President Trump’s speech Saturday night in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a toxic stream of consciousness that ignored a great opportunity to speak words of healing and unity to a divided nation.

His remarks, which lasted nearly two hours, were full of self-justifications and salted with crude language. He called one person “a son of a bitch.” Let’s hear his evangelical supporters defend that language, along with his frequent references to “Hell “and helluva.”

I have heard all the explanations. It’s who he is. His policies are more important. He’s God’s chosen instrument.

Mr. Thomas is even making some of the arguments liberals made over the Coronapalooza in Tulsa.

Then he demonstrated how he slowly walked down a ramp after the address because he said the bottoms of his shoes were slippery, as was the ramp, and if he had fallen the media would have been all over him.

How does any of this matter? He made as many, or more, first-person references as President Obama often did for which Trump and others criticized him.

I was embarrassed for him and for his smaller-than-predicted audience, which worshipfully, but I sensed a little less enthusiastically, applauded.

Yes, many of those “one million” ticket requesters (according to the Trump campaign) were probably reluctant to show up because of what some consider nonstop media scare tactics about the coronavirus and the dire warnings from health officials about mass gatherings. Another factor may have been the president’s predictability. We’ve heard versions of this speech before.

An Omaha high school alumnus is seeking to get the name of her high school renamed. It is named after an arch-segregationist superintendent of schools in Omaha; the school district was only desegregated in 1975.

(Jim Crow wasn’t just a southern thing as people here know, and holy fuqueballs I was already in high school myself in Michigan when Omaha was still segregating schools.)

Burke High grad seeks to rename school because of namesake’s past (Goes to the Omaha World-Herald, more at the link):

[Harry A.] Burke led what’s now called the Omaha Public Schools from 1946 to 1962 — an era before the district was forced to integrate in the mid-1970s after seven black parents successfully sued for the right to send their children to integrated schools.

Further down in the article giving the history of Dr. Burke’s tenure as superintendent, he was being called out as a white supremacist in Omaha’s newspapers all the way back in 1947.

Testimony about his segregation practices were the subject of hearings, wherein it was noted he hired white teachers with no degrees over black teachers with college degrees. School district policy at the time said the most qualified candidate had to be hired.

He died in office in 1962, and Burke High School was built and dedicated in 1967.

Federal oversight of Omaha’s integration programme including busing ended in 2002.

The Douglas County Commission (Omaha and rural areas in the west of the county) set aside $6.2 million dollars to be used for a mass-vaccination programme when a Covid-19 vaccine becomes available. The money would first be used for critical workers such as physicians, nurses, and EMTS, then for the general public.

The commission noted the optimism that Dr. Anthony Fauci has for a vaccine being developed late this year or sometime next year, and pointed out having the money already set aside will help the county prepare when the vaccine becomes available.

Engadget: Olympus is giving up on cameras

It’ll be acquired by the company that bought Sony’s VAIO division

Despite denying persistent rumors that it would exit the camera business, Olympus is doing exactly that. The company has announced that will sell its camera business to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), the same company that purchased Sony’s VAIO PC division (via The Verge). Olympus will now focus on its much larger business supplying industrial and medical imaging equipment.

Olympus said it improved cost structure, focused on high-profit cameras and lenses and took other steps to “cope with the extremely severe digital camera market.” Despite those efforts, however, the company said it “recorded operating losses for three consecutive fiscal years up to the term ended in March 2020.” It likely didn’t help that the company was rocked by a $1.7 billion accounting scandal in 2013.

It’s unclear how this might affect owners of Olympus mirrorless cameras like the flagship O-MD E-M1 Mark III. JIP plans to streamline the business as it did with VAIO to make it “more compact, efficient and agile,” according to Olympus. It will also sell the existing camera models and develop new ones, so it would presumably support current Olympus owners. Beyond that, we don’t know what JIP plans to do with Olympus, and it didn’t exactly bring Sony’s former VAIO division to greatness.

Unless JIP makes new cameras and lenses, you can kiss Micro Four-Thirds goodbye.

This asshat will spend four years in the clink and three more on probation for insurance fraud against Medicare. He must pay back the $800,000+ and surrender his car and speedboat.

TL;DR, he would hold parties for residents of low-income housing and senior living centres in Lincoln, Omaha, and Des Moines, for people who would sign up (giving him their personal information), and give away pizza and ice cream coupons to the residents if they would refer other people to him (giving him other people’s information).

He then used that information to fraudulently bill Medicare and Nebraska and Iowa Medicaid for medical equipment they neither ordered nor needed.

He filed over 3,400 false insurance claims.

As he was a Medicare fraudster for medical equipment, when he is released from prison he is qualified to run as Florida governor.

It’s a shame but not unexpected.

Back in the days of film, the Olympus 35mm OM series was quite the thing. It was a bit of a cult following - I had two OM-4ti. Olympus was always a leader in microscopes, so their camera systems had superior macro/micro-photography capability. And the OM system had a revolutionary metering capability.

But with the advent of autofocus cameras, Canon the megacorp really dominated, and the established Nikon users were always going to stay with their brand, and other companies fell behind. Minolta tried, but it went by the wayside before Olympus, as far as digital cameras. Yes, Sony rescued part of the Minolta line but it was never the same thing.

There was no white night for Olympus, though.

The camera-phone has brought ultimate “democratization” of photography - a phrase coined some time ago - and while such inventions have transformed society (see the recent documentation live of our social ills), photography as an art is not necessarily better for it.

But said camera-phones have replaced point-and-shoots and that was one of the last specialties of Olympus.

The now-famous photo of a lone man sitting in the upper deck of the BOK Center in Tulsa is a photo of a freelance photographer who went to cover Mr. Trump’s rally from Texas.

He describes his time there and how that shot came to be. He also describes what it is event photographers look for when taking pictures, and what event coordinators look for when trying to get photographers to take pictures (or not) of the event the way the coordinator wants. Those goals are rarely the same.

Biden takes 50% to Trump’s 36% in the new New York Times/Siena College poll. White voters gave Trump the presidency: In 2016, exit polls showed white voters going for Trump by a 21-point margin. Now, even among white voters, Trump leads by just one point, 44% to 43%. Despite Biden’s well-publicized struggle for enthusiasm among young voters, he leads among white voters under 45. Black and Hispanic voters give Biden leads of 74 points and 39 points, respectively .
The bad news for Trump, which is to say the good news, doesn’t stop there. The only age group giving Trump a lead in the new poll is people 50 to 64 years old—which means even people 65 and older are going for Biden, albeit narrowly. It’s not even July and there’s a long time to keep pushing and fighting and organizing until November, but it sure is better to be Team Biden right now

There is a whole sub-genre of urban legends that buttress the middle-class conservative worldview. My “favorite,” for both prevalence and corrosive effect, is the two obese minority women (always two and always obese) buying lobster and prime rib (always those specific items) with EBT cards. The teller usually adds that they see this while waiting to pay for their own humble ground chuck. Now, I don’t doubt that this has actually happened among the billions of grocery purchases over the several decades the story has circulated, but I have never seen it and it certainly isn’t commom enough to account for the tiresome frequency with which the story is told. The story, though, is so common, iirc, that the State of Wisconsin specifically removed shellfish and expensive cuts of beef from the list of approved food stamp items. Soda and snack chips (incomparably more frequent purchases) remained though. This may only prove that Coca-Cola and Frito-Lay have more clout than the lobster lobby, at least in Wisconsin.

Despite the rosy prediction of starting things up in July and the season starting at the end of July, reality is going to be a harsh mistress - covid19 cases are soaring in CA, AZ, TX, and FL. That’s bad enough, but we’re seeing cases among NCAA players where teams are practicing together, other sports are seeing similar outbreaks among their players, and it’s a matter of time before MLB players see it race around their locker rooms too.

If you look at the California curves, it is clear we’re still on our first phase. With all the closures and measures (e.g. face mask orders) we’ve slowed the exponential growth considerably but it still looks like an exponential curve.

Our per capita case and death counts have been lower than some other states, because we have successfully slowed the spread.

But we were not able to suppress the virus.

Hence now with people traveling more and going to the beaches, etc., the growth in cases continue.

This is what a communicable disease does. We can’t pretend that it doesn’t exist. This pandemic is really a pandemic, not a “hoax” etc.

We can only hope that a vaccine comes soon.

Shopping mall staple GNC is filing for bankruptcy, planning to close up to 20% of its retail outlets.

GNC has filed for bankruptcy, warning it will close up to a quarter of its stores and search for a buyer.

The 85-year-old vitamin and dietary supplement company has been saddled with nearly $1 billion of debt and has faced declining sales at its brick-and-mortar locations since before the pandemic. However, GNC said that stay-at-home orders during the Covid-19 pandemic prevented the company from accomplishing its refinancing plans because of the abrupt “dramatic negative impact” on its business.

GNC will continue operating, but it will become a smaller company. It plans to close up to 20% of its 5,800 retail stores, which amounts to as many as 1,200 locations across the United States. GNC also sells its products in an additional 1,200 Rite Aid (RAD) stores.

It obtained $130 million in fresh financing from its largest vendor, vitamin supplier IVC, to help it restructure. GNC aims to emerge from bankruptcy in the fall.

Excellent questions, and we don’t have a lot of answers yet.

What I think I know so far from up here near Rottenchester:

The 27th district, late of Chris Collins (R-Federal Pokey), had a special election yesterday to fill the last few months of Convict Chris’ term. The in-person voting in this heavily R district was heavily R, for scumbucket Chris Jacobs, whose entire campaign has been “Trump endorses me!”

But: Collins barely eked out a win in 2018’s blue wave against Dem Nate McMurray, who was the D candidate in the special and will be the D candidate against Jacobs in November for a full term. Will heavy presidential turnout help McMurray? Here’s hoping.

Also but: The in-person voting was only a tiny fraction of the total vote in NY. My best guess is that 90% or more of the voting was absentee. Did the in-person turnout track the absentee balloting? We have no way of knowing and no exit polling to tell us anything. And the absentee count won’t even start for another week.

(Note that this could just as easily affect races like Engel’s downstate, too.)

I want to believe that districts like the 27th in western NY, Elise Stefanik up in the North Country and even Tom Reed in the Southern Tier could be vulnerable in a blue wave this November. I’m hopeful that for Stefanik and Jacobs, tying themselves to a sinking Trump will turn out to be a bad strategy.

As for gerrymandering and the post-2020 redistricting, while NY will lose at least one and maybe two House seats, we’re in good hands for the process. Democrats have regained full control of the State Senate to go with their long control of the Assembly, and a ton of veteran Senate Rs have walked away in the face of long-term minority status. The rural R areas of upstate keep shrinking in population faster than the Democratic cities.

Oh, I know. But from all indications, we’ve been fairly loose on the guidelines for the phased reopenings here. To the point where there’s been reports that some counties haven’t actually met the minimums but were greenlit anyway.

Things probably would have worked out better if we didn’t have shit leadership at the federal level (hell, there’s a decent argument to be made that competent leadership at the federal level means this would have looked more like H1N1 or the swine flu rather than this clusterfuck but that’s a whole other discussion). The quarantine was sold as an opportunity to get a handle on things, get testing, get resources in place, hopefully develop a vaccine. But with Trump’s bullshit we didn’t get that. And now, I think a lot of people are just fatigued.

If Newson announces tomorrow that we all have to go back inside, and there’s no real path forward beyond that, it’s going to be chaos.

Phillies have already had one. And a couple of major NHL players have already caught it. I’m not sure how many well known players having their careers wrecked* by a infection it will take to get the sports to shut down. I expect the owners will try to brush by staff and low-level players getting ill. Not sure how much the players’ unions will take, and that might be the real key.

* - Thinking how a lung infection that degrades capacity by 10-20% could pretty much end a professional career.

Thousands are currently gathered in Moscow for a Victory Day Parade that Putin plans to use to, among other things, declare that Russia has triumphed over the Coronavirus, which is funny as hell as the same article I read that discussed the parade also mentions Putin is kept very isolated due to Covid-19 concerns and anyone who wants to see him must past through a “disinfection tunnel” , whatever the fuck that is.

When I switched from cycling to running in NM, The most difficult part was hydration. Carrying lots of water is so easy on a bike.

I got an USWE vest, then I got a larger capacity one, then I moved to OR. I have not resumed running yet. Lots of walking and some cycling (transportation, entirely). I’ll get there.

Bush was not the incumbent. Better comparisons would be 1976, 1980, and even 1992. Though ‘92 you need to look solely at the margin between Bush and Clinton rather than the actual numbers because Perot was drawing from both nominees.

Listening to Cuomo again (He just can’t stop). He is saying all the things Trump should be saying - and I wonder if it is feasible for Biden to give such talks on a regular basis.

What needs to be done at each stage of the virus in each state. How things should be handled, who should be isolated, how to get the coronavirus growth rates down, how to stop the spread. Get an expert working on the campaign and at the briefings.

He has to plan all this because the virus will still be here in January, so would this be a good campaign strategy?

nothing wrong with a vest, i’m just not a fan personally.

in cooler weather, i can get by with 20 oz an hour so i run 6 mile loops or out/backs

in the summer heat, its 4 oz every 5 minutes so 15 minutes out, 15 minutes back, switch bottles and go out again. with the 2nd bottle, I can switch almost without stopping. for the longer runs, refilling from a pitcher takes 15 or 20 seconds, but now it’s every other stop instead of every one.

and yes, you will get there.

Mine has been correcting everyone who’s promoting their online events as taking place at “9 PM EST” during the summer.

It’s remarkable, really, how many of them never had any clue that “EST” actually means something more than just “Eastern time,” and that “EDT” is something different, and that it’s much easier to just say “ET” unless you’re very specifically trying to tell someone when an event is happening the morning after Halloween. Or if you’re in Arizona, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.

CA might shut back down, but TX, AZ, and FL aren’t given that their governors are Trumpists who’d ignore the health experts yet again. They have consistently moved in lockstep with Trump and ignored the rising cases. Now we’ll watch cases double within days. Deaths will follow closely behind.

California hasn’t really opened up. Imperial County (Rachel’s topic last night) is still completely shut down, so where their cases are coming from is something I can’t fathom — of course, they’re next door to Arizona. But they’re a very small county (174,000 people).

And we’re a large state — there are counties that have had no cases, or none in the last 14 days, and they’re allowed to be more open than the rest of us.

Overall, California flattened the curve, but now we’re rising slightly again. The governor has a press conference coming up in about 10 minutes, and I’ll be listening.

NB re red state governors ignoring medical advice: The governor of Arizona has been sounding pretty panicked. I think a large enough dose of reality may break through to followers of DT after all. If theiir nooses are rubbed in it.
