Indigenous Activists Assert Right to Unceded Land at Anti-Trump Protest [LIVE VIDEO]

Politics • Views: 21,185

As we lead up to Trump’s monumentally reckless and dangerous July 4th fireworks event, here’s a live feed of indigenous activists who have blocked the road in a large demonstration. They’re chanting, “Honor the treaty!”

In the 1920s, South Dakota historian Doane Robinson hired sculptor Gutzon Borglum to construct a national monument to promote tourism in the state.

Gutzon was a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and had recently helped construct a memorial to Confederate leaders in the state of Georgia. Some of the funding for the Mount Rushmore project came from the KKK.

The mountain that was chosen for the site of the monument is known as “The Six Grandfathers” (Thuŋkášila Šákpe) by Lakota peoples, named after the Earth, the Sky, and the four directions.

The nine tribes of the Great Sioux Nation never agreed to or signed away their rights to this land; the Fort Laramie treaty in 1868, which the tribes did sign, guaranteed them “undisturbed use and occupation” of the land on which the Six Grandfathers, or Mount Rushmore, is on.

Today, coinciding with a Trump/Pence rally in Keystone, SD, Indigenous activists plan to assert their right to unceded treaty lands.

Oh. FUCK.

I hope the protesters have a copy of the original Treaty and the 1980 Supreme Court decision that agrees that they got screwed by the US Government in a treaty violation that was for the sole purpose of removing gold from the Black Hills (see Deadwood).

One hundred forty-four years and 8 days since the Battle of the Greasy Grass. I doubt the National Guard really wants to make this a rematch… Trump, OTOH, is stupid enough.

I think this gets it slightly wrong

This is the problem California officials now face as they deal with a major surge in coronavirus cases tied to business reopenings, social gatherings and other factors, and hospitals are becoming increasingly crowded. As the public has become more accustomed to the pandemic, Californians have seemingly become less afraid of the highly contagious virus, even though it’s no less infectious than it was in the winter

.

I’m not sure people are less afraid. I think most have realized that the (federal) government failed to live up to its side of the deal. We all go home from a month or two and they get their shit together for testing and treatment and everything else. Instead, we are stuck here.

The headlining act, the governor and the audience are all thirsting for blood. I realize that the protesters are standing on LAND THAT IS ACTUALLY THEIRS BY TREATY, but I still wouldn’t want to be within 20 miles of this toxic event. I hope the protesters can stay safe.

Somebody probably gave them a copy of the Supreme Court order from 1980 that says yes, actually, this is in fact Lakota land.

As per a super-formal, totally legit Treaty negotiated by the Secretary of State, signed by the President, ratified by the Senate. According to the Constitution, that makes it law of the land.

So…..the speech is meant to be starting in an hour.

So the police need to clear the road, allow the Trump supporters through, get them to park, and then clear them through security and get them into their seats int 60 minutes.

That sounds unlikely.

Or are the supporters already in the event? In which case, who is being affected by the road block?

I was just smiling to myself thinking - when Trump is defeated, he will be arrested. He has no Ford to pardon him and he can’t pardon himself. Anyone he does pardon admits guilt by accepting the pardon and loses the right to plead the 5th and have to testify against him. I hope somewhere in his evil heart he understands that he will die, alone, in a prison cell.

re: #117 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

They’ve forgotten he was a Democrat.

And I mean, I lived in the shadow of Chicago when it was ruled by his son, Richard M. Daley, who was an asshole in his own right. The Daley family’s hands are permanently stained with blood, and THAT’S the example they want to pull in as the standard for how to suppress protests? Holy shit, these folks are ghouls.

Washington Black Panthers. I love it!

How about Washington Peltiers?

The Carolina Panthers might have a slight problems with that

Exactly. Most of the newly infected people haven’t died yet. Give it a few weeks and I guarantee you we’ll see a fucking spike.

I cannot recall ever feeling so ashamed to be American as I am when I read this. We sent men to the fucking MOON, only a few years after all our rockets were blowing up on the pad, with less computing power than your average Casio watch. And here we are half a century later, admitting that we’re unwilling or unable to do what other countries already have done.

I knew Trump would be bad for America, but I did not imagine it would get THIS bad THIS fast.

I’ve mentioned here that I was an eyewitness to the ‘68 convention riot. My mother was a delegate and she and my step father took me along in an effort to correct my wayward infatuation with the Republican Party. They wanted me to see the process in all its glory, and realize that they truly were the people’s party. I saw something else entirely and it probably contributed to my 30 years diversion to the dark side.
