Our most venerated monuments represent a mythology. While we may hope the statue represents our highest aspirations of what America can and should be. It also can be a reminder of where and how far we fall short. Read more: washingtonpost.com. Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube: wapo.st

OT For those Downton Abbey fans out there: this is the last week that it will be on PBS. Please check your local stations for air times. For those who get WHYY (Philadelphia and Wilmington) tomorrow Season 6 will be on tomorrow from 8 AM to 7 PM.

Well, “Boyardee” was the way old Hector/Ettore insisted on having it on his stuff when they went “commercial” - supposedly to make sure Americans could pronounce it “correctly”. And I’m sure he was OK with however it was spelled, as long as it had “Pay To The Order Of….” somewhere in there.

I knew there had actually been a real “Chef Boyardee” - but I had always thought (Dog knows why) that his name had been Joseph (Giuseppe). But I didn’t know he’d had his first restaurant in Cleveland - live. browse, and learn.

We watched Blues Brothers last night (my parents once again had not seen a movie I had shown their grandkids). It was fun trying to figure out who was an actual musician and who wasn’t. I think even with the cops and military people at the end, there were still more musicians than non-musical actors.

Something I learned today: Chef Boyardee (Ettore Boiardi) was a real person - an immigrant from Italy, who found fame and success in Cleveland. And now there’s a proposal in Cleveland to replace the city’s statue of Columbus with Boiardi.

I did not know this! But I have often wondered where that odd product name came from. Some more trivia to store in the already overstuffed trivia file.

Between James Baldwin, Ken Burns, and Sasha Baron Cohen, my heart is full right now.

But shit Charles, if you said ‘5 min video of Ken Burns and James Baldwin’ I would not think much because Burns is about length and depth… but that 5 min was super rich.

If we are going to truly move past our racist founding and history James Baldwin is an extremely important voice. That he speaks with such grace and poise, as if an art, is a bonus.

After Drinking Hand Sanitizer, 3 Dead and 1 Permanently Blinded In New Mexico

Three people in New Mexico died and one became permanently blinded after drinking hand sanitizer.

The New Mexico Department of Health released a statement Friday indicating that that three of seven people who ingested had sanitizer in May died from methanol poisoning; one was blinded permanently; and the other three remain in critical condition.

Kathy Kunkel, the secretary for the state health department, said in the statement that those who have either consumed or ingested hand sanitizer containing methanol should “seek immediate medical care.”“An antidote to methanol poisoning is available, but the earlier someone gets treated for methanol poisoning the better the chance of recovery,” Kunkel said.

The best non journalist explanation of trump I have read

A.R. in Los Angeles, CA, writes: (Z) speculated that Donald Trump had declared the China trade deal dead, told Peter Navarro, and then cooled off and changed his mind. He also mused that administrations usually improve their messaging over time and get better at the “nuts and bolts” of running the country. That assumes, of course, that the man at the top cares one iota about running the country or about consistent, truthful messaging. Donald Trump cares about one thing and one thing only: Donald Trump. He has been completely consistent throughout his career and his presidency on that score. He will say whatever he thinks he needs to say to get what he wants at any given moment. I have no doubt he told Navarro that the deal was dead. When Navarro announced that, the markets tanked. So, Trump took to twitter and said exactly the opposite and the markets recovered—problem solved. He doesn’t care whether there’s actually a deal with China and he doesn’t care whether China actually buys more soybeans or not. All he cares about is the announcement and appearances and the reaction of his base, his donors and the markets. That’s it!

It was the same with the Bidens and Burisma. Trump didn’t care whether an investigation was actually done or whether there was any basis for one—all he wanted was the announcement. He doesn’t care whether North Korea actually dismantles its nuclear arsenal. All he cared about was the photo op and the announcement of some vague deal. No one believes Trump is actually religious. All he wanted was a photo in front of a church holding a Bible. Likewise, he doesn’t care about the outcome of Barr’s investigation into the investigators or whether that’s proper—all he wanted was the announcement.

It’s the same with COVID-19. It’s a hoax when he wants to pack an arena and it’s a deadly scourge when he wants to restrict immigration. He doesn’t care how many people actually test positive; he just doesn’t want it announced—that’s why he doesn’t want any more testing. It was the same in his career, and he bragged about it. How many floors are in his new building? It depends who’s asking. If it’s the press, it’s 100 floors. If it’s the Building Department, who will charge more for a permit, then it’s 80. If he wanted a loan, his loan application claimed he was rich as Croesus. If it’s a tax return, suddenly he’s a pauper. The truth is irrelevant. He says whatever he needs to say in the moment to get what he wants in the moment. That’s the entirety of what drives him and he has never, ever deviated from that, even as president.

If reporting about Russian bounties on US forces is true, the White House must explain:
1. Why weren’t the president or vice president briefed? Was the info in the PDB?
2. Who did know and when?
3. What has been done in response to protect our forces & hold Putin accountable?

I assume they are just gonna call it Fake News.

Eric Boelert:

“…Trump’s at war with an unraveling America, that much is clear. The parallel reality is that the American press corps does not know how to deal with this frightening scenario. Or it does know, it just doesn’t have the courage to put that into practice.

Too timid to call Trump out as a radical saboteur who foments racial violence for political purposes, the Beltway media busies itself chronicling his controversies, documenting his “falsehoods” (never “lies”), and occasionally highlighting his hypocrisy. But an honest discussion about Trump’s plot against America? That’s not really allowed in the news pages.”

I have a serious answer. What they are trying to conserve is hereditary status and privilege, especially in the hinterland gentry. Generational decay is a major issue with that demographic. We all know the smart but crooked local boss whose children turned out to be drooling idiots. There are real reasons this happens, having mostly to do with poor reproductive choices and bad child rearing practices that result from deeply embedded cultural factors. They must have an extra advantage to avoid sinking back into poverty.

I don’t have to go to Florida to get my racism - Southside Hospital worker fired after Instagram messages

A nursing student was fired from her position at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore Thursday after writing messages on Instagram disparaging Black and Hispanic people.

In the messages, which were obtained by Patch, Emily Patysiak wrote to another employee that the patients at the hospital were all “gang members” who are “Black and Hispanic” and claims they are only treated for gunshot wounds or drinking.

“The fact that my f—-ing paycheck goes to these scums is disgusting,” Patysiak wrote in one message.

In another message, Patysiak admits to being a racist and claims she will “never marry or date anyone besides a white kid.” She also says all Hispanic people and Black people are “lazy” and “part of gangs.”

The messages were then shared publicly on Instagram. Patysiak’s Instagram account has since been deleted.

How fucking bone-stupid do you have to be to post that shit to Insta, and leave it public? Racists are pretty fucking dumb.

We want a landslide so that No one will take Trumps complaints about voter fraud seriously. The danger is a close electoral college result that gives the GOP the opportunity to try to steal the election.

No normal person, but that still means that 30% will, and they will continue to protest out loud.

Hey. If you wanted good music at your religious services, you’d have joined a black church. I’m not even a Christian, and I’ve gone to AME services. There’s always some little old lady in an excellent hat who wants to welcome me to worship, and she’s disappointed when I tell her I’m Jewish and only there for the choir.

GOP ids well aware of that fact and they know that they have to resort to even more dirty and desperate tricks than they used in 2016.

And if their magic bag of dirty tricks fails to work this November, I think they’re going to be spending their time in the political wilderness figuring out “What the fuck do we now?”

Buzz Aldrin is from New Jersey. Born in Glen Ridge, grew up in Montclair.

I’d rather much a school be named after him than Woodrow Wilson, TBH.

My elementary school, junior high and high school were all named for geographic features. Two of them in Spanish.

When I was a kid growing up in South Pasadena, the elementary school I went was originally Lincoln Elementary - the name was changed to Arroyo Vista Elementary School back in (I think) 1978 or 1979.

I don’t know why the name was changed, to be honest. It was changed over the summer break….we came back in September and it was Arroyo Vista. No one kicked up a fuss about it or anything that I recall.

I’m for public shaming and outing and driving them back into their caves and under the rocks they slithered out from under. Let them lose their jobs and family connections. If they want a white America let them live in their isolated groups (there’s plenty of places in the south where you won’t see any people of color, mostly because those places are shitholes beyond the racism) where it’s easier to keep an eye on them. Make them own their shit. I’m sick of these fucking people breaking everything around them and blaming it on POC. Fuck their feelings.

This won’t happen if Democrats learn to promote their agenda with the same effectiveness and gut-punch framing that the Lincoln Project uses against trump. And the younger/newer crop of Democrats (AOC, Katie Porter, Ted Lieu, Brian Schatz) show how it can be done. If more Dems followed suit, it would be enough to overwhelm the built-in both-sides beltway media bias.

My elementary school was named after Neil Armstrong. When I was in third grade or so, a nearby opened school named for Buzz opened nearby and we had a rivalry. Buzz visited his namesake. Unfortunately Neil never did. He handled fame differently than Buzz did. My middle and high school are the same as my hometown who was named for a Navy hero whose daughter married President Arthur.

If more Dems followed suit, it would be enough to overwhelm the built-in both-sides beltway media bias.

[Insert WAY TOO EARLY Disclaimer HERE]

Which is why I think the 2022 election* is going to be every bit as important as this year’s: hopefully the “1934” to FDR’s big win in 1932 - and, even more hopefully, by similar margins. A Democratic Administration and Congress are, I think, going to have just two years to establish themselves as a viable Government - in the face of what will undoubtedly be Republican obstructionism on steroids (worse, I imagine, than Obama’s first term, as the GOP didn’t have the Trump-stink clinging to them, and weren’t facing a possible electoral rebuke of epic proportions) - and of course, that insane media bias: with the MSM ready to run “How Biden Has Failed” thumbsuckers 24/7/365.

I think the way to do that is going to have to be two-fold: and in the old-fashioned way: 1) get a (D) Congress to enact popular legislation and sign it into law (and make sure the GOP gets raked for their obstruction); and 2) “clean up” the Federal Government after four years of Trumpian corruption and ineptitude. And make damn sure the Biden Admin and (D) Congress get the credit (and Trump/GOP the blame)

Oh, and 3) Bust ass to sweep the GOP out of the Senate in 2022.

* 22 or 24 GOP Senators up for reelection, vs. 12-13 Dems.

ETA: re: #322 NO SMOCKING GUN!. I disagree. In the normal course of politics, I think you’d be right: but I’m not sure “normal” is normal anymore. Hence my recommendations above.

As I said upthread, not inevitable if Dems as a whole learn effective framing and message discipline for a change. They were terrible during the Obama era, running away from him (instead of defending him) like a bunch of timid little milquetoasts. Low-info voters tend to respond favorably to “strong and wrong” vs “weak and right”, so just imagine what could be accomplished with “strong and right”.

“…Trump often did not appear in the Oval Office until 11:30 A.M. Typically, the first item on his schedule was the President’s Daily Brief, a top-secret summary of the nation’s most sensitive intelligence. “It was awful,” a former White House official told me. “He just rants and raves. It’s mostly about what was on Fox News. He really does believe that he knows more than the generals, more than the intelligence professionals.” Trump’s chief of staff, John Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general, who had replaced Priebus, limited the P.D.B. sessions to three a week, to avoid wasting time. If Trump seemed to be in an especially foul mood, Kelly would cancel that day’s briefing.”

I think I’m going to start calling corporate offices and bitching. Some companies like Walmart and Kroger have inconsistent rules and enforcement depending on where you are. Which is stupid because it confuses the public and enforces a lot of this dumbassery. I bet if you put a cop at the front door of most of these places a lot of bullshit would stop. Especially if there were fines, permabans and other measures taken. And even more important, companies backing the employees who are responsible for keeping the public safe.Public safety and health is way more important than Karen and Co and their precious feelings. Not enough of us are fighting back against this as it happens. And there’s a fear there that’s legit, there is a contingent of these people that won’t only spit or cough on you, there’s a real possibility of being shot or hurt. They can’t be allowed to bully everyone into submission, that’s a big part of why this mess has exploded.

Costco v. Walmart
hbr.org

Though the businesses are direct competitors and quite similar overall, a remarkable disparity shows up in their wage and benefits structures. The average wage at Costco is $17 an hour. Wal-Mart does not break out the pay of its Sam’s Club workers, but a full-time worker at Wal-Mart makes $10.11 an hour on average, and a variety of sources suggest that Sam’s Club’s pay scale is similar to Wal-Mart’s. A 2005 New York Times article by Steven Greenhouse reported that at $17 an hour, Costco’s average pay is 72% higher than Sam’s Club’s ($9.86 an hour).

On the benefits side, 82% of Costco employees have health-insurance coverage, compared with less than half at Wal-Mart. And Costco workers pay just 8% of their health premiums, whereas Wal-Mart workers pay 33% of theirs. Ninety-one percent of Costco’s employees are covered by retirement plans, with the company contributing an annual average of $1,330 per employee, while 64 percent of employees at Sam’s Club are covered, with the company contributing an annual average of $747 per employee.

(the article this is quoting from is 2006.
Recent figures are that Costco pays an average wage of $21/hr, Walmart is $13)

Exactly why I dropped Sam’s Club, stopped going to Wal-Mart, and got my Costco membership a long time ago.
