Trump wants to reopen schools to pretend that everything is normal.

Miller and DeVos want to open schools to create further disaster that will kill more non-whites than whites (Miller) and/or kill the idea of public education (DeVos).

Dark thoughts: saw the Trump TV ad about violence in the streets due to the “Defund the police” proposals that they claim would be implemented under Biden. My brother talked about escalating crime in New York and Chicago. And all I could think is that the police support Trump and they may deliberately sabotage crime investigations because they are unhappy with being called to account for their brutality. They may be working full time to help Trump’s re-election by slacking on the job and promoting the notion that our streets will never be safe under a Democratic administration. They want to give full rein to their fascist instincts — which Trump has enthusiastically endorsed. He likes the thought of seeing cops and the military waging war against protesters.

Hopefully the American public won’t fall for this tactic. But as I’ve said before, “Defund the Police” is a terrible slogan — anything that requires explanation is a losing message. Most voters aren’t going to be paying attention until after the “conventions”. Let’s not do or say anything that can confuse the typical voter who isn’t going to be spending time exploring the nuances of policies.

A poll came out yesterday (forgot where) that said nearly 80% understand that ‘defund the police’ does not mean what Trump is trying to make it mean. With a majority of Republicans, to boot.

I don’t even think to many Democrats are even using that phrase, TBH.

And I don’t see how slacking off on crime now proves anything about how crime will escalate in a Biden administration, though. It only shows that crime is going up now - under a Republican administration.

Them “slacking off on crime” is a scare tactic. And a reminder that they are special little snowflakes that should all probably be fired since they can’t do their jobs within the scope of the law and general decency without being constantly fawned over.

But the whole idea of an investigative slow down is basically play acting the Col Jessip monologue about us needing them on that wall. It’s bullshit, of course. Because mostly what is happening what always happens, they show up, they take a report and say they’ll “investigate” it but they won’t have any actual leads, so unless it’s a murder or some such other crime that catches the attention of local or national news, it’ll get filed away until someone requests a copy of the report for their insurance.

Speaking of “slacking off”, the police union next door to my town (Peabody, MA) actually tried to get 9/11 off as a holiday. That’s right, a day off for the anniversary of 9/11. I knew some cops think that people died for our sins on that day, but it’s also good to see it in plain sight.

The city declined to give them that day off.

Wilson, when he used to do regular appearances on Ana Marie Cox’s pod, basically came out as pro-choice (he did the personally but as a matter of policy thing, which, fine, whatever) and seems to hold the religious fundies in complete and utter contempt.

I’ve always been of a mind that there’s some space for a socially liberal/fiscally not insane party. Perhaps that’s what comes out of the Lincoln Project’s work.

They are not allies like France, Britain or even Brazil. Even before the war ended, they were working for their own anti western goals at Yalta.

As soon as Trump is out of Office they will be back to dog whistles and exploiting everyone else.

Consider it like WWII: the Lincoln Project is like the Soviet Union- doing a lot of heavy fighting and utterly necessary for the war effort but only helping us because their enemy is our enemy. They are not allies like France, Britain or even Brazil. Even before the war ended, they were working for their own anti western goals at Yalta.

As soon as Trump is out of Office they will be back to dog whistles and exploiting everyone else.

And much like the Soviet Union, by the time this is all over, they’ll be telling everybody that they’re really the people who brought down Trump and we owe them a great debt for their “sacrifice.” All that money that liberals are shoving into their coffers? Expect the excess to be used to attack Biden just as soon as he’s taken the oath.

I really like Rick. He’s closer to my political leanings than a lot of Dems. And I say this as someone who will never give another vote to an R and regrets every vote for an R I gave in the past.

He’s very entertaining, really enjoy his podcast with Molly Jong-Fast. And yeah, he’s probably closer to my leanings than a lot of Dems as well. I am, if I haven’t made clear enough here, very anti-populist as rule. And while I regret a few of my past R votes, I don’t regret them all (Arnold wasn’t a terrible governor, and then there was…. um, hmmm, hang on… lemme get back to you on that one)

It took people like my friend Amy Smith raising hell about COVID-19 at Kamp Kanakuk to get ONE of the camps shut down. (Amy normally goes after churches that cover up child sexual abuse, but this was egregious.)

Five days ago, Kanakuk planned on reopening for K-2nd grade K2 camp (a type of camp, my bad) and was going to have employees and volunteers sign waivers. Un-fucking-believable.

As of a few hours ago, other camps at Kanakuk were still open, per Amy.

I truly wonder how many kids are going to be kept home once school is supposed to be back in session. I cannot imagine being in the position of work so I don’t get evicted and lose everything or send my kid into a surefire shitshow. Especially K-5, where social and physical interaction are normal for social development. Younger kids are also adorable germ farms, and it’s impossible for one teacher to monitor a class of 30 kids every minute, especially in restrooms and cafeterias.

Americans have already proven they won’t do the right thing when people are watching. Imagine what’s going to happen when no one is. And I’m not even talking about teachers and other school personnel. All the fucking asshats who make a scene about the their freedumb are going to be screaming at teachers and office staff if their babies have their rights violated by wearing a mask. I would not be surprised if guns get pulled on people.

I think most parents in this situation are going to do the best they can, but it only takes a few assholes to create a disaster. This is not going to go well. Fuck.

I just took a look at the SCOTUS opinion in the Oklahoma case, and it was shocking — Gorsuch wrote the 5-4 opinion as an honest exercise in textual analysis (i.e., the Creek reservation still exists because Congress never explicitly did away with it and only Congress has the power to tear up treaties with native Americans).

This upends a considerable amount of OK history, including the stories I learned in grade school that the ending of those reservations was part of OK becoming a state.

The best part of that was Roberts’ dissent, where his irritation at the apostasy by Gorsuch drips from every page.

Another 60k day. That was pretty much expected.

What I’m not liking is that deaths are definitely a solid bump up this week over the previous week’s pattern. Tues/Wed I figured could just be catch-up reporting from the holiday weekend, but today’s is over 900, and that puts us back to where things were at the end of May.

There’s been a lot of chatter about the lag between cases reported and deaths reported. Back at the beginning of all this, there was some thought that you’d have a week lag, which turned into conventional wisdom that it’s a two-week lag. Lately I’ve been hearing relatively serious people saying that it’s three, or four, or six (!?!) week lag between cases and deaths.

Let’s hope that it’s not four+. At two weeks lag, the current case rate would (in a very simple analysis) sustain about 1100 deaths a day. At three weeks lag it would be 1500ish, and at 4 or more it’s likely to be touching 2k.

From Stanley Kurtz at NRO:

“…Biden now plans to use Cory Booker’s strategy for attacking suburban zoning. AFFH works by holding HUD’s Community Development Block Grants hostage to federal-planning demands. Suburbs won’t be able to get the millions of dollars they’re used to in HUD grants unless they eliminate single-family zoning and densify their business districts. AFFH also forces HUD-grant recipients to sign pledges to “affirmatively further fair housing.” Those pledges could get suburbs sued by civil-rights groups, or by the feds, if they don’t get rid of single-family zoning. The only defense suburbs have against this two-pronged attack is to refuse HUD grants. True, that will effectively redistribute huge amounts of suburban money to cities, but if they give up their HUD grants at least the suburbs will be free of federal control.”

Well, let’s see. It’s 10-14 days from exposure to the onset of symptoms, according to what people have been saying. It’s also been said that people on respirators can survive for weeks before dying, which would easily put the lag into the 4- or 5-week range.

Holy crap, lag of 4-5 weeks? I’d be looking for a new Internet Service Provider in a heartbeat.

re: #44 Hecuba’s daughter

I heard a report yesterday, I think, likely on NPR — in which a poll was taken and 80% (or something like that) of the American public knew the slogan meant “restructure” not “eliminate.” And the other 20% are probably lost forever.

Instead of the waiting room, patients have to stand out on the sidewalk until they’re ready for me to come in. A questionnaire over the phone the day before, and again when I came in, and they took my temperature. The dentist and hygienist wore mask and plastic face shield, and they had to use hand tools for stuff that’s usually a machine (so as to prevent spray).

Solid point, but there are real issues to deal with there. E.g., housing in CA is a very complicated mess.

And I was kind of hoping the myopic thinking of some on the left trying to fix a laundry list of problems by stopping actual houses from being built in favor of cramming everyone into high density apartments and condos would have been finally shit-canned in the pile of good intended but still horrible ideas.

COVID-19 should have done this if nothing else, not to mention the obvious problem that at some point only rich people and corporations will own homes and the rest of us will be stuck paying other peoples mortgages via rent with no ROI (beyond someone else’s roof over our head) until we die, and with Social Security and retirement funding dwindling this is a big problem.

I think some outside the box thinking is required on this. Not a 50 year old left-wing wish list meant to fix racism and the environment without thought of unintended consequences.

Done, baked in an extra ~50k deaths, and a polio like complications of our time for who knows how many because we can’t get our shit together. I hate FB. Our celebration of ignorance (we more than KNOW better by now) has come home to roost.

You could probably start as high as $20,000 for a single individual if you stopped having to pay all the other programs. Additional for a spouse and kids (I would prefer a limit of 2 kids but the religious nutbars would shriek) .

File a tax return showing what you did make and get a “refund ” in the amount you are short of the cutoff. Choose one, quarterly or monthly payments.

Along the same line:
Texas GOP sues Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner over canceled in-person convention

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Harris County, argues that the gathering is protected under both the Texas and U.S. Constitutions and should be allowed to continue as planned.

“Mayor Turner may not treat the [Republican Party of Texas] convention differently from that of the recent public protests that the Mayor supported,” reads the petition, which also lists Houston First and the city of Houston as defendants. “Political viewpoint cannot be the basis for unequal treatment.”

Look on the brightside: Maybe enough of these lemmings will die before the election to turn Texas blue. The potential for a massive fallout event is certainly there. The infected delegates will spread out to literally every corner of the state, back to places where most of them are prominent citizens. They will then have endless opportunities to spread the virus at their proudly maskless bars, churches, shooting ranges, franchise steak houses, MLM rallies, and indoor campaign events.

FFVCS drops to 40.1 percent approval rating in 538 aggregate. This is its lowest level since February 7, 2019 and puts it in GHWB and Carter territory. Remind you that GWB dipped down to 43.8 in mid-August 2004 before rallying back to win re-election.

But we are getting very close to a point of no return for the Orange Anus. I have read where its advisors are terrified of it dropping below 40. Please let this happen and continue to sink.

For comparison at this stage in the presidency:

FFVCS 40.1
Obama 47.1
GWB 46.7
Clinton 53.8
GHWB 36.7
Reagan 53.7
Carter 31.7
Nixon 57.5
