A New Version of One of Neil Finn’s Best: “Last Day of June” [VIDEO]

I can almost hear you thinking ……. L.A / Auckland ……. Last Day Of June 2020.
Images from this day Liam and E.J , music from this day Neil and Mitchell.

https://www.neilfinn.com

The firelight plays on me
The choir ignites behind me
The rising voice of discontent
All the guardian angels
You can bang the drum
Look what we’ve become
I hope there might be one of us
Who calls the tune
Last day of June

The so called third dimension
Hardly deserves a mention
The first and second stages
Have been confused for ages
Knowledge has been lost
How much does it cost
I hope there might be one of us
Who calls the tune
Last of June
Who breaks the news
Last day of June

The city draws it’s breath in
I can almost hear it thinking
There are people within my walls
See their wild disorder
Driving their machines
Swarming like a million bees
I hope there might be one of us
Who calls the tune
Last day of June
Who speaks the truth
Last day of June
Who breaks the news
Last day of June

Ooh, not bad. I made a homemade sourdough in my bread machine the other day. The leftover pieces (the next day, after we consumed 3/4 of the loaf fresh with butter) turned into a glorious bologna, cheese, and mayo sandwich. If that seems like a waste of good sourdough bread, consider that the bread elevated the humble ingredients into an actually delicious sandwich.

You know what I find most offensive about this shit from Scott Adams?

The fact that under Trump, it really has been open season, but on PoC, women, the poor, generally any disadvantage or out-group in this country, and we have seen actual politically motivated huntings, and outside of the attempted shooting of Scalise, it’s almost always been right-wing violence. Proud Boys, Boogaloos, the Moron Labe types, Pizzagate, etc.

Like, motherfucker, you projecting motherfucker, welcome to life as a fucking non-white liberal in fucking America.

I don’t think he should cancel all campaign rallies. There has to be a way we can make a virtual mass gathering happen. Yes, yes, I know, think of the bandwidth it’d take to make that happen, but there has to be a way somehow.

I can’t see any way that he can have a well-attended rally without risking people getting too close to each other. It’s kind of natural for people to want to get close to the front. Even if it’s outside, he can’t guarantee that people won’t wind up in a dangerous setting.

I wasn’t saying that he should have in-person rallies, but I would love to see a way where people can interact with the campaign event virtually (rather than just watching a live stream).

I agree. I know the Coronavirus pandemic has tragically warped our perceptions (and practices) of public engagement, but I’m not sure the old-fashioned “front porch campaign” - which is what it sounds like Joe is trying to formulate - is really the best model for 21st-Century politicking. Maybe it is, but -even given the Dems’ huge advantage this year, I have to be nervous that it may not be.
But I won’t be unhappy to be proved wrong.

Good evening.
Life has been unaccountably busy here. The latest project of “let’s replace the carpet in the walk out basement with some nice carpet squares” turned into two glorious weeks of mastic adhesive scraping. I’m too old for this stuff. But, it does look nice. Now to finish the stairs. Getting the carpet off the stairs resulted in a fair amount of blood loss due to the dozens of staples deemed necessary on each step-and that was in addition to tack strips. Anyway, a couple days of stair painting and I’ll be good to go.

Meanwhile, I’ve been trying to keep up with reading here, veering between hope (Trump isn’t getting much love from the majority of potential voters) and despair (we have no direction or cohesion in dealing with the pandemic.) At least 2020 is half over.

Interesting.
My favorite cheese sandwich is from a local coffee shop.
Sourdough bread
A slice of cheddar
4 slices of apple
2 slices of bacon cut in half. Precooked.
A slice of provolone

Butter the bread on the outside, stack everything and grill to taste.

The world is putting America in quarantine

Europe, where most countries have largely contained the virus (after initial screw-ups), is looking at America with slackjawed horror. The European Union is likely to close its borders to American travelers when it restores some international travel on July 1. Canada will most likely keep its U.S. border mostly closed when the current agreement expires on July 21.

Around the world, it is beginning to sink in how profoundly rotten the United States is. Unless America manages to turn things around, it will slide from the center of the international order to a peripheral, mistrusted basketcase, and it will deserve it.

Putting my moth-chewed G-2 hat back on for a while, I think allied intelligence has developed significant; indeed, “smoking gun;” sources within the Russian disinformation/influence complex. They will not share this with US agencies for fear that compromised Trump administration officials with unlimited clearance will burn the sources. In fact, US agents who develop such sources in the field may be handing them off to foreign contacts without submitting detailed reports.

o/’

What a day, what a day,
For an auto-da-fe!
What a lovely summer sky!

What a day, what a day,
For an auto-da-fe!
It’s a lovely day for hanging
And for watching people die!

(I always felt the final act of Candide drags pretty hard, but the first couple of hours are absolutely classic.)

Guys.

It’s been almost 40 years since I saw History of the World Part 1. I liked it, though not as much as most of his other films. I don’t remember that song at all. Sorry, but it’s not a priority with me.

Summer certainly has here in suburban Northern Virginia. Although I have not heard any cuckoo’s recently. Neighbors on two sides do have chickens, though. Does that count?

I learned last night that in one second, our sun produces more energy than all the energy produced by humans in our entire existence.

Yes, thank you for asking. The last couple of days have by far been as close to normal as I can think of since three weeks ago. The staff at Memorial Hermann are incredible. The day I had my angiogram, it felt so routine, it was like going to get an oil change.
