At Last: Jeffery Epstein’s Procurer Ghislaine Maxwell Arrested by FBI on Sexual Abuse Charges

If, like me, you’ve been wondering why Jeffrey Epstein’s long-time associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who allegedly helped procure and groom children for Epstein to molest, was not under arrest… well, at last she is.

And now I can’t help wondering if, like Epstein, she’ll also have an “accident” before she can testify in court.

Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime associate of disgraced money manager Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested and charged with conspiracy and enticing minors to engage in sex.

Maxwell, the daughter of the late British publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell, was arrested Thursday morning in New Hampshire, FBI spokeswoman Adrienne Senatore said. Prosecutors have scheduled a noon press conference in New York.

The six-count indictment comes almost a year after Epstein was arrested on sex-trafficking charges, after his private plane landed at a New Jersey airport. Epstein killed himself in a federal jail in August.

The new case signals that prosecutors are aggressively pursuing allegations that others helped Epstein abuse underage girls. Maxwell, who was close to Epstein for years, has long denied that she was involved in Epstein’s actions.

Maxwell, 58, was a central figure in Epstein’s world before he pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to two state counts of soliciting prostitution, one involving a minor. They were pictured together at events in Manhattan. Employees at Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion, the epicenter of the 2008 lawsuit, referred to her as the “lady of the house.”

From 1994 to at least 1997, Maxwell schemed with Epstein to entice minor girls to be sexually abused by him, according to the indictment. The victims, described as “multiple minor girls,” were as young as 14 years old when Maxwell allegedly selected and “groomed” them by luring them to Epstein’s homes in Manhattan, Palm Beach and New Mexico, the U.S. said.

Maxwell was paid by Epstein to manage his properties and involved with him in a sexual relationship, the U.S. said. Prosecutors included in the indictment a photograph of Epstein hugging Maxwell, as well as shots of homes where they say the assaults occurred.

At least three underage girls who were sexually abused by Epstein are described in the indictment, though not identified by name.

Maxwell is likely to appear in Manhattan federal court in coming days, where a judge may release her on bail or order her held in custody. She will also enter a formal response to the charges, and the judge may schedule a trial date.

Maxwell has been under public scrutiny since Epstein’s arrest last July. Until Thursday, the one-time British socialite had never been charged with a crime, and her whereabouts have been a mystery despite intense speculation. Media scrums formed at locations where she was rumored to be holed up, from an In-N-Out Burger in Los Angeles to a mansion on the rocky north shore of Boston.

After Robert Maxwell’s mysterious death in 1991, Mawell headed to New York, where she fell in with Epstein. They remained close even after the couple split, with Epstein describing Maxwell as his “best friend” in a 2003 Vanity Fair article.

Maxwell has been credited with introducing Epstein to the circle of business titans, academics and even royalty that he surrounded himself with. That included Britain’s Prince Andrew, who has said Maxwell introduced him to Epstein. The prince was forced to retire from public duties after a disastrous TV interview in November that did little to dampen speculation about his links to the late pedophile.

Maxwell’s social appearances, including at Chelsea Clinton’s wedding, started to wane after her name continued to appear in the depositions and complaints in lawsuits. Virginia Giuffre, who claims to have been a sex slave of Epstein, sued Maxwell for defamation in 2015, and the unsealing of files relating to that case on Aug. 9 made public details of Giuffre’s allegations against Maxwell as well as prominent business and political figures.

According to the indictment, Maxwell would first attempt to befriend victims prior to their abuse, asking them about their lives, schools and families. Maxwell and Epstein would spend time with the victims, taking them to movies or shopping. Some of these outings would involve Epstein and Maxwell together with the girls; on other occasions, Maxwell would socialize separately with the young victims, the U.S. said.

After developing a rapport with a victim, Maxwell would try to “normalize sexual abuse for a minor victim,” prosecutors alleged. She would do this by “discussing sexual topics, undressing in front of the victim, being present when a minor victim was undressed, and/or being present for sex acts involving the minor victims and Epstein,” prosecutors said.

I don’t care who else is implicated in the Epstein underage rape/sex abuse scandal.

Expose every last motherfucking one of them. Prosecute every last one. And then throw away the key.

I don’t care who else is named. Trump? Yup. Bill Clinton? Sure. Dershowitz? Rudy?

I don’t care. If anyone is named, prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law - no plea deals. They engaged in a conspiracy to traffic and benefit from raping children. End their lives as they know it. Take their property as compensation to the victims. End them.

There should be zero tolerance for anything even remotely resembling this stuff, and yet those in the Epstein orbit have avoided prosecution for decades thanks in no small part to a corrupt DA who decided to ignore the facts and evidence and let Epstein slip away all those years ago. Then Trump decided to resurrect this DA’s career as part of Trumpworld - as Labor Secretary (Acosta).

3 months ago, Trump was claiming that covid19 would just up and disappear on its own. He was busy claiming that it’d go away with warmer weather.

Just yesterday Trump was again claiming it’d go away on its own.

3 months and he hasn’t learned a goddamned thing. It’s the same baffling bulkshit, and the media regurgitates it without any qualms - like pointing out that he was wrong the first time, he’s still wrong, and he hasn’t learned a damned thing in the interim.

The states seeing the biggest increases are among the warmest states - AZ, TX, CA, and FL. Only 2 states meet current requirements for reopening - NY and RI. Everyone else falls short, but they’re reopening anyways. This is a massive failure, and it all falls on Trump and his disastrous handling. He’s refused to do anything about it except lie, project his failures on others, and deflect, distract, and deny responsibility.

Say 25,000 turn out at Mt. Rushmore. Rapid City has 75,000 people and is the closest big town. 3 hospitals/surgical centers with total of 400 beds. There’s about 250 ICU beds statewide, though the state had tried to surge to 1300 and realistically thought they’d need 600. Rapid City has about 60 of those ICU-type beds.

It’s situated on the banks of the Rio Grande so first flood, it gets swept away. Oh, and since it doesn’t connect with any other wall or fence or structure, all anyone has to do is walk up or downstream less than 1.5 miles and you’re able to avoid this altogether.

But the builder got himself qualified to get more of that government graft, so that’s all that mattered.

Would constant public shaming be punishment enough for her crimes if she gives up everyone else? I really don’t now. I don’t see her talking… or even surviving if she’s not given immunity.

Rural folks are going to be so screwed.

Fireworks also create a massive fire risk at Mount Rushmore. They’ve banned fireworks displays there for a decade. The few roads that lead to the memorial will be choked with parked cars if a large crowd shows up. This event could turn into an Irwin Allen movie.

Teddy's Person  Jul 2, 2020 • 11:38:11am

In the race to see who can beclown themsevles for Trump the hardest, may I present Andy Biggs (R-AZ).

“After two months of economic nightmares due to COVID-19 and our states’ reactions to the outbreak, the American economy is roaring back as we predicted. The fundamentals of our economy were very strong prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, and the pro-growth foundation that President Trump set over the past 3+ years is paying dividends in one of our nation’s most-uncertain times. Americans trust President Trump and his team to lead our economy back to prosperity because of his track record.

“As our economy is restored, it is imperative that President Trump is not undermined in his mission to return our economy to greatness. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx continue to contradict many of President Trump’s stated goals and actions for returning to normalcy as we know more about the COVID-19 outbreak. This is causing panic that compromises our economic recovery. We can protect our most vulnerable from the COVID-19 outbreak while still protecting lives and livelihoods of the rest of the population. It’s time for the COVID-19 task force to be disbanded so that President Trump’s message is not mitigated or distorted.” Source: Bigg’s Press Release

I think the dead bodies might be doing their fair share of contradicting Trump’s goals and action, such as they are.

Yup. Sturgis is not far from Rapid City and they get huge crowds complete with drunken debauchery and zero inhibitions. Lots of police interactions too. It’s a guarantee for a superspreader event. They’re going ahead with it despite covid19, but some of the events have been cancelled or altered.

The 2018 event saw nearly half a million people in attendance. They’re coming from around the nation and the world for it (as in past years). This would make Tulsa’s spreader event look like small potatoes.

Lindsey Graham on Fox and Friends this morning. I guess the gazillion hours spent on Benghazi are paying off in the form of talking points to defend the indefensible.

“Where were all these Democrats when Benghazi was on fire, when they were calling for help from the consulate?” Graham said, “The president of the United States Obama was briefed and went to bed and never called anybody for a day and a half while our people were being slaughtered in Benghazi. Where was the outrage then?”

I want Donald, Mitch, Lindsey, and Billy B to all share a cell soon. These motherfucking ghouls deserve to live out their miserable lives in one another’s company. We could watch it on pay-per-view. Apprentice: Federal Penitentiary Edition.

The fact that he’s in the hospital should tell us he’s pretty sick. A friend’s ex-husband caught the ‘rona and had a fever well over 100 for 6 days. He recovered but never went to hospital. But Cain is wealthy and connected, he could get admitted to the hospital for a stubbed toe.

re: #49 lawhawk

There is the five year rule.

As I noted back last month when the wingnuts were running around about all the jobs “created” in May, the terms of the PPP require businesses that want loan forgiveness to rehire their staff. Between that and the hasty “reopening” in recent months, the situation is fairly clear: We’re headed for another economic crash by September when Labor Day has passed but the virus has not. All the businesses that opened their doors for the summer crowd will close again because they’ve made what they can, while those that remain open will reduce staff in response to the thinning of their customer base.

Unless you live in a community that makes big money on Halloween or Thanksgiving, then the period between Labor Day and Christmas is going to be a massive kick in the teeth.

Just what fantasy world do they live in where he’ll have things “turned around” in two months?

- CV-19 is not magically going to stop being an issue, in fact it’s set up now to be the defining issue of the remainder of the year and into next. Once the summer vacation crowd go home, people will return to self-isolation, which means businesses that rely upon physical interactions will either scale back or just collapse altogether. You can look forward to a fall and winter plastered with companies filing for bankruptcy protection as the economy reality kicks in.

- The economy is not rebounding, at least not in the “V” fashion that wingnut economists predicted it would. What is showing in the numbers is the usual summer “sugar high” that occurs when businesses put on jobs to address the temporary increase in summer traffic. When those customers go home, the jobs go away and the economy stalls out again as the underlying issues remain.

- Both of these are going to contribute to the continuation (if not fuel the size of) racial protests into the fall and winter. You think shit is bad now? Wait until August, when the CARES Act has expired and the delayed effects of the economic crash begin to show up. All the social ills that have been put on hold because of the panicky response of Senate Repubs coming back like a damned tidal wave is gonna only add fuel to a fire that Trump absolutely refuses to realistically address.

tl;dr, any hope Repubs have that Trump is gonna fix all the problems dragging down his campaign in 2 months is pure self-delusion…or just pure BS, as if there’s a functional difference by this point.

I have to go to Target today. There’s an item I ordered that’s kind of close to being discontinued and all of the Amazon sellers had really crappy customer ratings. Target online had it available from a seller with equally crappy ratings, but I could return it no-hassle to a Target store if it was defective. I ordered one and it looked great so I ordered a second one and it’s broken. I’ve got everything printed out so hopefully I only have to spend about 5 minutes at the counter and then I’ll get out. I should probably order some beverages for front counter pickup too before I go. I should also take a shower and put on real clothing…

Precisely. He’s not going to magically become presidential in two months, so the only thing the Repubs are gambling on right now is that (once again) somebody steps in and saves him from himself. A viable vaccine is suddenly announced, the economy magically rebounds, and the protests die down as people go back to work as though nothing happened.

Their hopes that this was going to be an election about personalities and they’d have the opportunity to salvage Trump by destroying Biden have been thoroughly dashed.

I wonder if they’ve got everything priced to the nearest dollar. My local Chinese place is rounding everything down (which means the tip gets rounded up), and other places aren’t taking cash because of the coin shortage. An ice cream truck seems like it would be heavily cash-dependent.

Targetpractice  Jul 2, 2020 • 2:05:55pm

I’ve said for months now that the Repubs wrote the CARES Act with the belief that things would be “over” by August and the economy well on its way to recovery due to everything being “reopened,” thus reducing the immediacy of addressing CV-19 because people would view it with the same apprehension that they do flu season (i.e. something that comes and goes every year).

And in May, that didn’t seem like a bad bet, as the lead-time for new cases popping up had people fooled into believing that the first wave was coming to an end and we could avoid a second wave entirely. Now? Now it’s looking like they’ve got one month to get shit done before they crash into August with the country on fire again.

Which is why it was so irresponsible to open up before *any* of the CDC guidelines had been met. It’s going to be a grueling two weeks, regardless.

COVID numbers are in for Thursday 2nd July for the United Kingdom — 89 deaths, 576 positive tests. The trend is generally downwards but England is opening up pubs, restaurants etc. on Saturday. Greater Manchester police have cancelled all leave for their officers for that day.

Scotland has a population of about five million people, today it had one COVID-19 death and 5 new positive test cases. Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon AKA the “Nippy Sweetie” is still holding back from opening the floodgates while Westminster and PM Johnson whine and moan at her for failing to do what she’s been told to. Health in Scotland is a devolved issue under the control of local health boards and the Scottish Parliament and Sturgeon is taking no prisoners on this subject.

We’ve got elections for the Scottish Parliament coming up next year, the SNP are making themselves look good to a lot of potential voters in the way they’re dealing with this pandemic, after a rocky start regarding a flood of elderly COVID-19 victims in care homes that turned into superspreader hubs.

Not sure that testing is worthless at 7 days, but yeah the lag time makes the management effort even more difficult.

Something to think about is that in the first spike, there have been reasonable estimates that the counting was low by a factor of 5 to 8. You’ll never catch all the asymptomatics in real time, but before we get to exhausting testing capacity again very likely the count is under by a smaller amount, maybe (this is WAG) a factor of 2.

So 30k cases/day in April may be the equivalent of 90k cases a day in the current testing environment. I’m not trying to diminish the current problem - just look at the curve to see where things are headed - but keep in mind that numbers won’t directly compare.

Sorry, not sure if this is the actual home Maxwell bought, but seems likely. No, it’s not. It’s quite cheap for that much land and home size. 2.5 room townhouses cost $240K. It was a sweet deal because she paid in cash.

Every state that’s slapped some sort of requirement on their residents has pulled the same BS, exempting bars and restaurants because the only real way to stop them from being epicenters of new cases would be to close them and that would gut the entire “reopening” movement.

There’s an element of practicality to it. Eating and drinking while wearing a mask are extremely inconvenient. Personally, I would rather they either do like Minnesota had done for a while, opening sit-down restaurants for outdoor service only, or keep the indoor seating under more severe restrictions - say, 10% of capacity, maximum party size of 2, social distancing enforced by removing tables, plus what they already do now.

VA did something similar, allowing outdoor dining service at 50% capacity…for all of about 2 weeks. Then they caved to pressure from beach towns and reopened indoor seating at 50% capacity.

If you’re wondering how that’s gone, while the state as a whole is in a downward trend, the cities that insisted upon rushing forward in time for the summer beach crowd remain in the red as far as new cases go.

Yeah, ours are still at only 25% capacity. Mrs. Fish and I went out for our first sit-down date on Tuesday. It was actually scary - when we sat down, we were the only ones in the restaurant, but the place filled up fast. By the time we left, I was legitimately worried.

Biden’s comments on removing statues:

“The idea of bringing down all those Confederate monuments to Confederate soldiers and generals who strongly supported secession and maintaining slavery and going to war to do it, I think those statues belong in museums, they don’t belong in public places,” he continued.

“I think with regard to those statues and monuments, like the Jefferson Memorial, there’s an obligation that the government protect those monuments because they’re different. That’s a remembrance, it’s not dealing with revering somebody who had that view. They had much broader views. They may have had things in their past that were now and then distasteful, but that’s a judgment.”

The former vice president argued that local governments should lead in the peaceful removal of statues glorifying the leaders of the Confederacy. But he said that he understands the “anger and anguish” of those who would like to see them toppled by protesters.

“I can understand the anger and anguish that people feel by having for years and years been under the statue of Robert E. Lee if you’re an African American,” Biden said. “It’s always better to do it peacefully … the elected officials where those statues are have a responsibility to remove, put them in museums. Get them down … and don’t be surprised if someone pulls down the statue of Jefferson Davis. It’s better that they do not, but it’s fundamentally different than … grabbing Jefferson off his chair.”

If - and I stress IF - we’re experiencing “historically low crime rates”, it’s because even the CRIMINALS are smart enough to stay the fuck home so they don’t die of the goddamn plague.

If we have historically low crime rates then why do we need all those cops?

The irony is that this applies only to the Republican-only primary runoff 14 July. It bodes ill for any relaxation of mail-in or curbside voting here in Nov.

I’m starting to wonder if Republicans really are on the whole “COVID party” bandwagon of trying to intentionally infect people, at this point. Perhaps they’re trying to force the reopening discussion by saying, “Look, X% of people have already been infected thanks to our malfeasance, so we might as well just open everything back up and get back to business before November.”
