It’s funny. They repeatedly accused the Obama DoL of fudging numbers and here they are, actually doing it. I’m going to enjoy the look on Trump’s face when he’s officially no longer President and knows it’s all downhill from here. No Barr protecting his ass. No Senate to enable him. But lots of time in a courtroom and hopefully eventually a call.

trump channeling bernie?

President Trump said his plan to address racism is a strong economy, after he was pressed on whether he has a plan to end systemic racism in the country, the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “It’s the greatest thing that can happen for race relations, for the African American community, for the Asian American, for the Hispanic American community, for women, for everything.”

The NYTimes has been intentionally baiting progressives to drive traffic to their website. That’s why they got rid of their public editor - they don’t want anyone snooping around their editorial process, which prioritizes digital subscriber growth over everything. That’s why they hired a doofus like Bret Stephens.

It doesn’t matter that some angry progressives cancel if they wind up with more net subscribers, and that’s been the case for years - it’s all about traffic: the editorial trolling gets the clicks, the visits.

They know exactly what effect the Cotton thing had, and if they went too far. So they will either keep doing it (if it’s a net+) or pull back just a bit.

Biden obviously shouldn’t sink too many resources into Texas, because it’s not a tipping point state, but the D’s should certainly deploy resources there to try to win that Senate seat. The D’s are going to have to win some lean R seats to win a majority, and the more places they are competitive, the better their chances are.

whyy.org

Curfews are one of the reasons for the explosion of violence and uptick in arrests. People know this - the cops see it as a green light to bash skulls and make arrests after the curfew, even on people deemed essential workers (as in NYC). It’s arbitrary and capricious and doesn’t reduce tensions. It ratchets them up and when you have heavily armed cops in riot gear and rubber bullets and tear gas at the ready, it’s a recipe for riots - induced by the cops themselves.

Deescalation can reduce the tension, but the better approach is not to have the tensions in the first place. It means police working with the people they serve to clean house and improve policing and police procedures and to eliminate the bad cops.

Right wingers love to talk about zero tolerance and law and order - but that applies to bad cops too (and those who remain silent in the face of bad policing).

I dunno: Texas may not be quite the monolithic (R) bastion it has been for decades, but, unfortunately, it looks like the chances of unseating Cornyn are pretty slim. OK, I will make the disclaimer that I am no expert on TX politics, (and will appreciate any education in the matter), but 1) It’s Texas: money for RW politics isn’t (and will NEVER) be an issue; 2) It’s still WAY too early in the electoral season to draw any conclusions above the wishful-thinking level; 3) There seems to be a fatal dearth of popular, qualified, state-official level (D) candidates to overcome the toxic effects of 1) - who is Cornyn’s opponent likely to be? (Primary yet??)

BTW, I don;t mean to be a downer here: if Texas still looks even remotely competitive by, say, September, I think the national Ds should throw every resource they can into the state: making the GOP fight for every seat in the House and Senate ought to be Basic Politics 101 at the DNC: but sadly, isn’t. (I was very pissed to hear that Tom Cotton, up for reelection this year, does NOT have a formal (D) opponent in Arkansas, just a write-in “independent”. OK, AR may be a lost cause, but SRSLY: NO ONE??)

Being out in a curfew is not an invitation to be assaulted by the police

Aren’t the rules the same no matter what time of day it is?

re: #94 Jay C

They ought to run someone, just in case the photos of Cotton play tongue polo with Graham get published.

One third of Americans used bleach or other household disinfectants “in non-recommended high risk practices” in attempts to reduce the spread of the deadly coronavirus, a new CDC survey finds.

Among the non-recommended practices were using “bleach on food products, applying household cleaning and disinfectant products to skin, and inhaling or ingesting cleaners and disinfectants,” the CDC says, as The Daily Beast reports.

When you’re afraid to come out, the thought of getting outed can make you suicidal. The fear puts you into complete denial. I felt that way for a long time. I’m about a year older than Graham. I’m not supporting his fealty to Trump, just saying that a lot of older men grew up never feeling that it was safe to come out.

Closeted men are also TONS more likely to seek sex that’s detached from their daily life.

Graham grew up in a different era; he was born in 1955, so even though he would’ve been in his late teens/early twenties during the “let it all hang out” era of the 1970s, even then, homosexuality was a major taboo.

In 2018 we finally had a Democrat run against Ratcliiffe and lose by 50 points. Do you throw money at that kind of race? 50 points is actually pretty good, it represents slightly more than the percentage of Democrats in the district.

Texas Democrats are running someone in every election this year. It’s a good thing, and it’s how we got rid of Pete Sessions and took away the supermajority in the Texas House. If things shift enough, Democrats could control the House.

A lot of the shift has occurred because the suburbs went blue due to women shifting votes, and I think it’s going to continue this year.

Hey Siri! Just how stupid are the assholes at OANN?

Back in March, at the very beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, popular QAnon “citizen journalist” Greg Rubini started pushing the narrative that the novel coronavirus was created by the Deep State, in cahoots with Dr. Anthony Fauci, for the purposes of ruining the Trump economy. It was not the first absurd theory he had imagineered and put forth as the truth. The claim, among others, was picked up by OAN “journalist,” granddaughter of fake psychic Allene “I’ve got the answers, call now” Cunningham, and author of one million non-existent young adult detective novels for girls who who hate feminism, Chanel Rion.

Rion, at the time, described Rubini as “a citizen investigator and monitored source amongst a certain set in the DC intelligence community.”

Later, in May, Rion would pick up another of his claims — one that the Obama administration had enlisted foreign intelligence to spy on the Trump campaign — and, during a press briefing, ask Kayleigh McEneny, “So to what extent was [former CIA director] John Brennan involved with that?”

At least part of the reason Rion may have thought that this was a true thing and not just something some random guy made up, other than the fact that she is very stupid, is not just because Greg Rubini has 130k followers on Twitter, or because his book The Spy Operations on Trump has made it to #3 on Amazon’s bestseller list in the “Intelligence and Espionage” category. Likely, it is also because he has claimed to be in supersecret contact with all kinds of Washington insiders and even wrote a whole book revealing all of the secrets that his “sources” — whom he will not reveal, and some whose identities he claims to not even know himself — told him. Supposedly. Probably he just made them up.

It will surely come as a shock to you that Greg Rubini, whose real name is Greg Palusa, is not actually any kind of Washington insider with connections all over and that he is not even an American (which makes his many “We the people” tweets a tad hilarious), but rather he is some dude from Italy who was once a groupie for a Pink Floyd cover band. (Weirdly enough, the QAnon shit seems to be rising in popularity in Italy since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Someday when I have enough energy to parse through social media in a language I am only about half-fluent in, I’ll have to do a thing.)

Yes and no, IMO.
Of course political campaigning is expensive: but it’s not all (and always) a matter of money, per se: where that money is applied (and how efficiently/effectively) can be just as important. This is a lesson Republicans learned years ago: how many states do we hear of with figures like “Republicans get 45% of the vote, yet control 60% of the Legislature”. The principle is simple: apply campaign money down to the Statehouse level: take over after Census years; gerrymander the state down to the last yard to ensure (R) advantage; control Statehouse forever. QED.
Of course, this implies a level of Party discipline alien to most Democrats, apparently (despite the RWNM propaganda to the contrary); but it doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

I think prospective candidates just feel frustrated at times because they know there are parts of the country that will vote for a Republican no matter what. I just think there’s way too much expectations on organizations that don’t have a big impact in the daily voter’s life versus the civic organizations that do for candidate recruitment.

The pathetic thing is that Trump is such a simp for dictators that he’d do this stuff without explicit direction. He wants into the Cool Club of guys who just get to kill people without even pretending; that’s his bag, and every time he’s around a dude like that he gets all fanboyish and fawning.

Germany is a democracy led by a woman who has both explicitly criticized him and implicitly shamed him by getting praise for doing shit he wouldn’t, so this is his version of a personal win-win scenario.

Not saying this guy isn’t taking sides, ‘cause I have no idea, but his tone of voice sounds exactly like the restaurant manager way back when I was in college and one of the (underage) group tried to order an alcoholic beverage. “I’d really like to but there’s an ABC agent in the room and if you aren’t 21 then he’ll shut the place down and put X number of people out of work for a couple weeks, so…” We knew there was no ABC agent in the room, but no one of us would be drinking.

Republicans constantly reject attempts to have impartial arbitrators draw up the lines. I think ultimately that citizens need to be focused locally more. More people should know who represents them in their capital.

Handouts?
Who controls DCs funding?

[Embedded content]

Some interesting background on DC Home Rule, involving my crazy buddy John Jenrette (he of Capitol Steps sex with wife Rita and going to prison during Abscam.)

John McMillan, a racist piece of shit from here in South Carolina, was chairman of the District of Columbia Committee and ruled it with an iron fist, never allowing a Home Rule bill to come before his committee. (per wiki—When Walter Washington, the Mayor-Commissioner of the District of Columbia, sent his first budget to Congress in late 1967, McMillan responded by having a truckload of watermelons delivered to Washington’s office.)

In 1972, Jenrette knocked McMillan out in the Democratic primary, but then lost to a Republican, Ed Young. The Home Rule Act was passed in late 1973, (again—per wiki—providing for an elected mayor and the 13-member Council of the District of Columbia. The Council has the ability to pass local laws and ordinances. However, pursuant to the Home Rule Act all legislation passed by the D.C. government, including the city’s local budget, remains subject to the approval of Congress.)

Jenrette then beat Young in 1974. Jenrette (for all of his craziness) was a total aberration among racist Dixiecrats—he really was anti-racism; had black staff; championed Ron McNair becoming an astronaut, etc.

Yeah, he was a drunk and a bit loony even back then, but he always believed that part of him getting caught up in Abscam was payback for him throwing wrenches in the gears of southern, racist politics.

Someone from BLM should state “The only reason we would want tanks is if everyone else had them.”

Trump probably has a boner because the kneeling issue was somewhat of a winner for him. He’s too stupid to realize that George Floyd may have/hopefully has irrevocably altered public perception of kneeling during the anthem.

And it still goes back to the underlying theme: POCs aren’t allowed to protest. Doesn’t matter how they do it.

I really can’t fucking believe that in the year 2020 we are still seeing [Southern] politicians bitching about proposals for anti-lynching legislation (!) - and on the same-old, same-old grounds that “it’s already illegal”…?

WTF? This sounds precisely like the arguments the old Jim Crow bloc used to make back in the ’30s-’40s’-50s: basically “white mobs extrajudicially murdering black people is already illegal in every state, so why are you insulting us by insisting the Feds have to get involved”??

This is actually remote western Washington, a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. It’s one of the gateway towns to Olympic National Park. Tribal reservations all around the area, Port Angeles is the closest big town. It’s more conservative than greater Seattle, but usually part of the more sane purple part of the state than the deep red hinterlands in the east of the state.

re: #258 Ferdinand

The family that was assaulted was from Spokane though, in the eastern part of the state. Probably trying to get away to the ocean and park for a few days to escape the madness, which makes me even more angry. My wife and I did our laundry at the Forks laundromat on our honeymoon. It’s a redneck logging town, but I’d hoped they were better than this.

In the early 19th century, there was a shift in how Americans saw mob violence. During the Revolution (and earlier), there were unwritten rules about mob violence. These attitudes were imported with European immigrants. Those in power rarely participated but allowed violence that mostly damaged property and/or roughed some people up. (tarring and feathering was a literal act). Most elite thought it a good idea to let the plebs blow off steam since in most communities the elites were out numbered. Mob violence in the run up to the War of 1812 caused Americans to beginning see mob violence as bad as opposed to an expression of political/social discontent.

I care that he’s an amoral GOPer whose actions in Congress have undermined civil rights of LGBT community and all minorities. He’s part of the problem.

Does this force him out of office? Don’t think it changes anything since a lot of people thought he was closeted even before today. Again, I don’t care who he schtups. I care who he and the GOP are fucking over with their regressive and cruel policies.

“…Trump has called up about 3,900 guardsmen from Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah to the city, in addition to the roughly 1,200 already activated in the D.C. National Guard. New Jersey’s governor said Friday its guardsmen were going home Saturday. The total number of guardsmen is roughly equivalent to the number of U.S. forces currently deployed to Iraq.”

According to Park Police officials and the 18-year-old who said he recorded part of the encounter, a cyclist stopped on the trail and pulled a roll of blue tape off the arm of a 19-year-old woman. Another 19-year-old woman was also there.

Doesn’t make it any less heinous, but if the article is correct, they were not little children.

We already impose tariffs on commercial vehicles because of frozen chicken, so why not?

White men and women losing their grip on power (i.e, privilege) is an ugly, ugly thing.

Their all-too-common reaction to this loss of power is what is ugly. Erosion of white supremacy is itself a beautiful thing.

re: #145 retired cynic

Any store that has carts or counters.
You have a problem, any problem, don’t get upset.
Just fill your cart up. Go to checkout. No rewards card. Just let them start scanning and suddenly you realize you do not have your:
1=Card.
2=cash
3=Whatever.
Tell them to continue and you will be right back as you quickly exit and drive away.
Works in smaller hardware stores:
Gather stuff up and place on counter. To the side. Tell them you’ll be right back.
Drive away.
I left about $1000.00 worth of stuff up on a Wicks Lumber counter one time.
Left full carts many a time.
Fuck them.
