today’s electoral-vote.com

four more reasons why trump cannot remain in power unless he actually wins the election

scroll to question starting with
“Q: A state is in a particular time zone because of state law, yes?”
(yeah, someone really asked this)

the two takeaways:

- stop reading silly clickbait op-eds, and stop worrying so much.
- He’s got to win the election. That’s his only option. He might try to cheat to do it (say, encouraging more Russian interference), but that’s very different than stealing an election after the fact.

Focusing on the future will require a substantial reckoning for the lawbreaking and corruption that has happened, that we know about, and the stuff we don’t know about. The reckoning needs to be thorough. I’m not sure it will be. But we’re not there yet

People need to deal with their feels in different ways. And I have lots of feels building up about this evil mofo and his cult.

President Trump has said he learned lessons from President Richard M. Nixon’s fall from grace, but in using the power of his office to keep his friend and adviser Roger J. Stone Jr. out of prison he has now crossed a line that even Mr. Nixon in the depths of Watergate dared not cross,” the New York Times reports.

“For months, some of Mr. Trump’s senior White House advisers warned him that it would be politically self-destructive if not ethically inappropriate to use his clemency power to help Mr. Stone, who was convicted of lying to protect the president. But in casting aside their counsel on Friday, Mr. Trump indulged his own sense of grievance over precedent and restraint to reward an ally for his silence.

(Bringing this forward from dead thread)

Roger Stone goes home with a huge smile on his face (which was plastered all over the media for Trump to feel envious about), while Trump is still stuck with all of ‘his’ problems and will still have to worry about how Roger Stone knows almost everything about all his corruption. Will Stone stay quiet? Trump doesn’t really get a thing out of this except the risk of future blackmail or exposure if Stone gets unhappy, and Stone is probably too smart to stand near windows.

Trump is clearly willing to live with the political downsides, but he’s got at least two problems here that a pardon* does not erase (in fact, it probably exacerbates them). The first, as we pointed out yesterday, is that this could expose Trump to conspiracy and/or obstruction of justice charges, depending on what is happening here, and whether or not it is ongoing. The second is that Stone no longer has Fifth Amendment rights against self incrimination. That won’t matter for the next five months, since he has presidential protection. But if Trump is defeated in November, there may be a whole bunch of people who want to chat with Stone, including members of Congress, federal judges, and possibly even state-level authorities in New York. If Stone ignores subpoenas, or if he refuses to testify, then he would be right back where he started: Go directly to jail, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Maybe, if it comes to that, Stone will take the bullet for Trump, and will spend a few years as a guest of Club Fed. But given how hard he fought back against going to prison this time, that is hard to believe. In any event, once again, the President has purchased some short-term gain at the possible cost of long-term pain. (Z)

* as noted below, i think this was written assuming a pardon was coming. then the commutation came and they edited the paragraph before publishing the page but didnt get it all corrected.

i’m sure scads of people will point this out and they will have it corrected by tomorrow

Herd Immunity my ass

Madrid (CNN)Spain’s large-scale study on the coronavirus indicates just 5% of its population has developed antibodies, strengthening evidence that a so-called herd immunity to Covid-19 is “unachievable,” the medical journal the Lancet reported on Monday.

The findings show that 95% of Spain’s population remains susceptible to the virus. Herd immunity is achieved when enough of a population has become infected with a virus or bacteria — or vaccinated against it — to stop its circulation.

The European Center for Disease Control told CNN that Spain’s research, on a nationwide representative sample of more than 61,000 participants, appears to be the largest study to date among a dozen serological studies on the coronavirus undertaken by European nations.

“In light of these findings, any proposed approach to achieve herd immunity through natural infection is not only highly unethical, but also unachievable,” said the Lancet’s commentary authors,

Herd immunity is totally achievable. After killing off 3-10% of the total population, anyway, at which point it’s sorta moot.

Herd immunity as a functional, useful, morally sound strategy… well, when you have a vaccine, yes. Not doing it the hard way.

Yeah - that’s the part the COVID-deniers/hoaxers/assholes kinda/sorta want to gloss over: that excessive mortality rate. Which isn’t really a factor in REAL “herd immunity”, which anyone who studies the matter in the least depth should realize ONLY applies where there is significant antibody/resistance already present in a sample population. Which, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to be happening with SARS-CoV-2.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Lubbock police are asking the public to avoid the scene as they work to contain some loose livestock on Marsha Sharp Freeway between Avenue Q and University.

The Lubbock County Sheriff has an emergency wrangler team that can be called out for just such emergencies. Unfortunately, many of its best wranglers are Texas Tech students who aren’t around just now.

mrs dm loves garbanzo flour biscuits
(i put dried peas in an electric coffee grinder)

Ingredients

1 c garbanzo flour
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
4 tbsp butter
½ c grated cheddar, gruyere, etc. gruyere is best!
½ c sour cream or buttermilk

So easy:
Heat oven to 425
Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
Cut in 4 tbsp butter
Add cheese and sour cream or buttermilk and mix well.
Spoon drop, make balls, ¼ c scoop, whatever you like onto sprayed rimmed baking sheet.
Makes about 9 biscuits.
Bake about 15 minutes until they start to turn brown

Jill Lawrence: “The longer the Trump presidency wears on, the more it reminds me of the joke about the man caught in a flood, turning down rides from a rowboat, a motorboat and a helicopter because he was waiting for God to save him. When he drowned, went to heaven and asked God why he’d let that happen, God replied: ‘I sent two boats and a helicopter, what more did you expect?’”

“We have been handed enough evidence of corruption, incompetence, wrongdoing and amorality for dozens of lawsuits and impeachment articles and 25th Amendment triggers. What more did we expect?”

“It’s not God asking that in today’s version of the joke. It’s a bunch of very crestfallen Founding Fathers.”

I like chickpeas and I can not lie.
Throw ‘em in my salad and do ‘em up on the side.

Delicious in three bean salad.

re: #140 The Ghost of a Flea

I keep seeing social media white people talking about eating Goya beans to own the libs, and all I can think is that there’s a 99.5% chance that no seasoning was involved.

Well, there is one positive aspect to the righties’ newfound affection for Goya products: since it’s likely that few/any of them have the least fucking notion of Latin-American food sensibilities, their “own the libs” Goya buys are probably going to end up at the same food banks said libs are using to dump their supplies of Goya beans, etc. So the food-needy may end up benefiting after all.

And apropos of previous discussions here, didn’t Goya announce that THEY were donating a million cans of garbanzos?
(IOW, their obviously least-selling bean??)

A few of them might have one moldering container, dust-aroma-ed can of “chili powder” at the back of the cabinet that they inherited from their mother.

She’s using an obscure version of the First Amendment which reads, “Board Game Companies shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

racial/ethic slurs and slurs against LGBTQ is the list.
that it.
that’s what has her all bent out of shape and outraged.

I didn’t look but figured that’s what was on the list. If she wants to play a game of racist Scrabble no one’s stopping her, but what ever company makes Scrabble no longer wants to be complicit.

My kid goes out and swims laps every day, O think Cleo will follow him. Hubby has a torn shoulder ligament and can’t do laps at the moment. I can swim, barely, she about took me down with her earlier. We’ll get there. First step was getting her over being afraid.

Teddy is pro-chickpea. Here are some birthday cupcakes I made for him several years ago. The cupcake is made with chickpea flour (Teddy is grain-free) and beef broth. I basically modified a people cupcake recipe. The frosting is mashed potatoes.

Glory the goofy coonhound is also on a grain-free diet because of chronic yeast infections.
She will love those cupcakes

He’s still guilty but he’s ‘served’ his sentence, and he still has 5th amendment protection.

But depending on what state he’s domiciled in, he may find that felony conviction somewhat limiting as to what he can and can’t do.
