The Jacob Collier Band, Feat. Jacob Collier and Jacob Collier, With Jacob Collier: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

YouTube

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

July 9, 2020 | Colin Marshall — Polymath musician Jacob Collier has been championing this style of one-man-band music videos since 2012, singing every note and playing every instrument. His cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”earned him a devout YouTube following at the age of 19, and he hasn’t slowed down since. The London wunderkind owns four Grammy Awards already, including two at the age of 22 in 2017, and his evolution as a bandleader has been evident in his live performances ( like when he came to NPR for a Tiny Desk concert last year). Now 25, and with nearly a decade of experience producing every aspect of his own music from his home, Collier is uniquely positioned to crank out his best work from quarantine. In this video, each of the four parts was recorded in a single take. Pay close attention ; it’s easy to get tripped up inside Jacob’s head as he arranges this Rubik’s Cube of a video production, which feels both like a magic trick and a no-strings-attached bedroom session.

Since the pandemic hit hard in March, Collier has been hustling in his Internet-famous room. He’s played duets over Instagram Live with the likes of Chris Martin, JoJo and Daniel Caesar, recorded a song in his bathroom, and he’s in the middle of releasing his ambitious four-volume record, Djesse. The last song in this video is the premiere of his new single “He Won’t Hold You,” which will appear on Vol. 3, due out later this year.

It’s funny how a few years down the road, we kind of take for granted Jacob’s supernatural abilities - to the point where he’s performing as a band, doing four parts in single takes to preserve the feel of a Tiny Desk concert.

He continues to astound.

Stand Up (Official Video) – Tom Morello x Shea Diamond x Dan Reynolds x The Bloody Beetroots

[Shea Diamond:]
Stand up
‘Cause you are standing for nothing
Just shut up
‘Cause your words mean nothing

[Dan Reynolds:]
Everyone is at each other’s throats
Everyone thinking that they know things that they don’t know
Everyone painting the third coat on the wall of belief
Send me relief

When I call the police will they just kill me?
Will they just kill you?
When I call the police will they just protect me cause I’m white skinned too?

Every time you talk the system knows
Everywhere you walk the cameras go
Everything I say you already know
Everything in state is about to blow
Way back before Jim Crow

When I call the police will they just kill me?
Will they just kill you?
When I call the police will they just protect me cause I’m white skinned too?

[Shea Diamond:]
Stand up
‘Cause you are standing for nothing
Just shut up
‘Cause your words mean nothing

Everybody stares like I’m just my gender
But I’m a living soul with my own agendo
Tell me how you are the priest and the prosecution
Tell me how you have a God who loves executions

Corruption in the blue line ripples out
Eruption in the streets bring the few and proud
Attention when the knees fall to the ground
Silently loud

When I call the police will they just kill me?
Will they just kill you?
When you call the police would they just protect you cause you’re white skinned too?

[Dan Reynolds:]
Every day that passes I’m angrier
Every time the cops get a hall pass - build another barrier
Now it’s stereotypical
No I’m not cynical
Political hypocritical

Corruption in the blue line ripples out
Eruption in the streets bring the few and proud
Attention when the knees fall to the ground
Silently loud

[Shea Diamond:]
Stand up
‘Cause you are standing for nothing
Just shut up
‘Cause your words mean nothing

If you walked a mile in my shoes
You’d probably take ‘em off wouldn’t you?
If you had to live in my truth
You’d probably tell a lie wouldn’t you?

[Dan Reynolds:]
When I call the police will they just kill me?
Will they just kill you?

[Shea Diamond:]
Stand up
‘Cause you stand for nothing
Nothing
You stand for nothing
Stand up
‘Cause you stand for nothing

‘Cause your words mean nothing
Stand up

We are doing the same thing in my office. Thankfully, we can use VPN to work from home, though several of us must come in 2 or 3 days per week. Here in our part of North Carolina, I don’t see our usual office of 60 people getting back to a “regular” schedule before sometime in 2021. Even with just 10-15 people in the office at one time, you just have to be so extra careful.

At least the Walmart here is vigorously enforcing a mask rule now. Two weeks ago I doubt 1 in 10 customers was wearing face covering. But we have had a huge surge in cases since then, and you can tell that even in FFVCS country, the people are scared.

The whole point of this idiotic seating arrangement was to encourage “synergy,” which in the case of my job was stupid, because pretty much everyone I work with is not seated in my building. But the execs had this idea that people would collaborate more if forced into big rooms with not much space between seats. As a result they were closing down small sites and telling people to either find different jobs or move. All that came to a screeching halt about Friday, March 13, when it became incredibly clear that something very bad was happening. To their credit, the execs have adjusted remarkably well and have, for an evil too big to fail financial institution, generally treated employees fairly well.

That said, if we don’t get a vaccine and if things don’t improve, the chances of me going back to the office any time soon are virtually zero as I have diabetes. It’s too much of a risk.

It’s been a very bad day for Texas:

worldometers.info

You may need to click on Yesterday to get todays’s numbers.

The Austin Convention Center is being converted into a COVID treatment center, ready by July 20th. The ICUs around the state are filling up fast.

City of Austin school teachers are begging the School District not to open up the schools too soon, but tens of thousands of kids don’t have the computers they need to take advantage of remote learning.

In addition, thousands and thousands of parents can’t get back to work if their kids are at home and they need to home school them.

The system has broken, the center cannot hold.

We are in new ground, and no one knows what to do to fix the problem.

It’s an educational, economic, human, and social apocalypse, and we are completely helpless. The Federal Government has checked out, denying any responsibility to try to fix things.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but a Debbie Downer may be an optimist at this point.

We may be well and truly fucked at this point in time.

Night all, try to sleep well.

Here’s an update ahead of the second round of the Polish Presidential election coming this weekend.

This is a screen grab from state TV, controlled by the ruling “Law and Justice” (PiS) party.

The translation:

“Will Trzaskowski meet Jewish demands?”

It refers to Rafał Trzaskowski, the center right mayor of Warsaw, running against Andrzej Duda, the current president and a member of PiS.

Please note the government is not accusing Trzaskowski of being a tool of international Jewry…they are merely asking questions!

Total population of Poland: 38,383,000
Total Jewish population of Poland: 4,500

I guess nothing gets Poles to the polls like some old fashioned antisemitism!

My good friend in Warsaw has now resigned herself to a PiS victory.

Why is it that a group of former GOP consultants are making a more clear, concise compelling case against GOP Senators than the case being made by Democratic Senators against same Senators?

Another point is that any sitting Democrat gets a full force immediate counterattack routed through the media in the name of “fairness” when they go after the GOP. The Dems are divisive, uncivil, radical, ignoring America’s real problems, and all the rest of the shit that totally obscures the original message. The former GOP consultants don’t get that.

We have a whole host of data regarding the epidemic in conservative states wilfully ignoring the data, and passing that ignorance on to conservative voters.

If they don’t understand it, they’re stupid.
If they ignore it, they’re evil.

Back in more naive times, when state Lottery stuff was more rare, California had a TV show for lottery winners to determine their jackpot prizes. It ran for many years, The Big Spin. Other states then came up with their own TV “gameshows”, though many of them were pretty lame.

Early host Chuck Woolery, before he revealed himself to be an ass:

The Big Spin 11/4/85 Part 1 of 3

I miss The Big Spin. But I guess it was no longer feasible. When MegaMillions and then PowerBall came along they sucked up a lot of lottery-energy.

Scratchers are still the thing - they have increased in popularity. But now in California the scratchers just reveal the million dollar + winnings instead of inviting the winners to a game show.

Protests have been going on in Serbia since before the outbreak over the tightening grip by the government there on the free press and opposition parties.

The misnamed Serbian Progressive Party (a break from the far-right Serbian Radical Party) is in power there.

Protests from a coalition of Serbian wingnuts and more left-leaning protestors have been turning violent, with Serbian police using truncheons and tear gas on protestors.

From the right wing protestors:

At his press conference on July 8, [Prime Minister] Vucic attributed the previous night’s violence to right-wing groups and “foreign secret services,” without giving details.

He also said their shouts and chants in front of parliament suggested they were motivated by conspiracy theories unrelated to the public-health crisis.

“These people weren’t talking about coronavirus, they were talking about betrayal of some sort, migrants, the 5G network, and a flat Earth,” Vucic said. “And these people weren’t there for the first time, it’s just that there was a higher degree of aggression.”

The nostalgic thing, when watching that early The Big Spin show, is that winning $2M meant you could afford to buy a decent house back then for that amount (remember federal taxes apply, which in those days I think was 45% top bracket, before Reagan succeeded in lowering it for his friends.)

So $1M after taxes could buy you a house in California and have enough left over to draw interest to pay the annual costs of owning.

Can’t do that today.

67
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jul 10, 2020 • 3:00:25am

In the UK the tax situation is a bit different — the Government takes 10% of the stake for gambling like the National Lottery, horse racing and other betting shop offerings but in exchange any winnings are not taxed as income so if you win you get the entire sum. The Chancellor who brought in this scheme was himself known to enjoy gambling.

Any interest from the lump sums won is taxable income but the sums themselves aren’t taxable since, it is argued you paid the tax when you gambled.

There’s no local income taxes in the UK — there are local authority rates for home owners and renters but that’s not income-based taxation. All taxation monies received (VAT, Vehicle Fuel Duty, stamp duty for house purchases, income tax, capital gains tax etc.) go into the Chancellor’s Big Pot ‘O Money and that pays for the Government’s expenditures, there’s nothing ring-fenced or paid for by locally voted bonds and the like.

Which Mrs. Fish and I have been doing a huge amount of, and more importantly, we have begun refusing patronage to stores that do not require their employees to wear masks. It sounds stupid, I know, but there is a grocery store near us that doesn’t - and after one trip there together, we both agreed we were too nervous about that insanity to continue going there. I know it’s probably a big draw for the locals, though, given how I live in the most brain-dead part of my state.

As an expat, one gets homesick on holidays like 4th of July, but this year, almost nothing. Only a handful of Germans make an ideological/political-identity issue out of masks, and people are still wearing them, grudgingly at times but fully aware that it is the socially responsible thing to do.

Besides the obvious that people don’t find themselves stuffed in a small room with 20+ other people for hours at a time, there’s the other reality: Going to store is a totally voluntary experience. If I don’t want to go to Home Depot or Walmart, I don’t have to and the government cannot force me to do so. By contrast, the government of Florida is saying kids and parents have no say, they will be in school or else they’ll face consequences up to fines and possible jail time.

For a party that always insists they’re big on the rights of individuals and public safety, they sure seem eager to toss both out in loyalty to their Dear Leader.

Targetpractice  Jul 10, 2020 • 5:12:27am

If virtual learning has failed, it’s largely because too much of the country lacks access to high speed internet that allows school systems to provide live learning sessions. In a saner nation, the WH might put forward an infrastructure bill in the vein of the Rural Electrification Act to get the rest of the country up to speed with “elites” on the coasts. But instead, we get a political party that uses their own negligence towards their constituents to argue that cramming them into poorly-funded schools is the “only” means of providing education.

Seeing ads on YouTube that is a recording of “911 can’t answer the phone right now because no one is here” while showing empty offices, stuff burning, and big text about “defund the police”. Blatant fear-mongering and no attempt (as usual) to address the issue.

Plus below is what I see posted on Facebook with the sole comment of “truth”. A Gish Gallop of strawmen, and also not intended for any sort of honest or civil discussion of points. Fear-mongering and/or trolling value only.*

* - From someone who has stated that Trump is an asshole, but will vote for him anyways since it means more conservative judges. I don’t believe he’s really a Republican, but more of a quasi-libertarian “FU, I have mine”, “no taxes”, “do nothing to inconvenience me” type. Also telling was that he was stopped and questioned by police the other day while walking in his neighborhood. (I guess someone there thought he looked suspicious.) He stated it was “jarring”, but apparently made no further connections.

If a Republican doesn’t like guns, his friends question his “patriotism” and harass him until he tells them he’s cool with guns. Then has to awkwardly act as if he knows what he’s talking about when they brag about their “tacticool” penis extensions.

If a Republican is a vegetarian, then his friends keep shoving meat in his face and accusing him of being a “commie” until he relents and takes a bite. After that, he forces himself to eat a bit of whatever meat is served up at the social functions he attends so they assume they’ve “cured” him.

If a Republican is homosexual, he lives either a closeted life of fear or a lonely life of isolation because everybody around him thinks God is gonna strike him down for “living in sin.” His relatives constantly pester him to act “normal” by finding some woman he doesn’t love and have some kids.

If a Republican is down-and-out, then he feels he’s “owed” government support because he “earned it” while sneering at minorities who receive such as “moochers” and “welfare queens.” Whenever he’s asked why he doesn’t have a job, he screams about how “illegals” have “taken all the jobs,” when the reality is he won’t take jobs he feels “beneath him” and the jobs he wants all required education/experience he lacks.

If a Republican doesn’t like a talk show, he sends death threats and abusive messages to the host until they tearfully quit. If that fails, he joins a “Family Association” which uses threats of having “millions of members” to force the show off the air with threats of boycotts.

If a Republican is a non-believer, everybody he knows screams that he’s going to Hell unless he “gets right with God” because only “liberals” and “atheists” refuse to go to church. He gets regular visits from them or from the local parish to help him “see the error of his ways.”

If a Republican decides he needs healthcare, he goes to the ER without insurance, takes advantage of the various discounts/aid available, then bitches about all the “illegals” he saw there who are sponging off the system. He’ll sooner spend money for doctor’s visits on buying that new “deer rifle” and then pleading poverty the moment he’s in the ICU for kidney failure.

God, what a joke.

Woolery only hosted The Big Spin for a few shows at the beginning. But watching the videos, I notice how the women (middle-age and older) look up at him with admiration (lust?)

Chuck had a good gig going in TV-land.

There is a show up here called something like The Search for Canadian Game Shows, a documentary series (it’s fascinating), and they did a piece on Wheel of Fortune.

Wollery and his Vanna (whose name escapes me) were like 5 years into Wheel and both wanted a raise. Merv Griffin said no. After some fuckery on Wollery and his Vanna’s part they got shit canned. Pat was a weatherman somewhere and Merv saw him and offered him the job.

Vanna wanted to be a contestant on Wheel (she had already been a contestant on The Price is Right) and wound up through a friend being offered an audition for the job she now has. She didn’t do well but got the job anyway. She had moved to LA like a month before getting that job. This was exactly what she wanted (like a Price gal who shows off the prizes). She didn’t want to be an actress, just this, a game show cutie.

Oh and a large number of US game show hosts are Canadian. Howie Mandel, Monty, Trebek, so so many.

And then here comes Trump with his morning tweet dump of derp. Same as always, just more of it because he’s shook that he’s got to pay his lawyers even more to protect him from having the truth come out about his tax scams and fraud and other assorted criminal acts.

He’s going off about mail in balloting, suppressing voter turnout, and violating Twitter TOS.

Just once, I’d like to wake up and not spot Trump’s tweets - it’s not like I’m following him either.

This is what Trump does. He ignores the growing death toll and failure to contain covid19, and spews bulkshit nonstop.

The economy is in shambles and he doesn’t have a plan to do anything about it. Heck, the GOP is running ads trying to claim that Biden would mess things up. That doesn’t jibe with reality given that Trump is the mother of all fuckups who destroyed the economy with his failed covid19 response, and you can’t restart the economy without getting covid19 under control, and the GOP doesn’t care how many die from covid19 or are sickened or hospitalized.

Now, this pandemic is ravaging FL, TX, AZ, and other GOP strongholds, and they’re realizing all their shitposting about NY and NJ was premature as their own states suffer even more horrifically. In fact, no other states should have had to experience the NY/NJ onslaught because they should have learned to mask up, social distance, and make it mandatory - to stop the spread of transmission.

Instead, these know nothing fucknuts decided to reopen faster and sooner than health experts said was prudent, and the predictable result is that we’re seeing massive spread and faster spread and more cases in these states are being reported than even at the height of the NY/NJ outbreaks.

Deaths will follow. They usually do. Even if the death toll isn’t nearly as high as in NY/NJ, it was fucking preventable. All of it.

Herd immunity: get 50% or more (or more like 70-80% infected and this serves as protection).

That means that instead of the fraction of the population that has already been exposed, which is well under 10% of the nation’s population, we’d have to see 5-7 times the number of deaths? We’d be talking about half a million deaths from a disease that could be stopped if everyone social distanced and masked up.

That’s the idiocy right there. Sweden tried the herd approach and failed. UK too.

the issue of herd immunity is not researched, it is not clear whether infection gives permanent immunity, not to mention the other long-term effects. but heck, just get it over with and get back to work!!!

Another example of evil versus stupid.

Herd immunity is not achieved through transmission of disease. The term is hijacked and the serial numbers filed off by evil eugenicists. Herd immunity is a term to explain how vaccination programmes work.

If herd immunity was achieved through disease, then plague, smallpox, poliomyelitis, measles, chickenpox, &c would have been eradicated long ago (particularly measles with its Rnaught of 11 or so).

They are deliberately spreading propaganda to people who are susceptible to it.

It is an evil form of religious apologetics.

A person cannot be faulted for falling victim to a concerted propaganda campaign. However, when presented with truthful information (herd immunity cannot be achieved through natural spread of a disease) and they cannot accept it or will not accept it, they fall in the category of stupid.

It is what it is.

The Bible speaks of a great battle between good and evil in The Apocalypse (Revelation). That book is often thought of as allegory. It seems somewhat ironic that folks such as scientists, doctors, researchers, atheists, and other such people who deal in reason (generally) would be the ones “on the side of light.”

re: #124 lawhawk

The UK government considered going for herd immunity very early on in this pandemic but instead went into quite a hard lockdown in the middle of March on the advice of the science community who laid out the modelling numbers which suggested a million dead if things were left to run their course. The result, we’re through our peak (about 45,000 dead confirmed with COVID-19, about 60,000 excess deaths over the average death rate) without ever overloading our hospitals although it was close and we seriously stressed our healthcare staff in the doing.

The numbers of new cases in the UK is now in the low hundreds per day, the point at which contact tracing might work. We’re opening up slowly and ready to lock down again if needed but mostly on a local basis — the city of Leicester was locked down a couple of days ago after a sudden rise in cases, a local outbreak on the Scottish borders was hammered down and seems to be under control with all contacts in that outbreak traced.

Scotland’s numbers for the day are out, 18 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed which is a worrying rise but they’re not clustered, apparently. No new deaths but more people are in hospital as, I think, their cases got worse with more of them in intensive care. The national daily report will come out later with England’s new cases and deaths being the major part of of those numbers.

re: #115 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Susan Stafford was the original co-host of Wheel Of Fortune with Chucky. Yes, both of them wanted a raise and Merv said NO. Pat Sajak was the weatherman on the NBC station in Los Angeles. Merv hired him because he was willing to work for less money. A dear friend of mine worked a long time for Merv and then was hired by King World when Merv sold his TV properties. Oh the stories she told about how depraved Merv Griffin was…

No, but it certainly comes out looking that way: and also that that age demographic appears to be their target audience.

Not that Trump/the GOP would be likely to run anything other than crude fearmongering in any case, but it’s pretty telling that even this far out from the election, their main pitch is reduced to hysterical blathering about the Great Red Boogeyman. Shoot it in B&W and add a few hammer-and-sickles and it would look like it was lifted intact from some 50s-era John Birch screed…..

Levin fits in the “evil” category. Most politicians release their taxes, both Republican and Democratic.

Supreme Court justices (and for that matter federal judges) have their records at least nominally scrutinised before they are confirmed.

As for the dipshit in the thread saying everyone who is a millionaire in Congress should be audited (presumably because that’s shady somehow), I imagine if you gave me a senator or representative’s pay for ten years I could come pretty close to being a millionaire as well, without having to do anything like invest in the stock market. Saving money is all that would require.

The herd immunity option was, I understand, based on the clear scientific evidence that this disease was prolific i.e. it was transmitted easily, and there was no vaccine or drug treatment that would stop it spreading. This is still true — all that lockdowns do is to cut the population up into very small “herds” to temporarily prevent cross-infection.

The other prophylactic treatment absent a working vaccine is tracing of sufferers and their contacts and quarantine, enforced “herd immunity” of very small clusters of people who will almost certainly catch the disease but hopefully not pass it on to others while they are infectious. This takes time to set up and requires a population willing to accept the loss of freedom and privacy needed to make it work or at worst have it imposed on them by force majeure. The US has a harder row to hoe in that situation because of their unassailable Holy Constitution.

Coronavirus update: How the Catholic Church won $1.4B in virus aid; Starbucks to require masks

More at the link.

The U.S. Roman Catholic Church used a special and unprecedented exemption from federal rules to amass at least $1.4 billion in taxpayer-backed coronavirus aid, with many millions going to dioceses that have paid huge settlements or sought bankruptcy protection because of clergy sexual abuse cover-ups.

The church’s haul may have reached — or even exceeded — $3.5 billion, making a global religious institution with more than a billion followers among the biggest winners in the U.S. government’s pandemic relief efforts, an Associated Press analysis of federal data released this week found.

Except no serious epidemiologist suggested “well, let’s just let it spread because we have no vaccine or treatment.” That was all conservative politicians in Sweden, the UK, and the USA.

Since the concept of Rnaught was developed in the Thirties to explain malaria, the goal has always been to get Rnaught below 1 with any disease. It has never been “spread it far and wide.”

Before there was a vaccine for measles, the treatment was quarantine. Even today quarantine is the first-line suggestion.

With my adult-onset cases of scarlet fever (2008), chickenpox (1993), and mumps (2012), quarantine was the order each time for those as well. No doctor said “go forth and spread” and those diseases are a lot less dangerous.

It’s likely that as many as half a million Americans are going to die from this disease over the next 12 months or so, maybe fifty million will be infected. Treating the US population like the Chinese government treated their population is logistically impossible because of the Holy Writ of the US Constitution. Any attempt to impose policed hard lockdowns in cities, barriers to entry or exit of hot-spots, internal passporting, arrests of people flouting hygiene laws, all those would be negated by appeal to the courts who must rule within the Constitution even though many will die because of it. That’s blind religious worship of an ancient document, not sense or reasonableness in times of pandemic.

As of today, China with a population four times that of the US has had 4600 recorded deaths, the US has had 135,000 deaths.

Yeah: dKos had a piece on that state yesterday(?): politics there are pretty idiosyncratic, and it’s still a longshot (and still only 3 EVs), but it’s not quite the R “gimme” it might have been. There is actually a vague chance of unseating Sen. Dan Sullivan, or their (lone) Rep. Don Young (“Dean” of the House: he is the last serving Congressperson elected in the Nixon Administration). But it’s a telling commentary on things in 2020 that even a nominally deep-red state like AK could even be remotely considered “in play”.

The largest school district in the state (Omaha Public Schools) held a virtual town hall to discuss its plan with parents for reopening schools.

The plan is to have students with names A-K attend two days a week, and L-Z the other two, with the groups alternating Wednesdays.

Students would be required to wear masks on school buses and sanitise hands on entering the school.

Two high schools have too many students, so they will just go with the usual schedule (everybody goes every day).

They hope coronavirus will slow its spread so the schools can all return to five days a week.

They also told parents they would have to live with Covid-19 outbreaks in the schools, because “we’re all in this together.”

I’m really happy for the parents of my school district that we voted out the Republicans from our school board. They won’t have to sacrifice their children on the altar of conservatism.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency is set to launch a six-week “Citizens Academy” course on immigration enforcement, which will include training for citizens on how to arrest undocumented immigrants.

A letter published online by The St. Louis Inter-Faith Committee on Latin America (IFCLA) appears to show ICE Chicago Field Office Director Robert Guadian inviting shareholders to participate in the course, which includes six days of training over a six-week period starting in September.

“You have been identified as a valued member of the community who may have interest in participating in the inaugural class of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Chicago Citizens Academy,” the letter states.

In PA Governor Wolf will decide of the schools open. Personally I hope they do not. COVID-19 spreads to easily and too fast. NJ used its state run NJTV to provide classes over the air for all of its state school age children. I also know that WHYY also provided educational programing as well as some online education. DT thinks that he cam make the schools open but it is each individual state that decides what the state curriculum and how many days a school year is. In PA Governor Wolf will decide of the schools open. Personally I hope they do not. COVID-19 spreads to easily and too fast. NJ used its state run NJTV to provide classes over the air for all of its state school age children. I also know that WHYY also provided educational programing as well as some online education.I believe that is the route we should take in this time of COVID-19.

Since we are limited on Internet service here, particularly rural students, the plan here when schools closed was a combination of distance learning provided by Scottsbluff schools combined with work packages sent to public libraries for students to pick up and drop off.

With Scottsbluff going full bore to open on time, distance learning they were providing may halt (that hasn’t been decided yet). Our own town is looking into restarting one-room schooling (at least for the younger children) as we don’t have many children (about twenty total), since no one in town has the disease.

The one-room school here closed at the end of the 2005 school year, so it’s still available for use.

That and you could run a dead cat as a Republican in Wyoming and it would get elected in a landslide. Governor Gordon has nothing to fear from Donald Trump, except a primary challenger.

He was elected to his first term in 2018. The Wyoming governor’s office has a two-term limit, so he can run again in 2022. He took all counties in Wyoming except two rural counties, which went to Democratic state rep Mary Throne, defeating her by +40 statewide.

He doesn’t need Trump.

I had my follow-up CAT scan on Wednesday to check my brain out and see what that aneurysm has been up to (if anything). I got a call from the doctor yesterday saying everything is fine and I don’t need to do anything between now and the follow-up visit in August where all my questions will be answered, etc. After a month, I feel fantastic. Since I can’t drink alcohol, my sleep has been better than any time in memory. Physically, I think I’m 95%. Thanks again to my fellow lizard peeps for your positive vibes and thoughts.

On a Texas corona note, my grandparents’ caregiver turns 90 tomorrow, and my family is still going to have a birthday gathering for her tomorrow. 10,000+ new cases a day, and they think it’s a great idea for people over the age of 70 to gather. I’ve already had my hospital quota for the next two decades, so it’s a pass for me.

Turnout in the 2018 election was what one can only dream of Democratic voters in Wyoming.

About 3/4 of the eligible residents are registered, and about half turned out to vote.

By comparison in Nebraska, Governor Ameritrade (Pete Ricketts) only won by +18 for a second term over state senator Bob Krist. Of ninety-three counties, Bob Krist took the two most-populous (Douglas, seat Omaha; Lancaster, seat Lincoln), and Pete Ricketts took the other ninety-one.

Sam Baker: “Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is not the revolutionary that conservative activists want him to be. He moves slower than they want, sides with liberals more than they want, and trims his sails in ways they find maddening. But he is still deeply and unmistakably conservative, pulling the law to the right -- at his own pace and in his own image.”

“Roberts is not turning into a liberal. The law either stays put or moves to the right almost every time he is in the majority, even when it’s a majority with the more liberal justices.”

“…Roberts’ position as the court’s only real potential swing vote gives him the power to dictate not just bottom-line outcomes, but also how the court gets there.

Jesus, we’ve had more tornado warnings in the last six months here than most of my life, and I moved back to this area when I was 10, over four decades ago.

There was one in 1989 that touched down in Philly, near the south of end of Center City by the river. It damaged a parking garage, travelled under the Ben Franklin Bridge and then petered out in Camden.

That is literally the only one I can remember. Then, two warnings in the last six months. The last one we had, the sky turned green and there was a low rumble like a subway or train emanating all around us. Not an expert, but I’m guessing we were this close to having one form.

I wonder if there’s any chance Trump would have Barr try to cook up some BS justification to arrest Obama and Hilary in the run-up to the election?

You know he thinks seeing those two perp walked would boost his re-election chances.

That would start a revolution. They’re would be riots in every town across America.

There was speculation about that for a couple years (even outside the Qult). I’m not sure he could cook up anything in this short of time, except the bogus announcement of an investigation. The investigation Barr set up using a Missouri federal attorney into the origins of the Russia investigation has spent months of our tax money and revealed zero about a nefarious plan to kneecap Trump before the election (because there was no nefarious plan).

I’m pretty there is a “chance” this scenario has been discussed by someone in the Executive Branch. Personally, I think the only acceptable number of this “chance” being true is FUCKING ZERO!!!!, but remember who we are talking about.

The only thing arresting Obama and Hillary would accomplish, IMO, would be to insure (with - again IMO - a 99+% probability) that Donald Trump would have to resign and/or flee the country - permanently - as soon as the election returns start to trickle in. If not well before.

A fictionalized character in Hollywood Wives , the trash novel by Jackie Collins, was based on Merv. I would LOVE to know the real stuff. Deep gossip has a lot to say about Merv.

Deep gossip also points out that Seacrest is the new Merv. And not just because his broadcast empire is so much like Merv’s. *wink*

Hey, I like trashy Romance novels. They even have quite the fanbase on the Web.

smartbitchestrashybooks.com

As for Ms. Collins’s book, it is generally regarded as a worldwide bestseller, and the television adaptation of it as a miniseries one of the highest rated in the Eighties.

I hope one of the trashy Romances I edited is turned into such a hit. I’ll be modestly well-off.

Honestly? I think it was COVID. Just not the typical breathing related kind. I went to Florida mid December, two weeks later I was in the ER with severe gastrointestinal problems (severe abdominal pain, extreme diarrhea, weakness).

They thought it might have been a norovirus but they didn’t know. I was so sick I literally ate rice for two months. I couldn’t stand the thought of anything else.

The IRS looking into the TP groups getting exempt status was not the same as Trump insisting that all universities be investigated and lose exempt status.

For starters, the IRS didn’t just look at TP groups. The GOPers in Congress wanted to know only if the TP groups were being investigated. IRS said they were. Turns out they were, along with progressive groups too. The GOP framed it as a witch hunt on right wing groups.

Congress punted when the IRS insisted they clarify the law. So the IRS is left to muddle through. These kinds of groups proliferated in wake of CU decision.

This is not merely down to the fact that Poles can REALLY see Russia from their house. It’s also because the party’s supreme leader Jarosław Kaczyński lost his twin brother Lech Kaczyński (former mayor of Warsaw and President) in the Smolensk air disaster in 2010. - the IRS does almost everything by sampling. this was too.
- that’s why the audit rate is so low. though they do sub-stratify before the select high income, low income, compliance discrepancies, sch C etc.
- even as to how much time and effort will go into each specific application request - like the exempt app 1023’s.
- otherwise nothing would ever get done.

it’s why so many people can claim they ‘got away with it’ and they are ‘smarter than the irs’ etc

A substantial number of congressmen (and state/city level officials) made big money off fortuitously-timed real estate investments near where the highways would shortly be announced as planned. This particular grift has a long, LONG history going to back to routing the transcontinental railroad.

The belief that Lech Kaczyński (along with so many other members of the Polish government at the time) was the victim of an assassination ordered by Putin is pretty widespread in Poland. One conspiracy theory going around (and might still be for all I know) is that the Smolensk disaster was a decapitation strike and that the Russians were planning on invading Poland but Putin got cold feet at the last minute.

There were actually a lot of good, watchable movies that came out in 1988:

Die Hard
My Neighbor Totoro
Grave of the Fireflies (ok, you can only watch it once)
Rain Man
Bull Durham

But I’m going to go with Akira as my favorite.

I showed “Grave of the Fireflies” to a freshmen seminar group once and one student was so overwhelmed that she didn’t stop crying for ten minutes after the movie was over.

Virtual learning is doomed to fail except for the affluent in non-lab high school and college level classes. You need more than high speed internet; each child needs their own computer and their own room; you need someone to supervise to make sure that the students are working and not playing with their legos. Also, children need to interact in person with others of their age. Too many homes don’t have the luxury of providing a quiet place for students to work and study.

Definitely.

For the time being, the film industry is going through a remake/reboot/franchise cycle. Not to say there aren’t original films out there (and certainly not to say some of the current crop of superhero action films are all bad….quite a few of them are actually very good films) but they’re not always easy to find.

Eh, things like this come and go in cycles. In the 1930s, it was musicals. In the 1960s and ’70s, antihero films were all the rage. Eventually, we’ll get back to a cycle where we start seeing more original films in cinemas.

Right now I’m rereading Richard Evans 3rd Reich history and I’m just at the point where the Big Businesses decide they can get behind the Nazis because there’s a profit margin, and it just drives home that capitalist institutions only fight tyranny if the cost accountant says so.

So it might not even be that they’re getting a direct kickback…they’re just wiling to game the authoritarian system of Trumpism by sucking up directly exactly as much as they’re willing to game to flawed-democratic system of regular US politics by lobbying.

For starters, the IRS didn’t just look at TP groups. The GOPers in Congress wanted to know only if the TP groups were being investigated. IRS said they were. Turns out they were, along with progressive groups too. The GOP framed it as a witch hunt on right wing groups.

They knew it would work because most people hate the IRS and are ready to believe bad things about it, and the GOP is ready to believe any scandal/CT involving a Democrat, no matter how Q-aciously far-fetched.

Notmphased in, tested, built over time, modified, adapted.

So I’m going to be That Guy and get very technically critical for a moment.

The picture we have of Donald Trump is not that he consistently pays sex workers, fee for service, to gratify his needs.

The picture we have of Donald Trump is a man who uses clout and power over women to elicit sex. While some rumors claim that he has engaged prostitutes, there are far more stories of him simply demanding sex, directly sexually assaulting, and even the famous Stormy Daniels story is a casting couch abuse of power.

I’m especially hesitant to use “whoremonger” w/r/t Trump because one of the things that gets de-emphasized when talking about Trump is how Trump hung around with guys that used modeling agencies to traffick and turn out teenagers from Eastern Europe, and that Trump Modeling was absolutely a trafficking operation that incorporated a debt trap…with the distinct possibility that the scenario was then used to push very young women into escorting.

“Trump hangs with hookers” isn’t an accurate accounting of why the man is gross and immoral. That the sex workers he’d been around were probably not doing that job under coercion…and given what was happening in New York, were probably not adults when they started be exploited…they’re not the issue.

Well, when you get over your terror, you might want to try to report the caller (and the number) to the SSA’s Fraud department
.
I will emphasize the word “try”, as this happened to me a few months back, and when I went to the SSA site (never mind calling: their phone tree is Giant Coast Redwood level) I found they had few options to report these kind of phone scams: most of their automated online options appear to be geared towards benefits denial, or other types of “fraud”.

I ended up simply sending them an email: but I later found out I might as well have saved myself the effort: these “SSA” Calls are all highly robotized, and use ever-changing lists of robo (or spoofed) numbers, and (as I read, later, elsewhere) virtually impossible to shut down.

Yeah, I thought about it, but even if they weren’t overwhelmed at this time because of all their closed offices, it would have been impossible. Anyway, I researched the number (for 30 seconds) and it appears to be spoofed. Though that’s not consistent with “call us back.” Who said thugs were clever?

You forgot a great 1981 movie. “Thief” directed by Michael Mann, starring James Caan.

With the icy synth stylings of Tangerine Dream as soundtrack!

They had six fucking months to prepare for this coming onslaught, and wasted it entirely.

Instead of having emergency beds and temporary hospitals ready to receive patients, they’re now scrambling to do what should have been done after seeing NY scramble to do the same exact thing.

This is all so fucking frustrating and avoidable.

re: #413 Welcome to The Imbleachment (dangerman)

We more or less went from schools open to virtual in the blinkmof an eye.
Notmphased in, tested, built over time, modified, adapted.
As a country we weren’t prepared or ready.

There are solutions. Working it out is gonna take time.

Them saying we tried and failed so reopen the schools is simplistic. (Besides dangerous)

When we barely tried, and have not at all failed

I’m not saying we should reopen schools, just that remote learning does not really work in many situations, especially for those who are younger and less affluent. My grand niece seemed to do well in first grade in her private expensive school (Chicago Jewish Day School) profiled in the NY Times — but not all her fellow classmates, each of whom probably had a private room and their own computer, prospered during the experience. And it’s not clear that she learned as much as would have in the traditional environment. Her school was more prepared than most, but for many students, parents have to keep a watchful eye and be able to intervene when there are technology or child meltdowns. And it is an especial challenge if the parents have to keep an eye on multiple students.

My grand niece, though, expressed her enthusiasm for continuing in zoom in the fall solely because instead of having to be outside for the school bus at 7:15 AM, she could sleep till 7:30 and be ready in time for class.

Maybe if they weren’t braindead Trump acolytes and Faux news watchers, they might have understood that there was no guarantee that the disease was going away in the spring. Many really believed that the warmer weather and more intense sunshine would destroy the virus. Our brother really believed that Abbott knew what he was doing and that Texas was handling this much better than those Democratic states out East.

Sure, there was Raiders of the Lost Ark and An American Werewolf in London
But for me…

Looking at the list, 1981 was one hell of a year for movies.

For chrissakes, he couldn’t put Hillary in prison, much less bring in an indictment.

He falied at just about everything he said on the campaign trail back in 2016 - so why should anybody give him a vote?

(and I’m royally PO’ed at folks who vote third party, and then bitch and moan about what the latest president has done or create a holier-than-thou persona. Sorry, folks, you get the politicians you have, not the politicians you want (cough-Sanders-cough) - and even if Sanders by some magical miracle would have won, do you really think he could ram his agenda through Congress? You can’t get what they’re smoking on the street, for sure….)
