I think we’re actually kinda in luck that Trump is as batshit cray-cray and dysfunctional as he is.

It’s exposing the amount of blind obedience and cult belief that the right wing has built up behind Fox, Hate Radio and their constellation of interlocking echo chambers online.

In the hands of a legit evil genius, a Reinhard Heydrich, for example, we’d all be rounded up and breaking rocks on the Koch Brothers Work Farms.

The Hatch Act does not apply to the President, Vice-President, and certain high-level officials (basically Cabinet members and department heads).

It does not apply to the military (though the military is prevented from partisan speech by the UCMJ), though it does apply to civilian employees of the military.

The act was originally submitted by New Mexico Senator Carl Hatch (D) in 1939. It has frequently challenged in courts on free speech grounds but consistently upheld.

For what it’s worth, my local TV stations didn’t give the “press conference” much play. Our NBC affiliate stayed in its 5:30 newscast. The CBS and ABC affiliates broke into their newscasts to take the start of it, but didn’t stay with it very long, and were both out of it again well before 6.

This got missed at the end of the last thread…so I’m bumping it.

Kansas Rep. Steve Watkins was charged Tuesday with three felonies and a misdemeanor related to an investigation into whether he illegally voted in a 2019 municipal election.

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced the charges about a half-hour before Watkins, a first-term Topeka Republican, was set to appear on a televised debate with his primary challengers. Watkins’ office and campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The felony charges are interference with law enforcement by providing false information, voting without being qualified and unlawful advance voting. Watkins also faces a misdemeanor charge for failing to the notify the DMV of his change of address.

Watkins used a Topeka UPS store as his registration address for the 2019 municipal election and allegedly voted in the wrong city council district. Sources say Watkins was living with parents at the time, but used the UPS address to obscure that fact.

kansascity.com

There was a bit about him applying for the Alaska permanent fund 11 times (again a question about his residency) but this article doesn’t mention it.

This is on the 2020 Apocalypse Bingo card, but it’s been on the 2019, 2018, 2017, etc. cards all the way back to 1347. The bubonic plague is endemic to ground critters in southern Colorado, northern New Mexico, and the high country in Arizona. We’re told to leave them alone, don’t touch them, etc. Also, unlike COVID-19, there is a known treatment for the bubonic plague and people don’t (generally) die of it like they have in the past.

Plague was endemic to the prairie dogs in the Nebraska Panhandle, but was eliminated.

The the Republicans took over with the Tea Party wave and started defunding the USDA programme which keeps prairie dogs in check. Now we have towns being undermined by them, and it’s only a matter of time before plague returns here.

The disconnect between conservatives wanting to kill everyone and the voters here still voting for conservatives is stunning.

The way the USDA does “pest control” is deeply weird.

They were eliminated from towns. There’s no way you can eliminate all the prairie dogs here without nuking the whole area.

The program basically ring-fenced towns to prevent prairie dogs from undermining them.

After the Tea Party wave, freezes on federal hiring meant that gradually the people working in that programme for the USDA were reduced. Now we have only one, and he is responsible for all 69,000 or so square miles of Panhandle.

What we’re seeing is language that states more and more outright that it’s right to not care about your inferiors, and it’s right to demand that they do what you want even if it endangers them.

Thirty years ago, these people found the idea of women assertions about sexual harassment not just contemptible but a disruption of what was “natural” interaction between men (with power) and women.

As I’ve said before, they keep telling on themselves: they don’t beliefs in universal rights…the opposite, they believe that there is a natural hierarchy and those below them do not have inherent dignity or worth, and that it is offensive for the lower orders to insist that they do not deserve to be mistreated, sexually abused, or die unnecessarily.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jul 14, 2020 • 6:56:29pm

So yesterday (or the prior day?… all the pandemic days are alike to me…) I noted a link to a story about a “megaquake” in California, an item that found its way to trend on Twitter.

As I noted, the story and Twitter were really misrepresenting the San Andreas fault and should not use the term “megaquake” as the San Andreas is not the type of fault that can make the biggest quakes. In the US those conditions exist only the Pacific northwest and in Alaska.

Sure enough, on a Youtube channel today that has some following (389k subs), the host throws out “megaquake” in a video meant to scare. However, he rightly notes where such a thing can happen in the US, and it’s not the San Andreas fault:

Cascadia: The Earthquake that will Destroy Westcoast America

While I’ll give this guy credit for noting that the San Andreas is not going to destroy the US (though parts of California are going to be eventually devastated), he still throws out the idea that a Northwest “megaquake” is somehow overdue.

That is just wrong.

These things are too stochastic to make such assertions.

Surely there will be more giant thrust fault quakes in the northwest, just as there will be more in Japan, Alaska, Indonesia, and Chile/Peru. It’s what happens.

But we can’t say something is overdue, any day now, etc.

Will such a megaquake happen in my lifetime? Unknown, and unknowable. At best we can put a rough probability on an event during a long enough time period, say 50 years or 100 years. But probabilities like these are just a way of describing uncertainty and are not predictions.

Alabama is Aladamned?

The only thing that can help Doug Jones is as Trump flails he really starts going to a next-level of stupidity that even the GOP Senate will have to do something.

Such an event will cause a crisis in this country, but that is where we are at in 2020.

Apparently, they need more trials to find out:

Today on the Interstate 80 Speedway, a Utah driver weighs in.

Camaro reaches speeds of 155 mph in chase from Seward to Grand Island (Omaha World-Herald)

TL;DR, a twenty-three year old Utah man was arrested after a sixty-mile chase.

The Nebraska State Patrol notes a persistent problem with speeding during the pandemic. In the first two months, two hundred people were arrested for exceeding 100 mph.

The man did not break the Camaro record, set at the end of June by another man driving 174 mph.

This aerosol/not aerosol business is beginning to seem like quarrels over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. The measures New York took (also too much of Europe, Japan and South Korea) will work, if assiduously applied. We know that outdoors is safe with precautions, indoors is not (massive BLM demonstrations and the Wisconsin primary did not cause spikes in covid, parties without masks and social distancing did). We know what we have to do.

I’m not saying that research into means of transmission isn’t useful, I’m saying that arguments about degree of harm are best left to the scientists. We’re mostly not qualified to judge the arguments, and the conclusion they come to won’t change what we need to do to get ourselves out of this.

The aerosol/not aerosol debate is important for those of us that have to work at the company and for schools. Because if it’s able to survive airborne without being in water, it can hang around longer and travel in a much larger pattern. That really means further distancing will be required.

What I’m saying is that we know enough now. Covid-19 aerosol transmission has some, probably comparatively minor compared to droplet transmission, role in spreading the virus. The argument is over details, but what we do know already tells us that indoors is unsafe — there is a significant risk to being indoors without serious ventilation and social distancing. Does it really matter to you whether the chance is 1% or 5%? I’d want to stay out in either case.

(Are they talking about survival without water? What I’ve seen is talk of microdroplets — and we already know the virus can survive for some hours on hard surfaces like plastics.)

Omaha annexed eight suburbs yesterday. (It is fairly easy for cities to annex territory.)

The city auditor expects the property owners’ taxes will go down. Trash service charges will be eliminated, since Omaha provides trash service and the eight suburbs contract with companies.
