Trump Vows: No Pay Raise for US Troops Over Renaming Confederate-Named Military Bases

Politics • Views: 21,802

Last night, while gumming his customary pre-sleep cheeseburger, our deranged president tweeted out a threat loaded with racism on several levels.

For some reason (I wonder what it could be?) Trump’s racist slurs against native Americans don’t get the same attention as his other racist slurs, of which there are many.

But once again, he’s displaying the political genius for which he’s known. This time, he’s threatening to veto a bipartisan (incredibly rare these days) military spending bill that includes money for research into the COVID-19 pandemic, and a 3 percent pay raise for US troops.

All because the bill also contains an amendment that would change the names of 10 military bases named after infamous, traitorous Confederate generals.

Trump’s message to the military: no pay raises unless the racism continues!

It’s all about pandering to the racist white supremacist GOP base.

Never mind that a majority of the nation wants these bases renamed, the Army has recommended the name changes, and that it’s included in a bipartisan spending package that includes pay raises for the troops.

Trump’s against pay raises for the troops. He’s against renaming bases. He’s against America (again).

“Fragged” implies it was done on purpose. He was shot by his own troops, but by accident and in the dark.

But yeah, get him off public property. I admire him greatly as a general and tactician (just like Erwin Rommel or Walter Model) but there is no need to venerate the cause he fought for.

They lost their mother young iirc. But yeah Laura was an Unionist through and through. Again this is why excusing him because of his state is wrong. Laura, Generals Scott/Thomas, & thousands of other Virginians and it’s actually why we have West Virginia today chose the Union over slavery.

Unfu…. nope. Totally fucking believable. Wishful thinking isn’t a strategy, plan, or even remotely related to reality. It’s the thing furthest from reality. It’s not going to disappear.

Why wont it disappear?

Tell ‘em why it wont disappear:

Because the fucking know nothing GOPers made the US a vector for uncontrolled spread, and now that we’re not able to contain the spread, it will continue to rage unchecked nationwide, spread back to other countries if they don’t have containment efforts in place, and it’ll continue to whip around the world.

Had we contained it per the pandemic playbook, we would have been in a position to reopen normally and while we might see flareups in places with localized shutdowns, we’d be able to move to reopen in time. We didn’t do anything right about anything at any time with the federal response. And states have been uneven in their approaches too - causing even more problems.

That’s why the economy collapsed. That’s why we have 15% unemployment, and covid19 will be around for the foreseeable future.

UPDATE:
And don’t get me started on masks. The GOP politicized the fuck out of wearing them, and even now Trump can’t be bothered with them. This is why we can’t flatten the curve and stop the spread. Too many Trumpists.

MLB should follow, but wont. They’ll go through the motions all while cases surge in TX and FL and CA.

Nothing about this proposed season makes sense. Better to be safe and lose revenue than play and potentially lose players to covid19.

Some reports were that there’s a contingency of MLB owners that want to cancel the season. Basically, they’re whiny bitches because they won’t be able to sell tickets/concessions so they won’t make as much as they would have otherwise.

If I could be in charge of sports, I would turn baseball into a promotion/relegation system. 30 teams at each of 4 levels; four go up, four go down.

Wonder if they’ll disclose all the cases they didn’t tell us about up to now…

I suppose it could mean they want to show that they aren’t in a bad way in terms of hospital capacity. Seems more likely to be the other way, though—i.e. that people need to know if they go to the hospital whether they will be able to be admitted (if necessary).

Stonewall Jackson, the Uber is here to take you to the slag heap. (Ol’ Stonewall was fragged by his own men)

My ex’s family came from a Central Virginia farm. (And were all really nice folks.) Being more familiar than I, my ex, and her father and mother gave me a tour of Richmond. They brought me in from the northwest and we drove to Monument Avenue. We turned onto monument avenue at the Stonewall Jackson monument. The Confederate statues are placed so they are facing south. Which meant that my first glimpse of Monument Avenue was of the North end of Jackson’s South facing horse.

I of course turned to my father-in-law and said “Well, that’s a fine welcome”. He laughed.

This is fascinating

By 62% to 28%, Americans say they’d favor a government rule in the area where they live requiring people to wear a face mask when they are in public and around other people. By 69% to 24%, they say they’d favor local stores instituting policies that require people to wear a face mask while shopping.

But the real interesting part is they broke it down by party affiliation and city/suburbs vs rural areas. The only group below 50% support are Republicans in rural areas. Even Republicans in cities and suburbs support mask wearing requirements.

And then there’s the rare bit of polling that actually finds the crazification factor at .5:

A 44% plurality say doing so equally protects the wearer and others, with 10% believing it mostly protects the wearer, 27% that it mostly protects those around the wearer, and 13% that it carries no benefits at all.

“no confirmation that anyone has been killed because of the program” is a very weaselly way to frame it. Sure, the Taliban may have continued fighting regardless of the program, but the extra money probably helped support their actions. Plus, it’s entirely possible that the program may have convinced the Taliban to keep fighting instead of negotiating some sort of peace.

Huh, didn’t have “recycling criminal conspiracy” on my score card, but here we are. Basically, these guys smuggled material from Arizona to California in order to collect the CRV (our version of the deposit). The headline says “Truckers could lose rigs” so it’s not like someone in Havasu took a bag of cans to Blythe:

The suspects, targeted in a months-long investigation, allegedly brought truckloads of nonredeemable material from Arizona to storage facilities and recycling centers in Southern California in order to redeem the material for money and defraud California’s CRV fund.

Truckers allegedly took a long, circuitous route in order to avoid inspection by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Not to mention what hunting tool(s) we have to use. Will there be a bow/crossbow season? Shotgun (00 buck or slug) season or rifle season only? All the above perhaps?

There’s a certain absurdity to the Hatch Act in that it requires the president/AG/DOJ to prosecute employees of the executive branch, who most likely would be acting on behalf of/at the direction of the president. That circle sort of makes it unenforceable unless the president didn’t want the actions to happen.

I probably wouldn’t agree on things with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but I never once got the feeling that he doesn’t truly love and appreciate the United States of America. Unlike the current occupant of the Oval Office.

So here’s Arnold wearing a mask in public, showing more a sense of leadership - not to mention public responsibility - than the President of the United States. Notice the mask says “We’ll be back”. Heh.

[Embedded content]

all the president had to do was not ever make this an issue

it wouldnt have hurt his ‘ratings’ because no person sane or not would have ever though it possible - he might have suggested ‘stop eating’ for all the logic

The diary calls it the other Trump effect:

New polling from Gallup finds that 34% of Americans want to see more immigrants welcomed to the U.S., “the highest support for expanding immigration Gallup has found in its trend since 1965,” the organization said. “Meanwhile, the percentage favoring decreased immigration has fallen to a new low of 28%, while 36% think it should stay at the present level. This marks the first time in Gallup’s trend that the percentage wanting increased immigration has exceeded the percentage who want decreased immigration.”

Fun fact: Morello can shred with the best of them if he feels like it.

He certainly can, whenever he wants and wherever he thinks it will serve the song.

For some reason, I find myself looking at Quora way too often. Whatever algorithm they use has me seeing a lot of questions like that - who’s the best/worst guitarist, is Ron Wood better than Keith Richards, why does everybody like player X even though he is bad at guitar, etc. It is all such nonsense. Music is an art form. If a player effectively communicates the intended emotion, etc. then they are, by definition, a good player.* If you like listening to them, they are a good player.
Unfortunately I sometimes see it from people who should know better. I recently read a column at, I think, Premier Guitar and in it there was mention of Jeff Beck’s “errors.” Dude said something along the lines of “Beck will sometimes bend a note a little sharp or a little flat to increase tension.” Dude, you just explained why it was never an error in the first place! You even said it was deliberate! DOY!!!

Sorry for the rant - had to vent, cuz it has been getting under my skin for weeks now.

* I am not claiming that proficiency is not required or is not a good thing. I just hate this dumb idea that there is a single metric by which every player, in every genre, can be ranked in one big list.

Robert Sobel, a real world economic historian, wrote about “America losing the war for independence” in “For Want of a Nail” an alternate history work written as a history text book for undergrads.

In this case, the original American states + lots of the Louisiana purchase joined with an uber Canada, but the bitterenders (my name not his) went out west, took over Mexico and basically became a hybrid Confederate/Mexican Manifest-Destiny state.

Per StarTrib

A pharmaceutical industry group is suing the state of Minnesota over its new insulin affordability program, which takes effect Wednesday.

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, or PhRMA, says the program the Legislature passed in April is unconstitutional and that drugmakers already offer alternatives to help people with diabetes. They are seeking a permanent injunction barring the state from enforcing the insulin act.

“A state cannot simply commandeer private property to achieve its public policy goals,” says PhRMA’s complaint, filed Tuesday in district court. “The Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits states from attempting to solve societal problems in this draconian manner. Because the Act takes private property for public use without paying just compensation, it is unconstitutional and should be enjoined.”

Gov. Tim Walz has a news conference with the advocates who fought for the insulin assistance scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. They plan to celebrate the implementation of the measure, named the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act in honor of a man who died because he was not able to afford his insulin.

(There follows fifteen seconds of restrained and sycophantic laughter.)

Prince: Very witty Wilde. Very very witty.

Whistler: (John Cleese) There is only one thing in the world worse than being witty, and that is not being witty.

(Fifteeen more seconds of the same.)

Oscar: I wish I had said that Whistler.

Whistler: You will, Oscar, you will. (more laughter)

Oscar: Your Highness, do you know James McNeill Whistler?

Prince: Yes, we’ve played squash together.

Oscar: There is only one thing worse than playing squash together, and that is playing it by yourself. (silence) I wish I hadn’t said that.

Whistler: But you did, Oscar, you did. (a little laughter)

Prince: Well, you must forgive me Wilde, but I must get back up the Palace.

Oscar: Your Majesty, you’re like a big jam doughnut with cream on the top.

Prince: I beg your pardon?

Oscar: Um… It was one of Whistler’s.

Whistler: I didn’t say that.

Oscar: You did James, you did.

Prince: Well Mr. Whistler? (The Prince of Wales stares expectantly at Whistler.)

Whistler: I meant, Your Majesty, that uh, like a doughnut your arrival gives us pleasure and your departure merely makes us hungry for more. (laughter) Right, Your Majesty is like a stream of bat’s piss.

Prince: What?

Whistler: It was one of Wilde’s.

Oscar: It sodding was not! It was Shaw!

Prince: Well Mr. Shaw?

Shaw: (Michael Palin) I… I merely meant, Your Majesty, that you shine out like a shaft of gold when all around is dark.

Purple Martins are voracious. They’re sometimes finicky about houses, but I’ve seen them move onto an array of drilled gourds on a pole.

we’re up to 22 cases (no deaths) in my county (population~14,000 but really spread out since we’re geographically yuge). No idea where those cases are because that’s sekrit information that the health department won’t disclose even a clue as to location.

Anyway, I’ve noticed that the Kroger in Mason County is pretty much about 90% folks wearing masks (I was disappointed to see a perky little blonde in tiny shorts who was very visibly preggers and NOT WEARING A MASK). The Save-A-Lot in Fleming County: only a couple of customers without masks; same for the Dollar General in Lewis County. The little locally-owned IGA in Lewis County? Not ONE SINGLE MASK ON ANYONE, not a customer, not an employee.

There are two Walgreen’s stores that are close my house. I used to go to the smaller of the two because it was closer and easy to get to after work, but the last couple times I’ve gone there, not all the employees were wearing masks. The chatty maskless guy manning the front counter was the final straw, and now I go to the other store where every employee and most customers are mask-compliant. I can’t understand why a company like Walgreen’s (a freaking drug store) would leave wearing a mask up to the local managers.

I’m in Frankfort, and I see lots of maskless Kroger customers. Fortunately, I read that passing contact is not as dangerous as extended, close contact, like in a bar.

I was just pointing out that Morello’s proficiency in what I consider a pretty outmoded style is pretty high. I’m actually more interested in the direction he went - I can only take a certain amount of shreddy guitar players.

Yeah, and although I knew what you were saying (and not saying) I kind of hijacked it and dragged it in another direction. I sentence myself to five, four three 2 minutes of listening to soulless shredding.
RE the shreddy shreddersons, it wears thin pretty quick for me too. In some instances it strikes me as a substitute for imagination or emotion.

Bird banding was the most (only) fun at my boarding highschool. Our Bio lab was a registered EBBA site. We used to hike miles to an abandoned commercial greenhouse with a 50’ high chimney. The swifts would form a funnel formation and spin into it over 15 minutes or so. We never did get access to band nestlings, though we once carried a ladder 10 miles. Swift nestlings are ugly/cute— about one third of their mass is feet, so they can cling to the walls in their early weeks.

Indiana priest slurs Black Lives Matter as ‘maggots and parasites’ trying to create a ‘new species of human’

An Indiana priest compared Black Lives Matter protesters to “maggots and parasites” during his weekly message.

Father Theodore Rothrock, of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carmel, denounced the civil rights movement and the destruction of monuments honoring Confederate leaders and other historic figures, reported the Indianapolis Star.

“The only lives that matter are their own and the only power they seek is their own,” Rothrock wrote to parishioners. “They are wolves in wolves clothing, masked thieves and bandits, seeking only to devour the life of the poor and profit from the fear of others. They are maggots and parasites at best, feeding off the isolation of addiction and broken families, and offering to replace and current frustration and anxiety with more misery and greater resentment.”

I’m not Catholic but I have a feeling the boss in Rome wouldn’t like this:

“Sorry, father, his Holiness Pope Francis has issued an encyclical declaring you a maggot and a parasite. He commands you to pack your stuff and get the hell out.”

Starlings aren’t native to North America. I’ve read that Starlings and House Sparrows were introduced to the US by someone who loved Shakespeare and wanted the US to have all the birds that were mentioned in his plays. Sounds stupid enough to be true. Both birds are now considered undesirable invasives. The book “Wild About Birds” by a MN DNR birding expert actually recommends that if you have too many House Sparrows around, you should trap them and kill them.

All because the bill also contains an amendment that would change the names of 10 military bases named after infamous, traitorous Confederate generals.

Trump’s message to the military: no pay raises unless the racism continues!

Hmm. There is a subdivision near me that has an old brick chimney kept in place at the front entrance. I always thought it was weird, like part of an old house that held sentimental value for someone important. Now I wonder if it’s a nesting site.

My house in Middle GA had resident chimney swifts.

Even tho I periodically swept the chimney to reduce creosote buildup, I figured the chimney swifts assisted in the process.

I found the sound they made flying in and out of the chimney to be soothing, and their return a harbinger of spring.

while the hospitals that I work for are in Washington state, I live in AZ and back in February, we were doing things like setting up temporary emergency locations and the like because we were privy to the data coming out of China and watching Italy unfold and our administration too pains to try and prepare for the worst. I’m not saying that AZ did or did not, but with the issues with getting test kits, which tests to be run and the severe continued shortage of not only paying for PPE but getting it delivered, I’m still dismayed that here we are witnessing what took place and unfolded elsewhere in the country and still are in shock that its happening here… but when you couple the re-opening of the country with a natural tendency to idiocy and multiple “news organizations” telling you its a hoax and that even if you do get it its just like the flu… well you get to watch the same shit unfold, it’s just that we’re now off-Broadway, so to speak.

we still have fuck all of a national response, not contact tracing and no well communicated game plan about what test to use and how to track those that have it and when you do have it, enough beds to take in everyone who’s sick. It’s Arizona, Texas and Florida now, don’t expect it will end here. For some reason, a lot of people don;t wish to hear cautionary tales.
