Four poultry executives charged in chicken price fixing plot (BBC)

Well, we do have anti-trust laws after all.

A federal grand jury in Colorado has charged four executives from two US poultry companies with conspiracy for chicken price-fixing.

The leaders of the Pilgrim’s Pride and Claxton Poultry companies were indicted on Wednesday for a years-long plot to rig bids and elevate costs.

Prosecutors say they worked to raise prices for chicken sold to restaurants and stores from at least 2012 to 2017.

The chiefs face up to 10 years in prison and a $1m (£798,0000) fine.

The case stems from a Justice department antitrust investigation into anticompetitive conduct in the poultry industry.

From last thread

Police apparently held a black uniformed Providence, RI firefighter at gunpoint in front of his firehouse. A superior later saw the body cam footage and apologized but the officer in question never apologized nor were there any consequences.

Naturally, the Police Union is going DARVO

“It is sad and disgusting that a Providence firefighter would distort the truth about our police officers, and that his opportunistic union president would recklessly publicize these mistruths in an environment when police are under attack. The only injustice here is that by the firefighter in question and his union president,” the statement concluded.

From the original story, there’s body cam footage, so this should be interesting.

re: #44 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

From the link, this is beyond pathetic. A serving officer of the US Air Force duped by obvious Russian and white supremacist disinformation.

Some responding to the posts were incredulous, but few could argue when a screenshot of a direct message from Col. Jeff Edwards, the commander of the Oregon Air National Guard’s 173rd Fighter Wing, was posted in one of the groups.

“Team Kingsley, for your safety I ask you to please avoid the downtown area this evening. We received an alert that there may be 2 busloads of ANTIFA protesters en route to Klamath Falls and arriving in downtown around 2030 tonight,” the post stated.

Maj. Nikki Jackson, a spokeswoman for the 173rd Fighter Wing, confirmed in an email that the message had come from Edwards.

“This was an internal message sent by Col Edwards to the Citizen-Airmen of the 173d Fighter Wing for their situational awareness and safety,” Jackson said. “The alert was received from local law enforcement agencies here in Klamath Falls.”

My response if I were still in service: “Colonel, you are relieved.”

They are both referring to an article on menstruation. That in itself is not the problem, the problem is they are both digging in on the TERF language. We already know about Ms. Rowling, but Dr. Mack is talking about being “precise” in pronouns (as in “he and she”), then dragging people because they are using “they” or “you” as singular non-gender specific first- or second-person pronouns (despite centuries of use that way).

I also believe that police need to go back to revolvers. The 17+ rounds of modern plastic fantastic bottom feeders has become a crutch.

They can have a shotgun or lever action rifle in the trunk of the car for when they need more firepower.

I don’t care if they use revolvers or semi-autos, but I believe they should be kept in their cars and only brought out when on a call where there’s an armed suspect. The pistol storage should immediately notify a supervisor and dispatch when it’s opened.

Shotgun in the trunk… yeah maybe.

I’m really leaning toward all rifles and armor beyond the normal vest you can wear under a uniform should be restricted to SWAT teams, and SWAT should be controlled by state police departments. Their use should be allowed only under very specific circumstances and you need call the governor before the local state police division dispatches them.

Also body cams on all the time. No I don’t care if you are on your lunch break dude. If we need this in court that can be edited out.

Another thing that definitely should be part of any reform beyond much of what is being discussed is how law enforcement and the press/media interact.

Any attacks on the media by law enforcement should be an immediate fire-able offense and they should be charged with not only felony assault but a first amendment violation on top of it.

Also because of a trend I noticed after 9/11. They need to ban law enforcement agencies from using encryption on their radios beyond the channels used by detectives on surveillance. More agencies are doing this and it’s always intended to keep the media out under the guise of an “officer safety” issue that literally rarely if ever happens.

Oh and a another thing. Targeting medical personnel during a protest. That should be another one way trip to a long jail sentence too.

If it’s a war crime on the battlefield, it definitely shouldn’t be OK to do on our city streets. I’m bent enough about this one to think of it being eligible for life sentences.

Also every cop who removed someones mask during this for any reason, because of COVID should be charged with reckless endangerment, assuming there is not a specific law for this regarding viral and bacterial infections.

Unfortunately, I’m just some dude on the internet, without the ear of anyone in Congress who gives a fuck. In fact AFAIK I don’t even have a Congressperson right now (Criminal Duncan Hunter’s district).

The body cam should not be able to be turned off by the officer and to be on duty with it off should be an automatic firing offence.

Even uniformed officers need to use the bathroom and have reliably off the record conversations to develop confidential sources, so my solution is that body cams should automatically record to a protected file on these events:

-on any sound over 80 to 85db. IOW is always set off by the officer issuing forceful commands.
-any time any weapon, spray, tools or cuffs are drawn (RFID on smart belt)
-any time either back door of a squad car or SUV is opened
-any time a K9 unit is outside the kennel (RFID on collar)
-any time the officer is detected to be running
-any time the officer’s heart rate is detected to be elevated (smart watch)

They are both referring to an article on menstruation. That in itself is not the problem, the problem is they are both digging in on the TERF language. We already know about Ms. Rowling, but Dr. Mack is talking about being “precise” in pronouns (as in “he and she”), then dragging people because they are using “they” or “you” as singular non-gender specific first- or second-person pronouns (despite centuries of use that way).

I think you are misinterpreting her. Dr. Mack I mean. She says she has gender diverse friends.

A bit more on that here: thedailybeast.com

A key takeaway from that article:

The verbal tussle happened in the Oval Office just days before Trump’s ill-advised bible photo op, which Milley attended. A senior military official told the New Yorker that the president and Milley “got into a shouting match” with Milley insisting the military could not be dispatched against American civilians. “I’m not doing that,” he reportedly told Trump.

JFC….Trump wants his very own Tiananmen Square massacre - and he wants it now.

The world is on fire, and the plague is still spreading. Economies are crashing everywhere. Tens of thousands of people are out on the streets tonight, protesting the level of violence that LEO’s are inflicting on peaceful citizens attempting to redress the government by their assembly because an entire race of people in this country keep getting shot down and killed when they are not armed.

And one of the biggest themes tonight on this thread?

Yikes. Perhaps I shouldn’t have brought that into the conversation then.

I should restrict my conversation to the subjects noted above. It is apparently not possible to be concerned about other things which are less pressing but still concerning to millions of people without being “privileged.”

Ms. Rowling being a bigot is off-limits.

I wasn’t aware it was “white privilege” to call out bigotry in all its forms, particularly since so many black trans women are attacked and killed in this country (and hers).

I’ll catch y’all some other time, when it’s permissible again to talk about other things.

With the world in pandemic and crashing economies, neither subject of which I have enough education to write sagely about, or about police violence on protestors, since the protests here have not had that issue, I really don’t have anything I can contribute.

Here have some guinea pigs eating a banana for Aminah.

Um, okay, but do me a flava and flip that around for a second. Because all that shit applies so much more to Rowling, who chose this specific moment of all the goddamned fucking moments, to narcissistically try to insert herself and her weird passive aggressive anti-trans bigotry into the mix.

It’s also instructive to bear in mind that black trans women are the single most vulnerable group in our society, having the highest suicide and murder rates. So, yeah, from that perspective addressing JK’s dangerous and wholly recreational bullshit actually does feel relevant right now.

When the lies are so big that even statistics won’t cover them up:

Coronavirus: Hard-hit Brazil removes data amid rising death toll

The health ministry said it would now only be reporting cases and deaths in the past 24 hours, no longer giving a total figure as most countries do.

Mr Bolsonaro said the cumulative data did not reflect the current picture.

The idea that all of this can be fixed with “reform” or “oversight” is becoming untenable. Short of a new law to deal with qualified immunity, any such work will be wasted efforts as unions undermine every effort by promising to support any cops who resign and attack any who go along with it. These assholes are doing this because they know that threats of firing the “bad” cops are toothless.

Fairfax County just had a case where a cop was working with a man who appeared generally incoherent, but highly agitated. Another responding cop, who apparently had just arrived walked up to the man and tased him. The tasing cop has now been charged with assault.

On Saturday, June 6, at the direction of the Fairfax County Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Police Officer First Class (PFC) Tyler Timberlake, was charged with three counts of misdemeanor assault and battery. Timberlake has been an officer for eight years and assigned to the Mount Vernon District Station.

Officers responded to a call for service around 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon involving a man in crisis wandering around in the roadway. As an officer attempted to deescalate the situation that was underway, PFC Timberlake arrived shortly after and used force that is unacceptable.

Based on this action, both a criminal and administrative investigation were immediately initiated at the direction of Colonel Edwin C. Roessler Jr, Chief of Police. The actions of the officer clearly exceeded the boundaries of law, policy and professionalism.

The Fairfax County PD facebook page link behind the hidden tab has links to bodycam video of the incident as well as other information. It looks like the man in crisis survived the encounter. It is disturbing, so please use care before viewing.

Also the youtube bodycam video starts out muted, but becomes very loud as soon as the officer starts to exit the car. Be warned.

If you are genuinely curious, the County Guidelines are here:

My guess would be that the sanctioned officer committed several infractions. First, he unilaterally seized control of the situation from the officer who was primarily handling the situation. Second he did so without coordinating with that officer. Third, he escalated unnecessarily. Fourth, his goal appeared to prioritize ending it quickly rather than attempting to achieve what the manual calls “Objective Reasonableness”

It’s also clear that many Police Departments need to be completely shut down, everyone fired, many investigated, and rebuilt from the ground up. This is not funny or cute. If I did this to them I’d be in prison for years.

Every single one of these incidents needs to be followed up on for legal action and possibly prosecution. Letting these fuckers get away is not going to fix anything and if you try to fix around them the rot will re-consume everything.

-any time the officer’s heart rate is detected to be elevated (smart watch)

personal responsibility.
simple.

because it’s only after the fact that we find out..

While FOX News Channel was being their pro-bigot and pro-business selves, and put it in a nice bar chart for their viewers, they didn’t come up with it.

The stock market has a long history of ignoring social upheaval (Fortune, June 1, 2020)

Fortune goes into the details of the S&P and Dow on each of those men. For example, they note on the day of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the markets dipped about 0.5% on the day of his death, but rose 3.5% a week later.

They made the same comparisons with the other men. All FOX did was turn the Fortune article into a graphical display (and didn’t cite Fortune as the source, because plagiarism is always fine with conservatives).

What Fortune’s argument is that the stock markets are not connected to real life issues in the USA.

Andrew Ross Sorkin was on Colbert this week; his explanation for why stock market increases are so disconnected to the day’s events is… that it is. The stock market doesn’t reflect the “real” economy out in meatspace. It’s evidence of what investors think the real economy in general, or a specific company or sector, will be doing a year from now.

That can be useful on a city-by-city basis. But it means we get a heavy/clumsy National Guard or State Police interim. They’re not going to allow a vacuum. The example was Phenix City AL, so corrupt that it had an impact on the mission at Ft Benning.

Americans Are More Troubled by Police Actions in Killing of George Floyd Than by Violence at Protests, Poll Finds

WASHINGTON—Americans by a 2-to-1 margin are more troubled by the actions of police in the killing of George Floyd than by violence at some protests, and an overwhelming majority, 80%, feel that the country is spiraling out of control, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.

158
Colère Tueur de Lapin  Jun 7, 2020 • 6:12:43am

NBC News version

WASHINGTON — Eight-in-10 voters believe that things are out of control in the United States, with majorities still concerned about the spread of the coronavirus, pessimistic about the economy returning to normal before next year and down on President Donald Trump’s ability to unite the nation.

Those are the major findings of a brand-new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that was conducted May 28 to June 2 — during the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, as the U.S. death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 100,000 and after millions have lost their jobs.

Which, if accurate, means a third of our country are assholes for fun. Because if you’ve been paying even peripheral attention over the last 10 days there’s no way you could excuse this behavior unless you get some satisfaction from what cops are doing nationwide. And what I see on Fox, hear from conservative online forums and social media, and hear on the radio confirms that they’re pretty much addicted to hating and being divisive, that’s the payoff for them. They break everything around them and they don’t care. Problem is, they’ve hit the ground running a long time ago and we have a lot of fighting and work to do. My concern is after the election, even with President Biden at the helm, that many people will think their work is done. Voting is the beginning of what needs to happen, not the end.

“Remember when” conservatives had an organization (blanking on the name) that wrote template laws for state and local governments? Maybe we should turn that around, and our famously organized progressives should present a template for state and local laws to address law enforcement from the ground up. Obviously, many places wouldn’t touch it, but if the reforms were reasonable, and some areas start taking them up, there might be a bit of a snowball effect.

I’m sorry to school someone with a PhD, Katie, but “you” and “they” have been used as a singular pronoun since the 1300’s. If you hate English so much, why do you keep using it?

Wasn’t she just responding to someone who insisted that the only proper pronouns for a person were “she”/”he” and basically objected to the use of “they”? So Dr. Mack was pointing out that “you” is used as both singular and plural — and that “thou” had been discarded. It sounded to me as though she was being supporting of those who want their personal pronoun to be “they”. This does seem to be separate from the TERF issue.

I disagree there. Bristol really needs a museum that focuses on it’s slave trading past. And how much money was made off selling tobacco.

Part of that museum should be how society will ignore someone’s evil behaviour if they provide enough money to their city. And the statue that will have a description of “This statue used to have a prime position in the heart of the city” would be a good example of that.

Part of that museum should be how society will ignore someone’s evil behaviour if they provide enough money to their city. And the statue that will have a description of “This statue used to have a prime position in the heart of the city” would be a good example of that.

I agree, but that can only occur after schools teach nuance.

A year from now? Too much of the market is controlled by algorithms that look at what happened in the last fraction of a second.

Apparently singular “they” is a lot older than singular “you.”

I was about to post something similar, but of a more general overview.

I read something last night that there’s an undercurrent among former GOP leaders to finally throw in the towel on Trump (because the fucking idiots somehow could not have seen him destroying the country four years ago.)

Yeah, that’s a good thing. Colin Powell speaking up is a good thing. The problem is, the article indicated that few, if any, would do the right thing for the better of the country they so profess to love: vote for Biden.

IIRC, Powell may not have voted for Trump, but like a good conservative, he refused to vote for the qualified candidate. Probably because “Wrong party” and maybe being he was infected by the three decade conservative media smear campaign against her.

Christ, one unnamed senator said he wanted Trump to lose but still have a Senate majority. Because even when these morons finally realize what a danger Trump is, they still want the power to continue destroying people’s live that his presidency has granted.

My desperate search for the bright side in this is that if these oh-so-stalwart patriots who voted for or refused to stand up to Trump can’t do the right thing, maybe it’ll push the fucking idiot “independent” voters in this country to vote Biden.

That’s all I got in the hope department right now.

Oh and if you want to see how respectful Trump really is about the National Anthem. Look at him during the Super Bowl last year when the anthem was played. He just did what he always did. Played patriot for his idiot cult who are actually dumb enough to think the the man who said he liked service members who didn’t get captured has any respect for military service.

Does Melania have her left hand over her heart or is the video reversed? I remember how wingnuts spammed FB & Twitter with fake photo of the Obamas using left hands.

And kneeling, in a church, with clergy present, isn’t “cowardice”: it’s respect. A concept Trump and his cult obviously have difficulty in comprehending….

You know, I’m old enough to remember that in some liturgical churches (thinking Catholic, Episcopalian) that people used to kneel at certain points of the service to show respect and worship. But of course Donnie the Thug would never do that.

I know I’m a minority here but I wouldn’t complain if W endorsed Biden. Republican voters need to hear it from their own leaders’ mouths about how fucked up Trump is.

I don’t think you are. That’s exactly what I was talking about above. My entire life, the GOP has constantly run on this “We’re the true patriots” messaging. Now that we’ve discovered some of them have a bridge too far (because apparently running child concentration camps wasn’t it), they still will not step up and do the right thing for the country they supposedly love.

I will happily celebrate someone like W openly saying “I’m voting for Biden.” But they can’t. They are looking for every possible loophole to somehow condemn Trump without taking the needed and adult action of voting for the one candidate who has the chance of beating him.

What’s a journalist supposed to be now — an activist? A stenographer? You’re asking the wrong question. by Margaret Brennan, WaPo

What if we framed coverage with this question at the forefront: What journalism best serves the real interests of American citizens?
Make decisions with that in mind, and at least some of the knotty problems get smoothed out.
Using that lens, Cotton’s views should be known, but not amplified and normalized within the prized real estate that is the op-ed page of the New York Times. Rather than present it as stamped with the imprimatur of the Times opinion pages, why not examine it in a news story that can provide context and can interrogate the facts he advances?
And what about these journalists whom so many want to criticize as taking on the role of activists?
I am enough of a traditionalist that I don’t like to see mainstream reporters acting like partisans — for example, by working on political campaigns.
But it’s more than acceptable that they should stand up for civil rights — for press rights, for racial justice, for gender equity, and against economic inequality.

Mitch Albom, longtime mensch of the Detroit Free Press, pretty much sums up professional sports from a Detroit point if view:

So what does it all mean? Well, to sum it up: for now, in mid-June, it seems likely we will see some sports — without fans — before the summer is out.

Unless you live in Detroit, in which case basketball is out, hockey is out, baseball may never start, and once again, it could all come down to the Lions.

Heaven help us.

And if AG Barr’s blatherings about the Confederacy and pepper gas weren’t infuriating enough: here’s another gem from the Washington Post* from his interview with Margaret Brennan on CBS:

Attorney General William P. Barr signaled Sunday that he was reluctant to open a broad “pattern or practice” investigation into possible systemic problems at the Minneapolis Police Department, arguing that the actions of one officer do not necessarily indicate widespread problems.

The comments came during an appearance on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.” Pressing Barr on his views on whether there are systemic problems with policing in the United States, host Margaret Brennan asked “doesn’t opening the pattern-or-practice investigation into a place like Minneapolis, where there are questions about the broader issues with policing — it wasn’t just the one officer — wouldn’t that answer that question?”

***

“That’s exactly the reaction that I think has been a problem in the past, which is … just reacting to this incident by immediately putting the department under investigation doesn’t necessarily result in improving the situation,” Barr said, noting that state authorities were already examining the department.

“We stand ready to act if we think it’s necessary,” Barr said. “But I don’t think necessarily starting a pattern-or-practice investigation at this stage is warranted.”

Meanwhile, IRL, the viral outbreak has not ended and current evidence indicates that “reopening” is leading to the very rise in new cases that the experts predicted would happen in the fall/winter.

It’s also hard to gauge the actual effect that “reopening” is having on the economy because of deliberate efforts by Repubs to cook the books, such as forcing any business that took a PPP loan to rehire their staff in order to qualify for loan forgiveness, leading businesses in states that have “reopened” to rush returning staff to work in order to avoid loan payments.

There are only two choices
Trump or Biden
Pick one
If you don’t support trump, voting third party doesn’t get you what you want.
And not voting for either is not a principled stand.
It is cowardice

You don’t even have to “support” Biden
What you have to do is vote in a manner that assures trump is out

Is it good that we’re finally seeing GOPers and those who served in prior administrations speaking out about Trump now? Absolutely. What the fuck took them this long to recognize Trump was a clear and present danger and a threat to the nation? If not the covid19 failure, if not the calling of troops and gassing peaceful protesters, then why not when Trump extorted Ukraine to go after Biden or surrounding himself with undeclared foreign agents and felony conduct that included being a unindicted coconspirator in federal felonies.

Everything Trump has touched dies. The GOP deserves to die.
