That was just part of their standard long-term plan of bankrupting Social Security. Their goal is to transform us into a feudal society where the peons have no rights or say in government of the .1%, by the .1%, and for the .1%.

313 dead in Texas today.

This is good, because it frees up more ICU beds for the 166,000 + active cases in the state.

We are living in hell and the Government is freaking out because they have no idea how to stop this. The simple answer is they can’t and we are just going to have to accept that we are just going to live with this virus burning itself out across Texas.

There is no plan. There is no solution. We are just going to have to hunker down and suffer, and hope we are not tapped on the shoulder by fate and get sick and die.

Night all.

There was a turn-based game many moon backs called Shattered Union that is fucking eerie to look at in retrospect: Unpopular-as-fuck presidential candidate wins the ‘08 election, leading to increased domestic strife and the imposition of martial law. 4 years later, the SCOTUS bench basically drops a ruling that disqualifies the most popular opposition candidates, such that the incumbent asshole wins by a narrow EC win. On Inauguration Night, a nuke blows up in D.C., wiping out virtually the entirety of the federal gov’t in one attack. After an emergency vote, the EU sends in “peacekeepers” to reconstruct D.C. and keep the US intact. But that only lasts a few days before states start declaring “home rule” and then entering into political pacts that leave the US separated into five factions (Hawaii just says “Fuck you, mainlanders” and doesn’t take any side until one faction manages to retake the whole of the continental US). The endgame is finding out that attack on Inauguration Night was orchestrated by the Russians, under the rule of a strong-man dictator who wants to restore Russia to its former glory with the support of generals who became rich selling weapons through the black market. And you have to retake Alaska, which Spetsnaz paratroopers seized control of in the chaos.

Did I mention this game was released in ‘05?

I can see why a lot of gays could, at least theoretically be drawn to the GOP policies on low taxes, as they are often high-income double earners without a lot of access to the standard dependent child deductions, nor do they buy big homes in neighborhoods with good schools and have large mortgage deductions.

And Latinos are often socially conservative, hard-working, religious and believe in strong families.

But of course, to the GOP, “family values” just means banning abortion and gay marriage. They do not value families in the sense of promoting education or community institutions because those might cost tax money.

Sponsor says bill banning abortion method lacks vote to advance in Nebraska Legislature (Omaha World-Herald)

The bill would ban D&E abortion procedures. It would impose a felony $10,000 fine and two year’s imprisonment for performing such an abortion. It would also allow a married man (but not a single man) to sue a doctor who performed such an abortion. It would ban the use of forceps for such an abortion, but not suction. It would not punish a woman seeking an abortion.

As such there were several positions on the bill: It’s a waste of time and money and interferes with rights and freedom, why married men and not single men, why suction but not forceps, the courts would treat Nebraska differently than every other state where such bans were struck down, &c.

I’m not. Despite what people tell you about religious freedom in the USA, it is potentially dangerous to be an open atheist. Media figures on both the right and left demonise atheists in the press and television.

I’ve noted here before that Eric Swalwell won his seat by demonising Pete Stark in primary adverts over his atheism. State Senator Megan Hunt here in a candidate survey came out as an atheist when she first ran for office to stave off Democratic opposition by positioning those who would attack her as bigots over that issue, not Republicans.

Lots of people don’t even know one atheist because so many atheists are afraid of discrimination or worse.

The internet cancer known as QAnon is spreading.

The baseless PizzaGate claim emerged during the 2016 election. Later that same year, a gunman showed up and fired an AR-15 inside the pizzeria, saying he was trying to rescue non-existent child sex slaves.

The claim lies at the heart of QAnon, a wild conspiracy theory that believes politicians, A-list celebrities, and a “deep state” of bureaucrats promote child sex abuse. To QAnon adherents, US President Donald Trump is seen as a savior figure, secretly fighting to bring down this fictitious cabal of pedophiles.

Now a report by internet trust tool NewsGuard has found that the coronavirus pandemic is helping this distinctly US ideology gain a foothold in Europe.

In the report, NewsGuard notes an increase in QAnon social media groups and pages in April, as lockdowns sparked by the new virus left millions of people virtually confined to their homes.

edition.cnn.com (Note: autoplay video embedded at link)

I’m noticing much more frequent mentions of QAnon here on Czech conspiracy websites and disinformation media.

When we lived in Oklahoma our small town had such a group, and my wife participated in it until we left. It met in a downtown coffee shop.

A county judge’s teenage daughter wrote a letter to the paper condemning the coffee shop and demanding a boycott, and called out atheists as Satanists and liberals.

It’s probably the only time I’ve gone after a teenager in a letter to the editor of a newspaper.

After that, we had regular drive-bys of the cops at our house shining spotlights in the middle of the night. That continued until we sold our home and moved here.

The Scott’s Bluff County Sheriff’s Department has deactivated its Facebook page in the wake of threats over the shooting a dog while serving a court summons a couple weeks ago.

The video released by the county sheriff’s department clearly shows the dog coming round a building with teeth bared to attack the deputy. He shot the dog when it was within a few feet.

Sheriff Overman said they worked to report threats against the department, block fake profiles, &c., but they came in too fast and concluded the only way to deal with it was deactivate the page.

In that case, the sheriff’s deputy was serving the summons at a machine shop on the property of the homeowner. The shop had two doors, and someone inside the building released the dog through the other door to attack the deputy.

In this morning’s article in the paper, they note dog trainers and such were asked about the video and they all concluded the deputy’s action was sound.

As for Facebook, the sheriff was mostly disgusted with the site refusing to remove threatening accounts. He notes some of the posted threats and doxxing of office staff rises to the level of a crime in Nebraska and has turned over that information to the state troopers to try to track down and prosecute where possible.

He points out Facebook is not really necessary to the sheriff’s department mission and may or may not reactivate the account at some point in the future.

The San Gabriel Mountains are a 37.3 mi (60.0 km) long portion of the Transverse Ranges and are bordered on the north by the San Andreas Fault, on the south by the Cucamonga Fault, and on the southwest side by the Sierra Madre Fault. The San Bernardino, Santa Ynez, and Santa Monica Mountains are also part of the anomalous east-west trending Transverse Ranges. The domain of the ranges stretches from the Channel Islands offshore, to the Little San Bernardino Mountains, 300 miles (480 km) to the east. The frontal fault system at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains extends from the San Jacinto Fault Zone in the east to offshore Malibu in the west, and is defined primarily by moderate to shallow north-dipping faults, with a conservative vertical displacement estimated at 4,000-5,000 feet (1,200-1,500 m) (courtesy of Wikipedia)

The mountains of California (save for the volcanos) are due to uplift followed by bits of the earth’s crust tipping over (which is why one side of a range is steeper than the opposite side.) This makes for all these medium sized mountains out here, and the many small to medium earthquakes.

On the USGS site the best way to see the faults is to use the gray scale base map:

The San Andreas fault is the largest one.

West of it are a great number of faults that are not one part of the continent slipping past the other part, but instead uplifted mountains (from mesozoic batholiths) that then start to tip over.

You can see in some locals many tiny faults, such as down in the San Diego area. That’s because geologists have done very fine-scale analysis of the local region.

If one drives through the city of San Diego (central part) going from west to east, on the streets one steps up every few blocks. It’s quite noticeable. That’s because ancient vertical events occurred as the mesa gets lifted up, first under sea, then at the shore, then finally above water. Most of the western few miles of San Diego were shorelines over the past few million years. You can find beach deposits even where I live (several miles from the current beach.) That’s because we’ve been lifted up several hundred feet over the past couple of million years.

Like its predecessor, Curiosity, Perseverance is nuclear-powered[1]! I know Curiosity had a laser to melt rocks with for spectroscopic purposes, I don’t know if Perseverance has the same warmaking capabilities.

[1] The talking-heads during the NASA launch video went into calm-the-folks-down mode when they were telling us about the radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) that provides power for Perseverance and Curiosity. They managed to avoid the word “plutonium” which gets a lot of folks bent out of shape; the RTG uses Pu-238 like all American deep-space mission craft. They did call it a “battery” though which is a pet peeve of mine since it’s a thermally-energised electrical generator rather than a chemical store of electricity.

ESA in Europe are working on using Americium-241 as a RTG heat source — it has some advantages over Pu-238 (cost, production simplicity, availability, generator lifespan etc.) but also disadvantages in terms of mass per watt of electricity produced.

Trump’s going all in on the fascism, talking about how we should delay the election. Who wants to guess that it has to do with internal polling showing that he’s down so badly that it’d be a total wipeout?

Or maybe he thought that this would take attention off the fact that the US economy shrank 33% in Q2? That’s the worst showing since the Great Depression and makes the Great Recession look like a blip.

Or maybe he thought this would take attention off fact that John Lewis is being buried today?

Any way you slice/dice it, the most corrupt and criminal admin in our history has destroyed the economy, killed 150,000+ Americans and there’s still more than 30% of Americans who’d support his reelection. These know nothing fascist enablers are out there - and in Congress, where they continue to do Trump’s bidding (or is it the other way around since Trump’s the one doing what the base wants - he reflects what the base thinks of everyone else).

Congressional GOPers enable the most corrupt and criminal admin in history, and yet there are still Democrats out there who think either that we can still abide by comity and the rules that existed where negotiation and compromise were the rule not an exception or that think that withholding support for the presumptive nominee Biden will somehow advance Democrats’ goals by giving Trump another 4 years to pack the courts, shred the rule of law, and break government and the courts irretrievably and permanently?

Democrats need to take off the gloves, and bring brass knuckles, knives, and goddamned flamethrowers to the fight because Trump’s that kind of mortal threat to the entire nation. The GOP too.

As we continue to see, Trump’s foreign policy actions all inure benefit to our enemies and rivals and we get nothing in return. We are weaker, we are isolated, and we are damaged for it. Putin benefits. China benefits.

All of Trump’s talk about making America great is bulkshit - all of it. We are damaged. Stopping that damage as soon as possible is essential. #GOTV

Mine was in Ponca City, Oklahoma. The downtown area buildings were damaged, though smaller buildings away from downtown were not.

I was using my computer, and my Royal office typewriter started skating across my desk, followed by crap falling out of the cupboards in the kitchen.

I don’t care to go through that again.

Delaying wont change that. He’s again making it clear he doesn’t know that he has no ability to change the date of the election. It’s up to the states. And if his voters stay home, it guarantees that Biden wins in a landslide.

And I’m fine with that.

re: #146 Welcome to The Imbleachment (dangerman)

A lot of us on the East Coast learned that several years ago when a 5.6 hit Washington DC (and damaged the Washington Monument). East Coast quakes travel farther. I felt this one in northeast Massachusetts. I’m on the third floor of a concrete building. The tremor hit around lunchtime and my chair swayed for what seemed like a long time (“this will stop….right?….right?”)

A lot of West Coasters made fun of us for reacting, though this was a bit unfair. Cape Ann—practically next door to me—was hit by a tremor in 1755. (It would probably fuck up my town just as badly as the first quake, if it happens again. Massachusetts has seismic codes but we have a LOT of old buildings on fill, like the Marina District in SF.)

I remember that VA quake - I was in my office in lower Manhattan and first thought it was construction at WTC or a dropped crane load. But the swaying kept going. Weird.

We’re still waiting for a New Madrid big one - and that would cause massive devastation all across the Eastern US. Charleston is also due for a significant quake too (they may have to settle for a few more hurricanes in the immediate future).

My first experience of a noticeable earthquake was being woken up in a hotel room at four in the morning, the day after I arrived in Tokyo for the first time. I felt the room shake and vibrate, thought “Oh, it’s an earthquake. Tokyo, right.” and went back to sleep. The next day it was mentioned on the breakfast TV shows well down the running order of news stories. IIRC it was about 4.5 Richter — the Japanese have a local scale that represents effects felt on the surface (SHINDO) rather than the energy-magnitude Richter scale where a big deep earthquake might not have a lot of effect on the surface.

My concern is how many Republican controlled states, how many states with total Republican control in the legislature (that we’ve seen totally and utterly neuter gubernatorial power because of how completely they’ve controlled the legislature), etc. will go along with the scheme and totally shatter the integrity of the elections. Not prevent them necessarily but enough to create a de facto coup through the courts or military, because, as Wendig has said, what is actually law hasn’t fucking mattered a whole bunch when Trump has gladly shitkicked his way past the law and the only levers of accountabilty for it are owned almost wholesale by his toadies.

It bogles the mind that republicans have been using the crisis to stuff as much money as they can into the pockets of the largest corporations (and dodgy comers). You’d think there would be a conversation like “hey, let’s put in acquisitions for billions in fighter jets and other arms instead of money for state and local governments!” “Are you out of your mind? The American people would go crazy over something so shameful; we’d never get re-elected.” But then the response would be “apparently, you’re not familiar with your base; they’d rather see people starve and go homeless than see them get something ‘free.’”

If Republican states suspend elections in their states, they are also suspending local and state elections. That would damage the state.

Additionally, if they chose to send no electors for President, then they don’t get counted. The Electoral College only counts the certified electors.

The Constitution requires that all Federal government spending be authorised by Congress in a bill. No bill, no money for any Federal spending. The administrative end-run around this 18th century relic is to put necessary spending into any bill that gets put forward in either House regardless of its headline intent in the hope that it will survive the sausage-making process and get signed into law. Yes, most other sensible nations administer their budgets in a simpler and better way but funding=bill is in the Constitution so you Yanks are stuck with it.

The funding for a number of F35A jets in this bill is part of the decades-long purchase process for the F-35 program which will continue into the 2040s. They’re not all being paid for today but in tranches so they are ordered, come off the production line and get put into service a few at a time. No biggie.

This whole ‘delay the election’ dodge will have a shelf life of about an hour.

President Pelosi is now trending big-time on Twitter.

A full 1/3 of our GDP has been lopped off, and that’s what people are going to swing back to.

‘Delay the election? Okay, old man, you go sit down. The economy just fell into the toilet and that’s important.’

It’s the equivalent of a flash-bang. Big noise, bright flash, lasts a few seconds.

I recall a politician once said “It’s the economy, stupid.”

re: #194 Citizen K

There’s this, and it’s arguably true, but let’s remember what Trump is legally able to do or not do has been a line he’s pushed — successfully! — time and time again. Law means nothing without people to hold him to it.

The more it becomes clear that he cannot win, the more he has to subvert, sabotage or discredit the electoral process.

That will prove incredibly easy as we have never faced such a crisis of good faith and honesty in our nation’s history. Nor have we seen a major political party actively colluding with foreign powers to influence and election and suffering no legal or electoral consequences from it

The reaction to that tweet rather worries me… Most countries have some sort of war graves commission or administration service and they are neutral whether the dead they respectfully memorialise were friend or foe. Britain has a number of war graves for German military servicemen and women who died here, airmen who crashed on British soil or PoWs and those graves are as respected as any graves of Allied troops who are interred elsewhere.

The US is littered with the graves of Confederate soldiers who died and were buried where they fell. Showing respect to the fallen regardless of the side they fought on and the cause they fought for is a compassionate act for the living to make, nothing more.

I think maybe the “Stage 4 colon cancer survivor” thing might be a more important factor in the late Mr. Cain’s demise than just his age. Assuming he underwent chemotherapy for the cancer.

Chemo has been noted as a contributing factor to COVID-19 mortality since the beginning: which (AFAIC), would make someone who had had it realize they were much more “at risk”, and take even more precautions to avoid any possible CV infection. But maybe that’s just me.

Sitting here watching the John Lewis funeral, I have a different take on the death of Herman Cain than some. It’s a needless loss, hard on his friends and family. The best care could not save him. The Trump rally killed him.

It’s a really weird morning after a max shot of adrenaline at 4:30 am and probably too much coffee after 7. Actually more surreal than the “ordinary” Trump+plague+crashed economy kind of day.

I had that thought…

Claim he tested positive. Then claim he’s taking hydroxychloroquine. Then claim he’s cured!

I would put nothing past these lying sons of bitches. Nothing.

It could be a false positive. Which will make the Phalanx (I don’t remember the actual name of the drug, so I’m going to use the WWZ name) he is taking that much more annoying to have to deal with.

Reckless endangerment might be possible (I’m not a lawyer) but proving manslaughter would be difficult I would think (but if exposure to a deadly virus was deliberate, then terrorism charges could be brought).

These biomarkers are the proteins that the human immune system produces in response to the presence of the virus and not the actual virus. The goal is to train dogs to detect the disease state before a person starts showing signs of disease such as fever, coughing, and shortness of breath,” Maughan added. …”

That’s what really pisses me off about those who insist that COVID-19 is basically just the flu; the doctors may not have all of the answers yet by a long shot about the long-term effects of the virus on those who do recover, but the things they have found out already (short- and long-term effects, as well as its R0 and mortality figures) scares the fuck out of me.

Cain may have pulled the trigger by going to Trump’s rally unprotected, but Trump handed him the gun by holding the rally to begin with (in addition to his admin’s criminal handling of this whole affair).

Can you imagine having to listen to Trump eulogize someone? That’d be torture on the ears.

“This person loved me so much. He always told me how Great I was. He loved my work. Can you believe the Hoax investigations of me? I am the most investigated and persecuted president ever. Conservatives are being censored and Cancelled? We will Fix.”

Exactly. I was just about to post something similar.

There’s got to be an easier way of replacing him on the ticket… also, I can’t imagine the field day the media would have with a normal president changing out the VP nominee without the VP saying they didn’t want the job anymore

I would normally dismiss it as ludicrous satire - but this IS the Trump Era, so never mind - but I wouldn’t put it past The Orange Anus to at least think about doing a “swap-out” of the VP nominee as a sort of made-for-TV “spectacular” at whatever is left of the RNC: i.e., ostentatiously “firing” Mike Pence right at the start of the Convention, and then milking the “drama” of naming a new nom for Ratings Gold!! for days, which he might probably imagine will boost his flagging campaign.

That means, *checks notes* Merrick Garland gets to weigh in.

If Garland is as good a judge as we believe, he won’t be petty enough to let his treatment by the senate dictate his decision making process

Oh, I could see that happening. But I think if things keep going the way they are going, anything like that at the convention is going to be seen as a stunt and a sign that he’s even further off the rails

When Trump (or more likely his staff) tweet out about Cain’s death, it will be that Cain died of cancer, and Trump signed an Executive Order for an initiative setting up a task force headed by Ivanka that will begin thinking about a cure for cancer because not many people know cancer causes death.

If Trump does that they won’t let him substitute Darling Nikki for Pence.

But they will let him put Gym Jordan on the ticket.

It would be hard to find someone as willing to play second fiddle to Trump as Pence is.

No one else is sufficiently subservient or lacking in flash. Trump would get jealous of Nikki’s attention

re: #340 makeitstop

My counter argument on the thread is this: everybody is staying at home and working from home. Notice there are no concerts, plays, or even appearances. Plus everybody who does go out wear masks. And as for a special secret treatment? Tom Hanks got the corona early-and still has issues. Thankfully he survived so far. But Hollywood and Broadway got the message immediately and shut down production for the most part.

re: #434 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Not only that, but even though some are keeping it on the down low, people are already looking ahead to 2024 and another open nomination race, which happens whether or not Trump gets re-elected. With that in mind, nobody who can win the nomination will accept such a bid. Therefore it’s Pence or nobody for what its worth. Even Sarah Palin probably would turn down the deal-she’s already run for VP once-so why do it again.
