“All the elected officials are switching from a live, in-person speech to videos,” Kyle Whatley, the party’s executive director, said during a town hall livestreamed Tuesday night. “They’re doing that for us in order to focus all the attention on the business of the meeting and to get everybody in and out of here as quickly and as safely as possible.”

Tom Friedman has some good ideas:

Over the years, I’ve had my reservations about New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman: very smart, too often glib and too often in thrall to shiny objects. But his column today is a real home run.

A very quick summary is this: Joe Biden should debate Trump only if two conditions are met, because otherwise the debate would give Trump unfair advantages:
First, that both candidates release their tax returns, thus equalizing their exposure to being questioned;

And second, and here I will quote Friedman directly, “Biden should insist that a real-time fact-checking team approved by both candidates be hired by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates — and that 10 minutes before the scheduled conclusion of the debate this team report on any misleading statements, phony numbers or outright lies either candidate had uttered. That way no one in that massive television audience can go away easily misled.”

No we aren’t. The really nasty thing with exponential curves is that once you get far enough on the x axis, the y axis increases with mindboggling speed.
Like, if you have an y axis which is at the height of the altitude of commercial jetliners (33,000 ‘/10,000m), even if you react correctly to input etc, the lag between reaction to results means that by the time you see any effects of you slamming on the brakes, you’re halfway to the moon…

As hospitals hit max capacity, new cases can’t go there so people die at a home without medical care or in triage tents outside the hospital, which spikes deaths. The dead bodies then have to be dealt with by the living who are now at greater risk of exposure. Inevitably some of them will get sick, but the hospitals are at max capacity…

Think like what happened in Italy except that things just kept getting worse.

There is no happy ending to this story.

Indeed. But there is clear potential for a hair-raising end to the story… What I don’t want to see is an indication that the increase stops at a specific rate but stays at that rate, because it would clearly suggest that the virus is spreading as freely as the R0 and environment allows…

The states affected by this can end it the way Italy did.

Red state governments are now caught between that, in which case their citizens will come after them with pitchforks — or continuing the “everything is fine” course they’re now taking, in which case their citizens will eventually count up the dead, the permanently disabled and the ruined medical infrastructure (they can’t go on like this for much longer) and come after them with pitchforks. Or guillotines.

Couldn’t happen to nicer people.

The right-wing loons constantly banging on about “Civil War” are really starting to get on my nerves - such as this nutcase over at SHTF

As I noted last week, the political left is a tool for a greater agenda. They are being used as a weapon of chaos by globalist interests. This is not “conspiracy theory”, this is a conspiracy fact. Millions of dollars have poured into Antifa and BLM related groups through elitist donors like George Soros and his Open Society Foundation as well as the Ford Foundation. Globalist institutions like these have been influencing the extreme left and promoting identity politics for DECADES. This is openly admitted. What we are witnessing in 2020 is simply the culmination of a half-century-long propaganda campaign that created the modern feminist movement, victim group status, entitlement culture, etc.

The reason for the agenda should be obvious: Chaos creates fear. Fear creates division and crisis. And, crisis creates opportunity (as globalist Rahm Emanuel once bragged). Meaning, the extreme left is going to start a war because that’s exactly what the global elites created them for.

Now, some might suggest that this places conservatives in a Catch-22 position; if we don’t fight back then we will look weak. We will be culturally isolated and eventually overrun and wiped from the history books. If we do fight back we will be giving the globalists what they want - A civil war that will tear America apart.

The suggestion by certain special interests will be that there is only one way out; use government power to turn the tide to our advantage. In other words, institute martial law.

Untreated mental illness is on display every day. They feel like the whole of American society is Out To Get Them … because Fox TV shows them endless loops of flames, black people in the streets, smashed windows, etc. etc.

The gun stores near me can’t keep ammunition on the shelves.

The Ghost of a Flea  Jul 8, 2020 • 11:36:56am

re: #47 lawhawk

I honestly think it’s more fucked up than that: while there is a profit motive, there’s also a motive I’d classify as “ego preservation.”

Abuse of power tends to involve three components: a loose justification for why the thing you’re going to do is actually okay, the egregious self-indulgent act that has to be justified, and the normalization phase is which pressure is applied to the victim(s) and bystanders to affirm that what just happened wasn’t really bad or wrong. And because abusers tend to be the kind of shallow conscienceless people that are comfortable having no framework for truth or sincerity, the last phase usually involves manipulation and coercion to compel a normalizing statement: the inauthenticness and context do not matter, just the *technicality* of the expiating words being said.

In the case of the schools opening, I think we’re seeing an extreme version of the coercive push to normalize. These people fucked up and did harm because they’re callous and thoughtless and ignorant, but they don’t want to acknowledge any of that, let alone feel shame or be shamed socially—so they’re instead trying to normalize the death and loss by viewing it as necessary or inevitable…but to really feel like they’ve avoided blame they have to compel everyone else to participate in the lethal mistake.

Pick your preferred scale—from the micro- of your average domestic murder-suicide to the meso- of Jonestown to the macro- of the Nero Order—you can see awful, conscienceless people make the same decision over and over: scream and threaten that everything is good and fine and normal rather than admit their plan was bad until everything is irretrievably broken, escalating until the final form of denial is to not just die, but to specifically require that other people die with you so that your death is not an admission of error.

They voted for criminal Rick Scott — twice for governor and once for Senator — and they voted for DeSantis and for Trump. They knew what these men were and still supported them. Of course, those who voted for the Democratic candidates were not guilty, but the others? If they can get the whole of the MAGAts out in force and suppress/miscount the rest of the voters, they might begin to stand a chance.

But I think that their strategy will switch to ensuring that this upcoming election is such an unprecedented clusterf*ck that they can claim that the outcome is invalid or indecisive or legally contestable and will continue in that vein forever.

That only works if the vote is close. Based on the polling now (and let’s be honest: Trump isn’t going to do anything between now and November that actually improves his polling), he’s going to get trounced. We might not be in ‘64, ‘72, ‘84 territory (yet), but ‘88 and ‘08 are in play as possible margins of victory.

This is from an inside-baseball article over at Vanity Fair about Republicans trying to right the SS Trump. This paragraph caught my attention, mostly because it’s just so pathetic.

Another option that’s been discussed is for Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to go over to the campaign full-time in the same way Ronald Reagan’s chief of staff James Baker left the West Wing to run Reagan’s ‘84 campaign. A source told me Kushner has said he’s not interested. “If I go to the campaign, Trump might not let me back into the White House,” Kushner told people, according to a person briefed on the conversation. “As of now, he intends to remain in his current role,” an administration official said.

I’m imaging Jared’s lips moving but Gilbert Gottfried’s voice coming out.

That’s certainly what I’ve believed and stated for a long time. He’s a conman controlled by Putin and he knows exactly what he’s doing. He doesn’t care to learn what’s best for this nation or how to handle any crisis. All he cares about his praise, money, and control — and certainly doesn’t care how many Americans perish in his efforts to retain power. He may indeed take pleasure in knowing that others are gullible enough to fall for his repeated deceptions.

- he already is a loser - everybody knows the presidency is a disaster and his reelection chances are slim to none
- if before the convention, he’d be the first (i think) to have the votes to win the nom and up and quit (i dont think anyone ever has). certainly the first incumbent

I have long recommended the Fort Worth stockyard arena as a venue for auctions that could replace Texas elections. It would be cheaper and quicker and the results would be largely the same.
It has some of the best auctioneers in the world, convenient air and road connections (including a heliport), ample parking, and plenty of seating for the lobbyists, fatcats, and foreign agents who would do the bidding. It even has VIP facilities for billionaires and Russian oligarchs. The pols would simply be herded onto the floor and the bidding could begin.
I see no reason that it wouldn’t be just as serviceable for the GOP state convention.

*Hot Damn!*

You all probably remember, about three years months ago, when Trump talked about getting disinfectant into the body and that would kill COVID-19? And then how we learned that Mark Grenon of the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing had sent Trump a letter a week prior to this nonsense extolling the efficacy of his industrial bleach concoction, aka “Miracle Mineral Solution” against COVID-19? (The letter to Trump had been provoked by a warning letter sent by the FDA on April 8 telling Grenon to cut it out. fda.gov)

The feds initially got a temporary injunction on April 17 telling Genesis II to stop peddling their industrial bleach (fda.gov). A federal judged granted a preliminary injunction on May 1 (bradenton.com). But Grenon persisted.

Today, the feds and a hazmat crew rolled up to the “church’s” headquarters and served some warrants and hauled away the following “sacraments” from the “church”:

50 gallons muriatic acid

22 gallons of the finished “Miracle Mineral Solution”

8,300 pounds sodium chlorite

Additionally:

The Associated Press is reporting that Mark Grenon, Jonathan Grenon, Jordan Grenon and Joseph Grenon are all charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to violate the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and criminal contempt.

It appears that the federal judge issued a permanent injunction in the case (a proposed permanent injunction appears at the bottom of the news story).

mysuncoast.com

Even when all the shit is coming down, some parts of the federal government are still working to keep people safe from quacks, cranks, tinfoil hatters and lunatics. It’s not enough, obviously, but they’re trying.

Here’s the DoJ press release. justice.gov

hi

Extremely local news update.

The plumber was here (cha-ching $75 travel charge) to check the water running down the outside of my house and other things (when you get him here for one thing, you make that $75 work for you).

The reason I could not find the leak by listening to the pipes is because the leak is in the reverse osmosis unit. Since that belongs to the village he couldn’t work on it.

I called the village clerk, who called the company the village uses to service the units, and they talked to the plumber to instruct him how to cut off the water to it.

The plumber will be back tomorrow with parts needed for the other jobs (no additional charge) and the mechanic for the r/o unit will also be here tomorrow.

In the meantime, we have a Britta water filter pitcher for just such emergencies.

We already have treatment for stupidity, it’s called a well rounded education. Unfortunately we underfund the fuck out of education and focus on the wrong shit when we do spend money on education.

I went to decent public and private schools through grad school. I somehow managed to get a master’s degree in a technical field without a single class on critical thinking, cognitive biases, or logical fallacies.

The problem isn’t stupidity so much as it is the inability to spot BS, lack of awareness of one’s blindspots, and an inability to critically analyze evidence.

That’s…disastrous.

For the banks/mortgage holders, first off.

What does “householders” mean? Does this mean owners, renters, or both? If it means both, it’s disastrous for landlords.

And if it is true, it means that there will be a vast number of people getting kicked out of their homes on September 1st and dumped onto the streets.

Possibly require a bachelor’s degree or in lieu of that a full military career to retirement as well.

Require release of educational credentials and tax returns for the last 10 years.

Conservative parrots are out in force announcing the latest edict of their religion.

“Schools must be open or must be closed. Why do Democrats hate education?”

Never mind that the government could repeal the 2017 tax scam tomorrow if the GOP gave a damn about dead children or parents.

Never mind there are more options than the ever-present conservative black-or-white thinking of open or closed.

As some health care officials have suggested, for those going bonkers staying in their homes, they can form small groups of trusted individuals they know are following health recommendations (with ejection from the group if they don’t). There is no reason why you can’t apply that to homeschooling as well.

My own town is considering this, since we have no cases. The two school districts which serve our town will not reopen any time soon, regardless of what Gov. Ameritrade wants. Elderly people with no children at home can also participate.

Small towns can copy Montana’s and Nebraska’s one-room schools which still exist. (Ours only closed in 2005, there is no reason we can’t reopen it. Cleaning is already in progress.)

In large cities, the small group idea also works, with the added benefit of Internet connectivity and large library systems to draw on.

Lots of new cases here in California.

For all our closures and health orders, what we’ve done successfully is slowed down the spread. If you look at the curve of infections it still looks like a “first wave”, a pretty continuous climb in new cases.

So we slowed the spread, and slowed down the growth in hospital cases and deaths.

But the virus is still spreading.

And now I’m noticing in the grocery store that the stores are slightly relaxing their attitude. E.g., the self checkout areas were only allowing a couple of people in at a time, now all the registers are open. E.g., we were not allowed to bring back in our own bags, but now we are allowed to bring in our reusable bags again.

It’s all kind of depressing.

We needed a national strategy to suppress the virus until a vaccine is found.

But we had no strategy.

Trump is the worst President in US history. Only the deluded trumpers think otherwise. The “independents” for the most part are pretty much not buying into Trumpism, and some Republicans have given up. Not that it matters to the Republicans in the Senate, as they are there to line the pockets of their friends anyway.

It’s no surprise that the nations that have handled the pandemic the worse are the US, Brazil, and Mexico. The first two are lead by fascist strong-man-wannabes, and the latter by a macho-man in charge of a government notorious for not being well managed.

The problem isn’t stupidity so much as it is the inability to spot BS, lack of awareness of one’s blindspots, and an inability to critically analyze evidence.

Which is why the Texas GOP explicitly stated that they are opposed to teaching critical thinking in their platform, arguing it undermines parental and religious authorities.

Conservatism cannot stand against critical thinking. Not teaching it is about conserving power, nothing more.

So I said to dude, such BS, right?

And he agreed but he’s pissed there aren’t any Biden ads on the network news. “He’s not doing anything” “Why isn’t he doing anything?”

Dude is still married to the mainstream model, since he doesn’t AT ALL live online.

Can you all help me explain to him that Biden IS doing something. He isn’t really listening to what I’m saying.

Tell him this: it’s too early for Biden “to do anything” but make occasional statements and speeches. He has no power, and any major attempt to influence things would just turn into “Why aren’t Biden’s plans effective?” And Trump is ten points down. What does Biden need to do?

Evening Lizardim from the scorching hot, humid, but dry wild north country. Hopefully the “hot” and “dry” parts change soon - it is definitely high summer up here. Minnesota is still maintaining its tenuous hold on a 3-4% new positive rate as the governor continues to dither over the political land mine that is the mandatory mask order. On that topic, more below the fold, so I will ask as always, how go things among the lizardfolk on this incredibly debilitating Wednesday?

“32% of householders missed their house payments in June.”

Followed by conservative states saying “you can’t vote with your car registration as your address.” I am quite familiar with this form of disenfranchisement.

Like you need to completely serve an entire term as a state governor, in the house, the senate, or a state level office, or in a state legislature to qualify to be on the ballot.

Possibly require a bachelor’s degree or in lieu of that a full military career to retirement as well.

Require release of educational credentials and tax returns for the last 10 years.

Independent medical board of physicians and psychiatrists must also clear you.

Definitely not the “require a bachelor’s degree” part. Trump has a degree. I don’t. I suspect I would be a better president and I would probably be terrible at the job.

Moreover, that education test brings back Jim Crow tests.

The physical test? How do you determine physicians and psychiatrists are independent? What disqualifies you?

The test is an election. An obviously unqualified person should not be able to get into a high office if people understood how their government and republic works, which is why conservatives work so hard to undermine civics.

re: #344 sagehen

Tommy Lee of Motley Crue went to my high school

And a surprising number of USC and Stanford football players, several of whom were pro in the 1980’s.

Here’s our list from wikipedia. I will note my interactions with two of them:

Alison Krauss, musical artist (attended, did not graduate)
Bill Geist, TV journalist, CBS Sunday Morning
Bob Richards, two-time Olympic gold medalist in pole vault
J Leman, football player
Somi (Laura Kakoma), singer
Yvonne Suhor, actress
Tyler McGill, Olympic gold medalist swimmer
Rod Fletcher, All-American college basketball player
Todd Peat, football player
Jordan Caroline, Basketball Player

Yvonne Suhor was in “Young Guns” and a couple of other movies. Before that, she was a waiter in a small Italian restaurant where I was a cook. We had a lot of fun during work. I’m still FB friends with one of her siblings.

Todd Peat played for the Arizona Cardinals (and I think his son was drafted highly last year). In freshman year I played football as a way to lose weight and get in shape—I knew I’d likely never play in a game. Turns out I was Todd Peat’s cannon fodder on second string. I lined up against him in practice. Me: about 125# (but small and chubby still); Todd: about 225#. When I played defensive tackle against him I just turned and ran until he chased me down and pushed me into the ground; on offense when HE was defensive tackle I just dropped and rolled at this feet. But it didn’t end there. We were in “chorus” class together. He was an untalented bass who could just barely remember his lines. I was the tenor who sang solos! For several weeks as class began he was behind me and would lean in and whisper “honkies n shit.” So I finally lost it and turned around and said “n*word and shit.” He laughed hard and we got on great. I knew how horrid the word was, but I said it anyway. In those days and in that context, though, it broke the ice in a way.

Looking back, I wonder if he was just trying to get me to say what he thought I believed. In a way, I guess it worked. I had lost all of my black friends by high school. One friend, the daughter of an AA Art Professor and a white mother, told me that she had to choose and since white kids would never accept her entirely she felt far more comfortable in the black student community. No one else really explained why. We self segregated. Maybe I was happy to let that happen. I don’t know. Race was a really charged issue in the late 1970s/early 80s at my school, so I know I took the cowardly route and just didn’t address it. It was an odd bond with Todd Peat (who, I’m sure, doesn’t remember me).

The test is an election. An obviously unqualified person should not be able to get into a high office if people understood how their government and republic works, which is why conservatives work so hard to undermine civics.

And this has completely failed. It wont be fixed by a civics education in a month, a year, or a decade. It will take a generation during which it will be fought against tooth and nail by those who wish to take advantage of things not changing. Americans also have a track record of getting bored with things and giving up the second it get “hard”. (See Reconstruction. See COVID-19.)

It’s not bad for the job to have qualifications and for them to be codified into law. Relying on “tradition” or everyone involved being good actors is exactly what got us here.

I’m still waiting to see what happens to people ignoring congressional subpoenas… spoiler alert: nothing because it relies on people just doing the right thing.

Oh man, my earlier post sent me down memory lane. I had forgotten that I played baseball against Todd Peat’s older brother, Earl. Todd was big and beefy; Earl was tall and lanky. Earl could throw a baseball at near pro speeds, but he had no control. He also wore his hat always a little off center. As a batter, you knew there was a fair chance he’d hit you. Even good batters had a hard time standing their ground in the box. My proudest moment in Babe Ruth was getting a hit off of Earl and also striking him out in the same game. I was 14 and he was 15. I quit after that season because baseball started to bore me, but mostly because our team’s assistant coach was my former PE teacher from middle school who tormented me every fucking day about being chubby and he didn’t let up much on the baseball team even though I had lost a lot of weight. Schuster—asshole.

Yeah, just line the UK where almost all conservative prime ministers and ministers have had degrees in politics, philosophy and economics for decades if not centuries, or France where almost all politicians and high level civil servants come from the Ecole Nationale d’Administration.

China seems to be well (if harshly) governed with leaders who have engineering degrees.

Thatcher had a masters in Chemistry, Jimmy Carter had a bachelors in Engineering.
