There are License Plate Reader cameras mounted along the freeways here, also some police cars have multiple LPR cameras mounted, automatically checking every plate it passes for warrants. I would imagine, sooner rather than later they will be cropping up at major intersections. It wouldn’t be difficult to switch out the video car detection cameras that actuate the traffic lights to ones that could do both LPR and video detection for traffic control.

So, this is kind of interesting. It’s long been something of a mystery as to why the Mayans abandoned their urban areas. Some recent research indicates that water contamination may have played a role in that.

Tikal, one of the foremost of the ancient Maya cities, plays a central role in this discussion because of its sharp population decline followed by abandonment during the late 9th century CE. Our results, based on geochemical and molecular genetic assays on sediments from four of the main reservoirs, reveal that two of the largest reservoirs at Tikal, essential for the survival of the city during the dry seasons, were contaminated with high levels of mercury, phosphate and cyanobacteria known to produce deadly toxins. Our observations demonstrate severe pollution problems at a time when episodes of climatic aridity were prevalent. This combination of catastrophic events clearly threatened the sustainability of the city and likely contributed to its abandonment.

TL;DR - According to Kenneth Tankersley of the research team, the problem was likely the Mayans’ fondness for colors. They used a paint made of cinnabar, or the mineral cinnabarite, which is a blood-red colored mercury sulfide. Mayan painters used cinnabar paints on the walls of palaces, temples and other buildings and they decorated a good many other things with that paint too, including pottery. The problem is that cinnabar is highly toxic due to its high mercury content. Over time, mercury ultimately found its way into the city’s water tanks, making them unusable.

I was always astonished that anyone got anything done on a 128k Mac. I remember how obscenely expensive RAM was but with the all the stuff the Mac had to load in memory you just couldn’t do much till the 1 mb model came out.
But then the Plus and the Laserjet came out living up to Job’s hype and utterly changed the world.

There’s long been talk of legalizing marijuana consumption here in Czech Republic….the only thing holding it back is a bunch of old dinosaurs. It’s pretty much about as close to being officially legal as one can get, but even the shops that sell weed are always worried that the police could swoop in any second and shut them down. Until those old dinosaurs are gone from the political scene or have a change of heart, full legalization is unlikely.

It’s like comparing Apollo 13 to From the Earth to the Moon; Apollo 13 gives you a compressed version of the “successful failure” with the highlights punched up, but FtEttM gives you a wider-ranging story of early NASA, from Mercury through to Apollo 17 (even with the episode dealing with Apollo 13, FtEttM goes at it from the angle of the news media on the ground covering the event).
Which is all kinds of funny, because Tom Hanks and Ron Howard did both Apollo 13 and FtEttM; after Apollo 13, FtEttM was a passion project for Hanks to flesh out more of the history of 60s-early 70s NASA. America has now passed the milestone of 4 million COVID cases, and we’re still arguing with doctors and epidemiologists about masks and school closures. I expected some of this, because I literally wrote the book over three years ago on why so many Americans think they’re smarter than experts. What I did not expect is that this resolute and childish opposition to expertise would be hijacked by the president of the United States and an entire American political party, and then turned into a suicide cult.
It did not take a lot of foresight to know, even before the coronavirus arrived, that the United States was leaving itself vulnerable to a crisis that would require the public to trust experts. We long ago became a narcissistic nation whose citizens believe they can become competent in almost any subject by watching enough television and spending enough time on the internet. But I was certain that a true national crisis — a war, a depression, or yes, a pandemic — would snap people back to reality.
I was wrong to be so optimistic.

There’s long been talk of legalizing marijuana consumption here in Czech Republic….the only thing holding it back is a bunch of old dinosaurs. It’s pretty much about as close to being officially legal as one can get, but even the shops that sell weed are always worried that the police could swoop in any second and shut them down. Until those old dinosaurs are gone from the political scene or have a change of heart, full legalization is unlikely.

To me, that’s different though, it’s less about flag waving patriotism. My dad used to take me to hockey games, back in the late 60s. I don’t remember that being a thing then. This was a minor league team (Columbus Checkers) in an international league, so maybe it’s different. I don’t remember military fly overs or constant tributes to the military at sporting events when I was a kid either.

There’s a phrase, the “Grocer’s Apostrophe” which is applied to a particularly common and egregious abuse of the rules of grammar. It originates from the supposedly ubiquitous mis-labelling of food in grocers to wit: “Cabbage’s £1.50 each”
I was reminded of this crime against the English language recently when reading a report on the BBC website about a food processing plant in England which had an outbreak of COVID-19 in its workforce (the usual thing, low-paid workers in close contact with each other and little or no PPE made available).
The photograph accompanying the article showed the company’s main entrance with a sign routing delivery traffic — an arrow was labelled “HGV’s”. It was a food and vegetable packaging plant, of course.

Paywalled so I can’t read the actual piece, but there’s a fair amount of that line of thought going around. First it was “Whites caused this. Everyone needs to join us.” but now there’s a surprising a amount “Butt out. This belongs to us.”
A few weeks ago I was listening to a discussion of how segregated neighborhoods still are, when a White woman called to say that she had chosen to live in a neighborhood which was predominantly people of color. One of the guests on the show dismissively told her she was part of the problem because she was gentrifying the neighborhood and forcing poor people out.
I recognize that there are many opinions on the best way to solve the ills of society, and it probably feels good to be in a position of moral power over others (for once,) but I think some people need to step back and think about what they are saying.

Every white marching will need to make sure to not expect anything special as a reward for their efforts. But Trump really would have loved to have just had blacks to beat on and kidnap. Two: if you’re calling on a wider response to injustice, “dilution” is going to be happen eventually, and that needs to be combatted from within.

Here’s the middle:
The protests that have gone on for weeks in Portland and around the country had a very specific origin. The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis prompted a nationwide reckoning with the original and savage crime of slavery our country committed against African Americans. This crime has been reverberating through every generation in this country, black and white, for 401 years. That monstrous crime has finally caught up with us as a nation. I do not believe it is a time for spectacle.
Unfortunately, “spectacle” is now the best way to describe Portland’s protests. Vandalizing government buildings and hurling projectiles at law enforcement draw attention — but how do these actions stop police from killing black people? What are antifa and other leftist agitators achieving for the cause of black equality? The “Wall of Moms,” while perhaps well-intentioned, ends up redirecting attention away from the urgent issue of murdered black bodies. This might ease the consciences of white, affluent women who have previously been silent in the face of black oppression, but it’s fair to ask: Are they really furthering the cause of justice, or is this another example of white co-optation?
There is more at stake here than who appears most often on nightly TV broadcasts. Everyone seeking to advance justice in Portland faces great danger. Right now, there are unmarked, unnamed federal forces kidnapping our citizens off the streets without justification or authority. The mayor of Portland and governor of Oregon have asked them to leave, to no avail. We know this is a violation of our Constitution, but with President Trump promising only more occupations in more cities, we ignore this risk at our peril.
He says he’s planning on traveling to Portland to have a rally to refocus the efforts, but that ultimately the effort needs to move into the boardrooms, schools, and workspaces. But I wonder if he’s missing that that has been happening. The Redskins aren’t changing their name because the owner wants to.

I’m old enough to be around when “Mississippi Burning” happened — and it was 2 white men — “outside agitators” from New York — and a black man from Mississippi — who were murdered by those who share the same ideology as Trump supporters. We are all in this together and until whites are as committed to BLM as African Americans we cannot solve the racial problems that have poisoned this nation from its inception. Either we move forward as one nation or we will disintegrate as Putin and his puppet Trump ardently desire.

Yeah, this is kind of my problem-if one shouldn’t go out and participate in what is actually happening (which as an old person in the age of Covid, I shouldn’t anyway) what exactly should I be doing? Voting for people (esp. people of color) who support justice, giving to various causes, sure. But there is a tendency to tell people what not to do, rather than a specific action that would be helpful.
It’s like discussing racism. With whom? Do people of color really want to spend their free time “educating” every white person they know? I suspect not. What would they tell me? Racism exists and it’s a bad thing? Yes.
We have implicit bias? Yes, I know I do. I’m human, virtually everyone does. I suspect the best we can do is to recognize it and adjust actions appropriately.

i see his point where he’s afraid of people “co-opting” the BLM movement, but seeing how people are putting their asses into the line of fire seems to imply that there are many people who agree and are willing make that agreement a tangible thing. What essentially is the goal of BLM? Is it a Blacks-only event? Is it to bring the struggle of what minorities face everyday in our society out into the open and being talked about? Is it to display who is actually oppressing whom and to illustrate the disparity in the projection of that power?
Does he believe that somehow this can only be enacted without getting the people who have tacitly been silent remaining so?
I don’t want to downplay what he’s saying here, but they also have to be aware that the Vets and the Moms and the youths aren’t trying to supersede the movement, it’s how the media is choosing to portray the movement is doing that by going to those supportive voices and emphasizing them over speaking to the BLM people with which this all started. The people out on the streets aren’t the enemy, they’re the direct result of the success of getting your message out and changing minds and opinions.
