I’m getting the sinking feeling watching season 1 of Monty Python on Netflix that the show is small bits of funny combined with large tracts of unfunny. And I’m pretty sure it’s not just my American sensibilities, because the audience also seems to be rather mystified about what the writers could possibly have thought of as being funny in a skit. I know many later comic acts and writers trace their genesis to having experienced Monty Python, but not much of this seems all that durable.

Totally agree. I watched it and loved it when it originally aired (even though I was far outside the target demo, even back then) and have watched every season and the movie several times. I am still impressed with how many of the issues they addressed when the series first aired have come to the forefront in recent years. (I particularly chuckle at Veronica’s comment before heading to NY for her graduation trip (and this was 2006)—

Monty Python is… occasionally difficult.

The movies are devastatingly funny. The three seasons of TV are very, very uneven. It’s maybe best considered as experimental humor television, running the range from straight skit performance to convoluted recursive injokes. All of which is from a 1970’s BBC context, with large doses of politics and period economics.

When I was 17, an ep showed up on PBS one night and I watched it and I didn’t get it. Any of it. When I was in college with my buddies it was a riot, but I’d burn out after about five eps in a row. My last watch of it I saw the humor in most of it, but maybe enjoyed about a third.

Like Star Trek, the second season is the best. Third gets a bit too political and they go for gross-out more often. But don’t think you’re weird if segments just fly right past you.

…yes, some booze helps.

Ok, going to get all wonky and deep in the weeds on constitutional theory, but…

there is one school of thought, rather pedantic in nature (so of course it draws a lot of paleo-cons and glibertarian types) that says that while the preamble states the goals of the constitution, the first two articles (in particular) provide the process by which we achieve those goals. They tend to be very focused on Article I, Section 8 and Section 9; and to a certain extent, the Bill of Rights. But they’re fond of ignoring the 14th Amendment and the implications of what that clause saying “Congress shall have the power to enforce these provisions” actually means.

They’ll jump on Hamilton’s idea of state police powers being “health, welfare, and morality” - mostly when it suits them - to argue that something like a pandemic should be solely the responsibility of the individual states, while ignoring that in the modern world you need an active federal government to accomplish most “big” things.

coming from the POV of being introduced to Python as a budding rebellious teen, it was awesome in multiple ways… it was sophomoric humor for smart people. As such, it caused me to get better acquainted with world events in order to “get” the joke. Their prevalent theme of tweaking authority and being subversive had enormous appeal and the breakneck pace of switching gears in the middle of sketches and defying conventions contributed to that. It was in short, somewhat revolutionary in that it was built from the roots of The Goon Show and The Frost Report and with the advent of Gilliam’s linking illustrations, was unlike anything else.

Plus it was 50 years ago, times change, I am no longer the impressionable teenager I was then when I discovered them and if you examine them thru the lens of today, it doesn’t look the same, but in all honesty, what does?

But in the reliable or marginal Republican areas, there’s no way of really suppressing this. coming from the POV of being introduced to Python as a budding rebellious teen, it was awesome in multiple ways… it was sophomoric humor for smart people. As such, it caused me to get better acquainted with world events in order to “get” the joke. Their prevalent theme of tweaking authority and being subversive had enormous appeal and the breakneck pace of switching gears in the middle of sketches and defying conventions contributed to that. It was in short, somewhat revolutionary in that it was built from the roots of The Goon Show and The Frost Report and with the advent of Gilliam’s linking illustrations, was unlike anything else.

Plus it was 50 years ago, times change, I am no longer the impressionable teenager I was then when I discovered them and if you examine them thru the lens of today, it doesn’t look the same, but in all honesty, what does?

And they are still 200% better than SNL.

I’m getting the sinking feeling watching season 1 of Monty Python on Netflix that the show is small bits of funny combined with large tracts of unfunny. And I’m pretty sure it’s not just my American sensibilities, because the audience also seems to be rather mystified about what the writers could possibly have thought of as being funny in a skit. I know many later comic acts and writers trace their genesis to having experienced Monty Python, but not much of this seems all that durable.

Basically, it took Marvel/Disney pretty much finishing the movie, showing the remaining members of the band a teaser trailer (with the song in it), and the band pretty much being given dump trucks full of cash to secure the rights…and the song definitely works for that scene in spades.

This band is certainly not going to be to everyone’s tastes. Sort of a prog-emo-metal thing with a unique vocalist. They’re a Canadian band called Protest the Hero that just released (in my opinion) the best American protest album of the Trump era. The entire thing is a critique of American exceptionalism through the 20th and 21st centuries. The last track (here) manages to use “Make America Great Again” as a chorus, and is somehow simultaneously hopeful and a scathing condemnation of the MAGA mindset. If you’re into this type of music, this album is fantastic.

I’ve retained a real affinity for the necessarily low-cost food with which my mother worked miracles to feed the mob (8 children) when I was young. Creamed corn is an exception though. Didn’t like it then, don’t like it now.

My younger daughter goes so far as to say that cheap food is one of my hobbies. My favorite is probably red beans, cornbread and fried potatoes (usually broiled nowadays, though, since I am afraid my arteries would clog and send me pitching over dead right on the spot if I even looked at fried spuds). The feast also includes some sort of non-bean greens on the side (usually spinach or turnip greens).

This is mostly the territory of bad techno-thrillers. Crichton and “Andromeda Strain” had the whole cloud of superbug mutate into something different all at once multiple times and that’s stuck in a lot of people’s heads.

In reality while you’ll see some changed strains of any virus, the odds that any will make much difference are low and the odds that the specific mutation will make a difference on timescales shorter than months and years are just silly. And just about any mutation will probably mostly be regional and limited anyway.

The place this matters is with endemic bacteria where resistant strains are outrunning development of new drugs. And that’s still a long-term concern.

I’m getting the sinking feeling watching season 1 of Monty Python on Netflix that the show is small bits of funny combined with large tracts of unfunny. Can’t find one. Most polls have Trump up by 7-10 in Mississippi right now, which is not impossible to overcome, just unlikely. projects.economist.com

Whole convoys of them could be rounded up in Mexico and positioned to rush the border and fan out toward Dem strongholds all over the state. He’s a public health hazard who has no business involved in any public health decisions.

He’s enabling Trump’s know nothing approach to covid19, which is to ignore the problem entirely, claim it’s not a problem, all while cases soar, deaths continue to pile up, and the economy remains in neutral because the overwhelming majority of people aren’t going to risk their lives to go to work or restaurants or engage in leisure travel because covid19 kills people.

New Zealand is the opposite case - they not only got containment, but zero cases for 3 weeks.

They’re actually back to public sports and crowds - all without masks.

They successfully contained covid19.

We could have done that. Trump made it impossible.

And we have fucknuts like DeSantis and Abbott who thought they could bluster and bulkshit their way through this all while the cases pile up.

The cases are piling up, and the economic damage continues to mount. I fully expect the hard work done by NY and NJ to be undone because assholes take the Trump view on masks and ignore social distancing and masking and get others infected here.

Practically every other country was able to control the first wave of cases.

The US gave up after NY/NJ controlled the worst of their outbreaks. Now we’re watching the cases soar in places where the local idiots in charge have no clue what they’re doing beyond trying to deflect, ignore, and outright lie about the cases and deaths.

It’s indeed early, but there’s no way we’re doing Thanksgiving under the current circumstances.

It was stressful enough to do family outside with social distancing for Father’s Day. And that’ll come after weeks of indoor activities like school and potential work back in an office (I don’t expect to return to my office before the end of the year - officially, the earliest we’d be voluntarily going is October).

All arrivals to NZ have to go through 14 days isolation. The govt pays for them to stay in a hotel. At the moment we are seeing 1 or 2 new cases a day in these repatriations. If you test positive you are moved to a more secure facility and your room is not used for 10 days.

The system is working and the figures show we absolutely need it. There was one awful flub early on - two Britons were given permission to leave isolation early on compassionate grounds and drove down from Auckland to Wellington to attend a funeral.

They were not tested prior to departure and were both positive. Contact tracing seems to indicate they haven’t infected anyone else fortunately.

At that point the government got the military to take over management of the isolation facilities. They are the logistics experts after all.

I’ve got a casserole dish that you should have. It’s made by Campbells and it has their chubby-cheeked little girl and the recipe for green bean casserole at the bottom of the dish. It’s very festive and would definitely be a hit at almost any white Thanksgiving dinner.

The Democratic Party should have immediately moved to impeach Trump again when the first effort failed. There was no scarcity of impeachable offenses, ffs.

I know, I’m nuts. What am I thinking. Argh.

In an ideal world, I would love to have seen this happen and it would have been effective.

In the extremely skewed world we live in, Dems very well would have been strung up for trying that, by the media, by Red State dems, hell probably by lefter-than-thou folks who would’ve found an excuse to turn it into something, and definitely by the GOP and all involved there. And that noise machine could have very well translated it into some martyrdom support for Trump just because Dems are always wrong when they do something and wrong whenever they don’t do something.

It’s why I’m not hankering for Pelosi’s head like so many (including some folks I wish knew better) are, for not committing to impeaching Barr. Considering the logjam we’re getting as is for the current investigations will in progress thanks to subpoenas and documents still held up in court proceedings, I’m not convinced an impeachment could be fast tracked, nor that one would be greeted would open arms to begin with, even by the folks who are excoriating Dems for not doing so yesterday and a minute ago.

Am I being a bit gunshy with that? Possibly. I just find myself doubtful that repeated impeachment attempts would be anywhere near accepted as they should be under the current situation. Something that might be a bit colored by things like Baquet still insisting that the Times’ 2016 coverage was sterling and super-perfect.
