Belafon  Jul 4, 2020 • 10:47:36am

From the previous thread:

re: #334 NetworkKed

“Click it or ticket” was a gross expansion of the authority of police officers to pull anyone over that they wanted to. I’m not going to blame seatbelt laws for racism that already existed, but they sure do enable it. And while there are societal costs to someone not wearing their seatbelt, to such a degree that I’ll even agree it’s fair game for government regulation, it’s not a germ jumping from car to car unbuckling other people. And it didn’t persuade anyone that it was worth wearing a seat belt, it was just threat from authority.

“Mask it or casket” given the first phrase as context is even more offensive, because the implication is that the mask police are the ones who are going to make you dead.

Sorry. The annual advertising campaigns really rub me the wrong way.

In the world I live in, a majority of the people around me would only wear their seatbelts if they would get in trouble otherwise. It’s the same with speed limits, which, btw, are being less followed due to obviously fewer cops on the roads.

One of my cousins tried to argue back in April that we didn’t need enforcement of masks and distancing because people will do the right thing. Guess what? I knew they wouldn’t and we know they won’t.

You’re also reaching on “mask it or casket.”

I should be asleep. I worked overnight and but couldn’t stay asleep due to the heat up here. So perhaps I should make some lunch. How about a nice bachelor special?

Take some kielbasa, cut it into chunks. Put in bottom of sauce pan. Add half can of corn. Measure enough water for a cup of mashed potato flakes. Heat to a simmer until sausage is fully heated, then add butter and bring to a boil. Take off heat, mix in flakes, serve on plate with shredded cheddar on top.

It’s actually not too bad.

I’ve been thinking of “cancel culture” like the code of conduct for the Assassins Guild’ in Ankh-Morpork: no inhuming someone who can’t defend themselves, but once you have enough money you are deemed to be able to protect yourself.

Hence I am not really bothered about rich white celebrities being “cancelled,” e.g. people yell at them and maybe they lose an endorsement contract.

I am less thrilled when some random person is dragged over the coals all over social media for being sort of an ass or making a dumb mistake. That really does have the potential to mess up someone’s life if the the first thing that shows up when a future employee Googles them is their public humiliation.

People who call the cops on black people having a picnic are deemed to be able to protect themselves. Cops certainly are. Everyone should drag them.

Require a college degree.
Then law enforcement specific training, perhaps 2 years.
Then 2 years of OJT apprenticeship. No carrying a firearm until the apprenticeship is over unless authorized, in writing, by local chief in an emergency.
Can not, under any circumstance, hide identity or badge number.

This also goes with my belief that on shift, the body cam should not be able to be turned off. Allow editing of personal/hygiene moments but all cops on duty (including detectives, supervisors, etc) must have the camera on. Turning it off while on duty is automatic termination of employment.

No, they’re bad unions. When you fix the way police are selected, trained, promoted, and retained you will have fixed the union.

I’m pro-union, but the police unions need to be completely blown up and replaced. In EVERY instance of a police officer performing or celebrating criminal acts, whether it be theft, extortion, assault or even murder under color of authority, they have sided with the officers, and painted the victims of such acts as having deserved it, and have shown full support of any retaliatory acts committed by police when they are subject to oversight.

Only a schoolteacher will work for that education/salary ratio. The problem isn’t that the killer cops lack the knowledge to do the job, but that they lack the moral compass.

Oh, I have No problem with boosting the pay of both cops and teachers to match the education requirements. It works in Europe (Finland I think is even longer) so I think if we dangled a big enough carrot it would work.

Yes, grandfathering in the current cops would be necessary as will be making the IA stronger and breaking those unions that are corrupt (NYC, Minneapolis, etc) and ending Qualified Immunity.

As for cops not lacking knowledge, a couple of the worst I’ve known were barely literate thugs and their incident reports read like something Trump would write. Being able to hold life or death in your hand with only a GED is something that has to end.

I’ve had a hard time with this, after a decade of lining up solidly behind unions.

There should be a way to make a police union work, but when a union’s primary function is to defend the well-being of its members, and the work role of those members involves activities which so closely parallel illegal activities (I mean in that use of force plays a part) then I’m not sure how you can set it up to where the union won’t sometimes be on the wrong side of the argument.

Starting from a very strong moral code in the bylaws, maybe? But then you get into splitting hairs and rules lawyering within the union and that’s not going to help… dunno.

Education, yes. Also PAYING officers more. And (ugly to say) not allowing an ex-military monoculture within the force. But those are all prescriptions from outside the union.

Still thinking about this one.

Minneapolis barely had a rise in cases after the BLM protests.

Illinois has been experiencing a slow, but real rise, in cases. However the BLM protests coincided with the state following CDC guidelines to reopen. Unfortunately, while you might get retail establishments to adhere to guidelines, good luck on persuading Trumpsters to wear masks (though I do know a couple — including my brother — who have been following best practices). So no way of knowing what is the reason for the increase. Could also be due to travelers from states that are becoming the new centers of the pandemic.

I think the police unions need to be concerned ONLY with the actual labor aspects of the job. Like salary, pay raises, benefits, retirement funds and working conditions. They should NEVER have a say in how an officer is investigated, disciplined and prosecuted. Cops are citizens, their rights are no more special than anyone else’s. Let them go through a specific legal process, suspension pending investigation, charges filed , etc, which can be determined fairly, this really isn’t rocket science. Cops should actually be held to a higher standard of conduct than the average person and the system should reflect that respect for the community they serve. Unions don’t have a say in that, or shouldn’t.

Process to process memory protection has been corrupted. That’s going to end up like my first XT running Minix 1.x where the compiler process would start at the top of my 640kb and go down with no protection while the editor process was going bottom up with no protection. If they hit in the middle, the file system was guaranteed to end up trashed.

It’s more difficult on FreeBSD. It’s mostly just to keep tabs on where the system is these days.

My Sun Blade 2500 Silver running Solaris 10 u11, though older and somewhat slower (single 1.6ghz Ultrasparc IIIi & 4gb) is actually far more useful. If I had to use it daily, I could if I popped the 2nd possible CPU and maxed the ram to 16gb. That said, my daily driver remains Windows because of the most recent browsers & the games my son and I play. Warframe is the most important and it will not run in WINE or in a VirtualBox VM. The other were what I was thinking for my comment.

Yeah, imagine a running three sided firefight - cops <->BLM<->Bugboys in even one city… The right wing would be shrieking that it’s the German Revolution of 1919 again.

It’s early summer, and we’re about 2 dead violinists away from that.

From the previous thread:

In the world I live in, a majority of the people around me would only wear their seatbelts if they would get in trouble otherwise. It’s the same with speed limits, which, btw, are being less followed due to obviously fewer cops on the roads.

One of my cousins tried to argue back in April that we didn’t need enforcement of masks and distancing because people will do the right thing. Guess what? I knew they wouldn’t and we know they won’t.

You’re also reaching on “mask it or casket.”

There are signs on doors that say masks required here in Rockwall. But, because of Abbotts previous orders, and no good way for stores to enforce them that didn’t before - you’re not going to get a teenager working at the gas station to make people wear them - about a third of the people I’m seeing aren’t wearing masks. That’s far better than before, but its not universal.

This is from a speech he gave back in 2004:

I finally arrived here in 1968. What a special day it was. I remember I arrived here with empty pockets but full of dreams, full of determination, full of desire. The presidential campaign was in full swing. I remember watching the Nixon-Humphrey presidential race on TV. A friend of mine who spoke German and English translated for me. I heard Humphrey saying things that sounded like socialism, which I had just left. But then I heard Nixon speak. He was talking about free enterprise, getting the government off your back, lowering the taxes and strengthening the military. Listening to Nixon speak sounded more like a breath of fresh air. I said to my friend, I said, “What party is he?” My friend said, “He’s a Republican.” I said, “Then I am a Republican.” And I have been a Republican ever since.

Well, ok, if you fundamentally change how police unions work they can stay. Right now no one has any power to rein them in. Citizen review boards make recommendations that are ingnored. Whistle-blower cops are forceably committed to mental institutions*. Police chiefs who try to fire bad cops are forced out instead.

If police unions do not have the power to overrule a oversight body, things would be a lot different. I am willing to try that.

* This happened - it’s an amazing story

That was when I decided police unions need to be nuked. I read that story. Then three days later listened to that prick who heads the NYPD Union ginning up the cops and demanding we respect them. That was my breaking point.

Boogaloo will use black folks/BLM as a shield, a free ticket to normalization.

The “Boogaloo Movement” is possibly more heterogeneous and decentralized than “Antifa” is. They aren’t all RWNJ White Nationalists. *MANY* are, but it’s way more complex than that and pretending it’s not is just as bad as RWNJs talking about Antifa like it’s an terrorist organization run by Soros that has a hierarchy and meetings.

From what I’ve read of people investigating them, the older and more organized groups are RWNJ Racist White Nationalists trying to start a race war. The younger and less organized groups are far less likely to be racists, many openly support BLM.

The only commonality to this is that they all use the term Boogaloo. They all think a civil war is imminent. They all have guns.

I mean, they were, but that’s also the point. The protests did not lead to a significant spike in cases.

And here’s some research to back that up.

Research Determines Protests Did Not Cause Spike In Coronavirus Cases

…researchers found “no evidence that urban protests reignited Covid-19 case growth during the more than three weeks following protest onset.”

The study’s conclusions are supported by Covid-19 testing data in many of the cities that were home to prevalent protesting. For instance, the Minneapolis Department of Health reported that more than 15,000 people were tested at centers set up in communities affected by the protests, and 1.7% of tests came back positive—below the statewide average of about 3.6%. According to the Washington Post, protest attendees in Minneapolis returned positivity rates of less than 1% and that “officials believe the low infection rates reflect that the protests were outside, that most people wore masks and that people spent most of their time in motion, circulating through the crowd.”

NPR reported last week that parties—not protests—are believed to have caused coronavirus spikes in Washington. “We’re finding that the social events and gatherings, these parties where people aren’t wearing masks, are our primary source of infection,” said Erika Lautenbach, a local county Health Department director.

Yes, it is indeed one of the five/ten worst movies of all time and while the crew does their best to have as much fun as they could with that pantheon of pain, it’s a very acquired taste (imho, ymmv). I would humbly suggest something like Cave Dwellers (how much O’Keffe is in this movie?) or even Space Mutiny or Pod People to start off with as the riffing commentary is just a tad more joyful/lighthearted and representative of the MST3K series… just sayin’.
