GOHMERT! In Which Louie’s Refusal to Wear a Mask Bites Him Right on the Louie

Politics • Views: 27,353

The nightmarish cartoon character known as the dumbest man in Congress, Louie Gohmert, who refuses to wear a mask and frequently spouts conspiracy theories about COVID-19 (and everything else), has today tested positive for the virus.

Louie was seen yesterday having a chat with AG William Barr after his testimony, neither of them wearing masks. And there are unconfirmed reports that Gohmert went to the Congressional gym this morning after learning he had the virus, which would fit with everything we know about the Texas turkey.

He also apparently attended a press event last night at the Trump Hotel, sans mask.

So the dumbest man in Congress may also turn out to be one of the most deadly to be around.

UPDATE at 7/29/20 10:36:09 am by Charles Johnson

Louie has thoughts about his infection.

I hate what this administration has done to my compassion. They have earned the suffering they’ve gleefully inflicted on others.

re: #21 Backwoods_Sleuth

I don’t even know how to unpack this. On what planet is low income housing being built in suburbs? I’m in an area that was considered “exburbs” (beyond the burbs, almost “in the country”). It became the suburbs about 15 years ago. There are precisely two low income housing apartment complexes in this part of the county and they are near the shopping district, nowhere near the rest of the newer houses in upper class neighborhoods.

My house was built in 1979. It’s not in a subdivision. There are a lot of houses like mine in this area, some in smaller subdivisions, most standing alone. If anything, developers are approaching those single houses on larger pieces of land to sell so they can put 450K and up houses on them that are literally 15 ft apart. My wingnut asshole neighbors sold the land behind us and next to us on one side, it went from 6 houses to 60. It’s ugly and overcrowded and I do not even understand paying that much for a house where your neighbors can damned near reach your house while leaning out a window. (they admitted that part of why they left the land their family owned since pre Civil War times was black people living on the other side of us as well as others moving here. 1.6 million dollars for 15-18 acres obviously didn’t hurt, but they were very CONCERNED about that) There’s not a chance in hell anyone could have built low income housing in this neighborhood. The county commission is crooked as fuck and they would hold the thing up by denial of rezoning and other crap. The only affordable housing in this area is homes like mine, and you still can’t be low income and afford them. tl;dr Trump is full of actual shit. Demon Shit.

As always with Trump, if it’s something that seems like a cultural issue: It’s racism. “Low income housing” in Trump’s mind means non-white people housing (we know this because the Trump Org has been sued multiple times for not renting to non-white people). He (still) thinks that the suburbs are overwhelmingly white and that the white flight that happened in the 60s and 70s is still a thing.

re: #35 A Mom Anon

Affordable housing where jobs are located is a problem in many parts of the country. Poor people are priced out of communities because they can’t afford to live there, and then incur costs for having to commute from where they can afford to live to where the jobs are (lost costs for travel/time spent traveling), etc.

NJ has an affordable housing component where if there’s a unit of housing being built in a town, the town has to make sure a percentage of the homes built are for affordable housing (based on income and local market rates, etc.).

Trump’s dog whistle goes after poor people (who are by number mostly white), but by percentage are disproportionately persons of color (because that’s how the discriminatory housing practices got their start - by denying persons of color the right to live anywhere they wanted. Racism is essential to housing policy in the US. It’s all around us - from the roads and highways binding localities and through cities, to the construction of the very suburbs themselves - white flight out of urban areas was precisely because of racist attitudes, leaving poor persons of color at the mercy of those with political power where they did not, loss of economic opportunities, etc., and now with urban areas being gentrified and reclaimed as people realize that suburban lifestyle has a lot of costs (like travel to/from jobs), they push/price those persons of color out of their homes and force them to live further away.

But here’s the thing, eliminating discriminatory housing practices doesn’t end the suburbs. It puts a stop to future discrimination against persons of color. Trump wants to see the bad old days return. That’s what this is about.

I wonder if one of the impacts of covid moving a lot of businesses to remote work is if we will see some cities try to rezone office towers for mixed use, where they can build out apartments or condos on vacant floors. Not sure how much that will help affordability because I’m sure they’ll charge up the ass for those spaces, but more supply is generally a good thing in housing, no?

It’s not something that is common at all in California. You might have some retail/restaurant space on the first floor of an apartment/condo tower out here, but commercial and residential are typically separated.

I wonder how many office complexes will be left to rot. There are 5 near me that have one or two tenants and have sat otherwise empty for a long time, since the last economic crash back in 2008ish. In one spot, 40 acres were cleared 5 years ago to build office spaces and a “gun club”. One building sits on the land, it holds a bank with a drive thru and the rest of the building is empty. The gun club got a better deal a few miles up the road after the people in the houses across the street decided they didn’t want an outdoor firing range visible from their front porches. So the land is cleared and empty with no takers. Other spots are abandoned strip malls in places with really shitty access off the main road, a project that ended before it even started (meant to be mixed use and then the contractor went bankrupt) and one that finally got sold early last year to become a storage unit place. There’s a couple of half finished buildings that have now fallen into disrepair with no takers. Such a waste of money and resources too. Our county commission is terrible at planning. All they see is immediate dollar signs and promises.

re: #73 A Mom Anon

Part of the issue is local zoning rules. Newer cities and towns like to separate the residential and commercial spaces as much as they can. Some older cities don’t have that luxury because their downtowns (at least) were built before zoning laws.

That’s true. Atlanta seems to be sort of figuring this out, but it’s still too gentrified for people to afford living in most of the renovated buildings. Some of the work being done looks really lovely though. Sadly some really cool buildings have been torn down (the one that used to be a music venue called the Masquerade got torn down to build a combo farmer’s type market and apartments, it was an old mill converted into a three level music venue. First place my son went on his own to see shows) and replaced, but I guess that’s bound to happen.

Schedule for Trump’s fundraising luncheon in Texas (prepared remarks included).

Qusay: You finally showed up. I convinced my father to give you another chance.

Uday: My father really wants YOU on his team as a member of the Trump 100 Club. I’m a member, my brother Qusay is a member - we’re just waiting on YOU. We’re going to play the national anthem now. If anyone kneels, I’m going to shoot you like an endangered elephant.

[Kidd Rock sings national anthem]

Trump: LOVE ME! So it sort of is curious I send fascist thugs into an American city and try to make American suburbs white again and yet nobody likes me? It can only be my personality, that’s all.

[argle bargle]

Trump: Person Woman Man TV Camera

[sniffle snuffle]

Trump: I alone can fix the beautiful mess I’ve made. Bigly men, crying sir.

[ramps, water, FAKE NEWS]

Trump: In conclusion, send me all the money.

Reporter: Any comment on Representative Gohmert”s recent positive coronavirus test?

Trump: Who?

I spelled Judge Beer’s name wrong and I’m not going to fix it because fuck him that’s why.

Oh, we had an Aussie mix growing up. Probably mixed with a Lab, based on her coat. Awesome dogs. Cooper looks a bit like a Havanese, so I was wondering.

We had an Aussie-doodle. Not deliberately. Was supposed to be a purebred Australian Shepherd. When all that hair started growing and curling, we asked the breeder, what the heck? And she said, oh the Standard Poodle must have gotten to her. Well, yeah! Unfortunately, this one was Stubborn and not overly bright, and was Very into everything. Got hit by a car. (We lived way out in the country. Only road was gravel and a dog would have to work at it to get rolled. It ruptured his diaphragm, and we lost him. Looked like a great big, more grey, Cooper. We called him Tie-Dye.

All these reps saying they will drive home to Texas from DC to quarantine? I call bullshit.
Junior’s disaster of a girlfriend or was supposed to have driven home after the rally where all those people got sick, including Herman Cain. Later, it was revealed she flew home on a chartered jet. There is no way these soft, spoiled republicans are driving anywhere. It’s at least a full day’s drive and about 1300 miles to Dallas from DC. I just don’t buy it. And how are they going to do anything close to self quarantine on a cross country road trip?

The town has now taken action by WASTING police resources enforcing masks and social distancing.

I never once felt the need to contact a local elected official in my life before yesterday (I only ever contacted my senators when Trump nominated his bankruptcy attorney who compared liberal Jews to Nazi collaborators as ambassador to Israel!). Now I am going to war against my city. There have to be consequences for putting my life in danger like this. “Mistakes were made” is not going to cut it. Someone must lose their job.

About mixed-use buildings: The John Hancock Building in Chicago was designed from the start to that strategy. That was in the late ’60s, sold as “Commute by Elevator”. Son2’s first big job was to design a database to manage the power consumption from its complex A/C system. (The building is so big that it needs no centralized heating system—even in Chicago. It needs A/C year round to dump its excess heat from lighting and other activity.Tenants can have a window unit or heater.)

He can’t keep any deaths secret though. It’s a matter of record. At some point the total deaths for the year 2020 will be compared to deaths over the 5 or so years prior and that will show something a lot closer to the truth. It’s just too awful that we have to wait it out until then. I’m sure someone with expertise in all this is watching closely. In Georgia, we have Amber Schimdtke, PhD who is an expert in medical microbiology and immunology and has worked for the CDC. Right now she’s focused on numbers of cases and deaths using a lot of data and methods that are beyond me, but she puts everything into easy to understand language and charts. And she’s doing it while moving to a new job out of state. She’s said she’s committed to seeing this through. I hope so, because she’s one of the few reliable sources for GA.

Are gobinor are smart.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ordered that all remaining businesses that closed as the coronavirus started spreading across the state can reopen starting Monday…

The reopenings extend to racetracks, concert venues, movie theaters, adult entertainment venues, spectator sports, parks, festivals, and performing arts theaters. However, employees and patrons at those businesses will be required to wear masks and to follow social distancing and personal hygiene procedures.

(Like any of these fools will follow those rules. Yesterday, at the grocery store, in a city where there is a mask mandate, more than half of the morons had their noses flying free or weren’t wearing masks at all)

The latest reopenings will include allowing football games to go on if scheduled in the Fall, McMaster said.

The move comes as more than 1,600 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in South Carolina on Wednesday by the Department of Health and Environmental Control and as the White House coronavirus task force has listed South Carolina as a COVID-19 “red zone.” (bolding ,mine)

I didn’t fight all my life to get into suburbia and own a beautiful home. Neither did my parents: they had three suburban homes (sequentially, not simultaneously) by the time Dad was 32, and we were lower middle class.

Now, my wife and I were pushing forty before we bought our first (and presumably, last) downmarket home in the desert because we’re even poorer than our parents were, and they weren’t rich.

Suburbia can go fuck itself with its “keeping up with the Joneses” mentality and its homeowners associations poking its nose everywhere and dictating what you can do with your own damned property.

Trump and his spawn wouldn’t be caught dead living in suburbia. And I, who was raised in suburbia, wouldn’t be caught dead living in a secure, gated community.

Yeah, and do what? Fly to Kentucky and hold a big rally to demand that the voters write in Ivanka for Senator?

So let him: AFAICT, getting KY voters to sour on Moscow Mitch can only have positive results…..

Indeed. It will be cinematic - Mitch may finally be empowered enough to give Trump the dressing-down he has needed since he was a toddler.

Mitch threatening to convene the Senate to vote to convict and imprison Trump would make him soil his tightie-whities.

I’ve never understood why he didn’t use the whip hand on Trump back in April, when it could have made a difference. Had Trump actually done anything other than posture and retweet morons, this pandemic might not have been this bad, and Mitch might have been able to keep his majority.

Now, though?

Now, though?

They all knew they could have been done with Trump with a single vote. So, there’s only a couple of possible reasons why they didn’t:

1. They honestly didn’t believe it was an act worthy of removal from office
2. They thought Pence would (somehow) be worse for the country
3. They were so afraid of his base turning on them in the primaries that they put their own re-election concerns above the nation’s interests (forgetting that they still have general elections to win and/or that the base may be different in 2 or 4 years anyway)
4. The Susan Collins option: they were really stupid enough to believe that Trump learned his lesson and would be better after impeachment

I can’t believe that if you gave them sodium pentathol and asked them if they believed it wasn’t worthy of removal at least 30 would say it was grounds for removal. Pence is a religious nutjob, sure, but he’s not the rolling disaster that Trump is. So that leaves choices 3 and 4 - and since I don’t believe even Collins believed that when she said it, it has to be a Tigers Eating Peoples Faces Party situation.

The essence of the contemporary GOP under Trump is one of malfeasance and grift, corruption being made normal by Trump’s mobster instincts.

The old guard Republicans were hardly immune from corruption.

They hid it well, though.

And they had been brought up during a time when the idea of being a leader carried with it the idea of being a moral example. Even when they failed, there was that lofty goal.

Trump - the goal is to destroy anything that doesn’t help him.

And the GOP of Ford and Dole - they were the WWII generation, many of them decorated for their service.

Trump is the draft-dodging change in the GOP.

That Republicans worship the military today has to do with the need to project strength and nationalism, not service.

I really liked McCain in 2000. I actually voted for him in the primary that year. But I think by 2008, I think his time had passed. And yes, Palin was a terrible choice, and a terrible process got them there. But his first choice of Lieberman would have been a shitshow for the party. Barbara Bush’s husband.

HILL: And he had never really been vocally anti-abortion either - if anything, had been pro-choice actually throughout his political career just until about the time that he ran as Ronald Reagan’s running mate.

MCCAMMON: When Bush ran for president in 1980, he took a moderate stance on abortion, opposing public funding without favoring an outright ban, says Mary Ziegler, a law professor at Florida State University.

MARY ZIEGLER: So for some time, there were lots of politicians that wanted to make room for people who were really neither pro-choice nor pro-life in either party or to find a kind of middle way politically when it came to abortion.

I don’t believe it was an important issue for Reagan (otherwise why appoint O’Connor and Kennedy to the court?), but more lip service to the religious right.

I posted an article from Vanity Fair this morning about Pennsylvania Democrats for Trump and how they love him for being a full blown racist. Their jobs are gone their standard of living is declining but they do not care as long as Trump smacks colored people and queers down.

No.

I was totally opposed to Thatcher’s politics and think that she was largely responsible in turning the UK into the shithole it is today. Hell, she turned me into a political and economic refugee.

But Thatcher, democratically elected multiple times, co-creator of the IPCC, driving force behind the EU single market does not deserve to be ranked with Pinochet and Franco.

The Republican establishment was initially against Trump in 2016. But in the excellent language of Driftglass (IIRC), Fox News et. al were supposed to have clear title to the pig-people, but Trump claim-jumped them. Why should a well-programmed Faux News meathead content himself with the watered-down bigotry of a Jeb! when Trump is delivering on the real thing?

At that point, the GOP establishment had no choice. Since then they have apparently settled on a strategy of pretending everything is normal, enjoying tax cuts and deregulation while they can, and hoping that Trumpism manages to end without drastic punishment to the GOP for the ruin it has caused.

There might still be a few left, but none of consequence. They may officially become extinct when Bob Dole shuffles loose this mortal coil.

Bob Dole is 97. He is largely immobile but he did manage to stand briefly during Bush 41’s funeral.
In starkest contrast to today’s superstition and grift based GOP, Dole was also a genuine hero of science. In 1946, a chronic infection was still preventing his recovery from the severe shoulder wound he had received in Italy in April 1945. He heard about a powerful but troublesome experimental antibiotic, streptomycin, and volunteered to be a test subject. The first subject had died. The second had recovered but was permanently blinded. Dole was the third. He made a complete recovery, and was the first person to be successfully treated with streptomycin.

Meh, just get out of the Phoenix area. Bisbee is quite nice even when it’s hot. I loved the Coronado mountains too.

I think Arizona is gorgeous. Not to live there, but visiting is lovely. I would learn to tolerate the heat, but the politics SUCK.
