So this post-Christian-ization of the US is going pretty much how I expected it - horribly.

It’s my long-standing assertion that what we have here in this country is a battle that arises from a world-view collapse.

That while Christian Europe went through its crises with WWI and WWII, which resulted in the disestablishing of Christianity as a major force in western Europe (and parts of eastern Europe), the US went through the first half of the 20th century cocooned with its 18th century worldview.

But the cold war took its toll, and the 1960’s brought about not only a sexual revolution but Vietnam, both of which contributed to the dynamics of the following decades.

Now, with Trump, who the fundamentalists declare is God’s chosen one, we see that the religion of American fundamentalism is just naked power hoarding. This was very clear in the Civil War era too, what with southern denominations forming from splitting off of previously nation-wide denominations.

But the momentum of religion is such that Americans by and large didn’t let the Civil War move them from their foundational world view.

That the youth of today do not believe being gay is sinful, that the idea of “hell” is silly, etc. is the surest sign that the old American religious culture is now past the tipping point.

However, the old pharisees are not going quietly. They have decided that if they can’t control everything then they’ll burn down what they can.

And this is why you see the GOP clinging to such mind-numbing notions that wearing face masks during a pandemic is wrong. Not just that individual nuts are screaming about it, but that leaders are trying to make Trump’s delusions into policy. GA’s governor is just the latest example.

Again, the old order is not going to go quietly. They will fight to impose an authoritarian regime as a last resort. And if you don’t think that is true, look to parts of eastern Europe where the Orthodox church still has weight and how that has impacted democracy in those areas. Russia is example number one.

I don’t know what to make of these claims regarding Oregon and vans. On the one hand it sounds like a Qanon level bit of absurdity. OTOH, I can’t rule it out in the era of Trump.

A couple of threads down someone mentioned the last chapter of The Sheep Look Up by the British science/speculative fiction writer, John Brunner. It is indeed brutal. But this is the poem by John Milton, on which the novel is based:

The hungry sheep look up, and are not fed,
But, swoln with wind, and the rank mist they draw,
Rot inwardly, and foul contagion spread.

That’s a pretty good description of the Trumpettes.

Oh, his best book, by the way, is Stand on Zanzibar.

In my opinion, of course.

So I started watching videos on the Youtube channel of a DUI attorney in KY because the Almighty Algorithm said I might find them interesting. After watching a few where he managed to get people out of a DUI charge by either destroying the testimony of cops or showing prosecutors as morons, I thought he might be worth following.

But because of the little feature Youtube has where you can see social posts made by Youtubers to their channels appearing on the main page, that plan has gone out the window. Why? Because while he might be well-versed in the law, he’s a mask “truther” and I ain’t got time for that shit.

All we’re really seeing is the result of everybody in society having a personal recording device handy at all times. Most of these incidents happened before the era of camera phones and social media, it’s just that back then it was a “they said/they said” situation every time that revealed more about the racial bias of the listeners than the people involved.

Bonus options:

2. Talk about building hundreds of miles of wall on the border, when only 3 miles of wall have been built where no barrier previously existed. A mile a year. At a time when Mexicans don’t want to come to the US because it’s safer to remain at home to avoid covid19.

This, uh….seems like a big fucking deal.

Europe’s highest court ruled on Thursday that a transatlantic data transfer deal is invalid because of concerns about U.S. surveillance in a decision that could disrupt thousands of companies that rely on the agreement.

The ruling, which cannot be appealed, effectively ends the privileged access companies in the United States had to personal data from Europe and puts the country on a similar footing to other nations outside the 27-country bloc.

The so-called Privacy Shield was set up in 2016 by Washington and Brussels to protect personal data when it is sent to the United States for commercial use after a previous agreement known as Safe Harbour was ruled invalid in 2015.

More than 5,000 companies have signed up to use the Privacy Shield. The case was triggered by a long-running dispute between Facebook and Austrian privacy activist Max Schrems who shot to fame for his role in overturning Safe Harbour.

Facebook had no immediate comment.

So the woman who tried to get a Starbucks barista fired when he insisted on her wearing a mask is now intent on suing Starbucks and the barista.

The barista got a gofundme of over $100k after the episode.

This is the height of entitlement, where this woman claims that she’s got asthma and other health conditions preventing her from wearing a mask.

Hey, numbnuts. If you’ve got all these medical conditions, you shouldn’t go out at all because of the risk of contracting covid19 is even greater than for someone in good health. And none of the health conditions she claims to have make it medically necessary to avoid masking up.

If you have asthma that isn’t controlled, you shouldn’t be out. Masking up doesn’t prevent you from breathing. It doesn’t drop your O2 levels. Heck, there were a couple of doctors who showed that even if you wear six layers of masks that it does precisely 0 to your O2 levels.

A hand-written note from a chiropractor, asthma “diagnosed” by a GYN. As I said yesterday, someone should tell her the mask isn’t meant for her cooch (and as someone else said, perhaps we found the wife of the “his mask gave him Chlamydia” dude).

These people are nuts.

“One of them, I get shortness of breath, dizziness and it messes with the heartbeat,” she said. “And I do have asthma as well, and I do get maskne. So there’s several things going on and not only that but it doesn’t even work.”

She did share two pieces of paperwork to show what she calls a medical exemption.

This 2015 doctors report she shared shows analysis of her uterus and an ovarian cyst.

And this hand-written note with a San Diego chiropractor’s letterhead that she asked us not to show says she has quote “underlying health conditions that prevent her from wearing a mask.”

They are overthinking it: Trump was terrified and turned into a deer in the headlights at the thought that his highly-leveraged properties would lose their revenue streams and might have to default on their loans to China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, etc…

That is why he created the slush fund, so that money could find its way through shell companies to pay off his loans, the bone he tossed to the unemployed was just a distraction from the mass of oversight-free corporate prime rib he was doling out.

Russian ratfuckers going to ratfuck:

CNN - Russian cyber actors are targeting organizations involved in coronavirus vaccine development, according to a new warning by US, UK and Canadian security officials on Thursday that details activity by a Russian hacking group called APT29, which also goes by the name “the Dukes” or “Cozy Bear.”/em>

An advisory published by the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) details activity by the Russian hacking group and explicitly calls out efforts to target US, UK and Canadian vaccine research and development organizations.

“APT29’s campaign of malicious activity is ongoing, predominantly against government, diplomatic, think tank, healthcare and energy targets to steal valuable intellectual property,” a press release on the advisory said.

Cozy Bear is one of two hacking groups linked to Russian intelligence that is believed to have accessed the Democratic National Committee’s internal systems in the lead-up to the 2016 US election, but Thursday’s announcement is the first time this group has been named in connection to cyberattacks related to the coronavirus pandemic.

LA lizards and ordinary citizens await tomorrow’s word from the Mayor or Governor. Leaks/rumors (?) say Los Angeles will tighten up further. Full Stay at Home is said to be on the table at 3 week duration. Businesses are bracing, employees are scared either way.

That would not be any surprise. The NFL is only occasionally a progressive place (Green Bay under Lombardi forex). But just watching the Washington Team for the past few years shows how even more ugly than most they are.

The Pitchforks Are Coming… For Us Plutocrats

And so I have a message for my fellow filthy rich, for all of us who live in our gated bubble worlds: Wake up, people. It won’t last.

If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.

They are asking people to risk their lives for the economy. Not for freedom or liberty or human rights, but to ensure that no member of the 1% has to part with any of the 40% of America that they own.

We have a long history of putting property over people, capital over labor.

They offer the argument that “people also die of poverty”. They do not die of poverty: they die for lack of food, shelter and medical care - because our society sees the poor as unworthy of access to those things.

Isn’t it likely that Trump’s handling of the pandemic is guided by advice from his BFF Putin? Putin has probably explained to him that he has kept the case rate low by not doing widespread testing — and that the mortality rate is also much lower than it would be because magically — no test, no death from Covid-19!

Of course, we also have the mysterious billionaire (not Trump since it is a real billionaire) mentioned in a tweet posted here the other day which basically said that to keep the rapacious capitalism in control, we can’t afford to worry about peasant lives. The Deval Dan Patrick philosophy that he would happily sacrifice his life (well, not really his, but that of minorities and the poor) in order that the current economic order remain intact, instead of being slightly redesigned to benefit all.

Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, which runs one of the most popular third-party coronavirus data dashboards, said the policy change won’t impact the Hopkins site because they’ve managed to source their data directly from states. She added, however, that the policy change raises questions about the transparency of the data and the role of the CDC in the ongoing U.S. response.

Given our federal system, I would assume that reporting would be handled on a state-by-state basis, which means that lying GOP-run states might conceal their statewide information — but then it’s certainly possible that other sources can gather and accumulate the data on a very local level

time for the periodic rerun of Nick Hanauer’s warning:

When I was young and first seriously studied the French Revolution, I was horrified at the savagery of the Paris mob and did not understand how people could be so brutal. I am still horrified today, but I understand it a lot better.

re: #178 lawhawk

If you read the story it says he deleted his account.
Either, either, or. Gone.
From the story.

Chuck Woolery has taken his game show and gone home.

The former host of “Love Connection,” outspoken right winger and supporter of Donald Trump has deleted his Twitter account after losing a war on the social media site.

Earlier this week, Woolery tweeted that, essentially, everyone was lying about COVID 19, “The CDC, media, Democrats, our Doctors” were all lying to make sure Trump lost the election.

Trump immediately re-Tweeted Woolery’s Tweet, basically agreeing with him and throwing Dr. Fauci and every right thinking person under the bus.

Ah, but that wasn’t all. Because the next day Woolery backtracked. The reason? His son, he said, had tested positive for the virus. “Covid-19 is here and it is real,” he said, contradicting his entire prior Tweet. And his whole philosophy. I wrote about that tweet, and many people– including me– sent well wishes to his son.

But not Donald Trump. He never again commented on Woolery or cared what happened to his son. He was too busy blaming the Chinese, Hunter Biden, and a runaway bat for his problems. He fired Brad Parscale as his campaign manager.

A lot of Tweeters thought maybe Woolery’s account was suspended. But Twitter would have marked it as such. No, the account is gone. Chuck has lost the game. He did not make a Covid Connection after all. He goes home empty handed, with the consolation that he can still admit his stupidity and beg for forgiveness.

Eclectic Cyborg  Jul 16, 2020 • 9:26:32am

You know why Covid-19 has hit us so bad? I mean, yes Trumps mismanagement IS the primary cause, but it’s more than that…

It’s because we have a not insignificant percentage of people who trust Rush Limbaugh and Fox News over medical experts

It’s because we have a fucking joke of a social safety net that barely worked before Covid-19 and is now buckling under the pressure. Other developed countries didn’t hesitate to extend extra benefits to their citizens through the end of the year AT LEAST. Our extra benefits will be gone fourteen days from now.

It’s because we have a fucking joke of a healthcare system that puts profits over people and it too was not functioning well pre-pandemic and is starting to buckle.

It’s because we de-prioritized funding things like public health, education and infrastructure for too damned long while throwing gobs and gobs of money at the military.

It’s because individualism has become so damn toxic in this country that we are killing each other over something as simple as wearing a fucking mask.

It’s because far too many of us are so damn selfish they don’t even give a shit about helping others.

I could go on, but I think I’ve made the point. Yes, I’m fucking angry today. I’ve been in this country just over 12 years now and never have wished more that I was back in Canada as I do right this moment.

But I’m staying my ass put, because this country needs good people. People who will help clean up the mess after the Trump.

Quite true: but truth (as we have had all-too-many opportunities to note since 2016) is even less relevant in politics than ever. At least as far as Trump and the Republicans are concerned (IMO): They are looking at a notably unpopular President with atrocious polling numbers, in the middle of a deadly national pandemic with no end (or even curtailment) in sight, and little or nothing to offer the voting public. Outside, of course, of hysterical - and racist - scaremongering. And trying to paint Joe Biden as some senile dement is only par for the GOP course: of course it going to be flogged relentlessly by the RWNM: they’ve got nothing else. And would probably do it anyway, if Trump were up by similar margins. Smear, fear, and insult: it’s the Republican Way….

And would probably do it anyway, if Trump were up by similar margins. Smear, fear, and insult: it’s the Republican Way….

They have nothing.

I don’t think KHive made much of an impact even on DK. I don’t mean Harris and those that support her - including me - that constantly pushed for her, but some group known as KHive. I suspect there are a number of people who don’t want her, and some of them because of who she is, but the internet is a big place, and it’s still not the real world.

I still remember a conversation that I had with my parents, grandparents’ best friends, their son, & his wife. We all agreed that while Biden wouldn’t be our first choice, we wouldn’t rule him out either. Between us, there’s people who have been voting Democratic since the 50’s. The online crowd might be loud but they’re not effective. I actually think Biden given our set of circumstances is the most optimal candidate we could have nominated though I do think Harris got a raw deal.

And once again the Corrupted Court engages in voter suppression!

washingtonpost.com

The U.S. Supreme Court declined on Thursday to weigh in on a federal appeals court’s decision that blocked some Florida felons’ eligibility to participate in elections — a major blow to efforts to restore voting rights to as many as 1.4 million people in the battleground state.

Lawyers with the Campaign Legal Center in Washington petitioned the high court in early July after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in Atlanta temporarily blocked a judge’s order that had cleared the way for hundreds of thousands of felons in the state to register to vote.

The organization argued that the appeals court decision had “thrown the election rules into chaos.”

But on Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court denied the request to lift the order. Three liberal justices dissented, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor writing that the court’s decision “prevents thousands of otherwise eligible voters from participating in Florida’s primary election simply because they are poor.”

FUCK THE COURT! BIDEN MUST PUSH TO EXPAND THE COURT FROM 9 TO 15 AND PACK IT!

Biden’s advantage right now is that he cannot be redefined. And he knows how to stay out of the way.

Sotomayor’s dissent is very well reasoned and it make little sense for the Court of Appeal to stay a permanent injunction after it allowed a preliminary injunction to continue in place and the trial court finding that plaintiffs’ satisfied all their burdens of proof.

Without seeing the Court of Appeal decision, or knowing the issue on appeal, this seems like a very bad decision. But I suspect a lot of it has to do more with procedural issues than the constitutional issues at play.

Texas State GOP Convention:

Some topical platform planks that will be debated by the Permanent Platform Committee, scheduled to meet Thursday evening, are as follows:

“203 - Pandemic Response: We call upon Texas elected officials to never again implement mass lockdowns on the people of Texas in the name of communicable disease response. Texas officials shall never again dare to presume that they know best how to medically treat Texans or prioritize the medical treatment of Texans. Elected officials must never make command and control edicts that dictate to health care providers how to do their job.”

“178. Contact Tracing: We strongly oppose contact tracing, tracking, or surveillance, and we also strongly oppose any action similar to the federal TRACE Act. Contract tracing, tracking, or surveillance are not core functions of public health. No government entity, nor private entity, nor combination thereof, nor the Texas National Guard, shall ever be employed to violate the natural rights of Texans. “

“219.Gender Identity Pronouns: We oppose any attempt to criminalize and/or penalize anyone for the wrong use of pronouns.”

Politicizing public health response, Jade Helm style.
And standing up for their rights to bash transgender people.
Priorities!

My RWNJ brother periodically tries that on us and I just respond that that the choice is between Biden and Hitler and I’m not voting for Hitler. There are manipulated videos and videos out of context that he desperately tries to get us to watch; unfortunately, there are naive people out there who are not particularly interested in politics and who potentially can be swayed by these arguments.

Or, often, they are just looking for an excuse to vote for Hitler (or at least the Nazis) since they like what (they think) the Nazis are doing.

Twitch forces U.S. Army to stop tricking viewers with fake giveaways

The U.S. Army has a Twitch channel that it uses to fish for potential recruits. Last week, it came under fire for issuing bans to viewers who asked about war crimes. This week, a report by The Nation dug deeper, pointing out, among other things, that the channel had a habit of running fake controller giveaways that redirected viewers to a recruitment page. Following widespread scrutiny, Twitch says it’s forced the Army to stop.

According to The Nation, the giveaways—which took place “repeatedly” in chat—offered viewers a chance to win an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller. Clicking the associated link, however, would send viewers to a recruitment page “with no additional mention of a contest, odds, total number of winners, or when a drawing will occur.”

Upon learning of this yesterday, Twitch viewers and streamers reacted with disbelief.
