The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

This week we’ll publish four Tiny Desk (home) concerts from around the world. We begin in South Korea, where Tiny Desk Concerts are quite popular. In fact, I invited the Korean band SsingSsing to perform in 2017 and that Tiny Desk concert has been viewed more than 5 million times.

Today, I bring you the music of Coreyah. According to the band, the name represents “inheritance,” and that’s evident in the way this six-piece presents old or traditional Korean music with a modern twist. It’s an uninhibited vision of Korean traditional music with some psychedelic rock, Balkan gypsy, even sounds from South America and Africa. You’ll see and hear instruments including the daegeum, a large bamboo flute and geomungo, a large Korean zither that lays on the floor.

When translated into Hangul, the Korean alphabet, Coreyah means “whale,” which is the group’s good luck charm. The music was recorded in the band’s music studio in Seoul, with COVID-19 shutting down most of the country. Strict social distancing is still ongoing in South Korea, though they are streaming their concerts to fans.

And just a note from the band: The geomungo player in this video is Park Dawool, as Coreyah member Na Sunjin was forced to miss this recording due to a personal emergency.

I have 6 web browsers, and 2 other computers I can do the same from if need be, plus my phone, and a linux box that also has Chrome and Firefox on it.

It’s still a pain in the ass though. Even some sites that claim they aren’t putting COVID-19 stories behind paywalls, are still putting some of it there.

A quick story to tell about my company. I work for a government contractor in Greenville, Tx, one of those large second-tier companies. During to virus, the company has been trying to keep us coming to work as much as we can. We now wear masks everywhere but our cubes. We have a daily online screen that we have to show to the gate guard. There are temperature checking cameras at the entrances to our buildings. And over the last three working days we were told about:
2 people on Friday that had tested positive the prior week
2 people on Monday
4 people on Tuesday

Prior to that we had a report of one a week ago, and 8 scattered from the end of March to the middle of June.

The have made people who came in contact with the positive people self-quarantine.

Looking at the locations, though they never get more specific than a building, it doesn’t currently look like anyone has gotten affected at the company itself. Instead, it was people getting sick outside and coming in with it.

Draw a 40 mile radius circle around Greenville, and you will catch about 98% of the employees, with over 70% being in Greenville and Rockwall. But I suspect a number of them, though not a majority, don’t wear their masks outside of work. The company is full of conservatives. I’ve even seen a QAnon sticker on one car. But as the virus spreads more and more into the rural areas, the more it is going to show up at my job.

Panhandle Public Health District’s Website is down, so no updates from the Old West.

My wife and I went to the store right after we had lunch with her brother and his wife. Mask use seems to be falling off in the area: about 30% of the people in the store (and none of the staff except a few) were using them.

That’s a problem here because of the lack of grocery stores. Within a sixty mile radius I only have the choice of Safeway in Scottsbluff, the co-op in Gering, Sonny’s and the butcher shop in Bridgeport, Safeway in Sidney, the general store here and the one in Dalton (both with limited selection), or the Oshkosh Superette (the only store enforcing distancing, numbers in the store, and masks). It looks like for the near future we will be taking the eighty-mile round trip to Oshkosh for the foreseeable future.

The large number of reports a couple days ago here was traced to a single golf outing at the county golf course. Golf wasn’t the problem (as social distancing is easy with that game, plus outdoors), the problem was the clubhouse and the locker room.

My brother- and sister-in-law are still on the road home to Texas.

My state governor (R-Ameritrade) is back on the idea of bashing “government schools” (public schools) in favour of private schools (his brother owns a chain of private schools).

Oklahoma is still run by conservatives.

If it’s like the Medicaid expansion passed by referendum in Nebraska, they’ll do the same thing as our Republicans. “Okay, so the referendum passed. Now we won’t pass the enabling legislation to enact it.”

Such referenda only demand the state enact legislation to make it happen. Now get Republican legislatures to do it.

The solution is to get rid of the Republican legislators. The problem is the GOP is extremely good at ginning up culture wars to get their voters out so that doesn’t happen, coupled with change scaring the bejesus out of a conservative voter.

Looking at my regional newspaper, it shows the superintendent of schools in Scottsbluff says the school district will open as scheduled.

The most cases of Covid-19 reported here are in the age group 10-19.

This fits in with conservative claims I’ve seen recently that schools “must” open because children “must” be in schools.

Part of the reason my brother-in-law is headed back to Texas now is his school district is requiring normal opening as well (he is a teacher). His wife (an immunologist when she lived in the Soviet Union) sees a disaster for his school district.

She’s been trying to get him to say “nope” because of his heart bypass surgery last year. He is complying with his school district’s return to work order because he is one year away from qualifying for his retirement.

“DC,” as it is often abbreviated by locals, is already a “state.” It is a state of corruption, crime, and dysfunction. The only reason Democrats favor the nation’s capital becoming a state is that it would gain two senators, who would almost certainly be Democrats and its “delegate,” Eleanor Holmes Norton, could then vote in the House. Currently she can only participate in committee hearings with the permission of the chairperson.

Why the scare quotes around delegate? She is in fact the delegate. “DC” is abbreviated that way by everyone, not “locals.”

As for DC gaining two senators who are Democrats, could that be because Republican policies are overtly racist, as well as crap?

I have a problem with my co-workers. Most of them in front of supervisors will wear a mask. A good part of them only cover their mouths and leave the nose exposed. When they are away from the supervisors they take off the masks completely. Like an idiot I do not take off my mask until I eat or drink and when I get home.

Here in my area mask use is near 100% and we’re still seeing a surge. It’s probably from bars which have now closed again and churches which are still allowed to hold services. I have friends who have gone to restaurants, I haven’t talked to them since. That was 2 weeks ago. I’m still not venturing out much. I have the blue surgical masks and some KN-95 masks. I have no problem breathing through either.

Since the regional newspaper was too cowardly to print my letter defending freedom of the press from the police last week, maybe they will print this one I just sent (LOL no, the publisher is a Trumpist).

With outlets around the world now reporting on Russia putting bounties on American servicemembers in Afghanistan, no Republican has condemned that action.

The White House Press Secretary has given a dizzying array of excuses, none of which amount to condemnation of Russia or proposals for action. Republican politicians are headed for the exits when questioned. That includes those who represent us in the Panhandle.

Perhaps if Russia has paid the Taliban to kneel before a US flag we would hear performative outrage from the GOP.

I am not the only veteran who is outraged by the GOPs stunning cowardice, hiding behind the Administration’s skirts.

Today is Bobby Bonilla Day!

The former Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets player is set to receive $1.19 million dollars today as part of a deferred contract agreement when the Mets bought out the remainder of his contract in 2000. Bonilla has been receiving the annual payments since 2011 and will continue to do so until 2035.

I remember playing blackjack at Caesars Palace in early 2002. Bonilla sat down at my table, having just ended his career after brief stints in Atlanta and St. Louis. Shook his hand and could not believe the size of his meat hooks. And, yes, he was using a match bet coupon at a $25 table.

Nice guy who clearly had a great agent to ensure his client’s long-term financial security.

Most of that money got invested in real estate in and around Phoenix, Arizona when it was a major boomtown in the 70’s and 80’s…

Meanwhile, in Prague:

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned this week that the pandemic was not even close to being over, but in the Czech Republic, a party has been held to give the coronavirus a “symbolic farewell”.

Thousands of guests sat at a 500 metre-long (1640ft) table on the Charles Bridge in Prague on Tuesday sharing food and drinks they had brought from home.

Guests were encouraged to share with their neighbours and there was no social distancing, something people in countries under lockdown will find hard to relate to.

There have been fewer than 12,000 infections in the Czech Republic, a country of 10 million. About 350 people have died.

The event’s organiser said the celebration was possible due to a lack of tourists in the famously charming city.

There’s still one significant outbreak, stemming from the Darkov coal mine in the city of Karvína (strict restrictions are still in effect there) a smaller outbreak at a nursing home in the city of Liberec (it’s under complete lockdown, and the staff and their families are under lockdown as well) and of course, a declining outbreak in Prague, where some restrictions are still in effect, such as wearing a facemask on public transit.

Everywhere else - including where I live - is entirely back to normal. Had to stop off at Tesco on the way home from work, and the shopping center it’s located in was busy, fairly typical for a Wednesday morning.

The governor of Moravian Silesia floated the idea of leasing Leoš Janaček Airport to the US Air Force; the airport is currently hemorrhaging money and it’s idle most of the time, so he figures, “Hey, might as well put it to good use.” It has a runway long enough to accommodate that big-ass Antonov plane and B-52’s, 747’s and A380’s can land there with no problems whatsoever. It’d be a perfect choice.

And it’d bring some much-needed American $$$ to the region to boot. Win win. The only real obstacles are the Prime Minister, who’s in hock to Russian and Chinese banks for his failing agribusiness and the Czech President, who’s become an inveterate Russophile as he not-so-quietly fades into senility.

Granted, that certainly wouldn’t go down too well with leading Czech politicians, many of whom are still wedded to pan-Slavism; after all, it was 19th century Czech intellectuals who started the pan-Slavist movement and a lot of Czechs are still stuck to that idea…..sadly, because they really have nothing else. If pan-Slavism somehow disappeared tomorrow, Czech culture would suffer a profound identity crisis.

It’s interesting what happened in the Slovak Presidential election. I really like President Caputova. What she does is have pro-West and liberal positions like being pro-EU, LGBT, climate change action, etc while also acknowledging the non Slovaks in her country. Her speaking in Rusyn has definitely been appreciated as well. I’m definitely interested in seeing how a Biden administration plans to counteract Putin’s influence in the Slavic countries. I think we really need to expose what a bully tyrant Putin is and how little he actually cares about people and instead his own power. Point out how corrupt the fucker is too.

I can’t help but suspect that part of what is driving this is the spat of blatantly transparent efforts by police departments and their union bosses to fabricate cases of restaurant employees attempting to “poison” officers. Such as the case of the “tampon” in the Starbucks coffee, where the reporter who “broke” the case tried to lamely insist (after thousands had called bullshit) that the case had to have merit because the cop would be guilty of “filing a false report” if it turned out he’d lied.

The Czechs feel culturally insecure; more than a few Czechs I’ve known over the years have remarked that there’s an inferiority complex at play. They can’t quite decide whether they’re east or west, Slavs or (as one of my favorite students once put it) “Germans who talk funny.”

Of course, it’s up to them to decide. But Czechs are uncertain of themselves and until that gets sorted, one way or the other, it’s going to continue that way.

My FB gang was talking about the religious school funding ruling and we started speculating on the schools we could set up to cash in. There were suggestions for various Muslim, Hindu and Pagan schools.
I had two ideas:
1. Satanic Temple High (which we could bill as “the best damn party school you ever heard of.”)
2. Aztec Traditional Middle School, where misbehaving and lazy students could be threatened with sacrifice on the high altar in the cafeteria. This approach would no doubt meet with approval from conservative disciplinarian parents

I have a student who’s a bit like Trump. He’s terrified of any form of change whatsoever, even though he admits that changes are necessary. He and I can have lively debates; when he once remarked that, “There’s no need for change, as things have been working well for decades now and given us social stability” to which I retorted, “Once upon a time, we used to toss virgins into volcanoes in the name of social stability but you don’t see anyone doing that anymore.” He laughed and conceded the point.

Sometimes, change is necessary and sometimes, that change is painful; we have to look into the mirror and recognize the ugliness within. But we cannot shy away from it - we have to confront it and make efforts to change things, not only for ourselves and our time, but for future generations, so that they may live in a more just and equitable world.

Senators typically have less experience as leaders, but personal knowledge/experience comes into play - McCain, Dole had decades of leadership roles in the Senate; both had military experience too.

Of all those mentioned, Obama had the least amount of traditional kinds of experiences associated with being a president - no military experience, no executive branch experience at any level, and limited experience in Congress.

Trump had absolutely no experience at all. None. His business experience was that he inherited a real estate business and required bailouts; outside that real estate business, he went ahead and needed bankruptcies and failed outside what he’d consider a core competency.

3.5 years later, he’s still a failure in everything he’s done.

The “so what” (IMO), is that this shows that the “MSM” is going to stick with its same-old, same-old “horse race” and “both sides” narrative for their campaign/election coverage, and also, obviously, never give up their bedrock principle that “Republican rule” is the only normal situation for American politics, and that anything that contradicts or shades that narrative has to be reflexively countered.

Even if by shallow BS like an “enthusiasm gap” - Really, SO FUCKING WHAT? All this crap proves is that Trump-humpers are a fanatical cult. And a minority cult, at that. A vote is a vote, whether it is cast with a lot of, or little enthusiasm, indifference, resignation, or nose-holding disgust. What ultimately counts are the number of votes: motivation is only partially relevant.
