“Voted illegally” apparently means “moved, died, or possibly changed their name” while not getting updated/removed on the voter rolls. Also, that was apparently just in LA county.

From what I understand, one of the reasons voter turnout in the US is so low is because we do a pretty shit job of keeping voter rolls up to date. I think in California if you move from one county to another and register in the new county, your info in the old county might not get updated.

Just remember everyone…

KY went to a no-excuse absentee ballot and early vote election for the primaries this year, strictly to avoid spread of COVID-19 at polling places. This has been in the works since March. Everyone was encouraged to apply for an absentee ballot, and had until about a week ago to do so. When the decision to reduce polling places was made, we were in the depths of the pandemic, and not considering “opening up”. Now, a move to basically a mail in election is not just something that can be done easy, and there are going to be unintended consequences, but it is disingenuous for people to claim this was specific voter suppression. There are other types of voter suppression in the state, but this was not intentionally one of them.

re: #13 Ace Rothstein

Uh, no. The US Constitution is weird in certain spots and one of those oddball things happens to be that the President and Vice-President can’t be from the same state. This is why Dick Cheney had a rented hotel room in Wyoming as his “home” all the time he was actually living in the Observatory during George Bush’s Presidency. GWB’s “home” was in Crawford, Texas and that’s where he voted, same as Cheney voted in Wyoming. Of course being busy people they used mail-in ballots rather than turn up at a polling site in person. I expect President Obama and the First Lady did the same, probably casting their votes in the Illinois contests.

It’s the same for a lot of folks in the US, where they are registered to vote isn’t where they live some or even most of the time — students, for example. Further afield a US marine on deployment to Okinawa isn’t a Japanese resident, they are registered to vote in their home state in the US.

In UK General elections it’s a big Press event when the Prime Minister or leader of an opposition party turns up at the polling station in their constituency to cast their vote. They usually make a point of doing so rather than voting by mail-in ballot, in part because the polling station is in the constituency they directly represent in Parliament.

Two things:
1. Technically the President and VP can be from the same state. The problem is that the electors from that state cannot vote for both of them. Electors from other states don’t have that limitation. So it’s a practical not a legal limitation.
2. It’s not unusual for young people to move to apartments elsewhere, but continue to vote from their parents’ address. Sometimes it’s because they are more familiar with the people/issues at their old home or maybe their new place is really temporary and they aren’t sure where they will ultimately end up. So it’s simpler to retain the original polling site.

He didn’t sign with the Rays till February of this year.

McEnany cast votes in 2018 from her parents’ address in Tampa, Fla., according to the report. The Republican owned a home less than two miles away, and she also lived in Washington at the time. The same year, McEnany’s car registration and driver’s license were linked to an address in Edgewater, N.J. The state only grants those documents to people who prove residency.

Trump’s press secretary has voted by mail in every Florida election in which she has participated — 11 times in the last decade.

Somehow, some way, we need to break this “us vs. them” mindset that has festered in the political world for generations. If we continue to make our political platform “the other guys are bad”, we are going to continue to get guys like Donald J. Trump, both left and right.

…BREAKING 2 OF 3 I have multiple sources at DOH who have just told me they have been instructed this week to change the numbers and begin slowly deleting deaths and cases so it looks like Florida is improving next week in the leadup to July 4, like they’ve “made it over the hump.”…

As Trump said, if you don’t count cases, there is no disease. People will die but deaths will be attributed to other causes. That is what terrifies me: with Trump’s encouragement, red states will conceal cases and deaths and pretend there is no problem. Trump and his governors will lie and the lackey journalists will not do the work to uncover the truth, either because it’s too hard or they may not have the financial resources to pursue the information. This isn’t the black death where it was impossible to hide the plague, because so many perished. Or 1918 where the victims were primarily younger and in good health. The victims here are predominantly elderly and minorities — and that could lead to the press moving on, especially when Trump provides additional distractions and new shiny objects to attract their attention.

As we all know, conservatives don’t really care about anything unless it affects them personally. Only if they actually lose loved ones, will they care about this disease.

re: #194 Hecuba’s daughter

If

It is affecting older people but younger people are dying. And the first wave of the 1918 flu affected older people; it was the second wave that hit the young adults. We don’t know what’s coming, though scientists have noticed that two strains have evolved to be easier to infect cells.

And people will know when someone around them dies of it.

According to the emails I get from Next Door, there are at least three threads in my town about the need to wear masks. Even a majority of Republicans think people should be wearing their masks. As frustrating as it is, there are lots of people who know that this is not a disease to be toyed with, and Trump and GOP governors’ attempts to hide that aren’t going to work. There are a lot of people that seem to need to get sick in order for it to be an issue for them, but there are plenty that are taking it seriously. It’s probably why it looks like so many people aren’t wearing masks: Those of us that are are also minimizing what we do, leaving mainly those who don’t wear them.

Faster than a speeding snail, stronger than a limp noodle, able to leap a Cheeto in a single bound, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… no, there’s no way anyone could mistake that fat orange fuck for anything else.

That… Is just a beautiful thing. Standing O.

Here’s the problem: Most of the folks who are opposed to masks are also selfish tossers whose only concern is if the mask protects them. Since non-medical masks are more about keeping others from catching what you have than about stopping you from getting sick, they think it’s a waste and would rather feel “comfortable” instead. That whole “social contract” business and the idea of caring for others? It doesn’t matter to them as much as how sweaty their face gets under that mask.

I don’t even think it’s that, or the whole “TYRANNY!!!!” thing. These people don’t have the capacity for that kind of thinking. The ones around here are simply embarrassed to be seen with one. That’s how vain they are. Same thing with trump.

Oh, I’d certainly agree. Most everything you hear about “freedom” or “they’re not effective” or “they’re dangerous to your health”? It’s BS they glomp onto as an excuse for their refusal to wear one because it’s “uncomfortable.”

Not even sure it’s about physical unease, even. I think it’s about shame because they see admission of vulnerability as weakness.

Also on the mask-wearing front — if you walk the streets of my town, you’ll see quite a few unmasked people. On the less trafficked streets, where it’s easy to keep your distance. Not on more crowded streets. And certainly not inside commercial areas.

And around here they’re mostly stupid or oblivious or just garden variety assholes (hard to tell the locals from the terrorourists.) Like the 30-something guy I saw at the store with his 5-ish year old little girl. She had a mask on but he didn’t. What fucking message does that send?

Just one: from just-updated results, it seems like Carolyn Maloney (my Rep, btw) is going to pull out the win. But Yep, it appears Eliot Engel is heading for retirement in NY-16. Only 20% reported, but way behind.

Better yet, explain how you can claim to care about human rights when you agreed to withhold sanctions on China for operating concentration camps in order to avoid trade talks falling apart.
