Playbook: “Not only is the topline of the latest Fox News national poll troubling for President Trump — he’s down 12 — but if you dig deeper, you see that Trump is leading Joe Biden by only 9 points among rural voters. In 2016, Trump won that segment of the population by nearly 30 points

That could make Texas winnable.

I am bringing this forward, not because I am any kind of an expert, but because I think it is an important discussion to have:

re: #219 Eclectic Cyborg

If the police are defunded, how do the laws get enforced?

I’m asking a serious question here. I’m not quite sure how this works.

From what I am reading, it goes like this. Police are drastically downsized and are only used to respond to serious crimes. The funding goes to other groups, who are the people you call when someone has a mental health crisis, or for minor/nonviolent crimes, or for accidents.

Ideally, you dissolve your current police department (killing the police union) and lease state cops while you gear up.

A reddish state is winnable only if people are allowed to vote — and the GOP is going to use every dirty trick in their box to suppress and disenfranchise voters. Never forget the Texas woman who was sentenced to 5 years in prison because she mistakenly thought she was eligible to vote.

GOP delenda est.

So they have to figure out a way to separate the rural voters that voted for Trump in 2016 but aren’t going to vote for him now. Because if they try to restrict rural voting in most of the state, then it’ll only leave urban and suburban voters, and he will lose Texas.

Correct. And we saw some signs in Texas in 2018. Beto didn’t win but he did flip a few Congressional seats.

Georgia, yes: seemingly a metric fuckton of pissed-off Democrats down there; but Texas?
Sorry, just can’t see it: if Biden maintains a polling position anywhere near the chance of a win, the TX GOP is likely to pull out all the stops (and they are BIG stops in Texas!) to pull out a victory - even if narrowly - probably by:
A) Massive GOP GOTV efforts.
B) Equally massive vote-suppression initiatives anywhere any Democrats might have a remote chance of prevailing.
C) Pulling out and dusting off LBJ’s old playbooks for ballot-box fuckery.

They’ve already done that damage in 2016 and 2018. Any more efforts will end up hurting areas with significant Republican votes. And right now, Democrats are willing to stand in line for hours.

Say that the impossible happens though, and somehow Texas does go blue on Election Day. Republicans losing their biggest (and it isn’t even close) stronghold would have seismic effects on the party as a whole. Do they go all-in with attempts of wholesale disenfranchisement even in the face of a voting public turning against them in massive numbers, or do they finally have a self-reflection and jettison the racist faction of the party to try to win back the center?

That’s a great question. Honestly I don’t know what’s going to happen with them if and I think when Trump loses. The party still doesn’t get it here in Virginia and recently nominated a big RWNJ in the 5th district (that’s Charlottesville and a pretty big area outside of it) because the incumbent Republican Congressman officiated a same sex marriage. The incumbent Riggleman, no moderate but he got booted out because he accepts Obergefell.

“Self-reflection”? For Republicans? For TEXAS Republicans?? Surely you jest…..*

Actually, as long as we’re juggling fantasy scenarios, I’m guessing that if TX goes for Joe, it will be by a narrow margin**, and only on a statewide level: I’m thinking Cornyn will certainly be returned to the Senate (more’s the pity), and the GOP are likely to lose few Congressional (or statehouse) seats. They will still be around, still have their base, and still have more money than God to spend on political influence***. A more likely outcome would be for them to double down on the fearmongering, racism and religious nuttery and make sure nothing like a Biden win ever happens again.

If Biden wins Texas, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Democrats win the Texas House. Because of 2018, Republicans don’t have a supermajority in the chamber anyway, which limited what they could pass last year.

The NBA’s plan for restarting:

The NBA plans to use smart technologies to protect players and staff from the coronavirus as 22 teams prepare to play games at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando. In addition to subjecting players to extensive testing, quarantining them from their families, and imposing strict rules for social behavior, each will be given a “smart” ring, a Disney MagicBand, an individual pulse oximeter, and a smart thermometer. Oura’s titanium rings can measure body temperature, respiratory functions, and heart rate and predict Covid-19 symptoms up to three days in advance with 90% accuracy. The MagicBand will act as a hotel room key, allow players to check in at security checkpoints and coronavirus screenings, and help with contact tracing. The league also is considering a small device that will set off an audio alert when the wearer is within six feet of another person for longer than five seconds.

Unlike COVID-19, untreated HIV is 100% lethal, except for the few who are genetically immune. For years, it was a literal death sentence. HIV does take longer to kill its victims and it is not airborne but it is still it is an extremely deadly retrovirus. Ultimately it is likely that HIV will have killed more people worldwide than COVID-19, but we will have to wait and see.

Been watching The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I have not watched it in its entirety in possibly 50 years. It is a great movie, better than I remembered, with a renowned cast and beautiful location photography, including the street scenes in Tampico. It is a good enough Bogart vehicle, but Walter Huston’s Howard is one of the all time great movie characters. “B” western regular Tim Holt is great too as the conflicted but stalwartly sane half of the Bogie-Holt partner duo, something that only becomes apparent as the plot progresses. Alfonso Bedoya achieved legendary status as bandit leader “Gold Hat,” Mr. “Stinking Badges” himself. Really great way to spend an afternoon. It is very much in the high adventure tradition, but with a warning that high adventure can, and regularly does, go dreadfully wrong.

* I apologize for calling you Shirley
** 87 votes would be quite appropriate
*** DISCLAIMER: no expert on TX politics: clarification will be appreciated

it’s all moot. the party isn’t going to change until its current part of the electorate dies off. they can have as many post election autopsies as they want. as long as their voter base is mostly people with confederate flags in cement-filled tires in pick-up beds, they aren’t changing.

As evidence for this, I can say that CA Republicans becoming completely irrelevant in CA for state-level races has had absolutely no moderating effect on the CA republican party.

CA Republicans are just as stupid and fuckwitted as any Republicans in the nation, they just aren’t numerous enough to fuck up the state.

As far as I can tell, the CA Republican party is absolutely consumed with fever dreams where the Democrats will somehow fail so catastrophically that the voters of CA will turn over all political power to unwashed, stinking, inbred, willfully stupid, CA Republican morons, forever.

Aw, Greg. It sucks to have people laughing at you behind your back!

The conservative advocacy group Empower Texans accidentally published audio of two of their members mocking Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), who is paralyzed below the waist and uses a wheelchair.

Ironically, this is the same group that weaponized a recording once before — in June of 2019, Empower Texans president Michael Quinn Sullivan clandestinely recorded the Texas House Speaker, and ultimately forced him to drop his reelection bid.

This time, the recording of the comments was seemingly accidentally distributed with the podcast the group puts out, called Texas Scorecard Radio.

The audio, first spotted by the local Quorum Report, captures Cary Cheshire, vice president of Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, which is under the Empower Texans umbrella, and Tony McDonald, general counsel for Empower Texans, discussing their dislike of Abbott.

Is Donald Trump More Dangerous Than Roy Cohn? The Rosenbergs’ Granddaughter Says Yes
Ivy Meeropol, whose grandparents were executed partly because of Cohn, tells Vanity Fair why she revisited a painful chapter of her family’s history for a new HBO documentary. by Julie Miller, Vanity Fair

Putting the relationship in My Fair Lady terms, Meeropol explained, “I’ve been thinking about Cohn as the Henry Higgins to Donald Trump’s Eliza Doolittle.” When they met in the 1970s, Trump was a brash, insecure developer from Queens with no cachet in Manhattan. Cohn was smooth and confident, with society hookups and mob connections. “I think Trump was really drawn to that tough-guy image and was more than willing to break the rules, just like Cohn was,” said Meeropol.

As for Cohn’s motivations in grooming Trump, Meeropol explained, “Trump had money, and Cohn made sure to surround himself with people with a lot more money than he had.” Through her interviews Meeropol learned that the closeted Cohn also “had a penchant for the Aryan look, as [author] Peter Manso described it. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some bit of a crush or attraction, at least on Cohn’s part, for Donald Trump. I’m sure Trump would hate to hear that. But I believe that.”

Don’t know how many people did that.

Less than 200 polling places will be open for voters in Kentucky’s primary Tuesday, down from 3,700 in a typical election year. Amid a huge influx in requests for mail-in ballots, some voters still had not received theirs days before they must be turned in. And turnout is expected to be higher than in past primaries because of a suddenly competitive fight for the Democratic Senate nomination,” the Washington Post reports.

“The scenario has voting-rights advocates and some local elections officials worried that the state is careening toward a messy day marked by long lines and frustrated voters — similar to the scenes that have played out repeatedly this spring as the novel coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the 2020 primaries

During the overnight hours of June 18, 2020, Z’s Catfish Cafe, located at 127 Kenway Drive in Rockwall was damaged when an unknown vehicle drove into the front of the business. The suspect vehicle then backed out of the location and fled the scene. Z’s Cafe is a local, black-owned business and we are sensitive to the timing of the incident although we cannot identify a motive for this offense at this point. We are working to develop suspect information and detectives are canvassing the area. Don’t forget about the two Karens who accused the Scottsboro Boys of rape.

Ida B. Wells had Karen’s number in 1892.

“Nobody in this section of the country believes the old threadbare lie that black men rape white women.” ~ Ida B. Wells

I don’t follow Andrew Sullivan like at all, but why would anyone have to choose between HIV and Covid?

One is 100% preventable - the other is not.

I have never seen him laugh. Not once.

A former bodyguard said he saw Trump laugh once, when his limousine ran over a puppy on Park Avenue.

Do you have his Tiffany Aching series?

Crivens! It’s our wee great hag!

It’s lovely.

One of my favorite sub-sets of the series. I was buying those for my niece when she was younger as gifts.

re: #247 Charles Johnson

Have to admit, when he had The Dish and admitted he was wrong about the Iraq War, called Bush out on torture, and had a change of opinion after hearing from women who had divulged their decisions for 2nd or 3rd trimester abortions, I thought Andrew Sullivan had evolved.

I had previously remembered him from his earlier, far more conservative days, through appearances on C-SPAN. His biggest controversy at that time was mainstream media coverage about his advertisement for HIV-positive sex.

But I also remember seeing him on Bill Maher (another dumbass fucker) trashing Kennedy. And then he began to re-litigate his defense of Charles Murray. That’s when I began to understand that he is nothing more than an egotistical, racist, classicist queen

The funny thing is he had plenty of links to other media - both conservative and liberal. I can’t be sure, but I think that is how I found my way to this site. Charles may - and should - correct me if I am wrong. Maybe a link was on there before the realization that Republicans had become young earth creationists.

Regardless, I am glad to be here, instead of having to read Andrew’s drivel. He had his chance in the late 2000s and early 2010s. But he has totally pissed that shit away.
