A Sublime Set From Fabiano Do Nascimento: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

YouTube

Instead of politics I’m starting off today’s posts with a gorgeous set from Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento. It just feels better.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Abby O’Neill | July 2, 2020
The seraphic sounds by Brazil-born, L.A.-based guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento are hypnotic and transcendent, an amalgamation of Afro-Brazilian jazz, folklore, bossanova and samba. The combination of his overdubbed rhythmic and melodic guitar lines, coupled with the delicate hands of piano player David Bergaud and drummer Julien Cantelm, just seem to hit differently. It’s a wandering journey that put me into what feels like the Samadhi state in meditation, where the brain frequency surrenders and the soul completely takes over. Fabiano and his band flow into the first number, “Nanã,” a folkloric composition that “is the spirit that comes from African lineage and represents the forest … and is the primordial mother of earth.” On “Etude,” a composition by Fabiano inspired by Cuban classical guitar virtuoso Leo Brouwer, he is joined by new accompaniment: Adam Ratner on guitar and Leo Costa on drums and chocalho. His love for his motherland Brazil — an “endless foundation of inspiration” — is threaded deeply into the tapestry of his sound and ethos. If you’re looking for a musical moment of zen, this set comes highly recommended.

SET LIST
“Nanã”
“Etude”
“Tributo”

MUSICIANS
Fabiano do Nascimento: guitar, vocals; Julien Cantelm: drums; Leo Costa: drums; Adam Ratner: guitar; David Bergaud: piano

Probably not by real politicians, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Tucker thinks that if some ignorant failed businessman can become president primarily on the strength of his Apprentice reality show, then certainly a trust fund baby like Tucker who speaks in coherent sentences and has a devoted television following would have a shot at the position.

The Washington Post editorial board laid out a painful truth about the coronavirus to President Donald Trump in its latest column.

“The reality is that the virus is not under control; it is in control,” the newspaper’s board wrote in its editorial Thursday that denounced Trump’s ongoing attempts to downplay the rapid resurgence of COVID-19 in states nationwide.

The board called out Trump’s “magical thinking” on the pandemic.

Trump bore responsibility “for encouraging governors to loosen the restrictions too early,” it added.

“It was a bad miscalculation,” said the board, which called Trump’s claim to have saved “millions of lives” with his widely criticized handling of the public health crisis a “historic delusion, and it has consequences in human lives.”

except for the ‘miscalculation’ part.
that implies some thought and calculation went into arriving at a direction/decision/policy

ps - covid rising in 40 states (there only are 50)

Before the site crashes on me again, I’ve been having problems with LGF since Wednesday afternoon. I can sign in and go to a post, but if there’s more than around 100 comments, when I click on that the page crashes. It’s only happening on my iPhone and iPad. For both safari and chrome. My desktop is an HP and no problems there. I’ve restarted both, cleared caches, other stuff recommended online. Any ideas? I use the phone the most to get here, never really had issues before. It also says the site isn’t secure at the top of the page. I may not be able to read the answer til later if there is one to be had. Help?

Is the sheriff thinking that wearing a mask would put his deputies in danger of being harassed by Trump’s buffoons?

First, that “not secure” message isn’t as scary as it looks. It just means that the main site is not being served with HTTPS (yet). All the sections that require you to enter any private data, like the login screen, ARE using HTTPS, so it’s secure where it needs to be. I keep meaning to work on converting the whole site to HTTPS but things get in the way.

Second, if you’re having problems with longer threads, try using the “Spy” link instead. It loads fewer comments at a time and updates automatically, so it should work better in limited memory situations like an iPhone.

He’s saying it’s optional, but at the same time equating not wearing a mask with “freedom”. Any subordinate would read that message clearly.

OT — Bibi is belatedly shutting Israel down again. Is Israel’s now burgeoning coronavirus caseload due to the superspreading religious services? We reform and conservative have taken to zoom for our services (though some Trumpsters among us have consistently felt this was unwarranted), but the orthodox community would likely object to use of the technology, especially for holidays and Shabbat.

The Smithsonian channel is running a show about volcanoes. One thing I just learned is Hawii’s big island is actually the youngest one, at only 500,000 years old. The volcano on it is continually producing lava at the equivalent of 60k cement trucks per day. It makes me wonder how long it will be before the island is an island-continent like Australia.

That won’t happen, even on a geological time scale. The reason is that the pacific plate is moving relative to the Hawaiian hot spot. All of the smaller islands in Hawaii were once the ‘big island’ until they moved too far away from the hot spot. There’s even a chain of sea mounts (underwater mountains too short to break sea level and be islands) that stretches all the way to the Aleutian trench.

And young earth creationists look at this stunning evidence of millions of years of geological processes in action and pretend it means something completely false.

OT — Bibi is belatedly shutting Israel down again. Is Israel’s now burgeoning coronavirus caseload due to the superspreading religious services?

It’s only a part of it i’m afraid, although a substantial number of cases this week were in the ultra-orthodox areas of Jerusalem.
Unfortunately it’s a much wider problem - Israel was doing really well at first on the COVID-19 front, going to great lengths to avoid folks from getting infected. This included city-by-city lockdowns during the Passover and other holidays in the country with roadblocks and everything.
And it worked; patient numbers reached a high of just over 10,000 before dropping steadily all the way to ~1700.

So what happened, you might ask?
They opened the country too damn early, that’s what. After weeks and weeks of lock-downs and growing skepticism that there were political motivations behind the restrictions and that the virus was “just another flu”***, restrictions were lifted despite medical recommendations that they be in place for another couple of week.
The first weekend after it was ok to resume ordinary life? Hundreds of thousands of people took advantage of the excellent weather to crowd the national parks and restaurants, and resume large-scale religious groupings. All of it with no regard to social-distancing and without heeding the mandatory mask law (500NIS fine if cought without one - passed by the state but barely enforced)
The result was basically what we’re seeing now: steady rise of hundreds of new cases per day to over the all-time record number of cases today, effectively wiping away the efforts of the previous months.

Thank you for the explanation. So Bibi, after first working hard and doing what was right, pulled a Trump and Israel is suffering for it. No doubt after Israel’s initial spectacular success, he kept on hoping that the initial increases would level off — and so he waited too long to shut things down again.

The reason there is a chain of islands is because they are moving above the hot spot, then they start eroding and a new island is born. So the big island won’t stay there long enough to get as big as Australia.

If the corporate R’s, who are pretty good at math, insist on a competent capable nominee next time, never mind the culture war bullshit… Hogan and Baker might have broader appeal than they did a year ago.

Problem is they are a small faction. The vast majority of GOP voters are evangelical white nationalists, and they want fascism.

re: #65 (((Archangel1)))

*** - It’s worth noting that the “Just Another Flu” part of the Israeli pandemic equation has almost exclusively US origins, which tie into a much larger issue I’ve mentioned over the years.
[Warning: lengthy post follows]

This goes all the way back to the late 1990s and early 2000s, a time when Israel’s new and growing media outlets (cable/satellite) offered only two channels for worldwide news - BBC News and CNN International.

During the events of the 2nd Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the early 2000s, both news channels gradually adopted what was deemed to be an anti-Israeli bias in its coverage of the conflict, one that grew worse from week to week.
At the height of the conflict around late 2002, the stance of BBC News’ international desk became viewed (rightfully so, IMHO) as outright hostile to Israel, often to obscene levels. Despite public outrage, the Israeli government took no action against the network. This was also the case with CNN International, which was viewed by Israelis as having crossed many lines in its coverage at the time, especially on the part of its well-known anchor Christiane Amanpour, who was viewed as offering very one-sided coverage of events, in particularly minimizing or outright ignoring deaths of Israeli civilians killed in attacks perpetrated by Hamas/Islamic Jihad terrorists. In one particularly notorious incident, the network gave the mother of a terrorist who had bombed a playground (targeting and killing 17 children and 4 adults) lengthy time to spout support for his actions while barely giving the parents of one of his victims a minute to speak before kicking them off the air.
This, along with other instances, was the final straw for the Israeli government, which decided to respond amid substantial public pressure across the political divide. Both networks offered apologies, but it was too little, too late, and in the wake of this, CNN was effectively kicked out of the country for a time, and action was taken against BBC News as well.

Fast forward to the present - what does any of this have to do with the Israeli views on COVID-19?
Well, in late 2003, these events and the actions of both outlets let to a decision in Israel to introduce a new global news channel to the Israeli media landscape.
Guess who got the pick? Fox F*cking News, which was brought into the mix as an “unbiased news outlet” (feel free to laugh).

“It’s a lefty hoax” is a common complaint about COVID-19 heard in the country. Does that sound familiar? You can guess where the Israelis get it from.

Fox has been the primary source of international news for millions of TV-watching Israelis over the past decade and a half, taking in the channel’s biases as a result. This is a significant part of Trump’s appeal in Israel, and why a substantial part of the country is basically lost to the Democratic party and its leaders for a generation in my personal opinion.

For the record: Mrs. Fish’s family has a number of COVID denialists and hold some fringe Christian beliefs regarding sickness and supernatural healing that make them very dangerous to be around during a pandemic. There’s a reason why HCQ is back in the news. From Naked Capitalism:

“Treatment with Hydroxychloroquine, Azithromycin, and Combination in Patients Hospitalized with COVID-19” [International Journal of Infectious Diseases]. n=2541. “According to a protocol-based treatment algorithm, among hospitalized patients, use of hydroxychloroquine alone and in combination with azithromycin was associated with a significant reduction in-hospital mortality compared to not receiving hydroxychloroquine.” From CNN: “Dr. Marcus Zervos, division head of infectious disease for Henry Ford Health System, said 26% of those not given hydroxychloroquine died, compared to 13% of those who got the drug. The team looked back at everyone treated in the hospital system since the first patient in March.” • Yes, it’s an observational study, and so what? If you haven’t read this from Tricia Greenhalgh, read it now.

A few years ago, Naked Capitalism got wrongly labeled in the Washington Post’s “Prop or not” scandal. Recently, they have been involved in CALPERS (California Pension and retirees) dirty dealings and back-stabbings.

At the same time they have a large contingent of Sanders supporters, who just can’t seem to deal with reality.

You really should get that done since it might be cutting into new traffic - Google now filters sites that aren’t HTTPS.

On that topic, Charles, a question - is it an option to set up a redirect rule on your Web server? Then you wouldn’t have to worry about changing any links; anyone clicking on a stale link would automatically get redirected to the HTTPS page by the server.

Both the leaders of the Welsh and Scottish devolved governments have used the word “shambolic” to describe the way the UK government has handled its plan to reduce quarantine measure for people coming into the UK.

First, here’s the First Minister for Wales:

“Dealing with the UK Government over the last few days has been an utter shambolic experience. If ever there was an example of making an announcement first, and then trying to work out what you meant by it, that is what we have seen since this announcement was first trailed in the press.”

It’s better when you hear it in a Welsh accent.

The First Minister for Scotland was slightly more diplomatic, but made sure to include the word “shambolic”.

“When so much is at stake as it is right now we can’t allow ourselves to be dragged along in the wake of, to be quite frank about it, another government’s shambolic decision process”

It’s better when you hear it in a central Scotland accent.

Scotland to review government’s ‘shambolic’ air bridge plan, says Sturgeon

Gutzon Borglum, creator of the Mount Rushmore Memorial, was the initial sculptor for the Stone Mountain memorial.

Borglum was a member of the Ku Klux Klan. He was one of the six knights who sat on the Imperial Koncilium in 1923, which transferred leadership of the Ku Klux Klan from Imperial Wizard Colonel Simmons to Imperial Wizard Hiram Evans. In 1925, having only completed the head of Robert E. Lee, Borglum was dismissed from the Stone Mountain project, with some holding that it came about due to infighting within the KKK, with Borglum involved in the strife. Later, he stated “I am not a member of the Kloncilium, nor a knight of the KKK,” but Howard Shaff and Audrey Karl Shaff add that “that was for public consumption.”
The museum at Mount Rushmore displays a letter to Borglum from D.C. Stephenson, the infamous Klan Grand Dragon who later was convicted of the rape and murder of Madge Oberholtzer. The 8x10 foot portrait contains the inscription “To my good friend Gutzon Borglum, with the greatest respect.” Correspondence from Borglum to Stephenson during the 1920s detailed a deep racist conviction in Nordic moral superiority and strict immigration policies.
*snip*
Borglum agreed to include a Ku Klux Klan altar in his plans for the memorial to acknowledge a request of Helen Plane in 1915, who wrote to him: “I feel it is due to the KKK that saved us from Negro domination and carpetbag rule, that it be immortalized on Stone Mountain”.
*snip*
Carving officially began on June 23, 1923, with Borglum making the first cut. At Stone Mountain he developed sympathetic connections with the reorganized Ku Klux Klan, who were major financial backers of the monument.

On KERA, they’re talking to a ride company called Alto, ridealto.com, that serves Dallas. They have hired all of their drivers, and provide them with health insurance and training. Because of Covid-19, they had to switch to a delivery company, but they’re showing how the company is fitting their cars, all company-owned, fitted with barriers between drivers and passengers. They’re cars are GM cars.

Edited to fix a word.

In this case it seems to be true. She was asking me how I do it, and I explained it to her, and she said, “I tried doing that with eggs in the middle of the bread, and it fell apart. I just can’t make it like you do.”

With that said, I am absolutely OK with doing my fair share of cooking. I’m a pretty good hand in the kitchen, though I lack creativity and stick strictly to recipes or techniques I’ve proven before.

It’s actually not that nefarious a choice to zip tie chairs into a row when seating isn’t attached to the ground. The park staff probably does it all the time. It actually makes it easier to separate because you can put your stuff in the seat next to you and the person next to you can’t slide their chair closer to yours (this, of course, counts on smart attendees). If it was just individual chairs at a safe distance, the seating arrangement would be random chaos within 15 minutes even if the attendees were smart. I’m with the zip-tie tie-ers on this one.

It’s up in the mountains, yes? If it’s windy, it could blow the chairs around or over before anyone can plant their asses in them to keep them in place.

Banqueting chairs often have side-hooks for linking chairs together in large halls to keep them aligned and preventing Joe Public from rearranging them, blocking gangways (including wheelchair and mobility-impaired access) and exit routes. Folding chairs don’t have those sorts of hooks so keeping emergency passages open if shit goes wrong by using zipties is not a bad idea.
