Here’s something reliable.

Atlanta Journal Constitution:
BREAKING: ‘Higher than usual number’ of Atlanta officers call out of work

A “higher than usual” number of Atlanta police officers failed to show up for work Wednesday night, hours after the Fulton County District Attorney announced criminal charges for two accused in the death of Rayshard Brooks.

“The department is experiencing a higher than usual number of call outs with the incoming shift,” Atlanta police posted on social media. “We have enough resources to maintain operations and remain able to respond to incidents.”

RWNJ sources are hitting this hard. SMOTI, lying shitweasel that he is, claims that AJC confirms a mass walkout. No such thing, not yet at least.

It’s minuscule in two places:

1) Places that took it seriously to begin with and said “to hell with the federal government”, and
2) Places that just don’t have the population density or interaction density to sustain a pandemic situation (e.g. Montana, North Dakota).

Outside of that, the political delineation is pretty stark, with Democratic-run places like Minnesota and Illinois making progress, and deeply Southern Republican places like South Carolina and Florida staring at extreme case spikes and saying, “Well, this is the point where any sane and rational person would admit we fucked up, so… WINNING!”

Trump ignores SC’s opposition to offshore drilling, moves ahead with plans to find oil

Ignoring objections from South Carolina residents, politicians, and government agencies, the Trump Administration is moving forward with its intent to conduct seismic tests for oil off the Atlantic Coast.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a ruling Monday that overruled efforts in South Carolina to stop seismic testing for oil. NOAA, an agency in the U.S. Department of Commerce, is letting applications to conduct geological and geophysical seismic surveys for oil and gas along the South Carolina coast to move forward.

AJC has updated their story. They talked to the union flack:
Higher than usual number’ of Atlanta officers call out of work

Vince Champion, Southeast regional director for the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, told the AJC he could not confirm which police zones were affected.”There are officers walking off,” Champion said Wednesday evening. “There are officers saying they are not going to leave the precinct unless to help another officer. Some are walking off and sitting in their personal vehicles.”

Champion said he has been told APD was attempting to get back-up support from adjacent law enforcement agencies. But he said some agencies declined to help. “Why would you put your officer in Fulton County and take the chance of this happening?” Champion said. “You have an officer who just heard what Paul Howard said, saying he’s going to be in prison for the rest of his life or put to death, and now he’s got to surrender.”
Atlanta police declined to say whether the agency requested assistance from other agencies.

Lawsuit time? Presumably that would tie things up until January or so.

Lawsuits have been ongoing—from Feb:

The fight to stop seismic blast-testing and drilling for oil and natural gas offshore South Carolina just won one more round.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel of Charleston has denied the Department of the Interior’s motion to dismiss lawsuits filed by several groups, including the South Carolina Attorney General’s office…

Meanwhile, the department at any time could issue permits to start the work anyway — a possibility that opponents say they are ready to fight.

S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson called the case “vital to South Carolina and its beautiful coastline and natural resources.”

* Gov. Doug Ducey (R-GOP Governor Factory) announced that he would allow local municipalities to impose mask requirements. It’s only the least he could do after letting things get out of control. abc15.com

* Several cities are now announcing requirements for masks in the wake of Ducey relenting on this, including my own city, where mask usage has been spotty. abc15.com

* Right wing sheriff Mark Lamb (Pinal County) tested positive for COVID-19. abc15.com He says he picked it up at a campaign rally on Saturday and it was discovered yesterday in testing at the White House. Of course, we can’t know that’s where he picked it up; he could have been infected up to 14 days earlier. That said, he and my idiot congressman, coronavirus skeptic/denier Andy Biggs, filmed a really chummy video on Saturday, which the congressman posted to his Facebook. I am, of course, needling Rep. From an April article by Diane Hopkins from Oceana:

Policymakers and communities up and down America’s coasts agree that expanded offshore drilling is neither needed nor wanted. All the governors along the East and West Coasts, Republicans and Democrats alike, are opposed to expanded oil and gas exploration, development and production off their shores. Local chambers of commerce, as well as tourism and restaurant associations, are strongly rejecting oil exploration and development, including alliances representing over 56,000 businesses and 500,000 fishing families.

But all that matters to Trump and his gang of greed-mongers (talking about the asshole’s response after Obama increased testing and oversight after Deepwater Horizon:

Trump administration has drastically undercut these improvements by reducing testing and government review of results. The Trump administration cited that their suite of safety rollbacks will save the offshore industry about $824 million over 10 years. Focusing on industry cost-savings entirely disregards the safety and environmental benefits that the safeguards were intended to provide.

Regarding Mrs. Butterworths and race…

Mrs. Butterworth’s debuted in 1961. The syrup’s glass bottle was reportedly modeled after Thelma “Butterfly” McQueen, the actress who played Scarlett O’Hara’s maid in “Gone with the Wind.” But it isn’t clear if the matronly character is supposed to be black or white. The talking bottle in TV commercials was played by a white actress. However, because of the dark color and granny shape of the bottle, Mrs. Butterworth was commonly perceived as a black stereotype.

Interesting contrast:

The NY Times reviewer Jennifer Szalai found Bolton’s book “exceedingly tedious and slightly unhinged”.

OTOH, the Washington Post’s David Ignatius asserts that the book will astonish us and that Bolton eviscerates Trump’s foreign policy record and exposes him, in Bolton’s words, as “stunningly uninformed.”

Given the NY Times perpetual effort to whitewash Trump, I am always suspicious of their take on his behavior, unless I know the writer and I am unfamiliar with Ms. Szalai.

Of course, we are fortunate that Trump’s one positive FP attribute is that he does not thirst for bloodshed and is wary of engaging in conflict; if he had listened to Bolton, Trump’s foreign policy may have been an even greater disaster than it has been to date, especially with regard to our relationship with Iran.

A long-time family restaurant in Omaha called 11-Worth will close, after protests hit the restaurant. They decided in a Facebook post to name a breakfast dish after Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Protests continued as they refused to remove the name.

The owner alleges he received threats on his home telephone.

The protest organiser said he’d hoped to “open a dialogue” with the restaurant owner, but the owner rebuffed his approach, hence the pickets in front of the restaurant.

History records that Robert E. Lee was famously attached to Nebraska.

Agreed. And follow-up tomorrow with an explicit warning in writing: Any cops who “walk-out” without written approval of their superior will be treated as a voluntary termination which includes forfeiture of all earned benefits and pension, while any cops who refuse to take a call for any reason will be subject to 90 days unpaid suspension.

These aren’t union contract negotiations, these are cops who are refusing to do their jobs because they don’t like facing legal consequences for their actions. They do not get to pick and choose which laws apply to them.

In June 2019, Iran had shot down an unmanned American drone, and Bolton, who has always championed what he proudly calls “disproportionate response,” pushed Trump to approve a series of military strikes in retaliation. You can sense Bolton’s excitement when he describes going home “at about 5:30” for a change of clothes because he expected to be at the White House “all night.” It’s therefore an awful shock when Trump decided to call off the strikes at the very last minute, after learning they would kill as many as 150 people. “Too many body bags,” Trump told him. “Not proportionate.”

Bolton still seems incensed at this unexpected display of caution and humanity on the part of Trump, deeming it “the most irrational thing I ever witnessed any President do.”

Bolton and Trump are in conflict because they get hard over different kinds of abuse of power.

Commercially-produced evenly-sized and coloured eggs disappeared from the shelves here shortly after the epidemic started.

To fill the need, markets contracted with local chicken owners to provide eggs. That means the eggs aren’t even, but the local farmers and other chicken owners have an additional income stream.

I’m not sure what the rules read like these days, but it used to be an “up-or-out” system where if you weren’t promoted in a certain timeframe, then they booted your ass out. I heard they were going to get rid of a lot of those restrictions, but I’m not sure if this case would fall under such. Either way, it would mean putting this guy’s career on-hold for a year or more while the new admin comes in and gets settled.

Though Biden could probably earn himself a lot of brownie points if he pledged to approval the promotion as one of the first acts in office.

The Army has changed the way it determines who is eligible amongst mid-grade officers, effective for their first advancement cycle in 2019.

Commissioning officers is considered an extension of executive authority under advice and consent of the Senate.

Since the GOP has been doing everything it can to prevent Trump from having to face responsibility for his actions (see the Flynn case), I expect any resistance to arise in the Republican-controlled Senate.

But according to the WaPo piece, it seems like Vindman’s promotion -however routine and just one of “hundreds” - still has to get both Senate and WH approval: and Pentagon officials seem to be assuming that Trump (or someone) is going to block (only) Vindman as payback for his impeachment testimony. Officers serve “at the pleasure of the President.” It would be a shady use of that power to deny L COL Vindman a promotion the Army says he should get and Congress approves, but “shady” pretty much defines everything about the maladministration.

Hence my guess the Senate will try to prevent it first.

re: #148 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Iirc, back in the old days… ie 1980s and 1990s, after you served a ‘time in grade’ (a certain number of years in the previous rank) and you did not have a poor fitness report, served in a useful position doing useful stuff ( for example “Special Projects Officer” was generally a career killer), screw up, or ‘peeve someone who mattered’…

There were three promotion zones, ‘Below-the-Zone’ (ie early), ‘In-the-Zone’ with your class, and ‘Above-the-Zone’ (ie ‘last chance’). If you were passed over in all three zones, you were separated from the service. (Or if you had enough time in service, you retired).

For promotion to Colonel from Lt Colonel, time in service is around 22 years, time in grade is 3 years. About 50% of the Lt Colonels eligible for promotion to Colonel are promoted. About 10% were promoted early and about 3% were promoted ‘Above-the-Zone’.

Depending upon one’s Military Occupational Skill (MOS), (rare or in great demand versus dime-a-dozen) one may have better or worse chances. The best MOS used to be ‘Married to a Senator’s daughter’.

I applied to the Naval Academy while I was in “A” School in Memphis under the Navy’s commissioning programme.

I was selected for final interviews of people from Michigan to go to Detroit (at my expense) to meet with the selection board. I was the only active duty person in the group.

While I do not know you, I do wonder, though, if you were too non-conformist for that Admiral.

And once you get pigeon-holed you can get also get very stuck. I only knew one direct promotion from the ranks. Every other prior enlisted had to leave their service at the end of their enlistment, go to college, and get commissioned through ROTC.

Service academies were something totally different. You had to have something that made you really stand out to the appointing authority. Mostly it was through Congress, so you had to be well connected politically.

Some other news regarding the ending of COVID-19 restrictions in Czech Republic (translated from Czech):

The capacity of participants to hold mass events is increasing from 500 to 1,000 people from Monday, June 22. Swimming pools, zoos and other gardens, museums, galleries, castles, chateaux and similar facilities will return to normal operation, thus abolishing the limit of ten square meters per person and mandatory distances between people. From Monday, trade fairs with a maximum participation of up to 5,000 people at the same time will be allowed. Changes are also taking place for the spa sector, where the limit of ten people for group procedures is being abolished and at the same time the rules for mass catering for spa guests are being relaxed.

From 1 July, restaurants and pubs in the Czech Republic can be open from 23:00 to 06:00. People will also be able to consume snacks in cinema auditoriums, for example. However, the relaxation of these measures will not yet apply to places with a higher incidence of COVID-19*.

Trump International Golf Club asked Palm Beach County for rent relief, after reports the County Commission authorized a rent deferral. No other businesses are backed by a presidential bully pulpit—one more conflict from the President’s failure to divest.

It became clear that Trump’s massive denial of COVID was as much about fear of tanking the economy as it was about his businesses going under: it would be very embarrassing for him to face insolvency directly before an election…

I guess that on one hand going out of business is a human tragedy. (Assuming that they really do close down permanently.)

On the other hand it is the owner or his son unnecessarily acting like a provocative jerk. Amazing what happens when one goes out of one’s way to anger ones customers and neighbors. So my sympathy is rather limited.

By the way, the provocatively named meal was apparently biscuits and gravy with sausage and hashbrowns. Imagine destroying your business and (presumably) years of work over the naming of biscuits and sausage gravy.

And, apropos to an earlier lgf discussion, they use ‘hoagie’ in their menu as opposed to submarine, grinder, etc.

Unsurprisingly, the “LAW & ORDER!!!” crowd are cheering on the APD walk-outs, circulating talk that surrounding departments have blown off the mayor’s requests for assistance, and are basically calling for Atlanta to burn as “punishment” for thinking that shooting a fleeing suspect in the back is anything but lawful.

During the cop strike in New York, didn’t the “real” crime rate actually go down? That is, actually less crime, not just an artifact of no-one taking reports. I hope they’re keeping an eye on this during the latest outbreak of swine flu.

If anything, it could keep the terrified MAGAts holed up in their houses and not infecting everyone they meet with COVID-19, so there’s that.

- Drive him home
- Call him a cab/Uber
- Just let him walk home

Instead, the first cop on the scene called in for backup by a cop trained to deal with DUIs. And it seems that the second guy just went with the default option: Cuff him and leave it to somebody else at the station to deal with.

In an only tangentially related note, Bluegrass music has grown extremely popular in Northern Ireland, where they have come to claim it as their own.

They can make a certain case that Irish fiddle tunes, airs and ballads had a strong influence on American folk music, but that also ignores the negro influence.

But the other reason is that Ulstermen cannot bring themselves to embrace a lot of Irish folk music as it involves too many rebel tunes that celebrate independence and resistance to British tyranny.

Here’s the big issue for the fuckers staging a “Blue Flu”: What’s the endgame? See, usually ya’ll save this tactic for contract disputes, when you want to scare the city/town/etc into bending to your demands by threatening to leave it undefended until you get what you want. But you’re not negotiating a contract, you’re demanding the DA drop murder charges and allow two of your own to be cleared of all wrong-doing. Only about 9 percent of demonstrators protesting the police killing of George Floyd in New York City came from outside the five boroughs, according to a location-based study.

Of the 8,152 New York City protesters tracked via their cellphones during three days of protests between May 29 and May 31, the majority of outsiders came from nearby counties in New York and New Jersey, such as Westchester or Bergen, according to data provided by Mobilewala

It found that 76 percent of protesters in New York City were white while 14 percent were black, 8 percent were Hispanic and 1 percent were Asian. The majority were male between the ages of 18 and 34.

The 8,152 tracked protesters in New York City represent 30-60 percent of total demonstrators in the city, Datta said.

I know we’re all saying “IF ONLY BOLTON HAD TESTIFIED,” but the GOP Senate had everything it needed to convict him, and they were never going to do it. This was never going to matter, but speaking up would have been the patriotic thing to do, no matter what the GOP did.

The whole point of Impeachment was to get all the Senate Republicans on record as aiding and abetting criminal behavior and challenging American voters to get out and finish the job that they were too cowardly to do.

Let’s distill this a little further.

“Tucker Carson spreads White Supremacist propaganda and fascist ideology instead of fact-based news.”

I think this is about as basic as you can get.

Let’s go one step beyond that:

Fox News promotes white nationalist and fascist agenda by continuing to air white supremacists like Carlson and Ingraham and fascist propagandists like Hannity.

Fox News is the problem. It’s all propaganda all the time, and they call themselves news when they want to and propaganda when it suits them to avoid consequences of their actions.

The Court doesn’t get into the soundness of the policy or its recission.

It only addresses the fact that Trumpworld ignored the APA and improperly revoked the DACA procedures. In other words, had Trumpworld followed the rules set out in the APA, they could have done this.

Their fucking incompetence means that they lose on one of Trump’s signature issues (stopping nonwhites from becoming citizens).

APA - You have to publish decisions to make changes in the Federal Register, wait appropriate time for responses, and act only after fulfilling the APA requirements.

Kavanaugh thinks that the APA could be sidestepped. Good to know. He’s out to destroy the administrative state - again what the GOP has long sought.

Woman complains about Black football players — and then slurs them after restaurant manager gives her free food

Jordan Clark, a cornerback for Arizona State, tweeted about the Tuesday evening incident at Whataburger in Tempe, where he and two teammates, Nolan Matthews and T Lee, had walked to get food, reported AZCentral.

The fast food restaurant was closed to dine-in or carryout orders due to the coronavirus pandemic, and many eateries don’t allow walk-up customers at the drive-through for safety reasons.

So the Black players approached a woman in line and asked if she would buy food using their money, but she told them she was in a hurry and could not, so they asked a younger white man and he agreed, Clark said.

While the players waited for their food on a wall away from the drive-through window, they overheard the woman complain to the manager about them — and he gave the woman her food for free.

“Thanks for the free food, n-words,” the woman said as she drove off, according to Clark. “Bye n-words.”

It’s fascinating to me, that wingnuts demand African Americans tamely submit to all police requests, not resist arrest, etc, all the way also claiming that the 2nd Amendment exists so that [certain] gun owners can oppose “government tyranny”, so they can shoot government agents, and otherwise defend themselves by any means necessary.

From what I know, all evidence so far seems to suggest immunity is gained though obviously there’s no way to know at this point if the immunity is permanent or not.

There were some concerns early on when people who had recovered were still testing positive but that was apparently because there were still some inactive remnants of the virus in their system that the test was able to pick up.

COVID-19 Human Challenge Trials

Human challenge trials deliberately expose participants to infection, in order to study diseases and test vaccines or treatments. They have been used for influenza, malaria, typhoid, dengue fever, and cholera. Researchers are exploring whether human challenge trials could speed up the development of a vaccine for COVID-19, saving thousands or even millions of lives.

Another Karen.

I am huge Arizona State fan, and this has been discussed heavily on ASU-centric websites. The players all mentioned that the manager was part of the problem—that he immediately assumed the players were, in fact, harassing customers, etc.

Except for Trump didnt think it until Bolton tried to say something negative.

Oh, I bet he figured it out when he found Bolton masturbating under the desk as he fantasied about nuking Iran. If he didn’t (like everyone else) already know that.

The interesting question is, if Trump knew Bolton was insane, why did he hire him? I guess because, for Trump, being insane, incompetent or stupid is not disqualifying. Trump only fires* people because they cross him.

(* Well, except that Trump has never “fired” anyone, he doesn’t have the balls for that, he just arranges for them to retire).

Yes. Jordan Clark is at ASU largely because of the relationship between the head coach, Herm Edwards, and Ryan Clark. From the public persona of Jordan Clark and Nolan Matthews (another player involved), coupled with the consistency of all 3 of the players’ stories, the likelihood that it didn’t happen largely as reported seems really low.

(I should note that I am not implying that the 3rd player involved, T Lee, is somehow not trustworthy—he’s simply new to the team, and I haven’t read as many interviews with him).

I have one quibble with the quoted tweets:

Trump & the RNC are using it to smear millions of protestors.

How can labeling protesters with symbol the Nazis used to mark “political prisoners and people who rescued Jews” been seen as “smearing” them?

It tells us who the Republicans are. It can in no way be seen as a “smear” or dishonour to the people who are labelled with it.

I’m half Irish. It pisses me off no end when people start talking about how the Irish were slaves. Bullshit.

“Wage slavery” was a constant southern talking point pre-Civil War. Was also a basis that they were treating the actual slaves better since they got care in their old age as compared to the northern factory owners just disposing of their workers when they got old.
