Just remember, the lower Trump sinks in the polls, the more desperate and extreme the measures he is going to pull out of his voluminous sleeves to try not to lose an election is cannot win through legal means.

They will need massive shock and awe: something so outrageous and unprecedented that we are left stunned by the brazenness of it all and unsure/unable to react to it long enough for them to accomplish their goal, which is to keep Trump in power and keep him and his cronies out of prison.

hi

the last thread was pretty short, eh?

Extremely local news: Our toilet is fixed. The plumber was able to hook up the bidet by adding a thicker gasket to the hose in the toilet tank. That was $230. He did not charge for the gasket.

Regional news: There has been another death from Covid-19 in the Nebraska Panhandle, bring the total to six. Panhandle Public Health District has moved their colour-coded risk scale higher in the “moderate” category, closer to “high.” All counties are now listed as moderate, except the one non-Panhandle county in the district (Grant), which is listed as “low.”

Enough with the Race-Baiting (Seeing Red Nebraska, in which they go after Representative Don Bacon [R] for going after state senator Kara Eastman [D], and a state Republican primary where the state GOP and Gov. Ricketts put out a race-baiting and anti-atheist advert against another Republican candidate).

That reminded me of how easily our market breaks down under the slightest hint of crisis…shops could easily have limited purchases to family amounts, but had to interest in doing so, they are concerned with the amount they sell, not with ensuring the public a supply of vital products.

Well, normally they don’t need to stock so much bathroom tissue to supply families of ten for twenty years.

People were buying it with an eye on reselling it at a profit…German shops are allowed to restrict purchases to “normal commercial amounts”, i.e., enough to supply a family for two weeks.

My wife told a joke: Unidentified federal officers are technically UFOs.

———

My regional newspaper actually printed an op-ed from someone who is not either conservative or paleo-conservative.

This morning’s offering comes from Froma Harrop, a left-leaning libertarian.

FROMA HARROP: Ugly protests are Trump’s only hope (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

It would take quite a spectacle to upstage America’s humiliating failure to contain the coronavirus. It’s not every day that the Bahamas labels U.S. tourists as carriers of disease to be kept out.

President Donald Trump’s poll numbers continue to sink as cases and death tolls rise. The only thing that could possibly save him is political violence in America’s cities. And that’s what he’s cooking up.

It’s entirely in Trump’s playbook to provoke civic discord. He’s been drawing his detractors into his game for four years. And what better way now than to send armed federal officers in unmarked cars into cities that don’t want them? Unfortunately, protesters in Portland easily rose to the bait. And that chaos set off violent clashes, this time with local police, in Seattle, Omaha and Oakland, California.

Back in the stone ages when architectural offices were first starting to invest in AutoCAD, one of my coworkers and I came up with this testimonial to our beloved Rapidograph technical pens. One of the architects had it transferred to a t-shirt. I’ve had it posted in my various cubicles for over thirty years.

I should have added in terms of architectural drawing and technical drafting, which I developed a passion for in school. I loved setting up a new mylar sheet and drafting with my t-square and triangles. Drafting in a way as to not cause smudges and be efficient. I even miss the aroma of the blue print machine.

An interesting bit of retail news:

Sycamore Partners is reportedly the leader in an auction for J.C. Penney— and if the bid is successful, the private equity firm will merge the department store retailer with Belk, according to published reports.

The New York-based private equity firm owns Belk, which has 296 stores across 16 of the southern United States, according to Sycamore, as well as Talbots, Staples, Hot Topic, Aeropostale and The Limited, among others.

Who would emerge with ownership of J.C. Penney in the course of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy process has been a source of speculation, with Hudson’s Bay and mall operators such as Simon Properties also cited as suitors in media reports.

In breaking the news about the auction, the New York Post reported that Sycamore isn’t necessarily interested in retaining the J.C. Penney retail banner, but would convert about 250 stores to Belk and liquidate the rest. The report set the Sycamore bid at $1.75 billion.

I had a bottle of Koh-I-Noor pen cleaner that I’d soak the tip assembly in if they dried out. I didn’t have much trouble with them clogging if I kept them in-use. I’d use inks that had the least clogging issues. The only other pens I tried were Faber-Castell but those were steel tipped so I quit working with them once I was working on mylar.

That said, my pens fell into disuse really quickly once I was in a 100% CAD environment. I still have all my pens and other drafting equipment, but my drafting table is now covered with computer equipment and storage cubbies. I got kind of burned out on the daily grind of architecture so I haven’t used the pens for the fun of it for a long time.

ICYMI alert: yet another Republican mourning-piece in today’s NYT - from a GOP consultant *finally* realizing the Party’s abandonment of any sort of principle in favor of racism-driven Trumpism. Not really “news” - well, not to us here anyway - but succinct, anyway. Nut graf:

How did this happen? How do you abandon deeply held beliefs about character, personal responsibility, foreign policy and the national debt in a matter of months? You don’t. The obvious answer is those beliefs weren’t deeply held. What others and I thought were bedrock values turned out to be mere marketing slogans easily replaced. I feel like the guy working for Bernie Madoff who thought they were actually beating the market.

Otoh, Cool Whip and instant Jello are evil and nefarious in their own right and unlike subversive tracker vaccines, they actually exist. I never had a.particular problem with Tang, other than the stale cough-syrup taste.

Tang was OK as Russian Tea, where you mixed it with instant iced tea plus a little bit of cinnamon and clove to give it some real flavor.

Perhaps we’ll have another Era of Good Feelings soon?

Nice thought, but I tend to doubt it: I’m guessing the best we can hope for these days, is, that after a change of Administration, we’ll get a Month of Good Feelings, at best (probably more-likely “Weeks”), and then the never-Trumpers can go back to their natural state: grumping about Democrats, and faux-alarmism about “the radical Left”.

Oh, and whatever Republicans are left in Congress and Statehouses are likely (IMO) to simply double down on the racism, fascism and Jesus; these are people who don’t take defeat well….

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We’re already at our quota for 90 degree days for the summer with 2 months to go. Woo.

I hate these humid days with a passion. But it’s not like I can or should go somewhere else to cool off. Pool is closed. Malls are “open” but I wouldn’t go. Closest I get to shopping normally is going to costco about 1x every 2 months to stock up. Online purchases and curbside pickup are the name of the game. Online purchases and delivery. I don’t think I’ll need to step into a store to buy clothes for myself again. I don’t need to go to a barber except for special occasions since I bought myself a clipper a few months back.

I’m ordering in food. I wont step foot and eat inside a restaurant, not when I see people ignoring the rules or know that I don’t know where those folks have been. I don’t know when I’ll ever return to my office except as to pick up my personal belongings.

I don’t think I’ll need to ride NJ transit except in special circumstances going forward.

But yeah, Trumpists think that we’ll be returning to normal and ready to open schools even as states are seeing increases in cases and Rx and deaths.

Oh, and European countries are starting to see rises in cases again as they reopen, which is troubling. We saw Israel reopen schools too fast, and it caused cases to spike out of control.

We see baseball players getting sick, some with serious complications from covid19. These are millionaire players and they’re not masking or paying heed to the precautions. How in the fuck can we assume that students from K-12 will do any better than baseball players who have medical personnel traveling with them and advising them? And what happens if a student or faculty get diagnosed with covid19? Does the entire class have to quarantine and get tested regularly? Shut down the entire school? There’s so many permutations to all this, and yet the one question that can’t be adequately addressed is why reopen the schools into an out of control pandemic except for businesses to try and make more money even though majority of people see the folly in this.

Yet, there’s one thing that would help all facets of the economic recovery and it has nothing to do with tax breaks. It’s wearing a fucking mask. Mandate it. Mandate social distancing, and shut down businesses that refuse to comply. That’s how we get this under control and we can get the economy rolling again. Everything else is a stopgap for a vaccine that isn’t a guarantee to happen anytime soon no matter how many glowing pressers pharma companies present or Trump says they’re coming.

As we see, Trump’s baffling with bulkshit, and claiming that the military would help dispense vaccinations, even though the military has no fucking clue what Trump’s even talking about. This is how they’re running the pandemic response. Clueless, incompetent, and chaotic with listening to demon sperm doc and know nothing incompetents like Jared and Pence all while sidelining actual experts like Fauci. Then you have experts like Birx who have gone in on telling Trump what he wants to hear, not what he needs to hear. It’s just an absolute shit show, and Trump’s using this to advance other parts of the right wing agenda, like destroying environmental protections and rolling back rights and protections under the law.

Projections are that Republicans stand to lose something like 600 state legislature seats across the country this year (as heard on the New Abnormal).

I could see a post Trump reckoning that leaves us with a three party system, at least temporarily. Some sort of populist/American version of Christian Democracy and some sort of suburban based centrist party (liberal on a lot of social issues, but still “skeptical” of spending). And if that happens, it could create a situation where more Democrats can win - assuming you don’t see progressives try and form their own party to the left of the Dems (the UK has shown us that first past the post systems don’t necessarily have to be two party systems). So we could end up with some sort of coalition government style caucuses in Congress.

Demon Sperm is, at best, the name of a hidden track on a third studio album that doesn’t show up in the liner notes and isn’t the official name, but is sung enough in the chorus that fans just start to call the song Demon Sperm.

And it never actually gets played at concerts, except for occasionally at an encore.

I hope that projection about Statehouse seats holds up: that would be excellent news (even if overshadowed by national politics).

Agree about a Republican “split” post-Trump: though I’m guessing it would be more like into a Money Party (old-line regulars, Northeast social-moderates, etc.) and a God Party (the bulk of them, like a Protestant/Evangelical version of the old Spanish Falange). Like I opined: they don’t take losses well.

However, I seriously tend to doubt whether a progressive “Third Party” is actually likely to go anywhere: the US “Congressional” system really isn’t built for coalitions per se: I think at most one will get is a perhaps a few more “independents” in Congress here and there.

Claiming to be a sovereign citizen.
And, his ‘landlord’ was his ‘roommate’. So, this is a lot more domestic
Raises serious question on the law enforcement’s failure to act the day prior when the victim reported the accused threatened him with a sword

” A man allegedly used a samurai sword to decapitate his Connecticut roommate — a nationally known bridge player — and has refused to talk with investigators about the crime, claiming he is a sovereign citizen, according to a report.

Jerry David Thompson, 42, of Hartford, had recently moved into a vacant bedroom in the Asylum Avenue home of Victor King, 64, a Travelers insurance company retiree and professional bridge player, the Hartford Courant reported.

Thompson threatened his landlord with the sword after the two men had a dispute about the suspect not paying the rent, according to the arrest warrant cited by the news outlet.

A day before he was beheaded Sunday, King reported to police that Thompson had waved the blade at him, the Courant reported. …”

This was Rep. Gohmert back on March 9:

Republican Exposed to the Coronavirus Leads Kids Around Capitol (New Yorker)

Republican lawmakers including Ted Cruz, Mark Meadows, Matt Gaetz, and Doug Collins have made the responsible decision to self-quarantine following exposure to a man at the Conservative Political Action Conference who later tested positive for the coronavirus — but only after the latter Gaetz and Collins made direct contact with the president. But Texas Representative Louie Gohmert, who also made contact with the coronavirus patient at CPAC, declined to self-isolate after a physician said he could return to work if he observed “proper hygiene protocols.”

While back on the Hill, rather than limit non-essential interactions, Gohmert chose instead to lead a large group of children around the Capitol. The Washington Post’s Mike DeBonis, who posted a picture of the tour, stated that the group was “enormous … well over 100 kids.” CNN’s Jeremy Herb, who also took a picture of the group, reported that Gohmert said he would not shake hands with anyone in attendance.

A typo on a death certificate exposes a man allegedly trying to avoid prison (CNN)

This week in dumb criminals, in Nassau County, NY.

TL;DR, a man was convicted last year of two charges and was awaiting sentencing. At the sentencing hearing, his lawyer presented a New Jersey death certificate given him by his girlfriend, stating he’d died by suicide.

He was in jail in Pennsylvania when the prosecutor got word back from New Jersey that the certificate was faked (it had a misspelling and wrong fonts).

Pennsylvania extradited him on the charge of falsifying the document and another for conspiracy. The lawyer was cleared. He said that was the strangest thing he’d seen in practice, and he was in the midst of bargaining down the man’s eventual sentence on the original charges.

The man who caused the two-day Twitter boycott from users by comparing Jews to the Ku Klux Klan has been perma-banned from the site.

Wiley permanently suspended by Twitter over anti-Semitism (BBC)

Grime artist Wiley has been permanently banned from Twitter, five days after posting anti-Semitic remarks.

It follows a 48-hour boycott of Twitter by many users over what they said had been an unacceptable delay in dealing with the offending tweets.

“We are sorry we did not move faster,” Twitter said in a statement.

The escalation comes a day after Facebook and Instagram deleted the music star’s accounts for “repeated violations” of their rules.

Twitter said it has taken a similar step because the artist had broken its “hateful conduct” policy.

The San Francisco-based firm had previously temporarily suspended Wiley and left many of his past tweets visible. But it said it had decided to now make the ban permanent, and wipe all his past posts from its platform “upon further consideration”.

We’re happy to inform you that suburbs were created thanks in large part to racist housing discrimination policies for generations.

Not just racist housing discrimination; heavily subsidized racist housing discrimination.

The developers of the housing projects received significant federal grants to acquire the land the buy the building materials. The home-buyers and banks received significant funding for below-prime federally guaranteed mortgages. The federal government spent significant sums building oodles and oodles of public schools, with science labs and athletic fields and gyms and well-stocked libraries. The federal government funded the highways that turned those suburbs into commuter towns.

(and if a bunch of black and hispanic neighborhoods had to be bull-dozed to make a place for the highways, and then those blacks and hispanics had nowhere to go because they were short-changed on eminent domain prices, and even if they’d had the money redlining locked them out of almost everywhere… well, that’s America, innit?)
