This 2020 shit is getting old. The best BBQ joint between Montgomery and Chiefland, FL has just closed. The place was there for 40 yrs or so. A reporter heard rumors and ran up to grab a last sammich.

Handwritten sign on the door— “Out of everything. Closed Forever.”

Reagan’s not messing around with his legacy - even though Trump is a direct descendant of the southern strategy that Reagan and the GOP exploited for decades.

But that Reagan’s also taking the RNC to task? That carries weight.

Last week, 18 were arrested by the DHS goons. That’s across an entire week.

That’s about 2-3 a night. That’s not a riot. That’s not anarchy. That’s barely a blip on the crime stats in a major city.

That they don’t have more arrests or photos of injuries reflects on fact that they are just trying to bluster and bulkshit their way through things - knowing the media isn’t going to call them out for it.

Yes, things can go from bad to worse:

Man dies in Fairbanks hospital as Alaska reports record 231 COVID-19 cases Sunday

The daily graph in in this article.

One employee caused an infection which has infected more than 61 others and that count will probably rise:

The City and Borough of Juneau announced ahead of the state that 21 seafood processor employees tested positive for COVID-19 Saturday. In total, 61 Alaska Glacier Seafoods employees have tested positive for COVID-19 since July 14. Forty more employees are awaiting test results, the city wrote in an online statement.

The virus was introduced to the processing plant by an employee who contracted COVID-19 through community spread, the city wrote.

The seafood employees are all in isolation and contact investigations are ongoing, the city said. The city did another round of testing on the 100 employees on July 22.

I think I wrote some threads back about a friend whose mother, in a nursing home memory unit, tested positive, along with about 20 other residents and 10 or more staff. Fortunately, Carol has stayed asymptomatic, but the home has lost 11 residents, and one older nurse has been severely ill. The head of the home is now positive.

My friend has now heard another home, halfway between us, is now having positive cases.

Horrible. This in very small town west central Illinois, with very few positive tests overall.

The real violence may well be yet come. If Trump loses this November, he’s gonna go from “Make America Great Again” (or “Keep America Great”) to “America Must Be Destroyed”.

There’s definitely a contingent of his supporters that are itching to perpetrate mass violence against their perceived enemies - and a Trump loss, big or small, could well be the trigger for them to act out. We, as a nation, have to be prepared for that.

See and this is a big problem. Rules are pointless with no enforcement but retail workers don’t make enough money to want to waste their time enforcing anything and the companies don’t want to be on the business end of lawsuits from customers who get angry with employees.

And they apparently don’t want to pay for additional security either.

And the people who move to those small towns — they’re going to need public schools, grocery stores, coffee shops, toy stores, horseback riding academies, gardening supply stores, etc. and of course an airport because the software engineers will need to visit corporate every few weeks… Could revitalize the whole region.

I really don’t think the size of Biden’s victory is going to change the amount of violence. Unless they never stick their noses off of federal property, the crimes they commit will be state crimes, and DT can’t do anything about them. “…Gilbert called on Gohmert to denounce the violence his supporters engaged in.

“Louie Gohmert needs to immediately denounce the violence that occurred in his name in downtown Tyler today,” Gilbert said. “When your armed thugs are shouting your name as they beat the hell out of a 21-year-old political operative, you need to get your people under control,” Gilbert said. “Gohmert also needs to get his disgusting rhetoric under control, because, just like Donald Trump, the vitriol that spills out of his mouth leads to violence. This time, against a 21-year-old college kid,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert also called on the Texas Rangers to immediately investigate the conduct of the Tyler Police Department in today’s matter. “The Tyler police were idly driving around the square in their patrol cars, and waving at the counter-protesters who were heavily armed,” Gilbert said. “They didn’t get on the square until the violence was well underway and weren’t even near the scene of the actual protest until Ryan had already been beaten up,” Gilbert said. “This is after we were told by the city last week there would be a sufficient police presence downtown for our rally,” Gilbert continued. “

hi

I see I continue to be correct to avoid anyone who identifies as Christian, as I have no way of knowing if they are plague carriers. I have no way if a benign Christian exposes him or herself to one of these disease carriers. Throughout history churches have been the centre of plagues, including the XX Century flu pandemic, it is not surprising they would continue to be so.

I see Mr. MacArthur is also misapplying the Bible he so loves to tout as well, arguing they are standing up to Caesar.

See, atheists read the Bible, we need to do so for self-defence.

When asked about what should be done about the Roman tax, he noted Caesar’s head on the coin and said render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s.

With all the power he allegedly had, he willingly allowed himself to be arrested, put on trial, and executed.

Romans 13 opens with the notation a Christian should obey government rulers because they are set in that position by God (though Christian apologists argue what’s written there is exactly opposite of what’s in the text). It is supported by 1 Peter 2:13-20. Of course, many Christians rejected their own Bible when Barack Obama was president as well. They translate in their heads “legitimate ruler” as “Republican.”

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Tropical Depression Hanna is still trucking southwest into Mexico. The Weather Prediction Center expects to downgrade it to a post-tropical low at 4AM Central Time.

Hurricane Douglas is sixty miles NE of Honolulu.

Meanwhile the tropical wave which came off Africa last week is now in the central tropical Atlantic:

1. Shower activity continues to become a little better organized
in association with a broad area of low pressure located over the
central tropical Atlantic about midway between the coast of Africa
and the Lesser Antilles. Environmental conditions are expected to
become increasingly conducive for development of this system, and a
tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form within the
next day or two while moving westward to west-northwestward at
15 to 20 mph. This system is expected to begin affecting portions
of the Lesser Antilles on Wednesday or Wednesday night, and
interests on those islands should continue to monitor its progress.

We do more testing than any country in the World, by far, over 55 million tests. Fake News @CNN says we should do more testing. But even if we did 100 times more, they would then say it is still not enough. They are totally discredited, just want Sleepy Joe to win in November!

again, it is not bout 4 million cases and 140K+ dead, it is about poor, mistreated Donnie!

270 to win has moved states on their chart again to incorporate the latest polling.

They note Cook Political Report moves five Senate races. Six regular senate races are now listed as toss-up (the Georgia special senate election is listed as Leans Republican).

Now the point is to run up the score. Toss up states now are:

FL, GA, NC, ME-2, OH, NE-2, AZ. If the election were held exactly by the chart, the GOP has no path to victory.

Meanwhile, over at EC, the fact that FL is now listed as “Solidly Dem” pretty much spells doom for Trump if the polls hold through to Election Day.

I get the folks who are saying “Play as if you’re (x) points behind,” but at some point you have to acknowledge that there’s no real way for the other team to get back into the game. We’re well past half-time in this game and coming up on the 2 minute warning (conventions). And there’s just not a lot of opportunities left for Trump to turn this around in his favor. Either there has to be something massively disqualifying about Biden turn up, the DNC turns out to be a total shitshow, or some major turnaround in the way the WH is handling matters for him to close the gap that is widening with every fuck up and brain dropping.

Good point. All it takes is one serious gaffe or monumental blunder on Biden’s part and the GOP will hammer that point relentlessly. Granted, things looks bad for Trump - but I’m not gonna count him out, not yet. It’s way too early for that. Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

We’ve learned that Trump’s covid19 team meetings at the WH last all of 15 minutes a day. That’s barely a standup in any kind of project management system (kanban, agile, scrum, etc.) We program 30 minutes daily to give updates to blockers, what needs improvement, what we’re working on today, and what still needs to be done. Then there’s meetings after that with the team to deal with specific issues and fixes.

Right now, covid19 is kicking ass and killing people by the 1000 a day. Trump doesn’t have a plan or a care. They’re continuing to die, because Trump and his corrupt GOP doesn’t care that the one thing that can save lives is the one thing they wont mandate: masks.

That’s the one thing that will save the economy and get business going again, but Trumpists wont mandate it because reasons. None of them are related to public health or science. It’s all because Trump thinks that they make him look weak.

What’s weak is Trump’s response and failures - he’s destroyed the economy. He’s backed out of throwing a first pitch at an empty Yankee Stadium (as if he was even invited to do so by the team, even though Randy Levine is supposedly a friend of his going back to the George Steinbrenner days).

But know that Melania’s going to do a landscape project to refashion the Rose Garden.

Priorities.

Which means (IMO), making damn sure we (Dems) don’t lose much - if any - representation in the House, and definitely nail down a Majority in the Senate. Oh, and push for as much progress as possible in flipping Statehouse seats country-wide: the next general election (2022) will be conducted under districting based on the 2020 Census: ten years ago, Republicans used their majorities in lot of states to gerrymander themselves into positions of unwarranted power (PA, NC and WI were notably bad, IIRC): we might only have this one shot to correct the imbalance (for another ten years).

He was the outsider running against the VP of a popular President. 1988 was my first Presidential election (I was 20) and I heard Dukakis speak at Rutgers - I remember being more interested in Robert Redford, who introduced him. One thing I think people forget as to why Dukakis lost is that he’s short. Bush and the GOP definitely practiced their “can’t have a girly man as President” schtick that year. I don’t think that works against Biden.

This is from the BLM protest in Weatherford Saturday. The terrorist’s rifle is pointed straight at the demonstrators. How is this even legal? Truth is, it isn’t. It’s felony menacing with a deadly weapon but the Weatherford PD chose not to act.

This is a Civil War-generating incident waiting to happen and that is just what Trump and the GOP think they need to turn opinion around.

And since it will be a mail-heavy election, the time to start requesting absentee ballots is just about now. (Except in some Alabama counties, where the TWO people who will manage all the mail-ins will return your request as “too soon”.)

Good morning!

I’ll put the bird video on for our cat in the office sometimes. It drives her crazy. She is deaf so can’t hear the tweets, but she sure sees them flying around the screen. She will jump up on the stand and go behind the TV to try to catch them there. She will then poke her head out from behind and check out the screen, then look back behind in bewilderment as to where they went.

Let’s see how this works out come mid-August. It’s never going to go away.

Despite orders to limit crowds, the stands remained full or nearly full for the three days of the 65th annual North Star Stampede Rodeo in Effie in northern Minnesota.

Thousands showed up to what is known as the state’s largest outdoor rodeo even though the Minnesota Department of Health and the state Attorney General’s Office imposed a spectator limit at the event.

The most recent phase of Gov. Tim Walz’s Stay Safe Minnesota Plan limits outdoor events and entertainment to 250 people who are social distanced.

The rodeo’s attendees were spurred on by a Facebook post last week from the event’s organizer.

Cimarron Pitzen, whose family has hosted the rodeo since 1955, wrote that the stampede would take place without official spectators. “If people would like to come and protest against this ridiculous Government Over Reach, feel free to do so, I will not stand in the way of peoples ‘Right to Assemble.’ ”

ok, i’m ready to play

here’s a bunch of things trump absolutely caved on
i mean shrank back /failed was WRONG on, and only just recently:

- payroll tax cut
- coronavirus briefings are back up after he shut them down re the imbleachment
- now admits it will get worse before it gets better
- demanded that all schools open on schedule - now well, maybe not all of them
- Republican convention with 20k swooning screaming fans - *he* was forced to cancel (not the rnc)
- months of masks not necessary, now all of a sudden masks might help

Are the R’s still cowed weaklings or will they finally see this and start to use it to pressure him? Maybe, maybe not.

But martial law? A “coup”?
Never gonna happen anyway but all the talk about one engineered by this weak coward and also followed through?

A huge chunk of the country, let alone the federal, state, and local governmental, law enforcement and military establishments aren’t going to just go belly up and be rolled over. They/we will resist.

Experience says (and history proves) he’s no kind of iron fisted ruler. He’ll crumble and quick.

Our country has long devalued and underpaid teachers, refusing to adequately fund the public schools that support our democracy. This is how the country has deteriorated over the last 40 years.

D administrations and D senates pursue policies that they believe will benefit everybody. R admins and R senates pursue policies that they believe will benefit their supporters, and if possible at the same time cause harm to their opponents.

R supporters get their preferences served by everybody consistently. D supporters get their preferences only when they have unified control of the presidency and senate.

So, earlier today, I had my Monday morning lesson with my student Mr. J, an older fellow and something of a Trump supporter….at least, until recently.

Last week, I suggested he should read up on Trump’s well-known history of failure. And today, he told me that he was genuinely surprised to read all of that - because it’s simply never mentioned in Czech media. They only focus on the illusion of success that Trump projects.

He’s slowly beginning to realize what we Lizards have known all along; that Trump is an incompetent boob, that he is afflicted by severe behavioral and personality disorders and that he has no business whatsoever being anywhere near the reins of power, aside from perhaps being the overnight shift assistant manager at a Denny’s restaurant….and even that’s iffy at best.

Combine this with Leningrad Lindsey’s statement earlier and the Dems should make it clear that this bill is DOA. Particularly considering that that “more complicated program” is only supposed to cover 70% of the pre-outbreak pay, meaning people are still getting screwed without lube.

I’m cautiously optimistic, I certainly like reading about being ahead in the polls

Also, Dukakis was not a well-liked VP four years before his run to one of the most popular Presidents in US history.

Douglas County Board of Health votes unanimously to support mask mandate (Breaking, goes to the Omaha World-Herald)

They heard Gov. Ameritrade’s threat, and gave him five middle fingers.

His specific threat is legalism: The law says any regulation in a county with more than 400,000 people must first be published for three weeks, then allow thirty days public commentary. Omaha’s mayor says the city charter allows the health board to impose such a mandate, but the Governor’s office says they’ll sue if it is imposed on the suburbs and rural areas.

Priorities.

Stand ups are typically 15 minutes long.

Platte County (seat North Platte) and Lancaster County (seat Lincoln) have also issued mandatory mask orders. Banner County here in the Panhandle (one of the most conservative counties in the state) ordered mandatory masks when school restarts.

It would appear that Gov. Ricketts is losing this fight. The threat is to withhold CARES Act funding if a mask is required in a government agency (including public schools).

Not to come across like a doom-and-gloomer, I hope: (I’m cautiously optimistic about the election as well, though the operative word here is “cautious”) but we, unfortunately, are still way too early in the process - and will be until convention time(s) at the end of next month - to be cheering President Biden’s inauguration just yet.

The real problem, IMO, is the “Mainstream Media”, of course: they have been preoccupied with other things of late (like a deadly, near-out-of-control pandemic): but post-conventions, I have a sinking feeling that they are going to revert to their usual Republican-by-default “horse-race” coverage, in which every minor uptick in Trump’s/Republicans’ polling is going to be ballyhooed endlessly as a “comeback” or “revival”; that - in the interest of “fairness”, naturally - every phony “scandal” or hoked-up “questions” about Joe (or any Democrat) will be endlessly parsed and nattered about on TV; that issues of election security will (again, as usual)
dismissed or ignored.

I’m still pretty sure Joe and Team (D) can - and will - pull it out in the end: that apparently permanent 45-55% gap is unlikely to be overcome - never mind the national disgrace of that “45%” - but it isn’t going to be easy or pretty.

Targetpractice  Jul 27, 2020 • 9:18:20am

I think I commented on this the other day, but the arguments that we must be overly cautious because “This election could turn out like (insert past election)!” is a bit hard to swallow for one important reason: The factors in play in most of the oft-used examples either don’t exist or are actually working against Trump.

1988? Trump is not the well-liked VP of a popular president who is running as (essentially) a third term of his boss’ administration, as well as his own decades of government service. That’s actually Biden this go-around, whose personality and energy is nothing like Dukakis.

2016? This is 4 years hence, Trump can’t run as the outsider who’s going to drain the swamp because he is the swamp. And despite their best efforts, Repubs have not been able to convince the public that the Bidens are corrupt, power-hungry, or duplicitous as they did with the Clintons.

Again, I’m not saying that it is impossible for Trump to win, nobody in their right mind is making that argument at this point. What I am saying, what I have been saying for awhile now, is that the more time that ticks off the clock, the more unlikely it will be for Trump to win without such massive electoral fraud that there is no way the public will accept the results. At some point, you pass beyond “Major upset” and go straight into “9/11 was a government plot!” level conspiracy theories.

Technology moves on. I don’t trust Trump either, but several respected international firms are hopeful that they’ll have a viable vaccine within 6 months. We won’t have enough data on Moderna’s vaccine by election day, so I hope it doesn’t get rushed. But, once reliable sources give their stamp of approval I’ll gladly take a dose or 2.

re: #399 Axolotl

It sounds like they’re spending 15 minutes total a day on this, with no further meetings given the shitshow that this project is dealing with.

Every aspect of the Trumpworld response has been a failure. They don’t have any interest in policy or process. It’s all about making Trump feel like he’s successful and winning.

The body count keeps rising. Cases are soaring. States should be mandating masking, but aren’t. There are bottlenecks with testing, limiting the ability to contain further spread. If it takes a week to get results back, that’s of little use in containing spread. Trumworld’s done nothing to fix any of the problems.

But they’re itching to reopen even further. Trump was demanding sports leagues resume play. That’s going to go down as a colossal mistake too.

15 minutes a day? Yeah, it shows, because it sounds like no one is even doing that much at these meetings. With these many problems, there’s no interest in solving for any of them. That makes sense too given that everyone involved has zero public health experience, or any experience in this kind of effort and what it takes to fight a pandemic. They’ve refused to staff this meeting with actual public health experts, and wont listen to those who warn of dire outcomes for failing to mask up.

This election is so far out of the normal bounds, the most likely analogues you’d be able to find would be those that occurred during major wars. And I mean active wars, the Cold War doesn’t really count. The fact that the CV-19 outbreak has pretty much dominated the headlines for months has done a world of good for Biden and a world of hurt for Trump. And yeah, it’s possible that will change after the conventions, but the Repubs don’t really have a lot of time on the clock to work with.

And before you say “October Surprise,” again remember that we’re talking an election that very likely will see historic numbers of mail-in votes. Even if half of all those sent out prior to October are sent in the moment early-voting begins in late-Sep, that’s millions of votes locked in before any rodent copulation can try to change minds.

After five years fighting, if a gladiator survived he could retire or become and instructor in the Roman army. “They were much sought after, afraid of nothing, and everyone was afraid of them,” says Grosschmidt.

Even though gladiators could retire after five years, the evidence shows that very few of them lived beyond the age of 30. The bones from Ephesus show one gladiator, out of almost 70 bodies, was able to survive the carnage and lived to old age.

Nebraska shattered voter turnout with our first primary (we previously had caucuses). It was the highest turnout of any election.

October 23 is the last day in Nebraska one can request a mail ballot if you live in a major city (rural areas are mandatory mail balloting). Nebraska is a “no-excuse” state so anyone in a city can request a mail/absentee ballot.
