Crowded House: “Fall at Your Feet” (Live From Home, 2020)

Music • Views: 21,184

YouTube

In the spirit of musical comradeship through isolation, us fellas in Crowded House have created a live version of Fall At Your Feet, captured here in the making at our respective home set ups. Some of the sentiment in this song struck me as being resonant now in a different way than I first imagined.

We have enjoyed favor and felt welcome in the United States for many years. There is a deep connection to and appreciation of all that America has done for the evolution of popular music, at its best a transformative art form, now perhaps more needed than ever. In particular, we are inspired by the magnificence of black culture. We owe a huge debt to the African American artists whose creative expressions have elevated us with magic, passion and beauty while living with prejudice and injustice that we, as white men, can only imagine and have never had to suffer.

We have more to give and other privileges to repay, but right now in support of this groundswell for justice against a racist system, we will direct all of the income for this song for the next year to causes that assist in keeping the momentum for massive and meaningful change, to address this glaring inequity in our society.

Just a beginning, more to follow… with love and respect,

Crowded House

Yay! New post and I can read the comments. Still having shutdown issues once the comments hit 100-150. If I jump into a thread early and don’t get logged off, I can hang longer than that. Onward…

Last night was horrid here in the Atlanta burbs. So many at home fireworks that by 10 last night I couldn’t go outside. The whole area was enveloped in smoke from fireworks and I’m allergic to sulfur. I took Cleo out to pee and was coughing and choking for the next 2 hours. It sounded like a war zone outside, from every direction. Fireworks are legal here with no enforced rules, but this year is by far the worst in the 30 yrs I’ve lived here. 25 yrs at this location. We usually hang out at the pool and enjoy a late dinner outside, this year it was not possible. But their rights trump(pun intended) mine. I hate it here. Fuck these people and their orange cat anus mouth of a president.

Hearing everyone’s fireworks stories makes me glad I live in a town where they are illegal. Although, I am serenaded daily by the outdoor gun range that’s about a mile from me (as the crow flies).

They’re supposed to be illegal here, but that requires that the cops do something.

Tell them minorities are shooting them off. You’ll get a SWAT team to stop the fireworks…

It’s legal to purchase all class C fireworks here, but it’s not legal to shoot off anything that flies or booms, so basically only fountains and sparklers are legal to light.

So how do you stop the shooting off of fireworks when your entire neighborhood is shooting them off?

Not happening.

I’m going to make some calls this week about this shit. I first have to find out if it’s a county or state level law that allows this. You would think at the very least it would be a fire safety issue. I was just astonished that this went on for five fucking hours. Non stop and everywhere. I can’t even get how this was enjoyable for anyone. When I say the whole area, I mean for a few miles. My son went to get gas 4 miles from the house and he said it was the same cloud of burning crap. That’s some bullshit.

It’s actually illegal here but no one stops it. The majority are set off by tourists and, this year especially, they aren’t going to mess with the money flow. Said tourists buy the good stuff on the Rez and they go back to their cabins and hotels and make noise, smoke and all the rest. I just sit back and hope to not hear either screams of pain or ambulance sirens.

Around here, different towns have different rules. I think the county permits fireworks but most town don’t. I heard fireworks in the distance, probably from people who don’t live in an incorporated town. My apartment complex issues a notice every 4th reminding people that fireworks are illegal and to call the police if there are any violations.

Several years ago I lived in Utah. Pioneer Days was toward the end of June (the 24th, IIRC), and fireworks were a nightly occurrence for about 3 weeks, from Pioneer Days until they used up all the fireworks in the days following July 4th. One of the many reasons I’m glad I don’t live there anymore.

Last night there were fireworks all over. Normally all one has to do is look in the direction of the local playground or recreation center and watch the display. Last night I just looked out my bedroom window and the whole southern sky was lit up.

Actually, July 4th is the first holiday…but Pioneer Day is July 24th and is the bigger holiday. When I lived in Utah, in 1999 there was a scandal that there wasn’t going to be a 4th of July parade because *horror of horrors* it was on a Sunday. A radio DJ and others threw together a halfway decent 4th of July holiday parade, but if I needed a reminder of how *crazy* living in Utah was, that was it.

ETA: My neighbors set off tons of fireworks. Oddly, my 11 YO cat was completely unperturbed, while I kept checking out the window to make sure nothing was on fire.

A Cranky One  Jul 5, 2020 • 11:18:18am

Fireworks other than sparklers are illegal in our area. However, a short trip to Indiana will net all the fireworks desired. Most major roads are lined with firework stores as soon as you cross the state line.

At one time, the police made an attempt to limit bringing fireworks from Indiana, but it was primarily a PR effort with no real teeth.

Folks have been shooting off fireworks for days, but yesterday was especially bad. It pretty much started early morning and never stopped all night. I try to ignore it, but booms that shake the house at 2-3 a.m. are hard to ignore.

The police did apparently run off a group that was very close and firing what sounded like M-80s at 1 a.m.. Appreciated that, but they usually don’t do much to enforce the anti-fireworks laws.

I do wonder how many drunks are missing body parts today.

I lived there a couple of years and never could get used to most things being closed on Sundays, especially since Sunday is my traditional day of errands. I liked my students, but my Mormon neighbors viewed me with suspicion. A never-married woman of a certain age was viewed as suspect.

The fireworks started last night at about 9:30 and went on for 2 and a half hours. The good news is that the family across the street were shooting professional-grade fireworks in their backyard so we got to watch a very nice show from the front porch.

At midnight all the noise stopped. Just STOPPED.

Well, “y’all”…

South Carolina has some of the most liberal fireworks laws in the nation. Stands across the state sell pyrotechnic bricks that launch a dozen or more shells, setting off explosions that can rival a small town’s.

The booms were continuous last night.

stpaulbear  Jul 5, 2020 • 11:32:00am

In my neighborhood, fireworks have been a nightly occurrence since before Memorial day. Some of them have been pretty loud and pretty late on weeknights. I’ve called the non-911 police dispatcher a couple of times (the dispatcher could clearly hear the explosions over my phone), but the cops really don’t do anything about it because fireworks are legal up to a point in MN and WI (people will cross the borders to get what they want). Some asshole is always sure to nightly blow of a couple of loud ones every half hour or so until after midnight.

Afternoon Lizardim from the hot, humid, and soon to be rainy (I hope) wild north country. Encouraging news all around - new infection % and new infection counts are both down over the weekend, despite maintaining testing; and for once, masks were finally spotted at my church, albeit on a Sunday where not many were in attendance due to a large part of our membership being away at the lake for the weekend. How go things among the lizardfolk on this post-July 4 recovery day?

NetworkKed  Jul 5, 2020 • 11:40:18am

When I grew up in Indiana, basically only burnables (sparklers, fountains, similar) were legal. When I was in college, they changed the laws so you could basically buy anything… if you signed a form stating you wouldn’t set it off in Indiana.

Yeah, that worked well.

So when we hit peak Republican locally around 2006 (so Pence was the one who made it big, but the governor who really fucked everything up was Mitch Daniels, whose other greatest hits included destroying our time zone and selling the toll road) they seem to have basically made everything legal. So this weekend has been a continuous racket of explosions and detonations, and at a certain point I’m pretty sure someone was blasting a shotgun into the air.

Fucking Republicans.

My dad and I trained as pyrotechnicians when I was in college and still lived in Indiana, to help run a show for a town that didn’t have one. He has a 3” mortar that he would occasionally shoot off on July 4. He got together with a new redneck wingnut friend to shoot off another show this year, which I’m sure was great to watch, and at least he’s trained, but yeesh.

Fireworks were illegal in Michigan when I was a kid, people went down to Indiana to buy them. You could also buy fireworks in Canada but you couldn’t bring them back to the U.S. you had to shoot them off in Canada. Made for a kind of weird 4th of July.

32
Cheechako  Jul 5, 2020 • 11:54:20am

The “Battle For the Mendenhall Valley” continued for the second night last night. Action started before noon both days. This year was different from previous years. In prior years most of the fireworks were color-full displays including many commercial star burst type explosions. This year the majority of the fireworks were just extremely loud explosions.

This year the City approved and then cancelled a commercial type display which was to be held over the channel. It was cancelled because they felt people would’t maintain the 6 foot distancing rules.

A new twist this year was the local Native Corporation imported a couple of shipping containers loaded with fireworks so they were readily available. I’m read that prices were double over the prices down south. The only kink was customers had to drive 20 miles out of town to purchase them. The Corporation had to set up their fire-works stand on land they owned to prevent any control by the City over their activities.

Perpetuating white supremacy is pretty much all the GOP has left these days, that and Christian ethnonationalism (which dovetails with their white supremacist ideology).

We must see their intensifying efforts at voter suppression for what it is - a blatant maneuver to create an apartheid state in which their white, Christian ethnonationalist base exclusively wields all political and socio-economic power.

That is the future the Republican Party has in mind for the United States.

Fireworks are illegal in NY state, and if they catch you bringing fireworks into the state they land on you hard - if you’ve got them in your car, they’ll arrest you and confiscate your car.

But that barely stops people. It’s a pretty short drive out to PA, where you can buy as many fireworks as you can cram into your vehicle. Fireworks have been going off for weeks around here, but last night went way off the scale - in my brother in law’s neighborhood on the Nassau-Queens border, they started in earnest around dusk and were still going nuts when we left around 11:30.

Not just diddly little peashooters, either. A lot of people were shooting off pro-grade stuff. Some dudes out in PA are probably still counting the money.

re: #64 jaunte

There’s no actual ‘culture war’, is there? It’s just a new way of describing disagreements between people who hate racism & discrimination & people who love it. Meanwhile, ‘woke’ has just replaced ‘politically correct’ as the most pretentious way of saying ‘not a massive bigot’.

It’s also a disagreement over the meaning and interpretation of history.

Those of us who understand that the complex history of the USA is filled with both good and bad and recognize it as such. We don’t shy away from the darker corners of our nation’s past and know that it must be taught dispassionately and objectively, not to condemn, but to enlighten us as a nation, so that we don’t repeat the mistakes of our forefathers.

And then there are those who insist on embracing only a mythologized version of American history and will not tolerate any illumination or mention of the more tragic and disturbing chapters of our history as they believe than any criticism, no matter how instructive it may be, is a blanket refutation, a denial, of what our nation’s meaning and purpose is.

They probably had to take it all out of stock due to potential contamination. If they press charges against her they can total up the cost for every mask on that rack. I hope they do.

But her rights were somehow infringed?

We had a similar experience last night here in South Jersey. Apparently NJ has relaxed fireworks sales laws over the last the few years. My partner also commented that she had read that a lot of fireworks display companies were practically giving away munitions that were going to go to waste, since they weren’t be hired for any shows.

We didn’t have the smoke issues you had, but goddamn; it really did sound like a war zone. If there are any vets with PTSD in my neighborhood, they had a bad night last night. I’m thankful our dog does’t give two shits about fireworks noise, although one or two were loud enough that even he was like “WTF?”

I know I’m channeling Abe Simpson here, but I’m seriously thinking about raising the issue next town council meeting. We basically had borderline professional grade fireworks being set off by untrained amateurs in a residential neighborhood. I really fail to see how that is not considered a major hazard.

No I don’t. That’s not the point. My point is that while it’s nice to nominally see Republicans taking shots at Trump, they’re still Republicans. They still believe women should be turned into baby factories, cops should be allowed to shoot whoever they want, and that voting should be as difficult as possible.

The ads are entertaining and if they put Trump on tilt, so much the better. Maybe they’ll sway any fucking idiot independent voters. But these guys are a novelty act and hopefully people aren’t treating them more than that.

Twenty years ago, you’d be absolutely right. You’d need a studio, and a whole team of videographers and technical help, and the way you’d get national attention would be by making massive media buys.

But today… Lincoln looks like a couple of really good internet trolls and a couple more guys with hot video editing skills. They were turning stuff around on the Friday event before the speech was over - that’s not a large operation, that’s just confident expertise. And that’s about all you need these days. A few good computers and the skills. Posting an ad on Youtube and Twitter costs nothing. Once people have started listening to you, getting their attention costs nothing.

My understanding is they’ve only really purchased ad time with the deliberate intent of shoving their work in Trump’s face. That costs money but this early in the year not large amounts. Lincoln isn’t trying to win the election, it’s just direct personal trolling.

That’s why their work is so punchy. It’s personal assassination.

Looks like we might have a name for the woman who trashed the masks at the Target:

We have IDed the woman as Melissa Rein Lively the CEO of The Brand Consortium

And it seems that she needs help:

Her entire story was from 8 Am (ish?) - 2 PM? The husband wants a divorce and kicked her out, so she went to a hotel. Went to Target, tried destroying it, and got kicked out. Got an Uber back to her hotel. Immediately went shopping, bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff using daddy’s credit card (literally). Was eventually stopped because she refused to wear a mask. Got kicked out of the hotel, walked around with hats ON HER FEET because she apparently lost her shoes. Got another Uber to her house. When she went into her house, her Range Rover was there (somehow) and she tried to leave. The husband stopped her, took her purse away to keep her there. Called the cops. Told the cops how much of a threat her husband is, told them he had unregistered guns, anything to get HIM arrested Then here we are.

I’m having the problem on my Acer Win10 laptop, no matter which browser (Firefox, Chrome, Edge). If I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll try one of my tablets

Regarding the woman reeking havoc in Target, it’s unfortunate that it’s difficult to distinguish between some one with mental issues/illness in need of help and some one flipping out because society is currently questioning their privilege.

Leaving most monuments in place while stating the inhumanities associated with them is a better lesson for future generations than tearing them down indiscriminately in anger.

- is that why those monuments were erected (because they all were, voluntarily, long after the fact)
- if you go see any of them is it clear and obvious why they are there and what their ‘lesson for future generations’ is?

- im pretty sure there is no ‘stating the inhumanities associated with them’ posted at any of them by the erectors or maintaners

re: #110 Mattand

We use them until we don’t need them and then discard them. While they are helping, don’t slap their hand and refuse it. That’s the kind of shit that has gotten the left in general nowhere fast in the past.

Basically it boils down to this. The Lincoln Project Republicans, and the GOP in general are masters of media. Masters of getting a message out.

Democrats and the Left are fucking HORRIBLE at this. We know there’s nuance and complexity to shit, but refuse to simplify the message and leave the wonk stuff for later. That’s why the LIncoln Project is putting out excellent ads and great talking points, while we still think “DefundThePolice”, instead of any one of dozen or so other better ways to say it there are, is a slogan that’s going to win friends and influence people.

We need their PR people as long as they are on our side. It sucks, and I’m sorry, but it’s a hard truth.

Coop is a ball of Coop and it’s catch as catch can. So I just fire through and get some keepers I post here. He’s shedding his puppy floof slowly and and he’s in mid shed for True Coop.
I’m curious to what he finally looks like.
Had him going on 10 weeks and he weighs 8 lbs and looks like a drowned rat when completely wet.
Snow should be a real treat.
Be well.

Back in… well sometime in the GWB era I had a friend of the far left variety who consistently said “If voting could change anything they wouldn’t let you.”

I’d love to throw that in his face and get him to explain all the voter suppression that’s been going on since then.

I just got back from a little Teddy potty walk around the apartment complex. There was some one in the pool area (they’ve opened the pool area where there are lounge chairs and tables but not the pool and limited it to 11 people). They were listening to some AM talk radio going on about how not wearing a mask is an expression of your freedom.

It’s not going to stop until there are consequences and enforcement. 100 bucks the first time you refuse to wear a mask and act like a grown up. 200 the second time. 3rd time is mandatory 2 weeks in jail, 1000 dollar fine and a psych eval. Throw some community service in there too. Clean up dog shit at the county animal shelter or clean up a soup kitchen after mealtime. Let them cry. Boo. Fucking. Hoo.

It’s obvious to me that there are *a lot* of Americans who are just complete fucking idiots, who among other things don’t understand freedom, like power, comes with responsibility.

Way too many Americans have shown that they can’t be trusted with freedom. They abuse it. They break it. They twist it to mean things it doesn’t. They are now literally a danger to themselves and others. Dunning-Kruger syndrome is costing lives now.

I’m not going to advocate getting rid of Democracy, and let Putin and GOP Plutocrats win, but what I’d like to see a discussion of, is how to we fix this? Really how do we fix this?

“Money to education” is not a sufficient or valid answer to this. That’s how you maintain it when it’s fixed.

as long as I and mine can get vaccines, rigght now i don’t care what they do

I’ll worry about them and society at large and those who actually can’t vaccine later

Voting is just the beginning of your work as a citizen too. People forget that WAY too much. Public meetings about plans and policies for your community happen all the time. It’s not hard to find the info. And I do not give a flying monkey’s ass who gets elected, it’s still our job to watch what they are doing, what they say, who is voting for what, etc. Americans are very complacent about this stuff and now here we are.

I would love for a forensic accountant to go through Greenwald’s finances to track down now much Russian funding he receives, if any.

Greenwald is a useful idiot, and not just to the Russians. His continued presence; indeed, survival; in Bolsonaro’s Brazil is the most reliable indicator we have that Bolsonaro is as much in Putin’s pocket as Trump is.
