“It’s no secret that horror shorts have the propensity to be formulaic: creepy thing in the shadows menaces protagonist, and then, finally pops out for a final jump scare. Boom! Cut to black…rinse and repeat…

Granted, there are various takes on the template, often dependent on a high-concept hook or elevated by production polish. But, when you boil it down, films of the genre often fall victim to its tropes.

Bucking the trend, Caleb Phillips, Other Side of the Box is anything but predictable. It’s a rare example of genre suspense where you have literally no idea where it’s going. It’s full of misdirection and structural surprises that all work together to subvert expectation. Moreover, where most horror films take great care to not reveal the “creature” until the very end (before that final jump scare), Phillips basically does the opposite: in the film’s best creep-out moment, we get to see the “thing” right smack dab in the middle. It’s a perfectly executed moment that is both uncanny and scary. And, so, the film focuses on a different creepy idea: that of knowingly being watched and, to persevere one’s self, being unable to look away.

As Phillips writes to Short of the Week:

“I was so taken with this idea of terror coming from something as simple as being stared at, and the imagery of the head in the box deeply unsettled me. I’m a huge fan of cosmic horror and I wanted to make a film that felt more like an investigation instead of running from a monster.”

The film, overall, succeeds in its mission. It’s fun to discover the “rules”of the scenario in real-time with the protagonists and this structural drive allows the film to find new things to present to the audience along the way. Many genre shorts run out of steam once they reveal their central high-concept trick. Box, rather, keeps building complexity and tension, getting better as it goes.

Other Side of the Box won the Grand Jury Award for best midnight Short at SXSW in 2019, and as that accolade from that particular category would suggest, the film definitely skews strange. But, it’s also not inaccessible or abstract. That’s an important distinction. It’s a film that makes up its logic, but in doing so, never loses the audience. The mythology and character choices all feel like they make sense in the moment. And, of course, by relying on traditional genre thrills and suspense, it feels inherently watchable, never getting tripped up by its own inherent strangeness. It’s both bizarre and creepy in equal measure.

Endings (especially in shorts) are hard. This one is a bit tough to decipher, but structurally, it feels like the film builds to a place of satisfying climax. And, thankfully, Phillips never feels like he resorts to easy tricks of the genre. It’s the kind of film with such a unique hook and central image that it’s bound to stick in the back of your mind for some time to come.” - S/W Curator Ivan Kander

re: #311 NO SMOCKING GUN!

Please dog, now that Bolsonaro is infected, please infect Trump. Please.

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if both of them bit the dirt?

You know, four years ago, I would never have said something like that in public. Four years of Trump and Russian stooges and their savage, moronic cultists, though, is something like a year in Vietnam: It is brutalizing in the sense of making one brutal and callous. It can harden your heart.
If this seems a stretch, well it is, but if Trump can compare his nightclub pussy-grabs to war service then I can certainly compare living under his barbarous regime to it. I actually served in Vietnam, and I know whereof I speak far better than he does.

As always, it’s telling that in making the arguments for and against reopening schools this fall, Dems and medical experts are arguing against in the name of public safety, while Repubs and MAGAts are arguing for in order to get Trump reelected.

I am all over the map on the school thing. I have a 6 year old at home. He’s an only child, and extremely social. Not having school is very hard on him. It’s also hard on my wife and I, as we attempt to keep him entertained while working from home.

But we are also fortunate that we can telecommute, and that we are able to help him with school work and have fun during the summer. Lots of parents are in a spot where they can’t stay home, and have to come up with day care.

I also don’t want unnecessary risks for teachers and administrators.

Currently, schools in my county are scheduled to open on Aug. 24th. They have been pretty responsible so far, so I trust they will have solid protocols in place.

Bottom line, though, is that if no one is going to pay parents to stay home, schools pretty much have to open in some capacity.

I’m sure that somebody will fact-check that statement by her staff, but it doesn’t really matter because she’s not the first to announce she won’t be there but rather the fifth. Grassley was first to bow out, followed by Murkowski, Alexander, and Willard.

re: #302 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

BoJo is where Trump got the asinine idea that we could just ride this out and develop “herd immunity”, and I will never forgive him for that. Everything since then has been, SEE, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE IF WE HAD JUST RIPPED OFF THE BAND-AID AND LET THE DISEASE INFECT US ALL!!!!!

Herd immunity requires > 60% (some say 70%, some 80%) of the Gen Pop to get infected. The problem there is that this thing has been running loose for +/- 19 weeks, we are still at less than 1% infected.

It’s all in the numbers, people. It will take a couple of years and 20,000,000 dead to achieve it.

And I thought we would have a vaccine this fall?

(note: Marburg/Ebola flavors starters showing up in 1978. No vaccine yet. Ditto for AIDS.)

Good Evening Lizards. I hope everyone is well and fed and safe. We’re ok here, one day at a time…

One question I am left with is, when all this does end/stabilize/if it even can, however awful that is, how in the hell are we supposed to ever have functional communities? Especially with the cult members all around us?

Survived one trip to the hospital. Planning on surviving another on Thursday. After that, we are self-isolating for 2 weeks in case I picked up some shit while I was there. I wore a face mask for 2 hours straight, which for me is new, though I know people who use masks in their regular day-to-day shift work are laughing at me.

How did blacks manage to survive with the KKK? And no I don’t mean they just took it.

As has been said, this has always been here. It’s just more out in the open. What that means is that we can’t ignore it, like some of us have had the luxury to do until recently. There are more of us than them. We have to remind them, and ourselves, of that fact. If they want to be cultists, they can do it at home and still have a job, or they can do it o ce outside and bot have a job.

Well retirement is off to a good start. I have two marginally functioning window air conditioners that I’ve been putting off replacing, but the Twin Cities has been having heat warnings so I finally decided that malfunctioning AC is better than none. My 125 year old house has counterweighted windows where some of the ropes have broken, so I use the universally accepted wooden stick method of holding up the window sash. While I was adjusting the screen, I bumped the stick, and the window fell onto two fingers on my left hand (index and middle). The skin on the palm side broke and there was much blood involved. No bones feel damaged. I ran my hand under cold water and surveyed the damages and decided I wasn’t going to need stitches (an assessment not based on any medical knowledge). I put on some triple-antibiotic ointment and the type of fabric bandaid that you need a blowtorch to remove.

The barely functioning AC had dropped the temp in the room to sub-80’s and is actually removing some moisture. Yay! I’ll sleep tonight. I’m on the Best Buy website now.

I’m hoping that the first full day of retirement goes better. Going back to clean out my desk in an empty office after 3+ months of everyone working from home was a weird way to retire. It feels like I dissolved from my job. Minimal closure. First state pension check (about 75% of SoSec) shows up in about seven weeks. First health insurance bill comes before that…

I don’t envy parents with school age kids right now. This whole situation would be a lot easier if we could just get people to understand that it’s ok for government to take care of its people in a pandemic. That it’s actually smart to set rules and guidelines so we can get to normal ASAP. And that science and medicine aren’t perfect but they have a pretty spectacular track record if you take a minute to think. Good luck to you all navigating this madness, stay well.

White parents will be shown “leniency” by having fines waived if they promise to send their kids to school, with the judge telling them that he “understands” their worry but “it’s the law.”

Minority parents will be fined as the judge lectures them that they are “what’s wrong” with America because their kids don’t get good educations and grow up to be criminals who are destroying “everything good and decent” about this country.

61
EPR-radar  Jul 7, 2020 • 6:27:27pm

If you take a historical long view, the idea that a government should be fairly minimal and only intrude on issues affecting the public interest is a very recent and very liberal idea.

For most of history, governments have mostly been variations on the theme of “might is right”, and the proper functions of government were limited to wealth extraction from the ruled by the rulers.

The US Republican Party has explicitly rejected governance in the public interest in favor of corrupt rulership by thugs and crooks.

67
Targetpractice  Jul 7, 2020 • 6:33:18pm

Two common themes will pop up in the first week of schools reopening:

- Parents keeping kids home due to fear of spreading infections, leading to state officials “debating” or outright “promising” some form of legal action against them for truancy.

- MAGAt parents getting all sorts of outraged and upset when they find out that teachers are enforcing masks and have desks spread out in classrooms, screaming that it’s “brainwashing” their kids to think there’s a danger when everything is perfectly “safe.”

I appreciate the offer but I think I’m going to be in pretty good shape. Worst battle I’m going to be fighting is lethargy while it’s so hot and muggy this week. It looks like Friday may be nice for spending some time tooling around on my scooter.

The heat is definitely a valid argument. It’s the worst time of the year for those in older spaces without central air. Stay safe, stay cool, and look forward to the fact that we have one of the shorter summer heat seasons in the lower 48.

On the continuing PPP saga:

Trump’s Religious-Right Backers Get Millions in COVID-19 Relief
by Peter Montgomery, Right Wing Watch

A LOT of them pulled in the big bucks!

Initially, the idea of tax dollars directly supporting clergy and church operations was defended as an extraordinary response to the unique situation caused by the pandemic. But on a phone call organized by Paula White’s One Voice Prayer Movement in May, former Rep. Randy Forbes of Virginia, founder of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, celebrated that “precedents for religious freedom” that are being set during the pandemic—specifically the unprecedented use of federal tax dollars to directly fund clergy and churches—“are going to endure long after this coronavirus has gone.”

None of that polite language describes what’s going on — the complete lack of coherency that should define the Trump presidency. Instead, his dead-end utterances get dressed up in news reports in order to make them seem understandable.

The announcement will be close to election day to reduce any ability to fact check. Fox will broadcast the news 24/7 while demanding a Noble Prize for trump for his saving the world from this deadly disease.

Will the cure be the cure? Nah. Just more snake oil.

Much like the Chernobyl disaster, the entire test failed because every fail-safe was voided by ignorant assholes whose power came not from experience but from loyalty to party doctrine. They ignored the experts who told them things they didn’t want to hear, they deliberately overrode safety measures because they believed such was a hindrance to their plans, and then when it ended in disaster they tried to blame others and cover up the mess.

So, for reasons unrelated to this story* I was at the doctor’s office today. Upon entry, I had my temp scanned (97 degrees) and was the only person in what is generally an occupied waiting room. Then I saw the nurse practitioner, who normally does not see me, and she said I didn’t need to come back for six months because my A1C was in a good place. I said, but the doc says 3-4 months. She said, do what your doc says. And then I tossed off, well, maybe in three months this plague will be over. Nurse practitioner: NOPE.

Yeah, it’s a data point of one, but it’s a healthcare professional in Arizona, so I thought I’d pass it on to you all.

*aka I had to go in so they’d release a prescription for a medication they were holding hostage until I went in…AND THEN the pharmacy says the insurance company is questioning the medication, which I’ve taken for the last 3+ years and which they approved 3 months ago…*rolls eyes*

re: #302 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

Based on the likely ultimate mortality of 1-2%, it will be 2,000,000 to 4,000,000 deaths in the U.S. Most of the mild or asymptomatic cases don’t show up among official counts because those infected have never been tested.

Re: AIDS vaccine. According to one source listing reasons for no vaccine:

Vaccines are typically made to mimic the immune reaction of recovered people. However, almost no people have recovered after contracting HIV. As a result, there’s no immune reaction that vaccines can mimic.

I don’t recall hearing of anyone who recovered after contracting HIV, except for those few people who apparently have genes that may prevent them from getting the disease.

NEW: Chief Justice John Roberts was hospitalized June 21 due to “an injury to his forehead sustained in a fall while walking for exercise near his home,” a court spokesperson says.

Doctors “believe the fall was likely due to light-headedness caused by dehydration.”

The thought of Roberts leaving the bench this year is almost as concerning as RBG — after all once in a while he makes the correct decision, certainly far more frequently than any of his GOP appointed-cohorts on the bench.

Now, his perishing in January would not be of such concern because his replacement would be selected by (God willing) Biden and a Democratic Senate. It would be a true joy if Biden got to replace several GOP judges.

Even 2021 is optimistic.

It is. Bacterial vaccines are relatively easy. Virus vaccines are bitch kitties. You think you’ve got it, and then they mutate. And even if they don’t, it’s still hell in a bucket.

COVID seems to be relatively stable (the key word is relatively), bit if it squeeches off sideways in the next six months, we have to start all over. It’s possible we could invent drug therapies, like we did with AIDS, which turned it from an acute to a chronic disease, but hemhoragic viruses like the flavors of Ebola just don’t respond to much of anything. You get it, and you bleed out, and it’s 80-90% lethal.

Four years of deaths, among a demographic cohort more likely to be white and less likely to be college-educated.

Four years of births, less likely to be white.

Four years of new college graduates.

Four years of migration and immigration, again likely to be more non-whites moving to each of those states. (Just the post-hurricane migration from Puerto Rico to Florida has significantly changed the demographics there since 2016.)

Colleen Johnson, executive director of the Old West Balloon Fest, said the event committee has been working closely with the national federation to address address concerns due to the pandemic. The groups wanted to know whether it was worthwhile to schedule the competition this year. Their joint decision was to postpone the event.

Scotts Bluff County is in its second year of a three-year agreement to host the National Competition. Even with the postponement, the local area will host the event for 2021 and 2022.

Virus concerns ground balloon competition (more at the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

re: #166 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Thread, twelve tweets, after which Ms. Rice goes into discussion with Hoarse Whisperer with a thoughtful and civil discussion on the hellsite known as Twitter.

[Embedded content]

I ask Ms. Rice to consider the following hypothetical: During the same incident, Mr. Cooper doesn’t pull out his cellphone to record the verbal altercation and thus does not have Ms. Cooper on video saying she’s gonna call the cops to have him “taken care of.” Cop arrives and he’s got a white woman with little dog and a black man in a situation that has been described to him as the latter “threatening” the former.

We’ll go ahead and waive for a moment the suggestion that Mr. Cooper may have been brutalized and/or killed by the cop and deal with an equally likely scenario: The cop begins by asking her (the caller) what happened. She describes how she was just taking her dog for a walk when this black man suddenly appears and starts harassing her about have her dog somewhere it shouldn’t be. She’s reattached the leash by this point, so Mr. Cooper’s assertions that it was unleashed in violation of the park’s rules fall on deaf ears. When she says that Mr. Cooper said he had dog treats in his pocket and would do “things” to her dog if she didn’t leave, the cop then turns to him and asks if he does have treats (hindsight: We know he did because he’s admitted to such and admitted he frequently uses them to entice dogs to leave their owners in order to force them away from the birds).

So the cop the asks Mr. Cooper his side of the story, where he does have to admit that he confronted her, that he did insist she leash her dog (again, dog’s back on its leash) and he did suggest he’d use dog treats he keeps in his pocket to lure the dog away. At this point, with the basics of the story corroborated, what’s the cop to do other than arrest Mr. Cooper? He could give him a citation, but it still means arguing in court that the whole thing is wrong, meaning money and time from his life that a man of lesser means might find himself financially crippled by. He could cut Mr. Cooper a break and order him to leave, but that means Ms. Cooper has broken the rules without consequence and will feel empowered to do the same routine in the future if confronted about her dog being off its leash. And if he orders them both to vacate, then she still walks free.

tl;dr, Ms. Cooper is only facing consequences for her actions because Mr. Cooper took steps to protect his own innocence.

Ayep. Without a cellphone, Mr. Cooper is a black man arguing his innocence before a judge. With a cellphone, it’s a white woman whose life is “destroyed” having other white women suggest she’s “suffered enough.”

This situation is in no way equal.

Somehow my state hasn’t managed to bend the curve into a vertical line despite the actions of Gov. Ricketts. Statewide:

Cases: 20,201 (+117, doubled since June 16)
Fourteen-day running average by county: Most—Douglas (seat Omaha). My county has surpassed both Hall (seat Grand Island) and Scott’s Bluff (seat Gering) to take a solid seventh place. Of note, Hall has one of the meatpacking plants which are centres of outbreaks here.
Most by age: 20-34, then tied 35-44 and 45-54
Women and men are roughly equal statewide (unlike the Panhandle)
Most by age hospitalised: 55-64, then 65 to 74
Recovered: 14,927
Most by age recovered: 20-34, then 35-44
Deaths: 282 (-2, there have been two more resurrections in Nebraska, we’re going to start looking like ancient Jerusalem here soon)
Most deaths by age: 65-74, then 75-84
State population: 1.7 million (91.2% white)
Recoveries by ethnic group: Whites only comprise 60%
Deaths by ethnic group: Whites comprise 77%

I realize that SCOTUS has probably been “distancing” themselves since the CV outbreak started, but really: the CJ bashes his forehead in a fall and it isn’t noticed reported for two weeks?

Just more motivation to make sure Trump and the GOP lose their ability to fuck over the country’s judiciary. I’m sure RBG is going to be composing (if maybe not submitting) her resignation right after Election Day…

Omaha World-Herald published my letter responding to the bigot Catholic railing against the Supreme Court’s ruling on gay rights.

The Public Pulse: Teachers, virus threat; Tort claim justified; Gay rights ruling correct

Mr. Charlie Aliano asserts (July 4 Pulse) that as a practicing Catholic, he is appalled by the recent Supreme Court decision prohibiting discrimination against LGBT people in business and government. No one on the Supreme Court struck down the First Amendment’s provision of free exercise in any church. That would include churches which accept LGBT persons in their services.

Fortunately our nation is not run on the Catechism of the Catholic Church or any particular person’s interpretation of the Bible. It is a secular state which allows free exercise for all faiths and none.

The argument “God said” has been used in our country to deny rights to women, to enforce slavery, to enforce Jim Crow, to enforce miscegenation laws and to enforce anti-Catholic laws.

The Constitution, which is the law of our land and not the Bible, explicitly prohibits the government from interfering in the affairs of any church, so they are as free to be as restrictive and non-welcoming as they wish. No Catholic Church is going to be forced to distribute the Eucharist to any person it deems unworthy.

By law your church may enforce its Catechism on its members as it wishes. It may not enforce it on anyone outside the Catholic Church, just as the Lutheran Church may not enforce its doctrines on Catholics.

Five of the Supreme Court Justices are Catholic; fortunately they ruled for the rights of all Americans, not their own sect. They are appointed to uphold secular laws, not church laws.

Aside from the likely outcome from an encounter with the police by Mr. Cooper of him being assumed to be in the wrong (such as the Central Park Five), if the police went ballistic (started opening fire) knowing the rather poor aim the cops seem to have, a person entirely uninvolved in this could also be injured or killed.

Apropos of nothing here: The Omaha World-Herald “Public Pulse” has a submission limit of one hundred words. (The argument by the paper is to make it easier to read on the Internet and to keep people constrained to a single topic.)

They allowed that very long letter to go through.

The hits keep coming. This asshat needs to withdraw so Alisha Shelton can be put on the ballot.

Nebraska Senate Candidate Used Racist Slur at a Party, Guests Recall (goes to the New York Times)

Drop out, Chris! (State senator Megan Hunt’s personal blog)

Dear friends and neighbors,

We need to talk about Chris Janicek. It’s time for him to drop out of the race for US Senate.

A person’s true character shows in how they treat those with less power than them, especially behind closed doors. Mr. Janicek is not a person who is fit to represent Nebraskans in Washington.

It doesn’t matter if you agree that what Janicek did was wrong or if you’re friends with him or if he was your candidate or if you like his cupcakes or if you think it’s “time for forgiveness and positivity” or whatever. I don’t care. That’s not what the conversation is about.

The reality now is that Chris Janicek doesn’t have a path to victory. At all. He knows that, and he is willfully withholding a path to victory for Democrats because he would rather stay in and sabotage the race than drop out and give Nebraskans a chance to vote for a viable candidate.

Since I seem to be all alone here …

I will not vote for Mr. Janicek. As much as I despise Sen. Sasse’s policies, suggesting your staffer be gang raped on a conference call is too much. I don’t care if he’s the most leftiest liberal who ever leftiested (and he’s not, Nebraska Democrats are fairly conservative).

I will leave the line blank in the election if he’s still on the ballot. This isn’t being a purity pony. No one has ever smelt the slightest whiff of scandal regarding Sen. Sasse in a matter like this. Mr. Janicek’s actions do not uphold my moral standards as a Democrat. His lame claim that a gay man can’t harass a woman makes that worse.

Alisha Shelton (who finished in third place) and Angie Phillips (who endorsed her and finished in second place) took half again as many votes as Chris Janicek. All other primary candidates have now endorsed Alisha Shelton.

From the NYT article:

“He had a history of making racial jokes and racist jokes and then saying ‘I’m just kidding’ if somebody got offended by it,” Mr. Whitaker said. “He was pretty well known for doing things like that. A lot of times people excused his behavior because he was a cake maker, so he would always bring cakes to parties — you know, ‘He’s kind of a racist, but he makes really good cakes.’”

Two other friends, Jono Anzalone and Kennedy Rogers, confirmed that Ms. Jones had told them about the remark soon after the party. Mr. Anzalone also said, independently of Mr. Whitaker, that Mr. Janicek had a reputation “of being very crass,” and that he had avoided Mr. Janicek’s bakery because of that.

LOL Necrophiliac Caillou.

Governor Pete Ricketts reduced his daily press conferences to once a week, then decided yesterday to simply cancel with no prior notice or explanation. So we at Seeing Red Nebraska will update you instead.

For starters, COVID cases in areas of Nebraska look like they are starting to surge, and this is particularly alarming because a number of factors are skewing that reported number downward.

As you can see, two of the state’s most densely populated counties had extreme surges in May, followed by a decline. Now on July 5 we are seeing daily totals we haven’t seen since the May surge, and they are arriving about two weeks after the Necrophiliac Caillou we have as a governor re-opened bars. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together knew opening bars was a terrible idea, and it has since been proven so in states run by other MAGAt governors, like Arizona, Texas, and Florida.

Let’s take a quick look at what working in Nebraska can mean right now. On July 16, Lincoln’s very cozy Zoo Bar is hosting a show by a band called Barnyard Stompers:

Half of the Barnyard Stompers duo is a brilliant scientist named Casey Miller. Kidding-he’s not a scientist; he’s a flaming scrotal cheese COVID denier who just knowingly played an in-person concert while suffering from active, diagnosed COVID, and he thinks that if you die from the disease he gave you, too bad, you were going to die anyway.

JFC the candidate for NE-3 now says he doesn’t want to be a Democrat after winning the primary, and wants to form the Nebraska Marijuana Party. He wants to drop out of the race now that he won.

After receiving Elworth’s email saying he didn’t want to remain a Democrat, the state party on June 8 requested paperwork from the Secretary of State’s Office for Elworth’s withdrawal from the race.

Elworth sent the Secretary of State’s Office an email the next day saying the state’s Democrats might be trying to forge his signature to get him out of the race.

He said he wanted to remain the party’s nominee. Now he’s telling people that he wants to leave the party, not the race.

Democratic nominee wants to switch sides, form new marijuana party (Norfolk, Nebr. Daily News)

State law only requires a person live in Nebraska to run in any district. Mr. Elworth lives in Omaha, not our district.

In 1968 ABC had several shows that would long be remembered but even more that are forgotten. I certainly don’t remember watching many of them. Some were iconic (Big Valley, Peyton Place, etc.) but so many were short lived.

But… I love the music. 1960’s TV had many great theme songs, much more interesting music than what was used decades later. Too much of the ‘80’s and ‘90’s TV shows used very generic sounding pop-music genre.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. NJ primaries were yesterday, and they were pretty much as expected. Booker won his primary for the US Senate. There weren’t any upsets for the House seats - Van Drew in South Jersey will face Amy Kennedy in November. Van Drew turned into a full blown Trumpist after impeachment, and Kennedy won the right to send him packing.

Florida’s ICUs are quickly filling up with covid19 cases that DeSantis says aren’t anything but an artifact of more testing.

Meanwhile, every GOP state mismanaging the covid19 crisis is seeing more cases per capita than any other country on the planet. Covid19 is running rampant, and the GOP are insisting on reopening even faster.

They think that they can take the Sweden route. Except that Sweden is exhibit A for what not to do. Sweden ignored social distancing/masking/shutdowns, and their economy still cratered, they saw more cases, and they didn’t recover any faster than the neighboring states that did manage to slow/stop the spread.

Also, here in Sweden, people for the most part trust the governement enough to follow their recommendations, which is why the recommendation route wouldn’t work in much of the US. Also, you would’ve had to do it when this whole shitstorm began, not in the middle of it. Also, apparently, Stockholm County hasn’t had a CoViD-19 death in a week (the rest of the country had 35 last day tho).

I was thinking of 1974’s Earthquake, one of the better disaster flicks. Some of the FX still holds up pretty well, especially the scene of the Capitol Records building falling down.

earthquake 1974

The rather crudely animated blood spatter at the end of the clip occurred because the FX team couldn’t get the blood spray to work correctly - the idea originally was the stunt people were to be sprayed with gallon after gallon of stage blood; however, the rumor persists to this day that it was because the scene originally was way more graphic (guts, dismembered bodies, etc.) and the MPAA threatened to slap an R rating on it, so they added that animated that cartoonish blood spatter in post-production.

re: #250 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

National polls continue to show Biden up by more than 10 points (and Trump’s doing all he can to make it 20+). But media outlets like the Times claim that there’s an enthusiasm gap for Biden.

Never mind that there’s dead ender GOPers - white nationalist bigots - who will carry out Trump’s stochastic terroristic threats and that’s increasingly who remains as a GOPer backing Trump. Everyone else is abandoning Trump in some fashion, and even longtime GOPers are trying to find ways to pivot to avoid getting drummed out of Congress.

We need a blue tsunami, and to keep voting blue nationwide to deny the GOP the opportunity to again ruin the nation as they did with Trump.

We also need to see more state polling of likely voters to gauge just how badly Trump is doing - if he’s making traditional states like Texas go purple, then he’s truly fucked and so too are the GOPers representing those states because Trump’s coattails work both ways - like a rug being pulled out from under them.

This virus doesn’t care about race, but it does care about income level. I suspect that if you did a comparison based on income level across the board, you would find that the poorer people are getting way sicker than the rich, because the rich can choose to stay away from dangerous locations. But our system has disproportionately punished blacks and Latinos, making them far poorer than whites on average.

Not that I think it will help Trump at all (probably the opposite), but dumping Pence as VP nom would be just the sort of stunt that a failing reality-TV show would try -in desperation- to recover its plummeting ratings (and save itself from cancellation).
Dumb as all hell, of course: but then, this whole shitshow of an Administration has been a sort of reality-TV spectacle anyway (and its Chief Buffoon has long made it clear that “ratings” are his main priority). - so I wouldn’t discount their trying it.

I grew up in the industrial Midwest at a time in the 60’s and early 70’s when things were booming for working-class white people: there was little economic anxiety or desperation, but I clearly recall that most of those guys were still pretty damn racist.

SpaceX is targeting Wednesday, July 8 at 11:59 a.m. EDT, 15:59 UTC, for launch of its tenth Starlink mission, which will include 57 Starlink satellites and 2 satellites from BlackSky, a Spaceflight customer. As usual, Facebook gonna Facebook:

(via Gizmodo) Throughout the first half of the year, Facebook seemed increasingly poised to ally itself with the definition of “free speech” favored by right-wingers. In the most visible examples, Zuckerberg and crew twisted and baked themselves into lumpy brain pretzels to justify not removing posts by Donald Trump spreading baseless lies about voter fraud and threatening violence against protesters. The CEO even went on Fox News to proclaim Facebook wouldn’t be the “arbiter of truth.”

Then, last month, Zuckerberg abruptly flipped his public messaging on the matter in response to the boycott, staff walkouts, and mounting political pressure. But talk is cheap and Facebook is worth hundreds of billions of dollars. In private, Zuckerberg assured staff advertisers would return “soon enough,” called the situation more of a “reputational and a partner issue,” and claimed Facebook wouldn’t bow to pressure from outside parties. On Tuesday morning, Sandberg posted a lengthy letter claiming that Facebook would do more to stand “firmly against hate,” but simultaneously laid the groundwork for the company to bail on any of the recommendations in a soon-to-be released “independent civil rights audit” (commissioned, for the record, by Facebook). At the meeting later in the day, Zuckerberg and Sandberg failed to meet any of the boycott campaign’s demands, civil rights groups present said.

In a statement to Gizmodo via email, the Stop Hate for Profit campaign wrote the “only recommendation [Facebook] even attempted to address is hiring a civil rights position,” but that the company refused to commit to making it a c-suite level role. There was “no attempt” by Facebook to address any of the other recommendations, according to the campaign. Those included no longer actively recommending users join hate and extremist groups via algorithm, proactively taking down those groups, establishing a civil rights infrastructure, third-party independent auditing of its anti-hate and misinformation efforts, and refunding advertisers whose ads run alongside content that violates Facebook’s terms of service.

We had a huge pin oak in front of the house. Huge. Old farmer tales say a big crop of acorns would be a harbinger of a hard winter. Some truth to it I think, but more likely good growing conditions. It was a magnet for squirrels and blue jays.
You would never even know there were a few dozen jays up there because they were perfectly quiet throwing acorn after acorn down their gullet.
I found it fascinating.
That tree on a good year would drop hundreds of pounds and that was just what hit the ground.
A few bad storms and the location forced us to take it down.

From balloon-juice.com:

In yesterday’s post about a Lincoln Project ad, there was some discussion in the comments about what the Lincoln Project founders would do after Trump’s defeat (if he’s defeated), as well as some well-deserved skepticism about their motivations.

If you put yourself in a position of a never-Trumper political consultant — the genuine kind, not the kind that will leave the box for President blank on their ballot because Joe Biden said something about taking down a statue once — you’re in a tough spot. If, Dios mediante, Trump is defeated and Democrats get the Senate and increase their majority in the House, who’s left in those seats on the R side of the aisle? Hard-core Trumpers in R+10 and better districts, that’s who. They’ll re-brand if Trump loses (“the Qanon party,” probably), but the ideology and motivations will remain. So that rules out pretty much every sitting Senator and Representative as a potential client if you’re a never-Trumper consultant.

But what about the challengers to the newly elected Democrats in 2022 and beyond? Good question — every one of the candidates who would want to hire a never-Trumper will probably face a primary challenge from a Qanon supporter. Having a never-Trumper on staff is a big problem that will probably hurt a Republican candidate facing a Qanon opponent, and as we’ve seen, these Qanon candidates can beat Republican incumbents in primaries.

So, it’s pretty likely that a never-Trumper consultant is politically radioactive in today and tomorrow’s Republican party. I’m not saying this to shed a salty tear for some DC bottom feeders who would be happily lining up to work for President Jeb Bush or President Marco Rubio if the chips had fallen a different way. I’m saying it because the modern Republican Party is rotten to its Qanon, OAN core, and Trump exiting will not drain the pustulated furuncle that the party has become. I don’t know if I’ll see a functioning, conservative opposition party rooted at least in part in reality during my lifetime. Certainly a never-Trumper who thinks that Trump is the only problem with their party is living in a rock-and-roll fantasy.

If I could stay at home, I would set up a mini-school (daycare) for my son’s friends to allow them to collaborate and keep them working on school work. Our school system is giving parents the option for next year of whether to keep the kids at home or send them to school. As for hearings, nothing in the Senate and the House will have the Usual Gang Of Republican Assholes disrupting the hearings.

I hope his book is in the final editing phase and that he starts showing up for a lot of long interviews on CNN and MSNBC.

I have a local five year old granddaughter and a two year old grandson. The latter just moved back to Ann Arbor from San Francisco.

I’ve been “retired” for 6 years. My wife retired six weeks ago and is providing 5 hours of childcare a day for the boy, whose parents both work at home in their home. We are gearing up to watch the two year old full time at our home during the day.

The five year old is supposed to start kindergarten but we’re all a bit iffy about that. Fortunately, the schools are allowing parents to choose remote learning which will probably be administered by my wife and I.

We are all within a pretty tight bubble but luckily our bubble includes the 20 acres of woods and meadows and the old farmhouse where we live.

They honestly just want to kill us all, just so they can act like they won some victory against a virus they’ve basically already surrendered to.

They want a fucking genocide because they can’t accept the idea that they’re not right on anything, much less these specific somethings.

Countless Americans will die, because we have a fucking Emperor in office who doesn’t fucking give a shit.

Well that’s because they weren’t the education centers they are today. They were “indoctrination” centers that needed to be de/underfunded to protect the Nation. Hence the push for private schools and vouchers.

I don’t agree with that. There were 12k H1N1 deaths. There’d have still been deaths just far less… But enough for conservatives to have done their thing (which includes not doing what that damn Democrat tell them because of rugged individualism).

Probably a great thing I don’t have kids in school. Because it would take men with court orders and badges to drag my kids back to school before there is a vaccine, a cure, or a near end to the threat. of the virus. They can obligate vaccination, can they obligate attendance without one? I doubt it.

But this is very different — far more lethal than H1N1. It’s hard to stop a disease when 99.9% of cases are mild. We learned from that experience and from Ebola — there was a pandemic team and CDC people embedded in China. We would have been involved in Wuhan in December when the first hints of this disease came out. We would have been leading at the very beginning.

H1N1 was much easier to control, just take a temperature and put people who have one aside for testing.

Obama was a nice, competent guy, but that is grade-a bollocks. If Obama had been president the coronavirus would still have arrived in the US. The difference would have been the federal response. Obama could not have stopped the insane state-level handling of the epidemic.
