Can’t Fight lyrics

It seems that I won’t be warned
And certainly, I saw a sign
I raged like a woman scorned
But something about you got me gone
You’re pulling me back and now I’m going under

A little peace, a little love
A little bit, is that enough?
I can’t fight away this love
I knew that I should give you up
I tried to run but got my heart stuck
I can’t fight away this love
Can’t fight away this love

The things that I want and need
But they always seem to be at odds with me
Oh, why?
When did Heaven get this heavy?
Everything’s right until it’s wrong
But something about you feels like home
Oh, baby, you know that you got me gone
You’re pulling me back and now I’m going under, oh

re: #38 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Is this a RW thing?

The flag was created by a high schooler, who then created a business selling patches, stickers, &c with the thin blue line flag. His original creation was not meant to have any political significance, but simply to support the police.

The flag itself violates the US Flag Code, but that code has no enforcement authority, and it’s likely if it had enforcement authority it would violate the First Amendment.

It wasn’t long before Nazis and white supremacists hijacked the symbol for culture-jamming purposes.

Now the flag is divisive, as it means different things to different people, even different police departments.

Annnd, of course, it’s Somerville. (I had to check.) An ex-boyfriend lives there. He’s the unofficial mayor of Somerville (there is an official one). He is suffering this summer because he has always made a point of going to all city cultural events and they’re pretty much shut down because of the pandemic. When I visited him a couple of years ago, we went to a street festival in Somerville and I spent most of the time being introduced to various local luminaries and lowlifes by the ex.

There were a lot more nuances to the story as told my Mel G in Braveheart, the Scottish nobility were already compromised and half-English

But don’t get me going on Stirling Bridge.

The English cavalry did not charge, they came across the bridge four abreast and tried to form up in the boggy ground across the river, where they were set upon by Scottish spearmen.

But cinematographically, that might have evoked a degree of sympathy for the poor English horses unable to move and being cut to bits, the movie version had them charging onto the spears and getting their just comeuppance.

Both songs are products on the 1980s, which is right around the time that they were totally misappropriated as “patriotic” songs by Republicans looking to wrap themselves in anything that seemed vaguely “Americana.” Most of those morons have never read the lyrics, they just repeat the chorus lines and hum the rest. Another example of the fallout if you come down with this, by Emily L. Hauser writing at Medium.

COVID-19 skepticism & my very special gang of trolls

On May 27th, when I’d been in isolation with mild COVID-19 for 71 days — a period during which I experienced constant low-grade fevers along with a battery of other standard symptoms, including respiratory distress; constant, often debilitating fatigue; g/i issues concerning which I will not overburden you here; and oh, did I mention the day-in-day-out fevers?— I discovered, to my absolute shock, that a subsection of Twitter — hundreds of accounts, some with between ten and twenty thousand followers— had made mocking me their quarantine project.

What? You ask. And not unreasonably! I don’t know how it started, but I can tell you that in late May, someone among their number discovered my occasional tweets about my condition, and decided I was lying. You’ll find a few representative screenshots at the bottom of this post; I’ll not be referring to anyone’s accounts by name and I’ve obscured their identifiers, because a) I don’t want to give any of them any more glory than they’ve already covered themselves in and b) I presume that if I did, my Twitter life — generally a very pleasant existence, all told — would be made, let’s just say, unpleasant.

Perhaps the people who follow the words and deeds of the itinerant carpenter rabbi in the New Testament should leave behind the name “Christian” to the fascists and racists who make up such a large part of that. Some other name which stands for inclusion and love which they claim.

One that doesn’t have the wingnut projection they put on Islam: It’s a political ideology.

[Embedded content]

The earliest followers of the Jewish splinter group referred to themselves as simpler followers of the Way. Christian seems (depending up the sources used) more to have started as a name about them rather than by them. Your point about finding a different name has merit but at this point it would be like the non-abusive police trying to call themselves something other than police; no one else is going to go along with it.

For better or worse, it is the name hung on all of us and it is up to me to live up to the name especially when most do not.

Wedding Photographer Sues For “Artistic Freedom” to Deny Service to Gay Couples (goes to Friendly Atheist)

Christian hate group Alliance Defending Freedom is suing the Commonwealth of Virginia on behalf of a professional photographer, who says photographing same-sex weddings is a violation of his artistic freedom as a Christian.

He’s not really a bigot though, he’ll photograph other things for LGBT+ people.

The legislation does indeed make it a violation for service providers to publish a notice of their intent to discriminate, and with good reason: It’s still discrimination even if you’re notified beforehand that you can expect to be excluded.

Is it fair for me to assume someone who claims to be a Republican should abandon that name, or is living up to the Republican’s supposed ideals when the majority are bigots and fascists is also a bigot and a fascist, or perhaps they should abandon that name (and party) and form something else, like the American Conservative Party?

I’m told that it was a cult classic, tho, which is why it got the attention to become a thing now.

When President Trump took office in 2017, his team stopped work on new federal regulations that would have forced the health care industry to prepare for an airborne infectious disease pandemic such as COVID-19. That decision is documented in federal records reviewed by NPR.

“If that rule had gone into effect, then every hospital, every nursing home would essentially have to have a plan where they made sure they had enough respirators and they were prepared for this sort of pandemic,” said David Michaels, who was head of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration until January 2017

Yes, it is:

An airborne disease is any disease that is caused by pathogens that can be transmitted through the air over time and distance by small particles.[2] Such diseases include many of considerable importance both in human and veterinary medicine. The relevant pathogens may be viruses, bacteria, or fungi, and they may be spread through breathing, talking, coughing, sneezing, raising of dust, spraying of liquids, toilet flushing or any activities which generate aerosol particles or droplets. Human airborne diseases do not include conditions caused by air pollution such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gases and any airborne particles.

NetworkKed  Jul 4, 2020 • 8:06:09am

There is a technical definition of “airborne” and a common-sense/common-usage definition of airborne. COVID-19 does NOT meet the technical definition, but it absolutely does meet the common-sense definition.

If I’m infected and coughing/singing/talking/breathing nearby another person, even without visible droplets crossing the gap they can get sick. Masks are particularly useful since they can absorb those droplets.

…but to be truly, technically airborne, the virus would need to be able to survive without encapsulation in water droplets, to just float totally naked on the air currents.

The miscommunication because of the technical definition has caused ongoing problems since the beginning - you ask a scientist and they say “not airborne” so the idiots don’t think masks are worthwhile. And the the same scientist says to wear a mask and the idiots yell “liar liar” and trust scientists even less.

Zombie Karen…

[Embedded content]

This posting (original twitter poster, not LGF people) illuminates all the problems I have with “Karen,” and the misogyny hiding in it. We’ve all seen and laughed at the meltdowns over mask wearing (me too, and I have no problem with highlighting them). But when we create the type and start throwing every woman we deem to have misbehaved into it, we end up with something very different.

What does this clip have to do with covid-19 bad behavior? Is there something about wearing a mask? Has an employee prevented her from going in because she’s not wearing one? We don’t know — all that clip shows is woman behaving badly while some (unseen) men laugh at her. (If you follow the link, you’ll see what it was clipped from — a two minute sequence of her throwing herself at that door, which might be to a retail establishment, while people laugh at her. No clue how we got there. It’s clearly cut from an even longer sequence of events, and it’s not funny at all. Except, maybe, to people who are amused by the antics of the homeless mentally ill who decorate our streets these days.)

Yet whoever edited and posted it originally thought it was fine to dismiss her as a “Karen,” edit it to a single moment and post it for our amusement. I predict we will never see an equivalent “Ken” category for the men who act out about their entitlements in their own special ways. Because we don’t just dismiss them.

And while I’m on this soapbox (it’s heavy and I don’t want to drag it out again), might we spare a little understanding for all the shutdown protesters? I know I said the milk of human kindness had curdled in my veins, but I seem to have a bit left somewhere. We know there are at least 35 million people out of work, and there’s probably another large group of people who are hanging by a thread and know it. Is it any wonder that some of them grasp at straws, like “covid hoax” and hate the visible symbol of what hit them, the mask? We lizards are mostly educated at least enough to be able to recognize nonsense, but members of the group that’s hardest hit by the economic crash are likely not to be, so they’re susceptible to faux noise brainwashing and 8-chan conspiracies — anything that gives them a sense that someone is controlling this and can fix it. I’m not suggesting any sort of compromise — they’re still wrong, and wrong-headed — but maybe we could dial down the contempt.

I have zero respect or sympathy for any “protestor” who brings a gun. Sure, someone who loses their job has reason to hate the situation but that’s not what the reopening protests were about. Mostly astroturf, all white, all about intimidation.

I’ve had some mixed thoughts about the “Karen” thing - in the customer service world I’ve run into almost as many of that type who were male. If there’s a difference the men more often seem to be gaming the system deliberately. Also, the people I’ve met named “Karen” are nice, and it’s kinda awful for them.

Today, Lorance is hailed as a hero by President Trump.
His troops have suffered a very different fate.

Thank you for that. “Click it or ticket” was a gross expansion of the authority of police officers to pull anyone over that they wanted to. I’m not going to blame seatbelt laws for racism that already existed, but they sure do enable it. And while there are societal costs to someone not wearing their seatbelt, to such a degree that I’ll even agree it’s fair game for government regulation, it’s not a germ jumping from car to car unbuckling other people. And it didn’t persuade anyone that it was worth wearing a seat belt, it was just threat from authority.

“Mask it or casket” given the first phrase as context is even more offensive, because the implication is that the mask police are the ones who are going to make you dead.

Sorry. The annual advertising campaigns really rub me the wrong way.

I think we’re seeing the death knell of Trumpism. Ironically, his greatest strength is his greatest weakness: race. I’ve been thinking for a day or two that stoking racism is what got him elected (Whitelash) and what sustains him and I still believe that. Now I think it will be the coup de grace to his abhorrent tumor of a presidency.

This is what Parker had in mind when he wrote in 2016 that Trump could be “good for the United States.” The backlash Trump provoked among whites and nonwhites alike “could kick off a second Reconstruction,” Parker now thinks. “I know it sounds crazy, especially coming from a black man,” he says, but “I think Trump actually is one of the best things that’s happened in this country.”

Let us hope.

re: #67 Dr Lizardo

I thought Mel Gibson was born in New York and moved to Australia with his family when he was almost a teenager or something.

He was and he did. The family moved because his lunatic father, the noted holocaust denier and Catholic throwback Hutton Gibson, was incensed at the US sponsored assassination of the Catholic president of South Vietnam, Ngo Dinh Diem. He claimed the US was fighting an anti-Catholic war and moved the family because he did not want his sons drafted to fight in such a war.
Poor Hutton did not know that Diem was on the same side we were, as were most Vietnamese Catholics, and he was killed because he was corrupt, incompetent, and brutally oppressive, not because he was the enemy. This is one of the best examples in the 20th century of the age-old principle that the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend. Most stupidly (considering that he uprooted his family and moved them halfway around the world for it) Hutton also didn’t know that Australian troops were already fighting in Vietnam at that point (November 1963) and that Australia also had conscription (“National Service”).

Except for the fact that in the 30’s, Lansky took a break from the lucrative parts of his criming to punch Nazis.

from en.wikipedia.org

In the 1930s, Lansky and his gang stepped outside their usual criminal activities to break up rallies held by the pro-Nazi German-American Bund. He recalled a particular rally in Yorkville, a German neighborhood in Manhattan, that he and 14 other associates disrupted:

The stage was decorated with a swastika and a picture of Adolf Hitler. The speakers started ranting. There were only fifteen of us, but we went into action. We threw some of them out the windows. Most of the Nazis panicked and ran out. We chased them and beat them up. We wanted to show them that Jews would not always sit back and accept insults.

Another grim record for Florida:

The state of Florida has another record for positive tests of COVID-19.

The Department of Health reported another 11458 cases on Saturday. The department also reported another 18 deaths it attributed to the coronavirus, including two in Hillsborough County and one in Pinellas.

A dashboard maintained by the department shows an additional 245 hospitalizations from the outbreak.

Florida is closing in on 200,000 coronavirus cases and may surpass that number this weekend. Saturday’s count takes the total number of cases in the state to 190,052.

Latest numbers from the wild north country: Maintaining an even 3% new infection rate, maintaining a test rate of 15,000/day, so we’re treading water but not making any progress. I’m still waiting for the governor to announce mandatory masks in public, but he admitted in a speech the other day that it became “unfortunately political”, so he’s probably wary of stepping on the Republicans’ toes. Not the President*’s - he has zero fucks left for Donald J. Trump.

Distancing and mask wearing on the patios of restaurants and bars is abysmal from what I’ve been seeing in the neighborhoods west of downtown St Paul. I don’t even want to know what’s happening inside. Compliance at stores seems to be pretty good. I can see why it’s simultaneously not going down but not spiking. We could slip and fall pretty easily over the summer.
