(And, yeah, facial recognition is not a good thing..)
re: #2 Dr Lizardo
Fuck him and his meltdown. Our economy suffered a Fukushima style meltdown due to his complete failure to deal with covid19 in anything resembling competency. Heck, even using the word competency and Trump in the same sentence might result in a time-space rupture.
His failures caused our economy to collapse, to see 117,000+ deaths to date, and unemployment rates triple in record time.
About half the states that have reopened so far shouldn’t have. They’re seeing cases trending up, they’re not meeting the testing penetration set by the CDC or have elevated ICU usage due to covid19. And we’re into summer time here and warmer weather isn’t making covid19 disappear. In fact, the cases are growing in the hottest parts of the country.

I cannot imagine our wingnut Gov. Stitt implementing any restrictions state-wide based on this news. Our closures were small scale as it was, with OKC and Tulsa having to basically go on their own with since-lifted restrictions. And, this means that a shit ton of people are going to come to Tulsa and bring more virus here, mix it up and then bring it back too to their points of origin. Just a fucking horror show any way you look at it.
Biden event really well. You can make calls to other states if you feel yours is already safe for Biden or won’t flip for Trump. I’m planning on making calls as we get closer to the election but check out these links. All in all it was encouraging.

We are entering a precarious situation RE Covid-19.
As cases climb, some states may move to impose lockdowns again and if you thought the resistance to them was bad the first time well….round two might be even worse.
And the stupid thing is people would just be smarter and wear masks more often we wouldn’t be talking about a potential second lockdown because there would be no need for one.
But instead of smart people we’ve got thousands of yahoos on their way to a Trump rally next week that could become a flashpoint for a new infection and more packed clubs and restaurants sure to follow for July 4th.

Sadly, you’re probably right. And COVID-19 cases are going to increase - as duly noted, warmer late spring/early summer temperatures don’t seem to be doing much to inhibit the spread of the virus.
The economy is likely going to crater even further, and by the time election day rolls around, the US could be facing an added disaster, the collateralized loan obligations bubble blowing up.

Fucking Trump. Literally any other person who ran for this office in 2016 would have done better. They’d have nationalized the testing effort, put the DPA into action to make PPE and ventilators, and distribute them. They’d have a NATIONAL plan to deal with an epidemic that doesn’t care about state borders. They’d have WORN A MASK in public and encouraged others to. They could have made the “We need to come together, and be willing to take a hit personally to save lives. We can get through this” speech and meant it.
Instead, the response has been a patchwork, exacerbated by Trump pretending everything was fine and demanding his sycophants also pretend. Because we didn’t do the national ramp up in testing, at the end of 1 1/2 months of lockdown, we were STILL far away from testing enough people.
Because our President sees EVERYTHING solely in terms of his own popularity and election prospects, and totally lacks human empathy and even the ability to fake that, we are where we are - everyone’s bored of COVID, and it’s just getting started on us.
So we can just throw money at big corporations, but individuals can suck wind. America need a big change. https://t.co/OC3KNOJwlb

Honestly, I worry less about big companies getting money that we may not feel they ‘deserve’ than I am about the GOP letting benefits dry up later this summer because they are afraid people won’t want to go back to work.
Matt Yglesias said last month that there are two things that could happen to the economy over the next year.
1) We rapidly regain 95% of where the economy was in January.
2) We’re mired in low growth and high unemployment.
Then he pointed out that these are the same scenario. 95% recovery leaves us as bad as the depths of the Great Recession, and even if - perhaps ESPECIALLY if - we take the WH and the Senate, the GOP will dig in its heels against doing anything fiscally to address it, same as 2009.

Granted, self-quarantining is getting to us all. But Lord save us, Senator Tailgunner Ted Cruz needs a hobby very badly.
The Tailgunner enlivened the electric Twitter machine for nearly 12 hours by getting in a wrangle with actor Ron Perlman in defense of Rep. Jim Jordan, the coatless nuisance from Ohio. Perlman first tangled with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Breathalyzer) and, in the course of their tussle, Perlman made a crack about Jordan. This proved to be Cruz’s cue to flounder into the hooley. Which he did, with spectacular results.

re: #32 Charles Johnson

What happened to it is that the CARES act was actually an effective cushion, which has left us with Great Depression-level unemployment without Great Depression-level deprivation. A lot of that was the big boost in Unemployment Insurance benefits, as well as the PPP. Those two things have created the false impression that things aren’t as bad as they seem.
But, you know, nobody’s flying. Airlines can’t survive on 10% of their old bookings, at least not with the old level of staffing. Restaurant can’t survive with 50% occupancy, nor can hotels. Gyms are going under because they’re one of the best places to catch this shit.
And the GOP is starting to grumble about giving working people money not to work, so they’re unlikely to do anything helpful when these benefits run out.

Unless the Democrats have the balls to end the filibuster, which I’m not expecting, they will have to do it all with one reconciliation bill next year, then another in 2022.
that’s a good point. It seems to me that I researched this a little, years ago, and discovered that when filibusters became procedural, it was in a long era when Democrats controlled healthy majorities—sometimes super-majorities—in the Senate, and we could be generous. I wouldn’t be completely surprised if the rules get changed to go back to “talk for as long as you can” filibusters.

You know, all these scholarly conservatives seem to overlook that taking away the rights of the people was never once mentioned anywhere in the founding documents of the nation or the writings of the founders. If anything it’s supposed to be the other way around. Unless my civics classes were full of shit. And yet, any time that there’s a question of limiting the rights of others, it’s nearly always a conservative thing. Voting, equal rights for women, civil rights, etc, all seem to be challenged by conservatives. Unless I am missing something, then I stand corrected.

The two times it’s happened in living memory, nobody won an actual majority of the popular vote. In 2000 Gore was at 48.4% and in 2016 Clinton was at 48.2%. So, imagine a scenario where a major party nominee gets 50.3% of the national popular vote but loses the electoral college…
It could have happened in 2000, even without flipping Florida. Pull a few votes from Nader in California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, and a couple of other states, Gore might have been able to eek out a majority.

This is one of the reasons why I think a push to abolish the EC should be made in more general terms… specifically by pointing out that for most people, your vote doesn’t actually matter. If you’re a Republican in New York or California, doesn’t matter. If you’re a Democrat in Idaho or Utah or Wyoming, doesn’t matter. And as a result, it probably drives down turn out - why vote if you know the rest of your state is going to vote for the other side?
But you make it a true national election, and then, every vote does actually matter.
I could go into some philosophical arguments about it, but I think for most people, this is the argument that would make the most headway.

I remember that. They were convinced that Gore would lose the PV but win the EC. If people want to know why I’m bullish on our chances. Well there’s the fact that the GOP has only won the popular vote once since 1988. No President has ever won two terms while winning the EC but losing PVs and until this century, it actually had been quite a rare event and hadn’t happened at all in the 20th century. 1824, 1876, and 1888 btw and in 1828 Jackson beat Adams again this time in a landslide, 1876 was fishy as hell, and 1888, Cleveland ended up beating Harrison in a rematch four years later. Trump never had a mandate from the American people. We could solve the electoral college problem without a constitutional amendment. Just enlarge the House.
The last time we expanded the House, to its current 435, was 1927. The population of the country was less than 130 million that year. If we up the House to 700 or 800, then EC results would line up with the popular vote.
There’d still be the problem of the Senate, with 70% of the seats being for States that have 30% of the people… but at least the EC would be okay.

It won’t make headway, because the wingnuts in ‘overpowered’ red states don’t give a shit about the wingnuts in the blue states. Their ‘reasoning’ is entirely utilitarian, reverse engineered, because they like the results. So, really, the only way to make them hate the EC is for them to lose because of it.
The problem is, as you know, the only way to get rid of it is an Amendment, and the less populous states that would lose power are too numerous.
I say, make DC and Puerto Rico into states, and expand the House.

Biden’s path to the White House requires reversing Trump’s 2016 success in key battleground states. Here the news is good for the Democrats. In swing states that Trump won in 2016 (FL, IA, MI, NC, OH, PA, WI) Biden leads by 17-points

Not necessarily. The EC is tied to apportionment. Increasing the size of the House raises the question of “how to we allot these new seats”. Even if you use the current formulas, you still need to do the math to figure out how much it would actually shift the EC vote. I’m not sure it would shift it that much.

“John Does 1-4” are also among the defendants, referring to unidentified officers she alleges played a role in her injury soon after curfew on the night of May 29, when the 37-year-old from Nashville was wounded.

Not necessarily. The EC is tied to apportionment. Increasing the size of the House raises the question of “how to we allot these new seats”. Even if you use the re: #193 KGxvi
For shits and giggles, here’s an interesting tool to play with on apportionment… you can plug in populations (I just copied and pasted the 2017 estimates) and change the size of the House…
Going to 751 seats gave Texas as many electoral votes as California.
That doesn’t make much sense. It sounds like it didn’t adjust California properly.

We could solve the electoral college problem without a constitutional amendment. Just enlarge the House.
The last time we expanded the House, to its current 435, was 1927. The population of the country was less than 130 million that year. If we up the House to 700 or 800, then EC results would line up with the popular vote.
There would still be the problem of the Senate, with 70% of the seats being for States that have 30% of the people… but at least the EC would be okay.
Be very careful for what you wish for. Just imagine a House of Representatives having 700 - 800 members. Every member would be a prima-donna with a private agenda. That number would probably have multiple political parties which would require coalitions for every issue which comes up. Nothing would ever get done.

It’s over.
The CRA has replaced the U.S. Constitution. Any conflict between the two, CRA trumps the Constitution. And SCOTUS is re-writing the CRA all the time to add or change what it thinks should be in there.

Why didn’t that argument apply before?
More reps means each one represents a smaller block, and would therefore be more likely to listen to the constituents. The fact that you still need a majority means that the members would have to work together more, but it and first past the post voting would still only lead to two major parties.

Any chance he’d live til the inauguration?

Update: Since 2002, Greenland has been losing ice mass at an avg rate of 280 gigatonnes (Gt) per year, & Antarctica has been losing an avg of 147 Gt per year. 1 Gt = 1 billion metric tons, 2.2 trillion pounds, or 10,000 fully-loaded U.S. aircraft carriers. https://t.co/ZrlzwqDIeQ

If Rush wasn’t dying, I bet this would be Rush’s gift. I think Gorka might be worse though. Limbaugh wouldn’t know how to appeal to foreign audiences as well.

The obvious Trump/GOP response to this is to stop collecting the data. If there is no data proving climate change, then climate change doesn’t exist.
Trump’s magical thinking on covid19 testing has deep roots in right wing willful stupidity.

I’ve seen people objecting that it’s “just a shirt”. My guess would be that if Gundy is an OAN guy, there are other things that players find objectionable. The now public support of OAN just provide spring board.
But, now that I think about it, just being a fan of a RW propaganda machine that peddles conspiracy theories like a bead stand at Mardi Gras is enough.

Head coach of a Big 12 Football team? BFD.
My money is on he’ll be at Trumps rally washing Trumps balls.
I want his ass fired. Because college athletics are fucked up enough without that kind of shit.

Gundy is a RWNJ. The players, er moneymakers are going to find their voice.
I’m so ready for the reckoning.
This isn’t the half of it.

It gets even crazier!
The Ebay employees’ alleged plan was to harass the couple for months and later “proclaim that eBay noticed the harassment and offer to help them get out of” it.

New disorder: Re-Entry Anxiety, according to Time.
Most everybody in the thread thinks this is, instead, an old and VERY rational fear of getting sick.
Christ, the problem is not ANXIETY about the virus the problem is THE VIRUS which is still actively spreading, potentially deadly, and which still has no effective vaccine or treatment. Not wanting to go out is RATIONAL right now. Stay home if you can. Protect yourself & others. https://t.co/Dymd9BX8rX

Yeah, I was talking to a friend this morning, who is experiencing a weird form of gaslighting because she feels like an idiot for still staying home, wearing a mask when she does go out, etc. It’s like somehow society is punishing those of us who are being responsible because we don’t want to be stupid.
I just got home from work. I walked around all dang day and I am exhausted. And I am scheduled to do the same tomorrow. When we enter the building we have to our temperature taken and are given a piece of paper that says this is what happened. Being out on the street is not too bad but it is very quiet. And we have to come in earlier so that our equipment can be cleaned. The only good thing is that I will be off next week.
re: #343 PhillyPretzel
Be safe. I start my first (and so far only scheduled) “morning shift” at 3:30 AM Central Time tomorrow, as we start our beta rollout in Europe.

So as it turns out, Republicans/Libertarians are just peachy fine with “picking winners and losers” in business. …just as long as that business is huge, and what other “criteria” means apart from big campaign donations.

Trends as to what? Most folks are wearing some sort of face covering. Buses and trains were half empty.

Massachusetts has been very good. Most all of us are doing it right. I’m pissed off at the possibility that someone from outside might visit us and we’ll do this all over again. My town is fucked if it has to shut down again. I’m only now thinking of going out for non-essential (recreational) purposes.

The main thing that bothers me about staying home alone is that it really doesn’t bother me at all. And with all the lunatics running around here at the beach, I don’t see myself going anywhere non-essential anytime soon. My standby graphic—

The CV-19 trends in your catch area. Are your phases honest? In a very bad case, repeated exposure could be challenged as a violation of OSHA’s General Duty clause.
(If anyone at DoL actually gave a shit.)

Philly still has some high numbers but they are not going up like a rocket. That is why the Mayor and the Governor have labeled us as yellow. We were in red before. I personally would like to see everything go green before people go back to work.

It helps me immensely that my team is entirely comprised of anti-social introverted nerds, who are all extremely comfortable with continuing to work from home, essentially until we’re dragged into the office kicking and screaming. Also, as evidenced by the numbers that are being shown, the large proportion of Minnesotans are doing things right, the idjits who attend my church notwithstanding.

At our stores, Walmart will shop for you from a list submitted online a couple days earlier.
A masked worker will drop them in your trunk on your phone confirmation that you’re in a loading slot..
We’ve only done groceries that way, but I’m told they’ll include dry goods.

It reminds me of an old Bill Cosby routine, which makes me mad at him all over again for turning out the be a serial rapist and shitting all over a bunch of my happy memories.

Cut off 5” (long enough to go over your nose, mouth and chin) from the bottom of a tee shirt. Cut a 3” line from one seam. Lie flat. Slide a rubber band 1/3 of the way in on both sides, so you have two rubber bands “splitting” the material into the sections. Fold 1/3 in from the cut seam outer edge. Fold the other end in 1/3 and tuck into the cut seam. You’re all set.
If you want, take a Kleenex or paper towel and put it between the layers.

Or desperado style. Even a simple face covering helps.
I saw a study, from a few years back, that found that extra layers don’t improve filtration by as much as they make breathing more difficult.

Holy fuck. I went camping in Glacier and, because grizzlies were spotted a stone’s throw from our campsite and we had to leave, Bampf after college. But in both places I tried to “bathe” in the lakes and ponds, and it was soooo fucking cold. No way I could do this.
