LIVE: President Trump’s Poorly Attended Festival of Hate and Disease

Attendance is much lower than the 97 million promised by Trump and his campaign flack Brad Parscale (who’s so fired), and the Trump gang is already floating excuses, blaming it on — you guessed it — “radical protesters” blocking the hordes from entering.

They might have to go out and beg the banned protestors to come in fill some seats.

How about using all those national guard troops to just force people into the arena.

Reminds me of the Mark Lester ‘Three Musketeers’, a scene where Cardinal Richelieu is riding by in a carriage, and the Cardinal’s men are handing out little flags to wave just ahead of him arriving.

CNN reporting that Air Force One tried to do a low-level fly over to the big crowd waiting for him outside the BOK center. The problem is…. there are only a half-dozen people there.

They should have flooded the area so they could have at least made self aggrandizing comparisons to Bush flying over New Orleans.

I think the point is to establish a story that specifically overwrites reality but is emotionally satisfying. There is no interest in describing reality, separate from what it provides gratification.

Trump as a narcissistic abuser is ultimately telling stories to soothe and titillate himself, but his audience is of a similar mindset so they travel along. They want to superficially play at victimhood so that their abusive behavior is self defense, hoping for a day when they’ve sufficient battered everyone that contradicts this pretend-play that they can make it true.

re: #65 The Ghost of a Flea

Since truth is just an expression of power, part of the power fantasy is that you can confess to something unforgiveable but then simply pretend you never confessed or that the confession means you did a bad thing.

I think that’s the entire core of Trumpism: his people like the idea that power exists to be abused but they are high enough in the vague-but-inherent hierarchy that they should never suffer from abuse of power. They aspire to have more access to abuse of power, delight in the suffering of people they view as downstream. They’re so intoxicated by this idea that they can’t conceive that they’re being abused by people that see them as the inferior kind, but they see as compatriots…and when that abuse inevitably happens they invent a way that the people they are hurting are actually the persecutors.

There’s always a West Wing episode. In one episode, advisors to Pres. Bartlett wanted him to come out supporting an amendment to ban flag burning. Bartlett’s response was is there an outbreak of flag burning that I’m not aware of.

It was the original mean lefty professor meme. I’ve never felt like burning a flag to express my displeasure politically. I think you have the right to do it but there are better ways. But man do wingers love it as a wedge issue.

There’s been a lot of talk about seniors, white men, suburban women and other demographics shifting to Biden, and while those all are very important, I’ve become increasingly concerned with Trump’s overwhelming lead with empty seats, which seems to be only increasing. They are turning out in droves at TrumpKlan rallies.

Unless Biden can close the gap in the empty seat demographic, he may be in a lot of trouble

206
teleskiguy  Jun 20, 2020 • 7:11:02pm

This rally is a major narcissistic injury for Fuckface Von Clownstick, bigly. He saw all those empty seats. Not once did he brag about filling the arena to capacity or how there were thousands of people that couldn’t get in outside, which is a staple of these Klan rallies. He’s wounded. The high he got from the rally won’t last long. If I were Brad Parscale I’d start padding that résumé, or take all those ill gotten gains and maybe move to a dacha outside Sochi.

José Millán-Astray (1879-1954), founder of the Spanish Legion, was a noted lunatic and enthusiastic fascist. He was assisted at the beginning by none other than then-Major Francisco Franco. Franco made his reputation leading the Legion during the very difficult campaigns in Morocco in the 1920s. Extremely, er, flamboyant uniforms were Millan-Astray’s idea. The cut and style has changed over the years but the theme has remained the same.

If I were Brad Parscale I’d start padding that résumé, or take all those ill gotten gains and maybe move to a windowless dacha outside Sochi.

The other thing is, he keeps saying it, in different ways, that he resents the testing because it reveals how many cases there are. No testing, and 120,000 people die, but nobody points the finger at him. This is not only obviously insane, but makes it clear that the ONLY way he sees this is in terms of how it affects him.

One of the things I bought while preparing for the Corona-virus lockdown was a container of powdered goat’s milk. I haven’t had any as milk yet (reviews say that it doesn’t dissolve well in cold water), but I’ve adding a couple of spoonfuls when I make Swiss Miss hot chocolate. To me, it’s a tasty combo.

This is an excellent example of the general bullshit trend in which media commentators are poetry critics discussing aesthetics, but only a specific kind of aesthetic they find gratifying and thus deign to present as Truth.

Is “Rosie” more passionate than the people who stood in line nearly a whole day to vote, specifically trying to use their franchise as their adversaries close polling stations to game the system? So why is she emblematic of something and they’re not?

She isn’t.

The far more likely way this woman matters is that she has full franchise and representation where she lives, so her “passion” is not stymied by being cheated by a variety of systems designed to render her vote insignificant or simply keep her from ever voting.

But the project of Project Lincoln isn’t to accurately describe how fucked up the country is, or how long it’s been fucked up. It’s project is to sell how effective Project Lincoln’s messaging is and how ineffective anything done by liberals and leftists is. The individual agoniste of Rosie can be turned into a little ding about “passion”—a meaningless aestheticized framing of what’s basically a sick person voting against their own best interest because of fears fostered by a pervasive and malicious culture that preceded Trump but created the loam in which he grows.

Trump is embarrassing to conservatism because he demonstrates what conservatism relies on to get elected. He is being attacked because he is an authentic expression of the culture conservatism is built on; he says things outright and performs only the most perfunctory of disavowals, breaking with a style of coded language and careful prevarication built over half a century. For that he must be attacked.

…but Trump is a creature of optics and empty symbols just as his conservative predecessors were, and they can’t help but admiring his ability to stir people up over nothing, to no end, because that’s what their jobs were until their conservative fanfiction was overrun by Trumpian fanfiction. If there was no empty emotionality, if politicians were judged by functional competence and not by grand narratives, they’d have no jobs because they’re just advertising agents that turn shitty people into brands.

Bear all that in mind when they say something like this:

I take your point, but Rachel Bitecofer is a Democrat, not a Never-Trump GOPer. And her broader point is that Democratic enthusiasm this year is driven far more by fury at trump than fondness for Biden - and she, contrary to many of the never-trumpers she’s currently working with, advocates he choose a running mate who appeals to the progressive base, not a “we dare not offend the midwest” moderate.

So what if Joe Biden doesn’t have (or has fewer) crank cultist groupies willing to camp out on the street for days for a glimpse in person? Rosie can still only cast one vote, and it’s the aggregate of voters that count, regardless of the level of individual motIvation. Years ago, when The Bell Curve was initially published, a colleague with a PhD in mathematics and I discussed the book and I recall his railing against the shoddy work within the text. Sullivan wanted to believe and he still does because it reinforced his existing Tory prejudices — he’s a racist and misogynist.

Again, the broader point (though I suspect no one here really disputes this) is that trump cultists, unimpeded by greasy GOPer voter suppression tactics, are guaranteed to turn out no matter what their Dear Leader does. Therefore, Dems need overwhelming turnout to win (since they have to overcome not only the cultists’ devotion, but the aforementioned greasy GOPer voter suppression tactics).

According to @axios’s @jonathanvswan, who interviewed President Trump yesterday, and has been speaking with campaign sources, “There’s a scramble to figure out what happened.”

If you don’t charge for tickets, people are less likely to attend an event if there is any possible obstacle. And free tickets allow for mischief by those who are in opposition to the happening.

In this case, the base had two reasons to stay home

1. The fear that they wouldn’t get in because the facility was overbooked. It wasn’t worth waiting in line when there was a good chance they couldn’t get into the main arena anyway. No one had any clues as to the real number of interested parties.
2. Covid-19. The saner supporters weren’t going to attend an indoor arena where masks were discouraged. The locals were certainly aware of the concerns promoted by health professionals who wanted the rally to be cancelled.

re: #346 Hecuba’s daughter

My favorite tweet in response to Eichenwald essentially made the point that Brad Parscale did not get the database of Trump supporters he thought he was building. Others here had mentioned days ago that was the point of the huge number of tickets they were providing.

Not if they scanned the people that showed. But so what, if most are form OK, he’s going to win that state anyway.

The case is that trump is really good at fucking himself.

But the people who showed would have shown up without the online ticket giveaway. They didnt gain any people who were not already committed.

Heath, one of the small towns adjacent to Rockwall where my son’s high school is, had one of its police officers test positive for Covid-19. Because of that, the officer and 4 others are quarantined at a hotel in Royse City. They problem they’re having is getting food to them (paid for by someone in in Heath), so they’re asking for volunteers to pick up food and drinks and deliver them to the hotel.

I would love to do that kind of flying, hard and risky though it is.

I care about some statues.

If anybody were to put even the tiniest chip in the Winged Victory of Samathrace, imma cut a bitch. And that guy who took a hammer to one of Michelangelo’s Pietas? I’d have given him the death penalty.

And the David!! Don’t anybody touch my little-dick David.

re: #324 Hecuba’s daughter

Years ago, when The Bell Curve was initially published, a colleague with a PhD in mathematics and I discussed the book and I recall his railing against the shoddy work within the text. We both had read it out of curiosity and found it very underwhelming and detestable. Sullivan wanted to believe and he still does because it reinforced his existing Tory prejudices — he’s a racist and misogynist.

I remember the reviews by capable people when it came out. “More in sorrow than in anger,” but the same judgment.

Good. I started to download it, and then just said, fuck it, the interesting bits will get posted and I won’t waste my time on it! It just is depressing, that this is what we’ve come to.

It’s sad that the Kindle-formatted version of the book disappeared from the last thread. But I suspect that given the judge’s comments that Bolton won’t earn a dime from the publication due to his alleged-NDA violation, it’ll be available in all formats - even in braille.
