If you took every dumpster in Los Angeles, put them side by side and rank-upon-rank in a field, filled them with empty plastic bottles and used diapers, doused them with gasoline, and set the whole thing on fire with a massed napalm strike by the entire Air Combat Command, you might have a close approximation.

More (I’m in and right out here) environmental degradation from Trump today:

Proclamation on Modifying The Northeast Canyons And Seamounts Marine National Monument

This proclamation modifies the national monument declaration by President Obama to permit commercial fishing and lobster trawling.

Still no “antifa is a terrorist organisation” proclamation.

Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument (Wikipedia, description of the area)

The first paragraph:

In Proclamation 9496 of September 15, 2016, and exercising his authority under section 320301 of title 54, United States Code (the “Antiquities Act”), the President established the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, reserving for the care and management of objects of historic and scientific interest approximately 4,913 square miles of water and submerged lands in and around certain deep-sea canyons and seamounts situated upon lands and interests in lands owned or controlled by the Federal Government. The President prohibited commercial fishing, with a phase-out period for American lobster and red crab fisheries, within the monument’s boundaries. This proclamation lifts the prohibition on commercial fishing, an activity that is subject to the Magnuson‑Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (Magnuson‑Stevens), 16 U.S.C. 1801 et seq., and other applicable laws, regulations, and requirements. This proclamation does not modify the monument in any other respect.

Just wanted to out this out here. My town is having a debate via op-eds in the local paper over taxes and funding the local library. The two arguments against the memorandum are: no new taxes (it would be tied with the school) and that services provided by the library are provided by other places like the unemployment office and various social service places that hold visits.
My town is having a debate over having a public library. That is all.

We had that debate here when I was on my village board; a bunch of loudmouths wanted to eliminate our public library.

Worldometer explains part of the discrepancy in that it first lumped the Michigan catch-up with today’s counts, but then went back and spread them over the dates of diagnosis. U Wash is still way off on the Alabama fatals, far lower than AL Dept of Health.

Involuntary internet vacation is over. The second set of storms coming through eastern PA on Wednesday night knocked out the power. It came back on this morning after about a 40-hour outage. Internet service came back in the last couple of hours.

Lost about 1/4 of the food in my freezer. Full extent of losses in the fridge itself is still being evaluated. Might be a spate of binge cooking this weekend.

As feared, the Covidiots were out in force. Very few wearing masks and social distancing was a joke. Since they only brought 4 of us back for phase 1, we are working 4 - 12 hr shifts per week. So I’ll be able to go home for at least a couple of days each week. To add even more misery to my life. The Keurig in the shop gave up the ghost and I have been without coffee for the last two days.

Part of the issue is that IHME isn’t a tracking site, so much as a projection site. So tracking just isn’t their thing. Their FAQ says that they get their data from Johns Hopkins, https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/, but it doesn’t look to me like they’re totally following it. From what I can see, the last time they updated with tracking data was on May 19th. As I said, what they care about is the future.

Of course, Worldometer, despite being the tracking site everyone uses, is kind of a black box. They say they’re “an international team of developers, researchers, and volunteers”, which could mean anything. In any event, most people agree that the numbers are too low, so I wouldn’t stress out over losing minimal data integrity.

After a nap and some consideration,

I think people should actively make fun of Donald Trump for his fawning behavior toward dictators and murderers as often as possible.

Stack up the decades of him flapping his mouth about how dominance is about using force to waste people and just keep pointing out that he’s thirsty to the point he abases himself. Which has the benefit of being completely fucking accurate; the man behaves around mass-murderers like Uriah Heep on Grindr. The complete transformation of the man when he gets the scent of some foreign dude who’s ordered a defenestration resembles nothing so much as the script of humiliation-themed porn.

Except don’t use my kind of language. “This man enjoys being cucked by mafioso and dictators” or “dictator simp” or some such.

Also, Rachel Maddow interviewed Retired General Lute. He discussed why so many retired generals have expressed concern regarding the Administration’s behavior.

His points were
1. Administration officials discussed American cities in terms of battlefields.
2. The threats to use military force against US civilians expressing Constitutionally guaranteed rights.
3. The presence of the National Security leadership (the Defense Secretary and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) tagging along behind Trump after legally protesting citizens were evicted by force from Lafayette Park.

Basically, he implied that the US Military organizational values are to be loyal to the Constitution. And was signaling that if forced, they would choose the Constitution rather than the Administration.

Kind of depressing that when fascism came to America it came in the form of an authoritarian weeb that wants all the power so that he can feel loved, desperate for acknowledgement from dictator-senpai to the point he behaves like a love interest in a low-grade anime.

The Borowitz Report:

Trump Claims That Wall Around White House Is to Prevent Staff from Quitting En Masse

Lashing out at critics who have charged him with building a wall around the White House to protect himself from peaceful protesters, Donald Trump claimed on Friday that the purpose of the wall is to prevent staffers from quitting en masse.

“The wall is not to keep people out. It’s to keep people in,” Trump angrily told reporters. “If anyone thinks he’s going to quit this White House, he’s going to have to climb over a ten-foot wall first.”

Trump added that he was considering invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807 to put down further rebellions by the Secretary of Defense, Mark Esper.

“Between the wall and the Insurrection Act, no one is getting out,” he said. “No one.”

Trump also dismissed reports that he had spent much of the week hiding under his desk.

“I have been inspecting the area under my desk,” he said. “There are no problems.”

Semmes had an Oh Shit moment when he found out the war had been over for months and he was sort of a pirate. Made a negotiated surrender in England.

[Jay puts on his Military History Pedant hat (a plumed Admiral’s bicorne today)]

Actually it was James Waddell, commander of CSS Shenandoah who was the late-surrender guy ( he only found out about the end of the war while raiding whalers off the coast of Alaska, and had to sail all the way to Liverpool -the long way- to bring his ship back).

Raphael Semmes was the captain of the noted raider CSS Alabama - who got rescued after a Union ship sent Alabama to the bottom off Cherbourg in June 1864 (the battle famously painted by Edouard Manet who was there on vacation at the time).

Good riddance to the statue in any case.

Understand that this isn’t just bad taste, it’s deliberately taking the story of an unjustly dead man and consuming it. It is ghoulish in the literal sense…and it is not unique to Donald J Trump.

This is why white Republicans appropriate the mantle of the Holocaust and the Civil Rights Movement when they face any pushback. Those events do not actually matter as things that happened to real people for reasons in a deeper context that bear contemplation; the suffering doesn’t matter, the lives don’t matter, and there’s no message to learn, but the brand recognition of suffering has use-value.

Radio was a great invention and it wasn’t very far in the future at the time of the final Confederate surrender (about 35 years). The Spanish-American War of 1898 was the last naval conflict in which radio played no part, while it had a major role in the Russo-Japanese War just 6 years later.
Btw, this November 2 is the 100th anniversary of the first commercial radio broadcast, on KDKA in Pittsburgh.

Grandma and Grandpa Bacon heard the 1920 KDKA election broadcast. A friend had a crystal radio set and brought it to their boarding house in Ambridge PA. Lots of people were there to take turns listening since it had no speaker, only an earpiece. They took turns listening. Grandma said the sound was very faint and they had to keep adjusting the crystal position to hear the signal.

One such post includes an image of a blood splattered truck with the caption “Just drove through Minneapolis, didn’t see any protesters,” reported WOWK.

Another shows Hess wearing a t-shirt with the words “All lives splatter. Nobody cares about your protest. Keep your ass out of the road.”

The t-shirt also features a cartoon image of a car driving through a crowd of people and knocking them into the air.

And it’s funny, if he had said

“I would never kneel before the American Flag. It’s just not how I was raised in our rich white western suburb of Austin, TX.

But if my team mates feel the need to do so because of police violence, a situation that I could not imagine happening to me or my family, take a stand against those actions and take a knee, I completely support them.

I’m also imaging how this would have affected me if I had just happened to be born into a black or mixed race family. I now believe I’d be right there with them, and will be with them in the future.”

Well, since Zergnet is a rent-seeking click aggregator, I’ll give you the original.

When you stop wearing underwear, this is what happens to your body (goes to The List, a health, entertainment, beauty, and royal family fan site)

More and more women are choosing to forgo underwear for comfort, health, or appearance — no one likes panty lines or wedgies. And while wearing underwear has its benefits, going commando may actually do some good, but the decision to wear underwear or not ultimately comes down to personal preference, as noted by Shape. Medically speaking, however, your vaginal area is “most happy and healthy when it has a chance to breathe,” Dr. Lisa Masterson of The Doctors fame told PopSugar. But before you shout, “Hallelujah!” and ditch your panties, you may want to know what happens to your body when you stop wearing underwear.

(more, caution for discussion of UTIs and yeast infections)
