An ode to their live performances and the energy of their shows the video comprises over 10 years worth of never before seen footage taken on the road, cut with a new live performance shot remotely in the band’s Gothenburg studios. It takes us through a visceral visual replay of the bands stories and memories, through captured personal moments and performances across the globe, all fragmented as if within the mind’s eye, the visuals constantly interlinking with the present day performance.

Created entirely in the last two months by an international team—with archive footage by the band and Swedish filmmaker Pether Lindgren collected, curated and edited into the video alongside a the new performance, filmed in Gothenburg and remotely directed by Chris Saunders from his home in Paris and edited by teams in London—the final results are a testament to what can be produced during the heavy restrictions of lockdown.

Dogs are so amazing.

“…A dog’s nose can perform at least 10,000 times better than ours. Specifically, dogs can pick up on low-molecular-weight compounds that easily evaporate at room temperature and often carry an odor—what scientists call volatile organic compounds. Canines can detect one such part in every trillion.

As a result, dogs have demonstrated uncanny olfactory abilities. They’ve sniffed out melanoma skin cancer in humans and detected pregnancy in cows just by picking up scents in bodily fluids.

So what exactly are canines detecting at archaeological digs? “Our dogs are not actually searching for bones,” Glavaš emphasizes. “They are searching for the molecules of human decomposition.”

Technically, the VP is supposed to just stay alive for 4 years and twiddle their thumbs until the President dies or the Senate needs a tie breaker vote.

AFAIK George Washington actually kicked John Adams out of meetings and out of the pre-White House executive office because it wasn’t his job to be there or do anything. John Adams was bent about it too and ranted about how useless his position was.

I would think the VP, besides staying alive and being a tie breaker, is an advocate or assistant to a POTUS in driving POTUS policy. In some cases, a VP may be point on a specific and important task.

But ‘stiffening’ the policies of a POTUS is sorta a weird take.

Doing some IT training and it turns out Spanning Tree Protocol was created by Radia Perlman. Now that STP is crushed by huge networks and massive data, she created TRILL to solve that. And she’s got 100 patents.

If that wasn’t enough, she made a poem about it:

Algorhyme
I think that I shall never see
A graph more lovely than a tree.
A tree whose crucial property
Is loop-free connectivity.
A tree which must be sure to span
So packets can reach every LAN.
First the root must be selected.
By ID it is elected.
Least cost paths from root are traced.
In the tree these paths are placed.
A mesh is made by folks like me
Then bridges find a spanning tree.

Hmmm…

Seems the Obama/Biden administration had a deal called the Trans-Pacific Trade Pact in 2016 idling because they couldn’t get it through the Senate which *cut the hamstrings of the Chinese with the full agreement of almost everyone else in the Pacific Rim* when they left office, waiting for Hillary to implement. But then the Bernie Broze went all google-eyed over it and Hillary backed off of her support for it.

It was there, waiting to be implemented. Now Biden is being blamed because Yertl the Turtle wouldn’t let it come to the Senate floor?

Ridiculous.

I’m off to bed. This should be a bigger story, because it is so full of bulkshit.

Sweet dreams.

That might make it easier to explain the direction it’s been taken. But no, the Gray Lady is suffering from the same malady that struck MSNBC in recent years: The idea that the only way to compete for viewers/readers is to become a low-grade copy of the competition. For MSNBC it was Faux and for the NYT it is the Wall Street Journal.

Dr Lizardo  Jul 5, 2020 • 10:31:41pm

Morning, all.

I saw Ouija Shark mentioned in the previous thread, so I had to look it up.

OUIJA SHARK follows 5 young women on a getaway who accidentally stumble upon a Ouija board and summon the vengeful spirit of a great white shark. This outlandish concept is not too far fetched for the director who has previously released the films “SHE-REX,” “JURASSIC SHARK” and “RAIDERS OF THE LOST SHARK.”

It’s quite the low-budget flick, apparently.

Having had no knowledge of Brett Kelly’s* caliber of film making beforehand, I was immediately thrown off by the extremely low quality. The film was shot on a budget of $300 CAD ( $216 USD), a prop shark taking up the majority of the costs, at 200 bucks. Most of the actors worked in exchange for exposure as Brett Kelly’s films have gained worldwide audiences and thousands of views on streaming services such as Amazon Prime and Tubi.

*Brett Kelly is the actual name of the director - he uses a sort of Alan Smithee so he can distance himself from the films if he needs to.

Here’s a review: fearforever.com

So every year I tell myself I’ll get it done early, and every year I leave my taxes to the last minute. But now after three hours of hunting, I’ve chased down all the forms and documentation and updated the spreadsheet I use for calculations. Nothing left to do but the math and (shudder) the capital gains worksheet. Rough calculations suggest that I’ll owe little.

I’d resolve to do it early next year, but that’s never worked before.

Bacteria are much much larger than viruses — a good size comparison would be a Greyhound bus versus a chihuahua. Medical use masks like the now-famous blue N95 masks are a lot more effective in preventing the transmission of both bacteria and viruses than “civilian” cloth masks. Medical masks are used by people trained to wear them under supervision and they follow protocols for mask use and disposal when they are presumed to be contaminated and no longer fit for purpose. Cloth masks, on the other hand are chosen for their pretty patterns and not their fit or efficacy and worn day after day with unsafe handling between use. Epidemiologists worry that they provide a false sense of security, tempting people to go to bars, shops, theatres etc. in close proximity to other people “because I’m wearing a mask!” rather than staying as far from everyone else as is humanly possible for as long as you can.

TL:DR — cloth masks are somewhat useful in reducing the spread of diseases including COVID-19 but they do not make the wearer invulnerable.

Aye. Even a bandana with strict change protocol (change 1-2/day and on exposure) puts a small dent in transmissibility because it dampens the spread of much of the aerosol droplets. And if used wrong, even a N95 is for naught.

Also, given the discussion that erupted in the room where this was posted, for those of you Lizardim that have had the ‘rona and have had a positive antibody test for the bug, consider offering becoming a serum donor, especially if the virus hits the fan. Serum treatment is old-skool, but from what I’ve understood, it’s one treatment with effective results against this [REDACTED] thing, even though it comes with its own issues.

Looks like the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic will likely accelerate the ongoing retail apocalypse might well prove to be correct:

A research report from UBS predicts that 100,000 brick-and-mortar U.S. retail stores will close by 2025, in a trend that started before the pandemic and has accelerated amid coronavirus-related shutdowns.

axios.com

The article notes that the only stores bucking this trend are “dollar”-type stores…they’re expanding, which also points (at least to me) to a further rapid deterioration of the American middle class.

I do mine superbowl weekend and say that everyone is celebrating my finishing them.

re: #13 Jack Burton

Technically, the VP is supposed to just stay alive for 4 years and twiddle their thumbs until the President dies or the Senate needs a tie breaker vote.

AFAIK George Washington actually kicked John Adams out of meetings and out of the pre-White House executive office because it wasn’t his job to be there or do anything. John Adams was bent about it too and ranted about how useless his position was.

The VP used to be the loser of the presidential election until it was formalized that it’d be someone from the same political party (hence Burr being Jefferson’s VP).

Now? VP has long been a patronage job - a pat on the back for a job done to the party, and after JFK, it became more important that the person have skills beyond merely balancing the ticket. Balancing the ticket (ideologically, geographically, etc.) is still a key, but now we also have a more active VP taking up policy as with Cheney under GWB. VP can also help with policy especially if they know key figures in government and can work to get policy enacted (Biden), but under the current admin, it’s all lies all the time, and Pence is nothing but a sycophantic liar.

But Trump’s failures on China are somehow Biden’s fault? That’s laughable on its face. Trump promptly fucked up everything he touched. He started a trade war that slowed the economy - pushing us into a recession even before covid19 slammed us right into a depression.

And Trump’s still going off about how everything is China’s fault, except that China didn’t force Trump to ignore the crisis, refuse to mask up or social distance, and there’s still no nationwide standards, which is why we’re seeing nationwide spread, and the efforts in places like NY will be undone as people move about the country ignoring social distancing and masking protocols imposed locally.

It goes back to the fact that Trump hasn’t bothered to implement nationwide air travel restrictions on masking, social distancing, and seating arrangements that would reduce spread and chances of infection.

The sheer incompetence here is adding to the body count - that’s all on Trump. All of it.

As I’ve been saying, the Fox propagandists are more than happy to have *you* risk your lives for them to make more money and for their backers to make more money.

They aren’t returning to the studio to work as pre-covid19. They’ll be the ones masking up and protecting themselves while railing on the “loss of freedom” because you can’t wear masks.

Now cases are out of control nationwide, and we’re going to see cases start to inch up in the NYC metro area too because people are fucking stupid and think that the pandemic is over because we can go to the beach or pools or visit other homes/businesses.

This is madness. There’s no national strategy. Depraved indifference isn’t a plan. Wishful thinking that this goes away soon isn’t a strategy.

But that’s all Trump has. There’s nothing there, but the GOP will continue propping him up, touting a single month job figure ignoring all the context, and that the economy is wrecked, or that once PPP runs out we’re right back in the shit because businesses are going to re-close when cases soar locally - and the body count will follow.

re: #105 Backwoods_Sleuth

Over the weekend there was a story that got buried in all the rest of the news about how Ethiopia was about to begin filling a reservoir behind a new dam on the Blue Nile. That’s the principal water source for Egypt more than 500 miles downstream (and one country removed). Nearly all Egyptians rely on the Nile for their water, agriculture, and their very existence, but damming the river means that water flow could be reduced.

There were talks to try and balance all the competing interests, including Ethiopia’s own water and energy needs, but they broke down. The US was mediating that whole thing.

Now, there’s a concern that Egypt might consider military action against the dam as it fills.

Good for you. I don’t think all the reports I need would be available by then, but it’s a goal to strive for (and one I will never meet, I’m sure).

I don’t know when you get all of your reports, but some other suggestions:
Do it by President’s Day and claim that mattresses are being bought in your honor.
Do it by Easter and say that’s why rabbits are laying chocolate eggs.

And when Adams was president, I doubt Tommy J stiffened any of his policies. I particularly remember some disagreement on the Alien and Sedition Acts. (but that was was when the VP slot was for the runner up).

I’m going to take off work July 14 to work on mine. Unless we get another extension.

Have mine spread out all over the living room. One downside to procrastinating. I never record checks in a check register (yes, I still write checks sometimes.) My online account only displays actual checks for 14 months, and I have some that I wrote early last year for large amounts that I can’t remember what they were for. Need to call the bank and see if I can get copies. (I’m about ready to just write a check for some random amount and file for an extension—I’ve done that before and it seems to have worked out.)

The VP office as we know it today, didn’t really come into being until the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations. IIRC, Truman didn’t even get national security briefings during the Roosevelt Administration. And Ike relied on Nixon to get some stuff done legislatively - in part, likely, because he was recently a member of both the House and Senate.

The practical and technical role of the VP are quite divergent. Practically, they are now part of the administration. But technically, by the language of the constitution, they are really part of the Senate, with a very, very limited role.

Yeah, that’s probably about right. Partly because the presidential nominee was chosen by the convention, and the VP was usually the result of horse trading. It could probably still happen if the presidential nominee tries to choose someone unacceptable to the party base. Like imagine if McCain would have gone forward with nominating Lieberman in 2008? No way there isn’t a floor fight over the VP.

Hell, to this day, I don’t know why anyone would actually want the job. This particular case, with Biden likely serving only one term, is an outlier. In most cases, you’re tying your political fortunes to someone else - and while you will probably get the nomination, your odds of winning seem to be pretty low. Nixon didn’t win when Ike was termed out. Neither did Humphrey. Rockerfeller didn’t even get the nomination. Mondale got crushed in ‘84. Quale never had a chance in ‘96 or 2000 (and we won’t even talk about Gore in 2000). GHW Bush is the embodiment of an outlier in this regard.

Agree mostly: prior to WWII, the only VP-as-agreed-successor that comes to mind was Martin Van Buren. And that didn’t work out all that well for him, anyway….
But I disagree about Teddy Roosevelt: he wasn’t one to hold back much on advancing himself: if McKinley hadn’t been shot, he (Teddy) would have likely been vigorously pushing himself for the top slot in 1904. Though whether he would have gotten it or not is an open question (most of the GOP hierarchy disliked/distrusted Teddy and sandbagged him in 1908).

And now it’s Oregon’s turn…

Group Arrested After Allegedly Targeting Black Family At Beach With Racial Slurs, Nazi Salutes

Several men were arrested on a beach in Oregon Saturday night after allegedly hurling racial slurs and Nazi salutes at a Black family.

When police arrived, the men allegedly challenged the cops to a fight and shot off illegal fireworks. Seven Washington state residents were ultimately arrested and charged with rioting, interfering with police, disorderly conduct, harassment, possession of illegal fireworks and offensive littering. One man was also charged with resisting arrest.

Details from the incident came from a Lincoln City Police report — the victims were not identified, and it wasn’t immediately clear Monday whether the arrested men had legal representation.

A man of the same name of an arrestee Saturday, Gennadiy Kachankov, was arrested in May last year for allegedly stabbing a man in nearby Battle Ground, Washington, local reports noted.

Two ways immediately come to mind.

First is to get a doctor to write a prescription by either lying or shopping for a sympathetic doctor .

Second, purchase the veterinary version. Which is often for sale to non medics. And is likely the exact same thing as the human version.

Btw Azithromycin, as I understand it, is an antibiotic, not an antiviral.

JFC, you have a choice between a kind, normal person or a total fascist who wants to lock you up, and you’re concerned that the kind guy is too boring to get people to the polls? I need to stop watching this crap.

After four years - especially 2020 - I want boring. I crave boring. Fuck, I demand boring.

I do have to say there were 3 things that did Gore in:
1. Elian Gonzalez
2. Palm Beach County’s Butterfly ballot
3. Gore’s performance in first debate.

Only the third was under Gore’s control — but I remember my reaction in real time when watching the debate with my husband. I was screaming at the TV: “Where is Ralph Nader now that we need him”. No — I didn’t vote for Nader, but both Gore and Bush were so terrible in the debate, it seemed we needed another candidate to speak to the public

Doctors visibly sigh with relief when I tell them that I know you can’t use antibiotics to help with viruses because so many people expect it.

Trump is dumb, but his campaign thinks his supporters are dumber.

Well, I mean, at this point they’d almost by definition have to be.

Biden’s up 10+ in all the polls, but media needs to gin up a controversy by claiming an enthusiasm gap?

Explain the 10+ gap and that gap is growing with each batch of new polls. Biden’s leading even in what had been considered safe GOP strongholds. Explain that.

There’s enthusiasm alright, but it’s the kind that doesn’t get people to come out to Klan rallies with Trump. People are dying to show up for Trump’s Klan rallies.

He’s not an Obama type candidate. Dems usually don’t do the transition thing but Biden is doing it well. I’m in no rush for a Biden rally but I’ll gladly vote for him and encourage those I know to do so too and that matters just as much if not more than a rally.

The media zombies want content they can broadcast. That is what Trump provided in 2016 and it worked.

It seems to me that the talking heads in mass media are part of that ecosystem. They are hired to act as the role of ‘progressive’. There may be some who actually deeply believe what they are spouting. I am not convinced. however, that this number includes the majority.

That it destroys the country and the system that they live and work in, doesn’t seem to have entered into their consciousness.

How Freedom Became Free-dumb in America
This gem in it…

For the Greeks, “idiot” carried a precise and special meaning. The person who was only interested in private life, private gain, private advantage. Who had no conception of a public good, common wealth, shared interest. To the Greeks, the pioneers of democracy, the creators of the demos, such a person was the most contemptible of all. Because even the Greeks seemed to understand: you can’t make a functioning democracy out of…idiots.

No idea but yeah it’s hard to frame Biden as a radical. And that’s fine. I don’t need a radical. I need a President and Biden acts presidential.

I’m right there with you, but the only progressive guests that get booked on these shows are the one swilling to whine about Democrats. They have a financial stake in their whining.
