Prepare to Have Your Mind Blown: Marcin Patrzalek, Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 on One Guitar

Famed virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini was so amazing he was rumored to be in league with the devil. I suspect Marcin Patrzalek may have made the same bargain.

You know the song “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” The Devil Went Down To Genoa, and Paganini got the Golden Fiddle.

Decatur Deb  Jul 31, 2020 • 11:57:20am

So here is how it’s going:

1. Montgomery Co. AL has voted to rename schools honoring Jeff Davis, R E Lee, and Sidney Lanier (nature poet, PVT in CSA Army.)
2. AL legislature passed prohibition on renaming/removing memorials.
3. Montgomery sued.
4. AL Supreme Court said fines may not be more than $25,000.
5. Montgomery progressives start fundraiser to pay the fines. $50,000 to date.

IMHO, dump the CSA officials, give the poet a break. The Lanier Poets are a proud monster HS football team. (Note that we have a space and rocket center named for a Nazi who barraged London with V1 and V2.)

Great guitar work there (to say the least): and Marcin is only 18?? Awesome.

Not surprised a Paganini piece “translates” so well to guitar: according to his Wiki, while old Nick was renown as a violinist, his second- (or maybe first-) favorite instrument was the guitar. Though he never played it in public, apparently.

So, I’ve been thinking about this story of the Jared Covid Response and how the White House basically decided “eh, it doesn’t matter, it’s just people in blue states dying.” This might be the best argument for eliminating the electoral college in favor of a popular vote. A president only responsive to the states he can win is a president not representing the nation as a whole.

this is all meaningless nonsense

yes
somethings will be different because of the virus and mailing in ballots

overall though, things will go more or less like every previous election
it will happen on 11/3. On time.
there will be no massive chaos
there will be no catastrophe
there will be official results in a couple of days (as always)
there will likely be no question

even if some states have trouble, even if there are some recounts, even if there are some questions, there will be enough results that it’ll be clear biden won

That’s what Moscow Mitch counts on. I’m not suggesting that Democrats start acting like Republicans, but they count on us to be the grown ups so they can throw their petulant tantrums while they redistribute wealth upward and pack the courts to back their play. To add insult to injury they’ve convinced their voters that anything that negatively impacts them (their voters) is the fault of the Democrats. It’s frustrating as hell and one more reasons why we need to just vote them out.

I definitely like the odds right now. A wave election could push a LOT of toss-up or even lean-R seats our way. I’d love to see Alaska go our way, for instance. Loeffler needs to go in Georgia. Getting rid of Lindsay and Mitch would be gravy, but DELICIOUS gravy. Cornyn doubly so. Shame that neither of the Florida seats is up this year - it feels like it’s the right time in the cycle when Skeletor and Rubio could both be vulnerable.

91
KGxvi  Jul 31, 2020 • 2:35:06pm

This is my favorite thing from the Princeton Election Consortium…

Baseline EV vote: Biden 355-131 with 72 undecided
If Biden overperforms by 3%: 413-119 w/6 undecided (Arkansas!)
If Trump overperforms by 3%: Biden still wins 319-203 with 16 undecided

That 3% is important because that’s about what the polls were off by in 2016.

re: #91 KGxvi

This is my favorite thing from the Princeton Election Consortium…

Baseline EV vote: Biden 355-131 with 72 undecided
If Biden overperforms by 3%: 413-119 w/6 undecided (Arkansas!)
If Trump overperforms by 3%: Biden still wins 319-203 with 16 undecided

That 3% is important because that’s about what the polls were off by in 2016.

God the mid one would be the biggest Dem win since 1964. It would be a huge repudiation of Trump and we need that to eradicate the damage he’s done.

I would hope that Rubio is a big target in 2022. But yeah he’s fortunate he’s not up this time. My hope is Val Demings runs against him assuming she’s not VP or in the cabinet.

If I win the lottery between now and then, I’m either moving to Key West to run against him or at the very least creating a SuperPAC specifically to beat him.

Y’know: this is probably meant as satire, but I wouldn’t take any bets on some GOPer or other (or Trump) making this same asinine “argument” in seriousness, I.e. ”the election is rigged, so we’re going to boycott it!” as an excuse to try to explain away a Blue Tsunami , and delegitimize any (every) elected (D)s, even more than usual.

Ok. I see no downside.

And watch it end up being the one race that determines control of the Senate…

I have a feeling that this year is different, 2018 but even more so. Dems are motivated this year in a way we haven’t seen in a long time. They’ll show up for a runoff if that’s what it takes.

I always hate when Teddy has to take antibiotics or pain killers. They make him sick, and there’s vomit to clean up if I don’t time his eating and taking the pills right. Usually, I feed him chicken and rice, wait about 1-2 hours then give him yogurt and pumpkin after he takes the pill. Luckily, he’s not had to take either very often (3-4 times in his life). Also, Teddy takes pills like a dream. If he’s eating kibble, I can just trow them into his food bowl otherwise it gets squished in some cheese.

I think so. Gotta avoid 2010/14 type years. Not every election will be 2018 but we don’t need to sit home. The job continues in 2021 too. I’m still looking at who to support for Governor. But my early pick is Jennifer McClelland, experienced, fairly young, & an African American woman with a liberal yet pragmatic record. I’d be thrilled to help her and Virginia become the first state to elect two African Americans governors.

In 2010, Karen Bass spoke at dedication ceremony for a Scientology building.

🤔

OK, speaking as someone who has protested and tracked Scientology for over a quarter century, I wouldn’t be especially concerned about her speaking at a Scn dedication 10 years ago. Plus, in LA, it seems like every government official gets roped into one Scientology event before they wise up. It’s the people like former Sheriff Lee Baca and the cops at the precinct local to the Scn buildings in LA (sorry, can’t remember which precinct it is) that have to be looked at carefully. I don’t remember exactly where I read it, but I seem to recall that the recent investigation and indictment of Danny Masterson had to be handled in a different group than the local precinct because the precinct is too close to Scientology.

Tl;dr: one dedication, 10 years ago? Not to worry. Frequent appearances at LA Scn functions—definitely to worry. I’m not worried.

Not surprised a Paganini piece “translates” so well to guitar: according to his Wiki, while old Nick was renown as a violinist, his second- (or maybe first-) favorite instrument was the guitar. Though he never played it in public, apparently.

Just got an email from 23&Me:

Thank you for being one of the 800,000 people who’ve contributed to the 23andMe COVID-19 Study. Our research team is hard at work analyzing the data. So far, preliminary results suggest that people with O blood types are between 9-18% less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19.

While these findings are encouraging, you could help further accelerate our research. Do you know someone who’s been hospitalized with COVID-19? If eligible, their DNA could help scientists search for more possible genetic links to the disease, and potentially help fight it. We’ll supply a 23andMe Health + Ancestry kit at no cost.

I did a quick (REALLY QUICK) search and it appears she has appeared at a number of Scientology grand openings in the LA region, but it appears nothing more recent than 2016. I am less thrilled, but still not especially concerned. What would concern me is if it came out she was taking services at a Scn org. As for her appearances, I’m sure Scn put something on a card and handed it to her as she went up to speak.

I expect that Tony Ortega (the journalist on the Scientology beat) will likely have something about Bass in the next day or so.

ETA: Anyone who has taken services at a Scientology org is RIGHT OUT for a position in government, IMHO. That’s because the process of auditing is designed to get blackmail material. There’s a whole thing called “culling the pre-clear folders” to find dirt. In its own way, Scientology is just as bad as certain authoritarian governments we are aware of.

I early voted in the MN primary elections today in person. The voting location has generous hours 6-7 days a week. There were about a dozen voting booths in the room, and I was the only person there to vote the whole time I was there (I suspected this would be the case). Pens were one-use only and there was lots of hand sanitizer around. I’m planning on doing the same for the general election.

Stopped at a Walgreens on the way home to get some stuff, and mask compliance would have been 100% but some guy walked up to the prescription counter and thought that he needed to take his mask off so the clerk could hear what he was saying. Duh. There was a plexiglass screen between them, so hopefully he didn’t put the clerk at risk. I wonder if he does that in every store that he visits?

I have just enough liberal mennonite left in me to almost sympathize with the “you’re banning church services so you should ban protests” argument. Almost. And probably not from the direction the christianists would argue.

Religion, done right, is a matter of conscience, as is protesting in good faith. Worshiping god is the right thing to do, so you do it. Protesting injustice is the right thing to do, so you do it. Coming out of the anabaptist tradition as I do, there’s a strong flavor of worshiping/doing as your conscience dictates, regardless of risk to yourself.

Of course the comparison breaks down given any kind of rational theology. If I don’t worship in a large group (in person) (indoors) (with no mask on) (in the middle of a pandemic), god is still worshipped. A rational god is going to care for its people, and not demand they perfomatively risk their lives.

A protest where no one shows up is not a protest. The injustice they are protesting is not remediated via no one showing up. I will say that there is an honest moral balancing to be done - am I doing more harm by attending a mass protest than by not protesting?

I could go on about theologies of salvation, of faith versus works, of the never-sufficiently-condemned moral pit of Calvinism, and the abiblical lie of christian magic (which leads to the gross disaster of christian magical thinking)… but as a frothing agnostic it just doesn’t seem worth the effort.

Yeah, it’s real damn shame that the constituents of Republican Party spent so much time and effort handing over power to a tiny number of party cadre elites that then decided it’s okay to just let a bunch of people die.

“Social Media was a mistake”

The problem with that is people think if Facebook and Twitter weren’t things, everything would be sunshine and rainbows.

They are just the latest biggest versions of something that’s existed since dialup modems, and BBSes.

There were “communities” that formed and grew on BBSes, USENET, chat rooms on AOL, Prodigy, and Compuserve. They were just as toxic back then too, only limited by the numbers with access to them. A huge portion of the militia assholes and Alex Jones style conspiracy theory crazies became such because of shit they read on USENET groups. If it wasn’t for the Internet as it was in the 90s I might have never dabbled in crazy Libertarian land at all and might have saved myself years of being on “the wrong side” before coming back to my senses.

You could say. “The Internet was a mistake” and I think the number of ways it makes things better far outweighs the problems. The problems exist only because the damn thing was invented by tech nerds with little imagination on how it could be abused. Practically every security and privacy mechanism built into the Internet was something added way later because “oh shit…”

We have to continue tweaking it, not just ditch it.
