Civil Action report from NYC (only about 10 minutes old); The usual pre-curfew march up my street (Park Ave So) this evening as I was coming back with takeout: a LOT bigger than in recent evenings - I’d say at least 2000 people: mainly young, all masked (for safety, not anarchy!): when they halted, both sides of the Ave were filled for 5 blocks (not much social distancing, though!). Completely peaceful. Well, except for the cops who all had their batons out: but looked bored. Better than “not bored”, I suppose.

I do not know how many but I do know they would have gone berserk over that thought. I do remember when HRC had meetings on health care and there was quite a fuss made over those meetings.

If Trump was supposed to chair and couldn’t, why isn’t Pence or, you know, the FEMA director take his place. Trump’s probably afraid of anyone looking more presidential than he is right now. So, Melania it is.

My evil too big to fail employer sent out an email last night and also converted our internal home page into a request to “[P]lease observe 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence today to reflect on events of the last week and acknowledgevthe movement for justice and equality in our communities.” They specifically asked if we had the opportunity, to have the moment of silence right before the beginning of the memorial service for George Floyd. The accompanying information specifically referenced Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

This. It is literally an editor’s job to know exactly what is going into their paper - to the point that the stereotypical editor (as portrayed on TV, etc.) winds up proofreading their columnists. That’s the level of detail the really anal ones go to.

Same deal with Esper. He didn’t know what Trump was doing when they were going to the church and clearing the park, or he knew that they were clearing the park for a photo op.

Either way, he should resign/be fired.

But we know how this works. They just wont give a shit, and Trumpists got what they wanted with Cotton’s fascist flopsweat getting widespread dissemination. That was the point.

Added:

This is editorial malpractice and a firing offense. At any lesser paper, Bennet would be gone. But with the Times, they’ll let this go, just as they have with racists like Stephens continuing to spew toxic crap on the editorial page.

Got an email from my big boss as well. It was extremely bland, but it was at least unequivocal in calling for an “elimination of injustice and racism”, which had that going for it. I appreciate that corporate statements on justice and equality are difficult, but come on, if corporations are people…

Mechanical machine guns have always been exempt. The glock magazine requirement is the real limit on it for a maximum of 30 rounds at a time. A pistol or carbine would be more dangerous than this expensive toy.

It’s not just big police departments. It’s not just a few bad apples. Every state has problem departments that run roughshod over civil rights of the people they swore to protect.

This begs for state or federal oversight and federal monitors at a minimum. It should require a complete house cleaning and new training.

But watch the cops fight this tooth and nail. They’ll attack the whistleblowers and refuse to improve policing.

I had my kids read about the Tulsa Riots, history.com. Part of the article is this:

The false belief that a large-scale insurrection among black Tulsans was underway, including reinforcements from nearby towns and cities with large African-American populations, fueled the growing hysteria.

As dawn broke on June 1, thousands of white citizens poured into the Greenwood District, looting and burning homes and businesses over an area of 35 city blocks. Firefighters who arrived to help put out fires later testified that rioters had threatened them with guns and forced them to leave.

Since then, I have been showing him things like the text above that are similar.

As other might be vaguely aware, I am a wrestling fan. One of my favorite acts has been The New Day, mostly because they have the freedom to be their own thing, and they are unabashedly nerds atop of everything else. That includes Xavier Woods, who runs his own gaming Youtube channel that is semi-connected to other WWE projects, and regularly makes appearances in other gaming media or events.

He was brought on to a Twitch stream for an event in the game Valorant, and before the games started, he was asked to comment on the current situation with the protests. He posted the relevant clip from that stream on his Youtube channel and…well, just listen.

According to electoral-vote.com, BIden is within one point of Trump in Texas, two in Iowa, three in Utah (which hasn’t gone blue since 1964), three in NC, and four in Missouri.

Yes, it’s only June, and polling is still very light nationwide, but if Biden flips all of those states, in addition to Arizona and George (where EV shows him having slight leads), and retaking the states Clinton lost in ‘16, he will have 427 electoral votes.

That is one more than George HW Bush won in 1988 over Dukakis.

I dunno: still WAY too early in the game for these polls to have much meaning, BUT; I think IA and NC are very possible pickups for Joe (and Dems in general) - TX, UT and MO are lost causes, IMO; (though GA is not) - but if it causes the Repubs to have to spend a bundle to retain them, no biggie… But then again, money, per se, NEVER seems to be a problem for Republicans,,,,,

I keep hearing, even Bob Cesca mentions this in the podcast today, that George Floyd had COVID-19 on top of everything else.

Ummm… He tested positive on April 5th I think, and was killed on May 25th.

If that is the case then he either *HAD* COVID. Past tense. or he had a false positive. 7-8 weeks later after a positive test he’d either be over it or would be dying in the hospital on a ventilator. This is a fucking non-issue and we shouldn’t even be discussing it in regards to what happened.

Breaking: NYS Judge James Burke rules NYPD can now keep anyone (peaceful protestors arrested for curfew and criminal looters) detained for over 24 hours given these are extraordinary times. “It’s a crisis within a crisis”, he said. “All writs are denied, BK, BX and manhattan”

this is how they punish you without trial. If you want a trial, you have to wait another 24 to get in front of a judge. I’ve been through the system in NYC. It’s a fucking factory for punishing people who have not been convicted and in most cases will have their charges dropped for lack of evidence. It makes me want to scream. I’m not going out, but If I did get caught I would be in for days after a gave my two cents to everyone in the court system. Such a waste of resources.

Saw this in Mother Jones:

White House Security Blocks Washington’s Episcopalian Bishop from Holding a Vigil at Her Church

On Wednesday, Trump-authorized federal police closed off a portion of 16th Street just north of the church, about a block from the White House, which kept clergy from being able to use their house of worship.

Bishop Mariann Budde, who had assailed Trump’s Monday visit as a “symbolic misuse of the most sacred texts of our tradition,” planned to hold a vigil in front of the church to show solidarity with protesters. But a new security perimeter, extending almost a quarter of a mile out from the front of the White House, blocked her access and forced her into the street.

So besides assaulting one of the Episcopal Church’s priests, Trump is effectively confiscating church property — usurping it for his own use but denying them usage.

Google “LAPD RAMPART DIVISION SCANDAL” and see how a gang of racist cops framed hundreds of innocent people of color by planting drugs on them.

This is what I don’t understand. Yes, I’m a rich white male, so I am afforded the luxury of peaceable interactions with police. But in those interactions, they seem like they are compassionate people who have souls. However, when I see those same officers interacting with people not of my race or gender, they are hard and aggressive, and it makes no sense to me. Aren’t we all people? Aren’t we all Americans? What’s so different that you have to be an asshole to Those People but you treat me with more respect than I probably deserve?

The math feels inevitable. I don’t think these numbers are hyperbolic. Half of us (say 150 million) get exposed in the next year or so. 1% maybe a bit less of that die from it. Call it 1.2 million. Then we get natural “herd” immunity.

Yeah. There was apparently a question to my client’s CEO about, “Hey, why do formerly positive employees still have to wear masks? So, this is me. I’ve been literally isolated for nearly three full months. The few interactions I have had, have all been with the same people. It’s relatively safe to say I’ve probably never had it. I wear a mask, not because I think I’m a risk to other people, but out of respect to others who might think me irresponsible if I don’t, and to set an example for people like my younger friends, who are reckless because they feel young and indestructible.

I’m about to resume watching The Man in the High Castle. What a stunning realization of a world that might well have existed. One thing that stands out is how natural and convincing even small details are. The scenes in Denver in the Neutral Zone remind me of my childhood in Colorado Springs in the late 50s, including things I hadn’t thought of in 50 years, like the shape of the street lights or the neon signs on every business street. It is also alarming to see how naturally J. Edgar Hoover managed to fit himself into the Nazi regime. You see him at John Smith’s side and think, “Well, of course,” then “Oh shit!”

Estimates are that it will take between 70-90% exposure or vaccination to reach herd immunity. That means 229 million people have to be exposed AT THE LOW END. Even if “only” 1% die, 2.29M people die. That’s not small. That’s not acceptable.

It sucks being this way. What we should be doing is figuring out how to take care of each other, and preparing for shutdowns like now. But deciding we’re just going to ride out the pain of a few million people dying. Nope.

Iran appears to be a very troubling example of what could happen — their new case count was headed down, had in fact dropped about 75%, and now it is skyrocketing, to the highest level of the pandemic there. Maybe this is just due to more testing? Deaths have not yet reflected a significant change, but there would be a lag in this curve. I don’t know enough about the policies they adopted to stop the spread, but whatever they were, they don’t seem to be working any longer.

GI police investigating suspects who sprayed liquid at Sunday protesters (Goes to KSNB Channel 4 in Grand Island, Nebr.)

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) Police are investigating a Sunday night incident in which protesters in Grand Island were sprayed with a liquid from a pressurized toy water gun.

This still image was pulled from a video which showed protesters sprayed with liquid from a toy water gun used by a passenger in a car driving by.

Video of the incident obtained by Local4 shows a teenager spraying protesters while riding in a car driving by the street. Protesters who were hit say it smelled like vinegar, but in the video that was posted to the boy’s Snapchat he repeatedly said it was mixed with urine.

The incident happened Sunday night during a Black Lives Matter protest march from a Grand Island park to a parking lot on South Locust Street.

“It was just really disrespectful and that kid thought it was a joke and it was a prank and it’s not,” Jasmine Tapia, a protester who was hit with the liquid, said. “What we are fighting for is not a prank and not something to be messed with.”

The police are determining what liquid was sprayed at protestors. Two teenagers are involved and identified. If the liquid was vinegar, they will be charged with misdemenaour assault.

If the liquid includes urine as claimed in the video, they will be charged with felony assault.

Shots fired outside Colorado Capitol on Thursday afternoon (Denver Post)

At least one gunman fired several shots outside the state Capitol on Thursday afternoon, prompting a brief lockdown and shutting down traffic as Denver police secured the scene. Police said no injuries were reported.

Police closed Colfax Avenue from Lincoln to Grant streets, and there were several officers and squad cars at the scene. Police spokesman Jay Casillas said authorities didn’t know yet if there were one or multiple shooters. No one was in custody.

“Should there be any threat to the public, we will make proper notification to residents,” police said in a tweet.

Lobbyist Mike Beasley had just left the Capitol and was at the corner of East 16th Avenue and Sherman Street when the shooting started. A car, driven by a woman, was parked in the middle of the intersection at Sherman and Colfax and a man was shooting toward at least three young adults who were running southwest over the hill on the Capitol’s lawn, he said.

re: #210 DodgerFan1988

The drive to label everything “antifa” should probably be seen as a parallel to the existing trend of calling everything “socialist”:

They’re tarring the position that will resist them doing whatever they want.

They have to destroy the meaning of the word, so that when “socialism” and “antifa” are demonstrated to be valid positions, the concepts have in social parlance simply come to mean “taboo bad thing, can’t hear it.”

It’s a confession of what they’re planning next.

What is Antifa? Were is it located? Who is in charge? If it is distributed, like Isis, or Al-Queda cells, why can’t we find them?

Is our Deep State that incapable?

It’s a puzzlement, isn’t it?

Maybe it’s just a group of loosely organized kids who want to get an opportunity to bash white supremicist assholes in the ear when they are giving interviews spewing hate. That’s really the only thing I’ve seen them done on camera. Most of the rest of it seems to be related to Social Justice and, you know, opposing fascism.

I’ve never seem them yell “I’m Antifa, and I’m robbing this jewelry store/bodega/electronics/camera/department store for the masses!”

There are ARE people who are robbing jewelry stores/bodegas/electronics/camera/ and department stores, but these are people who do it for a living. We call them “thieves”. They are opportunists taking advantage in the chaos.

Maybe LEOs should concentrate on them instead of beating the shit out of non-violent people who are carrying BLM signs. Seems like it would do a lot to decrease actual property crime.

Night all, fearing for my Democracy, and at this point, fuck my life. New cases exploding across Texas.

I have got to make a Home Depot run tomorrow (an unfortunate plumbing leak and a dire need for a shade for the front of the house because of new construction to the immediate west), and a food run to the HEB. We’ve done pretty well here in the People’s Republic of Travis County, but a lot of the other counties in this State are just “Let ‘er rip!”

A few very late thoughts to the World War 1 discussion of a couple of threads ago.

(Sorry, I just caught up. I had a bunch of yardwork and shopping to catch up on. Interestingly - Costco [Leesburg Va store] had quart bottles of ‘Moxe’ hand sanitizer. They have never before carried hand sanitizer that I have ever seen in 30 years. No yeast though. However yeast was back in the online store earlier today.)

The historian Vejas Llulevicius has pointed out that World War 1 had tremendous effects on th world. Not so much directly for Britain, France and the United States. What it oversaw was the ending of the four last hereditary empires in Europe: Imperial Germany, The Austro-Hungarian Empire, The Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Obviously, the collapse of these four governments had far reaching effects through the 20th and into the 21st Century.

I haven’t seen anything yet about who exactly authorised requesting the National Guard.

DC has its own Guard. The DC Guard reports directly to the President, unlike the other three territories and fifty states.

Since they were not federalised for this action, state governors had to authorise sending them, but someone had to request them first.

I see. Well, not that it really matters, for there to be a 3A case here, the owners of all the hotels where NG troops are renting rooms (paying the gov’t rate, of course) would have to file with the courts that those troops are there without their consent. Considering the word that one or more of those hotels were closed due to the CV-19 outbreak, odds are the owners are not going to go along with kicking those troops out.

Basically what I’m saying is the only way these troops are being “evicted” is if the hotels decided to kick them out. Mayor Bowser can’t order them to kick those troops out, and I doubt hotel owners would keep quiet if she tried to force their hand through threats of litigation/permits/etc.

Sen. Mike Lee is basically lying about it. (Checks party: GOP, got it.)

Mayor Bowser wants out-of-state Guard out of her city, but that’s a far cry from ordering them out of hotels.

Not entirely.

The Third Amendment was incorporated as a response to the British Quartering Act of 1765, which required the colonies to quarter troops in alehouses, inns, hotels, or livery stables if there was insufficient barracks space.

Under the original interpretation of the amendment, if whoever is in charge of Utah’s National Guard in DC is making DC pay to put up troops in DC hotels, that would be a violation of the Third Amendment.

That said, there doesn’t appear to be an issue with Mayor Bowser and hotels; her complaint is troops from other states on DC soil.

A similar case might be the Nebraska National Guard going in uniform and under arms and camping in hotels in South Dakota without permission of the South Dakota governor. The South Dakota governor would be within her rights to tell our Guard troops to get out of her state.

I’m trying to suss all this out, because from what I’m reading her office says she only requested help from the DCNG (who she has authority over), while the NG troops from other states are there at the federal government’s request. If that’s the case, then I’m not sure she has the legal authority to order those troops out of DC, as would a SD’s governor demanding NE to remove their troops. She can demand they be removed, but the governors so far seem to be of the opinion that she’s grandstanding.

From what I understand, no one really knows who gave the orders for the Guard to go to DC. State governors would have to approve a request, or the federal government federaliZe them (in which case there should be a public order and someone in charge). That’s what the Mayor is trying to get to the bottom of, and if this information is intentionally hard-to-get, it at least appears that it wasn’t legal.

Yeah, that’s the general theme of the stories I’m seeing, which is also the same deal with all the riot cops and such that the DOJ bused in. The DoD and DOJ are operating in an opaque fashion for what appears to be plausible deniability, trying to avoid legal troubles by making it impossible for people to know who they’re supposed to bring suit against.

The document, which isn’t classified, shows 2,950 law enforcement personnel from U.S. agencies working alongside 2,935 National Guard troops, bolstered by 1,704 active-duty troops who are currently stationed outside the capital at Andrews Air Force Base, Fort Belvoir and Fort Myer.

….

The total deployments include 500 personnel each from the U.S. Capitol Police, Washington Police Department and U.S. Secret Service; 445 Bureau of Prisons staff, 168 members of the U.S. Marshals Service, 160 Drug Enforcement Agency employees, 80 U.S. Park Police and 32 FBI agents.

Some good news in these bleak times.

President Donald Trump’s favorability rating among white Catholics has dropped by more than 20 points in the space of two months, according to new polling data.

The latest survey from the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and SSRS found that 37 percent of white Catholics had a favorable view of Trump at the end of May.

When the same poll was conducted in March, the president had a 60 percent favorability rating among the demographic—putting him 23 points higher than his position today.

Over the whole of last year, Trump’s favorability ranking among white Catholics was 49 percent, or 12 points higher than his ranking last month.

As the coronavirus death toll topped the 100,000 mark and nationwide protests against the killing of George Floyd kicked off, the commander-in-chief’s favorability rating among white evangelical Protestants also fell.

White Catholics and white evangelical Protestants are key demographics for Trump and the GOP. Without those two groups, Trump and the GOP’s electoral chances this November are vastly diminished.

If he didn’t fucking read it, he should be fired or resign.

That’s kind of what a fucking EDITOR is supposed to do. I remember the editors I worked under when I was in journalism and they were fucking METICULOUS about reading every story and opinion piece that went into their paper.

“Pinch” Sulzberger thoughts on this:

The publisher, A.G. Sulzberger, said he understood why some staffers felt the newspaper’s work had been “overshadowed by the disappointment and hurt felt” over Cotton’s opinion piece.

“I’ve already heard from many of you and will do more listening in the days ahead, starting with smaller groups of our black colleagues, who are covering this story and living it at the same time,” Sulzberger wrote.

In his note, Sulzberger wrote, “The Op-Ed page exists to offer views from across the spectrum, with a special focus on those that challenge the positions taken by our Editorial Board.”

Sulzberger said that The Times doesn’t “publish just any argument,” and that opinion pieces need to be “accurate, good faith explorations of the issues of the day.”

“It is clear many believe this piece fell outside of the realm of acceptability, representing dangerous commentary in an explosive moment that should not have found a home in The Times, even as a counterpoint to our own institutional view,” Sulzberger wrote.

Sulzberger added, “I believe in the principle of openness to a range of opinions, even those we may disagree with, and this piece was published in that spirit.”

That’s an M-134 7.62 minigun, a common chopper weapon then and now. It was indeed a Gatling gun, though power-driven. The famous AC-47 gunship aircraft used 3 of them firing from the left side, with the pilot aiming by banking the aircraft. Miniguns fire up to 6000 rounds per minute, though 2400 or 3600 were more common settings. There are many other modern variations of the Gatling gun, including the fearsome 30mm GAU-8 that the A-10 uses to destroy tanks, and the 20mm Vulcan that is the standard fighter weapon.

Mechanical machine guns have always been exempt. The glock magazine requirement is the real limit on it for a maximum of 30 rounds at a time. A pistol or carbine would be more dangerous than this expensive toy.

I would kind of like a grease gun, just because I imagine for home defense, you would definitely capture a bad guy’s attention. actually, I’d never buy a gun for home defense.

Now we know why this failed Neanderthal cosplayer had a bow rather than a gun: He is a multiply convicted felon.
Man who drew bow and arrow on Salt Lake City protesters is in jail, charged with three felonies

Brandon E. McCormick has said he showed up at Saturday’s downtown protest, armed with a bow and arrow, to protect police from unruly demonstrators.

Now the 57-year-old Taylorsville man, who has spent nearly two decades of his life behind bars in California and once was convicted of battery against a public safety officer, faces three felony counts for, widely shared video has shown, aiming his weapon at protesters.

All three counts are Utah’s lowest grade of felony. Each is punishable by up to five years in prison. McCormick was also charged with a misdemeanor count of threatening or using a weapon in a fight. That count carries up to a year in jail.

Brandon looking somewhat the worse for wear after his apprehension by young citizens armed with skateboards.

Nope.

it’s possible the mortality rate is much lower than that. It might still end up being 400,000, which is a huge figure. Or, if we just lose control, then yes, we could lose a couple million, partly just because people having heart attacks can’t get EMS in time.

What
The
Fudge???

We should have more on this shortly. But it seems we have another case where anti-Antifa hysteria led members of one community in Washington state to go full feral and create a harrowing Deliverance type situation for a multi-racial family from Spokane who was looking to go camping. While stopping off to purchase camping supplies at Forks Outfitters in Forks, Washington, the family was confronted by “seven or eight carloads” of people demanding to know if they were with Antifa. This appears to have been in response to widespread rumors fanned in right wing media that “antifa” was sending formations into suburbs to loot subdivisions and rural homes. After the family decided to flee, they were then pursued by two of the vehicles with passengers apparently carrying automatic weapons. Camping that night the family heard gunfire and power saws down the road from there campsite and decided to leave only to find that self-styled anti-Antifa warriors had trapped them by cutting down trees to block the road. A group of high schoolers rescued the family by clearing the trees and the local Sheriffs department is now investment.

Pandemics are unprecedented events, and the depth of the collapse misses lots of jobs, and even this figure is questionable based on the data provided.

Wolfers got it - this isn’t so much jobs recovered as adjusting the downward spiral so it is marginally better than the historically awful figures (which are still historically awful).

There’s a reason the CBO warns it’ll take a decade for the economy to recover.

Millions of businesses will not recover from this. That’s millions of jobs that aren’t coming back, even with a stimulus package (or 4).

That’s exactly what he’s going to claim. They’ll then cut it into campaign ads saying that his actions not only saved the economy, but resulted in huge job growth and job creation.

What those ads will ignore (and what everyone needs to focus on) is that Trump’s failed covid19 led to the unprecedented economic collapse and the loss of far more jobs than were created in May. When you destroy 10x as many jobs as were supposedly created, that’s a bad place to be. Biden’s ads will focus on that. Or they should.

Someone tweeted the other day that the release of the pee tape would be the highlight of his administration.

Yes, I think it would be a blip forgotten in a few days. His base is locked in: they don’t care, as long as he puts in wingnut judges, craters the administrative state, and oppresses the right people, they’ll put up with anything.

The only vector that matters is the people who were apolitical and have never voted before. If they show up, pissed off, he and the GOP are done. That’s why I suspect he may lose, but not by a large margin, and it won’t feel like a victory. The Banana Republcians have to be utterly crushed as well.

So explanation for Iran’s experience: It appears that because of its dire economic straits due to the US repudiation of the Iran accord, Iran opened prematurely. But at least, so far, there isn’t a corresponding spike in deaths.

Still unresolved as to what is likely to happen here.

It’s great that some people are going back to their jobs. As I see it, that’s the easy part. The economy will still be struggling for a good long while because covid still walks among us and we are a consumer driven economy. Things will get better to a point, and there’s a certain amount of pent up demand, but then people will likely be cautious with their money even if their job is fairly secure. The need for a financial cushion will be apparent and most people will probably want to save a bit rather than shopping recreationally. It may feel great to go out for a meal again, but I’ll bet most people won’t risk it often, or at all once the weather gets cold and they don’t want to dine al fresco. Travel won’t be carefree.
And all those people supported by jobs dependent on people doing that spending won’t be employed.

The Grift Never Sleeps. It Doesn’t Even Doze.
A Treasury official is overseeing a lot of public money. His family is getting rich. Charlie Pierce

The grift never sleeps. It doesn’t even doze. It doesn’t even “rest its eyes.” The grift has too many eyes; some of them, at least, are searching always for untended public money and the Main Chance. The grift never sleeps. Hey, hey. My, my. From ProPublica:

Behind the scenes … the Treasury’s responsibilities have fallen largely to the 42-year-old deputy secretary, Justin Muzinich. A major beneficiary of that bailout so far: Muzinich & Co., the asset manager founded by his father where Justin served as president before joining the administration. He reported owning a stake worth at least $60 million when he entered government in 2017. Today, Muzinich retains financial ties to the firm through an opaque transaction in which he transferred his shares in the privately held company to his father. Ethics experts say the arrangement is troubling because his father received the shares for no money up front, and it appears possible that Muzinich can simply get his stake back after leaving government.

I have slipped on ice and fallen on the back of my head like that. The only reason I didn’t end up in quite that situation (though I did briefly black out) was that I was actually walking down the driveway at the time, which meant my head was probably about a foot closer to the driveway behind me than it would have been if I were on a flat surface. Concussed me for a day. Scared me a little when I got up to pee from the sofa and found myself bumping into the hall wall a couple times like a drunk sailor.

You are fortunate. An injury like that can be lethal — it happened to someone who lived in my current development before I moved here. He slipped on the ice on his driveway, hit his head, and died a couple weeks later.

And yet, all we hear about is growing the economy.

My point about the key fobs is that these are items being sold to poorer people who dream about owning the Chanel gold earrings, but laid out $100 for a $10 item with a logo. Is there value in that? Maybe. I dunno.

Growing the economy is important if the population is growing, as it is in the US. In a free market, people should generally be free to waste their money as they see fit. Though they should be protected from con artists and dangerous products.

Another day, Another Karen…and she thinks she’s Bat-Woman!

rawstory.com

In an incident that was caught on video this Wednesday, an elderly woman in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, brandished a bat as she confronted people protesting the death of George Floyd.

Speaking to WOODTV, the woman said she was just simply defending her community.

“I just simply stated, you know, ‘You’re not going to burn down East,’” 75-year-old Karla Anderson said.

Yes, the economy needs to grow with the population, but beyond that are we factoring in the environmental costs of production and disposal? What are we making/buying?
Is using sophisticated psychology to make items more attractive to potential purchasers a con job? There are a lot of gray areas in here.

If I see one more ad telling me I “deserve” some item or other, I’m going to scream. Get out your ear plugs because you know that’s going to happen soon.

I hate how terrified I have to be that he’s treating the health of Americans so blithely. I hate how blase he is about anything involving minorities and how eagerly he is to co-opt anything just to self-aggrandize. I hate how he’s bent every single fucking thing in our government as a monument to his narcissism. Back in the days of South African apartheid, the SA consulate office in Glasgow was located not far from George Square, the city’s main square and home to the city council. The council passed a resolution renaming the small square facing the SA consulate Nelson Mandela Square. The SA consular attache suggested they might move elsewhere, the council made it clear to them that anywhere the consulate might relocate in the city their postal address would begin “Nelson Mandela”. The consular attache gave in.

The square in front of the Chilean embassy in Paris is the Place Salvador Allende. Disappointingly it was only named that in 2003 and by then the Chileans were ok with the name. (It being in a rather snooty bit of Paris the locals were unhappy though).

oh goddamnit…it’s an episcopal bishop, not an episcopalian one. one of the really sad effects of the loss of revenue in newspapers and magazines is that there’s no longer that guy from the Wire reading copy and shouting to someone, “It’s between you and me, Johnny! Not between you and I!”

Note that this is in response to the Mother Jones headline “White House Security Blocks Washington’s Episcopalian Bishop from Holding a Vigil at Her Church”. I still like it better than the WaPo headline of the bishop’s visit: “Historic D.C. church where Trump stood with a Bible becomes a symbol for his religious foes”. Buried in the story:

The rewriting of St. John’s as a symbol continued Wednesday. A group of clergy — including the region’s Episcopal bishop, Mariann Budde — planned a large afternoon prayer vigil outside the church. They had to move it a block away, however, because of an expanded security perimeter created by police agencies trying to control another day of mass protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.
[…]
Attendees silently knelt in front of a row of military police who were blocking access to St. John’s, a 204-year-old structure with a steeple and high white columns where a small basement fire was set during the protests Sunday night.

Because jackbooted thugs in an American city blocking clergy from visiting their church is a totally normal thing.

The lawyers said the two policemen who helped hold Floyd down while he was suffocated were rookies. As in only out on patrol a few times. That makes me wonder if this was more than just callous disregard for life.
It might have been making the new guys complicit in this sort of thing, sort of like when you force children to become soldiers and make them kill someone they know so they feel like they can never go home again and have nothing but their new group to belong to.

Probably Floyd’s death was unintended, but had to go close to the edge to make it effective.

So it’s a shame that the Trump administration has so few military veterans in it, otherwise they would have pointed out the obvious result of putting up a fence around the Whitehouse.

Yes it’s great for the people inside the compound that they are safe, but how are people going to get in and out safely?

Any vehicle approaching that “tiny man square” is going to have to do so on a known path, to one of the few gates in it. And any vehicle leaving it will be easy to identify and attack.

People wearing suits walking up to the police line to be let through might make it……but people leaving the police lines to leave? They would be asking to be targets.

The US military was only able to operate in Baghdad like that because they had overwhelming air support and were willing open fire freely.

I guess helicopters would work for getting people in and out of the complex, and we’d even be able to re-enact the en.wikipedia.org but shuttling the 375 people meant to work in the Whitehouse, in and out every day, as well as Trumps cronies and Russian handlers, that is going to be a shedload of flights.

/time to start thinking of funny phrase reminding people of the Berlin airlift I think.

Morning, all.

Trump’s former chief of staff John Kelly: “I think we need to look harder at who we elect. I think we should look at people that are running for office and put them through the filter: What is their character like? What are their ethics?”

Well, assuming he is referring to Donald Trump here:

1. Fuck you, Kelly: you -voluntarily - worked for this disgraceful asshole, you don’t get to lecture us about “character”.

2. I know it’s a common trope to assume that “Trump got a pass in 2016”: but that’s an assessment I believe is only partially true. I think he really WAS “put [] through the filter” - none of the “revelations” about his dishonest business practices, mendacious tendencies, sick personality, bigoted attitudes, etc, were really “news:. But the fact remains that he (to our national shame) became President ANYWAY: because (in ascending order of guilt); the Republicans nominated him, the Republicans let him run, and, most centrally: millions of people voted for him despite everything.

Not excuse John Kelly - IMO, “worked in the Trump White House” ought to be a Badge Of Shame forever - but ultimately, the problem with Trump goes back to us, not him. And that’s the toughest issue to have to face. Which I am not sure we are going to be able to do in an adequate manner.

Let’s not forget that beacon of southern charm, Mike Huckabee (from 2011):

Huckabee Replaces N-word With ‘Mau-Mau’

That’s when Huckabee, to the surprise of most everyone, started squawking that President Obama grew up in Kenya, where he was influenced by his father’s and grandfathers’ anticolonial Mau-Mauism to despise the British Empire—and, by implication, all white power.

and where it all started:

All this garbage started last year with Dinesh D’Souza’s repulsive headliner for Forbes, which maintained that Obama’s “anti-business” policies could be explained only by his “Kenyan anti-colonialism.”

…But here’s a simpler theory: The right spews this bizarre “anticolonial” claptrap because it gives them a chance to say “Mau Mau,” which conjures a more fearsome threat than the N-word itself.

If the roles were reversed they would call it “taking back our country.”

Jut a reminder that HUCK SINN loves to talk about his “personal relationship with Jay-Zuss” that moved him to override the Arkansas Parole Board and let Wayne DuMond and Maurice Clemmons out of prison so they could rape and kill again.

Let’s not forget that beacon of southern charm, Mike Huckabee (from 2011):

Huckabee Replaces N-word With ‘Mau-Mau’

I actually forgot that. There was so much of that crap and the GOP base ate it up. I’m also not happy with the way a lot of left wingers treated Obama too.

Can there be anything more un-American than opposing British colonialism?

Polygon has described Stan Twitter as “an overarching collection of various fandoms”, and additionally as a community that “[signifies] individuals congregated around certain, specific interests ranging from queer identity to K-pop groups, and added that “Stan Twitter is essentially synonymous with fandom twitter.”

Keep in mind that “the Mau Mau” reputation as some kind of primitive savagery was a deliberately racist image constructed by the British government, in direct contradiction to what their own experts had to say about the Kikuyu in general and the planning and strategy of the rebels themselves.

But that’s what the British always did…invent lurid stories about the brown people they were dominating so that nothing they did counted as “resistance to rule that makes sense” but was always some kind of atavistic, primitive aggression that required the level of civilian-targetting brutality the British always unleashed.

(In the case of the Kikuyu ut putting them in concentration camps and a lot of rape.)

Reactionary American dudes invoking the Mau Mau are confessing.

A lot of it was racist shit too. Michael Moore and Bill Maher can both kiss my Irish ass for crying about how they didn’t vote for the black guy to be a white guy. Obama has more understanding in his pinky about how actually to get shit done than those two clown. Oh and everyone who acted like Obama was the drone monster doesn’t say shit about Trump using them more but Glenn Greenwald has to poison naive, young left wingers about the reality of policy from his Brazilian villa.

It started the other day when someone tried to get #WhiteoutWednesday trending on Twitter - the KPop stans (fans of Kpop who employ ‘fancams’ to capture video of their favorite members of different bands) completely hijacked the hashtag. Same with #whitelivesmatter.

It’s so goofy and hilarious, but it’s heartwarming at the same time. And some of those Kpop groups have got absolutely killer moves.

One of my cousins tried to justify calling out the national guard by referencing Obama’s use of drones.

Enoch Powell and his 1968 Rivers of Blood speech…

“In this country in 15 or 20 years’ time the black man will have the whip hand over the white man.”

That was no dog whistle, it was a fog horn.
