Time to Sound the Alarm: Unidentified Federal Agents in Unmarked Cars Are Arresting Portland Protesters

US News • Views: 31,990

Meanwhile, in Portland, Oregon, unidentified men in military fatigues with generic “POLICE” labels are driving around in unmarked vans and snatching protesters off the streets.

We’re at the point where Trump is sending his own personal goon squads into cities to terrorize demonstrators.

Seems like people should be more than a little alarmed at this development.

When several men in green military fatigues and generic “police” patches sprang out of an unmarked gray minivan in front of Mark Pettibone in the early hours of Wednesday morning, his first instinct was to run.

He did not know whether the men were police or far-right extremists, who frequently don military-like outfits and harass left-leaning protesters in Portland, Ore. The 29-year-old resident said he made it about a half-block before he realized there would be no escape.

Then, he sank to his knees, hands in the air.

“I was terrified,” Pettibone told The Washington Post. “It seemed like it was out of a horror/sci-fi, like a Philip K. Dick novel. It was like being preyed upon.”

He was detained and searched. One man asked him if he had any weapons; he did not. They drove him to the federal courthouse and placed him in a holding cell. Two officers eventually returned to read his Miranda rights and ask if he would waive those rights to answer a few questions; he did not.

And almost as suddenly as they had grabbed him off the street, the men let him go.

Yeah, this needs to be nipped in the bud now. ACLU and other legal organizations will hopefully begin the legal processes. I am hoping people can find and photograph the fake cops and ID them, they need to be exposed. I want to know who they are, who they work for and who is signing their paychecks.

Funny, as soon as they face the prospect of dealing with lawyers and going before a judge, they let people go…

That only works as long as you make it to a recognized holding facility. Baby steps.

Absolutely. If you - or anyone else - is ever arrested by the cops, dummy up. Under no circumstances talk to the police or any law enforcement authority without a lawyer present.

Just keep repeating, “I want a lawyer” over and over and over again.

The next time this happens, those “cops” will just “take someone up the road”, and a body will be found in the woods somewhere. The “real” cops, who are covering for the fake cops, will just say that “this incident was not random”. There will be a blurb on page 14. Done.

All they got is fear of “the other” with lots of shadowy, dark commercials with scary music. It used to work, and it will on the tiny minority that’s stuck somewhere in Jim Crow land. But there are a lot more of us than them. We have a fight ahead of us, but it’s not hopeless, not yet at least.

lawhawk  Jul 17, 2020 • 11:20:04am

Not just armed cops, but heavily armed riot cops who intend to smash and do damage to anyone who resists.

That’s the point. They are itching for a fight, because it’d guarantee Trump the headlines he craves.

They’ve sent out the jack booted thugs that the right wing always claims would come for them - to go after people for engaging in graffiti. Graffiti.

That’s usually handled as a summons, not even a misdemeanor. They want to assert their law and order credentials by going after people tagging stuff. All it does is that it shows Trump’s a tinpot dictator trying to hold on to power at any cost (including shredding the Constitution).

Know what worries me more at this point than losing RBG before Election Day?

Clarence Thomas resigning.

Hear me out: if Biden wins, Thomas knows he’s in for a rough time ahead. RBG will be replaced by a much younger justice who’s just as liberal. And he knows if HE dies or decides to retire in the next four (8?) years, his seat will also go to a young liberal justice.

And so on November 9, he hands Trump his resignation. Ginni’s RWNJ backers already have his wingnut welfare set up for the rest of his life.

Maybe Mitch is a total lame duck now, or maybe he’s just lost the majority. Either way, he has no scruples and no fucks left to give, so he fast tracks Trump’s immediate nomination of a replacement through committee and to a Senate vote in early December.

Does he get 51 votes at that point? Susan Collins might also be a lame duck. Will her “concern” be strong enough to push her to vote no. Will a freshly re-elected Ben Sasse stand up for principle over partisan opportunity? Lisa Murkowski is two years away from reelection. How will that affect her decision? Would a lame-duck Lamar Alexander stand up and vote no to give himself a place in history?

It could get incredibly ugly. I’m afraid of ALL of the ratfucking that can happen in the 10 weeks between election and inauguration, but especially of this scenario.

not that everyone knows the CDC info is ‘compromised’, the info sources - hospitals, states etc, will probably give their info direct to private entities - ie johns hopkins et al. White house cant touch that.

mrs dm’s mom and dad are in an independent senior living facility

mom wrote some limericks:

In front of my PC I’ll sit
A couple more limericks I’ve writ
I’ll cherish each rhyme
I have lots of time
‘Cause I just never learned how to knit.

I’d love to have a small date
And stay out incredibly late
Eat out. Would be great
But I can’t. What I hate
Is meals from a bag; not a plate.

I’m surrounded by sweetness and light
Positive thoughts day and night
“Share” and “Reach out”
When I just want to shout
Give me some lamb chops to bite
Or more awful poems I shall write …
Is the end very nearly in sight?

she just turned 90
stay tuned,
she wrote more

Yeah, there were a lot of assholes back then, and it’s possible that someone who commented at LGF may have harassed this guy. But it was not something that came from me and if I’d known about it I would have stopped it, even then.

In 2002, the blog software was so primitive that it quickly became impossible to police everything. As I began writing the software myself and had better tools to keep track of what was happening in the comments, I just reached the point where the only way to deal with it was a complete house-cleaning.

Ah yes. The year of the flounce. Stinky and his ban hammer had a very busy year. Wasn’t that also the year you closed the lounge?

Forget Tim Scott. He’s the Clarence Thomas of the Senate. Hoping he follows Lindsay out the door when his term is up in 2022.

I dunno: if Lindsay Graham gets the axe this November, I’m guessing the SC (and national) GOP is going to move heaven and earth to keep him in his seat (hopefully fruitlessly, but who knows?). They’re not going to want to lose their last (sole) Black Republican if they can help it.

But looking at the chart of Senators up in 2022, it’s still not a good prospect for Republicans: they will have 22-23 seats to defend, vs. just 12 Democrats (most from solidly-“blue” states).

Wouldn’t that just be a conservative justice being replaced by a conservative justice? Wouldn’t change the current balance of SCOTUS.

A conservative justice who could be around for another 40 years. Thanks to McConnell, we have a conservative court. The election of Biden is now the only hope of getting a Court that will support progressive values, and that can happen only if one of the conservative justices is replaced. The 2 oldest justices by far are RBG and Breyer. Biden’s election will prevent any further deterioration in judicial decisions but won’t provide any improvement either.

Trump spewed bulkshit about how Biden and Bernie’s compact says that it calls for defunding the police. Wallace called him out for that explicitly. Trump said to go ahead and get the compact. He had his staffers get it for him. He then rattled off nonsense unrelated to the claim about defunding the police, and never found anything about defunding the police because it doesn’t exist.

Wallace and Fox didn’t include that bit - where Trump failed to find any evidence - but should have.

here’s a couple more

“Be good”, That’s what we’ve been taught
But sometimes, maybe we ought
To bitch and to moan
About staying at home
There’s a limit to positive thought!

On our face we must wear a hot mask
Or we shall be taken to task
If you leave through the gate
And come home much too late
At Pete’s pearly gates you may bask.

If you want to shop at the mall
Or buy a sweet treat, oh so small
You could come back infected
And go undetected
An untimely death for us all

I’m surrounded by sweetness and light
To keep my days sunny and bright
“Reach out” and “Share”
But I’m watching my hair
As it daily grows longer and white

ain’t she a peach?

this story means parscale may have been skimming from trump

President Trump’s reelection campaign is conducting an internal review of spending irregularities overseen by Brad Parscale, the recently-demoted 2020 campaign manager, Business Insider reports.

“Trump’s anger at Parscale has been building since last year after he learned his campaign manager was living a lavish lifestyle built off riches he’d made working for the president.”

this story means trump and his network wont have to prove all the money they skimmed from the government through the PPP was actually spent on payroll etc.

“Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin suggested Friday that the government should consider forgiving all taxpayer-backed small loans under the federal Paycheck Protection Program without verifying how the funds were used, a decision that could wipe away debt for millions of small businesses but would also substantially increase the risk of fraud,” the Washington Post reports.

I’ve found that the only way to reach some of these people is for them to actually do the heavy lifting themselves…
if they believe that climate change is real, then look up who has passed legislation to address it and then do the same for every issue that supposedly matters to them..

if that’s too much bother then guess what, they prefer to remain ignorant, if they’re sincere they’ll find out what is what and can then make an informed decision.

Just “telling” these people doesn’t work, they have to do the work themselves, its the only way for them to understand it.

As usual, Republicans push “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

They don’t want 1918 comparisons because anybody who completed a public high school history class has heard of it. And for those too young to have taken that class, or it was so long ago they forgot… Google has a LOT about it. And there’s documentaries easily accessible on-line.

Also, the reason Trump keeps saying 1917 instead of 1918, no matter how many times anybody corrects him… is because 1917 was the Russian Revolution. The country’s entire system of governance was turned upside down. Steve Bannon calls himself a Leninist, dismantling the administrative state was his oft-stated goal from day one.

this story means trump and his network wont have to prove all the money they skimmed from the government through the PPP was actually spent on payroll etc.

The Lincoln Project ad on Parscale clearly got under Trump’s nerves. They know what they’re doing, at least when it comes to infuriating Trump.

Re the second story: I hope there is some way for the House to intervene. Trump steals whenever he has the chance, and there is no doubt the Mnuchin aided in major level theft. But then Mnuchin, the foreclosure king, had a lot of experience in stealing from little people.

re: #44 Charles Johnson

Naked Capitalism has a different take on this…

.Let me begin by listing the headlines, in order of increasing hysteria:

Coronavirus data is funneled away from CDC, sparking worries AP
Transparency questions after hospitals directed to report COVID data to HHS, not CDC ABC
Trump Administration Orders Hospitals To Bypass CDC, Send COVID-19 Data To Washington NPR
Trump administration takes control of COVID-19 data in US Al Jazeera
Coronavirus hospital data will now be sent to Trump administration instead of CDC CNN
Headlines 3, 4, and 5 are wrong, in that they imply that the CDC is not part of the Trump Adminstration. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as a glance at its About Page shows, is part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and hence part of the Trump administration. The CDC is no sense an independent agency like the SEC or the FAA, and hence is politicized, or not, as any other portion of the executive branch; such independence as its “scientific experts” and other personnel may have is due solely to the Norms Fairy, and is in no way the result of statutes or regulations. (That may be a bad thing, but it is so.)

In institutional terms, for collecting and aggregating COVID data, the administration has phased out the CDC system (National Healthcare Safety Network, or NHSN) in favor of the HHS Protect[1] system (produced by TeleTracking Technologies Inc. of Pittburgh, PA). In this post I will first compare and contrast the two systems; despite the hysteria, I think there’s a prima facie case for the administration doing what it did, because TeleTracking[2] has better tech. I have priors from past lives where I worked in and with companies like TeleTracking, especially on the data side — which is not at all easy — so I feel I know where I am; that said, it’s hard to dope out the contractual relation between HHS and TeleTracking from the news reports, so at times I will have to speculate.) In an Appendix, just for fun, I’ll look at the CDC under Obama. It will be evident that the CDC has had problems — not necessarily of its own making — for some time, long before its COVID testing debacle in 2020.

So much for the Saudi angle:

The executive assistant to tech CEO and investor Fahim Saleh was charged Friday with second-degree murder in his boss’s grisly slaying and dismemberment, the NYPD said.

Tyrese Haspil, 21, was busted at 8:45 a.m. in the lobby of 172 Crosby St. in Manhattan, Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said during a brief news conference at 1 Police Plaza.

Haspil handled Saleh’s “finances and personal matters,” Harrison said.

“It is also believed that he owed the victim a significant amount of money,” he said.

PR is getting some problem children:

Man spits on grocery store worker who asked him to wear a mask — and immediately gets hit in the face: police

A tourist staying in Puerto Rico allegedly spit on a grocery store employee who asked him to put on his face mask — and then wound up getting hit right in the face.

Univision reports that police say a man named William Martin Drew went to an Econo grocery store in Rincón, Puerto Rico on Tuesday night while wearing a mask that was dangling around his neck and not covering his face.

When an employee asked the man to put it on, police say the man became aggressive and spat on him — after which he got hit in the face by a security guard.

A bit of a nitpick, as Martin W Drew isn’t a tourist, but an expat living in the Island. Several days earlier he had posted a video stating that he wouldn’t be nice if he was asked again to use the mask.

This is the second major incident I’ve heard here. Last week two American tourists were asked to use the masks inside a store, threw a tantrum and caused over $2,000 in damages (it was a very expensive store, in a very exclusive mall).

I haven’t heard locals causing much problems. If they don’t want to use the mask, they just go away grumbling.

Now, I know being more isolated certainly helps, and locking down as tightly on a country of 330MM is certainly more daunting, but the big thing was that everyone got on board with the science, the executive orders, and the recommendations. The entire exercise was viewed as patriotic team event. They weren’t dripping with scientifically illiterate assholes complaining about masks, haircuts, and golfing. Federal law enforcement officers need to think long and hard about exactly who the enemy is. Right wing militias routinely threaten federal employees, including law enforcement, and their boogaloo terrorist element has already assassinated federal officers. In a few months, federal officers could find themselves under massive attack by the same Trump cultists who are cheering them on now, indeed, giving them their orders. In fact, I wonder if the current snatch operations are intended to facilitate kidnappings by right wing terrorists, ie by making people less likely to resist unidentified assailants.

“…As noted above, the Oregon statute that authorizes federal law enforcement officers to enforce Oregon law requires the officer to identify their authority and their reason for making the arrest. It does not seem like a stretch to interpret that provision to require an officer to at least identify themselves (1) as a federal law enforcement officer; if not (2) as an employee of a specific federal agency with law enforcement authority. That doesn’t mean that these officers must wear uniforms or drive marked vehicles, but it shouldn’t be remotely controversial to require federal officers, when making arrests, to make it clear to those whom they are arresting why they have the legal authority to do so.”

What’s amazing is how flustered Trump immediately gets when someone pushes back on something he said. You could just see his blood pressure rising.

I’m sure it was compounded by the fact that a Fox News employee was not groveling at his feet.

Last night on Maddow, Mary Trump said he does get discombobulated whenever anyone pushes back.
sounds to me like a fun thing for people to do.
and often
