Okay so it’s tough to get through to the Georgia Tech site which lists by county your percentage chance of being with at least one person with Covid-19 but I did.

Panhandle Public Health District here says there is decreasing moderate risk.

Georgia Tech lists Morrill County at >99% in a group of 100 people (the highest county in PPHD).

In a group of 10 people, they give odds of 46%.

Time to reopen the schools. /s

LOL! (The back is an Uno reverse card)

This card design was made in response to unfortunate reports of scientifically-illiterate people attempting to subvert or not comply with necessary public health measures. In fits of embarrassing selfishness, these individuals have been presenting “mask exemption cards” which have been, thankfully, widely-reported to be fraudulent and which hold no power or legal weight, but that didn’t stop a Lyft driver from trying to present one to us. (Thankfully, both Lyft as well as Delta Airlines have since adopted policies requiring all staff as well as all passengers to wear masks

Many businesses and even private citizens are, rightfully, informing such “exempt” persons that nothing under the Americans with Disabilities Act supports their position and refusing to accept their misrepresentation. However, instead of merely stating one’s position verbally to such folk… now you can counter their fake card with a much nicer and more powerful card. :-)

The first artwork below (high res versions if you click) is formatted for the ID-1 card specification (the standard 3⅜” x 2⅛” credit card size… capable of being printed on a badge printer / card printer) and below that is a version of the design in 3.5”x2” business card size.

Enjoy using these if you wish, and always please remember to do your best to be kind to those you encounter, even if they are not displaying kindness and concern for others. The only way we’ll get through this is by working together.

They will no longer jail or kill atheists or mutilate girls (at least legally).

Sudan scraps apostasy law and alcohol ban for non-Muslims (BBC)

After more than 30 years of Islamist rule, Sudan has outlined wide-reaching reforms including allowing non-Muslims to drink alcohol, and scrapping the apostasy law and public flogging.

“We [will] drop all the laws violating the human rights in Sudan,” Justice Minister Nasredeen Abdulbari said.

A raft of new laws were passed last week but this is the first public explanation of their contents.

Sudan has also banned female genital mutilation (FGM).

Under the new laws, women no longer need permission from a male relative to travel with their children.

The reforms come after long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was ousted last year following massive street protests.

Avoid indoor gatherings and wear the damn mask is the conclusion you should reach, no matter how the “controversy” is resolved.

Meanwhile in the world of capitalism:

Abandoned crew scrawl their desperate plight along ship’s hull (Splash, a magazine about commercial shipping)

Twelve crewmembers onboard the 1985-built 5,500 dwt oil tanker Viet Tin 01 are desperately looking for help as the vessel has been stranded in Malaysian waters since mid-March and they are running out of food supplies.

The seafarers onboard the vessel wrote “Help us. No food. No salary” on the hull of the vessel in an effort to seek help and they have also sent out a distress call through a mobile app used by seafarers globally.

In response to the distress call, the National Union of Seafarers Peninsular Malaysia’s (NUSPM) immediately provided food and essential supplies to the ship and have been coordinating with the Vietnamese government to repatriate the seafarers.

According to NUSPM, the union has arranged a visit onboard the vessel and learnt that the vessel was abandoned by its owner and it didn’t have fuel left which led to terrible living conditions including blackouts and unbearable heat, while the crewmembers didn’t have enough money to hire a boat to go ashore to purchase food supplies. Additionally, the vessel is posing a navigational hazard.

“While NUSPM tries to establish contact with the vessel owner who has clearly abandoned their responsibility for the wellbeing of their crew and the vessel, we want the Vietnamese government to exercise its responsibilities as a signatory to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) which requires minimum standards to be provided to seafarers and should the owner fail to do so, the government should be able to access funds from the ship owner’s contribution to the Protection and Indemnity (P&I club) coverage,” NUSPM said in a release.

COVID-19 testing triples in UH emergency rooms, experts preparing for new surge (ABC 5)

Cleveland’s University Hospital is setting up outdoor triage centres as another city buckles under the genocidaires of the Republican Party.

CLEVELAND — As confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ohio continue to rise, health experts fear that large gatherings and people seemingly fed up with stay-at-home orders may overwhelm the healthcare system in Northeast Ohio.

As cases surge and hospitals reach capacity in other states, healthcare workers and infectious disease experts are pleading with Ohioans to stay home, practice social distancing, and wear masks in public.

Dr. Claudia Hoyen said in late June, University Hospitals emergency rooms were testing between 60 and 80 people a day.

Hoyen added approximately 250 patients were tested in the emergency room on Friday at one particular campus.

Pope Francis ‘very saddened’ as Turkey converts Hagia Sophia from museum into mosque (CNN)

Not as much as those who believe in secular governance are, Frank.

The Hagia Sophia was a cathedral constructed during the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople. Once the Ottomans overran Byzantium, they changed it to a mosque.

When Turkey became a secular state after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War One, the Hagia Sophia was made into a museum, partly because of its age and historic significance, and partly as a mark that the new Republic of Turkey was to have separation of church and state.

Erdoğan Friday declared it is no longer a museum. It is immediately to be converted to a mosque, using state funds.

Erdoğan has been undermining the secular state and science, banning the teaching of evolution in schools and inserting religion classes in their place.

Part of that might be why the Republican Party isn’t very interested in sanctioning Turkey or punishing Michael Flynn. The AK Party and the Republican Party think the same; conservatives will always try to drag us back to the Dark Ages.

Icons and mosaics of various Christian figures will be covered during Islamic services, in keeping with the Qur’an’s strictures against depicting people.

Erdoğan says the mosque will still be open to the public outside of Muslim services.

State funds will be expended for this conversion, which Erdoğan says will “embrace everyone in a more sincere way.”

Nebraska Supreme Court rejects request to let grads practice law without taking bar exam (Omaha World-Herald)

The argument before the state Supreme Court was whether graduates of law school here should be required to sit the bar exam as a group due to the epidemic. That is required by state law. The examination lasts two days.

The Supreme Court here is meeting by Internet service rather than in-person. They know the issue is deadly. One question posed to the court by the plaintiffs was if the justices would be willing to sit in a room and proctor the two-day exam. That of course is not the point for a conservative.

The exam will require testing in advance for Covid-19. Anyone who tests positive will be deferred to a third exam later in the year set up for people who test positive.

In local news:

Effort seeks to pair prayer warriors with first responders (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

The title is somewhat misleading; Firefighter Ministry is grifting selling taking donations for magnets with the pictures of first responders (in uniform, so another erosion of the First Amendment), so the faithful can pray for their safety.

The effort has been underway for about a week and Smith said she has distributed about two dozen magnets. She has reached out to a number of different departments and is hoping to get photos of more first responders to feature. She has gathered photos of all Gering Police officers, some Scottsbluff Police officers, to name just some of the photos gathered. She is hoping that more will participate in the effort.

“I’ve sent information to Morrill, Mitchell, Bayard, all over the Panhandle,” she said. “I’m still waiting to hear back from many of them, but those I’ve heard back from are appreciative, especially the police chiefs.”

I wonder how their ministry would feel if Officer Smith of Bayard (note: there is no officer Smith) was an out atheist? Would they even depict him? Would they instead pray for his conversion rather than his safety?

I have questions.

Ever wonder where the H and N in influenza comes from? Why it’s so hard to create a vaccine? Why some flu can jump between species and other flus can’t? Why we occasionally have influenza pandemics which devastate the world?

Professor Dave Explains (a science communicator on YouTube) digs into the components of a flu viron and shows how they go from “someone just sneezed on you” to “you’re sicker than crap” to “you made five other people sick.”

Flu, like Covid-19, has an asymptomatic period where you can transmit the virus before you get sick (though it’s not as long). Like Covid-19, masks will help slow the spread of the disease (as shown in Kentucky’s reporting where seasonal flu cases dramatically dropped as mask use went up).

Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister is currently giving her daily briefing on the coronavirus situation here in Scotland. No new deaths have been reported for the fifth day in a row but six new cases have been confirmed. The worrying increase of 19 confirmed cases on Sunday has been analysed, it turns out seven of those cases were in a single care home, all asymptomatic and further action is being taken. The number of ICU cases remains at six with a total of 550 patients being treated in hospitals for COVID-19 at the moment.

Reporting of cases and deaths over the weekend is often delayed since some offices are not fully staffed on Saturday and Sunday so the results on a Monday are often lower than they should be. They’re corrected as soon as possible.

Scotland is gradually relaxing its lockdown restrictions, places like indoor shopping centres are now able to let customers in whereas previously they had to have street-access doors with no shared spaces. The Scottish government is ready and willing to reimpose restrictions if things get worse though.

The golf course in my county in Bridgeport reopened, and was shut when contact tracing revealed eight people connected to one match were sickened.

Golf is not exactly a tourist industry here (the Sandhills and Wildcat Hills are, along with hunting and fishing). The folks who came down with the illness were all locals (except one person from another county who was the likely spreader).

The arguments today about masks (can’t breathe, muh rights, the Constitution) were the same arguments made in 1918 by conservatives (conservatism doesn’t change much).

In San Francisco, a public health officer shot someone arguing “muh rights.” He was found to be innocent of wrongdoing. In Tuscon, a special “mask court” was established to prosecute people who argued “muh rights,” “it’s in the wash,” “you can’t make me” &c. The fine was $10 (about a day’s wages then).

The libertarians who run Twitter don’t care how many people are sickened or die as long as they can make money along the way. They will not put people in Twitter jail or suspend accounts which spread the doctored tweet.

The recent polling proves the point that the GOP is a cult.

They believe Trump far more than they believe health experts like Dr. Fauci. That’s not by accident. Trump is a modern day Jim Jones who’s destroying the economy and his base is literally drinking the kool-aid. They’re continuing to refuse masking and claiming that covid19 is a hoax, and they’ll keep believing it right up to the moment that they get it and die. It’s only in those final moments that they realize the error of their ways.

That’s the problem. It’s all fake news right until they’re the ones directly and personally affected. Well, now that covid19 is burning through key GOP states, they’re realizing how the shit just got real. They’ve wasted six fucking months and refused to mask or prep for this contingency. You’ve got Ducey and DeSantis ignoring health experts, and refusing to shut things back down, despite every metric showing in the red. Deaths are rising once again, and the GOP does nothing.

We can’t give them provisional licenses without the Bar Exam for the simple reason that half of them were probably going to fail. That’s how Bar Exams play out every year in every State. Letting them practice means a bunch of clients were going to get sub-standard work.

My nephew’s entire med school class was sent to their internships early, without finishing their final year of schooling. But the difference there is that.the final year of med school is a series of 6-week rotations in various specialties; each of which is graded individually by the supervising clinician at that facility. If the rotations you didn’t get to yet are Dermatology, Psych, Rheumatology, or some others on the list, it doesn’t reflect on your ability to intern on a Covid ward. (there’s 24 specialties; you were only ever going to do rotations in seven or eight of them anyway, probably the ones you were thinking of applying to do your Residency in). Also, interns are known to be trainees and they’re pretty closely supervised, so people a few months short of graduation are already as good as anybody would expect interns to be.

(plus, y’know, EMERGENCY NEED FOR AS MUCH MEDICAL STAFF AS COULD BE FOUND).

I get the idea you don’t want unqualified lawyers licensed. Accommodating the bar exam to include fewer people over more days, providing it via Internet (I admit I do not know if that is possible), &c.

All it’s going to take is a person who is not caught with a positive test, and viola (or maybe sting bass) we have a new cluster of Covid-19 cases.

Hence the argument before the court of would any of the justices sit to proctor (which I presume they deemed an irrelevant question, since it won’t affect them personally).

It’s two weeks and two days to the Multistate Bar Exam, a 200 question multiple choice exam which, when I took it back in the day, consisted of mostly “what is the most WRONG answer” questions. (I wish I was lying, I’m not.) In Texas, it would have been the first day of a 2.5 day slog. (I believe this has since changed.) And if I was at this point in my studies and I didn’t know the circumstances of whether or not I was going to take the bar at the end of the month, I think I would be completely losing my shit right about now.

ETA: given how long it’s taking to get results back from labs, if you went and got tested now, yeah, you might have a result back by the bar exam, but who’s to say you don’t pick it up between now and the bar exam???

He says we have witnessed the “most conspicuous scandal in American history.”

“Although crucial details remain concealed, the core narrative has been visible from the start. An American private citizen worked with foreign spies to damage one presidential candidate and help the other. That president accepted the help. When caught, the private citizen lied. When the private citizen was punished, the president commuted his sentence.”

CNN — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis publicly downplayed New York’s role in providing his state with shipments of an antiviral drug to help combat the coronavirus pandemic after a staffer in The Sunshine State’s health department had privately praised the assistance, CNN has learned.

Speaking to reporters last Thursday, DeSantis pointedly denied that New York was helping his state’s Covid-19 response, stating, “They’re not helping us.”
“I think that someone reached out to our office about ventilators — we got 6,000 just sitting idle, so we don’t need it,” the governor added. “We are working with the federal government on some of the Remdesivir.”

But a set of emails first reported by Politco and later reviewed by CNN shows New York’s offer to send remdesivir to Florida had been well received before DeSantis dismissed the state’s role in securing shipments of the drug.

It doesn’t take an FBI agent with 30 years of experience to see that all that money pouring in, over $114 million for an inauguration committee, a number that vastly exceeded all previous inauguration funding, despite this being a smaller party. Rumors circulated that much of the money originated outside the United States, which operated as a big red light. Apparently that strobing right light proved too difficult to ignore, and the investigations started.

OTOH, maybe this just demonstrates how gullible people really are and how brainwashing really pays off. Most of us don’t have the expertise or knowledge or time to evaluate the truth of various statements about science or history or the state of the world — we have to rely on others, whom we trust, to provide us the information. We need objective analysis by others to reach a coherent decision. And we don’t have agreed upon authorities that all — or a majority — accept. Is it possible that Trump didn’t really commute Stone, and just wanted the announcement? He’s tried that before…

Or, a simpler explanation might just be Trump Administration SOP: The Orange Anus made a well-publicized BFD about commuting Stone’s sentence, then left it up to some flunky (Bill Barr, probably) to actually DO the paperwork, not knowing or caring what procedures actually had to be followed (and over a weekend, besides). DeSantis is playing politics while the death toll soars in FL from covid19 and cases reach new highs almost daily.

Florida is seeing more cases than at any time during the worst of the NY outbreak. The only difference is the death toll at this point. It’s a function of where the cases are and who’s getting infected. But with widespread infection - and the percentage of tests coming back positive remains high, it means that covid19 is spreading out of control, it’s a matter of time before it hits the nursing home / retirement community set.

And the deaths may still be getting undercounted thanks to GOPers playing politics.

This mirrors the Arpaio situation, where he never actually got sentenced but Trump acted anyways.

It’s clear that Trump did this out of purely personal reasons - to protect himself, not because of any miscarriage of justice.

Biden should request a constitutional amendment to explicitly adjust the pardon/commutation power to exclude any effort to personally benefit from the commutation/pardon directly or indirectly. You would need to have a showing of why there was a miscarriage of justice - saying it isn’t enough.

The WH did announce that Trump was commuting Roger Stone’s sentence. One can argue that you cannot take anything they say at face value, but they repeatedly confirmed that’s what Trump was doing. The fact that the paperwork wasn’t completed — or even started — would be totally consistent with their modus operandi.

Mueller called it: Trump got the testimony he wanted, then commutes Stone’s sentence
“[Trump] knows I was under enormous pressure to turn on him,” Stone told a journalist, in explaining the possible transaction. Robert Mueller suspected this was a scenario, according to recently-unsealed information in a less-redacted version of the Mueller report.
by Charlotte Klein, Vanity Fair

apropos of what we’ve been talking about:

And later that night, in a statement announcing the “Executive Grant of Clemency commuting the unjust sentence of Roger Stone, Jr.” signed by Trump, the White House declared Stone to be “a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump Presidency.” Politico notes that unlike an outright pardon, which would absolve Stone completely, a commutation allows Stone to proceed with an appeal of his conviction.

Three corporations backing a California initiative to incarcerate more people
Judd Legum, popular information

The senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others have sparked a national reckoning on the criminal justice system. There is a growing consensus that the law enforcement apparatus in the United States is plagued with systemic racism and needs reform. But when voters in California, the country’s most populous state, go to the polls in November, they will consider a ballot initiative that rolls back prior reforms to make the legal system more fair and equitable. The initiative, known as Proposition 20, is being financed in part by corporations that, in recent days, have publicly declared their commitment to racial justice.

Every store has a mask required sign.
No enforcement.
Then you have the dipshits who crowd you. Had a fucking lady bounce into me in the checkout line at Lowes yesterday. I stepped forward to hold a barcode up and she just walked right the fuck into me.
Completely oblivious to where she was. I just turned and glared at her. She laughed and said sorry.
I never liked people who crawled up my ass as I stood in line to begin with. Now? I’m nuts.
My county has 2 deaths, and when our Governor uses words like “Green” it’s like the war is over, whoopee, let’s all party.
Our strip is wide open. Dining, shopping, etc. Some places have a person at the door, most don’t even wipe down.
Me and my wife are doing just as you and yours. Limited shopping, no personal contact with friends and I ain’t going to a bar or restaurant until I feel right about it.
Probably be a year until we get a bass player and rehearse and play.
Maybe never, because it comes down to “Do I really want to be in this place?”

I gave notice to all of my bands that I’m out until at least January. Kind of a moot point, since all my gigs save one have been canceled. The guy who owns 5 beach bars told us he’s writing off the entire season. And any type of indoor show is a hard nope for me.

But even if the shows weren’t canceled I’d bail anyway. We’re up to our elbows in knuckleheads around here, and when there’s alcohol involved they really get stupid.

Well our bass player died and we were booked to do a show and got a very good bass player to come and go through our sets and we were going to do that show and then work out how and what to do next.
Then CV showed up.
I met once with my drummer, who plays with a few other acts, and his stuff was cancelled except for a private outside party for a group he’s done for years.
A guitarist who I know moved away and came up here to play a Public House outside last Friday. He’s got bookings. He’s got to be fucking stupid. Lancaster to York to Williamsport and he lives outside Lebanon.
Nope. Nope. Nope.

7 takeaways from Disney World’s July reopening

it starts with this

I’ve visited Disney’s parks in California and Florida too many times to count. The world’s changed since my last visit. Most recently, news of Covid-19 cases in Florida skyrocketing have been hard to ignore. But I donned my mask and packed my sanitizer because I was ready to see what this new Disney had in store for its guests. My goal: Find what’s changed at Disney, what remains the same and whether the magic of the experience was enough to offset the discomfort of wearing a face covering.

then the conclusion

Ultimately, there is no easy answer to deciding whether a trip to Disney at this time is worth it. How much Disney magic is needed to justify the cost — and abide by the enhanced health and safety protocols — is a matter of personal preference.
Ultimately, to me, it felt like an almost-normal Disney vacation.
There were a lot of things I wish I could have done. I missed not being able to have a tiki drink at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, where the decorations come alive, but here’s what I found: When I was doing other cool things, it was easy to forget about what I was missing.
That’s Disney’s magic — making it feel like whatever you’re doing at that moment is the most magical thing on Earth.

worth it
justify the cost
things i couldnt do
and the disney magic

And how do you enforce that? Are there state troopers stopping all vehicles entering the state to determine where they are coming from? Does every arrival at the airports have to list what states they have visited? And every arrival at bus stations and train stations? And how about residents who have traveled to hot spots? They could be bringing the virus back with them. Shouldn’t they all be forced to self-quarantine?

I’m seeing more of my friends rushing to play again, and I really worry for them. Which from the look of it is more than they’re doing for themselves.

A friend with a pretty successful tribute band got fed up with being in NY while the virus was raging here, so he went to Florida where he owns a condo. I spoke to him when he first left and he was all ‘Fed up with the bullshit’ and ragey against Cuomo.

Talked to him Saturday. He said he should have just stayed in New York.

Yes. They set up police at the Louisiana border here in Texas, took your name, entered it in a database, found out where you were going, and tracked you. He doesn’t mean out of state residents, he means those who have traveled out of state.

Florida official who opposed local mask mandate in ‘critical condition’ with COVID-19

A public official in Florida who voted against a resolution requiring people wear face masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus is now in critical condition after being infected by the disease.

Local news station News 4 Jax reports that St. Johns County Commissioner Paul Waldron has been hospitalized after being diagnosed with COVID-19, and his daughter posted on Facebook late last week that he went into septic shock and has “many organs struggling.”

I won’t believe in good news unless it’s November 4th and the actual votes have shown that the Democrats won. In late July 1988, Dukakis had a commanding 56-38 lead over Bush. Different time — different style candidates — but a demonstration that numbers can change in the blink of an eye.

See this is one of those “signs from God” I was talking about yesterday at some point. You know the morons among us on Facebook are seeing these stories or hearing of them. This is the sign their dumb shit isn’t working and they still proceed. They literally only believe this is real when they are dying from it after likely being a disease vector themselves.

If anything, IF we manage to survive this, this shows us we have got to do better with science in schools with a focus on how science actually evolves and changes as new data/information is discovered. We also need to look at the current textbook system and have a national minimum standard that every public and private school must meet for graduation from high school and it has to begin in kindergarten. Common Core is too scary for them, name it something else and tweak it some more. Something has to change.
