Passed on by my dad:

This test has only one question, but it’s a very important one. By giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. The test features an unlikely and completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a decision. Only you will know the results, so remember that your answer needs to be completely honest.

THE SITUATION:You are in Palm Beach with chaos all around you caused by a hurricane. There is a flood of biblical proportions. You are a photojournalist working for a major newspaper, and you’re caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless. You’re trying to shoot career-making photos. There are houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the water. Nature is unleashing all its destructive fury.

THE TEST: Suddenly you see a man in the water. He is fighting for his life trying not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer. Somehow this man looks like…WOW —- it’s Donald Trump. At the same time you realize the raging waters are about to take him under forever

YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS: You can save the life of Donald Trump, OR you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer-Prize-winning photo, documenting the last minute of one of the world’s most powerful and evil men who is hell-bent on destroying the USA.

YOUR DECISION:
OK. Here’s the question, and please give an honest answer:

Would you: ( A) select high contrast color film, or ( B) go with the classic simplicity of black and white.

hi

In Nebraska, our daily new cases of Covid running average has been steadily climbing since June 20. We are approaching the all-time high single day we had in May.

Someone messed up the so-called dashboard map of running cases by county, which shows the local area map today from Detroit to Salt Lake City.

Statewide yesterday we had 445 cases, with a total of 26,211.
Deaths were 8, with a total of 332.
Hospital beds available statewide are 36%.
experience.arcgis.com

If local hospitals get overrun in Omaha, Lincoln, and North Platte, some people might be moved out here where I live.

Locally, in the Panhandle, cases are declining the highs at the end of July, but are still higher than they were since the beginning of that month.
We had 4 new cases, with a total of 432.
Deaths remain unchanged at 6.
Hospital beds available are at 42%.
There are 53 active cases, 4 of which are in my county.
pphd.org

To our south in Weld County, Colorado, they have re-opened some county buildings for normal business. Cases are rising in a linear fashion there.
They have 3,523 cumulative cases (+15).
They have 92 deaths, the last on June 27.

But it’s not just Trump — it’s his base which absolutely detests people of color. Trump cannot understand how an African American can be more respected and loved world-wide than he is. He didn’t sign up for the mockery and ridicule that follows him everywhere; he believed that his election would finally gain him the reverence he was seeking his entire life. He does get that adoration from his base, but not from the elites who never accepted him.

The only sympathy I can muster now are for those who they come in contact with who didn’t ask for this.

The people who went to the Tulsa rally asked for this. They even signed (questionably enforceable) waivers.

If they want to die as martyrs to their faith, I am not going to stand in their way. As a matter of fact, to the greatest extent possible I will avoid contact with any person who identifies as a conservative unless I see their actions comport with reality, not their faith in conservatism.

That craving for respect is a major motivator for Trump. He’s always wanted to be taken seriously by Manhattan’s high society set and they see him as a loud-mouthed buffoon, a “short-fingered vulgarian” (to use a famous phrase) - and that eats him up inside. Sure, he gets adulation from the masses who attend his rallies….but that’s nowhere near the same for him; it’s a poor substitute for the real respect he seeks, but will never have.

Data from today:

worldometers.info

318 fatalities, but 96 are Unaccounted, which are death certificates with COVID-19 as the cause, which were not previously reported to the DHHS. These will be pasesd to the counties as they are processed.

We are right now at 7,000 deaths, and projections for November 1st put us at 24,000 if we don’t have a state-wide mask requirement.

I’d be surprised if it happens. That’s just under a 1% fatality rate statewide.

It’s just a Del Rio dog fight between sane and insane people. It’s a pretty even split, politically. The urban/suburban people are terrified. The rural folks are mostly just hold my beer.

You haven’t made a political issue out of medicine and evidence. Both stand against conservative faith.

It is impossible at this late stage of this nonsense for any conservative politicians to do the right thing and say they were wrong, or even dodge the responsibility portion and just say “we know more about this now and this is what you should do.” Their own voters would tear them apart.

It is why there can never be a centrist candidate in the GOP, only further right and conspiratorial. They’ve trained their voters to think this way for fifty years.

On Earth-2:

“Today marks six months since the Covid-19 outbreak was recognized as beginning in the US, and the third month of Congressional hearings into the controversial response by the Clinton administration that has seen over 5,000 deaths due to the virus so far. Today’s hearing featured testimony from Dr. Deborah Birx, whose criticism of measures taken by the White House to impose masks and social distancing on the public was focused squarely on embattled expert Dr. Anthony Fauci. These policies, which remain the subject of hotly-contested legal battles due to their being put in place through executive orders and not legislation, have been blamed for the economic downturn that has seen millions of job losses and a rapidly rising homelessness rate.

Republican leaders cited Dr. Birx’s testimony as further evidence that the White House attempted to ‘hype’ the danger of Covid-19 to the public in order to drawn attention away from this past winter’s impeachment over Russian collusion and the controversial ‘Steele dossier.’ And that when they failed to convince Congressional Republicans of the urgency of the issue, the White House attempted to bypass Congress through executive orders and ‘politicizing’ the matter through instructions from the Center for Disease Control and Health and Human Services to enforce masks and social distancing on the public. House Speaker Paul Ryan was quick to deny that Republicans are opposed to such measures, but emphasized President Clinton’s refusal to personally make a case for them. And stated that until she is willing to appear before Congress to do so, they will not consider any legislation from the White House or allow funding for such in their own efforts to help the millions suffering from the economic crash.

The White House has responded that while the president will not call a Joint Session, as she feels such is unnecessary to address the present crisis, she has invited both Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to the White House for a discussion on how best to proceed with legislation in Congress. As of this hour, offices for both have not made issued official statements, however inside sources say such a meeting is unlikely as both feel this should be a discussion conducted in the open and not ‘behind closed doors.’”

This is the big reason why there has to be Congressional hearings next year, regardless of whether or not the Dems want them: If there are no legal consequences of the actions of this administration, then the next Republican to win will not even bother paying lip service to the law as their work to impose a dictatorship upon this nation.

Kara Eastman is unleashing a barrage of adverts against US Rep. Don Bacon (NE-2) in Omaha’s television and radio markets to kick off her campaign to unseat him. Mrs. Eastman is a small business owner in Omaha. Her signature issue is Medicare-for-All, while Don Bacon is arguing she wants to destroy private insurance.

Don Bacon won with 51% of the vote in 2018 over her, with no Libertarian candidate in that race. The race was seen by all pollsters as “Safe R.”

This time around Don Bacon has about $1,000,000 in his campaign war chest, while Kara Eastman has about $400,000. Most polls show the district “Toss-up” with a few showing “Lean R.”

Her first advert will show the destruction of her late mother’s estate and savings in the wake of her medical bills, and relate that to others in the district with similar problems.

The Libertarian Primary only had one candidate, Dennis Grace, an insurance claims investigator. Mr. Grace took 1,047 votes in the primary.

Lori Alexander (The Transformed Wife) is a toxic Christian with huge following. She argues for an old-fashioned American society (women in the home raising children, never mind she went to college). She also frequently retweets neo-Nazis from her feed.

She is promoted by a bunch of Christian apologists on YouTube such as Paul & Morgan (who argue against pre-marital sex even though they both admit it themselves). [Sidenote: Paul & Morgan are about to become marriage counsellors and political commentators.]

College does not promote proper spelling amongst wingnuts, however. Mrs. Alexander is now all-in on a conspiratorial cabal of “someones” preventing doctors from promoting hydroxycloroquine because “reasons.”

She also argues all marriages which fail are the wife’s fault, and the wife should submit in all things, as the Bible advises. She is an insidious version of Phyllis Schaffley with millions of followers on social media.

School Reopening Plans Firm Up (Western Nebraska Observer, Kimball, Nebr.)

The noteworthy thing about this article of the school board of Potter-Dix School district is the large crowd in the photograph (it appears to be about one hundred). The other noteworthy thing is about four people are wearing masks.

I predict Potter-Dix school will close not too long after it opens. They will assign seats on school buses to make contact tracing easier, and the school board says the best way to keep school open is to keep home your children “if they are sick.” (Non-professionals are still not acknowledging asymptomatic spread around here.)

The board pointed out if someone does become ill with Covid-19, only the people required by law will be prevented from entering the school, so school can remain open.

They will encourage social distancing (meaning they won’t mandate it). No mention of masks (they caved to Gov. Ricketts’s threats).

On the subject of masks and mask orders, I don’t remember if I mentioned this (it’s been a LONG two weeks), but after my governor’s mandatory mask order finally came through, the church sent an official email that gave me much hope. “We will comply with the governor’s order,” it read, “and when attending one of our in-person services, masks will be required in the building. We will continue to maintain a maximum capacity of 25%, less than the 50% that is permitted by the governor. If you are not comfortable with wearing a mask in church, we encourage you to avail yourself of one of our multiple online service offerings, or our new in-home village churches.”

The Salon article details each of the connections of the testaments to the state GOP, the state legislature, or Susan Collins herself.

One of them:

In July, Collins’ Facebook page featured a testimonial from former GOP State House member Kathleen Chase, who has recently dismissed the science behind COVID-19 safety guidelines. That same month, Chase shared a Facebook post calling on Americans to “fight back” against public health guidelines such as wearing masks and practicing social distancing, which the post claimed were put in place so the government could “rule over” citizens.

WFPD: Man stole three live hand grenades

Does the ceramic elephant make it a political crime?

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Wichita Falls Police recover numerous items from a burglary on Princeton Avenue that occurred in July, including a large amount of ammunition and three live hand grenades.

One man is charged at this point, Matthew Kowalski, 48, whos jail records show has 24 arrests including three for theft.

Police said they received a Crime Stoppers tip on July 15 about a burglary on Princeton and that Kowalski and another man had taken numerous items from storage buildings in the back, including three live hand grenades, a large amount of ammunition, and black powder.

Police said they found three storage buildings open and ransacked.

Still unexplained is how and why the original victim had live grenades in a storage unit in Wichita Falls.

If it was true, we’d have been immune to everything from measles to smallpox. What got those diseases under control was vaccinations.

For viruses like Ebola, SARS, and MERS, it was aggressive contact tracing and quarantine.

This. x100.

However, the sad and inescapable fact (in the US anyway), is that a simpleminded and misinterpreted notion of “herd immunity”* may indeed be quackery, but is it is quackery which offers what appears to be a quick-and-easy solution to a terrible national health issue. And a “solution” which appeals to all too many citizens by hitting right in one of this country’s hugest (national) personality flaws: i.e. that Americans will show enormous resilience, courage and dedication to common goals and defeating problems; as long as our daily lives aren’t interrupted or inconvenienced too much.

* Maybe I am not interpreting the term right, but ISTM that when I hear the uninformed/ignorant (like, say, GOP politicians) use the term “herd immunity”, they do not mean it in the usual epidemiological sense, but are in fact, referring to something more like simple “Darwinian selection”: i.e., the entire population should be exposed to SARS-CoV-2, people will either get it or not, those that get it will either die (too bad, so sad) or not, and/or everyone else will be immune. End of story, and we can all get back to crowding into bars and beaches like God intended…..

It really says a lot for one’s view of “patriotism” if it cannot stand up to criticism. If you cannot look at a person kneeling in protest without feeling anger and hate, then you are not a “patriot.” You’re an authoritarian who cannot stand any display that challenges your blind faith.

Couldn’t sleep, so finished Mary Trump’s book during the night. It is a real page-turner. I did feel sympathy for him when he was 2 1/2. By the time he was 10, that was all in the past. His parents (esp. father) were both dysfunctional, if not mentally ill, but not every child in his position would have taken the glory offered with the malicious gusto DT did. It was nature and nurture, in my opinion. I still hate him with every fiber of my being.

She is quite clear that the deaths of over 100,000 Americans (and growing) are on him directly, and on his weak sycophants. She must have finished the prologue right before publication. And the whole book reads like it was written in a fantastic hurry. With a lot at stake.

Open enrollment for the ACA’s Medicaid Expansion in Nebraska went live this morning.

dhhs.ne.gov

That ends the standoff between Governor Ricketts and the voters. Applications are also permitted by mail or by telephone.

Librarians across the state were trained as facilitators to help people sign up when the ACA was first enacted. The state did not operate its own exchange primarily because of our low population.

I’ve tried various ways of using it, but always get the same results except for once when it read 96 point something. I think it’s going to get returned on Monday.

Curious about this alleged coin shortage that keeps coming up in the news, I asked the general store owner about it while I was there. Was he aware of it?

Mine is branded BBLove. I got it from Staples. It was marked down 50% but it had lots of good reviews. From what I’ve seen generally in customer comments, buying an infrared thermometer is kind of a crap-shoot, so I was prepared for disappointment. I’ll look up the Kinsa.

Richard Nixon’s campaign made it so, to contrast from unpatriotic liberals. We know how patriotic Richard Nixon was.

Not many people dress up in anything beyond farm clothes here. When I sat on the village board I would either use my Gold Star Family pin or my Navy Achievement Medal lapel pin. I also wear them at formal functions such as the village Memorial Day service or the county Veterans Day service, or the village Independence Day parade.

Governor Ricketts indicates despite the rise in cases in the Nebraska Panhandle, we will remain in Phase Three of his so-called Directed Health Measures.

Phase Three is designed to spread Covid-19 far-and-wide, allowing most activities to proceed as normal.

The indoor gathering limit is also designed to allow schools to be open.

Bold turkeys.

‘Bold’ is their middle name.

It’s one thing to yield to a red light or a pedestrian — it’s another to yield to a group of 25-pound birds whose feathers aren’t too ruffled by the honking.

What might have been a bizarre experience a couple decades ago is now a fairly commonplace occurrence for Bryn Mawr resident Peter Redmond, who consistently sees flocks of six or more wild turkeys on his drive to and from nearby cities…

…However, while there’s plenty to make a flock of turkeys stay, there’s not much to drive them out. In urban areas, wild turkeys, as large as they are, have few natural predators.

“They’re also a little more on the aggressive side, so they’ll be chasing other birds and wildlife away,” Mayntz said. “Dogs, cats, skunks or raccoons can prey on eggs, but the adult turkeys — there’s nothing really to stand in their way.”

Mail carriers, commuters and even law enforcement officers have found that out the hard way.

Even when they manage to stay out of the road, wild turkeys can dig up landscaping, scratch vehicles and attack pets or humans.

“In a lot of places, especially ones with homeowners associations, a flock of wild turkeys coming to a backyard feeder or just visiting a garden isn’t exactly going to be welcome,” Mayntz said. “In many cases, it’s just a good idea to leave them be. Don’t encourage them.”

According to Mayntz, flocks will typically move on if their food sources are removed. If a bird becomes troublesome, said Mayntz, call your local wildlife official. Mostly though, the best thing to do is to just leave it to its own devices.

“It’s not worth agitating that bird to get a selfie,” Mayntz said.

Image a group of 20 female grad students endlessly mocking and ripping the book apart (FYI, that was the purpose of us reading it not that the prof agreed with the book). The one thing I remember from the book was that if you’re traveling with your husband, never give directions or tell him you’re going the wrong way. How does being lost for hours help anything? The same week we read that book, we were also assigned a Christian home school American history textbook.

Wisconsin began mandatory masking today. The GOP “leadership” is shrieking like howler monkeys and yet up here in a relatively untouched and conservative part of the state, I’m seeing pretty good compliance. I went over to the farm supply store because needed a cheap set of Allen wrenches. Place was fairly busy but people were, trying to separate and I saw only two people in the whole place not wearing a mask.

This is going to continue to bite the GOP in the ass because people aren’t willing to die for them.

Polling suggests that more Republicans agree with masking than not (I’ve seen a 60/40 split). It’s just that pesky “silent majority” (i.e., vocal minority) that are being oppressed by wearing a mask to keep society safe.

When I was getting my MA, I took a women’s history course. One of the assigned books was The Transformed Wife.

I presume “The Transformed Wife” and the homeschooling book assigned for their comedic value?

The village clerk here owns a bed-and-breakfast in town. She is divorced from the gun shop owner, but is still friendly with him.

One morning she awoke at the bed-and-breakfast to a whole herd (pod? murder? conspiracy?) of turkeys attacking her back door. She called the gun shop owner to save her; he came over with a canned air horn and drove them off.

Gosh. Seems like that would have been a good opportunity to fill the entire town’s freezers for Thanksgiving…

No, what determines reopening rates is the concentration of Republicans in state legislatures and school boards. School protocols are being set by conservative theology, not whether or not there are a bunch of no-maskers (which directly correlate to the number of Republicans in charge).

I never wear a flag pin.

Hmm . My theory was that it was Johnny Cochran that recently popularized the lapel pin messaging with his Cross prominently displayed to the jury in the famous OJ trial. The right wing noticed it, hijacked the flag with it, and it became the jingoistic display we have now.

Unfortunately, I had to be on the road most of yesterday, and when I stopped for gas or eats, in the bluer parts of central Illinois, there were crowds of teenagers, no masks, close together and acting like nothing was changed from last year.

And I have to do it again today.

My Pippi developed the World’s Record cat abscess. I’ve had cats for 65 years, and treated a bazillion cat abscesses, but this one just kept getting bigger. Was afraid she had ruptured. No local vet had time for us, so I drove across state to the University of Illinois Vet School. They have done a good job, I think, but are afraid that damaged tissue is going to become necrotic. So I am driving back today for them to take out the packing and redo it. I’d show you a photo, but it would make everyone sick. Poor Pippi! At least they sent pain meds that keep her drowsy, so she doesn’t fight the collar of embarrassment.

For me, it goes beyond whether someone personally wore a mask. Both Cain and Gohmert decided not to wear a mask and also used their influence and platforms to turn not wearing a mask as a symbol of support for Trumpco. They endangered not just the people they came into contact with; they endangered us all.

?bahookie? Somehow that doesn’t add a lot of gravitas to the tweet. Or the tweeter.

eta - changed to ‘tweeter’ to clarify.

Trump is the end result of so many bad ideologies.

And is bahookie a modest word. I think it would be more modest to demurely say “down there.”

Not making joke about a pike in cases, only because I can’t come up with one

I can remember going to see the week’s record Muskie on ice on one of our vacations in northern Wisconsin (where we went every year when I was a child). I wouldn’t want to meet one in the water. Shudder. I caught a barracuda once off the coast of Florida. My dad wanted to mount a trophy fish, but he caught a huge grouper. grin

So he mounted my fish (hanging above my desk as I write). The Muskie made my ‘cuda look dainty.

Gosh. Seems like that would have been a good opportunity to fill the entire town’s freezers for Thanksgiving…

Problem with wiping out a turkey flock is that once you do so they are gone. You get one holiday’s worth of birds for a bunch of people - and none after that.

This happened to the flock that used to live in the gully behind my house. Unscrupulous idiot hunters wiped them out rather than thinking about the future, taking 1 or 2, and leaving the rest to generate more turkeys like they are wont to do.

50 years ago, I worked for a couple of summers at a Boy Scout camp along the Tionesta Reservoir in Northern Pennsylvania. There were spots where the water was so clear that you could see to the bottom. Often one could see the muskellunge swimming along. (Nebraska Bridge area particularly.) Some of them appeared to be close to 6 feet in length. However, I did not hear of anybody getting eaten by one.

Somehow I am reminded of the old joke in Russia Canada, fish eat you.

Pike? Oh, yeah, a Muskie. Technically a pike but bigger, hungrier and dumber. Much like certain sharks, it’ll try to eat anything it can get into it’s mouth.

A couple of years ago a guy was in a boat dangling his feet in the water while his buddy fished. A musky attacked his foot and did some fairly serious damage. To add insult to literal injury, he was cited by the DNR for fishing without a license … (I don’t remember but I hope the citation was thrown out).

Women still blaming women for rape and assault. This shit won’t become rare until men begin holding each other accountable. I mean like in your face, oh hell no, accountable.

I’ve been watching I’ll Be Gone In The Dark. More than one victim said they didn’t tell family and friends because of the shame, one had parents who never told a soul, even their own parents and other family members and were not happy with her for reporting the rape. One described being asked what she was doing, inside her own house, to provoke the attack. She was sitting at a vanity putting on makeup, while the rapist was spying on her. There is still so much shame attached to rape, for female and male victims, for different reasons, but the shame is still there. One couple interviewed just broke my heart. The husband was hogtied, beaten and told if he even moved(there were dishes placed on his back so the rapist could tell if he tried to escape) his wife would die. Instead he had to listen to her being raped in another room. He had friends who couldn’t understand why he didn’t go all macho and try to save her. While hogtied in the next room.

Women like this asshole make rape easier to dismiss and excuse as “it’s just sex, it’s no big deal.” It is, no matter who, what or where. The why is on the rapist, not the victim. To suggest otherwise is fucking evil.
