Biggest difference between 1918 and 2020? Unlike Wilson, Trump doesn’t have the excuse of waging a world war to explain why he’s doing all of jack and shit about the pandemic.

There’s a lot of shit that Wilson got away with (even if only for a short while) in the name of fighting a world war that Trump could only dream of. Warrantless wiretaps are shocking, but imagine government censors reading your mail for signs of “dissent”? And I don’t mean soldiers mail, I mean John Q Public finding out he’s suddenly facing criminal charges of “dissent” because he questioned the need for soldiers in Afghanistan.

On the New Abnormal today Wilson and Jong-Fast were talking about the dumb men in this administration including Peter Navarro who is, was, and always will be on board with “herd immunity”. I haven’t finished the pod, but basically: the debate at this point is whether the Trump administration is made up of more dumb smart guys or dumb dumb guys. My bet is on the latter, but the odds probably aren’t that good.

How I use (some of) my time in solitary. Completed another model kit. This is a PM 1/72 Spitfire V floatplane. There were only 6 Spitfire floatplanes for the very good reason that there was no use for them by the time they were ready. It was the fastest seaplane of the time (370 mph), and quite possibly the best looking, though.
The kit was simple, almost primitive, but I still had some trouble with the build, especially with the paint. As you can see it is quite small. I am working myself up to some of the mega-model projects I have, like the giant Saturn V, which is the same scale but comes out to over 5 feet in height when finished.

She told me she’d let it go as long as I could honestly say I didn’t believe her. I thought my teacher was full of shit as I was good in math. Since I knew this was a good candidate for the above mentioned fix I had the customer wait while I popped the bottom off, cleaned his two memory modules with an eraser and then tested it. Success! I put the base cover back on, sold him on a new battery and SSD upgrade (he’ll return when the parts are in), charged him $20 and sent him on his merry way.

For all the talk about how there’s all this lawlessness in Portland by protesters, where exactly are the arrests and court proceedings to administer those charges?

Turns out there isn’t much there. 18 arrests this week by US jack booted thugs not counting those this morning.

..the action comes as U.S. agents have arrested 18 people in Portland this week as the clash with protesters turned chaotic for another night.

The number doesn’t include arrests made early Friday, when federal officers again used tear gas to force thousands of demonstrators from crowding around a U.S. courthouse, a target of two months of nightly protests. Protesters projected lasers on the building and tried to take down a security fence. They scattered as clouds of gas rose up and agents fired crowd control munitions, which critically injured a demonstrator this month.

The protesters who were arrested face federal charges including assaulting federal officers, arson and damaging federal property, U.S. Attorney Billy J. Williams said. All the defendants are local, and they were released after making a court appearance.

18. That’s not widespread violence. That’s a showing of just how pathetic Trumpworld is in trying to portray this as widespread violence.

Sad to see, but I thought Facebook was policing Covid misinformation?

Just another one of those “everything is getting better, not worse” type of posts. I check out the originator… sure enough, a Ron Paul type.

The book that started* the 1619 Project - American Slavery, American Freedom - was published in 1975, two year before Tom Cotton was born. It’s still essential reading for anyone getting an advanced degree in American history.

Tom Cotton really does seem to have a bug (the size of Shelob’s grandmother) up his ass about the 1619 Project: he keeps going on and on about it. I’m sure the good Senator has his own notions of how the issues of racism, slavery and discrimination ought to be taught in American History - with the notion of “dismissal” prominent, I’m sure - but yeah, “cancel culture” to the max. Not made any better by the fact that it isn’t his culture……

Associated Press: “Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, a Democrat, quietly ordered the Lee statue and busts of generals J.E.B. Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and others removed from the historic Old House Chamber. A moving crew worked through the night Thursday — carefully removing the monuments and their plaques and loading them into a truck and taking them to an undisclosed location.”

“The stealth approach avoids the possibility of protests or a lawsuit to keep the monuments in place, but may prompt criticism that the monuments were moved without public discussion.”

It’s almost as if they are snatching people statues in the middle of the night, throwing them in unmarked vehicles, and stashing them in undisclosed locations.

I have a can of Deoxit on the shelf and have used it for years but the eraser trick followed by a wipe with Deoxit is far better than just applying Deoxit. I’ve done side-by-side tests that clearly show that the eraser method of cleaning is quicker and better. The Deoxit is the frosting on the cake. :)

I had a system come in last week with a wine spill. The owner cut the power and pulled the battery before the wine did any electrical damage. I ended up washing the motherboard in the sink to get the wine out from under the chips. A rinse in distilled water followed, then blown off with compressed air, a short soak in a pan of 99% isopropyl alcohol followed by one more blast of compressed air to dry it off. I placed in under a stream of warm, dry air for an hour, cleaned and wiped down all contacts with Deoxit and reassembled. Another save! :)

I’ve been fixing this stuff since the mid-80’s so I’ve accumulated a big bag of tricks.

Funny story about that: For years, teams accused the Minnesota Twins of piping fake crowd noise into the Metrodome, especially during playoff games. The Atlanta Braves were especially incensed during the 1991 World Series, the second series in which the home team won all 7 games - the first, of course, being the 1987 World Series… Which also went to the Minnesota Twins.

Save the rice for dinner! After your motherboard has had a nice hot, soapy bath in the sink and has been rinsed/blown off, a quick soak in 99% isopropyl will get the last bits of water out from under things. The alcohol will quickly evaporate when blown off with compressed air and the hour under a warm, dry stream of air will quickly evaporate the remainder.

When it comes to keyboards and liquids I just do three soaks and blowouts in 99% iso, followed by warm, dry air for a couple of hours. Works every time.

Mexico and Canada should also cooperate to massively reinforce their borders on those days to prevent overland escapes. I just got an email from the ACLU. I don’t think the ACLU had much about me other than public info and the email address I gave them…

We’re reaching out to let you know that the ACLU was notified of a security breach at one of our vendors, Blackbaud.

Blackbaud, which works with many nonprofits to support their fundraising and engagement efforts, was the target of a ransomware attack. As a result, the hackers obtained some personally identifying information about Blackbaud’s nonprofit clients’ donors and prospective donors, including those of the ACLU. Please note that no credit card or bank account information was compromised in this breach. A full description of the incident is available here. (note: this link will take you to a third party website, blackbaud.com)

Blackbaud believes they have successfully retrieved the stolen data, but we cannot be completely certain this is the case. The ACLU’s contractual agreements have always required Blackbaud to keep our constituent information confidential and to have security procedures in place to minimize breaches.

In all candor, we are frustrated with the lack of information we’ve received from Blackbaud about this incident thus far. The ACLU is doing everything in our power to ascertain the full nature of the breach, and we are actively investigating the nature of the data that was involved, details of the incident, and Blackbaud’s remediation plans.

“…the government maintained that what the agents did was lawful, and Cline’s explanation for that belief is the heart of the problem. It all comes back to that crucial word, “arrest.” DHS says pulling a man off the street and carrying him away in an unmarked van was just a “simple engagement.” “It was not a custodial arrest,” Cline said. In other words, the officers supposedly complied with the Fourth Amendment because, in Cline’s view, they didn’t need probable cause: There was no arrest, he says.

This assertion is glaringly wrong — and it has been for 40 years, since the Supreme Court’s 1979 opinion in Dunaway v. New York. In that case, the justices had to decide whether police officers violated the Fourth Amendment when, without probable cause, they took someone “into custody, transported him to the police station, and detained him there for interrogation.” Their answer, reaffirmed over the years, was unequivocal: Such conduct is “indistinguishable from a traditional arrest,” which need not be accompanied by bureaucratic processes like fingerprinting, booking or a formal arrest record to count as an arrest for purposes of the Fourth Amendment.”

Earlier today, I mentioned the hazards of flying in combat. I’ve come across a good database on the actual numbers. Helicopter Losses During the Vietnam War

6994 UH-1 Hueys served in Vietnam, of which about 3400, nearly half, were lost. A total of about 20,000 pilots flew Hueys, roughly half the chopper pilots who served in Vietnam. 1,151 UH-1 pilots and 1,231 non-pilot crew members were killed, about 5.5% of the total, and about 4% of all US war fatalities.

Army UH-1’s totaled 10,693,902 flight hours in the Vietnam War between October 1966 and the end of 1975. This is by far the highest combat flight time of any aircraft in history.

Drudge probably did an estimation of whether he’ll be more profitable pushing rightwing propaganda, or if he ought to be a more generic news aggregator.

While I think we’re nearing the end of the big-time success of the right-wing grift, it will always be with us. Just not as profitable as it has been the past 40 years.

Only because they have gone completely off the rails. Q is Republicans. Trump is Republicans. The majority of the crazy is Republicans - and not just rank and file but the elected officials.

That’s a losing proposition. That’s going down the Alex Jones road of being sued, being deplatformed where it matters and being shoved into the shadowy edges of the internet where there is little money and even less prestige.

This is all kinds of fucked up. Fire at Arizona Democratic Headquarters Was Arson, Police Say

A fire that destroyed part of the Arizona and Maricopa County Democratic Party headquarters was an act of arson, authorities said Friday.

Investigators were gathering surveillance video from nearby buildings after combing the wreckage and concluding the fire was human-caused, authorities said. Nobody was hurt.

Police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune declined to reveal what evidence convinced investigators the blaze was set, saying she doesn’t want to tip off the perpetrator.

“We are working through it. It’s very early on,” Fortune told reporters. “We do have some good video, we do have some information.”

I still think Soros and perhaps Nick Hanauer should get together and try to corner the executive jet charter reservations for November 4-5, to keep as many GOP dirtbags as possible from absconding to Russia. Mexico and Canada should also cooperate to massively reinforce their borders on those days to prevent overland escapes. I am not sure how to keep DeVos’s yacht from breaking out of port, other than perhaps limpet mines, and I am not well-versed in how to procure those.

There’s nothing preventing Trump from pardoning himself. NY could have nailed Trump and his older spawn at any time over the past 20 years, but law enforcement was too busy with petty crime and too willing to look away due to mid 5 figure ‘donations’. Maybe the spotlight will be too bright to let Donny slide this time, but I’d bet good money that he never sees the inside of a jail cell. Probably so. GOTV volunteers are working on a strategy for mass homelessness right now. Shelters can provide permanent addresses and that procedure has survived challenges before. A lot depends on the particular jurisdiction, since GOP officials will pull out all the stops to keep the evicted in particular from voting. agreed, all of this shit appears to be orchestrated (at least imho), Democratic headquarters in AZ torched, ginning up the urban rioting threat to coincide with a message that Joe Biden’s to blame for the lawlessness (implied) triggered by Trumps’s own escalation by sending in the goon squads and sowing even more nervousness and outrage trying to get his reichstag fire. The GOP going on vacation at exactly the time when unemployement benefits are expiring.

The Dems have a Hobson’s choice of sorts, while it’s great to say that they won’t sign off on anything that funds the HHS but the GOP won’t promote anything to Trump without it/ Just how do you think the media will present that to the masses? I can almost guarantee you that it won’t be that the Dems refused to give money to HHS, it will be framed as the Dems are condemning you all to die. JFC, if the NYT can run stories the day after AOC takes down Yoho as it being somehow her fault for being a bitch as opposed to the guy who started all of this shit unprovoked, I can guarandamn tee you Dems “defunding the police” would be exactly what Trump would love to crow about and justify the shit he’s going to do anyway but without the media cover.

It will be just another challenge in what is basically the front line of this struggle.

A lot of us have been working on getting out the vote since 2017. We’re not going anywhere, and we can handle this too. (If it comes to this. Someone pointed out, I think on MSNBC, that when the markets start reacting, Senate Repugs get real attentive real fast, even if it means they have to help the jobless. And the House bill is right there waiting for them.)

re: #195 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

A single engine Slick with a magnesium frame? What could go wrong?

When my dad got back from his second tour in the ‘Nam, he was assigned to command a Marine Reserve squadron at Dobbins AFB in Marietta, Ga.F-8 Crusaders on the jet side, UH-1 Slicks on the rotor side.

I went with him to work one day and we looked at the UH-1s. They were covered, inside and outside, with these little 2” x 2” riveted squares, in some cases dozens of them.

I looked at my dad, curious, “Battle patches”, he said, “each patch is a repair from where a round came through the helicopter.”

About six months later, one of his choppers threw a blade. Three dead. Metal fatigue, not detected as it came through depot. Didn’t matter, dad took the hit.

re: #240 I Would Prefer Not To

I don’t think Biden will have a choice. Democrats are pissed. If he doesn’t go after trump he loses his base. His AG will do his dirty work. Plus, once trump is removed from office and has no power more info is going to come out and none of it favors him. Biden may be reluctant, but his options will be limited.

also, it’s not like trump is going to keep silent about anything. He’s going to bait us to go after him, Yesa, he is that fucking stupid.

I suspect a lot of damaging information about Trump and his four-year tenure is going to be coming from the very people surrounding him today. If an AG under a Biden presidency aggressively pursues wrongdoing by the Trump administration, I think we’re going to see a lot of people spilling the beans, hoping to get some kind of plea deal so their prison time will be minimal.

The Republicans aren’t the only ones that can play delay of game: The tenants can try to run out the clock in housing court

True. In addition, a lot of landlords are going to be less likely than usual to evict since the chance of re-letting a cleared property is going to be very low. Additionally, a lot of normally Republican retirees depend on rental income and they, too, are not going to like having that spigot shut off. Big management corporations are a different story but it might be possible that even they can be made to act like human beings if the bottom line is not really going to be helped by tossing people into the street. Foreclosures are yet another story but the prospect of a less crook-friendly administration may have a healthy affect there.

re: #261 piratedan

agreed, all of this shit appears to be orchestrated (at least imho), Democratic headquarters in AZ torched, ginning up the urban rioting threat to coincide with a message that Joe Biden’s to blame for the lawlessness (implied) triggered by Trumps’s own escalation by sending in the goon squads and sowing even more nervousness and outrage trying to get his reichstag fire.

I’d be more worried about that if poll after poll hadn’t been showing that people simply aren’t listening to that crap anymore (the NYT “story” was an opinion piece, by the way).

Defaults on vehicle loans are another area that has to be considered. Humanitarian impulses are much lower than for housing, though in places like Texas a functioning vehicle is basically a matter of survival. Companies like GMAC would be taking a massive hit, with little or no chance of turning over the bloated inventory. They, too, may decide that it is better to let it ride for a while.

This seems like an accurate description of Trump:

This is what it means to elect an absolutely finished man—someone who cannot grow or care or even reconcile himself to any new thing—to a job like the presidency. Everything Trump does sounds the same, because whether it happens on Twitter or in the quintuple-byline newspaper stories about bleary behind-the-scenes White House upbraidings, it fundamentally is the same. Trump will always and only be upset about the same things in the same stupid way; he will stay mad about them even as the country shudders and cracks around him. It will never be any way but this for him, because Donald Trump will never be any way but this.

A finished man.

The obvious follow-up question, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen these stenographers even consider asking once, is “Then why not rename the bases for the heroes that served?” Of course, this would lead to the BS excuse we’ve seen before, which is that it would somehow “dishonor” the memories of those heroes if you changed the name of the base/fort away from what it was when they served there.

Which is why the men who trained and served at Muroc Field were all dishonored the moment the Air Force renamed it to Edwards AFB…in honor of a combat pilot with six Distinguished Flying Crosses who died during a test flight.

I had a really… I dunno. Weird feeling today. It’s not quite despair, but there’s a heavy note of hopelessness in it. It’s been four months spent 98% inside the apartment, and I’m the kinda guy who doesn’t hate it, but this morning the decree came down that we really had to fill out the asinine surveys about next steps in the office.

Such gems as “Do you trust the executive leadership team with your safety as we resume normal operations in our office space?” And the always wonderful “Are you worried about the future of your job?” And a few other doozies in that general line, including some badly worded implicit double negatives where it’s not even clear what the meaning of yes or no was.

This was on the same day when our state (the glorious state of Indiana - insert your hoosier jokes here) posted its highest single-day number of positive tests to date. I was livid, and I may have stretched the limits of polite business language in filling out said survey.

I’m just so mad, and tired, and sick of all the goddamn stupid. And it’s not going to end, because the states will fucking kick and scream when Biden gets in and tries to enforce any kind of reasonable national lockdown policy. And now because some self-important wannabe executive shitheads can’t read a basic fucking line graph I’m going to have to do the whole passive resistance nonsense to continue working from home while our department is already fighting executive overreach on other fronts.

So it’s 4 AM and I’m tired but I can’t fall asleep because I keep thinking about all the stupid and what I’m going to have to do to literally survive it.

I hate to harp on these things, but I passed that point months ago when it was decided that hotels are considered “essential” and thus my pasty white ass was informed that we’d be braving the storm unless corporate said different. I’ve watched as the few good weeks of sanity were totally undone by the very industry I work for using their lobbyist dollars to pressure our governor into “reopening” the state only weeks after it had (reluctantly) shut down. So that now I’m working in the epicenter of the state’s resurgence of CV-19 cases, because nobody with two functioning neurons asked “Is it a good idea in the midst of a pandemic to open up the tourism industry, knowing that idiots from areas that haven’t tackled their own outbreaks will flood our beaches?”

The idea of “hazard pay” has never even passed the lips of my employers. Instead, the full totality of their acknowledgment that employees may not want to work in an industry where they are constantly in contact with total morons…is to offer us a one-time payment and a few months of health insurance if we chose to voluntarily quit. And by waving away the offer, you (in the eyes of the company) waived any liability in the eyes of the company’s lawyers if you should be infected.

Combine all this with my planned vacation going into the shredder because they first cut down the staff to the bone, and then only started rehiring once the summer crowds began to come back, and I must admit that I’m saltier than a bag of fast food french fries.

The starting values for MegaMillions and PowerBall were decreased back when the pandemic hit, as the already slow lottery sales became even slower.

Both lotteries got rid of their minimum increment for each new draw. So it has taken quite a bit longer for the jackpots to get to 9 figures.

Currently PowerBall has a decent jackpot, but it’s taken seven weeks to get there.

Locally, vendors have had a hard time keeping scratchers in stock, not because people are buying more but because the California Lottery’s own contractors aren’t delivering them as quickly. Apparently not only is Calotto closed to the public, their distributors are minimally staffed.

Gambing has taken a hit in the pandemic. Lottery sales are down. Las Vegas has seen it’s tourist industry greatly reduced. Sports betting has not happened because there are no sports.

What’s a gambler to do?

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jul 25, 2020 • 3:50:16am

Speaking of scratchers, I remain amazed at the number of Youtube channels dedicated to watching people scratch off their scratchers.

It’s not Shakespeare, but I guess there is a bit of drama.

My question is: where do people get all the money to spend on thousands of dollars of scratchers per week?

For example, this guy in California buys huge stacks of the big boys:

Huge Session!!🤑 Most Expensive Tickets In CA!!🍀 Pt 4 🏁

How, again I ask how, do these folk have so much money to spend? It’s not like they win the jackpots (the highest I’ve seen is a $1k win, but the typical big win is just $100.)

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jul 25, 2020 • 3:53:24am

Same guy, just last night, showing off 4 complete books of $20 scratchers. A cool $2400 of lottery tickets. He does mention that he has donors, and I guess they run some sort of contest. Still, it seems odd to me that this stuff goes on:

Let’s Go!!! Let’s Find A Claimer 🤑 Pt 1

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Jul 25, 2020 • 4:06:50am

hi

I’m here briefly.

My wife’s brother is battening down the hatches in advance of the hurricane approaching the Texas coast.

Conservatism always tends to genocide if it stays in power long enough. Whether a nation or a locality, they will kill to gain and conserve power.

Over on the other side of my state, more cracks in the Republican wall of silence on the epidemic. Teachers across the city of Omaha held a rally yesterday demanding a mask mandate, joined by citizens concerned about their children.

City council’s Democrats are united against Mayor Jean Stothert’s (R) original position against a mask mandate. One Republican member is opposed to the idea of a mask mandate but will support the county health commissioner if she imposes it. The other two Republicans consider it excessive government overreach.

Mayor Stothert caved, and says the city charter allows the unified Douglas County-City of Omaha Health Board to impose a mask mandate for an epidemic. The health board is to meet later today to impose that requirement. That will draw fire from the Governor’s office, which is still withholding CARES funds from any government entity in the state which imposes mask requirements and is seeking to overturn the ruling from the Lancaster County and City of Lincoln unified health board. They are both having their money withheld.

However, the county part of that mandate runs into a problem, as Governor Pete Ricketts is still trying to kill us in the name of conservatism. The Governor’s office is clear that state law says a “regulation change” for a county over 400,000 requires a three-week notification period, followed by thirty-day public comment period before a “new regulation” can be enforced. Following that, the health board could not impose a mask mandate on rural Douglas County or Omaha suburbs before mid-September.

The Governor’s office is clear they will go after the Douglas County-City of Omaha Health Board members in court on criminal charges if they try to impose a mask requirement on rural Douglas County.

On the wingnut side of the state, there was one new case. Rural schools and governments are in real danger of being harmed by the governor withholding CARES Act funds; nevertheless my school district is remaining closed to bypass that, and Banner Public School in Banner County has decided to challenge the governor and order mandatory masks.

In Banner County, that could result in removing funding from the school and the county government. Worse, since the school library also serves as the county public library, it will affect the library as well.

Editorial: Get Prayer Out of Government (Seeing Red Nebraska)

Before we decided to write this piece, many of us on the SRN team didn’t know what religious identity many of the rest of us were. So we took a roll call and here are some of the answers:

“An atheist who occasionally thinks things are so fucking weird I am agnostic-ish”
Protestant Christian
Methodist
“Extremely Jewish”
Unitarian Universalist
“I’m atheist but will go with Satanic for the purpose of making people lose their shit even though satanism is nothing but atheism with added pussy power and social justice”
Lutheran
“a terrible Buddhist”
Eastern Orthodox
“Newly atheist, formerly Southern Baptist”
Episcopalian
Zen Buddhist

The reason we didn’t even know most of our religious identities despite getting along very well and chatting on a daily basis is because—imagine this—it generally has nothing to do with our work together.

And it has nothing to do with the work of secular governance either.

I think the new admin and DOJ just about have to go after Barr in some way. He pretty much trashed any reputation and tradition of political impartiality and being there to serve the country instead of the President. There is a lot to fix there and in the judiciary.

And I expect that DHS will get broken back up. And hopefully CBP razed to the ground and rebuilt as well since there is probably so much wrong there institutionally that partial measures will get nowhere.

As Nebraska sees surge in COVID cases, experts warn things could ‘go sideways’ (Omaha World-Herald)

Nebraska’s count of new COVID-19 cases has taken a definite turn higher, with totals not seen since late May.

While two hospital systems say they are not experiencing a surge in patients, health experts warn that hospitalizations will rise even more in the coming weeks as the new cases progress.

Dr. Kelly Cawcutt, an assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the associate medical director of infection control and epidemiology, said the Nebraska Medical Center has seen an increase in patients after experiencing a low several weeks ago.

Now they own hundreds, from every broadcast network in the USA. About the only market in the country they don’t have a station is Scottsbluff. In several markets they own multiple stations with different network affiliations (see the link for the details for your state).

His assertion he never said a gay man cannot harass a woman is refuted by the large number of people who heard him say it. That is why the state party withdrew its support.

His path to victory was always tough, but now its impossible. We have a good candidate to replace him with, but he must withdraw by September 1. It seems apparent he is not going to do that.

I also got an E-mail response to my contact with Senator Ben Sasse about not promoting Donald Trump’s BS about everything from masks to hydroxycloroquine.

While his letter was mostly boilerplate, he (or his staffers) did address me personally to assure that Senator Sasse does not support those positions and encourages everyone in Nebraska to mask up, socially distance, and other things to protect themselves. His E-mail pointed to resources from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the CDC for further information.

He also noted he’s interested in working with Democrats on extending aid during the epidemic. (Mitch McConnell recessing the Senate is not Sasse’s fault, McConnell isn’t going to listen to him.)

There is very little I agree with politically with Senator Sasse, but his office is always respectful, explains the answers to my questions, and never sends a Dumpster fire of an E-mail like Chris Janicek did.

You would likely need a private plane to go to most of the nations in question anyway.

Plus it’s not exactly a playground for the rich either. Albania, Kosovo, and Tunisia aren’t exactly hot spots for American tourists. (I’ve only been to Tunisia thanks to the Navy.)

Turkey a bit more, but tourism is off there over the ever-stricter religious government.

The Dominican Republic attracts lots of tourists normally, but five hours ago the US Embassy in Santo Domingo issued a travel advisory noting the Embassy is closed and the epidemic in that country is out of control.

do.usembassy.gov

They also note hospital capacity is already strained there, the government imposed a nationwide curfew, masks are mandatory nationwide, and large gatherings are suspended.

Mexico is also a pretty big mess, too. 129m people in the country, 378k cases, almost 43k deaths. But they have a massive shortage of testing, so those numbers are probably optimistic. Turns out leftwing populist governments are just as shitty as rightwing populist governments.

Tropical Storm Gonzalo is raking the Venezuela coastline and the Windward Islands right now. It’s expected to rapidly die after it enters the Caribbean Sea, because the waters and winds are unfavourable to sustain the storm.

The tropical wave southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands looks like it has a good chance of developing into a tropical depression in five days, but it will be moving over the same waters Gonzalo did. We’ll have to see if the tropical storm stirred up enough deep cold water to prevent development of the depression.

re: #384 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

From the NYT article is this little nugget:

Mr. Danchenko’s identity is noteworthy because it further calls into question the credibility of the dossier. By turning to Mr. Danchenko as his primary source to gather possible dirt on Mr. Trump involving Russia, Mr. Steele was relying not on someone with a history of working with Russian intelligence operatives or bringing to light their covert activities but instead a researcher focused on analyzing business and political risks in Russia.

WUT? Trump was allegedly a businessman. Business is directly tied up with the Russian government there. The Steele Dossier attempted to show that Donald Trump might be compromised in some way by the FSB or SVR, which is a business and political risk in dealing with Russia.

How does that question the credibility of the dossier?

Now the park is closed until further notice starting today.

“Trump could not be more on the wrong side: New poll shows Trump’s black lives matter protest response could cost him 2020, by Peter Hamby, Vanity Fair

Exclusive polling suggests the protests changed Americans’ minds so quickly, and so profoundly, that Trump planted himself even further on the wrong side of public opinion than previously understood.

Yet Trump seems to be doing the work on his own in recent days, by dispatching federal troops to cities like Portland, Chicago, and even Albuquerque to tangle with protesters who, for the most part, have been behaving peacefully for more than a month. As with Lafayette Square, Trump is perversely creating mayhem in the name of law and order, clinging to the apple-pie idea that the “silent majority” of 1968 is still hiding out somewhere. The country will “go to hell” if Biden wins, Trump said this week, as if people don’t understand that he’s the one presiding over the chaos. But if Avalanche’s research is correct, the silent majority of 2020 is firmly on the side of Biden when it comes to issues of race and justice, and its members walked out of Trump’s community theater Richard Nixon impression many weeks ago.

Well, according to the Righteous Brothers (and hey, they’re righteous)

If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.
If there’s a rock and roll heaven,
Well you know they’ve got a hell of a band, band, band.

Also if you get bored this weekend, AP’s what didn’t happen fake news recap is always worth a read:

apnews.com

Good page. Here’s an example:

bigcountryhomepage.com

CLAIM: A video from a 1985 hearing exposes Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for using the N-word, stating: “We already have a n—- mayor, we don’t need any more n—- big shots!”

THE FACTS: Social media users are twisting Biden’s words from a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 1985 for the nomination of William Bradford Reynolds as U.S. deputy attorney general. Biden was reading a racist statement made by a state legislator during a redistricting process in Louisiana that was overseen by the nominee, who was being questioned under oath.

Biden was using those comments to build a case against Reynolds’ nomination, pointing out that as the assistant attorney general for civil rights he ignored racist comments by lawmakers and signed off on a plan that gerrymandered Louisiana’s congressional districts to deprive Black residents of representation. Biden specifically questioned Reynolds about a Louisiana congressional map redistricting proposal called the Nunez plan. C-Span video footage of Reynolds’ 1985 nomination hearing shows that Biden repeatedly asked Reynolds if he heard or saw any evidence that Louisiana’s politicians intentionally drew the map in a way that discriminated against Black residents in New Orleans.

Reynolds said he did not find any evidence that this was the case. Biden pointed out that Reynolds did, however, receive a memo from his staff that highlighted racist comments made by legislators who opposed the majority Black district. Using the N-word in the quote, Biden said: “They brought to your attention the allegation that important legislators in defeating the Nunez plan, in the basement, said, ‘We already have a n—- mayor, we don’t need any more n—- big shots.’”

Biden argued that those comments, as well as other problems with the Louisiana governor’s plan, should have been a red flag for Reynolds, who should have never signed off on the plan. The Senate Judiciary Committee ultimately rejected Reynolds’ nomination in a 10-8 vote.

So the constitutional rights of individuals can just go pound sand then I guess. Law and order isn’t what it used to be.

According to a lawyer who heard the decision, the judge practically laid out the course of action for a successful case by someone who did have standing (like, say, an individual affected).

Of course he would be. Conservatives bellyache about “civility.” They are always the victim.

That goes back to our Unicameral having to be shut down yesterday early because a Republican senator was throwing a tantrum on the floor because his own constituents sent him E-mails or telephone calls calling him “sunshine.” This is the same guy who flipped off a Democratic senator a couple days before in the Unicameral and also claimed victimhood because she called him out on a falsehood.

I’m just not feeling sad:

It was a chance for the 41-year-old Republican to snag a top billing during Trump’s final coronation and test the waters for a potential run at the GOP presidential nomination in 2024. In an interview last month, Republican Party Chairman Joe Gruters said he expected the convention would “put Gov. DeSantis in the spotlight and add fuel to his efforts to make a national name for himself.”

But Trump’s sudden announcement Thursday not only dashed those plans, but raised doubts about DeSantis’ own response to the coronavirus. On the same day DeSantis contended Florida’s outbreak was showing signs of slowing down, Trump argued it was too dangerous to hold a convention there…

Nice spot on the 3 way. Wonder who was screwing around on the line that day?
Or maybe it was a request and he just picked it up after the guy sold it.
Lot’s of strange things on and in factory built back then.

On the Zemaitis.
It’s lighter than I thought it would be. +
But not as resonate as I hoped. —
Craftsmanship is great. No edges on frets. No space on inlays on neck. Neck pocket is perfection. Came “set up” but we know better.
No name humbuckers. Suspect tuners.
The usual.
After you hold great guitars all these years I have to find that sweet spot it’s capable of.
Jury is out, 72 hour return time running down.
Not sure, but very well built. I’d love to get it to my tech in Reading Pa, but can’t right now.
I’ll need 3-4 weeks to see if I’m happy.
Oh and they have 9’s on it I prefer 10’s.
I’ll shoot some pix in a minute or two. Front is gorgeous.

Can’t wait to see it. Congrats on a shiny new guitar!

The story on that Strat is that Jerry Garcia took Spencer and Greenie to a warehouse full of old guitars in San Francisco and Spencer picked that one - it was a ‘58.

I read an interview where he said he had it for a few years but never really fell in love with it.

DeSantis’s bid to make a name for himself already came with the dramatically rising cases of Covid-19 and the horrible response. He is world-famous now for bringing death and destruction on his state. I doubt a moment in the spotlight with Trump would have washed the stink of death from him.

WASHINGTON — For Senate Republicans, it’s now all about self-preservation.

As their grip on the Senate majority teeters while President Donald Trump’s political standing plummets, their fate could well be determined by their ability to produce a sweeping pandemic recovery package before the election. But their frantic attempts to do so have so far produced little more than deep division in their ranks and with Trump — not the place they wanted to be 100 days out from a decisive race.

Their uncertain fortunes appear to have stiffened Republicans’ resolve to do something they rarely try: distance themselves, however gingerly, from Trump. They have jettisoned the president’s call for a payroll tax cut, drawing a resentful response from him on Twitter.

Didn’t someone post here days ago that there is a real split in the Boogaloo movement, with many of the younger members more aligned with other younger members of the society — pro-gay and pro-BLM?

With a creative solution: stop maintaining it, and let nature obscure the carving with trees, vines, and other vegetative growth.

I somewhat like that solution, or, they could just change the show they put on to reflect the actual true history. Yeah, they were brave. So what? Brave isn’t all that notable. What they fought for needs to be addressed and that is a perfect site to use for that.

re: #536 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

I thought they were giving him until Labor Day?

I don’t know which shit show I’d rather see more:

1. Trump just randomly announcing that he’s decided not to seek re-election because we as a nation don’t deserve his amazing leadership and the ensuing clusterfuck floor fight at the GOP convention
2. The GOP establishment finally getting so worried about Trump sinking their chances to hold power that they put another name into nomination to cause a floor fight
3. Trump resigning, Pence pardoning him and his family, and then the clusterfuck floor fight that happens when Trump shows up at the convention and decided he wants to be president again afterall

That prick along with others like KKKristolmeth, Tory Twit Sullivan, Adulterer Newt, McCaughey-Ross and their fellow conservatives made my parents lose their home thanks to medical debt.

Same here with a woman on our library board; her husband died of cancer and she lost her ranch to medical debts. She now lives in a tiny house in town when she and her husband before were easily classifiable as millionaires.

What is the point of being a boogaloo boy if you’re going to support BLM? I thought that the purpose of the bb’s was to start a race war.

I actually got to visit Maple Leaf Gardens in the mid 1980’s while I was there for a training course taught by CA for one of their security products - but it wasn’t for a hockey game, but a wrestling event. Turned out my hotel that I was staying in was next door to the arena, and I shared a limo with Luscious Johnny Valiant, who asked the limo driver where he could get a drink, given that it was beyond closing time.

Before the limo came to pick me up, I saw Paul Orndorff pick up a rental car at YYZ.
