The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

July 9, 2020 | Colin Marshall — Polymath musician Jacob Collier has been championing this style of one-man-band music videos since 2012, singing every note and playing every instrument. His cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”earned him a devout YouTube following at the age of 19, and he hasn’t slowed down since. The London wunderkind owns four Grammy Awards already, including two at the age of 22 in 2017, and his evolution as a bandleader has been evident in his live performances ( like when he came to NPR for a Tiny Desk concert last year). Now 25, and with nearly a decade of experience producing every aspect of his own music from his home, Collier is uniquely positioned to crank out his best work from quarantine. In this video, each of the four parts was recorded in a single take. Pay close attention ; it’s easy to get tripped up inside Jacob’s head as he arranges this Rubik’s Cube of a video production, which feels both like a magic trick and a no-strings-attached bedroom session.

Since the pandemic hit hard in March, Collier has been hustling in his Internet-famous room. He’s played duets over Instagram Live with the likes of Chris Martin, JoJo and Daniel Caesar, recorded a song in his bathroom, and he’s in the middle of releasing his ambitious four-volume record, Djesse. The last song in this video is the premiere of his new single “He Won’t Hold You,” which will appear on Vol. 3, due out later this year.

We are doing the same thing in my office. Thankfully, we can use VPN to work from home, though several of us must come in 2 or 3 days per week. Here in our part of North Carolina, I don’t see our usual office of 60 people getting back to a “regular” schedule before sometime in 2021. Even with just 10-15 people in the office at one time, you just have to be so extra careful.

At least the Walmart here is vigorously enforcing a mask rule now. Two weeks ago I doubt 1 in 10 customers was wearing face covering. But we have had a huge surge in cases since then, and you can tell that even in FFVCS country, the people are scared.

The whole point of this idiotic seating arrangement was to encourage “synergy,” which in the case of my job was stupid, because pretty much everyone I work with is not seated in my building. But the execs had this idea that people would collaborate more if forced into big rooms with not much space between seats. As a result they were closing down small sites and telling people to either find different jobs or move. All that came to a screeching halt about Friday, March 13, when it became incredibly clear that something very bad was happening. To their credit, the execs have adjusted remarkably well and have, for an evil too big to fail financial institution, generally treated employees fairly well.

That said, if we don’t get a vaccine and if things don’t improve, the chances of me going back to the office any time soon are virtually zero as I have diabetes. It’s too much of a risk.

The Austin Convention Center is being converted into a COVID treatment center, ready by July 20th. The ICUs around the state are filling up fast.

City of Austin school teachers are begging the School District not to open up the schools too soon, but tens of thousands of kids don’t have the computers they need to take advantage of remote learning.

In addition, thousands and thousands of parents can’t get back to work if their kids are at home and they need to home school them.

The system has broken, the center cannot hold.

We are in new ground, and no one knows what to do to fix the problem.

It’s an educational, economic, human, and social apocalypse, and we are completely helpless. The Federal Government has checked out, denying any responsibility to try to fix things.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but a Debbie Downer may be an optimist at this point.

We may be well and truly fucked at this point in time.

The translation:

It refers to Rafał Trzaskowski, the center right mayor of Warsaw, running against Andrzej Duda, the current president and a member of PiS.

Another point is that any sitting Democrat gets a full force immediate counterattack routed through the media in the name of “fairness” when they go after the GOP. Back in more naive times, when state Lottery stuff was more rare, California had a TV show for lottery winners to determine their jackpot prizes. It ran for many years, The Big Spin. Other states then came up with their own TV “gameshows”, though many of them were pretty lame.

Protests have been going on in Serbia since before the outbreak over the tightening grip by the government there on the free press and opposition parties.

The misnamed Serbian Progressive Party (a break from the far-right Serbian Radical Party) is in power there.

Protests from a coalition of Serbian wingnuts and more left-leaning protestors have been turning violent, with Serbian police using truncheons and tear gas on protestors.

From the right wing protestors:

At his press conference on July 8, [Prime Minister] Vucic attributed the previous night’s violence to right-wing groups and “foreign secret services,” without giving details.

He also said their shouts and chants in front of parliament suggested they were motivated by conspiracy theories unrelated to the public-health crisis.

“These people weren’t talking about coronavirus, they were talking about betrayal of some sort, migrants, the 5G network, and a flat Earth,” Vucic said. “And these people weren’t there for the first time, it’s just that there was a higher degree of aggression.”

The nostalgic thing, when watching that early The Big Spin show, is that winning $2M meant you could afford to buy a decent house back then for that amount (remember federal taxes apply, which in those days I think was 45% top bracket, before Reagan succeeded in lowering it for his friends.)

So $1M after taxes could buy you a house in California and have enough left over to draw interest to pay the annual costs of owning.

Can’t do that today.

In the UK the tax situation is a bit different — the Government takes 10% of the stake for gambling like the National Lottery, horse racing and other betting shop offerings but in exchange any winnings are not taxed as income so if you win you get the entire sum. The Chancellor who brought in this scheme was himself known to enjoy gambling.

Any interest from the lump sums won is taxable income but the sums themselves aren’t taxable since, it is argued you paid the tax when you gambled.

There’s no local income taxes in the UK — there are local authority rates for home owners and renters but that’s not income-based taxation. All taxation monies received (VAT, Vehicle Fuel Duty, stamp duty for house purchases, income tax, capital gains tax etc.) go into the Chancellor’s Big Pot ‘O Money and that pays for the Government’s expenditures, there’s nothing ring-fenced or paid for by locally voted bonds and the like.

It sounds stupid, I know, but there is a grocery store near us that doesn’t - and after one trip there together, we both agreed we were too nervous about that insanity to continue going there. I know it’s probably a big draw for the locals, though, given how I live in the most brain-dead part of my state.

But sure let’s send the kids to school and tantrum over masks. A couple of my husband’s friends thought a herd immunity party was a good idea. They are not welcome in my house. One of them owns his own company(installing and maintenance of security gates, he’s a freaking millionaire with his own plane he flies around) and I thought was fairly smart. Nope. As far as I know they didn’t throw the party, but their judgment makes me think they probably aren’t using masks or physical distancing either.

We’re suffering because of assholes. I’m out of patience.

We’ve got a favorites folder with major channels in it, but I’m still trying to figure out how to find other stuff. I don’t watch tv hardly at all because I hate the background noise all the time. I put in earplugs because the husband has it on all damned day. But at night I like to be able to chill and watch a couple of shows here and there. The fire stick thing isn’t at all like cable. Wollery and his Vanna (whose name escapes me) were like 5 years into Wheel and both wanted a raise. Merv Griffin said no. After some fuckery on Wollery and his Vanna’s part they got shit canned. Pat was a weatherman somewhere and Merv saw him and offered him the job.

Vanna wanted to be a contestant on Wheel (she had already been a contestant on The Price is Right) and wound up through a friend being offered an audition for the job she now has. She didn’t do well but got the job anyway. She had moved to LA like a month before getting that job. This was exactly what she wanted (like a Price gal who shows off the prizes). She didn’t want to be an actress, just this, a game show cutie.

Oh and a large number of US game show hosts are Canadian. Howie Mandel, Monty, Trebek, so so many.

In fact, no other states should have had to experience the NY/NJ onslaught because they should have learned to mask up, social distance, and make it mandatory - to stop the spread of transmission.

Instead, these know nothing fucknuts decided to reopen faster and sooner than health experts said was prudent, and the predictable result is that we’re seeing massive spread and faster spread and more cases in these states are being reported than even at the height of the NY/NJ outbreaks.

Herd immunity is not achieved through transmission of disease. The term is hijacked and the serial numbers filed off by evil eugenicists. Herd immunity is a term to explain how vaccination programmes work.

If herd immunity was achieved through disease, then plague, smallpox, poliomyelitis, measles, chickenpox, &c would have been eradicated long ago (particularly measles with its Rnaught of 11 or so).

They are deliberately spreading propaganda to people who are susceptible to it.

It is an evil form of religious apologetics.

A person cannot be faulted for falling victim to a concerted propaganda campaign. However, when presented with truthful information (herd immunity cannot be achieved through natural spread of a disease) and they cannot accept it or will not accept it, they fall in the category of stupid.

It is what it is.

The Bible speaks of a great battle between good and evil in The Apocalypse (Revelation). That book is often thought of as allegory. The UK government considered going for herd immunity very early on in this pandemic but instead went into quite a hard lockdown in the middle of March on the advice of the science community who laid out the modelling numbers which suggested a million dead if things were left to run their course. The result, we’re through our peak (about 45,000 dead confirmed with COVID-19, about 60,000 excess deaths over the average death rate) without ever overloading our hospitals although it was close and we seriously stressed our healthcare staff in the doing.

The numbers of new cases in the UK is now in the low hundreds per day, the point at which contact tracing might work. We’re opening up slowly and ready to lock down again if needed but mostly on a local basis — the city of Leicester was locked down a couple of days ago after a sudden rise in cases, a local outbreak on the Scottish borders was hammered down and seems to be under control with all contacts in that outbreak traced.

Scotland’s numbers for the day are out, 18 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed which is a worrying rise but they’re not clustered, apparently. No new deaths but more people are in hospital as, I think, their cases got worse with more of them in intensive care. The national daily report will come out later with England’s new cases and deaths being the major part of of those numbers.

There is a show up here called something like The Search for Canadian Game Shows, a documentary series (it’s fascinating), and they did a piece on Wheel of Fortune.

Wollery and his Vanna (whose name escapes me) were like 5 years into Wheel and both wanted a raise. Merv Griffin said no. After some fuckery on Wollery and his Vanna’s part they got shit canned. Pat was a weatherman somewhere and Merv saw him and offered him the job.

Vanna wanted to be a contestant on Wheel (she had already been a contestant on The Price is Right) and wound up through a friend being offered an audition for the job she now has. She didn’t do well but got the job anyway. She had moved to LA like a month before getting that job. This was exactly what she wanted (like a Price gal who shows off the prizes). She didn’t want to be an actress, just this, a game show cutie.

Oh and a large number of US game show hosts are Canadian. Howie Mandel, Monty, Trebek, so so many.

Except no serious epidemiologist suggested “well, let’s just let it spread because we have no vaccine or treatment.” That was all conservative politicians in Sweden, the UK, and the USA.

Since the concept of Rnaught was developed in the Thirties to explain malaria, the goal has always been to get Rnaught below 1 with any disease. It has never been “spread it far and wide.”

Before there was a vaccine for measles, the treatment was quarantine. Even today quarantine is the first-line suggestion.

With my adult-onset cases of scarlet fever (2008), chickenpox (1993), and mumps (2012), quarantine was the order each time for those as well. No doctor said “go forth and spread” and those diseases are a lot less dangerous.

It’s likely that as many as half a million Americans are going to die from this disease over the next 12 months or so, maybe fifty million will be infected. Treating the US population like the Chinese government treated their population is logistically impossible because of the Holy Writ of the US Constitution. There is actually a vague chance of unseating Sen. Dan Sullivan, or their (lone) Rep. Don Young (“Dean” of the House: he is the last serving Congressperson elected in the Nixon Administration). Two high schools have too many students, so they will just go with the usual schedule (everybody goes every day).

They hope coronavirus will slow its spread so the schools can all return to five days a week.

I’m really happy for the parents of my school district that we voted out the Republicans from our school board. They won’t have to sacrifice their children on the altar of conservatism.

Since we are limited on Internet service here, particularly rural students, the plan here when schools closed was a combination of distance learning provided by Scottsbluff schools combined with work packages sent to public libraries for students to pick up and drop off.

With Scottsbluff going full bore to open on time, distance learning they were providing may halt (that hasn’t been decided yet). Our own town is looking into restarting one-room schooling (at least for the younger children) as we don’t have many children (about twenty total), since no one in town has the disease.

The one-room school here closed at the end of the 2005 school year, so it’s still available for use.

I had my follow-up CAT scan on Wednesday to check my brain out and see what that aneurysm has been up to (if anything). I got a call from the doctor yesterday saying everything is fine and I don’t need to do anything between now and the follow-up visit in August where all my questions will be answered, etc. After a month, I feel fantastic. Since I can’t drink alcohol, my sleep has been better than any time in memory. Physically, I think I’m 95%. Thanks again to my fellow lizard peeps for your positive vibes and thoughts.

On a Texas corona note, my grandparents’ caregiver turns 90 tomorrow, and my family is still going to have a birthday gathering for her tomorrow. 10,000+ new cases a day, and they think it’s a great idea for people over the age of 70 to gather. I’ve already had my hospital quota for the next two decades, so it’s a pass for me.

Jesus, we’ve had more tornado warnings in the last six months here than most of my life, and I moved back to this area when I was 10, over four decades ago.

There was one in 1989 that touched down in Philly, near the south of end of Center City by the river. It damaged a parking garage, travelled under the Ben Franklin Bridge and then petered out in Camden.

That is literally the only one I can remember. Then, two warnings in the last six months. The last one we had, the sky turned green and there was a low rumble like a subway or train emanating all around us. Not an expert, but I’m guessing we were this close to having one form.

Honestly? I think it was COVID. Just not the typical breathing related kind. I went to Florida mid December, two weeks later I was in the ER with severe gastrointestinal problems (severe abdominal pain, extreme diarrhea, weakness).

They thought it might have been a norovirus but they didn’t know. I was so sick I literally ate rice for two months. I couldn’t stand the thought of anything else.

For the time being, the film industry is going through a remake/reboot/franchise cycle. Not to say there aren’t original films out there (and certainly not to say some of the current crop of superhero action films are all bad….quite a few of them are actually very good films) but they’re not always easy to find.

Eh, things like this come and go in cycles. In the 1930s, it was musicals. In the 1960s and ’70s, antihero films were all the rage. Eventually, we’ll get back to a cycle where we start seeing more original films in cinemas.

The picture we have of Donald Trump is not that he consistently pays sex workers, fee for service, to gratify his needs.

The picture we have of Donald Trump is a man who uses clout and power over women to elicit sex. While some rumors claim that he has engaged prostitutes, there are far more stories of him simply demanding sex, directly sexually assaulting, and even the famous Stormy Daniels story is a casting couch abuse of power.

I’m especially hesitant to use “whoremonger” w/r/t Trump because one of the things that gets de-emphasized when talking about Trump is how Trump hung around with guys that used modeling agencies to traffick and turn out teenagers from Eastern Europe, and that Trump Modeling was absolutely a trafficking operation that incorporated a debt trap…with the distinct possibility that the scenario was then used to push very young women into escorting.

“Trump hangs with hookers” isn’t an accurate accounting of why the man is gross and immoral. That the sex workers he’d been around were probably not doing that job under coercion…and given what was happening in New York, were probably not adults when they started be exploited…they’re not the issue.

I ended up simply sending them an email: but I later found out I might as well have saved myself the effort: these “SSA” Calls are all highly robotized, and use ever-changing lists of robo (or spoofed) numbers, and (as I read, later, elsewhere) virtually impossible to shut down.

Yeah, I thought about it, but even if they weren’t overwhelmed at this time because of all their closed offices, it would have been impossible. Anyway, I researched the number (for 30 seconds) and it appears to be spoofed. Though that’s not consistent with “call us back.” Who said thugs were clever?

Instead of having emergency beds and temporary hospitals ready to receive patients, they’re now scrambling to do what should have been done after seeing NY scramble to do the same exact thing.

This is all so fucking frustrating and avoidable.

We more or less went from schools open to virtual in the blinkmof an eye.
Notmphased in, tested, built over time, modified, adapted.
As a country we weren’t prepared or ready.

There are solutions. Working it out is gonna take time.

Them saying we tried and failed so reopen the schools is simplistic. (Besides dangerous)

When we barely tried, and have not at all failed

I’m not saying we should reopen schools, just that remote learning does not really work in many situations, especially for those who are younger and less affluent. My grand niece seemed to do well in first grade in her private expensive school (Chicago Jewish Day School) profiled in the NY Times — but not all her fellow classmates, each of whom probably had a private room and their own computer, prospered during the experience. And it’s not clear that she learned as much as would have in the traditional environment. Her school was more prepared than most, but for many students, parents have to keep a watchful eye and be able to intervene when there are technology or child meltdowns. And it is an especial challenge if the parents have to keep an eye on multiple students.

My grand niece, though, expressed her enthusiasm for continuing in zoom in the fall solely because instead of having to be outside for the school bus at 7:15 AM, she could sleep till 7:30 and be ready in time for class.

Maybe if they weren’t braindead Trump acolytes and Faux news watchers, they might have understood that there was no guarantee that the disease was going away in the spring. Many really believed that the warmer weather and more intense sunshine would destroy the virus. Our brother really believed that Abbott knew what he was doing and that Texas was handling this much better than those Democratic states out East.

He falied at just about everything he said on the campaign trail back in 2016 - so why should anybody give him a vote?

(and I’m royally PO’ed at folks who vote third party, and then bitch and moan about what the latest president has done or create a holier-than-thou persona. Sorry, folks, you get the politicians you have, not the politicians you want (cough-Sanders-cough) - and even if Sanders by some magical miracle would have won, do you really think he could ram his agenda through Congress? You can’t get what they’re smoking on the street, for sure….)
