OK, I got CLed but I’m going to share my minizine that I plan on printing out and giving out if I go picket at one of the three metro locations of Dream City Church. Each location has a Full Cash Value of around $25 million. So that’s $75 million in tax dollars absolutely OFF THE BOOKS because they’re a religious group that tacitly endorsed Trump for president.

I may not end up out there because I got voluntold for a monitoring shift from 01:00 to 05:00 tomorrow morning. But there will be other opportunities. :)

You can poison it with the right materials, e.g. boron. But you still have a source in the open plus the decay heat to contend with.

disclose.tv is listed as a fake news site on wikipedia. So not a time to panic over this story.

They might actually have got it from Reuters.

VIENNA (Reuters) - Radiation sensors in Stockholm have detected higher-than-usual but still harmless levels of isotopes produced by nuclear fission, probably from somewhere on or near the Baltic Sea, a body running a worldwide network of the sensors said on Friday.

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) oversees a network of hundreds of monitoring stations that use seismic, hydroacoustic and other technology to check for a nuclear weapon test anywhere in the world. That technology can, however, be put to other uses as well.

One of its stations scanning the air for radionuclides - telltale radioactive particles that can be carried long distances by the wind - detected unusually high levels of three radionuclides earlier this week: caesium-134, caesium-137 and ruthenium-103.

It’s safe levels, which disclose.tv fails to disclose, but other sources mention. But still, Cs-134, Cs-137 and Ru-103 aren’t the sort of isotopes that pop up naturally in the environment. My hunch is some sort of incident or accident at a re-enrichment plant or a medium-storage pond drying out and uncovering fuel elements. Stuff like that.

Two interesting articles in WaPo today about the slavery issues concerning both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

George and Martha Washington enslaved 300 people. Let’s start with their names. Opinion by Michele L. Norris

That’s [list] just 10 names of the more than 300 people enslaved by George and Martha Washington. They worked and traveled most closely with our nation’s first First Family as chamber maids, postilions, cooks, waiters, laborers, seamstresses and valets.

Did you know that George Washington had only one tooth in his mouth when he became president in 1789, thanks to bad health and 18th-century dentistry? But his false teeth were not made of wood, as is often described in folk songs and lore. His dentures were made from the pulled teeth of slaves.

It gets worse, but probably not more gruesome than that.

Frederick Douglass delivered a Lincoln reality check at Emancipation Memorial unveiling, By DeNeen L. Brown

On April 14, 1876, Frederick Douglass arrived at the unveiling ceremony for the Emancipation Memorial, the statue now under attack by some protesters in Washington’s Lincoln Park.
A crowd of 25,000, many of them African American, had gathered to hear Douglass speak on the 11th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
By all accounts, Douglass, the great orator and abolitionist, was not pleased with the monument, which depicted Lincoln holding a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation while towering over a kneeling black man who had broken his chains.

When reactor no. 4 at Chernobyl blew up on 26th April 1986 there was a second reactor failure about a week later, this time in West Germany on May 4th. A fuel “pebble” in the pebble-bed THTR-300 reactor got stuck and broke up, releasing noticeable amounts of radioactivity into the environment. The THTR-300 operators tried to cover this up, hoping no-one would notice it in the much larger cloud of radioactive fallout from Chernobyl but isotopic analysis revealed another reactor of a different type had gone bonk.

Lots of countries have put a great deal of effort into detecting and analysing very very small amounts of fission products, driven by nuclear weapons development and the desire to know what the Other Side is up to.

Pence following through with visit to Dallas church as pandemic rages

For over a week, Pence has been scheduled to speak at First Baptist Dallas, a church led by Pastor Robert Jeffress, an enthusiastic supporter of President Donald Trump. But the coronavirus situation in Texas has deteriorated quickly in recent days, and Pence indicated Friday that his Texas visit will at least partially focus on the outbreak now.

Pence, who chairs the White House coronavirus task force, said during a briefing that he will bring another task force member, Dr. Deborah Birx, to Texas on Sunday as part of a tour of hotspot states “to get a ground report.” Pence’s office announced later Friday that Pence will meet with Gov. Greg Abbott and his “healthcare team” following the church appearance.

Nobody builds military propulsion reactors fuelled with plutonium. The most modern incarnations of submarine and military ship reactors use highly-enriched uranium in the dioxide form as ceramic pellets. The only non-military ship reactors in operation I know of are the Russian KLT-35/40 reactors and their derivatives as fitted to the big Artika-class icebreakers and the floating power plant NPP Akademic Lomonozov. The KLT-series pressurised-water reactors use low-enriched uranium since they’re theoretically civilian operations.

As for plutonium and water, the raw metal and oxide forms of plutonium are pretty much insoluble, ditto for uranium.

Workers removed thousands of social distancing stickers before Trump’s Tulsa rally, according to video and a person familiar with the set-up

In the hours before his rally in Tulsa, President Trump’s campaign directed the removal of thousands of “Do Not Sit Here, Please!” stickers from seats in the arena that were intended to establish social distance between rallygoers, according to video and photos obtained by The Washington Post and a person familiar with the event. The removal contradicted instructions from the management of the BOK Center, the 19,000-seat arena in downtown Tulsa where Trump held his rally on June 20.

my understanding was that plutonium is not good in water, because it expands and is no longer a nice little ball, but kind of a pudgy nightmare, which is why they were really worried about water getting into the chernobyl sarcophagus. I thought this was the reason for several early accidents, some lethal: plutonium expanded through accidental contact with water and broke its containment, irradiating scientists pretty badly. Okay, definitely not a scientist, so I defer to better judgement.

So yes, I think there needed to be real management from the presidential level, but directly blaming Trump is a little more than the data here supports. Transitive incompetence, sure.

re: #71 steve_davis

There are a number of radioactive fission products which are chemically soluble in water in their elemental form and sometimes in oxide form too. The melting point is also very important — Iodine-131 is a classic example, it escapes from containment in vapour form and is very radioactive (the shorter the half-life the ‘hotter’ the isotope which means it’s easier to detect). Cesium has two isotopes that are common fission products, -134 and -137, it has a very low melting point and reacts badly with water like its kissing cousin, sodium.

Getting unconstrained water into a contaminated area means any fission products present can go walkabout which is why folks worry about that sort of thing. Most longer-lived fission products though have low mobility due to high melting points and low solubility in water — Strontium-90, for example. Actual fissile elements like uranium and plutonium are quite inert chemically speaking in both elemental and oxide forms. There are some uranyl compounds that are readily soluble in water but they take a lot of chemical processing to create, they don’t just happen from exposure of the metal to environmental factors.

On third or fourth thought, if there was an actual crisis management team running the situation rather than some political hacks trying to pretend it isn’t really a problem, this sort of stuff would have been sorted out.

(edit missing words) So, yes, complete top-level incompetence means that ground-level problems cannot get sorted out and the bad data doesn’t get filtered. I still think “Trump knew” is overselling it, but the alternative cases are mostly worse.

…though that gets us back into the malice vs. incompetence argument, and I think I’m going to be sick.

Sometimes, I just love the internet.

Faught was a cajun term in south Louisiana for fart.

Another racist asshole outing themselves

A North Carolina racetrack owner is facing massive criticism and boycotts from fans after he decided to advertise “Bubba Rope” for sale on Facebook marketplace.

The racist post comes after Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s only full-time Black driver in its top tier, and NASCAR itself made public statements about a noose being found Sunday in his garage before one of NASCAR’s most famous races, the Geico 500 at Talladega, Ala.

“Buy your Bubba Rope today for only $9.99 each, they come with a lifetime warranty and work great,” said Mike Fulp, owner of 311 Motor Speedway in Stokes County, on Wednesday. Source: Deadspin

As far as I’m concerned, you forfeit your right to talk about patriotism if you venerate that flag. Nathan Bedford Forrest among others only served the CSA and dreaded the CSA losing because they hated the Union so much. They weren’t proud Americans.

Louie Gohmert, public servant extraordinaire.

Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert spends ample time on the House floor not wearing a mask, often talking with aides and lawmakers at length while not maintaining a social distance.

Asked why not, the 66-year-old Gohmert had an explanation that defied the science and the recommendations of leading public health experts.

“I don’t have the coronavirus, turns out as of yesterday I’ve never had it. But if I get it, you’ll never see me without a mask,” the conservative Texan told CNN Friday.

Told that health experts say that people who don’t have symptoms may be carrying the virus and can unknowingly spread it to others, Gohmert responded: “But I keep being tested and I don’t have it. So I’m not afraid of you, but if I get it I’ll wear a mask.”

216
Backwoods_Sleuth  Jun 27, 2020 • 4:10:05pm

MrBWS was laid off May 9.
Union health insurance runs out end of July … cost is roughly $1000 for six months, then roughly $1100/mo for COBRA until he officially retires, which was going to be April 2021, but unemployment runs out at end of August, so we’ll have to seriously hit our savings.
OTOH, Greater Cincinnati Covid numbers are skyrocketing, and odds are MrBwS will be called back as current linemen test positive or worse, or hurricane season heats up.
Since his heart attack and bypass surgery in January 2018 puts him at elevated risk, I am less than enthusiastic about him going back out into the general public.

This just sucks.

Also, he is quite enjoying this retirement preview. I have to keep reminding him about the financial impacts

This is interesting to me from a design perspective of building an e-commerce site. The old adage, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” comes to mind - design it to check and validate inventory at checkout, don’t reserve inventory when it’s added to the cart. That has some interesting user experience implications, too… Great, now my brain has a problem to chew on.

That’s what Etsy does. It might say something like “2 items available, in 4 people’s carts.” A million people could put the item in their carts but Etsy will still say 2 are available until they are actually purchased.

Democrats better seriously consider impeachment 2.0.

Start hearings Monday morning into Trump’s misconduct and cozying up to Putin all while ignoring that the Russians put bounties on American troops in Afghanistan and paid out. Russia was paying the Taliban to kill our troops, and Trump’s response was to go ahead and insist that Putin be allowed back into the G-7.

Fuck that.

Hearings should start Monday AM at 9 sharp. Demand that Barr show his hideous mug and testify under oath as to his misconduct and interfering in ongoing investigations, the sentencing recommendations of Trump cronies, and all manner of malfeasance and politicization of the DOJ to benefit Trump personally and directly.

We have at least a half dozen articles of impeachment that could be addressed - not only the felony conduct for which he’s already an unindicted coconspirator, but the attempted extortion of China, the Bolton corroboration of same, the misconduct around the bounties, the failed covid19 response, and how every last one of Trump’s decisions has been worse than the one before re: covid19. You couldn’t get a worse outcome had you actually tried.

Democrats have to grow a spine. Hearings should be held regardless of whether impeachment occurs, and make sure that the press are there to capture every word of these treasonous GOPers - and don’t hold back either. Make sure people see how Jordan, Nunes, and the rest of the Trumpists were directly and personally involved and had a stake in protecting Trump at any cost.

Guess what - these actions caught on video would prove that the campaign knowingly undermined social distancing rules and procedures and did so with purposeful intent.

Five Eyes gore all oxes.

The whole point of the “treaties” (informal undocumented agreements) is to let the members spy on other members citizens with no oversight.

The downside to that is that I put the last item on my cart, and by the time I pay out, I can’t buy it. What they need to do is build in a sanity checker. No one is buying a millions dollars worth of stuff.

With the egos these people have, they probably do think there are people who want to buy millions of dollars worth of stuff.

What I have in my head is a background process that tracks reserved and ordered inventory. In each step of the checkout process, that process gets queried to see if there’s enough inventory to fulfill the final checkout. Once the ordered quantity brings the inventory below the cart’s reserved quantity, the user gets a notification, “Hey, somebody just bought the last X of these, there are only Y left.”

Please don’t try to be an amateur submarine nuclear reactor engineer. If you want to know how bad it could be ask an expert like Jimmy Carter. (with the caveat that his time was on Rickover style mini PWR’s, not the cute molten lead cooled stuff the USSR was using).

Now I shut up, to take my own advice.

re: #51 steve_davis

if it’s a russian sub reactor that broke open in water, and was fueled with plutonium, they’re fucked, because plutonium and water do not go well together, at all.

A lot depends on the reactor design. The reactors I worked around in the Navy, used water also for cooling and rods to control the reaction. The reactors wouldn’t reach critical unless all of the rods were withdrawn. That was a later design, and the earlier ones could reach critical with one rod drawn. In either case, what would have now for a sunken sub is how far any erosion would have gone.

Now there was a proof-of-concept reactor built that used water in place of the rods. But that was Rickover settling a bet.

What are the chances of honest, condition-driven, underreporting in the boonies?

I think the State is making a very honest effort to report the true numbers. Note the graph I posted is labeled “Alaska Residents”. There are probably 30-40 more non-residents who came up to work in the seafood industry who are not in that count.

See: Active COVID-19 cases continue to swell in Alaska as 27 more people test positive

Here in Juneau, every passenger flying in from out of state gets tested at the airport. Juneau also has a very good website CBJ Covid-19 that covers local, State, National, and Inter-National information.

Our Mayor, the former Deputy Fire Chief and a Covid-19 survivor, has established local Incident Command System protocol to manage the cities response.

So far, i think every thing is looking good. Still too many people not wearing masks so things could go bottom up in the future.

The myth: “Parler is a censorship-free zone that we can congregate in outside the tyrannical rule of Twitter!!!”

The reality: Parler’s TOS is even more restrictive that Twitter’s, it’s app is a joke, and the only people flocking there are wingnuts who have been or are soon to be banned from Twitter.

He’s so intent on getting some liberals onto the platform that he’s offering a $20,000 “progressive bounty” for an openly liberal pundit with 50,000 followers on Twitter or Facebook to start a Parler account.

The company will judge the best one, based on engagement with the community, and pay that person the reward. Matze said there’s been such little response that he increased the original proposed payment from $10,000 to $20,000.

Maybe it is just me but hearing about the Russians offering bounty’s for the Taliban to kill American soldiers in Afghanistan & that Trump was briefed has me wondering about this ambush in Niger….

I seriously doubt a connection.
More likely this bounty has it’s roots in the 2018 Battle of Khasham. Where the Russian mercenary group ‘Wagner Group’ got decimated by American forces in Syria. The Tongo Tongo ambush occurred 4 months earlier in 2017.

The Gross Hellscape That Awaits Ted Cruz on Parler (The Bulwark)

How many permutations of “ni*CLANG” can you make on one site? The Bulwark has some screenshots.

As incendiary Twitter accounts have increasingly been held accountable by the enforcement of Twitter’s terms of service, some right-wing users have taken to crying censorship.

Here is what transpired. The accounts in question made multiple offenses. They appeared to violate the rules. They were warned. They were given explanations. Nevertheless, they persisted.

And now several Republican officials have taken notice and concluded that this is a grave constitutional issue. Free speech itself is in danger. For Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Devin Nunes, and others, ensuring that even the dregs of society can post with impunity is a priority without peer. A private company is putting a warning label on users who inject violent or racist material on its platform? Somebody call James Madison, the Constitution is on fire!

Also, the four Americans who got killed in Niger were presumed to be the victims of a (very) local jihadist group: not the sort the Russians are likely to bother themselves with - for one thing, they seem to be too small, too local, and too poor to be worth the intervention.
