, and that’s a much harder nut to break mostly because the law protects cops from consequences of their actions (qualified immunity), and union contracts that make it all but impossible to fire bad cops, and a wall of silence that protects bad cops. That’s critical to dealing with all of this going forward, and none of it is easy when you have a normal functioning government. It’s even harder when you have a lawless WH occupant willing to send in the military to break skulls, giving cops the green light to do same knowing they are buoyed by Trump’s words.

The GOP must be defeated in November - utterly and completely, and the ongoing protests show just how. It shows how weak Trump truly is, how he doesn’t get what’s going on, and that his failures are magnified by the fact that he’s building a prison for himself. The WH belongs to all Americans, not him - and shutting down streets and putting up fencing so he can’t see protests is anti-American. He can’t take the criticism. His fragile ego can’t take the sustained beatings. Fuck ‘em. And fuck all the enabling GOPers who are pushing for fascist solutions. And fuck the Times for elevating fascist solutions - we know where the Times editorial staff stands, and it’s not on the side that protects Americans.

Probably not large enough to host a convention involving 15-20000 people. Branson’s convention center can hold at max 4,000 people.

You need a NBA sized arena for a convention, so that means D1 basketball team arenas are in play in many parts of the country, plus actual NBA arenas. Outdoor stadiums are not likely due to the possibility of weather during the convention.

That necessarily limits the locations that could potentially host, as well as flights to/from (you want someplace that has a lot of direct flights from major cities/hubs).

Yes and no. I think the story is that there was a 14th(?)-Century Pope John XXIII, but he had got on the Throne of Peter in some irregular manner (probably, in those days, by force; or bribery - or possibly both), and was later struck off the books as an “antipope”. When Angelo Roncalli became Pope in 1958, he took the name “John XXIII” as being the proper numbering.

Fun Fact: There never was a “Pope John XX”. Medieval church historians cleaning up the rolls of the pontiffs mistakenly counted one Pope (John XIV, I think) twice.

Correct. Headlines are different than content. Some of what I used as headers got kept when I was in college but I had it changed too. A lot of what troubles me about modern journalistic practices is clicks matter more than the story himself. It’s why our social media accounts get filled with people who post ten articles a day but I doubt actually read the stories.

Whom both the Avignon and Roman Popes ignored. Until some more warfare settled the issue.

and here is graham:

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) pushed back on former Defense Secretary James Mattis’s criticism of President Trump over the handling of nationwide protests against police brutality, The Hill reports.

Said Graham: “I think you’re missing something here my friend. You’re missing the fact that the liberal media has taken every event in the last three and half years and laid it at the president’s feet. I’m not saying he’s blameless, but I am saying that you’re buying into a narrative that I think is quite frankly unfair.”

its still an insane defense

how would they have known?

and even if he had some ‘mental illness’ how does ‘i’ll stop him with a shotgun” fit in?

Insane, but considering how often the whole superhuman attribution is given to Black Males to justify violence against them, under the defense of ‘I feared for my life’, and how often that’s worked in getting cops off the hook, it’s a effective defense.

The Republican National Committee is planning site visits over the next 10 days to more than a half-dozen cities — across the South and into Texas and Arizona — as it scrambles for a new convention host,” Axios reports.

“The cities under consideration include Jacksonville, Phoenix, Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta and possibly New Orleans and Savannah.”

I suspect it’s an old video since no one is wearing a mask. But Joe hasn’t changed.

I was on an other site watching a short clip of police in Lincoln NE dancing with protesters and briefly thought “is this from the current protests?” Then I realized everyone was wearing a mask and was like yeah it’s current. That’s going to be helpful in sorting through stuff that gets posted on social media.

No, no, of course they’re going to imply that Arbery just snapped out of nowhere and that he just HAD to be put down, like some wild animal. Because that’s all they basically see black bodies as: wild animals to be put down.

they hunted him

…outlined the events that led to Arbery’s death and told the court that before Arbery was shot, the three men charged in his murder engaged in an elaborate chase, hitting the 25-year-old jogger with a truck as he repeatedly tried to avoid them.

Even a relatively small convention takes time to plan - a former colleague of mine is one of the founders of Fantastic Ostrava, a sci-fi/fantasy-themed convention that takes place every year.

It takes her and others several months to get everything lined up. As she told me, booking the convention hall where they have it is the easiest thing to do.

Abso-friggin’-lutely. One of the big flaws with this year’s Dem primary race was (IMO) the obsession with personalities (and the BernieBro cult, but I digress), and the pigeonholing of ideological issue-flogging.There was a studied ignoring of political process and partisan structure in how the governing of this country actually operates. By everybody but Joe Biden, who has spent his life studying and operating within those structures. A huge flaw and drawback for the “revolutionaries”, who can only see “politics as usual” and tend to fall - in mirror-image of the Trumpsters- into Great Man idealizations; but (as it has turned out) what I hope will be a tremendous asset in managing post-Trump America.
Will a President Joe Biden fight hammer-and-tongs for a left-wing agenda? Probably certainly not. Will a President Biden stand in the way of (discourage/obstruct/veto) any progressive legislation a D Congress might send him? Probably not, either: and the latter
- the way things are supposed to work in the US - is probably about as best as we are going to able to do.
Still a VAST improvement over the Incompetence Fascism of Trump and the GOP.

It is much more interesting. I’m also not surprised that farmers as business owners make more than the median worker. That’s pretty much the way it goes in any industry. Partners at big firms make more than their associates, partners at small firms make more than their associates (and often times, more than the associates at big firms).

The history of how the land and wealth were acquired is despicable, to say the least. The question is, how do we change things for the better? I’m not sure “creating a whole bunch of much smaller farmers” is necessarily the best answer - could we even treat farmers as monopolies? And if we did,how would we break them up?
