re: #301 Teddy’s Person

And is bahookie a modest word. I think it would be more modest to demurely say “down there.”

“Devil’s playground.”

Portland, Maine Press-Herald:

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean prosecutors have arrested the elderly leader of a secretive religious sect as part of an investigation into allegations the church hampered the government’s anti-corfonavirus response after thousands of worshipers were infected in February and March.

Prosecutors are questioning 88-year-old Lee Man-hee over charges that the Shincheonji Church of Jesus hid some members and under-reported gatherings to avoid broader quarantines.

More than 5,200 of the South Korea’s 14,336 confirmed virus cases have been linked to the church.

South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Saturday reported 31 more confirmed cases of COVID-19. At least 23 of the cases were tied to international arrivals.

Witches And Demons, by JM Ashby on Bob Cesca.

Meanwhile, housing experts say up to 40 million people could be evicted from their homes soon, a significant number of whom (up to 25 million) could lose their homes in just the next month. Republicans wasted the entire summer and left Washington without passing anything.

Finally, officials say the Trump regime has scant planning in the works for actually distributing a vaccine once one is finally ready.

“We have not heard anything from the federal government since April 23,” Danielle Koenig, health promotion supervisor for the Washington State Department of Health, said in an email.

Immunization experts along with state and local public health officials sent a letter here to Operation Warp Speed on June 23 pleading for fresh guidance.

States need to know promptly if the federal government will pay for the vaccines, as it did during the H1N1 outbreak in 2009, the letter says. Will alcohol swabs, syringes and personal protective equipment be included? What about record-keeping and refrigeration to store the vaccine and who will deliver it?

Today I was going to watch the whole line-up of Cooking shows on WHYY. During the first one “My Greek Table” the signal went out. For some reason I decided to rescan. After a few hours I got most of my favorite channels back except WHYY. I was experimenting with the antenna cord by taping it up when the whole thing came crashing down onto the the floor including the TV. So now I have no TV. I ordered one over amazon and it is supposed to come on Monday. I really hate 2020.

Not making joke about a pike in cases, only because I can’t come up with one

Pike? Oh, yeah, a Muskie. Technically a pike but bigger, hungrier and dumber. Much like certain sharks, it’ll try to eat anything it can get into it’s mouth.

A couple of years ago a guy was in a boat dangling his feet in the water while his buddy fished. A musky attacked his foot and did some fairly serious damage. To add insult to literal injury, he was cited by the DNR for fishing without a license … (I don’t remember but I hope the citation was thrown out).

Size differences… Keepers on the best Musky lakes have to be 50” long (~17 years old). World record was 61” and 67 lbs.

I’m not much into fishing but around here you kinda have to know it. The worlds record musky is stuffed and on display in a bar about a mile from where I type this.

I’m for severely regulating stock trading of elected officials. I don’t think it would be legal to ban them outright, or force them to sell all their shares when they’re elected, but the endless GOP trading on insider information from regulations and Senate and House hearings needs to stop. That grift right there is worth more than their salaries.

Yes, by the STOCK Act signed into law by President Obama in 2012 amending the 1934 Securities and Exchange Act. That act was passed after a 2011 “60 Minutes” piece detailing the rampant insider trading going on in Congress from congressional information. The previous 1934 SEC Act did not prohibit Congress from trading on such information.

The Act relies on each house of Congress to discipline its members, which is why Kelly Loeffler has not been disciplined: Mitch McConnell will not bring an ethics charge against a Republican, nor consider one brought by a Democrat against her.

It also relies on voters to “punish” the offender by removing them at the next election.

Then-Representative James Garfield wrote in 1877 regarding insider trading: “Now, more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand those high qualities to represent them in the national legislature.”

The House and Senate can enact any punishment from a censure to expulsion from the body. They may not impose criminal penalties.

In theory, members are required to publish an annual accounting of their trades. That just means the member profits from dubious trades and the voters can do fuque-all about it after the fact.

The STOCK Act is largely seen as “for show.”

Meanwhile in the Big Apple, also from TMZ:

Man Paints Over ‘BLM’ Mural Out Front … Busted by NYPD

A NYC man was so intent on painting over the Black Lives Matter street mural in front of Trump Tower … not even cops pulling him off the ground was gonna slow him down.

This wild incident went down earlier this week in the Big Apple, right in front of Trump’s signature building and residence on 5th Avenue — where a giant ‘BLM’ street mural was recently etched and painted right out front. It was vandalized … again.

The camera starts rolling right in the middle of the action, with the guy in question on his hands and knees … frantically trying to spread white and red paint over the yellow ‘BLM’ lettering. He’s literally spreading it with his own limbs, and doesn’t care who’s watching.

Eventually, some NYPD cops roll up and put a stop to it. Even when the responding officer gets right up in his face and tries yanking him up, the guys keeps at it — smearing every last drop he can. It’s insane … eventually, more cops come and restrain him.

The officers also shoo off the people that are recording, but we get the gist of it. BTW, the guy kicks a paint can as he’s being led away … perhaps as his final act of defiance.

They note it’s the fourth time it’s been vandalised since it was created on July 9.

There are some awful angry conservatives who are triggered by some highway paint where they don’t live.

Two things:

1) Donald Trump does not have the power to ban TikTok via executive order. He simply does not have the power. Banning an application like TikTok, which consists of LOTS of First Amendment-protected activity, is just going to spawn a shitton of lawsuits.

Just letting Trump unilaterally ban TikTok sets us up for Trump banning other stuff. Thus, this must be resisted.

2) That said, I would not use TikTok, period end of story. I don’t want to be one of those paranoid people, but when your evil, too big to fail employer (which is all about MAKING THE MONEY) tells people to take an application off their work phones, you know this is serious business.

(CNN Business)Wells Fargo has banned the social media app TikTok from company devices amid what it says are concerns about security.

In a statement to CNN Business on Monday, a Wells Fargo spokesperson said the company had identified a “small number of employees with corporate-owned devices who had installed the TikTok application.”

“Due to concerns about TikTok’s privacy and security controls and practices, and because corporate-owned devices should be used for company business only, we have directed those employees to remove the app from their devices,” the statement said.

I suppose it depends on who you are and what broker you use. I confess to knowing very little about the stock market.

In the last conservative-generated recession, my wife (before she met me) lost all her investments (primarily stocks), about $250,000.

Today our meager savings (a small fraction of that) are in savings and checking accounts (which we are considering cleaning out before a banking collapse) and a safe-deposit box (small valuables).

Anchorage Daily News, on Christians trying to kill those of us with epilepsy:

The Alaska Supreme Court has affirmed a lower court decision that removed an elderly woman from the care of her daughter after the daughter declined to treat the woman’s epilepsy and said she would use prayer to treat her, even in a medical emergency.

The daughter, identified in the decision as “Rachel O.,” argued the prior decision amounted to religious discrimination because she cares for her mother — identified as “Tiffany O.” — “based on the tenets of religion instead of how the state wants her cared for.”

The court disagreed, writing in a unanimous ruling that “by depriving her mother of personal care services and emergency services in favor of prayer, Rachel not only fails to satisfy the essential requirements (of state law), but also puts Tiffany’s health and safety at risk.”

When my wife and I get old enough that we will need someone to manage our health care, we have no family to do that. I presume my mother will be gone by then.

That is a conundrum for us.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Aug 1, 2020 • 2:10:46pm

Though the internet has made information more available than ever, the hard reality is that humans are more concerned about being popular than have a grasp on truth.

Case in point: science videos on Youtube.

Now here is a person with some integrity, who when discovered he made a conceptual error, decided to correct it:

Why I Deleted My Last Video [Learning From Mistakes]

(most people get cosmology wrong because it’s hard and is usually poorly explained.)

But, there are so many other channels, which are much more popular, and they become popular because of fancy graphics, music, etc. They are science-y, but often pretty shallow or misleading. Some presenters try, they do try, while others just are putting on a show.

Recently on one very popular channel I made a comment correcting some explanation - it definitely misconstrued some phenomenon and had graphics that were clearly just wrong (in the physics sense.) Pedant that I am, I wrote a comment describing what was wrong.

Now the comment was not deleted. But it got no “likes”. Ok, I’m not in this for the money. Yet the video has well over half a million views so far, and very many comments. But most of the comments are quite … internet-juvenile. It seems people are entertained by the video, but they really are there for the entertainment, not for the knowledge.

While it doesn’t surprise, it brings home (again) that people really just want to be entertained, not to learn. And this is what cable networks also learned, many channels which start out with noble goals end up running Hitler-is-an-alien crap.

So this is our society.

And this is why the likes of Trump has gotten as far as he did.

Name the first nuclear weapons test carried out after you were born, with yield (if any) and any other special features.

For me it was a Soviet nuclear torpedo warhead test carried out on dry land, yield was a piddling 1.2 ktonnes. No codename, just a series number (19) because the Soviets didn’t have great codenames like Upshot-Knothole and Wigwam for their tests.

I was too young to remember it, so I had to go look it up. /s

Operation Nougat (Wikipedia)

This test series was underground tests. They were a response to the Soviet Union leaving the initial test ban agreed on between them and the USA. The Soviet test was the Tsar Bomba (the first test anywhere after I was born).

The first test of the series was the first nuclear test after my birthday, using the W-45 warhead. That warhead was developed for small detonations, such as the MGR-3 Little John artillery rocket.

The yield of the test shot was 2.6 kilotons, and caused 7,800 TBq of fallout when it vented out of the tunnel. The test shot was 2,254 metres underground.

RDS-1, 29 August 1949, 22Kt, the very first Soviet nuclear test. I was two months and eight days old.
There had been six US nuclear tests before this (not including Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which were not tests ). The last (Sandstone Zebra) had been on April 15 1948). The next US test was Ranger-Able on 27 January 1951).

“…In economics, an externality is a cost or benefit that affects a party who did not choose to incur that cost or benefit. Negative externalities are a well-known feature of the “tragedy of the commons”. For example, driving cars has many negative externalities; these include pollution, carbon emissions, and traffic accidents. Every time ‘Person A’ gets in a car, it becomes more likely that ‘Person Z’ - and millions of others - will suffer in each of those areas.[15] Economists often urge the government to adopt policies that “internalize” an externality.”

I think that might cover up a floor fight if Trump is trying to replace Pence with someone else though. The GOP certainly doesn’t want that broadcast. /tinfoil

A more reasonable explanation would be they were absolutely determined to have an in-person convention and that utterly failed in the face of reality. They had no backup plan whatsoever because why make one? So they fall back on the smoke-filled room convention because the press being there would show the crapfest to the world.

I have been meaning to say: those people who recommended air fryers were so right. Anymouse and a couple of other people I think. My DH has been making wings in his and they are divine. I am not usually a fan of wings because they tend to be soggy and overspilled, but these are crispy and delicious.

He has also made buttermilk fried chicken and I have to quietly admit it is as good as my mom’s maybe better

My wife uses her air fryer all the time. You can make all sorts of stuff in it, and it’s very easy to clean.

I’m going to go take a nap. I’ll catch y’all later.

I’ve lived in Japan for one to two year stints several times in my life. One of the first things I do is visit a pawn shop and buy a simple nylon string guitar. There are lots of them because they use them in school music classes and somehow get on the market. Anyway, I love how rough and ready they can be. Edited to add: I forgot the most important thing: in those days the top price was about $50 (5,000 yen).

Ketchup is never refrigerated in restaurants and in shelf stable. It’s highly acidic, so it’s safe to keep out.

There was a restaurant in Boulder that petitioned the heath department to allow them to not refrigerate their spaghetti sauce. Health Dept. tested it and determined it was acidic enough to keep out.

When I go window shopping on Reverb I always look at the Japanese shops. They’ve got those vintage ‘lawsuit’ guitars (Greco, Burny, etc.) for really good prices. But then they want a couple hundred in shipping and I realize that in total they’d cost pretty much the same as if I’d buy one here.

Do none of you people make your own mayo? It’s super easy. I don’t separate out the yolk from the egg, none of that drizzle the oil in stuff. I just put 2 c of oil, 1/4 c cider vinegar, 2 tsp salt, 1 tsp dry mustard, dash cayanne, 2 eggs into a wide mouth quart jar. Use the immersion blender on it, cap it, refrigerate it. Sometimes the Big Guy likes to use Chinese 5 spice instead of the cayanne. You can change out the vinegars, use light olive oil, however you like. Super easy.

I grew up with Miracle Whip (and “oleo”) because… I still don’t know why. I like Hellman’s. it does the job. When I lived in the south everyone told me how much better Duke’s is. It’s fine. That’s all. Hellman’s does the job.

Mom was born and raised in South Carolina. Every time we went to visit family in Myrtle Beach we’d go shopping for Duke’s Mayo and Planters Peanut Butter. Couldn’t get either one in Pittsburgh. But a dollop of Dukes on a home grown sliced tomato…mmmmmmm!

Growing up my neighbor grew big beefsteak tomatoes, and come harvest time, he’d provide us with fresh tomatoes. We’d go to Ruth and Harry’s (the local diner/bakery) get some homemade bread to toast for sammies. One slice of tomato covered the entire piece of bread. I miss George’s tomatoes.

But not actually broadcasting the important bits of the convention? I just don’t get that at all. Has that even happened in almost a century? I know the conventions were on radio back in the day. That sounds like someone is tanking.

There’s between 35 million and 45 million unemployed. And 5 million job openings. What kind of incentive does he think is going to bridge that gap? We tried giving money to businesses to incentivize them to keep everyone on payroll; they took the money and fired everyone anyway.

As has been said above, those evicted from their homes will lose their franchise— and creating a large homeless population will allow the GOP retain their grasp on this nation. This is deliberate and not just an accidental byproduct of their desire to use the relief bills to help the wealthy.

Your analysis assumes that all 30 million are Democrats.

Wilford Brimley has passed away, he was 85

Never forget, that when Wilford Brimley portrayed an “Old Guy” in ‘Cocoon’ he was 8 years younger than Tom Cruise is now.

re: #385 mmmirele

Well, my brother is pissed off at me.

He told me some bullshit about how the Dems held up a bill to restore the increase in unemployment compensation and I told him the reason (it was *weird*, something about having to wait a week) made no sense whatsoever. I then told him he needed to stop watching Fox News and OAN.

At that point he said “Fuck you,” turned off the TV and stomped out of the living room to his bedroom.

I was over there six more hours and he didn’t emerge from his bedroom at all. *rolls eyes*. That said, I did help my mother vote her ballot and then ran the ballot over to the community college, where a dozen socially distanced people in an auditorium, all wearing masks and face shields, were happy to watch me stick it in the ballot box. Oh, and the door to the auditorium was wide open in 112 degree heat.

Should I apologize to him? My first inclination is always to apologize, to smooth things over, but I don’t think I was lying. I’m tired of this bullshit.

I say no. You can’t get anywhere if someone refuses to discuss issues in good faith. He was the one who stormed out. But that’s just my opinion and it’s that not worth 2 cents.

They will be once the Republicans are done with them.

Penn has always been a cool guy. I remember him literally picking up and carrying survivors during Hurricane Katrina and setting up camps in Haiti after the earthquake. Glad to see he’s still doing good.

Not always.

Katrina he jumped in for a couple of days, because he happened to be nearby, and I think that’s where he got the inspiration to really walk the walk instead of spouting off nonsense. (back in the day, he was a big Hugo Chavez fan). Haiti is where he really got to work; he was there for several years, and ended up earning respect from the generals running the US military response to the crisis. He’s now one of the top-ranked NGO’s doing useful things. He uses his fame (and Hollywood connections) a few days a month for fundraising, but spends most of his time actively organizing and managing the programs.

What are they on about?

Got me. The term “Rose MAGA” is appropriate. I suspect these people, plus Cory Doctorow are mirror-image MAGAS. They got theirs already, so they can advocate for killing everyone else in the country because they are “robots” or “not locally centered” or something.

Really. There’s a kind of person you find on both coasts who is so sentimental about their idea of “natural” living that they want everyone to live like that. The Democrats just happen to be a scapegoat right now.

So the HEROES act does include a provision to remove the SALT limitation that was maliciously imposed on blue states by the GOP tax cut. Now, I personally would benefit from this change and so am all for it — but not as part of this proposal. It should be in separate legislation next year to repeal the 2017 GOP tax cuts when we hopefully have the Senate, House, and Presidency. HEROES should be designed to help who lost their jobs due to the pandemic, and to help states deal with the economic crisis.

It seems that while we’re in the middle of radical right wingers and neo-nazis helping spread a plague that “centrists” is not really the key problem.

Oh, inorite?!

Cory, and his leftist MAGA friends are making their way to the other side of the horseshoe, so anyone in the center will of course be a threat.

Seems to be this one for me (born Sept. 1961)

Date (GMT) Yield (megatons) Deployment Country Test Site Name or Number
October 30, 1961, 50, parachute air drop, Soviet Union, Novaya Zemlya Tsar Bomba, Test #130

My Ovation is Ruby Red like the Fender.
