Local conservative corruption.

Cindy Drake, a librarian who’s worked at the state history society for 43 years, was placed on paid “investigatory leave” for a week on Friday afternoon, a couple of hours after reading a critical statement to the History Nebraska Board of Trustees.

Most of the criticism was directed at the agency’s director, Trevor Jones, who Drake maintains has engaged in a campaign to force her to retire over the past four years.

A COVID-19 scam is making the rounds.

The Better Business Bureau warns of scammers leaving or sending messages explaining that you’ve come in contact with someone who has tested positive for the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The message provides a link for more information, but the link can contain malware that downloads to your computer, tablet or smartphone.

Another version of the scam, officials said, involves a robocall claiming to be part of “contact and tracing efforts.” It asks individuals to verify personal information.

With some people already wary of contact tracing, scammers are making it worse here.

Public Health districts, county and city health departments here always contact people by telephone and identify who they are. If a person is unsure whether the call is legitimate, they can call the health department and verify the caller.

Well, after the Independence Day Rodeo at Camp Clark here went swimmingly, creating a Covid-19 outbreak, Cheyenne County pushes ahead with their county fair.

One of the annual events in Cheyenne County is the county fair. There is the viewing of crafts, including clothing designs, animal shows and auction, carnival, concerts and many other events.

Many of this year’s events have been put on hold. The good news is the majority of the 4-H programs will remain.

The livestock judging and showing, and the numerous other programs, from clothing construction to static exhibits, will be conducted. However, this year, 4-H members will be the only ones in the exhibit building and the pavilion. The goal is to keep participants healthy, according to Laura Narjes. 4-H Extension Educator. She added they also want to return more normalcy to the community. However, the return of normalcy has to be done under public health guidelines including Panhandle Public Health, Centers for Disease Control and Nebraska’s Directed.

County Fair 4-H Events On Schedule (Sidney, Nebr. Sun-Telegraph, more at the link)

I have a better way to “return to normalcy”: Cancel public events like this for a few weeks.

From a California mfg biz pal-

All day long today at work. “Will you be open tomorrow?” “Will we have warning of closing?” “What if I can’t come to get my castings?” Various fellow employees stressing about being sick or getting exposed. Feeling hot? Might be a fever might just be 100 degrees and a two-block walk and a long wait for the elevator. Then you set off the fever alarm on the thermometer trying to get in to work…

Do the job dodge the bullet and try not to explode at nonmask Plandemic assholes.

The State Fair of Texas has canceled for this year, and it normally starts in late September. If those running that fair called it off, every other fair should close.

Haven’t spoken for a bit on VA, but if other coastal Southern states are any indication, you should understand that the word “clusterfuck” adequately explains the current situation.

Basically the situation is easy to understand: Just as Northern states initially bore the brunt of the outbreak while Southern states seemed to be taking it all in stride due to rural isolation, Northern VA was a hot zone from March to May while Southern VA was relatively okay despite the earliest cases being seen here in Hampton Roads.

3 months have passed and the situation is entirely reversed, with Northern VA having the virus relatively under control because they took it seriously, while Hampton Roads is now a leper colony because Richmond rushed forward with “reopening” to take advantage of the summer tourism dollars. Districts that previous were doing alright are now posting higher and higher numbers because nobody’s following the rules and everybody’s treating the outbreak as “over.”

And yes, all this is happening while the debate rages over whether or not schools will reopen in September (VA traditionally opens after Labor Day to give Hampton Roads an extra month of tourism revenue on the backs of student labor). No talk yet of things closing back down, but don’t be surprised if we’re back in lockdown the moment Labor Day passes.

Va Gov Northam is threatening to clamp down on the Hampton part of the Tidewater Region:

After a sharp increase in infections in Virginia’s Hampton Roads area, Gov. Ralph Northam (D) took more aggressive steps to control the virus from spreading further. He is ordering inspectors to make unannounced visits to restaurants and retail establishments, and then revoking their licenses if workers aren’t wearing masks or customers are allowed to congregate in tight spaces.

He said the statewide action will involve 500 health inspectors with 100 more to be added in the coming weeks.

The action will mainly be focused in the tourist-heavy Hampton Roads area, where some younger patrons inside restaurant bars and at parties have not been wearing masks, Northam said.

You have to love that in making what he thinks is a winning argument for people accepting that the worst has occurred and we have to learn to live with it, he still thinks the people who should sacrifice are Millenials who should accept that people will die from the virus rather than Boomer and Gen-Xers who are simply being asked to wear masks and stay home if they don’t need to be out.

That instead of a few weeks or months of discomfort and isolation, the “solution” is just to accept hundreds of thousands of deaths and “adapt.”

Northam’s punting, that’s all he’s really doing. Most of Hampton Roads basically shuts down after Labor Day anyway, so he’s just trying to get us to that hurdle and then he can slap the “shutdowns” back in place. Why? Because if he shuts things down now, that’s a month and a half of revenue that won’t be there when budget talks start this fall.

The only way Sessions could have ever hoped to preserve his political career was simply to never abandon his Senate seat. By accepting the AG appointment, he was inevitably going to find himself in a position where he’d either incur Trump’s ire for refusing to take a bullet or taking that bullet and exposing himself to criminal liability. Even if he’d chosen not to recuse himself after Comey’s termination and put the kibosh on any investigation by the DOJ, all he would have done is delayed the inevitable unless one assumes that the House would have stayed in Repub hands past the midterms. If anything, a total refusal by the DOJ to look into any of Trump’s crimes with Sessions in the AG office would have only fueled the fires that saw a Blue Wave in 2018.

By accepting the AG appointment, he was inevitably going to find himself in a position where he’d either incur Trump’s ire for refusing to take a bullet or taking that bullet and exposing himself to criminal liability.

Because that is the fate of almost all all non-family members who enter into any sort of arrangement with Trump

Doug has to stay healthy just in case Trump takes a dump on the 50 yard line during the national anthem at the ‘Bama opener. Tuberville is a standard dumbass SEC carpetbagger, but he lacks most of the moral stench of Sessions, so we’re ahead on points.

Well, Christian Democrats really only face pushback from Republican Christians. Despite what the GOP says, Christians make up the majority of the Democratic Party.

Pew Religious Landscape Survey (held every few years) puts the overwhelming majority of atheists in the Democratic Party (54% Dem, 23% GOP, rest independent or minor parties).

Catholic theology uses the concept “practical atheist” to define someone who attends a lot of masses, professes the faith, but acts and lives as though there were no heaven, hell, nor god. A lot of priests and a number of notable popes were practical atheists.

Note that the term has been adopted within the atheist community in a different sense, tangled up with “pragmatic” and other flavors of atheist.

Brian Dalton (“Mr. Deity”), a Christianity counter-apologist who used to work for Dennis Prager in the 1980’s and 1990’s, takes aim at a PragerU video entitled “The Charlottesville Lie.” If you guessed that Dennis Prager is mischaracterising what happened at Charlottesville at the “Unite the Right” rally you’d be close: He mischaracterises how the press treated that event and Donald Trump in the days afterward.

I’ve never seen Mr. Deity go into a stream of invective on his videos, but in this one he directly calls out Mr. Prager then descends into -ah- colourful language. He directly calls out Mr. Prager for intellectual dishonesty over the things he taught Mr. Dalton while employed with him.

Quite some time ago I noticed the Youtube phenomenon of people having channels where all they do is present themselves with their “scratchers” being revealed.

It’s a form of entertainment, I guess.

But most of these people have relatively (to major Youtube entertainment channels) few subscribers and viewers. So they can’t be making very much money from Youtube, certainly not enough to support their gambling habit.

Example: check out the stack of $20 scratchers this youtuber is playing with… and this is just on one day:

We Found Some Nice Wins!!🤑 Pt 2 🏁

From where do these people get the money to buy hundreds of $20 tickets at a time?

He’s playing the part of Mayor Vaughn from Jaws, shouting “THOSE BEACHES STAY OPEN!” even as people watch swimmers getting munched on the hour. It’s all about “summer dollars,” all about getting the tourists in now so that he doesn’t have to stand before the voters in a couple months to explain why he’s butchering the state budget due to funding shortfalls. The fact that an economic “recovery” plays to his biggest political sponsor (Donny) also doesn’t hurt things in his eyes.

I stand by what I said weeks ago, these fuckers all told themselves back in April that if they could “reopen” in May and keep things open all the way til August without major flare-ups, then the outbreak would be deemed “over” and they’d get all sorts of accolades for standing fast in the face of criticism. They bet the farm on that scenario and so are committed to it, come hell or high water.

It’s all short-term thinking for these assholes, about getting past the next “hurdle” under the delusion that the long-term will take care of itself. Get to August and the schools reopen, which frees up the parents to go back to work, which means the economic “recovery” kicks into high gear. That “recovery” provides the stage for the big Trump comeback in the polls, which starts with a huge turnout for the convention and leads to him winning back public support because things have returned to “normal.” That public support follows him into the debates, where he makes the case for another 4 years while destroying Biden’s base of support. And lauded debate performances lead to a big win in November that not only sees him reelected, but Repubs surge back to control of Congress.

What’s that you say? “What if they stumble at any one of these hurdles?” Well, that can’t happen, because this plan is very cunning. More cunning than a fox!////

My wife wants to plan a local trip since we weren’t able to go to Germany this year.

She’s planning a trip to Nebraska’s newest state park, Smith Falls State Park (goes to the state game and parks commission Website)

Smith Falls is the highest waterfall in Nebraska, and is located south of Valentine on the Niobrara River.

I’m mostly noticing this because I used to work for the MN DNR (often with the parks department), but there is NO information on that Smith Falls SP site about Covid-19 procedures while using the park. If you open a website for a MN park the first thing on the site is a VISITOR ALERT with information about what’s open or closed, where you can’t camp, and rules you must follow to use the park safely.

We’re kind of authoritarian like that up here. Have fun but follow the goddamned rules!

Those rules have not been put there arbitrarily or to enforce an ideology that wants to make sheeple out of us all.

But that is an ongoing problem in America, and one that has really come to a head recently: when people find rules inconveniencing, many of them choose to make a political issue out of them. Especially when they they have gotten a reinforcing message from their leaders.

Sending kids back to schools without at least a contingency plan on how to do it safely is child endangerment.

And if we want to do it, we would need to look into temporary auxiliary facilities and additional teachers/staff to reduce class size and crowding, changes to existing facilities to minimize risk and exposure and a clear set of guidelines.

I see none of that forthcoming, only threats to withhold funding if schools do not buckle down and obey the Federal government.

I gave up watching DWTS several seasons back, when they abandoned the idea of the show being based around ballroom dances and also turned even more schlocky, still, Bergeron was the best host IMO, even better than the original BBC version’s hosts.

Tom Bergeron & Erin Andrews Axed From’DWTS’

And then the news broke last night that Tyra Banks is going to be the new host. Tyra is very talented and created her own empire with ANTM. But the move is clearly aimed at trying to appeal to a younger audience. DWTS really dropped in viewership the past couple of years compared to the early years.

DWTS has alway been gimmick-heavy, more so than the original Strictly Come Dancing on BBC. But even the latter show has turned more gimmicky in recent years (and I gave up on watching it too.)

The judging on these shows were always in large part a work. What the judges say in public is not really an accurate description of the dancing ability or performance. The judges intentionally vacillate between saccharine and vitriolic in an attempt to appear dramatic.

Also, the shows in recent years have included more and more not-really-amateur dancers as contestants. These days many of the contestants have professional dancing backgrounds, even if not partner-dancing backgrounds. In the UK this caused some outcry a couple of years ago, but I think the UK audience now accepts it.

“Reality-tv” has always been a work, a lie.

Donald Trump is the reality-TV President.

We are a society that pretends about what “reality” truly is, because we don’t want real reality.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jul 15, 2020 • 5:49:56am

This is good.

Nor did I expect such good, observant writing. Mary Trump crafts both the tragic and comic scenes well. She begins with a great, witty set piece about her visit to Washington for a family get-together in honor of her two Trump aunts’ birthdays. In her room at the Trump International Hotel, “my name was plastered everywhere, on everything: TRUMP shampoo, TRUMP conditioner…TRUMP shower cap, TRUMP shoe polish….I opened the refrigerator, grabbed the split of TRUMP white wine, and poured it down my Trump throat so I could course through my Trump bloodstream and hit the pleasure center of my Trump brain.” When Jared Kushner finally, briefly joins them in a White House dining room, his wife responds like a Stepford princess: “‘Oh, look,’ Ivanka said, clapping her hands, ‘Jared’s back from his trip to the Middle East,’ as if we hadn’t just seen him in the Oval Office.”

Methodist church split vote delayed until 2021 (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Vote on a proposed split within the United Methodist Church (UMC) has been put on hold due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic and social injustice within the United States.

The worldwide church conference has been scheduled for May 15 in Minneapolis, however, with the onset of COVID-19, the conference has been pushed back to the last few days of August and the first week of September in 2021.

At the heart of the split is whether same-sex marriages should be permitted and whether LGBTQ individuals should be permitted to become clergy. Traditionalist Methodists say no. More progressive members say yes.

Both camps of the United Methodist Church of course cite the Bible for their positions, leaving people like me wondering how the Bible can be used to justify anything, since it can be used to justify everything.

The problem being that the 1973 version is better, showing them both together means either spoiling the story by showing the 2010 version first or having the second showing be a let-down.

The versions of I Am Legend are so different that that might be less of a problem.

Republicans know that Trump is toxic but won’t publicly disavow him.

In a mass-solicitation designed to boost flagging interest in registering to vote by mail, the Republican Party of Florida featured a Trump tweet from June 28 that praised absentee ballots but that had his opposition to mail-in voting strategically edited out.

“Absentee Ballots are fine. A person has to go through a process to get and use them,” Trump said in the tweet. The rest of the quote was blurred out: “Mail-In Voting, on the other hand, will lead to the most corrupt Election is USA history. Bad things happen with Mail-Ins. Just look at Special Election in Patterson, N.J. 19% of Ballots a FRAUD.” Source: Politico

He saw me and came running over and said that there was a package for me but he left it at the post office. First, I don’t know how the hell my mail person knew who I was. I live in an apartment complex in suburban Seattle. I say hello but never had a conversation with him. I told him that it was okay to just bring it tomorrow. About an hour later, he was knocking at my door delivering my package.

re: #117 Targetpractice

A plan so cunning you can put a tail on it and call it a weasel!

My main gripe with the films following T2 is that it makes little sense.

In T2, Miles Dyson dies after destroying/deleting all his research, Cyberdyne itself is destroyed, the Skynet processor and surviving T800 arm from the first film are destroyed, the T1000 is destroyed and the T800 is also destroyed, taking its Skynet processor with it. With no Skynet processors to reverse-engineer, Skynet would’ve simply ceased to exist in the blink of an eye as it was the paradox of Skynet sending back a T800 in the first film that led to its creation.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the other films in the franchise so I might be forgetting some details. But the story should’ve wrapped up with T2 as the paradox was resolved.

Twitch is… Twitch. It’s a festering mound of gamer insanity, but the great thing compared to Youtube is it’s more focused and it doesn’t bombard you with piles and piles of utterly awful recommendations.

T3 addressed that. The plot of T3 was basically the inevitability of Skynet and the war with machines. And, unless you’re going to buy that the universe can have a loop that creates itself, something would have to create Skynet without the chip.

If you earn more than 50K/yr working from home… Barbados is offering a one-year visa to relocate there (with your family) for the duration. $5000. You have to quarantine your first week there while they process the tests, but then you can live at the beach and pay rent and buy groceries and go to restaurants and send your kids to school and everything else until it’s safe to go home.

The Florida approach. They’ve had 4,000+ excess viral pneumonia deaths so far this year, and no health experts can explain that as anything other than covid19. There’s no unidentified pneumonia outbreak, so any attempt to claim some mystery ailment as causing these deaths run up against excess mortality stats and that the only thing that’s changed is covid19 being present and out of control.

Trump campaign in disarray! Article from Politico, here are a couple tidbits about how they’re trying to bounce back from Tulsa.

In the days after President Donald Trump’s poorly attended rally in Tulsa, Okla., senior campaign aides repeatedly assured their optics-obsessed boss it was a one-off debacle.

They demoted a longtime staffer who had managed logistics for the failed campaign comeback [Tulsa].

Two people close to the Trump campaign said its primary issue is locating areas where local and state officials are both willing to permit large-scale campaign events and unlikely to blame the president if an outbreak of the virus occurs once he’s come and gone.

Internal divisions over how much focus Trump should lend to the virus have plagued the White House in recent weeks. Chief of staff Mark Meadows and senior adviser Jared Kushner have both pushed the president to focus on communicating a strong second-term agenda, including measures he would take to help bring the U.S. economy roaring back to life, while others have encouraged him to focus on the combating the virus itself given its widespread impact on most people’s lives.

Link please?

Well, politifact claims that’s false.

But I think they’re bending over backwards to do it. They say that the current year’s figures count all causes on the death certificate, where historical data only give the underlying cause of death.

The historical data shows about 918 deaths a year from pneumonia. So far this year it’s 1,762 deaths from COVID-19 and 5,185 from pneumonia. So, if the underlying pneumonia rate was unchanged that’d be (ignoring the fact that we’re nowhere near the end of the year) about 918 deaths from “normal” pneumonia, 1,762 deaths from covid-19 and 2,505 deaths from some mysterious pneumonia that came from nowhere.

Politifact: mostly bollocks.

(Edit: “say”, not “sat”. Gotta keep it clear for people making the comprehensive collection of my witty, incisive pronouncements).

Also today, in personal news:
a) Indoor food places, hairdressers and pubs opened today in Scotland, with stringent social distancing and hygiene restrictions. I know, because I went to a previous favourite food place with my husband, as a sort of celebration at being able to eat out for the first time since March. We were wearing masks as much as we could (ie most of the time), and the first thing that happened when I went in was that my forehead was zapped with a futuristic raygun-shaped infrared device, which, it turned out, was taking my temperature. As expected, I passed. It turns out we were the first and only people here this lunchtime. It was good, then we went home. (However, I think I’ll give a pass on the pubs for the moment.)
b) It looks like I’ll be re-joining my work pretty soon, after months of furlough….

eh. The Supreme Court rarely ends a case. Usually, and this was the case in the subpoena cases, they create some test for the lower courts to apply and then remand the case for the lower court to apply the test. So, yeah, of course, he’s going to keep litigating the matter, because the lower court now has to apply the test that the Supreme Court created. And, of course, there’s still a chance that he could win, though I suspect it is highly unlikely.

Yeah, about that.

Just a bit too hard work for me. And since all white people (Germans) look alike I can’t tell what the fuck is going on. Great idea, but not relaxing TV.

Ok, I like a good time travel story, I read All You Zombies all those years ago, even Barnes’ horrible Kaleidoscope Century, but Dark? Nah.

I binge-watched the first 2 seasons last year before our real-life apocalypse. I don’t recall enough of the series to appreciate season 3 and have no interest in rewatching the early episodes. But I may try to push through anyway.

LOL, Who does the Supreme Court think they are!?!?!

The Court bounced the cases back to the District Court to act in accordance with the SCT ruling. That’s what remanded means - and now the District Court is asking for Trump’s returns to be expedited in accordance with the ruling, while Trump’s looking to delay.

I remember wondering if I’d still be around to see the millennium or if I would have already died of old age. (I turned 52 in 2000)

Same here, 51 in 2000. I remember our neighbor, Mrs. Rice (who was born in 1860), telling me when I was 8 or 9 that I would probably live to see the twenty-first century. It seemed fantastically distant and I didn’t want to think about being that old.
Mrs. Rice, btw, lived in Washington DC during the Civil War and had seen Abe Lincoln in person several times. She was a tiny little girl at the time, but you don’t forget something like that, ever. She also told me, a little later, that I might be one of the very last people alive who actually knew someone who had seen the great Lincoln with their own eyes. Lincoln has been dead 155 years now, and I am still here, so it could very well be. Mrs. Rice herself passed in 1960, aged 100.

Teddy's Person  Jul 15, 2020 • 10:50:34am

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said Tuesday that she would lift a hold on more than 1,100 senior military promotions after the Department of Defense assured her that it did not block the promotion of Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman — a key witness in the impeachment inquiry of President Trump.

Duckworth, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and combat veteran, put the hold on promotions earlier this month, demanding written confirmation from Defense Secretary Mike Esper that the former National Security Council aide had been recommended for advancement to full colonel. Watching how the number of people wearing masks jumped after Abbott finally issued his order, it really points that most people still rely on authority figures to tell them what they need to do. Most people, even during the pandemic, aren’t paying attention like we are.

Seen on Facebook.

I knew it would eventually happen and today it did. I was prepared. I came out of the Dollar Store with my mask on and keeping six feet distance to everyone, pushed my cart to my car, all the while wearing my mask. A woman was getting out of her car next to me with no mask. As I’m putting groceries into my car she says, “Let me guess - you’re a liberal. Cause that mask ain’t gonna do anything for you except make you look stupid .” In anticipation of this happening, because I figured it might someday, I already had a response ready. I said “Look, I woke up with a temperature of 102 this morning (I didn’t) plus I work around hundreds of people in close quarters (I don’t) so this is for your protection, not mine. How about I take it off and we hug like old friends?” I stepped toward her and acted as if I was taking off my mask. She stepped back away from me and went across to the next row of cars. I followed her, she kept walking away, I chased her, she ran… She fell down. I grabbed her foot. I pulled on her leg, just as I’m pulling yours.

I L’d OL.

There’s probably a couple of aspects to this:

1. the people who think “well, the folks in government are on top of this, if they say we don’t need them, then we probably don’t”
2. the people who will reluctantly go along with it to avoid a ticket or whatever consequence comes from violating it
3. some partisanship/tribalism thing where the guy on “your side” signals that it is acceptable to act in a certain way
4. the people who aren’t as tuned in as we are

It’s Republicans who refuse to follow mask orders unless they are issued by a Republican authority figure they respect. The Trump-cult ignores such orders from Democratic governors.

Geraldo Rivera Blasts Judge for Denying Bail to Ghislaine Maxwell: She ‘Chickened Out’

“I think this was a political decision,” Rivera said. “I agree absolutely that the question is not whether she committed these hideous offenses. The question is whether or not she would show up for trial.”

Rivera, who is also an attorney, pointed to Maxwell’s recent purchase of a New Hampshire home to argue that she “went to all this trouble to stay in the country” and yet she’s still being sent to a detention center that’s a “hotbed of COVID-19.”
“I think that if you take her passport, you put the ankle bracelet on her, she owns property now, she could have led this country long ago if she was so inclined,” he added. “Now to keep her there in solitary confinement, essentially for over a year awaiting trial, they are doing this to put pressure on her, the federal prosecutors.”

Then, in a similar vein as former Epstein lawyer and friend Alan Dershowitz, Rivera offered up a defense of the accused sex trafficker.

“They are punishing her before conviction,” he grumbled. “She has never been held liable in a civil suit, never been convicted of a crime. She is not Jeffrey Epstein.”

Rivera would go on to insist that Maxwell wasn’t necessarily hiding from the law over the past year but instead was running from the press, saying she was one of the “most sought after tabloid figures in the country.”
