Atatiana Jefferson: ‘Why I will no longer call the police’

James Smith has never wanted much to do with the police but he called them to check on his neighbour in the Texas city of Fort Worth, because it was late at night and her front door was wide open. Soon afterwards he heard a gunshot, and later saw the dead body of a 28-year-old woman, his neighbour’s daughter, carried out on a stretcher.

Well, Trump does say actual words, sort of.

I’m envisioning a time when he just turns red-faced, bangs his tiny fists on the lectern, and screeches “YAAAAAAA-WEEEEEEE-BABABABABA-NAHHHHH!”

To be followed by unpleasant squelchy noises.

They cannot abandon Trump without their entire enterprise collapsing into ruin. It would be epic, up and down the ticket. This is not saying that sticking with Trump will mean they might pull off an upset win. I think they know they are holding a losing hand and are pursuing their best option.

I was curious about this Gaetz thing and went to his Wikipedia page where I found these couple of sentences:

In June 2020, Gaetz introduced a man named Nestor whom he lives with and calls his “son”. Nestor immigrated from Cuba in 2014.

The source for this on Wikipedia is Twitter.

Is this Gaetz’s response to the BS from yesterday when twitter piled on that he defended an imaginary family in his heated exchange with Cedric Richmond (D-LA)?

A reminder: one of the few times Gaetz was on the right side of an issue was his support of Katie Hill. And he supported gay adoptions :

As a Florida state representative in 2015, Gaetz sponsored an amendment with Democratic representative David Richardson to repeal Florida’s ban on adoptions by same-sex couples.[69] He also persuaded his father, in the Florida State Senate, to support the repeal.[70]

What adoption agency would grant adoption to a single guy who’s not home most of the time, with multiple DUIs?

Not buying it.

What adoption agency would grant adoption to a single guy who’s not home most of the time, with multiple DUIs?

There are photos of Gaetz and this kid in the thread where he refers to him as a ‘House page’ and a ‘local student.’ I’m thinking more…’pool boy,’ in the Falwell sense of the word.

Background: It came out in 2017 that Ivanka communicated with cabinet members regarding government business from a private email.

The organization uncovered the messages in 2017 via a Freedom of Information Act request. But they’re receiving new attention in the wake of allegations in former national security advisor John Bolton’s upcoming book, which claims the president defended Saudi Arabia after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi to distract from the news that Ivanka Trump had been conducting government business via private email. White House Toilet Doesn’t Know If It Can Handle 4 More Years Of Trump!

WASHINGTON—Shuddering at the thought of what another term would bring, a White House toilet reportedly expressed concerns Thursday that it didn’t know if it could handle another four years of President Donald Trump. “I know I’m supposed to be apolitical and serve at the pleasure of the president, whoever it is, but I truly don’t think that I can take it if Trump wins reelection,” said the porcelain commode, explaining that it had served honorably through several administrations and had never experienced anything as unspeakable as Trump’s bowel movements. “I thought that maybe the office would change him, but if anything, he’s only gotten worse. I’m honestly surprised I’ve made it this long. Every day is such a slog. Honestly, I’m at my breaking point. Biden isn’t perfect by any means, but he’d certainly be an improvement. The sink doesn’t get what my deal is, but obviously she doesn’t understand because she’s never been used.” At press time, the White House toilet claimed to be most worried about the possibility of Trump refusing to give up the bathroom voluntarily in November.

McConnell would know that would be suicide. It backfired on FDR completely when he contemplated it in ‘38 and FDR had more political capital than they did. I’m sure McConnell has already talked him out of it and instead suggested what’s happened, a record number of unqualified federal circuit judges.

And I can imagine what happens if it’s decided that the composition of the Supreme Court is another political football to toss around based on which party is in power.

If they can legislate more Justices I assume the next step following that would be to legislate fewer - and at the same time doctor the rules on who stays on to pack it with your own partisans. Until the next majority flip where the game starts all over again.

Before the pandemic, top contractor received billions from government to help prepare the nation for biowarfare, WaPo

A long read, but worth it. This is something our knock-wood new administration needs to look into ASAP. Along with a zillion other things. Not only has this corp sucked up many anti-biowarfare solutions by buying other companies, it has become virtually the sole supplier of such to the government. It has then raised prices by multiples, and employs many lobbyists to keep themselves the sole supplier. And suddenly it has gotten a huge grant to set up a facility to produce the new COVID-19 vaccine, when available. I thought Bill Gates was doing that at his expense? Suddenly these folks get nearly a billion to do the same thing? grrrrr

Oblivious more than brazen, I think. Trump’s narcissism is such that his thoughts and especially his feelings are his only reality.

This is where nonsense like the Juneteenth stuff comes from. For Trump there is absolutely no difference between him learning a new fact (for a few seconds at least) and the entire universe learning about that.

Like, one possible creepy vector is that this is “true” but then there’s a thought process in which his “son” is around him and even becomes a page but never named his son….

The mostly likely reason that a calculation was made that Gaetz can’t be a public figure with an (R) after his name and have a close emotional bond with found family who is a young non-white man, because the implications of gay-ness and brown-ness.

I mean, that’s not a sexy scandal, but it represents something fucked up and gnarled that Gaetz would subdivide himself while the younger man takes on a bunch of roles in his proximity.

And dropping all this now is just fucking skeevy.

Fuck, I’m incredibly guarded about exposing people and I’m not any kind of famous.

But…simultaneously keeping someone around and making them part of your job and talking about them but only claiming them as “family” to make a poorly-constructed riposte in a political argument.

No buffering with irony or hyperbole, this bothers me. Whatever the actual configuration turns out to be, these are gross, unhealthy people who largely see people as means, not ends.

This.

I can’t help but think that keeping his son private/secret was more about the reaction from his Republican colleagues. Fine. We’re all pretty used to Republican hypocrisy. In Artist Adrian Brandon’s Incomplete Portraits, A Year of Life Equals One Minute of Color, This is Colossal.

When Adrian Brandon starts to color a portrait, he sets a timer. For his rendering of Breonna Taylor, the clock is set to 26 minutes—for George Floyd, 46 minutes, for Tony McDade, 38, and for Aiyana Stanley Jones, just seven. “When the alarm sounds, I am hit with a wave of emotions ranging from anger, to deep sadness, to hopelessness, to feeling lucky that I am still here,” he says.

The Brooklyn-based artist is working on Stolen, a series of partially filled-in depictions of Black people murdered by police. Each portrait remains incomplete as Brandon only colors one minute for each year of the subject’s life before it was cut short. …

The original source story is still up:
Trump: Mideast Explosion Could Destroy OPEC, Lower Oil Prices

He also complains that the United States is a “laughing stock” throughout the world — and confirms that he is seriously considering running for president in 2012.

Asked directly about a possible run, Trump tells Newsmax: “I’m thinking about it. I’m looking at what’s happening with this country and frankly, it’s very sad. I see what’s happening left and right, how we’re being abused by other nations, and I don’t like it. I don’t like what’s happening with jobs. I am seriously thinking about it.”

Trump says if he does run it will be as a Republican and not as a third party candidate, and explains why he would run.

The greatest self-own of all time is provisionally assigned to Trump, for winning the presidency in 2016.

Trump keeping his poor health in the news. According to the White House website, the speech was about 30 minutes. He was at West Point for a total of 3 hour (from touchdown to liftoff) according to the presidential daily schedule. According to Weather Underground, the high that day was 73 and it was partly cloudy.

In a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, President Donald Trump went out of his way, unprompted, to defend himself for struggling to walk down a ramp after the commencement address at West Point, a moment that led to widespread mockery and speculation about his physical health.

“So I’m going to go real easy. So I did. And then the last 10 feet I ran down,” said Trump. “They always stop it just before I ran, they always stop it. So, I spent three hours between speeches and saluting people and they end up, all they talked about is ramp … If you would have seen this ramp, it was like an ice skating rink. So I’m the only one that can happen.”

“I mean, here I spent three hours on stage, the sun pouring in and I saluted 1,106 cadets, and that’s not easy,” Trump added. “Even the general said, That’s amazing. Other presidents would never have been able to do it. Because usually they do the first 10. They do 10 honor rolls, and then they go home. I stayed there for hours. And what do I do? I get publicity about walking down a ramp. And does he have Parkinson’s? I don’t think so.” Source: Raw Story

Maybe I’m being unfair. If Matt Gaetz is gay and his relationship with this young man started when Nestor was of legal age, then Matt doesn’t deserve many of the attacks he’s being subjected to. It’s certainly difficult being a closeted Republican; in his district it’s probably enough to get you primaried. Perhaps it’s enough to lose the November election against a Democrat.

I mean if part of his past drunken behavior is because he’s in the closet? Then I honestly do feel a little bad for him but he’s been one of the most obnoxious pricks in his party’s caucus exempting his stopped clock moment defending Rep Hill which I think is counterbalanced by his acting like a complete shithead about the masks and Covid in general. Plus look at how he originally used this. He used his Cuban-American whatever Nestor really is to him to dismiss a criticism of him being racist which is complete clownshit.

WASHINGTON — Justin Walker epitomizes the conservative judicial project. He became a federal judge at 37 with no trial experience and sterling right-wing credentials. Eight months later, he has been promoted to the powerful U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, a frequent feeder to the Supreme Court.

Walker’s confirmation Thursday by a Senate vote of 51 to 42 puts President Donald Trump one shy of his 200th judicial confirmation, which is teed up for next week. It’s a number not achieved by any president at this stage in four decades. Source: NBC News

This ultimately will be a big part of Trump’s legacy and it’s going to be with me for the rest of my life. So many of these judges are unqualified or simply the worst of right wing hacks or of course a lot of both in Walker here. It will though be interesting since Justice Roberts, a Bush appointee did notably rebuff Justice Kavanaugh, a Trump appointee in the DACA decision so maybe some these guys will find themselves a minority in the federal judiciary. I’m definitely intrigued by what Biden will do with the judiciary.

My sister lived next to a cop in Chicago. He invited her to a bar he regularly attended, and even though they didn’t date, she was welcomed there when she went. I went with her a couple of times. It’s pretty great to be a white guy with an “in”; you hear the kind of shit you would imagine hearing. The neighbor one day was headed to his shift as I was trying to start my truck, which clearly needed a jump. He pulled right over and gave me a charge. It was a day that protesters were out (can’t remember why). The marchers were led by a police vehicle. Neighbor told me about the firepower the cop in the rear of the SUV had and said, “I’d love to mow those fuckers down.” See—nice!

re: #362 NO SMOCKING GUN!

It really is as though the last 4 years have been written as a very dark comedy. Utterly surreal.

Yeah I mean I laugh at Trump’s ignorance as much as the rest. Just last night, I laughed about the Finland and Russia thing that came out of Bolton’s book. But it’s also got me thinking about how much damage has he done to our reputation abroad? How much leverage has he given tyrants like Erodgan, Xi, or Putin? The story that he was willing to drop charges against the Erodgan linked guys was alarming to me because it illustrates to me how Trump sees both foreign policy and the federal criminal justice system. He thinks foreign policy is all “deals” and that the federal prosecutors work for simply for him. This man. He has no concept of American liberal democracy. I think that really is what separates him from what other including some really bad Republican presidents like Nixon, Reagan, and Bush.

re: #363 Teddy’s Person

I think Trump is the culmination of two specific attitudes toward government and the presidency promoted by Republicans (and too many Democrats). The government should be run like a business and the idea that the president has to be someone you’d grab a beer with.

I see Trumpism more as the natural end-point of movement conservatism as a whole. For example, there is no pathology in Trump that is not dominant in the Republican Party.

Casual malice, bigotry, aggressive stupidity, endemic corruption, seeking power only to rule, and total commitment to lying as the only form of political communication are all as distinctive for Republicans as they are defining for Trump.

I’ll add that I’d love to have a beer with Obama. Not because he’s some ordinary Joe but because smart men turn me on.

He’s definitely someone I’d like to talk to about heavy things in a relaxed setting myself.

re: #361 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

Is that seriously what the problem was?

I don’t know exactly what was the offensive part and Google doesn’t tell you, because they want it to be as fucking stressful as possible, I guess. But I didn’t change anything in the post, just turned off the display of comments, and they lifted the violation pretty quickly.

I suspect it was the “Fuck Trump” comments because those would be right at the top, but I don’t know for sure. All I know is the comments were the reason for the policy violation.

It’s total fucking bullshit is what it is. And it’s listed as “MUST FIX,” so I’d have to remove all the ad code just for that page if I wanted it to keep it intact and show the comments. Which would be a problem because that post was actually generating more traffic than usual right then, and that’s probably why they flagged it.

This comes on top of recent payout cuts that have reduced the ad revenue here by a factor of 10. Seriously. It’s almost not worth it to deal with this kind of crap from these autocratic Silicon Valley fuckheads.

Yeah I’ve heard both of those for a long time. Romney was fond of echoing the former and W Bush was the poster child for the latter. I think government has a positive role to play in our greater society. The big problem with Trumpism is I think this rise of cult of personality in American politics. Obviously it’s not new but it’s the “Me alone” attitude that Trump promoted and to another extent it’s what greatly alienated me about Sanders’ style of campaign too. I really like that Biden is a career legislator. He understands how important the independence of the branches of government are to each other. I always thought that separation of powers was among the Founders’ greatest legacy. But tbh with Trump, I don’t even get what’s likable about him. Bush I could see it. And I never thought Romney’s business experience was practical to running a country. Running a country is totally different than running a business. I hope I enver hear that again after Trump “businessman” and W Bush (MBA) have led the nation to two recessions.

I think it’s this ever increasing of executive power that has happened over the years since 9/11 along with Obama’s win I think was this huge shocker to conservative America. I mean I know a lot rank and file Republicans never really liked McCain that much but Obama beating him and then Obama winning again. Obama’s only the second Democrat ever to get 50% of the vote both times guys. He won and he won impressively. I think if anything defines Obama-Biden style liberalism, it’s an openness to people that have not been in our society. Obama is by far the most liberal president we’ve ever had on nonbelievers, religious minorities, LGBT people, etc. And I think that legacy continues with Joe.

Yeah, but if one thing a Trump Presidency has taught us, it’s that this is considered a bug, not a feature (or in some cases “fatal error”) to a lot more of the electorate than we would like to think.

I worked at the IRS in the 1990s, and upper management certainly thought they could run the place like a business. One way this manifested was in the procurement process. Basically, they didn’t want to follow the rules. One day a couple of colleagues roped me into helping them with some procurement paperwork for their project. They wanted to award a no-bid contract to a company that was courting our director. I filled out and printed the forms then handed them to my colleagues. They looked over the paperwork and told me I needed to sign it. There was a statement that said the signing party vouched for the information and explanation of why this should be a no-bid contract. I told them I wouldn’t sign it because I didn’t think it was true. They stomped off in a huff but really couldn’t argue with me.

Who do you is the most likely cannibal in the GOP caucus? Louie Gohmert looks to me the type that would be curious to try human flesh.

He’s a pretty good candidate but whoever it is would simply be continuing an old Republican tradition, as evinced by renowned 19th century Colorado cannibal Alferd Packer:

“Legend has it that Judge Melville B. Gerry of Lake City , a Democrat, pronounced sentence upon Packer this way: ‘You voracious man-eating son of a bitch, there was seven Democrats in Hinsdale County and you ate five of them. God damn you! I sentence you to be hanged by the neck until you are dead, Dead, DEAD, as a warning against reducing the Democratic population of Hinsdale County. Packer, you Republican cannibal, I would sentence you to Hell but the statutes forbid it.’”

Alas, the story appears to be just a legend, but it’s a fact that there are still very few Democrats in Hinsdale County.
